    BBC FP

US President Barack Obama has ended months of hedging on the issue of gay marriage by saying he thinks same-sex couples should be able to wed.

He has become the first sitting US president to back gay marriage.

Mitt Romney, the Republican who is set to challenge Mr Obama for the White House in November’s elections, promptly said he was against gay marriage.

In recent days, Vice-President Joe Biden and cabinet member Arne Duncan had expressed support for gay unions.

I watched the segment LIVE. I commend her for giving Pres. Obama the credit he deserves and for highlighting that even with/without him coming out for same sex marriage he has been lockstep with the LGBT community, has an impressive record of LGBT accomplishments, and has greatly advanced LGBT causes, benefits, and rights.

That was just the 8 minutes I was able to record amk, have a look at the full show when it’s on the MSNBC site. I loved that she built up to PBO’s gay rights record by highlighting the horror of went before, Shrub etc. Made it all the more powerful for me.

Ok. I went by what I saw her.

          I liked these BJ posts.

Thank you. I’m so fucking tired of the assholes around here who can’t concede for one moment that President Obama has ever done anything right. I had a front row seat during the AIDS epidemic, when the American President couldn’t be bothered to pretend that he gave a shit that literally thousands of Americans were dying, because they were gay. I watched every human being I loved curl up to die like stray cats in some alley, while the American President (and most of the American people)looked the other way. To everybody out there who can’t pass up the opportunity to shit all over anything remotely good, I have a message for you from a few hundred dead gay activists who spent the last breaths in their bodies fighting for the right to be treated like human beings in this country: Go fuck yourself. This matters, and those of us who get it are happy, and if you can’t be happy for our sake, that says more about you than it does this President or this moment.

I am a 52 year old Gay man. The Reverend is preaching the truth. Those of us old enough to come of age during the rise of HIV/Aids concomitant with Reagan and the Christian Right (Moral Majority) well remember the horrors of that era. Hatred and Homophobia and Hysteria ruled our lives. While our friends literally shriveled up and died? Seriously Gay Marriage debate 25 years ago? LOL. An fucking ABSURD concept that would never happen! Not in our life times (for those of us still around to grow old). What President Obama has done for the Gay/Lesbian community is simply amazing. A president publicly endorsing Gay Marriage versus some Senile has been actor who refused to even acknowledge or say the word AIDS or HIV. It’s a no brainer kids. Obama wins.

          Sums up my feelings.

So it was difficult for me to feel completely warm and fuzzy about what she said about him tonight. But! I am so proud of our President and I encourage everyone to donate if you can, he will need it. Putin pulls out of US summit, meeting with Obama (Medvedev is coming in his place)

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47363742

    By ANNE GEARAN
    AP National Security Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is skipping a planned visit to the United States this month for an economic summit and a much-anticipated meeting with President Barack Obama, the White House announced Wednesday.

The Russian leader told Obama by phone that he is unable to join the other leaders of the Group of Eight industrial nations meeting outside Washington on May 18-19 because he needs to finish work setting up his new Cabinet, the White House said. The Obama administration had moved the gathering to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland from the planned venue in Chicago partly to accommodate Putin.

Neither the White House nor the Kremlin had discussed the change in plans until Wednesday, but a White House official said National Security Adviser Tom Donilon was informed of it when he visited Putin and other Russian officials in Moscow last week.

There was no immediate confirmation of the change in plans from the Kremlin.

Putin took power this week, returning after six years to a post he had previously held for two terms. He made sharp criticism of the United States a central theme in his election, but it is not clear whether he will pull back from cooperation with the United States in several areas begun by former President Dmitry Medvedev.

“The two presidents reiterated their interest in the sustained high-level dialogue that has characterized the reset of relations and the substantial progress of the last three years,” since Obama took office, the White House said in a statement outlining the phone call Wednesday…

The statement listed several areas of cooperation such as nuclear security and nonproliferation, the war in Afghanistan and Russian membership in the World Trade Organization. It did not mention whether the leaders discussed areas of disagreement, such as the international response to violence in Syria.

Medvedev, who changed places with his mentor Putin as Russia’s prime minister, will fill in for Putin at the G-8 meeting, the White House said. Obama made headlines at his last meeting with Medvedev at a nuclear security summit in South Korea in March, when Obama was overheard saying he would have more flexibility to work with Russia on missile defense after the U.S. presidential election.

