Thanks ladies (extra cheesy smile). As I was reading the Cory Booker Twitter saga, I saw a tweet from Chips telling us to chat away in a new post. I jumped on it, expecting to be #50…hence the testing :) . I’m a serial lurker who loves it here. All of you are wonderful and I’m always driving Obama Mamas here from a site called Babycenter. We need all the help that we can get to win this election.

Thank you Mayor @CoryBooker for the straight talk this morning – “Booker Calls Obama’s Bain Attacks ‘Nauseating’” http://www.mediaite.com/tv/mayor-cory-booker-democrats-and-republicans-shouldnt-be-making-election-about-crap/

Booker is an ass. From what I’ve read, he compared the Obama campaign ad to the racist Rev Wright attack ad promoted by the RW. THAT is nauseating!!

I am very disappointed in Cory Booker. What is he audutioning for in the Republican party? Robney is running on his record at Bain and this is one of the most important thingsfor which the campaign can hold him accountable. comparing Rev. Wright to Bain is like comparing apples and oranges. When a Dem get a compliment from old man McCain, you know he has screwd up. Cory should be ashamed of himself.

Another excellent Tweet for Booker, COS! Why are you Auditioning for the Republicon Party? Because you just threw the Democratic Party Away, Booker.

We will overcome this and sail to Victory in Spite of Cory Booker.

Well, this is the end of any positive feelings that I had about Cory (et tu Brute).

    • May 20, 2012 at 2:30 pm

And here’s the next cycle. After it’s over Team Obama will still be running Bain attack ads. Even if they don’t the point is made. Romney is a vulture capitalist job destroyer. They’re not going to be dissuaded from pointing that out by either the Beltway media or a surrogate who fell for the pox on both houses okey doke.

He just wants to cozy up to Wall Street money (the crybabies who rape the economy and want the President to give a speech saying how great they are and misunderstood.). He’ll be running for Senate in 2014 and figures people have short memories.

  12. May 20, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Well, good getting up Sunday all my O’s!!! I have my slow cooker and my laptop out on the deck. I just caught up on the threads since my last log-in yesterday. It seems I should be happy that I missed the morning MTP today. I thought Booker was a genuine up-and-comer. Well, so much for that. Since I missed it, I won’t make a judgment, but how can 4,328,657,000 tweets be wrong? Bummer. In other news, I’ve been getting glimpses of the local coverage of the NATO protestings. Unless, I’ve missed something (wouldn’t be the 1st time), things are not too badly out of whack.

Lastly, my condolences to HolyMoly24 and Carla on the lost of their moms.

convert your responses to provide more info that supports PBO.

From Reuters – NATO chief: No “rush for the exits” in Afghan war

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/05/20/us-nato-summit-idUSBRE84J02C20120520
By Missy Ryan and Phil Stewart
    CHICAGO | Sun May 20, 2012 1:26pm EDT

(Reuters) – NATO’s chief sought on Sunday to dispel fears of a “rush for the exits” in Afghanistan as Western allies gathered to chart a path out of an unpopular war that has dragged on for more than a decade.

[snip] The shadow cast by fiscal pressures in Europe and elsewhere followed leaders from Obama’s presidential retreat in Maryland to the talks on Afghanistan, an unwelcome weight on countries mindful of dwindling public support for a costly war that has not defeated the Taliban in more than 10 years.

Obama, hoping an Afghan exit strategy will help shore up his chances for re-election in November, will attempt to put the focus on a common alliance vision for gradually turning over security responsibility to Afghan forces and pulling out most of the 130,000 NATO troops by the end of 2014.

But the Chicago talks are likely to be marked by undercurrents of division, especially with France’s new President Francois Hollande now planning to remove its troops by the end of 2012, two years ahead of the alliance’s timetable.

Seeking to paper over differences, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen expressed confidence that the alliance would “maintain solidarity within our coalition” despite France’s decision.

“There will be no rush for the exits,” Rasmussen told reporters. “We will stay committed to our operation in Afghanistan and see it through to a successful end.”

