THIS POST IS RIPE FOR A DNC AD ON TAX POLICY

We have “SENATOR” Lindsey Graham saying we should not criticize Mitt Romeny because he has offshore bank accounts. (I wonder what he would say if it was Senator Barack Obama with offshore bank accounts.) After all, it’s really American to avoid paying taxes legally. I have to believe that Senator Graham is violating some code of ethics for a member of congress. His flippant comments are outrageous. Couple that with Grover Norquist who is holding the GOP congress hostage with no tax pledges which are rendering our government dysfunctional. Graham and Norquist epitomize what is wrong with tax policy.

Republican Senator On Romney: ‘It’s Really American To Avoid Paying Taxes’

    ——————————————

But Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) attempt to defuse the controversy surrounding Romney’s taxes may be a new low for the campaign:

Mitt Romney shouldn’t be criticized for using off-shore tax havens because “it’s really American to avoid paying taxes, legally,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Tuesday. [...]

Graham argued that Congress is responsible for tax avoidance because it has crafted such convoluted rules and said he was fine with Romney’s taking advantage of the loopholes.

“As long as it was legal, I’m OK with it,” Graham said. “I don’t blame anybody for using the tax code to their advantage. I blame us for having it so complicated and confused. Pick a rate and make people pay it.”

I guess then only the ultra wealthy are really able to be really American to avoid paying taxes. My goodness…how much money does this man have that he looks for loop holes (aren’t loop holes a way of getting around a law?)
      ” loophole
      noun
a loophole in the regulations: means of evasion”

      July 10, 2012 at 9:40 pm

Amazing! I think members of Congress like Senator Graham do not deserve to be paid full salaries. They contribute nothing to the well being of the Country.

      • 19 vcprezofan2
        July 10, 2012 at 9:51 pm

Now you are hitting a sore spot for me, Nath. It really bothers me that these guys are paid such a handsome salary whether they work or not, and the fact that they don’t have to sneak while not working bugs me deeply. Not only are they not contributing, they have plotted to derail the government! It makes no sense to me that there is no way to hold them accountable other than in the next election. So a politician could be elected, state that s/he won’t work because s/he is against someone else’s plans, actually not work, AND collect salary anyways! Unacceptable, IMO, yet I can’t see anything provisions made to put a stop to this kind of behaviour.

        • 20 nathkatun7
          July 10, 2012 at 10:33 pm

I am totally with you VC! I am just furious! These people are a disgrace! Here they are being paid by our tax dollars and all they do is sit on their behinds and just show up, now and then, to vote NO to all of President Obama’s proposals aimed at helping ordinary people. And now this Senator guy from South Carolina tells me that it’s o.k. for a super rich man, running to be President of the United States, to use every loophole in the book to avoid paying taxes. Is Senator Graham (who is nothing but John McCain’s lapdog when it comes to wanting to start wars all over the Middle East) telling the American people that it’s patriotic to avoid paying taxes?

Just to think that these are the same people who go around attacking teachers demanding salary cuts and advocating the so called “merit pay” for teachers. I think we the citizens should start demanding that salaries for members of Congress, and all their benefits, should be based on their productivity. If productivity were the basis of Congressional salaries then the salaries of the Republican dominated 112th Congress would be severely reduced. This Congress has been one of the least productive in history. Whenever they are not out there doing nothing but bad mouthing the President, they show up to vote for symbolic legislation that does absolutely nothing to improve the lives of the vast majorities of Americans. So, you see, vcprezofan2, you are not alone in being bothered by the money wasted on these do-nothing members of Congress.

and what really pisses me off is that they get great health care while denying it to others!

        • July 11, 2012 at 2:06 am

this is far worse than the faux stigma they put on welfare recipients or food stamps….this is blatant misuse of a system supporting the wrong behaviour for those who see politics as a personal job perk, instead of advancing the betterment of citizens they are supposed to represent

          • 23 vcprezofan2
            July 11, 2012 at 9:06 am

The kicker for me, Betsy, Berny & Nath, is that there is nothing citizens can do about it, or so it seems. Therefore selfish politicians can grin and spit at our feet while behaving in this unconscionable manner!

