Good ‘Morning After’, Chips Chica!
Happy Tuesday Morning, all TODobots! Just by opening the door to TODville I can feel the energy bubbling inside, much like I see it bubbling in the audiences listening to FLOTUS, VPJoe, AND POTUS!
Phew! Relief! Now I can go feed and drop off my little guests, THEN come back and hang out in TODville! I thought I’d have to leave before CC ‘woke up’. Have a great morning, you all!

First lady Michelle Obama shared a laugh with U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas on “The Tonight Show” on Monday.
Asked how she celebrated her success at the Olympics, Douglas told host Jay Leno, “After the competition, I splurged on an Egg McMuffin at McDonald’s.”
“Don’t encourage him,” the first lady, who has urged Leno to eat better in the past, said.
“You’re setting me back, Gabby,” Obama joked.
“Sorry!” Douglas exclaimed.
During the taped appearance, which airs tonight, Obama also chatted about landing on the “Kiss Cam” with the president last month.
“You turned him down! What happened?” Leno asked, after showing footage from the basketball game.
“No! I did not!” Obama said, explaining that she had just arrived and didn’t realize that they were supposed to kiss.
The first lady said that their daughter Malia filled them in.
“She was just disgusted with us,” Obama said. “She said, ‘Why didn’t you kiss?’ And I was like, ‘Kiss what? What are you talking about?’ She’s like, ‘You were on the ‘Kiss Cam.’ You were supposed to kiss.’”
The Obamas did end up smooching on the Jumbotron when they got a second chance later on.
Word is, you had a birthday yesterday? Sorry I missed it. Happy Birthday! Birthdays should last a week anyway.
Ah, thank you 57andFemale – I was indeed 19 yesterday. Ish. Thanks!
Happy belated birthday from me too!
You’re getting younger by the day, Chips! I was on late last night(Hawaii Time) and saw it was your birthday, too..and left this message.
“I know you wouldn’t kid about a thing like that, Chips..but, when I saw this my first thought was “you’re kidding!”.. It’s my birthday too! August 13th, right? PObama was in Iowa surprising State Fair Goers and Michelle was on Leno! And, I hiked Sleeping Giant to the very top of his NOSE with my son! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, CHIPSTARRRR THE LEO!”
It means a lot to me that we share a birthday, Chips. Alfred Hitchcock and Don Ho, too!
LOVED the FLOTUS on Leno. I had the biggest grin on my face the entire time she was on the show. Love her!
A very happy 364 days until your next birthday.
Thank you LaDLove!
G’morning Chips, TOD, lurkers, everyone, and congratulations Vcprez on #1!!
A day late and a dollar short. Happy Birthday Chips!
FLOTUS was great last night.
Have a great day all you TOD.
Good morning everyone. Just love our wonderful First Family. May God continue to protect them as they travel around the country. Happy belated birthday Chips. We appreciate everything you do to keep us from losing our minds. Thank you so much.
The president warned during a campaign rally in Pueblo, Colo., last week that the failure of Congress to extend tax breaks for wind energy manufacturers could cost “37,000 American jobs, including potentially hundreds of jobs right here.”
Now, the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturing plant in Pueblo is making good on the threat. Vestas has announced it will lay off nearly 100 of its 450 workers in Pueblo, according to the Denver Post.
“Uncertainty over whether Congress will extend the Production Tax Credit is leading to a general market slowdown for wind power manufacturers and developers throughout the U.S.,” Vestas said in a statement, the Post reported.
The tax credit is scheduled to expire at the end of the year and Obama has been pushing for its extension for months but Congress has not renewed it. The president pummeled Mitt Romney for opposing its extension during the stop in Pueblo last week, and he is expected to hit the point again Tuesday in Iowa.
Pssst- Robney does not care, they get money from the Koch brothers who is against the wind industry. The Kochs have been against Cape Wind from the get go!
The entire midwest is now full of wind farms—–many jobs and clean energy on the line—–a political plus for President Obama and another dumb opposition by Willard & Co.
Great toons chips. GM folks.
Morning amk, adored those toons, pure genius!
Morning chips. So how is the b’day gal ? Had fun y’day ?
