Steve Benen: Quite a few Americans are going to go to their mailbox this week and next, open it, and find something unexpected: a check from their insurance company. It’s another side benefit from the Affordable Care Act that most Americans mistakenly thinks they don’t like:

When Laird Le found a check for $70.02 in the mail, he wasn’t quite sure why. Turns out, he’s one of the estimated 13 million Americans that will receive a rebate on their health insurance premiums as a result of the health care reform law recently upheld by the Supreme Court…..

…. “Obamacare” has an 80/20 rule, which requires insurance companies to spend roughly 80% of all premiums on actual health benefits, rather than company overhead (marketing, lobbying, executive salaries, etc.). When an insurer spends less than 80% on health care for its customers, the company is required to send the customer a check for the difference.

How many checks are we talking about? According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly 16 million Americans will get rebates before the legal due date, which is Aug. 1…. when they realize it’s because of Obamacare, maybe the law will start to look a little better in those consumers’ eyes….

TPM: President Obama over the past week has hammered away at Mitt Romney’s business record. It’s like he’s “hellbent on making the word ‘Bain’ synonymous with a source of harm or ruin,” Stephen Colbert said on Monday. Over the weekend, the Obama campaign released a blistering new ad, mocking Romney’s rendition of “America the Beautiful” with a series of scathing headlines. “Mitt was originally on key,” Colbert said. “But he outsourced many of those notes to India.”

….. Romney adviser Ed Gillespie tried to clear the whole thing up on Sunday, saying Romney retired from Bain capital “retroactively.” What a novel idea, Colbert thought. “So he wasn’t responsible for firing all of those people whose jobs were outsourced. He was responsible for retroactively not hiring them.”

Congrats on first, aamom! You’re absolutely right – it’s lovely seeing them squirm. But, I fully expect them to start kicking back soon. They’re not used to losing so badly, and they are going to come up with some more dirty tricks soon. Unfortunately, they’ve got nothing to offer, so all they’ve got are dirty tricks. It makes them dangerous.

On a media conference call organized by the Romney campaign, Sununu said, “I wish this president would learn how to be an American.”

They can’t hide their racism but it will backfire big time if they keep the same tactics they used in 2008….

It might be worth it to invest in a VPN tunnel. Basically, you sign up for the service, log in, and it makes your IP address look like it’s in the US. That way you can watch Colbert and Stewart and any other US show that’s online.

I used Overplay. They were very good and very reasonable. Don’t use them any more because I have, um, other sources to get my Brit shows. They charge $10 a month, and I never had a problem with them.

Thank you LL. Is Overplay a service only available to those living in the uS? I am in Sydney, Australia and am desperate to be able to watch HBO and many other US programmes – especially as the election nears. If you are not sure re my geo situation it’s cool – I thought I would try to get your expert advice first before trying other avenues.

Those who tweet…..I was just listening to Stephanie Miller on the radio and a caller asked a profound question for the Journalists:

How many years of tax returns are the Romney camp requesting from their potential VP candidates?

My question is how far back has Romney been vetting these VP potential candidates, High school and College? if so, then Romney’s high school and college antics are legitimate vetting possibilities. They have been vetting pres Obama since birth.

What do you guys think? Can we make these kind of questions Tweeterable and are they good enough for the twitter machine?

For those who do not remember, when he was WH Chief of Staff during the George H. W. Bush administration he used government limos and planes between DC and New York to work on his private stamp collection. “Free suff” is OK for some.

    Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

    They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.

    They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full..

The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

    The students laughed..

‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things – God, your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions – and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car..

The sand is everything else – the small stuff.

‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

    The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

    Spend time with your children.

    Spend time with your parents.

    Visit with grandparents.
    Visit with your Aunts.

Take your spouse out to dinner.

    Play another 18.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

Take care of the golf balls first – the things that really matter.

    Set your priorities.

    The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.

The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’

The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Please share this with someone you care about.
    I JUST DID!

