    I brought this over.

GM TOD….I was shocked to get up and read about the CO shootings this morning. My son went to the midnight show with a friend last night…though not in CO, it gave me pause, to say the least.I am thinking of those that lost their lives and those that have been injured in this senseless tragedy. Yet again. An to make my blood boil even more…I read what the crazy, unhinged, incompetent congressman Louie Gohmert said about this today….are you ready? Someone here said this would happen…..he said this:

thinkprogress More from Rep. Gohmert: “Was there nobody that was carrying a gun that could have stopped this guy more quickly?” thkpr.gs/Pio2OC

These sick folks like Gohmert want it to be like it was in the old western days were everybody walk around with a gun and having shoot outs. Sick, sick, sick people, and what’s scary is he’s in Congress.

Actually, the Old West was like that only in movies. Many towns had strict gun control laws. Gohmert and folks like him believe in the fantasy of movies, not in reality. Far more people, in terms of percent of the population, walk around with guns now than did in the Old West.

Yep, and apart from 9/11, America has been TERRORIZED from within by a series of vicious killers everyone of whom are enabled by the NRA and the weapons industry it represents. And, the 2nd Amendment, originally designed to provide of a functional militia, has been used as an excuse by that weapons industry to leverage fear in order to sell ever more deadly arms to frightened folk – a vicious feedback loop that must be halted.

    • 51 japa21

Although there may be something to that, it is just as likely it was chosen because the shooter knew the theater would be packed and it would have the highest publicity value. I think to do any speculating at this point is inappropriate. We decry it when the RW always suspect Muslims are involved in anything bad before there is any evidence. Let’s not stoop to that level.

        July 20, 2012 at 1:10 pm

I agree. It is reasonable to factor Rush’s rant into our suppositions, but they are just that: suppositions.

On the Stephanie Miller Show today they had an expert in rightwing terrorism, and he said one of the things that is almost always true is that the initial reports are false.

Major props to The Stephanie Miller Show today with Chris, Jim and John Fugelsang filling in for Stephanie (she had a sick doggie at home), who kept all of their Aurora news politics-free until we know otherwise.

And special thanks to Jackie Schectner, who reads the news on Current in the morning but is a skilled reporter. She was the conduit for information this morning and she is a reporter of the Old School — we report the facts when we know the facts.

Her field of expertise is health care. She was the only one when the SCOTUS decision on ACA came down to say, “Wait a minute. the mandate HAS been upheld” when idiots at CNN and their sheep were reporting otherwise.

The Obama campaign ads are not ‘negative’ – they are truthful. It’s fine if they don’t air them today out of respect for the victims of the latest act of domestic terrorism fueled by the NRA, Limbaugh and other hate mongers, but that should not be an indication that they are ‘negative.’

Why would Rush Limbaugh do this … why would he take a character (that has existed for years apparently in this comic book saga) just because Bane/Bain are homonyms and rant and rave and try to stir up a conspiracy, of course aimed at our President, from something so innocent and then people die. I have no idea if this shooter listens to Rush Limbaugh, but I would not be surprised or if he read or someone told him what Rush spent two days ranting about. Rush, Palin, Beck … all of them throw fuel on fires … after they help to create or stir up the fire. I am sick of them. I do blame them. I don’t think this shooter has this all planned for weeks, I think he probably has hoarded his arsenal, that he walks around with hate directed against many things, but that something triggered this attack during this particular movie’s special showings.

Good morning all. I woke up to this tragic news and am saddened that we’ve come to this. I think it’s time to revisit the 2nd amendment and the NRA’s role on this planet.
I’m watching the news now and they’re reporting that the shooters apartment was boobie trapped. Imagine that!
When will it stop. This country does not need automatic weapons. They shouldn’t even be manufactured here unless under guard of the military. They are not needed to hunt deer/elk.

    • July 20, 2012 at 11:23 am

Agree, 100 %, sailor. We know the only remotely justifiable reason for manufacturing weapons and it has ZERO to do with 2nd Amendment citizen rights or with ‘hunting.’

