    Hah!

I’m bringing this comment I made on TPV over here.

All right, I’ve just had a flashback to my youth. I read “The Once and Future King” when I was a freshman in high school. Wonderful work, if you’ve never read it. There’s a point in the novel where Arthur decides that it’s not fair that knights only attack the ill-armed and ill-defended foot soldiers, when war exists solely because knights wage it. So he decides that his knights will start attacking the enemy knights. There is an uproar of the “that’s not the way it’s done” variety.

I see the same dynamic at work here. PBO is upending the political niceties. He’s not playing the DC roulette game. He’s attacking their knights, and attacking for real, seeking to inflict as much punishment as he can. And the GOP has no idea how to respond, because “it’s never been done that way”. As I’ve said in other essays, PBO isn’t playing for short term advantage; he’s pretty much trying to take the GOP off the field as an effective political force, and to neuter the right wing movement that dominates it.

Another quote from “The Once and Future King”:

Mordred and Agravaine thought Arthur hypocritical—as all decent men must be, if you assume that decency can’t exist.

If you want to use the chess metaphor, he gave up a few pieces so that he could ultimately capture the queen. If you want to use the boxing metaphor, he’s let the GOP tire itself out punching like a big lummox and is now moving in for the kill. I just like the metaphor that he’s going to open up a can of whupass on them.

        • 13 jacquelineoboomer
          April 30, 2012 at 9:42 pm

As much as PBO may be capturing the queen, I’ve always wanted to attack (in a peaceful sense, as in: “win over”) some knights. So, I’m good with your perspective. :)

Your boxing metaphor is like the Mohamed Ali picture that you sometimes see in pictures of President Obama’s old office. Same strategy – let them tire themselves out, then just move in elegantly for the final shot. President Obama is amazing to watch. I completely agree with David Letterman who said, “it’s a pleasure to watch you work”. I feel sometimes like I’m on hold just watching history unfold in front of me. I don’t want to miss a minute!

      April 30, 2012 at 10:53 pm

‘And the GOP has no idea how to respond, because “it’s never been done that way” ‘

LL, THIS is exactly how I’ve seen things for the longest while, except that I’ve thought in terms of change – change that they did not, do not, recognize because ‘it;s never been done this way’ and they keep expecting him to revert. IMO, lacking creativity themselves (notice how they keep offering the very same solutions over and over), GOP are totally befuddled when things don’t follow their expected pattern.

In addition, I think they are so unused to truth and have never encountered a politician who says what he means and does what he says that PBO can tell them to their face what he intends to do and they still have no counter BECAUSE THEY CAN’T BELIEVE HE WOULD LAY OUT HIS PLANS FOR THE COUNTRY WITHOUT SUBTERFUGE. They wouldn’t normally do so, except for the one-term president thingy. I like the idea of PBO ‘trying to take the GOP off the field as an effective political force, and to neuter the right wing movement that dominates it.’

        April 30, 2012 at 11:19 pm

I don’t know if you all have noticed, but Willard’s answer to everything is always ‘Do NOTHING’ except when he or his friends can clean up financially!

Auto industry is in trouble? Do nothing! They’ll go bankrupt, and maybe, my buds & I can pick over what’s left.
Foreclosures abound? Do nothing! Let it bottom out, then WE (1%) can buy up the houses, rent them out and clean up financially!
Immigrant issues/problem? Do nothing! They’ll leave in frustration when life becomes unbearable.
bin Laden running amok? Do nothing! Let’s not waste money on HIM. He’ll turn himself in when he gets tired.
High unemployment? Do nothing! Let the job creators take care of it.

        etc. etc.
IMO Willard is one lazy aspiring candidate with not even one sensible, workable idea to strengthen the country! I wouldn’t doubt that this campaign is the most he has ever roused himself to look beyond himself, and he hasn’t really done that.

Achieve, you, JOB, or anyone with email access to the campaign are welcome to send this. In the words of one of our own ‘there is no pride of ownership’. I hesitate to contact them with a specific request because I am not a citizen (so sometimes feel I’m sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong. I’m somewhat sensitive that way), plus I do not have a zip code and was always stymied when asked while contacting certain republican senators earlier in the year. I do however believe what I said is the absolute truth. No matter the words Willard has used to date when specific issues have been raised, he always seems to be willing to either ‘pass the buck’ or wait for the situation to resolve itself – ‘As president, my advisers will….’ “Before making a decision involving Israel, I’d phone my friend Bibi Netanyahu…”. Jobs will be created when the 1%ers get around to letting them ‘trickle down’, etc. etc. The fact though is that some issues facing the president, or any leader for that matter, require action in order to avert a greater disaster. There is no way Willard can be good for America and, by extension, the world!

