Oh, that’s going to hurt.
And we laugh.
I posted this late in the other thread so I’m posting it here.
So I read the article in Atlantic Wire, “The Swiftboating of Obama Has Begun”
I don’t know if it’s gonna work this time though.
1) Bin Laden is dead. Obama gave the order. The SEALS followed the order.
2) whether or not you think the admin as been “politicizing” the killing. I dont’ recall Obama saying “I got Bin Laden” he always makes it a point to say he “authorized” a mission for the SEALS to take him out.
3)anyone who remembers know what happened to Kerry in 2004, hell it’s why we call this type of ad “swiftboating”. The ad worked (or not or whatever) because first it was the first of it’s kind to get mainstream airplay and Kerry ’04 was way different than Obama ’12. People have an idea what one means when we say a politician has been “swiftboated”. It’s only gonna rile up Obama supporters and after Kerry, it will prob disgust independents, IMHO. This ads does nothing but give anti-Obama people another viral video to watch and rant off too.
Anyone else think this ad will amount to a hill of beans outside the beltway?
Reposting my response to you.
Short answer: No. Sen. Kerry was unknown outside the Beltway. And, as I make clear in my latest post on TPV, PBO isn’t playing by the same rules. He’s not playing the game on the GOP’s terms. In other words, Kerry reacted like the typical Dem of the past 40 years; PBO is not.
That’s why the RWNJ’s heads are exploding. That’s why they’re saying he isn’t running a clean campaign. Romney, who has never met any real opposition his entire life is shocked — just shocked I tell you — that he can banter absurd assertions about the President and then feign outrage that the President is taking the offensive.
We need to see this. The base needs to see this. Swing voters need to see this. They need to see this President get in front on his record, get in front on exposing Romney’s record, get in front on framing Republicans. We need an election where we see our Democratic President not just defend from the attacks but take the offensive. The Obama way, of course, but take the offensive nonetheless.
Absolutely spot on…
LL, you TPV post was great. I hope that after the election is over, you put together a book of these essays, framed by some thoughtful comments about what the election showed us. You can sign me up as a book buyer. This may be the first time that reverse swiftboating comes into play. This week showed us how the president can take an attack, turn it around and make his opponent look weak. If he keeps this switch play up, they will regret the day they tried to use the old techniques against him. One of my fantasies is to see Karl Rove in tears.
Ditto on that jackieg. But I’d go one better and love to see charges brought up on Rove and Cheney for all the nasty stuff they’ve done. C’mon Holder. You must have some stuff on them by now.
THIS. And I’d buy that book, after the deed is done.
I agree that LL should put together a book of his essays. In addition I would love for Chipsticks and Blackwaterdog to do a book on their blogs and what they personally learned from it, some of their pictures, etc., I would definately buy their books too.
No caca, Sherlock!
The real opening salvo was when PBO “went there” at the WHCD. Albeit joking, he beat them all with every piece of ridiculous BS they tried on. Then he stood tough & took rightful credit for deciding to end OBL. Then, while the Mittster is posturing with pizza in NYC, our PRESIDENT is in AFGHANISTAN telling it!
Mitty is TOAST with whipped cream, your choice of other toppings & a big fat cherry on top. Although, I would advise taking a pass on this dessert!
He didn’t get swift boated in the last election. He won’t this time either.
and there you have it.
And, I’ll repost this I found on TOD.. “Why Obama Can’t Be Swift-Boated
I think there’s lots more compelling reasons too..mainly because he’s PObama and all that entails. Bless his righteous, energetic heart!

