Rise and Shine

****

NYT Editorial: Taxes are supposed to be complicated and contentious. Yet, speaking from the White House on Monday, it took President Obama less than 15 minutes to make a strong and sensible case for letting the high-end Bush-era tax cuts expire at the end of 2012. Citing well-documented facts, he pointed out that tax cuts at the top have failed to promote economic growth and have blown a hole in the federal budget.

Under his plan, Americans who make more than $250,000 a year — the top 2 percent of taxpayers — would see their tax rates go back up next year to the levels from the Clinton years, while those making less than $250,000 — the remaining 98 percent — would have their tax cuts extended through 2013.

…. Unfortunately, it is not a message Congressional Republicans want to hear, committed as they are to preserving tax cuts for the rich at all costs…..

…. The strength of Mr. Obama’s argument is unlikely to sway Republicans. But he’s right on fairness and the facts, and will, we hope, prevail in this debate.

Paul Krugman: Classy.

Beyond parody, I give you the Romney fundraiser at David Koch’s house in the Hamptons:

A New York City donor a few cars back, who also would not give her name, said Romney needed to do a better job connecting. “I don’t think the common person is getting it,” she said from the passenger seat of a Range Rover stamped with East Hampton beach permits. “Nobody understands why Obama is hurting them.

“We’ve got the message,” she added. “But my college kid, the baby sitters, the nails ladies — everybody who’s got the right to vote — they don’t understand what’s going on. I just think if you’re lower income — one, you’re not as educated, two, they don’t understand how it works, they don’t understand how the systems work, they don’t understand the impact.”

Greg Sargent: Support for health law rising: One other key Post finding: In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling, voters are exactly split on whether they support the Affordable Care Act, 47-47. That’s a sizable swing from April, when Americans approved of it 39-53.

****

Eugene Robinson: Spare us any more hooey about “preventing fraud” and “protecting the integrity of the ballot box.” The Republican-led crusade for voter ID laws has been revealed as a cynical ploy to disenfranchise as many likely Democratic voters as possible, with poor people and minorities the main targets.

Recent developments in Pennsylvania — one of more than a dozen states where voting rights are under siege — should be enough to erase any lingering doubt: The GOP is trying to pull off an unconscionable crime.

Pamela, after her period of chilling out, we are going to have to talk Chips into giving 1st to 3rd place prizes. In fact, given the way those three positions get spread out by other comments, it would be a great way to spread pictures of our favourite peoples in different locations in the thread. [This suggestion is not at all self-serving. It comes from a feeling of empathy towards those TODobots who hurry in to home plate only to be nudged aside in the last minute/second and out of the goodness of my heart, realizing that we'll need every little bit of upliftment in the less-than-four months left. Yeah right, VC! ]

Nudged aside! That’s mild: LOL is now 9th, with 3rd place crimping in at 11th now, but that’s all the fun of being First isn’t it, no one can bump your spot! My my, no wonder our Chips needs a wee bit of a break, we have become rather somewhat a demanding mob! She loves us though….

‘no wonder our Chips needs a wee bit of a break’ – Yes! Yes!

‘we have become rather somewhat a demanding mob!’

/piously/ Pas moi! I only make suggestions. Suggestions that are (generally) not at all self-serving. Suggestions that will add to the happiness of the members of the village, and if we are happy, Mayoress Chips will be too. So you see, it’s all for the good of the community! [Wish there was a smilie of an angel.]

BTW, using your point above, if my suggestion was already in place we’d now have a favourite person pic at position #9 & # 11. In the coming months we’ll need those strategically placed jolts to help us along the path to Nov. 6th. ;)

I’m starting to lean towards the belief that the timing of things is near ‘perfect’. Sure the MSM has been doing a lousy job and I’m not excusing them, yet having the discussion building now when the campaign is building steam and more people are starting to gradually admit that the election is approaching has its merits IMO. The first one I see is that the outrage that is building won’t really have enough time to dissipate thoroughly by November. The second is that though we may be rolling our eyes and saying ‘about time’, the general public won’t have enough time to be jaded ‘Yeah! Yeah! Politics as usual! We’ve heard it all already. Tell us something new.’ So, in short, after railing about the MSM being overpaid incompetents for months, I’m now willing to put that behind me and find something advantageous in the timing we now have.

I saw an interesting segment on LOD last night….

They were talking about the Republicans and the Norquist pledge……

Apparently the only way the GOP can get around the pledge is if all the tax cuts expire and all rates on everyone go up….then in January….they will be able to sell any new tax legislation as a tax cut and not violate their Master Grover.

