OPEN LETTER TO SEN. REID. Do Not give up your source until Mitt produces his taxes. As Mitt stalls, more pPl know abt his tricks. #IgnoreMSM
Ouch! There goes that reflex clicking again! Sorry guys!
Here’s the real TOD greeting –
G’Morning Ms Chips! G’Morning TODville! It’s a new day and I’m feeling Goood!
Go Obama/Biden! WE. ARE …the answer!
G’morning CHIPS, TOD, everyone, and congratulations VC for #1! Happy Monday, and I’m fired up :)
TY Hf, and a special Good Morning to you! It’s such a nice, warm, wonderful, fired-up feeling to know that you are on the right side of the political divide along with so many, many other sensible people, isn’t it?
BTW, my first click was actually an ‘Africa’ original that I was modifying to retweet.
Note that you are already assuming he has only *one* source, because he only named one. That’s not how the game is played.
TM, you have a point re one source comment, but * I* don’t want to play games at all. My position is that it’s irrelevant to the main issue who Harry’s source/sources is/are. Yes, in general a source can lend credibility to a position, but in Mitt’s case there is little doubt something fishy is involved and the source argument is only Media red herring. The problem with U S media in my opinion is that they lack insight, depth, integrity, intuitiveness, investigative skills …I could go on… in short, any real understanding of their true role (in a democracy). They never seem to highlight the main point on any given issue with any degree of competence. Pshaw on the media and their great expressed desire for ‘sources’. To MSM I say, ‘Go do your own research.. and try to research the right person/subject.’
POTUS will be in my neighborhood today! Happy girl!
GM, CT, are you going to see him in person, or wave to AF1 as it passes by? Whatever option chosen , do say ‘hello’ for me. ;)
I will :-D.
 Hard icing on my cake! TY ;)
Good Morning! It’s a great day in human history! Let’s keep bending the arch of history and do what we can to keep President Obama! Have a beautiful day!
Morning Dudette! You planning on taking me with you on your first Mars trip so you can teach me dance steps, and how to ‘party? It’ll probably be easier for me to accomplish such a feat THERE. Have a wonderful day yourself!
I can’t wait till Snark is back in biz. Her counterpart is no longer tolerable, tweeting about President Obama’s congrats re. the Mars landing and then following that up with ‘no news of a fundraiser there (Mars)—–yet’. No similar obsessions with Willard’s fundraisers.
Yes, I saw that tweet and I remind him that the Martians want four more years AND Mitt’s returns released.
Where is Snark? I thought it was a man….
I’ve actually been wondering if Mark’s become ‘bolder’ because his lawyers have somehow silenced Snark’s free speech. I just have this feeling that Snark was doing too good a job showing up Mark’s weakness as a reporter so they found a way to stop him/her from using his picture and the similarity of names. I’m hoping Snark will copyright a new name, create his/her own snarky picture, and return to do his/her signature take down.
Pulling this from the previous thread:
Lots of good stuff in the bill the PBO is going to sign later this morning. The Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012. Check it out here: http://veterans.house.gov/hr1627
A few standout provisions that I particularly like:
Title 3: Homeless
Too many veterans are falling into homelessness due to today’s economy. This legislation authorizes grant funds for new construction of transitional housing for those veterans, as well as matches funds from private and public sources for such housing, with annual reports from VA due to Congress. The bill would also extend fully funded programs aiding homeless veterans, including homeless veterans’ reintegration programs and support services for very low-income veteran families, among others. (Section 301, 305, S. 914, Sen. Mark Begich)
Title 4: Education
Survivors and Dependents
Under H.R. 1627, survivors and dependents would be allowed to use up to 81 months of VA educational assistance.
Title 6: Memorial, Burial, and Cemeteries
Honoring the Fallen
While ensuring the freedom to protest, but protecting the rights and the honor of the families of the fallen, those wishing to protest military funerals, or at national cemeteries, shall be subject to restrictions, and if violated, protesters shall be punished by criminal or civil action.
Title 7: Other
In the past two years, thousands of servicemembers and their families have been evicted from their homes or foreclosed upon due to errant banking practices. Therefore, under SCRA (the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act), the period of time that banks will be prohibited from foreclosure/eviction of servicemembers due to late payments will be extended from 9 to 12 months after military service.
Good Morning from Japan!!
Good morning from San Francisco!!
Morning, Chips, morning Y’all!
Robney raised 103 million this month! I hope we had similar numbers, don’t know why we wait so long to announce our numbers? Maybe it’s because we wait for the money to trickle in to count?
So you are still believing Romney’s LIES about his fundraising? When has Romney ever told the truth about ANYTHING where money is concerned?
Yup. And if it were true, all that money ain’t helping mittbot’s numbers.
The RNC joint committe with MCCAIN in 08 raised almost 600 million, and until October, was close to the Presidents joint numbers. The President them had a 150 million dollar October and totaled 750 million combined.
The Conservatives scream that McCain took public financing and only received 90 million for the election, and that is why he lost.
As you can see, it’s the Joint fundraising that matters.
So, the RNC in 2012, combined their top 5 committees for fundraising into the Robney Camp. This top down approach, allows the Robney camp bragging rights on how much they made each month, but they are still responsible for those other committees.
This is what is happening, and I am not stupid, I figured it out!
you are a hoot, jovie.
Jovie…don’t get hung up on the numbers. When you compare apples to apples (Romney V Obama) and not their camps…then we win. Further, only 25 mil or so was from small donors (250 or less). So unless money can physically get up and vote on the 6th of November- I ain’t worried. Third, Romney is being defined already and him running a billion commercials in the fall won’t change that perception.
I agree with all those points, and we are ahead.
Apparently (though he has the years) the British Invasion went right over his head: “Money can’t buy you love”.
Chips Chica, that swagger on the President doesn’t look a day older than it did last time! The Pres is aging sooo gracefully. ;) ;) Thanks for this uplifting Monday morning visual.
Vc, the Georgia Democratic Party was (is) selling that image as a button. I bought four and wore one when I was manning our Obama booth at the county fair. Everyone’s eyes immediately latched on to my button and I ended up giving away two of my treasures and directing buyers to the Georgia Dems. This image is a winner!
Definitely a winner! BTW, JG, thank you for noticing that my name was in the 4th button and putting it aside for me. You can hang onto it till the Inauguration, though I promise not to mind if you need to lend it out to cement another vote or two before then. ;) ;)
AFL-CIO SUPER-PAC GETS BEHIND REID IN ROMNEY TAX FIGHT:
The AFL-CIO’s super-PAC plans to back Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) call for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to release more of his tax returns. …
“Our members pay their fair share every day — Romney could learn what it really means to support your country from their leadership example. If Romney paid taxes, then let’s see it. If he didn’t, then he doesn’t meet the leadership qualities required by our members to win Nevada in November,” Thompson said in the statement. … http://thehill.com/business-a-lobbying/242285-afl-cio-super-pac-gets-behind-reid-in-romney-tax-fight