Republicans pounced on the remark, saying the president has a hidden agenda that could include concessions to the Russians if he wins re-election… (more in the article)

I’m not convinced that this isn’t a planned cancellation. After the nonsense that ensued after the open mic incident, the summit would have been overshadowed by media speculation of every blink and sneeze. Better for their first meeting to happen later – preferably after the election.

    Chips,

I commend Rachel for finally saying what has already been known, that the Obama administration has been the most progressive and supporter of LGBT issues by their action and not just fake rhetoric ala Clinton.

But I did have to roll my eyes when she said she “personally” doesn’t care what words a pol says she personally believe in action…oh really Rachel, so all these years, all the BS she did before and after the DADT vote that POTUS doesn’t really believe in marriage equality even though his record had been and would be even more stellar…now she says hey words don’t matter? Whatever.

Another thing, like other people on twitter her segment with Barney Frank where Barney Frank made the same debunked claims about AA being at fault for Prop 8 and NC A1 pissed me off and sours the whole segment for me. Rachel has called out GOP for less when she interviews them, but she did nothing to challenge Barney Frank’s statement.

Right now after POTUS annoucement liberal such as Maddow and other LGBT activist needs to be really careful about blaming the passage of these amendment on AA when there is no clear evidence that it is true. They need to push back even on people they respect in the Dem leadership.

Some political context, totally skipped by me, was mentioned on LOD tonight: Unions were already mad about holding the Dem convention in NC (a right-to-work state), then yesterday’s Amendment 1 vote in NC.

  20. May 9, 2012 at 10:17 pm

I just want to say that, 75% of me is so happy that obama has finally stated that how he feels about equal treatment of gays/lesbian but 25% of me is pissed off and angry that he was forced to make this move before he was ready. Sometimes I get frustrated that the progressives/left and LGBT don’t see the bigger picture in their fight for equal rights. I think by him making this move will mobilize the base to vote for him, donate money to him and canvass for him, BUT there is a strong possibility that North Carolina is off the table for him winning now, and he may lose a lot of votes in the midwest/rust belt states because of this and I hope this was worth it now before his relelection. This is going to be a close election and him losing one vote could tip the outcome whether it is congressional seats or senate seats. You know Karl Rove and the KOCH bros will be pounding the congressional districts about this very issue and this will be asked of those incumbants running in conservative districts or states. Get ready for “SENATOR TESTER DO YOU AGREE WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE?” And he is running a red state like Montana. Or Claire McKaskill, Joe Mancin, or all those running in deep red districts. We all know how he felt about gay marriage, but I wished he could have waited until he got re-elected before admitting his true feelings. I just pray and hope this won’t affect his status with conservative democrats/moderates/independents in states like Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. I am trying to stay optimistic about his chances. We just have to not rock the boat anymore with issues that could change the outcome of this election.

This is what happens when we feed the alligators. He mentioned that though PBO had said SSM was a state issue that there was wiggle room there—– meaning that he wants to ignore the fact that marriage is a states issue and I guess try to force PBO to do something about SSM. What an idiot.

      May 10, 2012 at 12:10 am

This guy needs to be sent back to school to learn how our federal system of government works! When it comes to the issue of gay marriage, the President has no power to do anything about it. The President can’t issue an executive order ordering states to recognize gay marriages. Nor can he issue an executive order to overturn a law passed by Congress and signed by a previous president. DOMA was passed by Congress and signed into law by Bill Clinton. There are two avenues to overturn DOMA: the U.S. Supreme Court would rule that the law unconstitutional, or another act of congress overturning DOMA. The most viable way to end state bans on gay marriage nationwide is for the Supreme Court to rule state prohibitions of gay marriages were unconstitutional. I suppose Congress could also pass a law, under the authority of the Fourteenth Amendment, outlawing state discriminations against gays who choose to marry. However, given the current political reality, I highly doubt that would happen.

This is not the same thing as a president, acting as Commander in Chief, and in the absence of an act of Congress, ordering the integration of the military, as President Truman did in 1948. Segregation in the military was based on customary practice and not laws enacted by Congress. I heard this argument raised by some gay activists during the debate over DADT. They argued that President Obama could issue an executive order, just as Truman did with racial integration, to overturn DADT. What they failed to realize was that DADT was a law enacted by Congress and thus could not be overturned by an executive order.