A new Marquette Law survey confirms the conventional wisdom on Wisconsin: that Tom Barrett is likely to be the Democratic nominee and the general election will be close with a capital “C.” The data:
With less than a week until the primary in the historic Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election, a new Marquette Law School Poll shows Tom Barrett leading Kathleen Falk 38 percent to 21 percent, with 8 percent for Doug La Follette and 6 percent for Kathleen Vinehout. In a June general election between Barrett and Governor Scott Walker, Barrett leads by one percentage point, 47-46, among all registered voters, while Walker leads by one percentage point, 48-47, among likely voters. Both results are well within the margin of error of the poll. Walker leads former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk 49 percent to 42 percent among registered voters and 49 percent to 43 percent among likely voters.
The hope among Republicans is that Barrett is less defined than Walker and a tsunami of negative ads will make him unacceptable to the general electorate. Democrats hope that as the sitting governor and an intensely covered figure, Walker’s 46-48 percent is a hard ceiling.
And labor, meanwhile, appears to have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in a Democratic primary for a second-place candidate.
The survey shows the race for the White House is less competitive in the state: President Obama leads Mitt Romney there by 9 percentage points, a slight improvement for the president since the last round of Marquette data.
ACTION ALERT: TIME TO FIGHT
GO HERE: And help us set the record straight about President Obama and “losing the youth” propaganda. Just a quick post in the comments will do.
Auni posted this yesterday, but I’m not sure anyone saw it.
I don’t tweet, Tally, but this is the new meme this week. Heard it on Monday on local news radio, today on NPR. This with all of our eyes “lying” to us/ snark!! OT, I like to listen to Rev Al on radio, and near all of his callers give PBO high marks on his leadership and such. One in particular, an ex-Vietnam vet, says we should all send PBO a thank you card on how he handled the signing of the agreement with Karzai, and the OBL issue. He also said that PBO goes home each night to 4 women, and if he can do that he can do anything….LOL !
Tally well of course that’s what the GOP want us to believe, but they Are fucking dreaming and the know it.
PBO was able to do masterful what he does better, Last Saturday at the WHCD was excellent every body
jusy love POTUS, and what happened next BOOM He surprised the MSM by going to Afghanistan just brilliant.
Last year at the WHCD did the same thing He was excellent very funny and humilieted The Donald and Next
day BOOOM again he announced the KILLING of OBL and the whole celebrated and were very happy except
The GOP and some of the PL. So now he made the MSM so pissed because he did not told the he was planing
to Go to Afghanistan just brilliant just brillian. The GOP are Fucked big time.
I wish we had “like” buttons. This comment is so spot on!
I did Tally. I can’t twitter but I can do facebook so I do that.
Went and commented on the cartoon. What dumb a.. people. Let them think that. Let them be lulled into thinking Robme has it made. The night of 11/6 will be their reward.
Psst, is bigamy an offence in america ?
Only in Antarctica!
I am not a frigging penguin, jovie. Despite the views to the contrary.
Is this a serious question?
Yes it is. If you are found out you can go to prison. Except for the ones in Utah and a few other states.
I think with those the first wives are the legal wives. The others are just concubines. Holy concubines that the men marry in temple. And guess what? Those concubines can get Aid to Dependenet Children, Food Stamps, WIC for Women Infant and Children to buy milk and cereal and juice for the kids because legally they are not married. Nice huh? God bless America.
Exactly but ask Warren Jeffs how well that all worked out for him when the AG’s and Feds got the goods on how state & federal money that was supposed to be used for schools & other needs was lining the pockets of those good Patriarchs who were abusing children mostly girls but some boys too & expelling all the adolescent boys from their towns so they could keep the girls for themselves.
I read the book written by one of the Jeff boys. Terrible things were happening to the young people, girls and boys.
I wish they’d just make it illegal to have more than one wife and that people would read and understand what is happening in this so called church. I hope reporters will dig into the sect so people can make informed decision regarding the election.
There is one down the block from me I wonder if I put on my NBA mother beaded dress and hat and show up for services I’d be allowed in?
Romney will not be appearing on Saturday Night Live this season, Lorne Michaels says.
I would think not after dissing PBO about Fallon. I think the days are gone when SNL was seen as a relevant platform but PBO was absolutely right to do it back in the day.
New #NorthCarolina #Poll Survey USA — #Obama Leads #Romney by 15 Points With Cell Phone Users, 4% Overall with all Reg. Voters #p2— Claude Gauvin (@JeffersonObama) May 02, 2012
I read the vanity fair article about PBO’s past life & I was left in owe of the man that is Barack Obama. I love him more everyday.
I read some of it, I couldnt tell if it was an article or a romance novel.
That’s a good ad…..short, to the point, direct! Easily cut up into small bites.
“Call out their bs.”
Okay, can someone tell me what “swiftboating” is exactly? I was in 7th grade for the 2004 election. So needless to say, I could careless about politics at the time.