Um..”ladies of the press”? Is this Victorian England? Aside from Ann Romney’s money, what’s to envy about a plump 60ish grandmother with no fashion sense who has to sleep with Willard. If she wasn’t such a arrogant twit, I’d pity the woman.
Not that this ‘announcer’ is of any consequence, but did you notice that after all her talk about ‘ladies’ she ended with something like, ‘Come on GIRLS, play fair’. She definitely strikes me as delusional, befuddled and IRRELEVANT.

NASA RECOVERY ACT FUNDING – $1 BILLION
Overview of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act)
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th, 2009. It is an unprecedented effort to jumpstart our economy, create or save millions of jobs, and put a down payment on addressing long-neglected challenges so our country can thrive in the 21st century. The Act is an extraordinary response to a crisis unlike any since the Great Depression, and includes measures to modernize our nation’s infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need.
Implementing the Recovery Act at NASA
Among the key purposes of the Recovery Act are preserving and creating jobs, spurring technological advances in science and health, and promoting economic recovery. NASA has an important role to play in achieving these purposes through the program and facilities investments it will make with Recovery Act funding. As NASA develops and begins implementing its plans, this site will be one of the Agency’s primary ways for communicating NASA’s plans, progress, and results.
The President and Congress are committed to spending these recovery dollars with an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability so Americans know where their tax dollars are going and how they are being spent. Meeting these commitments will require sustained focus by all of us at NASA, particularly in planning, awarding, managing, and overseeing the contracts and grants through which the objectives of the Recovery Act will be achieved.
Recovery.gov is a website that empowers Citizens to hold the government accountable for every dollar spent. NASA, along with every other federal agency, is required to provide spending and performance data on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and as required basis.
We invite you to visit us regularly and hear about the exciting work NASA is doing to contribute to America’s economic recovery.
Agency Plans and Reports
By the end of April, NASA will be working with Congress and the Office of Management and Budget to finalize its Recovery plans. As these plans are approved and they are implemented, we will be posting the latest Agency Plans and Reports here.