Apart from the bumpy plane trip, amk, it was a mighty fine day. One problem, though: I’ve been using my laptop for the last month, so getting used to the mouse again is severely weird. Why do I keep pushing the mouse to the right so that it falls off my desk? If you say “that’s wimmin” I’ll give you a clip ’round the ear.
wireless laser mouse. They come in nice colors too for wimmin.
I use this big ass wireless one that can be wired if the battery runs out and can be used for recharging too. Works on glass tops too.
On second thoughts, mebbe it’s not for wimmin.
“They come in nice colors too for wimmin.”
You’re just outrageous.
I’ll have you know, Mister, that’s very almost my exact mouse – a Logitech wireless thingie, except mine isn’t quite as swervy as that. It’s working fine, it’s just me that’s the problem. After a mouseless-month I feel like I’m learning to use one for the very first time. You know, patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time – I could never master that.
I am awkward in exactly the opposite.I hate touchpad.
Well, there you have it. The ‘gender gap’.
That’s it, I’m sending Katie Taylor after ya:
Even PBO wouldn’t take on Katie, he’s seen her fists:
She has met the O’Bamas? Cool.
Yep, she met them in Dublin last year, those pics are from backstage when PBO gave that speech that still makes my knees go all wobbly. Or maybe that’s just old age?

cluny brought to our attention LOD’s “rewrite” segment last night, in which he implored the presidential debate moderators (Crowley, Scheiffer, etc) to do their jobs, stop playing into the GOP strategy, and ask Romney/Ryan more specific questions about their tax returns. This is a MUST-SEE segment, and needs to be spread far and wide.
Go to this link then click on the video to the far right titled “Rewriting Romney-Ryan on tax returns”
Lawrence asked his audience to write these four and say we expect this question to be asked: Why won’t you show your tax returns? What is keeping you from doing what you should? He wants thousands of people to write them…twitter or email. He had the twitter addresses on the screen if you watch the segment.
Then his last segent with Sister Simone was powerful too. She will not stop hammering Ryan for his anti-poor programs.
Chips, happy belated birthday, love. May the Lord God bless you real good; His grace and mercy continue to be yours in abundance.
Thanks so much Lorraine, hope you’re doing great?
BREAKING: US retail sales rose solid 0.8 percent in July after 3 straight months of declining sales.— The Associated Press (@AP) August 14, 2012
See? The Summer is always rough, until inventories get restocked for X-mas. The orders must be coming in early.
This is good news for John McCain!
Hey, Ryan better hurry and not pass an extension to the Production Tax Credit for wind energy so HIS Republican Congress can suck more jobs out of the economy.
Retail sales better than expected. But….
First stop today—–Nelson Pioneer Farm in Oskaloosa, Ia.
I note an upcoming event there is a square dance, no experience or partner necessary. So——opportunity!
Fun fact: Kermit and Rosie used to live in Oskaloosa. Who is Kermit and Rosie? My nice aunt and uncle. My kids called him Kermit the Frog.
Paul Ryan’s Five Worst Bush/Cheney-Era Blunders
By Jason Sattler
There’s a reason that George W. Bush immediately supported the announcement of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate. Paul Ryan was a loyal Bush/Cheney vote on all of the worst of that Administration’s historic screwups.
Let’s begin with the Iraq War Resolution, which was supported by far too many members of Congress on both sides of the aisle. Ryan was a solid “Yay” for this resolution. This tragic distraction ended up costing well over $800 billion, mostly funded through emergency supplemental appropriations bills that were conveniently not included in the deficit until 2010. Simply: There is no better example of wasteful spending in the last few decades than the Iraq War. And Paul Ryan voted for it.
Morning TOD and Chips.
For VP Biden’s speech at 10:15AM ET/ 9:15AM CT, C-SPAN will be covering the event. Here’s the link.
Excellent, thank you UT!
ROMNEY DOUBLING DOWN ON EMPTINESS
The Empty Foreign Policy Of Romney-Ryan
By Henry Decker
Unlike past presidential candidates like Bush and Barack Obama, who picked vice presidents who burnished their thin diplomatic resumes, Romney instead chose to double down on emptiness.
