This is really a great read. This guy takes on the media via Brian Williams like nobody’s business. IMHO, this open letter has front page appeal.

That letter is great. She expressed what I’ve wanted to say to him for several years. I’ve emailed him various times with specific criticisms, but since the new web page and NBC site, I have found no way to email him or the show. The only contactsays “media inquiries.”
He and the others of his type are making the discourse bad. As the writer said, the media go for shiny objects, like silly remarks of silly people, and build their program around that. Like her, I want solid news, not opinions and speculations in the news program. If anyone knows how to email Williams, please let me know. Or, I will write a letter and use the USPS.
Her letter uses specific words right from The Daily Show to demonstrate her concerns. Good writing, good evidence.

Sabreen, this is an absolutely brilliant letter that lays open the vapidity and hypocrisy of the television news. It should be spread far and wide. It is, in my opinion, the reason why tv news is ultimately doomed as it well should be.

It’s a great letter. Where she says Fox started this problem is wrong, though. When the news division was forced to “earn it’s keep” or make money for the corporation is when it started. Paddy Chayefsky was writing about it in 1976 in the movie “Network.” Fox put the concept on steriods.

As I have posted countless tweets with #InaugurationInsurgency it appears we may now have sufficient evidence to drive the message of the willful attempt to destroy a President irrespective of the calamitous consequences to Americans and global stability. As you realize, if they had succeeded we would be living in a 21st Century Global Depression – or, maybe not, maybe our species would now be extinct – a more likely outcome than many would care to consider.

Chips, it would be quite worthwhile if you are willing to dedicate a thread or two as we approach and move through the RNC with the header #InaugurationInsurgency – please share your insights and documentation, so we can alert the many people who view TOD that – IN_DEED #YesWeKnow.

    Thank you.

Ryan said in an interview, in the same sentence, that Democrats came to Him to make His plan bi partisan.
Wyden has said that is not true. Me thinks, Wyden is going to have to be more clear, maybe a tv interview, denouncing Ryans plan.
It must be awful, that Wyden is the only talking point that Ryan has? Wyden must feel like crap, at least, I hope he does.
Also, Politi-Fact rated Ryans claim about Obamacare raiding Medicare, as mostly false.
    MOSTLY???
Also, the President does Ohio and another State next week, Joe does Minnesota and Michigan.

    • 48 hopefruit2
      August 19, 2012 at 7:59 am

I remember when Wyden teamed up with Ryan we were all pissed, and rightfully so, because we knew that would be used against him (and the DEMS) during the election. Wyden is foolish if he didn’t know what was coming down the pike, otherwise he knew exactly what he was doing, but it has backfired.

Our side has been engaged in a lot of “that’s not true” — responding to Republican lies. We’re not in front of this debate and that is just unacceptable when it comes to Medicare. They are setting the narrative and we’re responding. This drives me insane.

Hey Guys, I just caught the last 5 minutes of this absolutely PRECIOUS HBO documentary called “I Can Be President: A Kid’s View”

    http://www.hbo.com/documentaries/i-can-be-president-a-kids-eye-view/index.html#

    http://www.hbofamily.com/programs/i-can-be-president.html

It’s 22 sublime minutes of some adorable young people describing their impressions of what it would like to grow up and be President. Apparently, it came out last year, so it’s not in regular rotation, but you can catch it again on HBO2 West this morning at 9AM ET (which would be at 6AM PT) or on HBO GO if you subscribe to HBO through your cable or satellite provider. Astoundingly, it’s not available on HBO On Demand. It won an Image Award this year.

    SYNOPSIS
    ———————–
What would it be like to grow up and become president of the United States?  In I CAN BE PRESIDENT: A KID’S-EYE VIEW, a diverse group of children candidly share their thoughts on the subject, affirming the importance of having dreams at any age.

The heartwarming special features interviews with elementary schoolers whose hopes and dreams – both hilarious and touching – come to life in animated sequences.  One says that if kids could be president, there would be “free ice cream for all,” while another promises “macaroni and cheese every day!”  One girl remarks, “I’d only be president if I could have weird hair like George Washington.”  Though sometimes humorous, their observations offer a promising vision of the nation’s future.

The election of Barack Obama was an inspiration to the children featured in I CAN BE PRESIDENT: A KID’S-EYE VIEW.  Despite their youth, they understand that barriers of discrimination have come tumbling down and see greater possibilities for themselves.  In their own words, they explain that Obama has given them more than change – he has given them hope.  One girl declares, “He was black and all the other past presidents were white.  And even though he was different from the other past presidents, he still wanted to try because he wanted to do that job.”

Offering a young person’s view of civics and ethics, I CAN BE PRESIDENT: A KID’S-EYE VIEW has lessons for all ages, with simple yet profound observations on diversity, war, life, being a leader and becoming an adult.  Says one child, “Being a better person right now can make you a president when you grow up,” while another notes that, if sworn into office, she would promise citizens kindness and lots of caring friendship in their lives.

I CAN BE PRESIDENT: A KID’S-EYE VIEW is the latest collaboration between director-producer Diane Kolyer and director-producer-animator Michael Sporn.  Kolyer directed and produced the Peabody Award-winning HBO documentary “The Music in Me,” which spawned two more “Music in Me” specials for the network.  Her other HBO credits include the Emmy®-winning “Happy to Be Nappy and Other Stories of Me,” the Emmy®-nominated “Rosie O’Donnell’s Kids Are Punny” and the interstitial series “My Favorite Book.”  Kolyer was most recently a producer for the Peabody Award-winning “A Letter to Elia,” directed by Martin Scorsese.