The Administration’s priorities entrust NASA with $1 billion for Recovery investments. Among the purposes for these funds indicated by Congress include:

I warned every that August is going to be rough! Congress is back home peddling their scare tactics, the nuts come out to spread the crazy, the MSM is on the hunt for high drama and the pollsters are getting paid to slice and dice every which way to produce a horse race. It’s not rocket science!

CROCODILE TEARS FROM GOP & MEDIA ABOUT UNNAMED SOURCES.
The ‘Missing Evidence’ In Romney’s Tax Records
BY Joe Conason – August 6th, 2012
Many of Reid’s critics work for news outlets that rely on unnamed sources every day, of course, publishing assertions that range from the mundane to the outlandish. It is hard to see why an unnamed source quoted by a daily newspaper or a monthly magazine – or hidden behind a screen in a TV studio – is more credible than a person whispering in the ear of a United States Senator.
There is a legal doctrine that applies to Romney’s current behavior, as Indiana attorney John Sullivan points out – and it doesn’t place the burden of proof on Reid:
At law, if a person in control of evidence refuses to produce the evidence, then the jury is instructed that there is a presumption that the evidence would be against the party failing to produce. It is called the “Missing Evidence” instruction.
The missing evidence is in Romney’s grasp, yet he insists that he will never produce it. Does anyone need instruction from a judge to make the correct inference?
Do you have the link, Ladyhawke? Thanks:)
Oops…. here ya go DF.
The legal doctrine only applies in a court case. No jury here — except, ultimately, the voters.

23 YEARS OF TAX RETURNS TO JOHN MCCAIN, 1 YEAR TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE
Romney vs. Reid, Round II
By Steve Benen
The underlying GOP strategy here makes sense — if they can discredit Reid’s accusation, they hope it will effectively end the demands for more disclosure. But that’s silly. The need for scrutiny of Romney’s tax returns was obvious long before Reid piped up last week, and is based on a series of legitimate questions, including controversies surrounding Romney’s Bain background, offshore finances, controversial investments, unanswered questions about his individual retirement account that somehow ended up with more than $100 million, and claims about his business that contradict SEC filings.
And taking a step back, by even engaging Reid, and watching Romney punch down at the senator, Republicans are only helping keep the larger story alive — Romney’s secret tax returns remain the campaign story on the front burner, taking the focus away from everything else the GOP wants to talk about.
Put it this way: both sides were on the offensive over the weekend, but only one side is smiling.
One INCOMPLETE year to taxpayers.
Yeah, Not Even one year…just the part willard isn’t Scared of.

201,000 of the people who gave in July were entirely new donors who didn't give before in this election cycle or in 2008.— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) August 06, 2012
This is FANTASTIC. Can Romney boast this? NO he can’t. His donors are mostly multi-millionaires and billionaires, including a very dysfunctional gambler and fraud named Adelson.
.@barackobama campaign released small donor numbers at 760K. So .@mittromney will do the same ? No, he can't because he's got only fatcats.— (@amk4obama) August 06, 2012
Thanks amk, RT’D :)
Apparently, only a forth of Romney/RNC donations were from small donors *$250 or less). The rest were large donations.
Only about one quarter of their haul, $25.7 Million, came from small donations under $250, which made up 94 percent of all donations received.
Republicans Watch Their Harry Reid is a Liar Strategy Crash and Burn
By: Jason Easley
Republicans are learning the hard way that calling Harry Reid a liar is a strategy that is blowing up in their faces.
Lindsey Graham spent 60 seconds calling Harry Reid a liar. Robert Gibbs spent 4:20 answering Candy Crowley’s questions about Harry Reid by talking about Mitt Romney’s foreign bank accounts and his tax returns.
Republicans are actually making things worse for Mitt Romney by calling Harry Reid a liar. When Republicans talk about Harry Reid, they are also talking about Romney’s tax returns, and Mitt Romney has put his party in a no win position.
There are a dozen different ways that Republicans could address Reid’s accusations, and they have chosen the worst option. The liar, liar pants on fire strategy is only effective if it can be proven that Reid is lying. Since Romney won’t provide the proof, Republicans have given the Democrats the gift of an endless loop of conversation about Romney’s tax returns.
What is so different this election cycle because of the cluelessness of the Romney campaign: what would have been considered ‘defensive’ in 2008 is just a wave of opportunities for PBO to turn the spotlight right back on Romney. Every time the Repubs call Harry Reid a liar is an opportunity for us to remind the American people that Mitt Romney has lied in the past about his tax returns, refuses to allow the American people to decide for themselves about his qualifications to be President since he bases his entire candidacy on the kind of business that he ran.
Reporting back on last month's fundraising numbers: In July, 761,000 people donated to raise over $75 million for this campaign. Thank you.— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) August 06, 2012
This is for jovie.
761,000 is a great number and $75 million is a strong month. We can’t let thoughts of the R-money millions depress us. Everyone of those contributions is a vote for PBO and a lot of people are still waking up to the fact that this is a presidential election year.
Yes, jackie. 75 million from small donors is absolutely fantastic and the best part is that new donors coming on board.
Yes, We Can.
Is that 75M total, including all donors and combined with DNC?
That’s what I was wondering.
Hmmm, in re-reading, it appears they are saying they raised a little over 75 Million.
605 million combined. We should break our own record in 08!
At this rate (which is only likely to increase), you betcha. Also. Too.