    • 24 anniebella
      July 11, 2012 at 4:23 am

I heard what Senator Graham said. But here’s the problem in what he said, if it was President Obama hiding money all over the world and refusing to release his taxes, Graham would be saying a whole different thing. It just shows you what the Republican Party have become, there is no one will any principals and who is willing to stand up for them even against their party. It is ashame to see what Lindsey Graham have become.

That would be a very good question…..I’d like to see him dance around that one. Women only count in the Mormon church if they’re attached to a Mormon man. They are totally patriarchal.

    • 28 nathkatun7

Good question, magapie. If I am not mistaken, Willard “Mitt” Romney is a Bishop in the Mormon Church. So, he is in a high position of leadership in the Church to be able to answer that question. But you know, Magapie, given the current state of U.S. corporate media I highly doubt that any reporter will be courageous enough to ask that question.

      • July 10, 2012 at 10:41 pm

Me too. The first one opens here August 10. YEA!!!! I will no longer have to make a TJ’s ‘run’ when I go to my daughter’s or when I am in Fairfax. I am SO excited! No wine here though–not allowed in grocery stores in TN. Ridiculous, huh??

        • 79 nathkatun7
          July 10, 2012 at 11:31 pm

tnmtngirl, I am sorry you can’t buy wine at TJ’s because they have the best prices. I though you were all “freedom loving” people in TN? How can any one really enjoy “freedom” and “liberty” without a nice glass of red wine? Didn’t Jesus serve his disciples wine (I am sure it was red wine because only red wine resembles blood) at the “Last Supper?” How can people who claim to believe in the literal interpretation of the Holy Bible, as the word of God, be against wine?

          • 80 HZ
            July 11, 2012 at 1:34 am

Tnmtngirl, do you have a ‘Total Wine’ there? They have some wonderful wines high end and low end. You can go online and pick up the next day or have it shipped to you. Great place to find some great wines for all purposes. I get my reds there for my heart. Found some great one. Check it out.

Trader Joe’s and Sprouts are my stores for my special diet. Have been shopping at Traders for some twenty plus years or so now in Cali. Whole Foods for my teas and fresh fish. Great places.

Nathkatun7, I hear you. Plus, wine was a staple during that time. It was really made from a paste. That is one reason that it was broken down with water. HZ

            • July 11, 2012 at 6:50 am

Hey you two, gm. Don’t know if either will see this. We have a number of privately owned wine/beverage stores. They have a big lobby against allowing wine to be sold in grocery stores. When I do a TJ’s “run” (in VA) I almost always get a few bottles so i keep a good supply. :)

    BAM! http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/10/us/veterans-rail-industry/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Washington (CNN) — Facing an aging rail industry workforce and an influx of returning military veterans, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday an initiative in which the growing rail sector will hire more than 5,000 veterans this year, matching the same number hired in 2011.
“Our veterans have skills and real life experiences that we need to help rebuild America,” said DOT Secretary Ray LaHood during a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.
LaHood said veterans are valuable potential employees because of their prior training in the military. He pointed out military personnel have leadership and teamwork training and experience working with heavy machinery in demanding work conditions.

These people need to go back to school. It’s o.k. to disagree with Supreme Court’s decisions. Nevertheless, the majority of the Justices on the Supreme Court are the final arbiter of what is Constitutional. Basically, there are only two ways to change that.First, Congress has to pass a Constitutional Amendment by 2/3 majorities; and the Amendment has to be ratified by 3/4th of states for it become part of the Constitution thereby that superseding the Court’s ruling. Second, opponents of ACA have to elect a President and the majority on the United States Senate, and then place more judges on the bench that will rule to reverse the current Supreme Court ruling. For now, the Supreme Court has spoken: OBAMA CARES is constitutional. Period.

“Michelle almost had 3k People come see Her, in Miami Lakes Florida

      Any questions?”

Yes, Jovie, I have several questions! First, is it true that the (3k) number of people you cited who came to se FL Michelle Obama plainly support the MSM assertions that the people, and especially AA and women in general, have lost their enthusiasm for President Obama? If I am not mistaken, I heard that Mrs. Anne Romney, the wife of the presidential Republican nominee, drew 10 times more people (30k) in her recent appearance in Florida than those who came to see FL, Michelle Obama. Is this true, Jovie? Or is it inflated propaganda? My last question: Is it true, as my Republican friends are contending, that President Obama has zero chance of winning Florida?