John Kerry served in Vietnam on a swiftboat, which patrolled the Mekong and other rivers there. He made his service a feature of his campaign. An outside group put out ads questioning the story he told about his service, and he never effectively fought back to defend himself. Thus, “swiftboating”.
another reason the kerry “swiftboat” stuff is not comparable is that republicans were lying about something that happened decades before with no film or photographic evidence to combat their lies. now they’re trying to rlie about something that happened one year ago in the new internet era that everyone lived through and still remembers for the most part. man, republicans are not very smart. they can’t adjust to changing times at all, hence why they are “conservatives” i guess.
I see. I don’t see how that has anything to do with PBO. He directly ordered the bin Laden raid and there has never been a “slam dunk” by him for it.
Which is exactly our point. It won’t work. The GOP is playing by old gameplans, thinking that, surely, PBO is just a normal Dem who will wilt under their assault. Their hatred blinds them.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. A.Einstein, I do believe. The GOP do not learn from the past, thus are destined to repeat it. They will fail again and again and again.
Insanity is what the GOP does best and the MSM follows them like tweeter down the insanity trail.
Let’s recall MLK here: “No one will ride your back unless it is bent !
Yes and to this day, there are a ton of people who believed their lies. Kerry taught everyone a good lesson about fighting back on scurrilous lies.
and it is the main ploy of Rovian politics—-turn a candidate’s strength into his weakness. (see the attempt to make Obama’s cool factor and likability a liability)
a major fail….that video looked to positive to me that even “The Donald” called it a fail.
@MittRomney In VA: "I'll do the opposite of what Obama has done for the economy" Which means he'll take us back into the Great Recession?— (@utaustinliberal) May 02, 2012
Good Grief…..Newt is giving a campaign speech while dropping out.
What did he say? I can’t listen to the man. Just tell me in a short sentence what he said. That’s all I need.
He said that he is great, all conservative ideas originated with him, Calista harped on him about his fatal mistake of talking about ruling the moon colony, Barack Obama is the most extreme leftist of all time so in that case he’ll vote for Romney, that he and helmet hair will continue to be “good citizens” until the whole country is under Repub and corporate control and will continue to be regular zoo patrons. (only the zoo part was made up) So long forever Mankini Newtie.
Thanks for breaking it down for me.
It sure doesn’t make sense though especially the part about moon colony. I was looking forward to visit that moon colony on vacation.
Good citizens huh? That’s nice to know but I also know that they will continue to charge jewelry at Tiffany and go on cruises with their best friends Babs and Arrriana to the Greek Islands.
He looked sad, poor Newt. He can try again in 2016, 2020,2024. If at once you don’t succeed, try, try try again.
Or in his case, if at first you fail – fail, fail again!
I wonder what number wife Newtie will be on in 2016…I bet Calista will look for a younger, richer, man.
Nobody wabts that relic. They belong together. Doughboy and Miss Havisham from Great Expectations. Wasting millions running for President over and over again when people are suffering.
UT, which translates into I haven’t the faintest idea what I’ll do because I don’t understand how PBO managed to bring back the economy. When you think about it, this qualifies as one of the stupidest statements he could make. It makes him sound like an idiot with no ideas of his own. It’s just, I’ll have the opposite of whatever he’s having and hope that shows how brave I am. What a horse’s ass
I love this comment! That was my reaction as well. Robme becomes more clueless every day. I will soon expect him to say:
“Forget all that stuff. Just vote for me because I am a rich white man & I deserve it”
What else does he have?
Jeepers! Junior Seau formerly of the Chargers, shot and killed in his House.
Oh Man! Preliminary reports say he may have killed himself.
Lord have mercy!
ooooookay. stephanie’s got it goin on! it’s a whole new era in campaigning boys and girls, and the republicans past tricks are becoming less and less effective. what a great video (in a whole bunch of ways)! i like this whole “truth squad” thing.
Grassley says, that he is Warning the President to Not declare the war on terror over.
Who the hell does he think he is?
A bitter old prune.
Hey.I love prunes. Let’s settle on scumbag. So easy to remember and agree on.
I do too! Slow cooked Moroccan-style with chicken (rabbit is better), or in Cock-a-Leekie soup! OMNOM!
Simply, a white man.
Grassley, quit being so severely STUPID.
Like we didn’t know this…
Poll: President Obama is world's most respected leader: … aol.it/xfcmN2 via @AOL— Steve Weinstein (@steveweinstein) May 02, 2012
It is puzzling that the author of the article had to preface the article with this line: “President Barack Obama is still the world’s most respected leader…” Why qualify with “still?” Were they expecting someone different? Mitt Romney? Glen Greenwald? Miss Ann?
He is STILL the US President and leader of the free world so why would we expect things to be different?
I take it as, “Still, in spite of the scorched Earth policies and bitter hatred of the insane right wing nutters….”
I hope that’s what the author was really trying to say!
That is so true. You can see it and feel it … in the pictures from his visits abroad (anywhere) and from what and how the news agencies in foreign countries cover him. If we don’t reelect this wonderful man as President, the repercussions will be felt across the world. Socially and economically.
Damn…Stef Cutter went there. “We’re gonna call their BS out” Okay. I love it!