But signaling tensions over the issue, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters: “We went into Afghanistan together, we want to leave Afghanistan together.”

Hollande repeated a pledge during his inaugural visit to Washington last week to pull “combat troops” from Afghanistan this year. He has said an extremely limited number of soldiers would remain to train Afghan forces and bring back equipment beyond 2012.

“This decision is an act of sovereignty and must be done in good coordination with our allies and partners,” said Hollande, who will discuss his exit plans with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday.

Careful French comments on the issue illustrate the balance NATO leaders strike as they seek to avoid the appearance of splits with NATO partners without alienating voters who want to see a swift exit.

Alliance leaders may use the same approach in discussions this weekend of long-term funding for Afghan police and army, whose ability to battle the Taliban is at the core of NATO strategy for exiting Afghanistan smoothly.

The Obama administration has been seeking promises from its allies in Afghanistan to give $1.3 billion a year for Afghan forces. While there are few doubts allies will eventually provide support, it appeared unlikely heading into the summit that it would meet that goal by the end of the meeting. ID:nL1E8GIERC]

Rasmussen, speaking on CNN on Sunday, said a key motivation for coughing up the funding is “at the end of the day it is less expensive to finance the Afghan security forces to do the combat than to deploy our own troops.” [more in the article]

Have Mercy! I am just logging in and read what Corey Booker did this morning. Why, why can’t we Dems ever learn to not step all over our message. I cannot for the life of me understand why we do this to ourselves. I have had nothing but admiration for Corey but how on earth could he not understand what this would do to the President. Now here PBO is in the middle of all this great international policy and it will be stepped all over by someone who is suppose to be on our side completely off message. Two steps forward and one step backward…This stuff just pisses me off!!!

    • 83 MK
      May 20, 2012 at 2:58 pm

      Donna Dem,
Actually I find this all extremely hilarious. The media will have its feeding frenzy and this will be forgotten in a couple of weeks. I’ll say this though: “Senator-in-Waiting” Booker knew exactly what he was doing when he said what he said. He calculated (correctly) that rank and file Dem voters would not remember this in 2014. He also calculated (correctly) that his Wall Street backers would LOVE what he said. Cory Booker is nothing if not ambitious. Friends of mine who are education activists in New Jersey attest to the fact that he is incredibly opportunistic and is willing to throw folks under the bus in a minute. This is simply the latest example of this. Nothing wrong with looking out for oneself (I guess). I’ll tell you this much, I have never been a Cory Booker fan. Mainly because I am never a “fan” of any politician. The aim of all politicians is to further their careers by continuing to get elected to higher office. That is not a bad thing. It is unfortunate that Booker felt that he had to do it at the expense of the President in this instance. But I will tell you one thing for sure: no one understands what Booker just did better than Barack Obama. I imagine that he might even have chuckled as he watched him and tipped his cap to Booker. He knows that this will not derail his campaign or stop the campaign from making Bain an issue. Romney is the one who brings up his “business” experience so Bain is fair game. Anyway I hope that you don’t get too worked up about this. Politics ain’t bean bag and Cory Booker is one of the MOST political pols out there. Now he has simply unmasked himself for all to see how deep his ambition runs. It may look ugly but this is how the game works…

      • 84 Janelle
        May 20, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Thank you for this comment MK—this is very much the case. Steve Kornacki did an article saying that this was definitely a wink to potential donors down the line. I’ve always been aware of Cory Booker’s ambitions from the start, and they are very strong indeed. I’m sure some folks forget as time goes by, but personally…..I never forget things done at PBO’s expense. It is what it is…..I remain calm and focused though.