Don’t get me wrong…I AM NOT A ROBME FAN…BUT he is speaking to the overflow crowd and there are people in front of him. We don’t have to be misleading LIKE THEM. If we are just making fun of him then….CARRY ON!
Where was this, and when? Overflow from a crowd of how many? If this were the President, the overflow people would be right up by him if possible.
It was his Colorado campaign three days ago. I googled “Romney Colorado Campaign” and there were flicker pictures in which it showed him on the picnic tables and the people in front of him. I was just curious because no one is really talking about the crowds or lack of crowds he actually gets. The Colorado event they said was an indoor event and there were 5,000 people inside and there was an overflow of people which he addressed before going inside. There were also crowds that were only 400 people and then the one where he only had 1200 people in that stadium (I think it was Michigan). They also had pictures of him in Poland which looked photo shopped but it looked like the largest crowd I’ve ever seen…but then that was POLAND.
If were making fun of Robme, I am OK with that too.

This is an example of how he is obsessed with taxes. When he said he paid a lot of taxes in the 10 year period he did not say income taxes.
Yes, I noticed that he left off a qualifier. He’s pure scum.
Plus it would seem from the person who is evolving that if he paid $100 in taxes, income or otherwise, Mitt would consider that ‘he paid a lot of taxes’. The guy is a freeloader and a user, just a rich one who considers being deviously greedy synonymous with being smart.
I believe the assessor in San Diego County is most likely a republican and they are the ones that approve these revaluations. In the L.A. County the Assessor was investigated and found that he was lower the value of numerous rich peoples property in return for contributing to his political coffers. I hope the L.A. Times continue to dig deep to see if there was quid pro quo between Robme and the S.D. Assessor.
Wow, that is a major scandal. Holy crap.
You hire a lawyer who makes a case that the property was not livable for the first seven months. A smart (expensive) lawyer can often get your property taxes reduced.

A message from John Soltz of VoteVets:
Interestingly, the press reported that 15 military and veterans’ groups supported Romney’s position. That isn’t the case. Those groups actually petitioned the court to be involved in the case, because of their concerns that the end result, whatever it was, might hurt troops’ ability to vote. On Friday, the Obama Campaign actually signed a brief to the court that backed the petition of those groups – welcoming them into the case, because the Obama campaign says it wants to ensure that military voters aren’t kept from early voting. Now that we know the truth, I hope those groups will come out and fully support the President’s campaign, in court. Because if they don’t, the change in law will hurt so many who have served in uniform.

People power trumps money power.
If I remember correctly, Romney’s initial number is always too high, and the President’s is always lowballed.
Yesterday’s nutball shooter was a neo-Nazi white supremacist, headed white power band End Apathy—–hate destroyed him.
And hate also destroyed at least 7 other innocent people (and their families), unfortunately. This kind of hate must not be enabled, excused or ignored. The media has been doing a fine job of all three. We need to directly and aggressively address this media perpetuated justification for hateful anger before something MUCH worse happens.

