ABC: President Barack Obama and his family have returned to their hometown this weekend as guests of honor at the wedding of Laura Jarrett, daughter of White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett …. the press are not allowed near the event….

…. The President, first lady, and daughters arrived in the city Friday evening and immediately proceeded to the home of Martin Nesbitt, a personal friend and resident of the neighborhood. In the downtime between get-togethers and the nuptial ceremony, they are making the rare move of staying in their actual house in the Kenwood neighborhood. Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, is also along for the trip.

….. despite the occasional inconvenience most neighborhood inhabitants take their mostly-absent neighbor as a point of pride. On Friday traveling press in the area spotted a Chevy Camaro parked in one driveway, adorned with a sign:

“Thank you for saving GM,” it reads, a reference to the president’s decision to bailout troubled American auto manufacturers from bankruptcy in 2009.

This will be the longest stretch that the family has spent in their home since winter 2009. They will remain here through tomorrow – Father’s Day – before the president travels solo to a G-20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico that evening.

Morning everyone ;-)

Oh, I thought I was ‘my turn’! Ah, well, as I have been globetrotting the coast of the French Mediterranean, I suppose I shall simply concede graciously and with a wide smile to my dear VC, who perhaps might agree to share a sip of Armand de Brignac Rose with me at Chips party later… (no cheesy puffs to go with that)…. GOOD MORNING CHIPSTICKS! Good morning everyone!

Pamela! ‘I have been globetrotting the coast of the French Mediterranean’ Is this virtually with Denea, or for real real? (I have a vague memory that you had said you might be going over sometime.) Man, if you are really there, or even only virtually there, leave a thought of me on one of the beaches because you can bet your patootie I’ll never be there in reality! What fun!

Don’t I wish it was real, and not virtual! Imagine being in the position of traveling like that! With your most precious daughter? Oh well, virtual life has it’s merits; meanwhile I shall be booking off to downtown Seattle shortly after breakfast and brushing my kitty!

Are you in Seattle? I confess I have NO knowledge of geography, so when you souls toss out all these names I have no mental reference. Sometimes I go look them up, but it never seems to stick. GG, LL, Meta, Tally, HZ and those guys are helping me to mentally fix the west coast , but the rest of it is always a blur, which can be a bother, because I don’t want to mess up when tweeting. /grumbling/ I really don’t see why you guys had to have FIFTY states! What was wrong with 10, or maybe even 15? Exceptionalism Greedy as usual!

                • June 16, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Hey VC – Seattle is on the West coast, north of California and Oregon, close to the border with British Columbia (just a couple of hours drive from Vancouver, sometimes three hours, because of the border crossing). It’s in the Western state of Washington. Same time zone with California et al on the West.

Still, I don’t think I have ever seen a man age so beautiful, even my awesomely handsome father, well, maybe my awesomely handsome father, but still, doesn’t it seem PBO just gets better and better, deeper and more interesting to behold, as the weight of the job he has taken on shapes him even more? Good Morning everyone. I was thinkiing how nice for President Obama to spend Father’s Day at their real home. Look at the 3rd picture of President Obama with the kids, and remember Mitt with those kids in Philly, not a smile any where from those kids. You know every single one of those kids want a copy of that picture, so they can tell their family and friends. I’m sure the parents what a copy too. I know I would.

Bringing this over from previous thread. Although I don’t go to Dkos at all, I often find gems like this from twitter:

“I wonder if this will make Rubio cough up a deal (3+ / 0-)
or a draft bit of legislation that he will claim is better, because this act by Obama is the sort of thing which has a creeping effect, and will haunt the Republicans if November goes ill, for the damage it will do them repealing it.And encourage pressure for a real and thorough reform from Congress, now and not in the sweet by and by of 2013 or whenever they get around to it.

It will certainly place pressure on Rubio to take some action if the purpose of his apparent candidacy for Veep is to corral Latino votes. Don’t work if you talk the talk and then don’t draft the draft legislation that does better for Latinos than what he’s talked.

It’s a straight up challenge as to the Latino and several other communities by Obama, because of the fact he underlines, that it is temporary, all he can do without Congress also acting, and there is a choice remaining in a hovering pattern over this choice as to whether someone else will have the will to reverse something that I suspect will be much more popular now that it is done, than it looked before the decision to do this was taken.