        • 85 MK
          May 20, 2012 at 3:13 pm

Janelle, you are right on target to “remain calm and focused.” I’ve always liked Steve Kornacki and will have to read his piece. I just continue to plug away to help the campaign in the ways that I can. I am not going to get distracted by the nonsense. Cory Booker will reap what he has sown. He will now have to get on TV to “explain himself” which will only keep the issue of Bain alive for another week. That’s a good thing IMO. The more people recognize how Romney made his millions the better. So do I think that Cory Booker has engaged in rank politics, yes. Do I think that he is an opportunist, yes. Am I going to waste a lot of energy yelling and screaming about this, no. I have to admit to being glad that Cory Booker is finally exposing himself to the public in a more truthful way. I think that many people were unaware about just how self-interested Booker is and has always been. Now it is clear and people can make their decisions to support him or not in the light of day. There is nothing bad about that.

          • May 20, 2012 at 4:09 pm

I’m not sure PBO is tipping his cap. I know none of his campaign staff are. There is always someone stepping on their carefully planned campaign and message, making the road more difficult than need be. I keep picturing his big bud Christie tricking Booker with a planned “bi-partisan” campaign, saying, “Okay, you go out there on MTP and say any criticism of Bain is nauseating, and then next week I’ll go on and say any personal attack on Obama is nauseating, deal?” And then Christie walks away laughing because he knows there is no bi-partisanship with this class of Repubs and he will never be going on any show to say any unfair attack on Obama is nauseating. I think Booker got played.

        I’m feeling you, MK.

I just logged on a few minutes ago and just skimmed the comments and I get the gist of what happened. I agree with you — I doubt PBO is sweating over this. Cory obviously let the response to his fire rescue gas his head up, and he thinks he’s quite special right about now. LOL. I have had a positive opinion of him in the past, but when I saw his little skit/ad with Christie, I knew he was feeling himself. He thinks he’s cute, but I’m not impressed. The “both sides do it” is the ultimate in political pandering, and in intellectual laziness. The bright lights got to him, and he wilted under them.

He gets the side eye from me from now on. I’m not even disappointed, it is what it is.

        • 88 MK
          May 20, 2012 at 3:21 pm

          PoliticalJunkessa,
I love giving folks to “side eye.” In fact, I have perfected it to an art form, LOL! Anyway, how much do you want to bet that Cory Booker will be working OVERTIME for the POTUS now. Do you think that a single black person in the state of New Jersey won’t remember this treachery in 2014 if Barack loses in 2012? You don’t to answer that question – it’s rhetorical :)

Anyway, Cory Booker is unimportant in the long-run. He is a blip in what will be a long and tough campaign. I’m off to the Nato protest and keep giving folks the “side eye.” They deserve it.

I know MK but this President works so hard on these events and just when he has the attention of the world forcing our lazy, sloppy, sensational driven media to focus on what he is accomplishing along comes a Dem who gives them another reason not to focus of the policies at hand. That part of it has to be frustrating for President Obama because it sure is frustrating for me.

Anyway, this too shall pass and fast. The 24 hour zoo will pounce on something else soon. This is going to be a DUMBASS campaign. We are all prepared for that and we are strategic. We never forget the long game. The President is blessed to have supporters like you who just keep living in the light. How can he go wrong? Have a great rest of your Sunday I am on my way Downtown to protest NATO (peacefully of course). We need to build pressure for more investment here and less militarism abroad. The Barack Obama, I know, appreciates dissent so I am off to dissent.

Steve Kornacki at “Salon” has already written that the comment was calculated by Booker and is very much in line with the way he operates. He believes that Booker is looking towards a Senate run, and the comment was made to play to his many Wall Street backers.

Booker has said Mayor Bloomberg is his mentor, and this may be a way of demonstrating his independence from the party as Bloomberg has done throughout his career. He does not have the net worth that Bloomberg does, and this could really backfire on him. Booker will never be the same in the eyes of many.

He is more than entitled to be out for himself, but then, he shouldn’t be presenting himself as a surrogate for POTUS. That is a cowardly act to hide behind the President’s campaign. There is no doubt he would be welcome on all the MSM programs to promote himself, especially if he does so at the expense of PBO. He should at least have the courage to to so honestly. Of course when he decides to run for national office, he will expect the President to campaign for him.