I LIKE that poll of most respected world leaders! President Obama, the Dalai Lama, and TWO WOMEN: Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel! Wow! Didn’t think I’d ever see the day.
JUST HOW LONG IS IT GOING TO TAKE THE NEWSTER TO CALL IT QUITS…LOTS OF HOT AIR EMITTING FROMMY FLATSCREEN! YIKES!
Regarding Richard Grenell, the openly gay spokesman recently hired to sharpen the foreign policy message of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, has resigned in the wake of a full-court press by anti-gay conservatives.
A great comment left at Sully’s site:
“And his reward for such loyalty, sincerity and pugnacity? Vilification.
I mean: what do Republicans call a gay man with neoconservative passion, a committed relationship and personal courage?
WOW…Mitt, what are your convictions?. What and who will you stand up for? Mitt..who’s your daddy?
Of course I am so shocked that Romney wouldn’t stand up for this man. Just shocked that Romney wouldn’t stand up against the bigots that make up his party. Sure, he’s going to be a ‘moderate’. Yeah, right.
But have you heard the vitriol from this guy concerning PBO’s foreign policy? I’m having trouble defending this guy. Expect this guy to be everywhere, getting every opportunity to spout his Cheneyesque foreign policy, getting a pass because the meanies on the right didn’t like that he was gay.
Remember during the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and DOMA drama of 2010 and the empogs and flaky Dems wanted to say that the GOP was ready to accept Gays and that President and the Democrats were behind the times, The Bush twins, the Cheneys, and other GOP’rs who came forward that the GOP was ready to end the war on Gays? I knew that once the presidential election got on the way you would hear crickets from the GOP. Where are the Bush girls, McCain’s daughter, and other GOP’er NOW?
Because there are two Republican parties. The money and power people and the God ‘n guns people. They are like a fox and a cat tied up together in a sack. Fighting, hissing, spitting and snarling. The only thing that unites them is their hatred of Democrats. The Bush/Cheneys can’t speak for the religious conservatives. They are coming from a completely different place. Thing is the money Repubs invited them in, knowing they could be used. And now they are stuck with them. My dearest wish is to see the party fracture and fall apart.
I thought that too. In fact one quote about him being ready to get out there a destroy PBO because of his weak and ineffective foreign policies (something like that) had me laughing. Really? Part of my brain, the evil part, says he should not have been driven out because of sexual orientation, that’s despicable; he should have been driven out by the laughter when he tried to sell the idea that PBO weak ANYWHERE on foreign policy. They haven’t accepted the fact yet that he’s cut that whole ‘soft on defense’ ground right out from under them.