Aye Lt. The real sad part beside the loss of life is the assholes that want to break up the police/firefighters unions. I agree completely, yardarm. Sadly nothing’s going to happen until we have a Congress that’s NOT owned by the gun lobby. We have a political system that’s built on bribery. Why is the NRA so powerful? Because of the money that they throw at politicians. Why is the oil & gas lobby so powerful? Same thing.

Until meaningful campaign finance reform is in place, meaningful gun control is not gonna happen and more lives will be lost.

Greed is killing this country. We the People, let this happen. We the People, must stop it NOW!

Interviews with a half-dozen of Romney’s former partners and associates, as well as public records, show that he was not merely an absentee owner during this period. He signed dozens of company documents, including filings with regulators on a vast array of Bain’s investment entities. And he drove the complex negotiations over his own large severance package, a deal that was critical to the firm’s future without him, according to his former associates.

ndeed, by remaining CEO and sole shareholder, Romney held on to his leverage in the talks that resulted in his generous 10-year retirement package, according to former associates.

“The elephant in the room was not whether Mitt was involved in investment decisions but Mitt’s retention of control of the firm and therefore his ability to extract a huge economic benefit by delaying his giving up of that control,” said one former associate, who, like some other Romney associates, spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the company.

Romney had a lot at stake because Bain had become hugely valuable under his leadership. Romney established Bain Capital in 1984, and in the 15 years that followed, the company had invested $260 million in its 10 largest deals (out of more than 100 during that period) and had reaped a nearly $3 billion return.

On one deal alone, involving an Italian phone directory company, Bain had invested $51 million and reaped more than $1 billion, with Romney’s personal profit being as much as $40 million, according to a former partner. Bain’s funds nearly doubled investors’ money annually during Romney’s tenure.

Romney had expected to remain at Bain Capital for years. He initially rejected the idea of running the Olympics, recounting in his memoir, “Turnaround,” that “after fifteen years of effort, Bain Capital had become extraordinarily lucrative. How could I walk away from the golden goose, especially now that it was laying even more golden eggs?” To do so, Romney wrote, meant “I would walk away from my leadership at Bain Capital at the height of its profitability.”

by dagnome on Fri Jul 20, 2012 at 08:38:13 AM PDT

    The news report I just saw ONLY aired Romney’s (0+ / 0-)

condolences and then 5 or so minutes later after commercials….made a statement about The President’s…paraphrased!

The root of all evil in the States is corporate media…..huge corporations that control information, that support the GOP therefore supporting a party that has been hijacked by far right extremists a long time ago…..religious right…..all for money, greed, control,

It’s so toxic in a civilized society.

The Obama campaign is uses the term “contrast ads” to refer to ads that highlight Romney’s record. They’re not NEGATIVE ads, they’re fact-based clips that inform the electorate about the opponent’s record.

The other side’s ads present made up “facts” that serve only to distort the President’s record, attack the President’s character and instill fear. Those are what I’d call NEGATIVE ads.

  41. July 20, 2012 at 12:34 pm

‘Good Morning Os….a sad, but still great to get up morning in TODtown. Prayers and condolences to the family and friends of the victims of such horrendous actions. Sympathy to a community that will never be the same. Thank you to PBO for such heartfelt words of pause and reflection. Hug your child, and love the ones you’re with. Life is so unpredictable and reminds us that in the scheme of things, our goal has to be making it more meaningful every day, with a conscious effort toward what it takes to make that happen on a spiritually, politically, and emotionally levels.

My political take today is I hope that Robmoney is able to display some humanness in what he says when he speaks on today’s tragedy, and not use the opportunity to pander to the NRA or any other special interest group. This is one time that I wish he would copy PBO.

Notice that the MSM is quick to report that the shooter was a Ph.D. student in neuroscience at Univ of Colorado, but very little else. You can be a ph.D. student and still be very conservative and pro-gun rights. I hate to be cynical, but Romney mightske a nice statement today, but he’s still feeding at the trough of the NRA. He neverade a nice statement after the Trayvon Martin shooting. He is still inciting hatred with his racist lies against the President. He’s still got very ugly intentions against people in this country. I don’t believe his statement is sincere. I’m sorry. I think he just thinks it’s another opportunity to appear ‘presidential’. And with the media equating his statement with the Presodent’s statement, it makeshift furious; especially when I hear that some statements read Romney’s statement and then ignored or paraphrased the statement from the actual sitting President.