  25. 98 globalcitizenlinda
    May 20, 2012 at 2:46 pm

Can we try to convert the negative into positive in Booker’s statements? this is what PBO always does best which is to use the negative attacks on him and try to convert them into positive

why not make this trend instead:

Unless he is tone deaf, Mayor Booker has got the point that he has stepped in it.

      Awesome idea!

Like what you said in the previous post: “I am taking myself to a corner to focus, focus, focus, focus on the question: “how does my actions and speech help to get PBO re-elected?” This puts those words into action. Love it, love it, love it!

I believe that this is the central question of every one who supports PBO. We should examine out speech and actions to see whether or not they are making a positive contribution to the re-election of PBO

seriously, if Booker runs for president, I won’t vote for him because having him as president would probably be the same as having a repug (what with all his WS buddies and his eagerness to kiss repug ass i.e.: Chris Christie). If he thinks that the Rev. Wright issue is basically the same as Bain, then he is seriously delusional. O’Malley all the way. Booker can go fuck himself if he isn’t already doing so.

I have a girlfriend in NJ who has always had the ‘side-eye’ on Cory Booker. She always said that we were believing the hype. Now, I see what she was talking about.

        May 20, 2012 at 3:08 pm

exactly. did you read the Steve Kornacki article about how before there was PBO, Booker was grooming himself to be president-http://www.salon.com/2012/05/20/cory_booker_surrogate_from_hell/ I’m not being hyperbolic here but I’m seriously not voting for that man when he runs. that’s an election I will be sitting out.

Kornacki’s artilce did shed a lot of light on Cory. Now I see why he did that stupid thing with Christi which made no sense.

        • May 20, 2012 at 4:18 pm

If he’s the official nominee, I would vote for him. However, I reserve the right to vote against him in the Democratic primaries.

Oh I totally understand how you feel though so no judgments here. I have always given Cory Booker the side eye. NOW its a side eye with a raised eyebrow and a twisted mouth. I won’t forget what he did today and will watch him even closer now.

      May 20, 2012 at 3:12 pm

Basically, Booker is selling his soul to Wall street for his political ambitions and throwing the grassroot supporters who would be his foot soldiers under the bus, hoping that they forget. I hope the campaign double down on Bain and ignore everythingthat he said. There is no way to dress up what Bain did to average citizens and Cory knows that. So he will be the subject of discussion next week and the MSM meme and Romney ad. Like I said shame on him. So he is showing his colors already and would be one of those conservadems who would be owned by Wallstreet.

      • May 20, 2012 at 4:16 pm

I don’t see how he would even get elected to statewide office after that. Obama supporters in NJ might not be so fond of him after today.

RUNNING A BUSINESS IS NOT THE SAME AS RUNNING A COUNTRY

PJ, I didn’t see the segment with Cory Booker criticizing the Bain ads, but seriously if Mitt Romney says that his “main qualification” for being the leader of the free world is that he has a couple of degrees from Harvard and he was the CEO of Bain why is anyone surprised to see ads questioning his job creation claims. I wonder what Cory Booker feels would be an acceptable ad. Should President Obama’s team just ignore Bain? Give me a break.

Meanwhile, Romney does not talk about his time as governor or MA. And he has the nerve to tout the 2004 Olympics as if that is some great qualification. Maybe Cory Booker should checkout Romney Economics website so he can get educated on exactly what was happening. President Obama’s team is doing what they should be doing. They are educating the public and debunking the myth that Mitt Romney was a job creator. This is just another flip flop of convenience from Romney. It is laughable that he now pretends he was a job creator.

      FROM ROMNEY ECONOMICS:

      ===========================

For nearly 20 years, Mitt Romney specialized in corporate buyouts.

It’s an experience he cites as a key credential for running for president. And while it’s true that Romney’s business philosophy often led to profit for him and his partners, far too often it came at great cost to American workers and their communities.