Election not going to be that close- sez Greg Sargent at WaPo, touting analysis which says historically when Presidential term starts in a down time economically and goes up, then President is more popular than if inverse were true, i.e. FDR, Reagan.
ya know…… As much as it makes me crazy to think that people are THAT FUCKING STUPID…… I’m glad, because the last thing we need is for people to think the POTUS has it so in the bag, that they all stay home, and we end up with Reagan again. Fuck. That.
I am not taking anything for granted because unlike during FDR and Reagan, the GOP was not as desperate as they are now and are willing to steal elections at the ballot box now that they have the SCOTUS on their side. Just like last time as Randi Rhoades says, it can not be a close election, we need to have huge margins like 9 and 10 especially in the swing states. We need a massive turnout all across the country.
We gotta GOTV like it was 2008. Team Obama is on the job and doing the math and we gotta do our part too. I don’t care if he already has 271 electorial votes, I want a landslide plus we gotta get the House AND Senate back.
YES x INFINITY!!!
Geesh… I feel like I just watch Newt’s secret life as Walter Mitty…

People, there is a HUGE difference between the Swift Boaters and the OBL shamers:
The Swift Boat attacks casted doubt on John Kerry’s central qualification to be president – that he acted heroically and selflessly in defense of his country.
The OBL Shamers, on the other hand, are casting doubt on Obama’s … campaign etiquette. They are not disputing that Obama actually did the deed; they are just questioning whether it’s mean and unfair for him to mention that during a campaign.
Plus, how are you going to swiftboat a known entity? Errybody and dey mama knows Barack Obama! <——Hey that rhymes, woot!
Alls fair in Love, War, and Political Campaigns. The GOP doesn’t know anything about campaign etiquette….they are the party of dirty tricks.
Hilarious article on Bloomberg by Margaret Carlson on any attempt (which has begun) to swiftboat PBO:
Kerry may have been Swift-Boated, but Obama is not going to be SEALed. Republicans are used to calling Democrats cowards and worse. Not this time. Republicans have the squishy, soft, cosseted, consensus-building candidate, while Democrats have the fighter. Finally.”

I e-mailed them the link and said
KARMA indeed. I earlier saw Jack Cafferty spewing a whole lot of nonsense about our President. Meanwhile, our President is the most respected leader in the WORLD, while Cafferty is a nobody stewing in his own bile at Tea-NN.
I will drink to that oh I nerver watch garbage anyway!!!!
This is awesome.

Good. I am not at all surprised. Who are those 2 ladies who precede Soledad? I miss TJ Holmes. Soledad’s show is somewhat disappointing. I expected a little more from her. She has really lousy pundits.
CNN went too far right—-with their hiring and programming—-trying to compete with FOX. They are no longer respected as they were when they tried to maintain an objective middle reputation.
I did not give TeaNN one hit for over three years now. Not even one and that was my favorite station. MSNBC gets one hit a day from me when Rev Al comes on then I’m gone.
They have no one to blame but themselves. People are going to put w/ their shenanigans. That tea party debate was the final straw!
Fascist F****** at cnn are burying themselves with their craven mediawhoremongering.
President Obama has high poll numbers, he is more popular then Mitt, GWB and the Republican Party…yet instead of captializing on his popularity the MSM is attacking him…
ummm, with what? The expectation that viewers will tune in, day in day out, to see what their latest attack will be?…
Lol, whose business plan are these idiots following? Mitt?…Lol, Paul Ryan?.
p.s Rev Al ratings numbers are better then Morning Joe, Anderson 360…actually better then
all of CNN programme line up.
Exactly! If they would just accept that most people like and respect the President they could be bringing us positive coverage that would unite and uplift the country, instead of all this anger and shit stirring.

He cracks me up.

Comment on Stef Cutter’s video: Is this the first time that a major political operative has used the term “BS” in an official campaign document? Stellar!
BWHAHAHAHA! This was too funny. Has anyone seen the vid of Shep Smith of FoxNews after reading R-Money’s statment after Newt dropped out. If not AngryBlackLady posted it over at BJ.
I LOL’d so much after watching it.
Why, why, why is Shep Smith still at Pox? MSNBC should clear out Dylan Ratfucker and bring Shep in.
His commentary on this was PRICELESS and he did it with a straight face which made it even more hilarious. Fox must be paying him a pretty penny for him to have not been snatched up by MSNBC by now.
ack. i just left a comment below about this. please don’t fall for smith’s game. he is one of the only original fox news people still there. all these years he’s been peddling the crazy. it’s part of the whole schtick to appear as the supposedly normal one from time to time. it’s fake.