So Queen Ann is not such a game changer as the MSM media predicted? I was obviously trying to be snarky because I don’t think any of the Romneys, Ann, Mitt, or the five golden boys, have attracted anywhere near 30K people to any of their events.

GOP Looks to Score Points as Americans Look for Jobs

Posted on July 9, 2012 by Leader’s Press Shop

    —————————–

Americans are looking for jobs, and Republicans are looking to score cheap political points with message bills to nowhere. The American people deserve better.

Instead of working with Democrats to create jobs and strengthen the middle class, House Republicans are looking towards Election Day with tunnel vision and coordinating with former Governor Mitt Romney to repeal patients’ rights and give more tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.

Who is the House GOP listening to, Speaker Boehner?

Posted on July 10, 2012 by Leader’s Press Shop

    ——————————-

Speaker Boehner just told a gaggle of reporters that, from the beginning, the 112th Congress “wasn’t going to be about them [Republicans]” but it has been about listening to the American people.

Who is he trying to kid?

The American people and small businesses are asking the GOP ‘where are the jobs?’ Instead of jobs bills, this week, for the 31st time, the GOP will vote to take away patient protections for Americans – the same protections enjoyed by Members of Congress.

The House Democratic Leader’s press office released this new video, “GOP Wasting Time on A Message Vote to Nowhere,” using Speaker Boehner’s own “Where are the Jobs?” to highlight the GOP’s continued pursuit of a political agenda, voting to repeal patients’ rights, instead of focusing on jobs:

DF, I have come to the conclusion that sometimes it’s not worthy it to spend time and energy arguing with fools who are “true believers.” Many of these people never take time to research the truth. Instead they repeat everything they hear from their leaders on the blogs, radio, and television. It’s so exhausting trying to argue with people who are armed with talking points and are not interested at looking at the facts. Besides, many of the critics of President Obama seem to live in the moment. Remember how Speaker Boehner boasted about getting 98% in the debt ceiling negotiations? Now who is crying and wants to re- negotiate the deal Congress struck with the President.? If you can, df, ask you friend to visit the Smartypants blog. She is one of the most astute analyst who gets President Obama.

Any one who thinks President Obama is weak doesn’t know what he/she is talking about. This is the President who went to the Congressional Republican caucus and put it’s members to shame. No wonder they never invited him back. This is the President who stood firm for the passage of Health Care Reform, despite the urging of seasoned political hands who thought that it would cost him his re-election. This is also the President who staked his entire presidency on getting Bin Laden. I don’t how old the person you were arguing with is; but I’ve consciously lived under ten Presidents, and as far as I am concerned, President Obama is one of the strongest and more politically courageous president I’ve lived under. He is also the only president who has faced a relentless, irrational, and hateful opposition party, despite his magnanimous efforts of trying to work with it. He is also one of the Presidents who has faced the most unethical, hostile, and incompetent media. The U.S. media has degenerated into tabloidism and sensationalism. In addition, quite a few reporters act like the spokespersons of the Republican party. It’s no wonder that the vast majority of Americans, including people in my senior citizen age group, are completely ignorant of all the accomplishments of President Obama that are right now benefiting them.

I have been gone from the blog since early morning as I had extensive dental work done today. Ochhh! When coming online the Yahoo news showed a title saying some Dems will be voting to kill ACA due to elections coming up. Say what! Hope these chickens don’t give the other side impetus that will bring down the ACA. I know PBO can veto but it could then be overridden. Any way we can influence the likely Dems? They so annoy me. I know, I know the argument is that is the only way they can win and if they don’t we will have a GOP in there instead. Since the ACA is becoming more popular why couldn’t they just explain the ACA and win their electorates over? I guess it is not that easy, but I will pray we keep the ACA. Also we can get PBO back and if I can try to be really hopeful I will wish to hold the Senate and gain the House.