And just a thought as a small business owner and the 250k amount…..I am sure everyone knows that taxes are paid on Net Profits….any small business owner having that kind of profit after expenses is most likely taking in millions….so they can cry me a river.

      July 10, 2012 at 8:48 am

Your point is so important but something that is never mentioned. Maybe it is thought it is to difficult for the “common” people to understand. Hiring an employee is an expense that is written off. If the efforts of that employee adds to profits the company owner has a greater profit not less. It all comes back to demand. If sales are up employment will increase.

Too bad the part of big corporations dividing themselves into so called small businesses to take advantage of the tax laws cannot be brought up. Some of those company names might sway voters and count towards that 3 %.

The question that the Obama campaign is asking is, “Do you have an offshore bank account?”

The answer is . . . drum roll please.

Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd.

Yes, Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd.. Sort of a mouthful, isn’t it. But the name Sankaty (for short) symbolizes Mitt Romney’s hiding of assets offshore in Bermuda. The Obama campaign produced a video starring Press Secretary Ben LaBolt. The video asks the question, “Do you have an offshore bank account?”

That name Sankaty is causing Mitt Romney and his political campaign plenty of headaches these days, not just this video askign the tough questions. Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd. is the name of the account held first by Mitt Romney offshore in Bermuda, presumably to hide money from the public.

The account, which reported $1.9 million in earnings alone, was transferred to his wife Ann’s name one day before Mitt Romney was sworn in as the Massachusetts governor in 2003. This news according to Bermuda records obtained by The Associated Press.

Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd. raises more questions than it answers and could turn out to be a major problem for Mitt Romney. The perception that Mitt Romney has something to hide because he has bank accounts off shore and overseas already raises the “I’ve got something to hide” questions.

“The account, which reported $1.9 million in earnings alone, was transferred to his wife Ann’s name one day before Mitt Romney was sworn in as the Massachusetts governor in 2003.”

Ah, I *knew* I had seen this one before:

Obviously, the person who wrote the above though it was a nice joke.

      BWHAHAHAHAHA.

        • 37 Pamela
          July 10, 2012 at 9:16 am

The only one I have found, after trying many, is by KAL. I find it at the Super Supplements. It is not cut with any other additives, which sometimes leave a very weird aftertaste… Don’t like aftertaste…. I buy the 3.5 oz size – better price that way, then put small amounts into a daily use jar with a tight lid, leaving the larger bottle closed as much as possible. That lasts me nearly a year, and keeps the main jar from going stale. Leave the inner seal closed as much as possible. Put the lid back on very tightly.

            July 10, 2012 at 9:25 am

I gave up on stevia because of the aftertaste. I’ll look for this product.

              July 10, 2012 at 10:17 am

I know for sure what you mean 57! Originally, stevia was found in a liquid form, very expensive and available only through those network marketing type distributors. Then there came a demand for it, all kinds of brands appeared, some simply dreadful, inedible! But once I had the stevia inclination, I could not go back to any form of sugar, as I don’t eat much in the way of sweets. So, having found this one, I get the larger size, in case they stop making it!

              July 10, 2012 at 10:20 am

A cautionary note, VC, if you haven’t used stevia before: it is intensely sweet, 10x or more than sugar, so less is better to start with, half the tiny little scoop that comes in the jar, add more if needed. You probably don’t want to stick your finger in, then taste, as it is Wowee! But it is so much better than sugar in so many ways… No buzz, no high then let down. Just seems a better product, for me anyway! Good luck, will be listening for feedback. Ah, packing…… ;)

Hi Pamela, you and I talked about this before. I have been using stevia for more than a year now, but I buy the liquid one which I find somewhat expensive here. My first purchase was in (organic) powder form and I didn’t like it at all because of the strong after taste. Because I needed to cut down on sugar and really like sweet things I decided to try again with the liquid. We have been friends ever since..

Insight: Fed knew of Libor issue in 2007-08, proposed reforms

    uh oh…..

According to the calendar of then New York Fed President, Timothy Geithner, who is now U.S. Treasury Secretary, it even held a “Fixing LIBOR” meeting between 2:30-3:00 pm on April 28, 2008. At least eight senior Fed staffers were invited.

Goooood Moooooorning OOOOs!!! What a great getting up day again on Planet TOD. Funny, how the lower 90s feel like a cool front passing through. I’m seeing the messaging changing and, while there’s no overt push back, many of our media friends are asking at least one follow up question lately. Also, I dare anyone to show me a picture of Mittstake holding a child facing him, and actually held against him. Every shot that I’ve seen so far, the kid is at arms length and facing away from him. There’s a psychology about this that piques. Maybe it’s because he had all boys. Oh well, kids and animals…..we know that story.

