Hiya amk, I’ve decided if I ever get stuck in the trenches I want that woman by my side – along with you, of course.

Well, now I’ve changed my mind about inviting you in to the trench with me and Stephanie. While I’d be awaiting instructions from her on how to survive the bombardment, you’d be there looking dreamily in to her eyes. And that would be no help at all.

 Chica, you have time to be on Facebook too! Regular job, TOD, TOD mailbox, multiple personalities on Twitter, SnarkK, birthday party organizer, …. Okay, fess up, how many hours do you get in YOUR day? At this rate I’m going to have to ask god if he took some of my hours and gave them to you. [Of course, there is a Biblical parable of the guy who got a lot of talents working hard to double it (like you work), and the other guy who got one talent (like me) burying it so it wouldn't get lost and ultimately losing it to the you type. You think the hours in our individual days, yours and mine, have been thusly re-ordered? I don't know, CC.]

                      Well hello there, Pamela person, how art thou today? Here’s a hug or 2 for you too. {{Pamela}}

You are one of the ones who got three or so talents and also works hard to double your portion, while I sit and watch the ground where I planted my one talent. ;) Naturally when guilt occasionally creeps in, I reassure myself with the thought that God has a reason for making different types, and that the one-talent watchers are needed to make the 3, 5, 10 talent workers look good. The reassurance usually works. :)

Why do the videos always cut the portion when PBO is in the crowd, to hear MSNBC, CNN, the rest, PBO is not a people person. I can never understand why these people always say that. Do they not see the President with people after his speeches, or interacting with his supporters. I am confused about this claim.

So I posted a link in an earlier thread about Politico suspending one of their only on-air Black WH reporter for saying

“Romney is very, very comfortable, it seems, with people who are like him,” Williams said on Martin Bashir’s MSNBC show. “That’s one of the reasons why he seems so stiff and awkward in some town hall settings, why he can’t relate to people other than that. But when he comes on Fox and Friends, they’re like him, they’re white folks who are very much relaxed in their own company.

    .
So the PTB at Politico suspended ole dude because Politico (and please try not to laugh at this) is

““POLITICO journalists have a clear and inflexible responsibility to cover politics fairly and free of partisan bias,”

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/06/politico-suspends-reporter-mitt-romney.php?ref=fpnewsfeed

So now there is some fire going around twitter that the reporter is either being dismissed or is no longer gonna be working for Politico and understandaby members of the NABJ (who have had issue with Politico over the lack of
diversity in their journalist) are pissed.

I’ve seen Mr Williams on MSNBC including on Hardball and I think he’s come off as very personable and knowledgeable about the subject and never comes off as “militant” or bias in anyway. Personally, I hope he leaves Politico and finds work a someplace better.

Politico is nothing to defend and i sure as hell not doing it here, but that dude could’ve made his point without the “White folks” this or that. There are some black folks in this catagory, too. Stick with the points, ditch the race crap.

            June 23, 2012 at 8:15 am

Morning Left-Indie! Not to worry, my statement was just an observation, not a defense. The only person I spend time ‘defending’ is PBO, and I used quotes for the word because I do not believe the president needs a defense from me. IMO he deserves our help getting his facts and his plans etc ‘out there’, and if sometimes that comes across as defending him I’m okay with that. The others can make and lie in their own beds, though I may remark on their choice of bedding here and there.

No, VCprez, wasn’t talking to your comment. My comments was aimed at this guy at politico, or anyone else on ourside that rattles off ignorantly about race. Ourside is supposed to be the uniters. This guy at politico, for example, made a good point (that willard is a core-less, soul-less person who’s only comfortable with other soul-less capitalist gangsters). Ok, good point. Then he adds “white folks”, and all of a sudden his message is muddle crap and all anybody talks about. I remember a commentor here on TOD who once wrote “…white folks are running for the hills…” or some such. Stupid statement in my opinion. It just kills all the valid points to be made. We’re the uniters.