At first, Romney focused primarily on venture-capital deals, investing in start-ups or companies that were looking to expand. But by the early ’90s, Romney and his partners began looking for bigger payouts with less risk, believing there was more money to be made buying and selling existing businesses than growing new ones.

Using what’s called a “leveraged buyout,” Romney and his investors would take control of a successful business, paying only a fraction of the total price. The rest would be paid for by loading the company up with debt, using the firm they were buying as collateral—so ultimately the company, not Romney, would be responsible for paying back the debt.

That left Romney and his partners free to extract as much profit from the companies as possible.

In the face of mounting debt, the company would then be forced to cut costs—often by reducing wages and benefits, closing factories and stores, and laying off workers. Sometimes, this debt was enough to drive the company into bankruptcy.

Mitt Romney wasn’t trying to build companies for the long term. His plan was to maximize short-term profits, and then resell all or part of the business before the debts came due.

The goal was never to create jobs—the goal was to create wealth for investors, as even his former partner admitted.

All investments involve risk, but under Mitt Romney’s leadership he and his partners carefully structured deals so that even when the companies in question went bankrupt, Romney and his investors maximized their potential gain. Using this model, they made millions, even while driving some businesses into bankruptcy and leaving workers without jobs, health care, and pensions.

Mitt Romney and his partners played by their own set of rules, and practiced a model that was profitable for a handful of corporate investors, but sometimes devastating for local communities.

This is the experience that Mitt Romney now cites as his qualification to be president, and the economic philosophy he would bring to the entire country.

But the real strength of our economy is a growing, thriving middle class, where everyone plays by the same rules and everyone gets a fair shot.

Administration shows frustration at Pakistan over ground routes
    http://www.wgntv.com/news/chi-chi05202012natosummitupdatesstory-20120520,0,4691083.story

Obama administration officials are showing growing frustration at Pakistan’s refusal to reopen ground routes used to move fuel and other war supplies into Afghanistan, a six-month standoff that the White House had hoped to resolve before the NATO summit that starts here today.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is scheduled to meet with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on the sidelines of the summit, which will chiefly focus on winding down the war in Afghanistan. But White House officials ruled out a meeting between Zardari and President Obama, in an apparent sign of their displeasure at what they view as Pakistan’s intransigence.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen cancelled a meeting with Zardari, citing the Pakistani leader’s late arrival in Chicago. And Pentagon officials said Defense SecretaryLeon E. Panetta would meet officials from five countries in Central Asia that have provided an alternative, but considerably more expensive, northern land route for NATO supplies since Pakistan closed its roads last fall.

After weeks of closed-door negotiations, U.S. officials did not deny that they are seeking to send the Pakistanis a public message.

“If they’re feeling a little bit of pressure this weekend, they should,” said a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of diplomatic sensitivities. “The U.S. and NATO are ready to move beyond this issue.”

Pakistan closed its roads to trucks that supply NATO forces in Afghanistan after a mistaken U.S. air attack on Pakistani border posts killed two dozen Pakistani troops last November. The incident capped months of crises between Washington and Islamabad that added intense pressures to the two nation’s long-fraught relationship.

Pakistan officials recently demanded that the United States and NATO pay more than $5,000 for each truck entering its territory, a substantial increase over the previous $200 charge. In an interview last week, Panetta all but ruled out paying that much although U.S. officials are willing to pay a higher rate than before to reopen roads from the port of Karachi to the Afghan border.

Pakistani officials also have demanded a formal U.S. apology for the border attack. The White House has expressed regret for the incident, but has refused to apologize, arguing that both sides were at fault.

If Pakistan doesn’t reopen the routes, NATO will face additional difficulties and expenses as it seeks to withdraw combat forces and military equipment over the next 2 1/2 years.

Panetta’s meeting with officials from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan is “to thank them for the northern routes,” the U.S. official said, adding “it’s not really directed at the Pakistanis.”

Russia also permits shipments across its territory but did not send senior officials to Chicago.