Despite having worked in Washington for virtually his entire adult life, Ryan has next to no experience in international relations. Ryan has largely avoided the topic throughout his seven terms in the House — preferring to focus his attention on budgetary issues instead — but he has taken a few notable stands.
Ryan’s most high profile foreign policy moment came in a June, 2011 speech to the Alexander Hamilton Society. There he argued in favor of American exceptionalism — hardly drawing a controversial line in the sand — and addressed a few issues of the time in broad terms.
The Empty Foreign Policy Of

I am glad the Obama campaign is putting that ad out because that welfare race baiting ad is still running here in N.C., Romney is such a lowlife lying creep.
I’m concerned about the ’700B cut from Medicare’ lie that must be addressed aggressively by the campaign. For some reasons, even liberal seniors choose to believe this lie (I deal with it all the time and I have to constantly re-inform people). Most surrogates have been good, but Rachel blew it Sunday morning (of course she’s not a surrogate but could have been prepared for this). The campaign needs some serious ads about how PBO’s ‘savings’ go back into extra benefits for seniors, whereas R&R TAKE those savings and give them as tax cuts to the rich.
They can’t afford to let this get national traction and stand any chance of having R&R use a major PBO and Democratic strength against them.

Romney stumbles badly on Medicare
By Steve Benen
“[M]y plan for Medicare, it’s very similar to his plan for Medicare, which is do not change the program for current retirees or near retirees, but do not do what the president has done, and that is to cut $700 billion out of the current program,” Romney eventually said.
Let me try to explain this in a way Romney will understand: if the Romney plan is the same as the Ryan plan, and the Ryan plan includes Obama’s Medicare savings, then the Romney plan includes the same Obama policy that Romney is condemning.
Romney can support the president’s policy that strengthens Medicare, or he can oppose the president’s policy that strengthens Medicare, but he can’t support and oppose the same policy at the same time.
Well, like some others, I missed all the hullabaloo last evening. Congrats Chips on another year on Earth. And may there be a whole ton more. We need you around providing us not only with all the goodies you bring to the table, but also providing a forum for others to do so as well. This is my gateway blog.
BTW, did PBO give you any special treats?
You’re the kindest Japa, thank you! I did indeed get a special PBO treat – he toasted the historic day in Iowa with a beer:
Ha, behind the scenes Republican operatives worry about the Ryan pick:
Away from the cameras, and with all the usual assurances that people aren’t being quoted by name, there is an unmistakable consensus among Republican operatives in Washington: Romney has taken a risk with Ryan that has only a modest chance of going right — and a huge chance of going horribly wrong.
In more than three dozen interviews with Republican strategists and campaign operatives — old hands and rising next-generation conservatives alike — the most common reactions to Ryan ranged from gnawing apprehension to hair-on-fire anger that Romney has practically ceded the election.
“I think it’s a very bold choice. And an exciting and interesting pick. It’s going to elevate the campaign into a debate over big ideas. It means Romney-Ryan can run on principles and provide some real direction and vision for the Republican Party. And probably lose. Maybe big,” said former President George W. Bush senior adviser Mark McKinnon.
“Very not helpful down ballot — very,” said one top Republican consultant.

Game of Thrones author rips #GOP apart for their voter suppression tactics & rips the tea party for their racist antics abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/…— (@utaustinliberal) August 14, 2012
George R.R. Martin, author of the novels on which the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones” is based, cyber ranted about “Republicans and their Teabagger allies” in a blog post on his website. Martin begins his blog post by clarifying that he is “way too busy these days for long political rants” but continues typing away about recent voter purges in certain battleground states. Martin says, “I would be remiss if I do not at least make passing mention of how depressed, disgusted, and, yes, angry I’ve become as I watch the ongoing attempts at voter suppression in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Iowa, and other states where Republicans and their Teabagger allies control key seats of power.”
Martin, an avid Obama supporter, continues his blog rant, saying, “The people behind these efforts at disenfranchising large groups of voters (the young, the old, the black, the brown) are not Republicans, since clearly they have scant regard for our republic or its values. They are oligarchs and racists clad in the skins of dead elephants.”