The whole Bush era is like some massive trauma we've collectively suppressed. The minute it ended we stopped talking/thinking about it.— David Roberts (@drgrist) May 02, 2012
Isn’t that the truth? W just disappeared and so did all reference to him, so traumatized were we and so relieved to be rid of that embarrassing nightmare.
Do you remember the weeks immediately after the election in 2008 ? The economy was going down the drain, Bush was AOL and everybody, in panic mode, was looking at Barack Obama for leadership. He was doing the best he could, making appearances, presenting his economic team, talking about the stimulus that was in the works , etc. And he said it afterwards, the most difficult thing for him was that he already felt responsible for the country, knew what he wanted to do but didn’t have the power yet.
I’ll never forget the weeks after the election. In the minds of americans, Barack Obama had to become President BEFORE his inauguration. In America and in the whole world, we couldn’t WAIT for Bush to get the hell out of D.C. So not only Barack Obama inherited a mess of epic proportions, he didn’t even have the luxury to relax a little after months and months of hard campaigning.
What has been asked of this man FROM THE VERY FIRST DAY is insane.
“I’ll never forget the weeks after the election. In the minds of americans, Barack Obama had to become President BEFORE his inauguration”.
That was so true Lovepolitics2008. You are so right. Everyone was looking to BO for leadership before his inauguration.
PBO is the only President in my lifetime (maybe before) who never had a “honeymoon” period.
Oh I remember that. I was like, “WTF? Where Is Bush?!” I recall the saying the same thing during the Georgian War. Every site I was reading at the time was demanding that then CANDIDATE Sen. Barack Obama DO something. Really? Where was Bush?
I still remember the description of election night in Washitngton, DC, by a major news outlet in the US (paraphrased): “The celebrations in the streets [ with a photograph of the crowds close to the White House ] is akin to a people who have defeated a dictator.”
Remember Bush’s statement: “If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier… just so long as I’m the dictator.”
Apparently Romney wasn’t just a Bishop, but is/was an ARCHBISHOP, who takes his orders from The Prophet (who is the equivilant to the Catholic Pope). http://www.accuracy.org/release/mormonism-bigotry-president-romneys-bishophood-a-threat-to-the-first-amendment/ Why are we just letting this slide? We would never, ever elect a Catholic Archbishop as President. Why are we even entertaining the idea of electing a Mormon Archbishop to the office? Why is this going unchallenged?
It’s rumbling below the surface—–mostly in the Repub Party with the evangelicals. Dems won’t want to bring religion into the mix. Only Repubs are allowed to question religious belief as they have continuously and dishonestly done with President Obama. I wondered if it would come up if Rubio is the VP candidate because he and family were Mormon during his youth in Nevada.
Didn’t Bain Capital clean house of all it’s non-Mormon employees? How likely is Mitt to have an all-Mormon cabinet? He’s so secretive and remote–the very opposite of our President. What’s to stop him from creating a theocracy?
Hey TOD. This is hilarious.

Thought of the day, from xkcd:
The only things you HAVE to know are how to make enough of a living to stay alive and how to get your taxes done. All the fun parts of life are optional.
Wow, Tweety might be on a roll today. In the first segment, he totally put MC Steele on the spot by asking what foreign policy writing, ideas, speeches, etc has he read by Mitt Romney that made him sit up and notice that Romney had anything substantial to say about Foreign Policy…MC Steele said nothing for a few seconds
then on his 2nd segment he had the leader of the Log Cabin Republicans on and from the start, he would not let the LCR guy use his cop-out of trying to defend the Romney campaign while trying to show outrage over Grenell’s firing. Seems to me like the LCR dude was more worried about trying not to burn his bridges with the Romney campaign than trying to “defend his friends” honor.
Tweety did good, but it won’t last.
I especially like the part about showing the hypocrisy of log cabiners. Those guys are masochists! F*** ‘em if they can’t take reality.

Serious question: in terms of politics, has Paul Krugman been right about ANYTHING?
He says the Republicans are bad for the economy and that Pres. Obama will be re-elected. Works for me.
(double dip) No (/double dip)
I think he is a pretty smart economist but should stick to that. If I remember correctly, he was one of the few that understood the depth of the recession when PBO took office, pushed for a much larger stimulus and decried the fact that so much of it was in tax cuts. In retrospect, I think he was correct on all of these points from an ECONOMIC perspective. I don’t believe that PBO could have gotten much of any of that through the Conrgress, what he got was the best he could do. Unfortunately, the economy in fact was in much worse shape than any realized, a larger stimulus would have helped with a much stronger recovery and the tax cuts were basically worthless in that they don’t add much in the very near future. So I read Krugman for his economic analysis on things but do NOT think he has a clue on the political side.
Well, here’s a post by Krugman from January 6, 2009:
“I see the following scenario: a weak stimulus plan, perhaps even weaker than what we’re talking about now, is crafted to win those extra GOP votes. The plan limits the rise in unemployment, but things are still pretty bad, with the rate peaking at something like 9 percent and coming down only slowly. And then Mitch McConnell says ‘See, government spending doesn’t work.’”
Seems like he was kind of on the money about that, and it was a pretty significant thing to be right about.
On policy he’s right. It’s on politics that he has a blind spot. A bigger stimulus was needed. A bigger stimulus was not going to be had with the Congress PBO had to work with.
As noted, I don’t disagree with his analysis on what was needed. And actually it was even worse with the top UE rate at 10.2%. At times on politics he seems to be with the very far left in thinking that PBO is a magician who can move either the earlier or current Congress to do what he wants.
He is 100% right about the policy, and I’m pretty sure PBO agrees. But, PBO need to deal with terrorists and Krugman only have to write.
Yep. PBO actually has said that he reads Krugman’s column.
Exactly. And, as I asked the question, it was about the politics, not the policy. The idea that PBO ever had a slam dunk majority in his first two years is a lie. He had to deal with a GOP that wanted nothing but for him to fail, and Blue Dogs who were scared of their own shadows. I wish the stimulus had been bigger. But politically it was unachieveable.
Keep in mind that originally Krugman was only offering 600 billion. 175 billion dollars less than the President’s proposal.
Ever since then he’s been trying to get out in front of this parade.
Ah, I didn’t know that. Interesting. And typical.
On the Romney response to Newt’s departure …. do Mitt and Ann know who Newt and Callista are? Or did they just get a campaign person to pull the “nice” form-letter response out of the file cabinet, put the proper names in and submit it to the press. Gotta go with Smith on this one … that response is creepy.