What Romney’s Taxes Tell Us About The Tax Code
By Mark Schmitt
Let’s start with the possibility that Romney paid a tax rate much lower than 13.9 in some years, or something in the low single digits. Graetz says that’s “plausible” but might be “perfectly legal.” If he did, he would probably have to show real losses on his investments, which would offset his gains. These might be “capital loss carryovers” from previous years. He had a $4.5 million carryover on his 2010 taxes, from which NYU professor Dan Shaviro inferred that he probably had more losses than gains on his 2009 return – that is, he had to “carryover” the extra losses to the next year. If so, it’s possible that he paid very little in taxes in 2009 – a bad year on the stock market – because he lost money. It’s hard to see that as a problem, though. If Romney really lost money, he had no gains to pay taxes on.
But this also reveals another way in which the tax code benefits those whose income comes from investments: they are able to move their gains and losses around and use the losses when they need them to offset their gains. Most of us can’t do that. With a couple of exceptions, as our income goes up and down, we can’t move deductions that we couldn’t use in one year and carry them over to another. We can’t use our bad years to offset the good ones.
And then there’s that massive Individual Retirement Account, valued in his financial disclosure at between $20 million and $101 million. How does that happen?

HARRY REID SPOX: Republicans Are ‘ A Bunch Of Cowards’ For Ignoring Mitt Romney’s Tax Returns
By Brett LoGiurato
David Krone, Reid’s chief of staff, said in an interview with Politico Sunday night that Republicans were “cowards” for avoiding the issue. Here’s Krone:
“They’re a bunch of cowards, and they’re avoiding the issue. Lindsey Graham, Reince Priebus — they’re a bunch of henchmen for Romney, and they’re all reading off the same talking points. They couldn’t hold a candle to Harry Reid.”
Krone added: “What Harry Reid said is the fact of what he was told. To turn it around, all their childish rants this weekend about calling Reid a ‘liar’ and all that, it just shows you how scared they are that Harry Reid was telling the truth.”
Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee Chair Priebus appeared on “Fox & Friends” this morning and said he would “triple-down” on comments he first made Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” when he called Reid a “dirty liar.” Here’s what Priebus had to say, via Politico:
Dead on analysis of willard’s henchmen from David Krone, Harry Reid’s spokesman.
Who does Mitt pal around with?
For those who’ve forgotten, Mourdock has positioned himself as one of the most extreme statewide candidates in the country. Two weeks ago, the guy equated the successful rescue of the American automotive industry with slavery. On health care, Mourdock has said he’s entirely comfortable with employers denying coverage to employees with cancer in order to “keep their health care costs down.” On entitlements, he supports deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare, both of which he considers unconstitutional.

“ONE CANDIDATE LIED AND GOT CAUGHT. FULL STOP”
Romney gets caught lying about Obama, military voters
This is as loathsome a lie as Romney has told all year — and given his record, that’s not an easy threshold to meet.
It’s important to realize that this isn’t a matter of opinion. CNN’s headline over the weekend said, “Romney campaign jabs at Obama over voting rights suit.” The headline on the Politico homepage yesterday said, “Obama, Mitt camps spar on military voting.”
No. Wrong. No one is “jabbing” or “sparring.” One candidate lied and got caught. Full stop.
Yesterday, the Republican presidential campaign said the Obama campaign’s lawsuit calling for equal voting rights is “despicable.”
It’s as if words no longer have any meaning, and Americans politics has become so blisteringly stupid, candidates believe they can say literally anything and get away with it.
Well. Romney has been getting away with lying for years with seemingly little consequence, so I guess one could say they felt confident their proven etch-a-sketch strategy would work in 2012.
‘Mitt Romney “promised in 2007 he would shed any investments that conflicted with Republican positions on hot-button domestic and foreign policy issues. But Romney’s family trusts kept some of those holdings and repeatedly bought new ones until 2010, when they were finally sold off for more than $3 million,” according to the Associated Press;

Wasssup TODdies!!!! Great getting up here in O town! I’m enjoying the sputtering and harumphing going on by the Pub surrogates. They are looking pretty ridiculous. Moanin Joke had Mike Allen from Political on to exclaim with the excitement of somebody who discovered gold, that PBO hates Rmoney and that’s what is driving him. This of course was a story written by a different Political writer, who talked to somebody who said that the proof is that PBO would play spades with Reggie Love to get his competitive juices flowing (unlike Clinton who played hearts). He said PBO also played pool and golf competitively and that meant that he absolutely hates Rmoney. I was ROTBLMBO!!!! The guys around the table were trying their best to keep a straight face and not acknowledge that they’ve gone off the rails if this is what it’s come to. Even Mark Halprin looked uncomfortable.
My political take today is in addition to the tax paid or not, which would have all been legal, there is something more foreboding in those returns that may impact his kids and their returns, Anne’s holdings, and the Mormon church.
They got nothing at this point.