I noticed a few days ago on the bus tour there was a photo of Romney talking with a group behind him with several that looked like preteen Black kids in the photo. It looked very staged to me as if “I can fix this problem everyone is talking about.” What really looked suspicious was there were no Black adults in the photo with the kids. The kids were spread out and many had the same logo t-shirt on. Could it have been more bussed in people to diversify the crowd and kill one of the arguments against Romney?

Thanks for sharing this df! I think we should be focusing on how corporations are in cahoots with the GOP to keep unemployment so high in order to deny President Obama a second term. Otherwise, how do they explain their record profits that are not accompanied with job creation? Obviously, the so called “job creators” are doing fine, but they are not creating jobs. Why is that the case? How come no reporters dare to ask Mitt Romney, the purveyor of doom and gloom, about the record corporate profits that are not accompanied by record job creation? Why are corporations hoarding the money and all their tax breaks when they argued that giving them all these tax breaks was a way to create jobs? I also think that the Democrats have been remiss in not raising this issue of corporate record profits that have not materialized into job creation.

    Williams issued a statement:

“I regret that this happened. I understand and respect John Harris’ point of view – that I’ve compromised Politico’s objectivity, and my own. At this point my suspension without pay is still indefinite, and I don’t know what management has in mind as an appropriate sanction, so I can’t object or appeal. Politico still employs me, but the review process hasn’t started in earnest so my future remains unclear.

Having covered the Shirley Sherrod firing and seen the fallout from James O’Keefe’s brand of journalism, I’m not surprised a small group with internet access and an ambitious agenda can affect reporting and distort analysis of political news. It’s quite unfortunate and incredibly frustrating, however, that I landed in the crosshairs this time, calling Politico’s integrity into question and jeopardizing a job and a career that I love.”

          June 22, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Chips, I don’t think it’s cause he wants to remain a “politico whore”. He’s probably just having to wrestle witht he fact that like a lot of AA when we have to leave a job or resign from a postion that just does not have alot of diversity to begin with, it’s hard to find a job as a BLACK journalist period. There are only so many urban media outlets out there, and they don’t have a whole bunch of opening for journos.

Where else can he go? If he wants to continue working in mainstream media, and let’s not forget that is where the real money is, then he a)needs to not burn bridges in the “white man’s world” (9X out of 10, media CEO, owners, higher managment are white) b)he needs to make sure there are actually jobs available for him.

Heck it’s hard enough getting a job in a general field, let alone a field predominated by non-minorities.

Now if it was me on my 9 to 5, then I’d just yell “deuces” to them muthas and be up out of there. But I can understand why it’s not so easy for Mr Williams.

          • June 22, 2012 at 7:58 pm

I know what you mean Lamh, and I know good media jobs are incredibly hard to come by, but, for me, that doesn’t excuse any one sacrificing their decency – if they ever had any – to work for a poisonous rag like Politico. For him to talk about “Politico’s objectivity” … sorry, just can’t take the fella seriously.

            • 82 lamh35
              June 22, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Well Chips, that’s not the experience of alot of AA. Don’t take this the wrong, way, but that’s the privelege of being an non-minority particurlarly since the majority of minoirity workers work for/under non-minority bosses.

Sorry to tell ya. I personally have had to stay in a position that I hate with people who just were some bigotted mofos until I had another job. Once I got that other job though, I was out.

If AA left every job before having another due to racist or bigotted bosses or co-workers, none of us would be working.

              • June 22, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Hiya Lamh, I may not be AA, but I’ve had lots of experience of discrimination through my life because of my roots, (now-ex) religion and where I grew up and was schooled, much of it as a child when I was repeatedly told that I and people like me were worthless pieces of shit – simply because of the nationality and religion we had been born in to. Seriously vicious, ugly stuff that left its mark – so no, the way I was born never afforded me any privilege at all, quite the opposite in fact. And thousands of people just like me were slaughtered in a civil war where I lived, and just as many of the ‘other’ side slaughtered by ‘my’ people. All because of blind, ignorant hate.

So, I know something about discrimination alright, trust me.

Would I, then, have worked for a media outlet that promoted hatred and contempt for ‘my’ people?

                No.

I’d rather sleep under the stars.