compare PBO yesterday to this oldie moldie, where the president republicans picked, twice, was taken out by a pretzel. no joke:
we must never forget the horror republican voters foisted upon the world, and continue to try with insanity such as palin and mittbot. crazy!
The Obama administration announced Wednesday that it has charged 107 individuals for nearly $500 million in false Medicare billings as a result of recent efforts against fraud.
Officials praised the haul as the largest single “takedown” in the history of Medicare’s anti-fraud force, which bridges the Justice Department and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
“Our ongoing fight against healthcare fraud has never been more coordinated and effective,” Attorney General Eric Holder said.
“We are determined to bring to justice those who violate our laws and defraud the Medicare program for personal gain.”
The message President Obama will be pushing as he officially launches his reelection campaign this weekend is clear, thanks to the seven-minute video ad released by his campaign earlier this week.
Entitled “Forward,” the video spends a good deal of time looking backward — not just to the achievements of his first term, but to the scale of the economic crisis that confronted him when he first took office.

re: Vanity Fair article about PBO
so earlier I saw the link several people posted about PBO and his ex-girlfriends. I gotta admit, as soon as i clicked on the link and read the title, I got squeamish. I don’t like that. I thought and said aloud to my co-worker: “why is this woman writing about her relationship with a very public figure that was over 30 years ago? Also, the man is happily married with two young kids.” —– I read the article and finished feeling the same way. This article doesn’t add anything to the conversation, nor should it have, but still, I believe it’s a waste. First because it’s impolitic, second because there is nothing in that article about PBO I didn’t know (i.e.: he’s very erudite) other than, with those two women, he was emotionally distant until he met and married our Michelle who we all know don’t take no crap and had PBO toeing the line in no time.
Again, this bit of information I could have done without as it adds nothing to the conversation. Instead, other people used the article to try to stir up shit. I just spent the last half hour looking up the words: ‘Vanity Fair and president Obama’ and one of the first things that came up was a Politico article basically saying PBO took “poetic license” with his book ‘Dreams’ when he spoke about his ‘New York Girlfriend’ they all but said PBO made up certain things in that area when it is clearly stated in his Intro that many people were composites who were compressed in the interest of maintaining the privacy of those individuals. asses. I’m really bothered that this woman would agree to the book. There was no purpose to it and you just don’t take part in the writing of a book about a happily married man with kids, especially when the relationship is 30 years old. That’s such bull. I can’t imagine being married to a man and finding out that his ex-girlfriend took part in the writing of a book about him. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
I don’t think it’s a big deal. The author sought her out—–and the first mentioned girl too. There is such utter fascination with President Obama and interest in knowing every detail of his very unique life. There was so much interest, in fact, that after I had read it and someone mentioned the comments, I couldn’t access the site—-overloaded. Everyone wants to fill in the blanks. This was so long ago that there is no need to be bothered by it. It’s part of his history. She has been married a long time, and everyone knows that our president has been very happily married a long time. I don’t think anyone ever thought that Michelle was the first girl he was ever interested in, just the most important, the love of his life. President Obama had already exposed his relationship with this girl in his composite sort of way in his book. And I don’t blame her for agreeing to tell the truth of her relationship with someone who became POTUS. And PBO cooperated with the author also, clarifying this time and his relationships from way back when he was 22 years old.
Completely agree with your take Dotster. Couldn’t have said it any better. That’s partly how I viewed the article also.
Very well stated.
I understand your point of view. I’m just looking at it from a personal level. Pretty sure the last thing most people would want is for their exes 30 years from the past taking part in a book about them, makes me shudder.
What the ex-girlfriend is doing is wrong. I feel sorry for Michelle. She should have kept her old journal to herself. Revealing such personal details about a married man, with a pre-teen is not right. Especially since that pre-teen uses the internet.
I don’t feel sorry for Miche cause there’s nothing to feel sorry for. PBO cared for the ex-girlfriend but Miche swept him off his feet. The thing for me is that it’s ridiculous to release old so-called ‘love letters’ and journals about someone 30 years down the line. To me, she reveals nothing about PBO that I didn’t already know. She was just one girlfriend on a list of other girlfriends before he found Miche. To me she doesn’t matter so I don’t see why her accounts of anything should take prominence in a biography of the president. If she was the so-called “deepest romantic relationship of his young life,” how comes the best she got was “thank you” to her “I love you’ and how comes she kept complaining about the ‘veil’ and his “guardedness” and “coolness.” This was a pointless endeavor. The author would have done better to just write a book about PBO without making the central characters two of his exes. Seriously.
Rubbed me the wrong way as well…and i do not like the billing….Love Letters….
but i suppose if everyone is making money off the President…she felt that perhaps she should as well…
crass. that’s the word. I hope none of my exes decide to take part in books about me 30 years down the road. Heaven forfend.
I haven’t read the Vanity Fair article, but a Politico article provides this quote by the author that apparently comes from the woman’s diary. She was telling that early on he told her of an ideal women he had been seeking since adolescence:
“Who was this ideal woman? Genevieve conjured her in her mind, and it was someone other than herself. She wrote, “I can’t help thinking that what he would really want, be powerfully drawn to, was a woman, very strong, very upright, a fighter, a laugher, well-experienced—a black woman I keep seeing her as.”
That description describes Michelle perfectly. He is obviously powerfully drawn to her.
As noted previously, the irony of these guys infusing 100s of millions into the economy to spread their lame lies and thereby contributing to the recovery always brings a smile to my face given that they have no idea how effective we all are, now, in crushing everyone of those lies, immediately and comprehensively.