The British government accepts that colonial forces in Kenya tortured and abused detainees during the Mau Mau rebellion, the High Court has heard.

Three elderly Kenyans who are suing the government for damages were told it did not dispute that “terrible things” had happened to them.

Their lawyers say it is the first ever official acknowledgement by the UK.

The revolt against British rule in Kenya in the 1950s and 1960s was marked by atrocities, with thousands killed.

    ///

The three Kenyans want an official apology and damages to set up a Mau Mau welfare fund.

Their lawyers have said they represent hundreds of Kenyans who were victims of the brutality during the revolt.

In his ruling in 2011, Mr Justice McCombe emphasised he had not found there was systematic torture in the Kenyan camps nor that, if there was, the British government was liable for what had passed.

It will now be decided whether a fair trial is still possible.

The hearing will have access to an archive of 8,000 secret files that were sent back to Britain after Kenya gained its independence in 1963.

Earlier in July, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron accusing Britain of neglecting its human rights duties over the case.

    The hearing continues.

Well howdee do Os!!! Just in time to tell you about another great getting up day on TOD street. So, I leave for awhile yesterday to take care of errands and such, and PBO goes and show the world what a mighty smoocher he is. Makes me wonder how long the line was to get into the women’s bathroom after seeing that. The only thing that would have made it steamier would have been if they were outside in the rain. Lawd, that’s the last time I leave him unattended.

My political take today is that if the Pittiful campaign thinks that PBO’s campaign is going to let him get on offense, or run away from his record, they should ask that fly when it tried to escape PBO mid-air. You can fly, but you can’t hide.

HSBC provided a conduit for “drug kingpins and rogue nations”, according to a US Senate committee investigating money laundering claims at the bank.

Its report said suspicious funds from countries including Mexico, Iran and Syria had passed through the bank.

The committee is hearing from HSBC officials, one of whom said he found it “painful and embarrassing” to talk about the bank’s shortcomings.

HSBC’s head of group compliance, David Bagley, stepped down at the hearing.

Mr Bagley told the committee that the bank had “fallen short of our own and regulators’ expectations but that a major overhaul of the bank’s compliance activities was underway and that HSBC had “learned a lot of valuable lessons”.

Converse girl hopes to meet President Obama:

CONVERSE, Texas – A Converse girl is hoping to complete a dream come true — meeting the President of the United States, face to face, when he visits San Antonio… Sidney Stubbs, 10, saw part of her dream fulfilled recently when she wrote a letter to, then received a response from, the White House.

The soon-to-be fifth grader said she was compelled to write after seeing a news story in April about some less than favorable ratings President Obama had received in a survey. “My mom and dad and my aunt and uncle, they always pay attention to these things and I’m always listening,” Sidney explained. “I wrote to him to show him that he was doing a good job and we were really proud of him.”

hey cookemom… yes in ND- snob hill is just what used to be the newer/wealthier homes here in town, 40-60 yrs ago… but of course we’ve had lots of new building since then. Just an FYI, my eldest son came here to college back about 15 yrs ago when the only black people in town werethe college kids on the basketball team- like him. For the most part he was accepted and treated respectfully- so don’t fear her safety, okay? Especially since now there is a far greater influx of diversity here due to the oil boom. Black folks are everywhere these days ;) That I’m very very happy to finally see. What happened today was just a coward being a coward.. and every once in while it happens but only when I’m in my car, they’re in theirs and they can hide.