This was about Mr Williams and the fact that we disagree about his statement and the possible reasoning behind it. I gave you my reasons for why I felt the way I did you gave me your reasons why you felt that way. We disagree. Somehow this became about who experience of discrimination warrants the proper content by which to interpret Mr Williams statement. The conversation is no longer about Mr Williams. That is the conversation I dont’ want to get into. Nothing I said warranted your statement that “It’s like once you hear someone else has suffered discrimination you want to end the conversation. Why? Shouldn’t we be sympathetic to all victims of discrimination, regardless of class, color or creed?”

Unfortunately, nothing has really changed for Black folks. It’s difficult to explain to people what our reality is…even to people who may have suffered discrimination, etc. The truth is, there is no comparison and this is not to discount the suffering of others. What’s the saying…”unless you have walked in our shoes (lived in our skin) ain’t no way you can understand”.

Guys, please let’s be fair to Mr Williams here. I don’t think it’s cause he wants to remain a “politico whore”. He’s probably just having to wrestle with the fact that like a lot of AA when we have to leave a job or resign from a postion that just does not have alot of diversity to begin with, it’s hard to find a job. As a BLACK “Political” journalist it’s probably even harder. There are only so many urban media outlets out there, and they don’t have a whole bunch of opening for journos. And mainstream media outlet (even liberal ones like MSNBC) are not known for their incredible breath of diversity.

      • June 22, 2012 at 8:23 pm

I agree, food on the table will trump pride every time. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mr. Williams could just leave and be immediately picked up by another outlet. Take Ratigan for instance, do you think he’ll be unemployed for long? These guys can jump from one high profile job to another without missing a beat. They have a network and roledex that is there to pick them up and place them somewhere else on the checker board. Mr. Williams will be lucky if he gets to write for his local neighborhood daily. Give him a break. No one is sorrier than him for expressing how he really feels. He’s even sorrier that he forgot that he must always draw inside the lines.

I’m gonna end this conversation here cookemom, just wanted to say I agree with you

          • June 22, 2012 at 9:17 pm

It’s a difficult subject and even more difficult when discussing with our friends. There is discrimination everywhere and each group feels theirs is the most horrendous. However, in the case of AAs, especially men, the systematic, institutionalized discrimination that goes on in the AA community, does not occur in any other group. No soap box here, but privilege (it’s real and not meant as a negative, it just is) does cloud the reality that AAs face on the regular.

            • June 22, 2012 at 9:34 pm

“….in the case of AAs, especially men, the systematic, institutionalized discrimination that goes on in the AA community, does not occur in any other group”

But I’m talking worldwide, cookemom, that was my point. It’s not a contest, discrimination against any group of human beings, whatever their faith or color or nationality or gender, is disgusting. We should just acknowledge that, instead of trying to form a league table of suffering. Jews, African Americans, the Irish, Native Americans, Kurds, etc, etc, etc … unrelenting prejudice and brutality against them through the ages, in some cases to this day.

So enough of people saying ‘you don’t understand discrimination’, when they have no clue of any experience other than their own.

              • June 22, 2012 at 10:07 pm

I never said you don’t understand discrimination, but I still maintain that privilege clouds the reality that AAs face. Also, I was not addressing the worldwide cases of discrimination. It isn’t a contest, but tell that to the AAs who have been systematically and institutionally left off the field. It seems to me when AAs bring up discrimination, there is the comparison of other groups who’ve gone through discrimination as well.

Mr. Williams position at Politico is a great feat considering the statistics for AA males in America. So my post was only about this one Mr. Williams who felt compelled to give a public apology for saying how he really felt. He knows the Political gig is up, that apology is to hopefully ease the way for a journalism job elsewhere. He does not have the privilege that others in his profession have. Many of whom have made outrages statements, yet found themselves secure in their job (Mark Halprin). Heck, it took Rev Sharpton and much protesting to get that creep who talked about the girl’s basketball team off the air. Guess what? He landed a job soon after. Do you think the Mr. Williams of journalism will fare as well?