Rachel Maddow – can sometimes be downright freaking irritating and often has a huge blind spot – is ripping GOP strategist, CNN pundit, and former Romney adviser Alex Castellanos a new one about his insulting, scumbag, jerk like, douchebag behavior towards her and all women on Sunday’s MTP. He said women don’t earn less than men and then when Rachel corrected him, he dragged Pres. Obama, and all women into the conversation saying we were all making it up to fit some weird narrative and play the victim. He was an outright bastard. And for once I am glad Rachel came out swinging for Pres. Obama and women.

She did a great job…yesterday AND just now. The one thing that I said to her as I walked by the TV to this computer though….is that Republicans don’t like FACTS! Thus, the women’s pay difference issue and the condesending , shitty attitude answer from Alex yesterday…facts NEVER MATTER WITH THEM. That’s why they NEVER FIX ANYTHING…in their minds, it’s all working great for THEM! NO PROBLEM THERE!

    Evening TOD
    Love the cartoon Chipsticks lol.

President Obama is so awesome and completely unpredictable…100 steps ahead. The Republicans are just jealous they don’t have him as their leader…I know I am jealous you of guys as a Canadian daily LoL.

The Republicans have the MSM on their side, Millions of dollars…putting negative stories out there daily , the divisive Huffpo(fox in the hen house), and still the President remains popular…it must drive them crazy lol.

4.1 million people who are working today, know who to thank… and whether it is 10,000 or 175,000 who got jobs this month they know who thank as well.
Those who now have health care know who to thank, the families who finally got justice because
Osama is dead know who to thank, those police officers, fire fighters, first responders during 9/11 I am sure
remember who fought for them to get proper heatlh care…the Republicans have IMO a huge up hill battle, they are up against every day reality of peoples lifes vs. what they are saying.

Arianna should have choked on the word despicable when it came out of her mouth.

President Obama believes in the greatness of the American people, and MSM, pundits and the Republicans are banking on the smallness of the American people. President Obama has regain America’s leadership in world because he displays what is great about America…so 4 more years; please America. Thank you

ROMNEY’S WISECRACK ABOUT PRES CARTER REVEALS MORE ABOUT HIM THAN PRES CARTER

I was really shocked and dismayed at the flippant comment Mitt Romney made about President Jimmy Carter. It was very disrespectful and totally unnecessary. Disrespecting Democratic presidents is common practice for the GOP. I see that two members of the media, Chris Matthews and James Fallows are not pleased with Romney’s wisecrack. I really think he owes President Carter an apology.

Romney, Obama and the bin Laden raid

    ——————————————-

There were grave dangers in undertaking it. Navy Seals could have been trapped and killed. Their helicopters could have been shot down before or after they arrived. They could have wound up in close combat with Pakistani forces. Bin Laden could have escaped.

It took great nerve to go ahead. Had the raid failed, Obama had to know he would be reviled as incompetent and foolhardy. His presidency would have taken a devastating blow. But he signed off on it, resolved to accept the consequences, just as he had pledged in the campaign.

Robert Gates, who was not only Obama’s defense secretary but George W. Bush’s, has said, “I worked for a lot of these guys and this is one of the most courageous calls — decisions — that I think I’ve ever seen a president make.” Dismissing it has to be one of the most revealing that Romney has made.

I didn’t see Adm. Mullen, so I can only guess that he was looking out for our military’s interests in theater. When he was CJCS, he offered up huge support and respect – seemed to be both personal and professional – for President Obama, and I can’t see his changing that this close to his own retirement from the Navy. I used to “follow” him when he was Chief of Naval Operations, and I was still working for the Navy, and he seemed to respect his Sailors as much as he did President Obama. (You can see, in some ways, I’m still “working” for the Navy – guilty.)

America should be recognizing the courageous action taken by the President and military personnel (plus the dog) who finally closed a decade long tragic chapter in America’s history. It’s pretty sad that the GOP can’t honor their country in any way, if it means conceding something to President Obama. The people killed in 9/11 weren’t just Democrats or Republicans – or even just Americans. It’s pretty sad.

At 8:40 p.m. Eastern, Obama will meet at Tucson International Airport with a group of students who volunteer at an urban farm. Then, at 9:10 p.m. Eastern, she will deliver remarks at a campaign event in Tucson.
The visit comes as part of a four-state swing for the first lady ahead of Saturday’s official Obama campaign kick-off events in Ohio and Virginia. In recent weeks, both the president and first lady have held a steady stream of political events, but the Obama campaign contends that Saturday will mark the formal beginning of the general election .
Earlier Monday, Michelle Obama made two appearances in Colorado Springs, Colo., at a closed-door meeting with campaign volunteers and at the opening ceremony for the 2012 Warrior Games, a competition for injured service members.
On Tuesday, the first lady heads to Las Vegas, Nev., where she delivers remarks at a morning fundraiser and later meets with campaign volunteers and supporters.
She wraps up the trip with a pair of events in Albuquerque, N.M. She will meet with service members at Albuquerque International Airport and will later headline a fundraiser.