It’s also in its own way respectful of the division of powers, which leaves the matter even more squarely in Congress’ lap, not something Mitch and Boehner and Cantor want there.”

Not that this is a game, but President Obama beat Rubio to the punch. Rubio very much wanted to get some sort of immigration bill passed but the Republicans didn’t want anything to do with giving President Obama a win. If Rubio were smart he would get onboard with President Obama thereby setting himself up for the 2016 election.

I love that the kids always feel comfortable putting their hands on his shoulders or hugging him. They never seem self-conscious – they just naturally reach out (meanwhile, the media tells us he’s aloof). Look at the little boy in that picture above, with his hand so casually thrown over President Obama’s shoulder. Lovely!

        June 16, 2012 at 1:26 pm

Sorry – this comment was in response to Anniebella above.

My comment to Betsy – The only reason Romney says this will make a long term deal more difficult, is because they won’t be able to do the destruction they were planning to do to the immigrant populations, now that the immigrants have been given some hope for resolution. Plus, their argument to the Latino community that President Obama hasn’t done a thing on immigration now is in direct conflict with their cries that his unilateral decision to change the policy is “illegal” or “over-reach”. Which is it? Is the President responsible for immigration policy or isn’t he? They’ve whined and lied themselves into a very sharp corner.

More local reporting on the Obamas in Chicago! Interesting to see the difference in the local coverage, ABC crabbing about the police detail needed to cover their stay etc. This report is mostly about the local Hyde Park restaurants begging for the Obamas to visit. One pizza place said they can prove they were the Obama’s fave pizza place because upstairs is their usual table where Malia wrote her name in crayon —–and they have had it preserved so no one else can write over it and —-bragging rights!

I was reading some comments some where, forget where, but one of the comment ask the question where are the jobs? This person was talking about the President going to this wedding. So I gave a reply and I told them that there is a bipartisan Transportation bill pass by the Senate, sitting in the House gathering dust. The bill is paid for and all Speaker Boehner and the House Republicans have to do is pass it. So why haven’t they? The Republicans in the Senate block the President jobs bill, so if you want to know where the jobs are go ask John Boehner, Eric Canter, Mitch McConnell and the Republican Party. Who for years have been sabotaging this economy.

The House was “on vacation” AGAIN….but they can get this done and put 3 million people back to work! I’m going to write…we all can…don’t have to live in Ohio to do it, because he’s the Speaker(we should call him a mouthpiece, not a Speaker…because the crazy ass TP is the REAL Speaker!)

Thank you UTAL for these positive and informative tweets, just the kind of approach I was trying to espouse in the previous thread. I particularly like the fact you included a pertinent, informative link. I retweeted one, and intend to share one or two here and there throughout the days ahead. IMHO this is the path that Obamabots should be walking MORE and MORE over the months ahead – educate in response to the nonsense out there. I no longer want anyone reading my timeline to take away any sense of disgruntlement with the President (because I have none) and I DON’T WANT THEM TO HEAR ABOUT ANYBODY ELSE’S disgruntlement FROM ME!! I know I’ll have to be careful about the latter, but I intend to try my best not to repeat their absurdities when/if I respond to them. Thanks again and good work, UTAL! I do regularly get good info from you. Have a great Saturday!

I’m on my way to Dallas to see my three grandkids….can hardly wait! So, I”ll check in again Sunday night. But, had another thought about the prejudice from some…..it’s the old rural vs urban battle. President Obama is obviously an urban person, as are the majority of Americans. However, many, particularly in the South, still cling to the notion of rural, small town superiority over the urban person. Superiority in honesty, friendliness, trust, care for neighbors, godliness, etc. This is obviously a false dichotomy, but Lindsey Graham, Jeff Sessions, Jim Demint, and others definitely feel this way in addition to the racial factor. Many others where I live still hold to this too.
From my experience, just the opposite has happened in my life. But, I know enough not to make generalizations from personal experience, which is what they do without reason.
Remember, GWB bought a “ranch” in a godforsaken place, so he could play at the rural myth. My sister was an avid GWB fan…..why, I cannot explain! In 2002 she was doing some family searching in Texas…..I drove…..and she insisted I take her to Crawford. What a hole! It looks like a stage set for a C movie western, and that’s all it was, a stage set for GWB and his brush cutting. President Fox of Mexico even said he knew nothing about horses, which any rancher should.
So………a little different viewpoing, but one I think with some validity
    Have a great weekend everybody!

