‘There for Amy: How Health Care Reform Helped One Iowa Couple’

Jeff Blum (Huffington Post): There are, perhaps, more than 100 million reasons to be thankful for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I want to mention just two of them.

Recently, thanks to USAction affiliate Iowa Citizen Action Network, we were introduced to Ross Daniels and Amy Ward. Their life – as difficult as it remains – would be in shambles today were it not for the ACA.

One year ago Amy … developed a rare fungal pneumonia called blastomycosis …. Within two days of being admitted to the hospital, she was placed on a ventilator as her lungs broke down. Her kidneys failed and she received dialysis …. She was given approximately one in three chance of survival, optimistic by many estimates.

Amy did survive, with the help of an astonishing array of the most advanced technology, medications, excellent doctors and amazing nurses. Ross watched Amy learn to walk again, and re-learn how to do the most basic activities of a normal life. Throughout this ordeal, there was one thing Ross didn’t have to worry about: their health insurance coverage running out. Because of the ACA – and yes, I will proudly call it Obamacare – Amy’s health insurance company had removed limits on coverage the year before.

….. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, while Amy was fighting for her life, Ross was able to cast aside worries of the potentially devastating impact this might have had on his family’s financial future….

Many thanks to Ross Daniels for getting in touch and asking me to post this piece – I never usually post stuff from Huffington Post, but this one is more than worth it.

There was another post here last September about Amy and Ross (here)

Thank you again Ross, wishing you and Amy all the best in the world.

I just find it unbelievably depressing that some of our fellow Americans will only realize they like Obamacare *if *the law is struck down. Utterly depressing. Sound bites and Americans are twos peas in a pod.

Contrary to what the press is drumming up, this sounds like an excellent meeting between Putin and PBO. Putin extended an invitation to PBO come to Moscow.

This is lovely! I had been really nervous about Putin taking back the reigns. Since he’s apparently got a stronger reputation for the economic prosperity he’s brought to Russians, he’d do well to continue the cooperation that Medvedev established with President Obama, since it opened the doors the the WTO (and greater trade opportunities), created openings for a Russian “silicon valley” through deals with California, and generally “reset” the relationship so it’s based on a positive, open relationship. I hope this lasts.

Putin has, as previously noted, only one functional port for Mediterranean and points south (Africa) operations – Tartus, Syria. That’s a big strategic issue, for sure. Am sure our masterful President Obama knows just how tough a spot Putin is in and is probably making the most of that knowledge ;)

Just shows his unwarranted ego that he would think the White House needed his approval. He’s not involved in any of the administrative agencies that handle immigration policy–not homeland security, not i.c.e., not doj, nothing. If he was that concerned, he should focus on that which he does have the job to effect–getting his fellow repubs on board with legislation for real immigration reform. That is his job–legislating. The president, white house, and administration have done their jobs; congress needs to do its job.

Oh gawd, poor Ruben’s cube. I don’t suppose he’s aware that no matter who consults with him his t-bagger collegiates have made it rather clear they are not in favor of a Dream Act. This is why it is so important we give President Obama a Congress he can work with.

Thanks for putting up a thread about Ross and Amy, Chips. I remember their story from last year and Ross visiting TOD. It’s wonderful to know ACA or ObamaCare (proud to call it that) has been there for them every step of the way and that Amy is recovering and will get much better.

Ross, if you’re out there, just wanted to say that I continue to wish you and Amy the best. May your future be filled with happiness, long life, and success. :)

“Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home–but not for housing. They are strong for labor–but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights. They favor minimum wage–the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all–but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine–for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing–but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing–so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.”

    I severely love Charles Pierce:

Remember all those stories about how Ann Romney was Willard’s “secret weapon” ….She’s as much of a walking parody as he is….