Emmy®-nominated animator Michael Sporn has won dozens of awards at film festivals throughout his animation career, which spans over three decades. He was nominated for an Oscar® in 1985 in the category of Best Short Film, Animated for “Doctor DeSoto,” and has also been nominated for seven Emmy® Awards.

I CAN BE PRESIDENT: A KID’S-EYE VIEW was produced by Diane Kolyer and Michael Sporn; animated segments directed by Michael Sporn; interviews directed by Diane Kolyer; editor, Geof Bartz, A.C.E.; director of photography, Michael Chin; animated, rendered & composited by Matthew Clinton, Katrina Gregorius and Michael Sporn.  For HBO:  supervising producer, Jacqueline Glover; executive producer, Sheila Nevins.

very important to get this out: the Villages is NOT representative of FL or the senior community in general. It is full of nothing but rich Republicans who have no interest, no heart and no experience with what a safety net is meant to be. My local Chicago news coverage made it sound as if the three Republicans who were interviewed after the Ryan event were representative of all FL seniors. Unconscionable.

When Paul Ryan holds a non-screened event in the heart of Broward County and takes questions from real seniors who could not live without SS and Medicare, then we can pay him some attention. In front of a group of seniors who get mojitos on the veranda at 10:00 — they are not part of the debate. They are Republican props.

No wonder PBO does not want to “go through THEM” because it is not about “reporting what the President is or has done”, it’s about the reporter and his/her ratings…..me me me, it’s all about me and they don’t DO ANYTHING important.

    Hey TODville,

I think that to defend the social safety net we should :

    (1) directly ask the gop-supporting seniors WHY they think it would be okay to take from their grandchildren some thing that they know has been very central to their own survival (i.e. bluntly, are seniors goling to lead the effort to steal the retirement security of their grand children by endorsing the ryan-romney plan?). Whatever words we use the idea is to shame them for supporting the destruction of something that they have used themselves

    (2) start to enroll young people and those under 55 years in a counter-attack saying that we have not given these thieves permission to destroy medicare, medicaid and social security because WE ALSO WANT it available when we retire. We will NEVER allow the system to be privatized so that the money can go into Walstreet backers of the gop!

    • 78 Ladyhawke
      August 19, 2012 at 9:01 am

Exactly GCL I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Basically, Boy Wonder Paul Ryan went down to Florida with his mother to tell seniors that they have nothing to worry about BUT HE PLANS TO SCREW THEIR CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN AND ANYONE ELSE THEY CARE ABOUT UNDER 55. Now there’s a message that should go far. He basically INSULTED EVERY GRANDPARENT LISTENING TO HIM BECAUSE HE TELLS THEM JUST THINK ABOUT YOURSELF NOT YOUR GRANDCHILDREN. .

It’s outrageous. I agree with you we need a simple way to make this powerful point so that a five year old gets it. The Republicans are masters at doublespeak and the feckless mainstream media has abandoned anything resembling real journalism.

I don’t know if anyone is aware of this – but it seems that Youtube is promoting the birther Navy seals anti-Obama video. Since Friday, I noticed that whenever I went on the site, this video is the first thing that appears on the page ( I very rarely watch videos about military/navy/Bin laden). And currently it is still the first video that pops up on the site when I go on. I also noticed that the number of views is quite enormous and rapidly increasing – almost 2 million in less than one week.

I think we need to let others be aware that Youtube (now owned by Google) is promoting this rabid piece of trash on their site.

    • August 19, 2012 at 8:54 am

Those 2 million views are all tea Baggers. Tea Baggers love to reinforce their hatred.
Just like that new movie that is coming out next week, 2016. Ain’t nobody going to see that, but the Baggers.
      Tea Baggers= Haters!

Why is Youtube promoting this video? Everytime I go on the site that’s the first thing I see. I’m not a bagger, and should not be subject to this crap unless I search for it.

Somebody said Chris Jayes was good today. I turn Him on, and that wonderful Person is in, discussing the stimulus package.
And then, Sam Seder interupts Him and says, if the President thinks Stimulus is so good why did he go to Austerity?
That is a loaded question, and I am not going to rehash what happened in August 2011.
But, Sam Seder is a Jerk for bringing that up, in that way. Manipulative!

Viviette Applewhite, 93-year-old plaintiff in Pa. voter ID case, gets card amid appeal

    http://thegrio.com/2012/08/17/viviette-applewhite-93-year-old-plaintiff-in-pa-voter-id-case-gets-card-amid-appeal/

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking to overturn Pennsylvania’s tough new voter identification law has received the state-issued photo ID card necessary to vote, despite saying she’d been rejected for years because she lacked appropriate documentation to receive the card.

Viviette Applewhite, who recalled marching for voting rights in 1960 with Martin Luther King Jr., was issued the temporary card on Thursday, the same day lawyers for her and others opposing the law appealed a judge’s refusal to halt the law from taking effect in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

Applewhite, 93, had trouble meeting the state’s documentation requirements to get a photo ID. For one thing, she did not have a Social Security card after it was stolen with her purse some years ago, she has said. Plus, she was adopted early in life, making the name on her birth certificate different from that on her other paperwork, and she did not have a record of the adoption.

Applewhite received her identification card after riding two public-transit buses to a Department of Transportation licensing office and presenting a clerk with her Medicare card from the 1990s, a state document listing her name and Social Security number in her own handwriting, and proof of her Philadelphia address, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