    • July 11, 2012 at 7:52 am

I hate when the MSM focuses on obscure Conservadems in the House just to make it look as if PBO’s entire party is against him. The bottom line is that the bill will die in the senate because the majority – if not all – of the senate DEMS will vote against repeal. The media is not focusing on THAT part, which is the most important part.

Off-topic: Baseball Card Fan’s Holy Grail! Check your attics, folks :-)
    ————————–
    Hidden baseball cards worth millions?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/baseball-cards-in-ohio-attic-might-fetch-millions-071012?gt1=39002

Karl Kissner picked up a soot-covered cardboard box that had been under a wooden dollhouse in his grandfather’s attic. Taking a look inside, he saw hundreds of baseball cards bundled with twine. They were smaller than the ones he was used to seeing. But some of the names were familiar: Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Honus Wagner. Then he put the box on a dresser and went back to digging through the attic.

It wasn’t until two weeks later that he learned that his family had come across what experts say is one of the biggest, most exciting finds in the history of sports card collecting, a discovery worth perhaps millions. The cards are from an extremely rare series issued around 1910. Up to now, the few known to exist were in so-so condition at best, with faded images and worn edges. But the ones from the attic in the town of Defiance are nearly pristine, untouched for more than a century. The colors are vibrant, the borders crisp and white.

”It’s like finding the Mona Lisa in the attic,” Kissner said. Sports card experts who authenticated the find say they may never again see something this impressive. ”Every future find will ultimately be compared to this,” said Joe Orlando, president of Professional Sports Authenticator.

The best of the bunch – 37 cards – are expected to bring a total of $500,000 when they are sold at auction in August during the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore. There are about 700 cards in all that could be worth up to $3 million, experts say. They include such legends as Christy Mathewson and Connie Mack.

Kissner and his family say the cards belonged to their grandfather, Carl Hench, who died in the 1940s. Hench ran a meat market in Defiance, and the family suspects he got them as a promotional item from a candy company that distributed them with caramels. They think he gave some away and kept others.

”We guess he stuck them in the attic and forgot about them,” Kissner said. ”They remained there frozen in time.”

Easy: he’s going to say to black people that their life sucks, he’s going to say that their unemployment numbers are worse than for other groups. He’ll say that Barack Obama hasn’t done anything for them and that all their problems are his fault. OH, and that he, Mitt Romney, has the solution because he’s SO good at creating jobs. He’ll probably talk about God too.

Romney going to NAACP Convention raises eyebrows so it will be considered news, and we’ll see every pundit on planet DC rate the speech positively and say that “Barack Obama may have a problem with black voters”. And they’ll give a lot of air time to prominent black people who hate the President and will repeat ad nauseam that he isn’t good for the black community.

But it will be just noise. It won’t change anything. Black people are not easily fooled.

I wonder if Romney will talk about voter ID and the right to vote… What do you think ?

Indeed amk! Republicans, more so than Democrats, always come home. This is what’s missing on our side. The same “holier than thou progressives,” who gave us George Bush the Younger, are already out there preaching the gospel of Ron Paul and contending that there is no difference between President Obama and Mitt Romney. Blue dog Democrats are out there trying to out do the tea baggers. It’s plainly obvious that many of the hard core rightists don’t like or trust Mitt Romney. They, however, hate President Obama so much that they are already willing to put aside their temporary differences with Romney in order to ensure the defeat of the President. Sadly, this is not the case with the hard core leftists. Many hardcore leftists say they are 100% against Republicans. Yet they also hate President Obama because, so far as they are concerned, he has not delivered 100% of their agenda. Consequently, many are not willing to support his re-election. I hope leftists will change their minds. Given the structure and nature of the American political system, It’s not easy to implement revolutionary changes. This what JFK realized when talked about the limits of Presidential power. At the same time, the President still exercises enormous powers. It would be a shame if the purity progressives helped electing extreme rights who would everything to turn the clock backwards to the pre-New Deal era.

I don’t get the hard left’s infatuation with Ron Paul. The man would do even more damage to the federal government than Romney if he had the chance. Paul’s ideas would lead to the corporations grabbing even more power, and in general would lead to even more poverty and suffering. Paul’s vision is a delusional intellectual construct which doesn’t take into account human nature. Moreover, Paul seems oblivious to the lessons of History.