AP: Ann Romney, the wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, said Monday that she doubted she and her husband would vacation overseas as frequently as the Obamas if her husband were elected… “I doubt that,” Romney replied. “Our vacations and our happiness come from being with our children and our grandchildren.” First Lady Michelle Obama has drawn some criticism from conservative radio hosts for her international travel, including a trip to Spain where she lunched with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia……

Leave aside the following two obvious points: 1) Michelle Obama draws “some criticism from conservative radio hosts” just for being alive — I mean, seriously, AP, this is newsworthy exactly how? — and 2) suddenly, visits with heads of state qualify as vacation time when taken by this particular First Lady. The real point of the paragraph is that only the Romney money is allowed to vacation overseas. And then, of course, it gets worse:

Ann Romney didn’t rule out vacationing at all, noting the Romney family has their “own places for that.”

In fact, three of them, including the one in California where Mitt bravely chases away the local stoners.

For the love of Baal, why don’t they drop the pretense and just move to Versailles?

That statement by Willard sounded very much like he was beating the drums of war with Iran. So—–my suspicion seems to be correct—–it’s the war people/interests who are trying to win this for Willard and casting every bit of Obama news in a negative light. And he is their puppet on a string.

One thing that has not gotten alot of exposure is Mittens and his war mongering ways. If its now war with Iran…its war with Russia. HE and the media vastly overestimate America’s appetite for another war.

Senator Scott Brown said today that he will accept a debate at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, but only on the condition that Vicki Kennedy stay neutral in the election and MSNBC drop out as the sponsor.

The campaign said in a statement that it would agree to allowing Tom Brokaw to moderate. Elizabeth Warren has already accepted the Sept. 27 debate, but Brown had previously not committed. The candidates are jointly committed to two other televised debates so far, one in the Boston market and a second one in Western Massachusetts.

Vicki Kennedy, Senator Kennedy’s widow, had extended the invitation for a third debate. But she has been an active Democrat, causing some to question whether Brown should accept the invitation. In addition, MSNBC, home to many liberal talk show hosts, is scheduled to broadcast the debate.

“In order to proceed, we need to know that in keeping with the spirit of neutrality expressed in Vicki Kennedy’s letter that she will not endorse or otherwise get involved in this race,” Brown’s campaign manager Jim Barnett wrote in a letter to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

    These guys are FREAKS:

Three of the biggest names in West Virginia Democratic politics in West Virginia will skip the Democratic National Convention this summer, once again highlighting President Obama’s rocky relationship with the state’s electorate.

But if Sen. Joe Manchin, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Rep. Nick Rahall — all Democrats — thought pulling out of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte this September would earn them the respect of Republicans, they’re wrong.

Tomblin made it clear the decision was an Obama snub. Like Manchin, he’s refused to say whether he’s voting for Obama this November, and has publicly distanced himself from the president more than once.

    http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/06/gop-unmoved-by-west-virginia-dems-decision-to-skip-dem-convention.php

    • June 18, 2012 at 7:01 pm

….and they’ll be replaced by a teabutt in their next election.

    • June 18, 2012 at 7:04 pm

I guess pointing out that PBO got more votes in the recent primary than Romney won’t change their minds. Manchin is a piece of work.

    • June 18, 2012 at 7:10 pm

They are freaks, which is why their non-endorsement of PBO is FANTASTIC news for our President!!!

Maybe TPM can do a documentary on why Romney STILL cannot draw 75% of the GOP votes in most states despite an extensive pro-Romney MSM campaign and lots and lots of $$$$ being spent everywhere to help him.

Instead of wasting time worrying about 3 conservative, racist “Democrats’” support or non-support of PBO (who by the way doesn’t give fly’s ass about any of the three thugs mentioned in the article).

That so much for posting this CS. Blessings to all of you from both Amy and I. You have no idea what your simple words of encouragement have meant to both of us. The Obama Diary, above so mamy others have been “there for Amy” from the beginning.

Deep down, I still believe that the Supreme Court will see the humanity of this law, and not strike it all, if any, down. Regardless of the ruling, we will continue to speak out to the best of our abilities.