I’m not a fan of Huff’Puff as most of you know, but I think this report is probably accurate because it’s Nancy Pelosi who is actually quoted directly in this article:
HEADLINE: “Nancy Pelosi: ‘It Is A Fact’ That Somebody Told Harry Reid About Romney Not Paying Taxes”
// …”Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact,” Pelosi told The Huffington Post in a Sunday interview. “Whether he did or not can easily be disposed of: Mitt Romney can release his tax returns and show whether he paid taxes.”… “Harry Reid is a person who is, as we know, A, is a fighter, B, he wouldn’t say this unless it was true that somebody told him that.”
The California Democrat said she doesn’t relish watching Romney squirm over his tax returns because she’s more interested in focusing on the fact that his tax plan is “so harmful to the middle class.” Still, she said, the two issues are connected. “The salience of what Harry Reid is saying is related” to the contents of Romney’s tax plan, Pelosi said. “Here’s a guy who wants you to pay more when I think, ‘I’ meaning Harry Reid, somebody told me he hasn’t even paid his taxes. But he wants you to pay more to underwrite tax cuts for the wealthy.. It’s like a double doozy. //

Romney Outraged by Expanded Voting

The whole episode is tailor made to expose how corrupted the press corps is. The entire thing is a demonstrable lie, and all in the service of keeping vote participation as low as possible. In other words, a Fehrnstrom Special. Very curious to see whether the biggs report it as such.
I used to listen every time but now I can barely stand it. The entire room is full of “WHY don’t you just do what the GOP tell you to do?” whiners. UGH>
Jay is at the podium now.
Awesome. Jay just let Ed Henry know that Mitt Romney’s tax returns issues started during the Republican primary.
With just 24 hours after the shooting, Dan Lothian of CNN wants to know what President Obama is going to do to educate the American people about the Sikh community. Jay aptly pointed out that Dan would not have asked him that question last Friday. So his question is clearly making assumptions about an event that happened less than 24 hours ago. Unbelievable.
It just makes your head hurt to see these crackerjack reporters in the White House Press Corps. Also, there have been numerous questions about Harry Reid and the propriety of anonymous sources. Imagine that? The jackals want to know if PBO condones Harry Reid’s remarks. Jay repeats over and over again PBO’s contention that TRANSPARENCY is the order of the day as it relates to tax returns. Jay directs the jackals to Harry Reid for details on HIS comments. Harry has already demonstrated that he can speak for himself. Ed Henry has a smirk on his face throughout the briefing. He’s like a cheshire cat in the front row seats. Unnerving and creepy.
Why don’t Dan Lothian get off his behind and educate the American people.

What John McCain Didn’t Say when Defending Mitt Romney over Taxes (VIDEO)
During the 2008 Republican veepstakes, John McCain received twenty-three (23) years of Mitt Romney’s tax returns, so he is privy to lots of salient details. So here’s what McCain did not say:
Not once during the interview with Anderson Cooper did McCain ever call Harry Reid a liar.
Not once did McCain say “hey, I saw those returns, and I can tell you that Mitt did pay taxes every year.”
Not once did McCain even suggest that “Reid was making things up.”
He never even offered a McCain-style “where do they come up with this crap!”

PAUL RYAN IS A CELEBRATED BUDGET WONK, BUT HIS NUMBERS DON’T ADD UP
Jared Bernstein: Paul Ryan’s Budget Numbers Don’t Add Up
By Susie Madrak
Economist Jared Bernstein beautifully eviscerates the intellectual foundation (or lack thereof) for Paul Ryan’s economic policies — which is really not difficult, even for bloggers. The problem? The members of the media who are still too damn lazy to do the math, and instead proclaim him as a real policy wonk. (Fortunately, Ryan Lizza is not one of those stupid journalists.)
The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza provides a profile of Rep Paul Ryan, with a rich discussion of his vision for limited government.
It’s a good read, but it left me thinking about what it is that troubles me most about Rep Ryan, an earnest guy who’s come a long way and influenced a lot of people at a relatively young age. The problem is his numbers don’t add up. And that’s a particularly big problem for a celebrated budget wonk.
Go read the whole thing. He also points out how the same holes appear in Mitt Romney’s economic proposals, too.
NOTE: Jared Bernstein is just terrific in this interview on PBS. The Cato Institute guy got trounced. All he had was tired old GOP talking points.