Bush jr’s first ad used images from 9/11………………………
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

President George Bush’s re-election campaign ran into trouble today after he was accused of delivering a “slap in the face” to the victims of the September 11 attacks by using images of the atrocity in television adverts.

A £5.5m advertising campaign, which began today in 17 key election states, marked the opening round of Mr Bush’s counter-attack against his Democratic challenger Senator John Kerry.

One of the 30-second commercials includes a brief clip of a body, wrapped in the American flag, being lifted from the wreckage of New York’s World Trade Centre. Firefighters, who emerged as heroes of the rescue effort, also feature in the adverts.

But the campaign appeared to have backfired badly today as relatives of those killed on September 11 accused the president of exploiting the tragedy to boost his political career.

“It’s a slap in the face of the murders of 3,000 people. It is unconscionable,” said Monica Gabrielle, whose husband died in the attacks on the twin towers.

Tom Roger, whose daughter was a flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11, said: “I would be less offended if he showed a picture of himself in front of the Statue of Liberty. But to show the horror of 9/11 in the background, that’s just some advertising agency’s attempt to grab people by the throat,” he told the New York Daily News.

Firefighter Tommy Fee called the adverts “sick”, adding: “The image of firefighters at Ground Zero should not be used for this stuff, for politics.”

The intended message of the adverts is “steady leadership in times of change”. To stirring music, Mr Bush tells viewers: “I know exactly what we need to do to make the world more free and peaceful.”

Republican campaigners defended the commercials, saying that the September 11 was a “defining” moment in America’s history.

Campaign manager Ken Mehlman said: “Because of that day, America is at war and still is.”

Karen Hughes, a Bush campaign adviser, told CBS television’s The Early Show: “Obviously, all of us mourn and grieve for the victims of that terrible day, but September 11 fundamentally changed our public policy in many important ways, and I think it’s vital that the next president recognise that.”

President Obama has unleashed a particularly unusual fundraiser for his 2012 campaign.

One Internet a d starts with a two-toned blue background, like dozens of other pro-Obama spots. Then the furry star pops into the frame, tongue out and ready to frolic. “Join Pet Lovers for Obama,” the ad implores.

The unlikely pitchman is Bo, the White House family pet, who may well be the first “first dog” to emerge as a central player in a presidential reelection campaign.

Political pets have long attracted inordinate attention, from then-Sen. Richard M. Nixon’s dog, Checkers — the focus of an early 1950s scandal that slowed his political ascent — to Bill Clinton’s adopted stray cat, Socks. In 2004, George W. Bush’s campaign put together a tongue-in-cheek video for the Republican National Convention seeking advice from Barney, Bush’s Scottish terrier, on how to attract the “canine vote.”

But Obama appears to be breaking ground by featuring his Portuguese water dog so prominently in official campaign advertisements and fundraising efforts, part of a broader focus on the president’s family.

Might appear OT, but it really isn’t.

I have enormous respect for The Central Asia Institute and its Founder Greg Mortenson. Greg and the Institute were victims of a 60 Minutes hatchet job and were pursued in court with a wreckless suit.

    Today the suit was dismissed!!!

April 30, 2012 – Lawsuit Dismissed, Mission Continues

Central Asia Institute is extremely pleased with the U.S. District Court ruling Monday dismissing the lawsuit against it, cofounder Greg Mortenson, writer David Oliver Relin and Penguin Group publishing.

In dismissing the suit U.S. District Court Judge Sam E. Haddon concluded:

“The case has been pending for almost a year. The Complaint before the Court is the fifth pleading filed. Plaintiffs have been accorded every opportunity to adequately plead a case, if one exists. Moreover, the imprecise, in part flimsy, and speculative nature of the claims and theories advanced underscore the necessary conclusion that further amendment would be futile. This case will be dismissed with prejudice.”

CAI is invigorated by the news. Greg is on his way overseas. Our dual mission continues unabated.
Yet, today’s good news should not take away from the tremendous amount of work still to be done. Millions of children in the world remain out of school due to war, religious extremism, discrimination, and poverty.

CAI has worked with communities in remote, mountainous, and often war-wracked regions for more than 15 years to build, supply, staff, and maintain over 180 schools and 30 vocational centers, and support an additional 56 schools, 20 literacy centers, eight scholarship programs, and 22 public health (potable water, midwifery, and disaster-relief) projects. No other NGO does what we do in these locales with such a small team of dedicated individuals.

Greg stands by the stories in his books.

As always, CAI staff is available to answer any questions or concerns. info@ikat.org

    Why Obama Owns bin Laden

    http://ideas.time.com/2012/04/30/why-obama-owns-bin-laden/?iid=op-main-lede%3Fxid%3Drss-topstories

He learned it early. Barack Obama is many things; among them, he is a tough and even ferocious political warrior…..