Chrysler skips summer shutdown to meet demand
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Chrysler Group is working through the summer — forgoing its seasonal maintenance shutdown — in order to keep up with booming demand, the automaker said on Wednesday.
“In the past, we have shut down for two weeks [in the summer] to do model changeovers and maintenance,” said Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson. “This year, we will not be doing that. They will run through the summer with no down time.”
The summer shutdown in the auto industry is a tradition! This is a BFD.
Imagine that. Detroit “worker gravy time” has been put on hold so everybody can make more money. What’s the world coming to.(snark).

Nice one from The People’s View:
Concerning the Vanity Fair excerpt of the new book……it was interesting, and I think it fills in blanks for people who say the president has unknown (read subversive) parts of his life. This clears up a rather opaque period of the President’s life for many people, and it’s out now, not in October, another nine day wonder.
It just showed me how intelligent and well read he is. What a pleasure to have a man of this intellectual stature as president. What a change from the first eight years of this century. Of course, I know not everyone is so thrilled…..but I waited a long time for this to happen, and I’m going to rejoice in it!
I agree with your perspective, carolyn. Plus the president is now a historical figure and the author appears to be writing this for posterity, not as a hatchet job.

Someone please tell me, how many more minutes to the NBC special broadcast on the killing of UBL?
Lisa dear, I see where you are coming from but all that is in the past and the women didn’t say anything about him that we didn’t know already; that the President at such a young age was wise, kind, loving and a deep thinker. The President was just waiting until he found his one true love, Michelle and he didn’t settle. He was also trying to find his true identity and he did so after a lot of soul searching
If any of those women had become his wife he wouldn’t have achieved all that he had. They can talk to whomever, they can say whatever, he loves Michelle and he will tell these women that if he ever meets them face to face.
Nothing they can come up with will ever let us lose respect for him. I agree the women should have just kept their mouths closed but everyone is looking to ride on the President’s coat tail.
I am sure all of his girlfriends wish it had worked out for her but when something or someone is not for you it is not for you. The President was looking for a woman who had a family that would embrace him and nurture him and he found that in the Robinsons.
So all the women who he courted or were serious with for a while should just remember the good times and just say no comment. But if they did that we’d not be privy to those writings that he sent them.
I wish my first boyfriend had spelled that good. I had to drop him when his first letter to me was full of spelling and grammar errors.