FBI seeking another person of interest in yesterday’s mass shooting, and of course CNN in their infinite wisdom cut off the press conference before they got to that information. This new person is on tape at the scene “acting suspiciously”. I see the shooter has been on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s radar for 12 years, since he began appearing with these neo-Nazi, white supremacist bands. Photos of their practice sessions show Nazi and Confederate flags in the background, lyrics talk about death to Jews and African Americans, but not in those exact same words. Militias recruit from these hate-filled bands. Those who instill fear and hate of others in our media and in politics, and those who look the other way while it is happening, share in the guilt of these horrific shootings.

Yes, and seriously, it took me a while to even compose this tweet. Because out of respect for myself and my Twitter followers, I had to refrain from tweeting what I really wanted to say to Mr. Knoller.
This guy has seriously crossed the line. For him to imply that tax avoidance was President Obama’s sole motivation for charitable giving is beyond vile. It’s utterly wretched.
omg! i first thought was from snark knoller, but alas, it’s not. that’s perhaps the ultimate example of false equivalency that the media peddles day in and day out. mittbot stashes hundreds of millions for decades and still trying to keep it all secret…president obama donates prize money to charity…see, they’re the same according mark knoller! in a normal world, that one alone would be grounds for firing, in my opinion. just wow.

the problem is that i think he’s doing exactly what his boss wants him to do. that’s why knoller has had that job so long. they’re hired to be propagandists for the super rich now…journalism left the equation decades ago.

I tweeted something similar. How does he keep his job at CBS as a journalist when opining (as fact) that PBO donated money only to dodge taxes?
Who was the AA journalist who got fired for a lot less — Joe Williams?
Mark Knoller is worth dog doo.
That’s an insult to dog doo.
Exactly why isn’t tMark Knoller being paid by Romney or the RNC? Or has CBS joined FOX as the propaganda arm of the Republican party?
Mitt Romney is a special case. As Kevin Drum says, “something about the presidency seems to have brought out the worst in him. His ambition is so naked, his beliefs so malleable, his pandering so relentless, and his scruples so obviously expendable, that everyone who spars with him comes away feeling like they need to take a shower.” The fact that Romney hasn’t given us much reason to like him means there’s nothing to counteract the negative reaction we have to the awful person he is as a politician. Different candidates are able to do this in different ways. With Barack Obama it was his inspiring personal story, with McCain it was the war record, with George W. Bush it was his easy-going, friendly manner. The result is that even when we see them engaging in some campaign hardball, we’re able to tell ourselves, “OK, I didn’t like that much, but I realize that he’s basically a good guy.”
Romney doesn’t have an inspiring story (feel your heart flutter at “Son of wealth and privilege grows up to obtain even more wealth and privilege”), and his manner is, shall we say, strained. There have been occasional attempts to use his wife Ann and sons, the interchangeable Tagg-Craig-Turf-Gorp or whatever their names are, to humanize Romney, but it never seems to get very far. So when he makes up things about his opponent or refuses to tell us how much money he has or what he does with it, there’s nothing on the other side of the character scale to counteract the impression voters are left with. The person he is as a candidate is all anyone can see. And that person is pretty repellent. So it’s no surprise that his favorability ratings are extremely low and probably going nowhere but down.
Thanks DF. Good read from Paul. The post below is a perfect bookend to your post. It’s old but I’ve posted it many times. I still marvel at the deep dislike of Mitt Romney by his opponents and their staffs in 2008. It’s very instructive. They were especially alarmed by his hypocrisy and essential phoniness. It was intense. There’s just something about Willard that’s just distasteful.
The ‘I Hate Romney’ Club – By Ana Marie Cox
“The staffer says that campaigns would share opposition research on Romney and offer each other tips on how best to undermine him: “Like, ‘Hey, I saw you hit Mitt on immigration — have you thought about going after him on this issue?” In some cases, the attitude even extends to the top of the campaigns.”
Methinks someone “shared” that tax information!
Exactly. That’s why the GOP is frantically playing look at that shiny object. And the shiny object is HARRY REID. They are trapped because the more they talk about Harry Reid the more we have to talk about the reason they are going after Harry Reid. They just don’t get it. Mitt Romney’s problem with tax returns STARTED DURING THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY. In fact, we all know that Mitt Romney has had issues with tax returns from when he ran for governor. The tax returns issue is not going away.
Trig, Trip, Tagg notice any similarity of naming in the Romney clan and the Palin clan?
Indeed. Trig, Trip, Tagg, TRASH.
I remember reading a few weeks ago that all but one of his sons didn’t want him to run again because it was an inconvenience to their pampered lives (my paraphrase). They felt it was just so much trouble to do it the first time, they didn’t want to be bothered with it this time. They did say it was a disruption, or some similar word.
But Mitt said that their great patriotic contribution, over serving their country as the able-bodied young men that they are, was to get him elected.
The hubris of these pampered jackasses is beyond the pale.
The Irony which is totally above their heads is that it WOULD HAVE BEEN SUPER PATRIOTIC FOR WILLARD NOT TO RUN.
Wonder if PObama will crave a shower after the debates? Or will he just dust the fallout off his shoulders?