There’s been interesting commentary this week from the so called left leaning press this week on msnbc. They say Obama needs to tell Americans what his economic plans are. He needs to provide a vision for the future of the country. He can’t continue to blame Bush. He needs to tell the American people about his accomplishments. The speech Thursday was long. Give me a break.

It’s astounding to me. Did they listen to the 53 minute speech? He touched on every one of these points. I didn’t get to see the speech until last night. The President spoke about each of these points and I thought he explained where we’ve been, what happened, how it happened, why we haven’t progressed more, what the Republicans want to do, and what he wants to do.

The speech was too professorial Corn said. He didn’t say anything new Rendall said. Reporters, analysts, and all the other pundits who is suppose be on the side of the president need to get it together and not comment if they didn’t see the speech. The President pretty much has to do their damn job by explaining who, what, why, when, and where. He shouldn’t have to do that.

    • 72 desertflower
      June 16, 2012 at 10:52 am

Amen. It did all of what they were whining about, and then some. They never listen and they want to be relevant about something, ANYTHING, I guess. I never listen to them anymore…they are all going to complain themselves right out of a job…

      • June 16, 2012 at 11:48 am

What is ya’ll talking about? they gets payed to complain, If they complain about Obama rating increase. Its a game and money have the upper hand, right now the Republican have the money so the cable shows is going with the Republican, we have to get out the vote in order to win this election. Rendall and other Democratic are getting payed to complain about Obama, thats why booker did what he did, but he don’t know how to play the game. He was too harsh, Lets push back when they complain and lies, but don’t forget they are getting payed to lie. its not personal

        • 74 joyfulmeme
          June 16, 2012 at 12:17 pm

They should be getting paid to report the facts. Facts are facts. Enough of the BS. The speech was for the benefit of ordinary people who don’t stay on top of what’s really going on. The President has to explain what’s going on since the media who is supposed to be providing a public service doesn’t. The critiqes were unfair.

    • 75 Betsy
      June 16, 2012 at 11:01 am

I know what you mean. I was watching Mark Shields dissing PBO’s speech too, saying it was 3 15min segments of good combined into 1 hour of bad???? WTF does that mean. This really pissed me off as I thought his speech was a home run! Sigh.

    • 76 theo67

Luckily, the President doesn’t give his speeches for the political pundits. He gives his speeches for the people – the ones who vote and need help and maybe aren’t paying attention to everything on a daily basis. Since most of these pundits have never run for office, won a campaign or done anything really productive in their lives that would give them some perspective of what hard work looks like – then I don’t worry too much about their negative analysis. I’ll go with the people who put a black man with the name “Barack Hussein Obama” into the White House.

      #MediaFail.
-They accept ‘republican framing’. Report using republican descriptions/words. Blame PBO for ‘messaging problem’.
-They use Voter misinformation, i.e. Polls, to blame PBO for Voter anger & apathy.
-They decide the context of analysis and focus of their reporting, then blame PBO for lack of clarity.
-They speak of a ‘conventional wisdom’, that is NOT wisdom, and is only ‘conventional’ because they use it as a basis for their ‘analysis’. The ‘conventional’ part is an ass-covering excuse for LAZY ANALYSIS.

      – They don’t give us facts. They don’t connect-the-dots. They parse PBO words, and mislead by omission, then Blame voters for ignorance.

-They practice ‘sound-bite’ journalism, then blame us for our ‘inability’ to absorb substantive blocks of information. Apparently, WE are the ones who can’t ‘handle the truth’.

-They whine that PBO needs to lay out a clear, substantive agenda. When he does, they claim he is too ‘professorial’, too boring. They whine that he didn’t have enough useful ‘sound bites’. They berate him for not using ‘soaring rhetoric’ every time he speaks. They demand ‘emotional’ connection. These DEMANDS are not made of republicans.

-They DEMAND accountability from PBO. They don’t demand accountability from the republican leadership.