I feel for those who were lost or injured. This is all becoming too common; too familiar. That’s a tragedy.

  49. July 20, 2012 at 12:54 pm

BTW, as predicted by our friends on 6 July, the ‘tipping point’ in Syria is now well passed and over the next days the liberation of Damascus and Syria will intensify significantly … irrespective of what is reported by the corporate #NEWSTAINERS.

Why is the RNC wasting money on negative ads in Georgia. ?

    They are not to bright.

Hea, President Obama almost won Georgia in 2008. I know people don’t want to talk about but Romney is a Mormon regardless Evangelicals still fear him.

      • July 20, 2012 at 1:04 pm

True; and we have a highly motivated – as in Fired Up, Ready To Go – bunch of #PBO fans in Georgia. #BainMitt knows he’s got a fight on his hands there.

      • July 20, 2012 at 1:06 pm

I think same thing applies here in TN. I think that’s why I have not seen ONE Romney sticker. The one I have seen was last Wednesday on my trip to see my mom….on I81 and it was on a truck with VA plates. I serve in our food pantry with an older woman who does not like PO, but she flat out said, “I will NOT vote for Romney.”

I have yet to see any Romney stickers while out & about either.

          • July 20, 2012 at 1:32 pm

As you know, I am on the road every week to JC and back. This week I went on to Abington, then back home yesterday. Mid June we were on the road to Asheville and back. I am always on the lookout, where around town or on the highway. Also, I have not seen ONE ad for Romney here. PO has two that play here. The guys running for congress definitely get their negative digs in about PO, but nothing for Romney.

tnmtngirl, the older woman reason for not liking President Obama is what?

          • July 20, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Pure guess, but yet am fairly sure it is the color of his skin. For over a year, if the subject came up in any way or his name was mentioned, her reply was “You like him????” Or, it was something else negative and the message was “I don’t trust him”…..and what do you think the rest of that statement is IF she said more? I do know one of her BIG issues is Obamacare. Of course, she’s retired and on Medicare. Shows how uninformed she is, huh?

They need to solidify the base. If they can’t get the base out to the polls, PBO can take GA and they also want to make suere the House seats stay Rep.

I’m sorry, it’s not what a man says that matter to me, it’s what he has in his heart and his actions that tells me all I need to know.

I am not saying that Mitt Romney is not horrified by the tragedy…..I’m sure he is sincere.

But even if he had a giant American flag behind him…..I cannot look at this man and forget what policies he supports, how he made his fortune, all the lives he destroyed on his path….the way him and his campaign want to portray the President as ”foreign” ……catnip for his racist base, the brithers, hatred on the President.

The way he never ever condem any of the violent rhetoric from the far right, hate radio….a major major factor of the violence and division in the States.

    He supports the NRA 100%

He wants to repeal the ACA, a law that will save so many lives.
He wants to privatize Medicaire…..something that will hurt millions of seniors.

More tax cuts for people like him and tax on people who can’t afford it……destroying the middle class….

The list is endless…………so no, I would never say that it was nice of him because it’s one speech……his actions matter a lot more to me.

    I don’t like hypocrisy.

Is that what so call journalists have become now adays, they have to analysis speeches. I have a feeling Romney statement was no better than President Obama. Maybe Alexander is a Mormon. Where is that Mormon leader when he is lying every darn day? Where were that Mormon leader when he were saying that all black people want is free stuff from the Government.

        July 20, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Speaking of free stuff, someone needs to ask Willard what he thinks about his NFL team owner friends getting free stadiums from taxpayers.

Romney’s words were pretty and likely sincere. What I saw as the difference between his and President Obama’s is that the crowd assembled were much more plugged in with him than Romney’s. They were enthusiastic to have him there, but held it in as best they could because he signaled for them to do so. Still applause and “Four more years.” You could feel the close connection between them.