My political take today is that as long as we keep the truth out there in the swing states, the tide will continue to shift towards PBO. Folks in those states are ‘common’ folks, who work hard and have a sense of fairness. I think Mittiful will pay for the company he keeps who look down their noses at the commoners.

What a great idea ! This would make news !

President Obama has been making the case for quite some time now that supply-side economics doesn’t work and the Bush years are solid proof for that. The media has heard it many times in his speeches so they’re bored when they hear it and they don’t treat this as “news”. But bring someone like Nick Hanauer at an Obama event, and there is a chance that because this is something different, the media will report it and, one can hope, his speech will be shown on tv.

      DEMOCRATS: “MAKE IT IN AMERICA”

      ===============================

      Make it in America

The Democrats’ Make it in America plan is a bold initiative to get America working again by building the products of the future here at home. Make it in America will create the conditions necessary to unleash American skill and ingenuity to power our 21st century economy. As President Obama has said, America must out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world and our initiative will help our nation do just that. When we Make it in America, American families will make it too.

It’s time we see the words Made in America again

It is time we saw the words Made in America again. Manufacturing is already leading our economic recovery. If we make the necessary investments now, we can ensure continued economic growth and stay competitive in the global economy. Bills in the Make it in America plan will create jobs, improve the roads and highways that move our goods, help businesses get the money needed to expand and create jobs, train and equip Americans to develop and build the products of the future, and make powering our homes, factories and cars more affordable and cleaner for the air we breathe and water we drink.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS BLOCK DEMOCRATS “MAKE IT IN AMERICA” PROPOSAL

Hoyer Statement on Senate Republicans Blocking Consideration of Rebuild America Jobs Act

      ————————————-

WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the Rebuild America Jobs Act:

“I am disappointed that Republicans continue their refusal to work with Democrats on jobs legislation. This is the third time in the past few weeks that Senate Republicans have voted to block even the consideration of a jobs bill. At the same time, House Republican leaders have not brought any of the Democrats’ Make It In America proposals onto the floor or put forth a comprehensive jobs plan of their own. The American people deserve a Congress that works, that is focused on creating jobs, and it is increasingly clear the Republicans will not deliver.”

PRESIDENT OBAMA SPEAKS ABOUT INSOURCING JOBS

      February 15, 2012

      —————————————————————————–

President Obama speaks on bringing manufacturing jobs back to America to help restore middle class security, and calls for changing our tax code to stop rewarding businesses that ship jobs overseas, and start rewarding companies like Master Lock that create jobs right here in America.

Everything You Need to Know About Insourcing

      ———————————————————–

      What is insourcing?

After decades of watching American companies take jobs to other countries, we’re beginning to see entrepreneurs and manufactures make the decision to keep factories and production facilities here in the United States—or even bring jobs back to the U.S. from overseas.
      .
      .
What can we do to encourage it?

If we want to encourage insourcing, there are four things the federal government needs to do:

      Create incentives for businesses to invest in hiring and expanding;
      Ensure that U.S. businesses seeking to expand globally have access to new markets;
Guarantee that American workers are the mostly highly-educated and best-trained in the world; and
Provide the financial and technical support necessary for companies to grow and expand.
The goal of today’s insourcing forum at the White House is to begin the discussion necessary to accomplish all four of those goals.

In the coming weeks, President Obama will put forward new tax proposals to reward companies that choose to invest or bring back jobs to the United States and to eliminate tax advantages for companies moving jobs overseas.

Many people worship money……it’s amazing how their views can be distorted….if someone has money, many view them automatically as as a success, superior. When I read some of the comments from RWers in blogs…..the same idiocy always comes back ”they are jealous of his success”

I don’t equate ”success” with money or money with ”education”….even if you went to the best schools money can buy, you can still be ignorant.

Many of them are rich because of their parents’ wealth and connections.

      Like Romney, Bush, Trump.

I don’t associate any of them with success and education…..they are sad little men, spoiled-brat rich fools who never had to deal with consequences for their actions.

      • 104 vcprezofan2

Oh, Christi, I don’t associate any of them with anything ‘superior’, or even with ‘success’. At least not the kind of success that I find meaningful. On the very, very rare occasion I consider these ‘superior’ folk I find them rather pathetic – to be handed so much and yet show such little character. Then again, it makes sense, because character is often developed through adversity as well as from having good examples.

    NEWSFLASH:

EVERY FAMILY WILL KEEP TAX CUTS ON THEIR FIRST $250,000 OF TAXABLE INCOME

    Tax fight taking shape

    By Steve Benen

    ———————————-

But as the larger discussion moves forward, let’s pause to note a detail that routinely gets lost in the shuffle: thanks to the way marginal tax rates work, even those with incomes above $250,000 would get a tax break. Kevin Drum put together this image yesterday to help drive the point home.