Not moved to Baltimore yet… because the first house I offered on- turned out to be more lemon than I could afford ;) I put in an offer on another house last week, but it could be as much as two months before it completes… and in the meantime my house is closing tomorrow and I’ve agree to be out of it by Aug 10th.. thus my son and I may well be ‘nomads’ for a month or so.. fingers crossed it won’t be so long. And very best wishes to your daughter at all times.

its okay. I do say a lot of negative things about this place, because I’ve been here so long and see beneath the surface… so I’m more cynical. But like I said when my eldest son lived here, although it was culture shock and a real adjustment for him- he did succeed here- I am still asked about him by total strangers- how he’s doing, etc. He was a gooood ballplayer and even though he was one of a handful of black students he was voted class President his second yr there and graduated summa cum laude. Yes he ran into a couple of bad folks- but he handled them and they were few and far between. I believe your daughter will do quite well here. She’s smart, she’s motivated/ambitious- and that is exactly what white folks here need to see, as for too many of the locals- they’ve only ‘met’ black people on tv- so she is much like our President in that she is a trailblazer here. Even I wasn’t aware til recently that Miss ND – just crowned last month is a young black woman. Hurrah!! :)

My son moved out here when I was living in Florida… this is not the place I wanted him to be… but it turned out to be a very good time in his life on many levels.. and he did move on.. ;) thankfully… and just last week he got engaged to a Baltimore girl! Sherijr, I hear you and I do understand exactly what you are saying. I live in a very red city within a blue state. Cali. However, due to the time frame that I had to find a home, I did not have the time to do as much homework in areas that I normally would do so serious homework. Having a precious mother very ill and living in another state, trying to complete the winter semester at my school and having 60 days to do all of what comes with finding a home a neighborhood, etc., this happened to me as the years passed.

I became involved with my city manager department, mayor, and city council members and even three of my police chiefs. Had meeting at my home and got involved with community improvements etc. Attended council meetings still while teaching daily and driving long distance to my job.

Then when retiring, things changed a little. THEN when President Barack Obama ran for POTUS, things got messy. Then when he WON, things got downright shit hitting the fan. Since I am very much a speak up person, I saw first hand how I had to change the level of communication within my town. I hate that, but I do live here. I have a sibling who is in a very high and protected position, so I have to keep my tongue as times. You know how are parents taught us while living in the southern part of the USA.

So, each day that I am able to be out and about, I have to remember to keep it calm because my brother does not have the time to come out and bail me out of jail. Plus, I would not in anyway embarrass my family and his very hard work of getting to where he is and how hard my mother worked to make sure that we both got to fulfill the American Dream. And I do mean that with much thankfulness and humbleness.

But these ‘crackers can get to the raw nerves daily and it is just because of the fact that we have President Barack Obama sitting in the Oval Office. I finally had to dismiss a medical doctor because of the ugly and unprofessional attitude he displayed while trying to treat me. I told him off, walked out, and walked down to file a compliant on him. Done.

It hurts like hell, believe me. It makes me want to ‘shame them all out.’ But I have to hold my tongue often. But my eyes and attitude speak volumes. But it wears on those of us who live in these areas where we see this, feel this, and have to endure this until after 2017. I am just grateful that I am alive to help POB make history and make his presidency a great one. Nothing stops me from that.

So, to all of us who have to deal with this hatefulness, stand tall, walk in the room with diginity, and speak with a firm voice in what you believe in. It is the price that we have to pay, but Lawdy, it is worth it all. I would not do this for anyone else but my precious mother, and she is gone now. But my head will Never bend down to the hate, but my feet will walk with the grace and proudness that keep my path steady throughout this journey. ((((( We show love back when they dish out hate))))))) HZ

One flop we well not see flipper #BainMitt take is revealing those 23 years of returns … the last statement in this video may be among the only truths we will hear him utter ….

‘you know, I’ve put out as much as we’re going to put out ….’

Remember it was 2008 that he provided those 23 years of returns to McCain, i.e., he revealed filings from 1984 onward and, thus, the entire record of transactions that include the sale of Damon in August of 1993, the month that Operation LABSCAM unloaded on Damon in the largest case of Medicare Fraud in history, up to that time.