    Great Job Priorities.
    ————————————————————————————————————————-
Voters in five 2012 swing states have moved noticeably away from Mitt Romney since the Obama super PAC began attacking his business background on the air, according to polling conducted for the group Priorities USA Action.

In a memo out this morning, Democratic pollsters Geoff Garin of Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group and Jefrey Pollock and Nick Gourevitch of Global Strategy Group outline their findings and conclude that Romney has taken a meaningful hit as a result of Bain-themed negative ads.

“Mitt Romney’s business experience – the centerpiece of his case for the presidency – has proven to be much more of a liability than an asset in key swing states,” the pollsters write. “Clear negative trends have emerged in recent polling conducted in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.”

The Democrats’ survey tested 3,800 likely voters in those five states, in the period from June 25 to July 3. The top line findings: by a 10-point margin – 37 percent to 27 percent – voters now say that Romney’s background at Bain Capital makes them less likely to vote for him.

According to the poll, 58 percent of voters now agree with the statement that Romney’s priority in the private sector was “making millions for himself and his investors, regardless of the impact on jobs and the employees.”

Overall, Obama leads Romney in the five swing states by 6 points, 48 percent to 42 percent. Romney’s favorability rating in those battlegrounds is 7 points underwater: 36 percent of voters have a positive view of him, versus 43 percent who have an unfavorable view.

Romney looks damaged in the swing states, across the board, but the pollsters write that his problems are a bit more pronounced in the 11 media markets where Priorities has focused its advertising. The group has spent $10 million so far on dark, negative ads casting Romney as a cold-hearted businessman who fired workers and walked away with millions.

    U Mad Bro?
    ————————————————————————————————————————————–
Mitt Romney has had enough. Fed up with President Obama’s attacks on his business record, he is — or at least his surrogates are — going to drop the Mr. Nice Guy act and start calling his opponent a liar, BuzzFeed’s McKay Coppins reports. Romney’s campaign had already gone there — an e-mail on Saturday from spokeswoman Andrea Saul was headlined “Obama’s Desperate Lies,” for example — but to turn the L-word, usually avoided in politics, into a surrogate talking point represents a new front.

To the many Republicans thirsty for blood and concerned that Romney’s campaign has been too passive, this will surely be welcome news. But it’s rather ironic that Team Romney appears to have been baited into an emotional reaction after months of trying, unsuccessfully, to bait the Obama campaign.

This is the same Romney campaign that sent bubble-blowing hecklers to David Axelrod’s press conference in Boston, deployed its campaign bus to circle and honk outside Obama events, and had a staffer confront Joe Biden personally at a restaurant in Ohio. In another move that seemed designed to get in Obama’s face, Romney himself staged a press conference in front of the failed solar-energy company Solyndra.

But the Obama campaign’s response to this, aside from a bit of huffiness about Romney’s failure to condemn such tactics, has largely been “meh.” Meanwhile, the president continues to conduct a gleefully negative campaign, complete with misleading attack ads and disingenuous character slams

My response to the Mitt Romney campaign calling President Obama a liar is that the OFA “Truth Team” was created specifically to debunk Mitt Romney’s lies. They can’t be serious. If they want to go down this road, by all means, let’s go. In addition, Steve Benen has been chronicling Mitt Romney’s lies each Friday for months. He has enough material for a book deal.

      Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity, Vol. XXIV

By Steve Benen (June 29, 2012)

      —————————————-

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that came out this week included an interesting, open-ended question: “What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Mitt Romney as president?” Poll respondents weren’t offered any choices; they could offer any response they wanted.

The results weren’t especially surprising — the most common answer noted Romney being very wealthy. There were also plenty of folks who mentioned Romney’s conservatism, his Mormon faith, his controversial positions on women’s rights, etc.

Down towards the bottom of the list, however, was one that jumped out me: “Dishonest.” For at least some respondents — not a lot, but some — the first thing that came to mind when thinking about Romney was the candidate’s willingness to say things that aren’t true.

It’s good to know I’m not the only one who’s noticed. In fact, the public response should probably be far more common given how quickly the Republican’s record of falsehoods is growing. Consider, for example, the 24th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt’s mendacity.