ROMNEY HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT
McLuhan Moments – Wyden Edition
By Steve Benen
The funny thing is, this keeps happening to Romney. He cited Jared Diamond as support for his views on international affairs. Diamond responded soon after, saying that Romney has no idea what he’s talking about. Romney cited Bill Clinton as support for his ridiculous take on welfare, and then Clinton shot back, saying the Republican is completely wrong. The Romney campaign cited several prominent economists as support for their economic plan, and then all of the economists cited said their work had been badly mischaracterized.
And now, Romney’s pointing to Ron Wyden, who came close yesterday to saying, “You know nothing of my work.”
At this point, these McLuhan Moments are making Romney look pretty foolish.
the biggest load of hooey the Romney/Ryan ticket will foist upon us between now and election day. And that’s the idea that the Republicans are the true protectors of Medicare, while the Democrats have tried to kill it.
The party that’s been trying to destroy Medicare since before it was even signed into law. The party of Ronald Reagan, who famously recorded a screed about how Medicare was a path to a communist dictatorship, and the party that thinks socialized medicine is worse than no medicine at all. They’re the true protectors and defenders of Medicare? That’s rich. Meanwhile, they’ll attempt to convince voters that the Obama administration has gutted the program, and the Democrats, who created Medicare and have defended it for the last 40-plus years, are the villains. Of course none of this is true.
The centerpiece of the Paul Ryan plan, which will likely be adopted by a would-be Romney administration, is as follows. For everyone younger than 54, the Medicare system as we know it will be replaced by vouchers. Retirees will pick their favorite private health insurance plan and the government will pay the private insurer for the premiums and other costs. There aren’t any mechanisms to control costs, there aren’t any caps on out-of-pocket expenses, and there’s nothing in the plan to increase voucher amounts to match rising costs. Oh, and this Medicare boondoggle is part of Ryan’s overall budget plan, which would increase the deficit to $6 trillion in ten years. He’s quite a fiscal hawk, isn’t he?
And let’s not forget the Lutnz speak they will use to detract from their real goal!!
It’s no wonder the National Republican Congressional Committee issued a memo suggesting that candidates use Orwell/Luntz-style words to describe the party’s approach to Medicare.
“Do not say: ‘entitlement reform,’ ‘privatization,’ ‘every option is on the table,’” the National Republican Congressional Committee said in an email memo. “Do say: ‘strengthen,’ ‘secure,’ ‘save,’ ‘preserve, ‘protect.’”
Just how does one apply for a focus group job? I’d love to sit on one, especially one conducted by Luntz. Talk about skewing the results! They’d probably be on to me in no time. They’d escort me out faster than Ryan had those two ladies removed from his grand opening.
Or faster than they took the guy to the floor with the bad shoulder at Ryan town hall for asking a question!
THIS ENTIRE THING IS A MUST READ! I’m printing it out and sending it to my 80 year old dad in FL….pass this around!
We are passing out Obama 2012 yard signs. 3 takers so far.
Talking about Bain Capitol, and about his tax returns is being in the gutter. No Mitt “the Liar” Romney was in the gutter are the things you did at Bain and with your tax returns you refusing to release. And lying.
MITT ROMNEY SCORES A PERFECT 10 ON MEDICARE DOUBLE-TALK AND LYING
The Romney-Ryan Medicare shuffle
If political double-talk were an Olympic event, Mitt Romney would have scored a perfect 10 in his “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday.
Asked about his new running mate’s Medicare overhaul proposal — a lightning rod for older voters — Romney executed a series of double-twisting logical backflips that put the U.S. gymnastics team to shame.
So let’s get this straight. When President Obama tries to control the soaring cost of a hugely expensive entitlement — while protecting benefits for senior citizens — he’s “robbing” Medicare.
But when Romney and Ryan call for dismantling the program as we have known it for 47 years — replacing it with vouchers likely to saddle consumers with thousands in extra costs — they’re “saving” Medicare and giving people “choices.”
The bottom line is that Romney and the rest of the GOP have painted themselves into a corner on health care — as on so many issues. As the party that claims to be fiscally conservative, they can’t advocate for simply borrowing more money to cover the mushrooming tab for Medicare and other entitlements.