I just ask that before we call him a sell out, unlike Allen West, Clarence Thomas, Herman Cain, this person was stating a position he felt about Mitt. Actually, Mitt and his religious brethren didn’t even consider Mr. Williams worthy until the 70’s. So as I stated, this is hard among friends because the expectation of understanding is so high. I am an AA female and even though there are males all around me, I can’t begin to walk in their shoes or experience their pain as head of household, provider, and suffer the humility as Mr. Williams when making that statement. I also understand why an AA male would rather drop the subject, than continue through the kind of anger it brings when trying to enlighten others. Hopefully, we’ll agree to acknowledge each other’s view on the matter.

                • June 22, 2012 at 10:25 pm

                  Hi Cookemom,

It was Lamh who implied I didn’t understand discrimination, not you.

Yes, I look at this issue in global terms, I wish everyone would too, rather than being confined by borders. Discrimination everywhere, through history, has the same roots: ignorance, hate and the determination to preserve the power of the ruling elite.

I completely respect your view on the Politico reporter, mine is simply that I have no respect for anyone who works for that race-baiting rag.

                  • June 22, 2012 at 10:49 pm

some people work at jobs that belittle them and humiliate them in order to feed their family. You must be in a fortunate enough position to not have to face that horrible choice. It has nothing to do with your respect for people who find themselves in that position. It has to do with their own self-respect of knowing that they are doing everything in their power to provide and be a productive member of society. Kudos to you for being able to look at this from a global perspective cause I’m looking at if from my front window.

Chips, ban me if you feel the need to, but that is a lie no where did I imply that you did not understand discrimination. If you took it that way, then fine, but that is neither what I said nor was it my intent.

                    • June 23, 2012 at 4:22 pm

That’s how I interpreted your response to me Lamh – and when I explained that I too have had my moments of experiencing discrimination in my life you chose to end the conversation there. I found it all a bit strange.

I have no intention of banning you.

After two filibusters by Republicans, it seems that the Senate has finally come to an agreement on freezing student loan rates. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are apparently working out the final details on how they will cover the cost of the bill, which will prevent student loans from doubling this month.

I saw when it happened, and was pretty annoyed at first because I thought more people would have noticed. Also, I initially thought that he had tripped over a wire or something that was in the way, and was pretty annoyed, but when he mentioned it was the stairs that he tripped over, I calmed down.

But most people didn’t appear to see it, or care that it happened because they were so fired up.

Companies’ Ills Did Not Harm Romney’s Firm

By MICHAEL LUO and JULIE CRESWELL
    Published: June 22, 2012

    —————————————————-

Cambridge Industries, an automotive plastics supplier whose losses had been building for three consecutive years, finally filed for bankruptcy in May 2000 under a mountain of debt that had ballooned to more than $300 million.

Yet Bain Capital, the private equity firm that controlled the Michigan-based company, continued to religiously collect its $950,000-a-year “advisory fee” in quarterly installments, even to the very end, according to court documents.

In all, Bain garnered more than $10 million in fees from Cambridge over five years, including a $2.25 million payment just for buying the company, according to bankruptcy records and filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Meanwhile, Bain’s investors saw their $16 million investment in Cambridge wiped out.

That Bain was able to reap revenue from Cambridge, even as it foundered, was hardly unusual.

24 Fees Mitt Romney Tried To Raise In Massachusetts

    By Andrew Kaczynski

Mitt Romney often hits President Obama for calling for tax increases on the wealthiest Americans. But a Democratic source forwards to this rather lengthy list of fees Romney raised in Massachusetts. He was struggling to close a budget gap without raising taxes; but many of which citizens of the state saw them hidden tax increases nonetheless.

    It was funny at first.

The young men in business suits, gingerly picking their way among the millwrights, machinists and pipefitters at Kansas City’s Worldwide Grinding Systems steel mill. Gaping up at the cranes that swung 10-foot cast iron buckets through the air. Jumping at the thunder from the melt shop’s electric-arc furnace as it turned scrap metal into lava.