-They are the FILTER through which all ‘branding’, misinformation, and fundamentally DISHONEST reporting and analysis flows, but they blame PBO, for not ‘controlling’ the message.

-The Majority of the Voting public does not know the features of TheAffordableCareAct, ‘ObamaCare’. The Media BLAMES PBO. Isn’t it their job to inform people about new LAWS? Isn’t it their JOB to tell people about decisions made in Washington that affect our lives?

-republicans are BLOCKING Legislation: ViolenceAgainstWomenAct, Student Loan rate adjustment.
-republicans are BLOCKING JOBS: Transportation Bill, PBO Jobs Bills. Green Energy Subsidies.
-republicans are BLOCKING WOMEN’S RIGHTS: Access to Abortion, Access to Contraception, Access to affordable Health Care.
-republicans are BLOCKING REFORM implementation: Court challenges to Dodd/Frank, including ConsumerFinalcialProtectionBureau.
-republicans are BLOCKING PBO nominations: Federal Judges, Governing institutions and commissions
-republicans are BLOCKING military reforms: PBO Green mandate, close of Guantanamo, scraping unnecessary projects.
-republicans are ALLOWING our INFRASTRUCTURE to deteriorate.
REPUBLICANS LIE and most of the media ignores it. WHY?

FEAR. They all want to be the next ‘woodward & Bernstein’, but they’re AFRAID. They Fear GOP retribution. They fear being called PBO apologists. They fear being labeled ‘Liberal’ by FauxNews outlets.

The Internet & Social Media have begun a process of accountability, but it’s not enough.

News & ‘Political Opinion’ programming spans the entire day. There is plenty of time to report the facts and provide analysis. There is plenty of time to inform the public. When they want people to know something, they use repetitive reporting. We know all about the PennState pedifile. We know all about Trayvon Martin & his killer. We know all about Charile Sheen, and other useless nonsense. But, where is the REPETITION of republican OBSTRUCTION, republican DISHONESTY, republican economic SABOTAGE?

Me and my VAGINA want to know.

Mark Knoller explains why he (Mark) is late getting out of bed this morning

    • June 16, 2012 at 10:48 am

I swear Snark Knoller has got this guy down! :-)

      Gooooood morning all!

LOL. I guess he’s never caught up with an old friend and talked for hours. What a joy it must have been for PBO, just to kick-back, relax and talk with his old buddy. I am so glad he’s taking these days “off” just to be in his own home with his family, and visiting his friends. Awesome.

So was Mark hanging about nearby with a stop watch – 1:22AM/CT – sounds like my father in days long past.

Guess so. Shameful that he can give us exact time down to the minute of how long PBO spent at friend’s house, yet he cannot give us info about Willard’s tax returns.

Is spying/stalking synonymous with reporting in America?

Is Knoller also a part-time stalker in his private off-duty hours? Does the SS know about this?

Good morning, Chips and TOD ohana.

Thanks, Ms. Chips for all of the wonderful coverage. Do not forget to take some down time for yourself.

Every time I look at the photo of the girls from the Boys anfd Girls Club clinging to PBO and being in excited disbelief that he is there, I feel tears welling up. The way that he joyfully opens his arms wide to them and they way that they run to him as if he is their father, just says so much about who he is; so loving and warm toward every child. Another favorite from that day is of him sitting with one of the girls alone, listening to her and possible giving advice; a true father is a father to all children. We have seen this time and time again; the love, concern and joy just radiates from him.

    Happy Father’s Day, Mr. President.

If I had the know-how to isolate that picture, I would ‘twitterize’ it along with your caption

‘A true father is a father to all children. We have seen this time and time again with President Obama’

IMO it would make a very relevant Father’s Day tweet. Chips, you busy? IF YOU HAVE TIME, would you isolate and caption this particular picture for Tweeting?

I am sure the Hispanic community gets that and will come out in droves to re-elect PBO. If the GOP in congress had any sense, they should pass the Dream Act and take this political winner for PBO off the table. PBO will still get credit, but that would take one reason to re-elect PBO off the table. Either way, PBO wins, but the damage to the GOP may be lessened if they do pass it.

Romney’s an idiot. And anyone who benefits from this policy change who thinks of voting for Romney when he’s basically said that he plans to revoke this policy change if he makes it to the White House is an idiot, too.