Being at the edge of exploiting tax havens and every other trick the wealthy have access is not illegal, it’s just exploitative based on their ability to buy legislators and Presidents – and we know those who’ve been on the payroll for the past 50 years. Americans will be offended, they will truly be put off by #BainMitt crushing US companies, people’s jobs, pensions, etc as he pioneered in outsourcing. They may even miss the obvious felonies in lying not just to the SEC but the MA Ballot Commission. But, except for the hard core bigots (who’d likely just stay home in Nov), the one thing most Americans would find totally reprehensible is Medicare Fraud. One suspects that ‘Chicago’ has the full scoop on Damon and will keep that powder dry until the days after the Republican Convention, though my preference for months has been that they bring Damon front and center. They’re the pros so I’m more than happy to wait!!

    Calling all TOD detectives.
! am trying to find video footage of tweety saying this about PBO in 2004:

“I have to tell ya – a little chill in my, in my legs now. That is an amazing moment in history right there. It is really an amazing moment. A keynoter like I’ve never heard….I’ve just seen the first black president there!”
    – MSNBC’s Chris Matthews following Obama’s speech before the Democratic convention, July 27, 2004

Any ideas on how to find it other than writing to MSNBC? Would appreciate any suggestions.

That’s about all you do with these fools – laugh at them. Their views mean zero to thinking, decent people; other than to show us exactly who they are, and differentiate them from the rest of civilized society.

Robney is on tv now, same old- it’s Obamas fault, no substance and just red meat for the tea baggers!

yep, before our very eyes. Romney speaking now with what he thinks will change the narrative. Heck, that fly that O whacked in mid-air, couldn’t even change directions to get away from PBO.

Willard is going on about PBO giving money to his campaign contributors. When will the MSM ask him who are his contributors?

Romney only brought up Fiskar and their Finland plant. I don’t think Fiskar was a major contributor or maybe not at all. And stimulus funds to him only covered jobs to Americans in the US.

Romney seems to have brought in another friendly group to try to produce enthusiasm. He is lying entirely throughout as usual.

That assertion was TOTALLY DEBUNKED yesterday on Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer–of all places. Even though later, Wolf allowed them to say it again, without challenge. Another head-shaker.

the last two weeks for rmoney have been about as bad as can be for a candidate. that’s why i predicted a couple days ago that we’ll see a big push of positive polling for rmoney this week and next, naturally, you know the exact opposite of reality. it’s not about a “horserace” in my opinion…it’s strictly about propping up republicans…any republicans. looks like it’s starting.

    “STAGE”

The Bain Ad That Romney Should Fear the Most

    ————————————————–

Mitt Romney survived a relentless barrage of attack ads about Bain Capital during the Republican primary, but now there’s one ad that appears to be breaking through more than any other.

The one-minute spot, made by the super PAC supporting President Obama, Priorities USA Action, already has more than 1 million hits on YouTube, more than 10 times any other super PAC ad. More significant, a person at a Republican group that has tested Democratic attacks on Romney told ABC News the ad is potentially the most devastating yet.

    Susan Page again? Anyways…

It is interesting how the News is twisting themselves on knots, now they are talking about how wonderful Pawlentyy for VP would be?

Now they are talking about Sununu, and Susan Page is sticking up for him.

    Also, man is she ugly!

ROMNEY CAMPAIGN IS COMING UNDONE (SUNUNU’S UNHINGED ATTACK)

    Romney campaign attacks Obama’s patriotism

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————————-

For those who can’t watch clips online, Sununu, in an unhinged attack, told reporters, “I wish this president would learn how to be an American.” The quote was in direct reference to the ridiculous, out-of-context talking point we discussed this morning.

Sununu, who has a well-deserved reputation as a GOP loudmouth, also said this morning the president “has no idea how the American system functions,” in part because “he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something.” (Update: Sununu also went berserk on Fox.)

Remember, this is one of Romney’s top surrogates, speaking on behalf of the candidate himself. The intensity of the over-the-top vitriol, following staff shake-ups, and hastily thrown together interviews, also reinforces the perception that the Romney campaign is feeling a sense of desperation and losing its composure.