Statement by the President on Curiosity Landing on Mars
Tonight, on the planet Mars, the United States of America made history.
The successful landing of Curiosity – the most sophisticated roving laboratory ever to land on another planet – marks an unprecedented feat of technology that will stand as a point of national pride far into the future. It proves that even the longest of odds are no match for our unique blend of ingenuity and determination.
Tonight’s success, delivered by NASA, parallels our major steps forward towards a vision for a new partnership with American companies to send American astronauts into space on American spacecraft. That partnership will save taxpayer dollars while allowing NASA to do what it has always done best – push the very boundaries of human knowledge. And tonight’s success reminds us that our preeminence – not just in space, but here on Earth – depends on continuing to invest wisely in the innovation, technology, and basic research that has always made our economy the envy of the world.
I congratulate and thank all the men and women of NASA who made this remarkable accomplishment a reality – and I eagerly await what Curiosity has yet to discover.

Mark Knoller don’t know how to stop being a scumbag, it’s in his DNA,along with jackass, GOP idiot.
Thank YOU, UT:) Good job
Thanks ut! Was just about to post your tweet. Mark Knoller is a disgusting human being. And I’m being very generous here.
OMG, this infuriates me. Gifting money is not the same as sheltering it in the Cayman Islands.
The Press conference directly after the Mars landing of the Curiosity Rover
First speaker is NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden, Jr. He is followed by Dr. John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
Interesting…..funny that I read not long ago that Bain also had many Mormons in high positions in the company…….the plot thickens…
The article above states that Harry R is a top level mormon, yet, as it should be, we hardly hear much about his religion. I can’t imagine why I assumed he was just an ‘ordinary’ mormon though.
/…T]he source coming to Harry Reid for these revelations adds a level of intrigue. Reid just happens to be the highest-ranking member of the Mormon Church in the history of this nation.
Male heads of family are all Bishops in the Mormon church. So they all sound “high up.” But the above statement is not correct. Harry Reid holds the highest *governmental* position of any mormon. The only positions that are higher than US Senator are President and Vice President.
Thanks for the clarification, VSW. It makes more sense to me now.
Obama’s ‘The Choice’ Again Tops Online Chart
// The Obama campaign’s “The Choice” ad stayed at the top of the online ad chart this week, as only three new ads crept into the top 10, based on data from Visible Measures.
“The Choice” registered 755,000 views in the week ended Sunday, down from 1.3 million last week but still well ahead of the rest of the field. The spot features President Barack Obama speaking directly to the camera and pledging his support for the middle class, and criticizing Mitt Romney‘s policies. //

I’m not even going to say a word. Not a word. h/t to PoliticalCarnival.
You don’t have to say a word. I hope these losers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and that the video is entered into evidence against them. Bunch of hate-filled idiots!

Again! New Romney video deceptively edits audio of Obama speech, and conceals that an edit was made: wapo.st/Qy8MRI— Greg Sargent (@ThePlumLineGS) August 06, 2012