As Dan Amira added, “Obama is not proposing that families making up to $250,000 a year keep their tax cuts while families making more than that don’t. He’s proposing that every family keep their tax cuts on their first $250,000 of taxable income.”
    .
    .
And while Republicans remain in a perpetual state of outrage over Obama’s middle-class tax cut package, it’s also worth emphasizing that the president’s position is the popular one.

MITT ROMNEY’S BLIND TRUST NO SO BLIND

    By Matthew Mosk – December 19, 2011

    ———————————————-

When Mitt Romney faced questions on the campaign trail four years ago about investments in firms engaged in embryonic stem cell research, the presidential candidate had a ready explanation — he was unaware because his vast financial portfolio was under the control of an independent trustee. Last week, Romney’s campaign pulled out the same explanation when ABC News sought details about the candidate’s holdings in the Cayman Islands, a notorious offshore tax haven.

“We remind you that Gov. Romney does not choose anything; these are BLIND TRUSTS,” a campaign official wrote in an email.

But government ethics experts and election lawyers told ABC News that Romney’s trust might not be quite as blind as he has long maintained. That’s because Romney placed his quarter-billion dollar family fortune in the hands of his personal lawyer and longtime associate Bradford Malt.

      July 10, 2012 at 11:40 am

Does Romney seriously thinks that americans will believe he doesn’t know nor care if a big chunk of his money goes to offshore tax havens?

      Come on…

I see this whole thing as a lose-lose situation for Romney. Many americans will see through the lousy excuses and think that Romney is probably lying. OR… in the unlikely scenario that they buy into the stupid explanations, at least they’ll see that a man who claims being very business savvy isn’t even aware of important facts regarding his own finances ! So Romney ends up looking either dishonest or clueless.

  31. 116 Squarepeg
    July 10, 2012 at 10:18 am

Heres a good article for those of us who were worried about Obama supposedly being outspent by Romney:

    Beware in Comparing Fundraising Figures

First Read: “We want to make an additional point about the money race: Way too many people are jumping to conclusions right now. What appears to be going on is that Romney — since becoming his party’s presumptive presidential nominee — is grabbing the big checks from his party (up to $75,000 per donor that goes to the campaign, RNC, and victory fund). If he can keep up this pace in July and August, then we know he has a financial juggernaut on his hands. But if the pace slows down, then you know that his campaign has picked all the low-hanging fundraising fruit.”

“Another thing to keep in mind: While the Romney camp controls the RNC and victory-fund money, there are strings attached to those dollars. (For example: In this presidential contest, coordinated party expenditures are limited to $21.7 million.) And here’s one other point to make: It’s likely that Obama’s June campaign-only haul isn’t far off from the $54 million it raised in June ’08.”

“Those comparisons for the remaining months will be important. Both campaigns are pursuing DIFFERENT financial strategies. Team Obama is going for maximum spending FLEXIBILITY and because they didn’t have to spend primary money on a primary, they have that luxury. Team Romney is looking for maximum fundraising capacity, but it comes with more strings on how much of the money they are raising can be spent on TV advertising.”

The Bain attacks appear to be working for Obama in North Carolina. 29% of voters say that Romney’s work at Bain makes them feel more positive toward him, while 40% say it makes them feel more negative.

-Our North Carolina poll last month found Obama leading Romney only 76-20 with African Americans, a level of support that we said at the time was unrealistically low for Obama. This month his advantage is back up to 85-12. Chances are he’ll even still do better than that but Romney’s 20% black support last month definitely looks like it was more statistical anomaly than concerning trend for the President.

      • 136 japa21
        July 10, 2012 at 11:06 am

Yeah, most of us here really did not believe the AA split the last time. One of the reasons I don’t really get to lathered up about polls at this time is that this is exactly when Romney should be doing his best. A lot of people’s discontent is still directed at PBO (rightly or wrongly)and as Boehner said, very few people will actually be voting for Romney; most of his votes will be anti-PBO votes.

The closer to the election, the more people will pay attention to what Romney actually stands for and a lot of people will realize just how dangerous electing him will be. The whole purpose of the PBO campaign right now is to create a ceiling for Romney, keeping him right around 45%. Then it will be more about creating a more pro-PBO voting base.

My question to Mitt who really does have the right to put his money wherever he wants. What’s wrong with the American people that you don’t want them to get any benefit from your money? Is there something you know about them that I don’t? I mean, don’t financial institutions in these countries ‘use’ the money deposited to wheel and deal and gain interest from its use. If there is no difference for Romney between stashing it overseas and stashing it in America why not leave it in America?