Mitt Romney campaigned in Virginia over the weekend and boasted that his far-right running mate, Paul Ryan, worked with Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden (Ore.) to craft his Medicare privatization scheme.
Referencing Ryan, Romney boasted, “This man said, ‘I’m going to find Democrats to work with.’ He found a Democrat to co-lead a piece of legislation that makes sure we can save Medicare. Republicans and Democrats coming together.”
Wyden was not pleased.
“Gov. Romney is talking nonsense. Bipartisanship requires that you not make up the facts. I did not ‘co-lead a piece of legislation.’” Wyden said. “I wrote a policy paper on options for Medicare. Several months after the paper came out, I spoke and voted against the Medicare provisions in the Ryan budget.”
Ryan and Wyden did work together in December 2011 to develop a paper outlining ways to provide for Medicare solvency, including a “premium support” model. Under premium support, Medicare would allow a menu of competing plans to offer coverage with government payments. Wyden, however, never signed on to support the House-adopted budget resolution written by Ryan that included plans for a premium support approach.
“Gov. Romney needs to learn you don’t protect seniors by makings things up, and his comments today sure won’t help promote real bipartisanship,” Wyden said.
In a swipe at the GOP presidential ticket, senior Obama adviser David Axelrod on Tuesday defended President Barack Obama’s handling of Medicare.
“The president … took away subsidies, unwarranted subsidies, to insurance companies, and he used that money to help lengthen the life of Medicare by nearly a decade,” Axelrod said on CNN’s Starting Point, referencing a provision of the new health care law. “So when Gov. Romney says he doesn’t support that, obviously … that’s problematical.”
In the Car waiting for a breakfast run. LOL!
Mornin’ Joke ALERT!!!!
Fair warning, this is not a test. The comment you’re about to read may contain language not suitable for the Morning Joe aversion reader. Repeat, this is not a test. This comment is about the show we love to hate as follows:
One way to gauge the ‘Pubs barometer of how they feel about the election is by checking the volume of Joke’s response when challenged, or when he reverts back to his ‘when I ran for election’ spiel. Today he had a scream fest when Tweety, Eugene, and even Halprin (go figure) were shaking their collective heads at the Ryan choice. Then he orated on and on how he coulda been a contender. When things are going good for the ‘Pubs, he tends to keep his blood pressure in check. They went to commercial as Tweety was asking him when was Bush scheduled to speak at their convention, before or after Christy. He then asked why is the ‘Pub party ashamed of their most recent accomplishment. Needless to say, the Joke is still sputtering… ha, ha loved it.
OK you may open your eyes now, back to our regularly scheduled comments.
You are so right!!! When things are going great, he’s laughing it up. But when things are going bad for the GOP, he’s snippy, and he loses his temper, and he gets on his rants!!! I think Morning Joke would be a terrible poker player! LOL!
Thanks for sharing this, cookemom,
I’m laughing so hard! Morning Joke is a joke. He coulda been a contender? In what world? I loved that Tweety asked him about GWB!
To chipsticks, happy, happy belated birthday. You’re a real doll for putting up with us, especially amk and yardarm who need super naughty mats when you post pics of FL Michelle Obama!!
Now, Chips, how in this world did I miss your birthday celebration? I feel so bad. Really, Chips, you have been on my mind to personally write to you for two days . I was so tempted to write to you and thank you for keeping me joyful and sane when all goes so wrong for me. I did it again last night, but then I know how busy you are, I stopped. This is really weird. I felt a need to express my thanksfulness to you.
I should have followed my heart at first. So for my great miss; I just want to say, no one could have a greater and sweeter wish for a Birthday than you and my precious mother. That is how deeply I respect and appreciate you,Chips. That is how close and very special you have been to me ,since I first came into your family here. I really mean that. You have given me so much love, and welcoming warmth that only I feel from my mother’s caring and uplifting love while she graced this earth with her love.
Thank you for all that you do to lift my spirit daily, Chips. I pray and peacefully hope that you will
have many more wonderful celebrations on your Birthday. (((( I love you, Ms. Chips))))) Happy Belated Joyful and Sweet Birthday to a very sweet spirit of a gem, my Chips. Love you, Chips,HZ