I expect they were written by someone else. And he began the event a half hour late. He has speech writers and this is what they do: provide words. Chances are good that President Obama wrote his own. They were less flowery, but deeply and sincerely felt by him. No one can honestly deny that.

Geezzzz it’s like I live in a swing state and not Canada…..

  56. July 20, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Despite the polls, some are becoming more certain.

    Intrade:

    Obama 57.0
    Romney 39.9

Note that Mittens drops below 40 for the first time in a long while. Looks like the money is not convinced he’s a worthy or formidable candidate.

  57. July 20, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Slightly OT and I know that at times like these I know there is no “political etiquette”, but was is inappropriate for Romney to give an on camera statement rather than a written one. Obama was on camera, but he was supposed to be at a rally, and he is the POTUS. I was just wondering about that.

Driving into work this morning before I tuned into the news I was listening to our lovely First Lady Michelle Obama on the launch of The “It Takes One” campaign on the Steve Harvey Morning Show (it was recorded very early today before the news of the day broke).

    She was so wonderful.

I know! Isn’t it scrumptious? Jeff Daniels is awesome! The show is too new to have been nominated for Emmy’s this year, but they ought to clean up next year and they’ve aired 3 episodes. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. But look, if you’re as big a West Wing fan as I am (haveing another West Wing viewing party tonight as a matter of fact) and you know that Aaron Sorkin, father of West Wing, created The Newsroom, how could you not be all in? Right?

Another Must-Watch is “Political Animals” on USA Network. Sigourney Weaver is SUPERB ias the former First Lady, current Secretary of State about to run for President. She was on the Bill Press show this morning. I could listen to her voice all the time. Love her. By the way, she is a big Obama supporter. Was so in 08, same this year too.

I finished the first episode of The Newsroom half an hour ago and started on the second episode. the first episode got me misty eyed. i love that Jeff Daniel’s character is a republican. and in the first episode they kept panning in on a pic of PBO in the background!!! I’m seriously loving the show!!!

Watching the press conference with Steve Hogan; Mayor of Aurora and Gov. John Hickenlooper is just hard. The mayor has me all choked up talking about the children and teenagers who were brutally murdered. These were kids who just wanted to watch a movie. That’s all. Who does this to people? What kind of a monster does this to people?

Hey guys – totally slammed at work, so I haven’t read the thread…. but since I woke up this morning, the COLLECTIVE NEWS MEDIA have aired more of ROMNEY’S statement, THAN THAT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. FORFUCKSAKE! He’s only a CANDIDATE, he’s NOT THE POTUS!!!

Yesterday, as I was driving home, I was listening to our local progressive station, which has Ian Masters on from 5 – 6, and he was talking to some female editor from Alternet, and they were both saying that “there is just no outrage on the Left regarding Mittiot not releasing his tax returns, etc… and how Dems just roll over and there is no outrage – and they were ***purposefully*** equating everyone on the Left – all citizens – with THE MEDIA. As if THE MEDIA represents THE US POPULATION. And how we’ve “all given up….”

I wanted to pull my damn hair out!

I don’t mean to sound insane, but I feel as if I’m witnessing a well thought out, media-orchestrated psyop. Then with the coverage this morning of Aurora, and how much more coverage Romney is being given that THE PRESIDENT, as if Romney already has the job, and should just take over already – WHEN IS THE WHITE RABBIT GOING TO RUN BY????

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON??????

It is sad particularly for the people on camera trying to maintain their composure I’m having a tough time myself holding back the tears. I so glad we a Comforter-in-Chief in our President. President Obama always manages to strike the right comforting balance. He is such a compassionate person.

I notice Romney echoed President Obama words when he say would hold Sasha and Malia tonight. Romney is a copy cat.

Mitt Romney is a serial plagiarist…

Not a single original thought, word or action can be squeezed from this soulless, hollow, callous, calculating narcissist when it comes to honest, positive humanity…

Which is why his “statement” was just a barely disguised rip off of President Obama’s authentic and from the heart speech from 30 minutes earlier…