“They looked like a bunch of high school kids to me. A bunch of Wall Street preppies,” says Jim Linson, an electronics repairman who worked at the plant for 40 years. “They came in, they were in awe.”

    snip/

Less than a decade later, the mill was padlocked and some 750 people lost their jobs. Workers were denied the severance pay and health insurance they’d been promised, and their pension benefits were cut by as much as $400 a month.

What’s more, a federal government insurance agency had to pony up $44 million to bail out the company’s underfunded pension plan. Nevertheless, Bain profited on the deal, receiving $12 million on its $8 million initial investment and at least $4.5 million in consulting fees.

Just a reminder…that federal govt insurance…is taxpayer money.

I want all who pray to pray hard for us this week-end. Pray that we will prepare ourselves for the Supreme Court decision. If it doesn’t go our way, despite the media and the GOP , we must keep our eyes on the big picture, November 6th. Re-electing President Obama. Goodnight all.

I would love for someone to investigate what Tom Corbett actually knew about Sandusky, and when he knew it?
Corbett cannot be discounted as someone complicit in allowing Sandusky to harm children far longer than he ever should have.

This from an April 2012 article in ESPN:
    ____________________________________________________________

A 62-year-old Republican, Corbett is a blunt-spoken former prosecutor whose political career has been built pursuing powerful people who, he has said, “believe they are beyond the law.” And his role in the Penn State scandal, fraught with potential conflicts, placed him in a remarkable position. As Pennsylvania’s attorney general, he investigated Sandusky for nearly two years but failed to make an arrest. But then, as governor, he blamed the university’s leaders for not doing more. One was Paterno, who some board members believed wielded too much power. The other was university president Graham B. Spanier, a 16-year veteran and Corbett rival who had become a vocal opponent of the governor’s efforts to slash higher education funding.

To some, Corbett relished the opportunity and had even planned to play a role in managing the crisis. Eight days before the Sandusky grand jury presentment was released this past November, Corbett’s staff booked hotel rooms in State College. Becoming governor had made Corbett a trustee, and he had decided to attend his first board meeting, after missing the first four. During those days of crisis in State College, he lobbied for the ouster of Paterno and Spanier, ending with that conference call on Nov. 9. And when he was on campus the next day, after Spanier’s resignation and Paterno’s firing, he celebrated the leadership changes. “Throughout this whole process, I felt he had some ulterior motive,” a trustee says of Corbett. “Most trustees felt uncomfortable with his role. It was odd for him to be there and participate the way he did. Very odd.”

Corbett declined repeated interview requests for this story. But on Wednesday his spokesman, Kevin Harley, issued a statement to PennLive.com: “ESPN’s report from the grassy knoll merely adds another chapter to the growing list of conspiracy theories surrounding the Sandusky case. It is a disappointment to read something so long, filled with so many errors, that offers so little by way of new or even real fact. The fact remains that Jerry Sandusky is charged with serious crimes of sexually abusing children and that the evidence against him is overwhelming.” Harley had previously referred “Outside the Lines” and ESPN The Magazine to several recent local TV interviews in which Corbett explained what he described as the minor role he played in the trustees’ deliberations regarding Paterno and Spanier.

“This was their discussion,” Corbett said in a Feb. 8 interview with WJAC-TV. “The only thing I said is that they have to remember the children. People may have different memories, but I remember exactly what I said.”

“That is a bald-faced lie,” one trustee says.

General Motors announced plans Friday to add a third shift at its SUV plant in Arlington, Texas, as the company continues to ramp up production after deep cuts during the financial crisis.
The additional shift will keep the facility running around the clock, and will generate roughly 800 additional jobs, GM (GM, Fortune 500) said.

    Thank you, President Obama!

‘the blaze was started when a bullet hit a rock. this is the 20th target shooting-related fire in utah this year.’

so, maybe somebody could ask the rethugs: do these target shooters, maybe need regulation? and in a related question, have the people really spoken and said, we just have too many firefighters?

“By attacking the democratically elected President of the United States of America at a sensitive time in her country’s history, she shows the tact of a boorish drunkard bawling obscenities at a funeral….