….Republicans are — forgive the cliché — shocked, shocked to discover that a presidential contender is “politicizing” an important national event. In this sense, “politicizing” might be best translated as “beating us up and we don’t have anything much to say to stop it.” The ad itself raises intriguing, substantive, legitimate questions — and the ferocious, sputtering Republican reaction is proof positive that they know it, or at least suspect it….

….The way to put oneself in a position to take the harder, more honorable political path is to argue for one’s virtues in a vigorous way. That’s what Obama has done, and is doing. There’ll be more punches coming.

  44. April 30, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Are Jon Stewart and Arianna dating? They should be—–perfect soulmates—–the most fake of the fake “liberals” ——–seize any opportunity or tiny opening in order to criticize President Obama. Inside the Mitt Smackdown

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/04/inside_the_mitt_laden_smackdown_1.php

….Let’s start with the premise that absolutely any sitting President who made a high stakes choice to order a commando raid that killed one of the most notorious enemies of the United States in American history would make that decision a center point in his or her campaign for a second term. To pretend otherwise is not only ludicrous; this is actually what a president should do. So much of what goes into a presidential campaign are indiciators – some bogus, others acute – about what a president would do in impossible to foresee, high stakes moments. Obama made a high stakes call. He was proved right. And he’ll bring that before the electorate to make his argument to keep him as president…..

,,,,People don’t expect Democrats to make such brash moves on national security politics. It’s been a very long time since a Democratic president has been in a position to do it. Its aforementioned obviousness aside, it’s garnered a collective gasp from the pundit class. It was a smack right across the face of Mitt Romney right as he’s making a reasonably successful reintroduction of himself to the American people…..

Even in situations that I wonder about I feel that if I could talk to him and understand the information he had to make the decision, I would probably agree with him. I just plain trust him. THE president who won the Nobel Peace Prize less than nine months after his inauguration has turned out to be one of the most militarily aggressive American leaders in decades….

….Ironically, the president used the Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech as an occasion to articulate his philosophy of war. He made it very clear that his opposition to the Iraq war didn’t mean that he embraced pacifism — not at all….

“I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people,” the president told the Nobel committee — and the world. “For make no mistake: Evil does exist in the world. A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler’s armies. Negotiations cannot convince Al Qaeda’s leaders to lay down their arms. To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism — it is a recognition of history, the imperfections of man, and the limits of reason.”….

First lady Michelle Obama paid tribute to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in a campaign stop in Tucson, Ariz., Monday, while drumming up support for her husband’s reelection bid.

Obama gave a speech at the Tucson Convention Center, according to a pool report, saying it was an honor to be in the city again since visiting in the aftermath of the January 2011 shooting at a “Congress on Your Corner” event that killed six and wounded Giffords.

“I can’t tell you how special this place is to us,” she said.

Giffords’ mother, Gloria Giffords, was in attendance. While recognizing her, Obama said she and President Barack Obama are inspired by the former congresswoman’s courage and determination in her recovery from a brain injury caused by a gunshot to the head.

“We love her and are with her, with you, with the family every step of the way,” Obama said.

She also mentioned Ron Barber, Giffords’ former district director who’s running for her seat, saying he will do a “fantastic job” representing congressional District 8 in Washington, according to the pool report.

In her speech, the first lady expressed confidence in her husband’s chances at winning the traditionally red state of Arizona in November.

“I know we are going to do it here because of people like you,” Obama told the crowd.

The Tucson stop is part of a Western campaign swing by the first lady, who continues on to Las Vegas and Albuquerque Tuesday.

Marlz these pictures that you have posted from yesterdays event in NH for Romney are hilarious. I bet the media outnumbered the actual “supporters”

Yeah, the enthusiasm is overwhelming. I’ll bet the stories said thousands breathlessly await the great Mittster. Wouldn’t put it past media to photoshop these events to make the crowds bigger.

So Willard and Ms. Ann ran to CBS This Morning to get softball interview from Charlie Rose. The MSM thinks they’re helping Romney by not asking him the hard questions, but the American people will not give him a pass on this. When Willard starts to stammer and stutter during the debates because he’s not used to answering hard questions and only knows how to lie, President Obama will eviscerate him and humiliate him in front of the WORLD!

Just saw Mitt and Ann Romney on CBS This Morning, Yes he’s still stiff, unlikeable and uncomfortable in front to the camera and, yes he was still whining about the Obama ad, and no Charlie Rose didn’t ask him to explain his comments about Bin Laden.

I thought that cool ad put out by Romney supporters were saying that cool and likeablity didn’t matter. If it don’t then why is Ann and Mitt running around trying to convince people Mitt is a likeable exciting guy.