And now she turns not only against the fibre and backbone of her country, but against its democratically elected President, accusing him of being incompetent for not stopping Wikileaks. Where was she and where was her GOP before and during the 9/11 attacks? She accuses President Obama of not taking “steps” to assure the leaks were not published. What “steps”?……

If anything is a threat to the national security of the United States of America, it is this screaming, unrefined oaf with as much class as a searing release of flatulence followed by hysterical giggling at a state banquet. Is this what the people of the USA deserve?

To attack the President of the country at a time when the USA needs to close ranks and stand together to consolidate the enormous strides his (President Obama’s) intelligent and respectful approach has achieved in building bridges, when her party’s period in government bombed them, Spankin’ Sarah Palin comes across as a pitifully inadequate anachronism from the times of the Far West.”

    Charles Pierce via BJ

Here’s your disclaimer: Joe Williams is a friend of mine. He is also one of the best political reporters I know and, when he landed at Politico, I thought, well, at least there will be one person there who isn’t completely dedicated to the notion that American politics should be covered the way it would be in The Daily Racing Form, if The Daily Racing Form were a slam book kept by a not-very-bright seventh grader.

Turns out that said seventh-grader also is, in words that the Supreme Court just on Thursday gave me permission to use “fleetingly” on television, a chickenshit motherfucker.

Joe said some unkind things about Willard Romney and white people. Joe retweeted a joke about Ann Romney’s maladroit quote about “unzipping” her husband. A ludicrous Tinker Toy news outlet stamped its tiny feet, and then the assembled mourners over at Andrew Breitbart’s Mausoleum Of Unemployables got themselves outraged, and Politico folded like a cheap suit. This should be a caution to any real reporters who work there now, or who may be thinking about working there in the future. Your bosses can be frightened away by a preposterous political grocery flyer, and by a website run by a cargo cult that worships a deceased angry drunk. They do not have your back.

I think if Williams had let it go at right wing base or something similar he would probably still be working there. Whether true or not pointing out the fact Romney was only comfortable around white people was bound to get him in hot water. I’m no fan of Politico (GOP) but Williams put them on the spot where they felt like they had to do something. If a white reporter had said Obama is only comfortable around black people (ridiculous considering the diversity of his crowds) then there would understandably been a hue and cry for their scalp.

        June 23, 2012 at 7:56 am

After all the things the white media have been calling Obama with all the dog whistles, what williams said is peanuts. And he said the truth about mittbot by the way.

        • June 23, 2012 at 8:04 am

Politico is not probably not going to measure their internal decision based on what other white media outlets have said. It may be peanuts but obviously not to them. Williams may have been correct but there’s a way to be correct without jeopardizing your job. He walked right up to the water’s edge dipped his toe in it then dove in head first. I’m glad they didn’t fire him. Suspended in the media means take some time off with pay.

          • June 23, 2012 at 8:10 am

Correction on the suspended with pay part. He’s not getting any money.

Yeah, they just folded just because a bunch of fringey white folks went all poutraged. The jeopordization of the job came from the cowardliness of the gopolitico, not from the truth telling from williams. He too folded later is another matter of economic terrorism.

            • June 23, 2012 at 9:49 am

No it came from what he said and how he said it. Politico could ignore it but there was no way they could back him on it.

                June 23, 2012 at 9:55 am

Nope. If that was the standard, many in gopolitico wouldn’t have a job for all the crap they spew. And why didn’t they ignore it ? Because some rw whakcos got on their case.

And mittbot is a still an asshole who can’t connect with common people.

                End of discussion.

White reporters said in a ? mark, was Obama Black enough in 2007/2008 and they say pres Obama is arrogant, eats Arugula, is not emoting and doesn’t like people……meaning white people. They also said that then senator Obama was throwing his white grandma under the bus with the race speech in PA in 2008. The were calling Michelle Obama Militant and the Cover of the New Yorker in Oct 2009 or so what was that about and which white Journo got suspended? What about the NY Post and the police shooting a Chimpanzee…..in their racist cartoon….was to have been the pres in 2009, was any white Journo suspended or fired?

The bottom line is, there is a blatant double standard. The question is why?
