I email Meet the Press early this morning to talk to David GopGregory about Mitt Romney’s take your hate and anger back to Chicago comment. I ask GopGregory where is Romney and his supporters going to take their hate, anger, and racism? What do Romney think of his people calling the President non-American? And about Romney lying before about his taxes in 2002, and ask Gregory, no I told him that we know Romney is hiding something about his tax returns. I told GopGregory that 63% of Americans think Romney need to release his tax returns.
it might be a good idea for us to ‘work the refs’ like the other side does. When writing to Gregory we should, rightly, accuse him of spinning for his basketball buddy, Ayn Paul. Shame him so that he has to think twice before he does it so blatantly again. The only thing these people care about is themselves – not the job they are supposed to do for the American people. Thanks for emailing him Anniebella.
One of the producers of MTP is the WIFE of Jim H. Of Politico. We all know Politico. The official periodical of the Dick Cheney. So that also is a fact that needs to be pointed out. The symbiotic relationships in DC/NY that truly blurs news gathering and reporting.
Does anyone still watch the Sunday morning shows? I mean, besides shut-ins and a few policy wonks? I haven’t watched any of them for at least 30 years…no, make that 40. I saw a clip of David Gregory and he has a half-baked look much like David Brooks. (Literally. He looks like a blob of dough put into a too-cool oven. All soft around the edges.)
Of course, I have TOD and Charlies Pierce to keep me informed. Thank you for endangering your brain so I don’t have to.
Our Beloved First Family walks in love every day, all of the time. They are very kind people. They are highly intelligent. President Obama is firm and very fatherly. People are drawn to him. He is very charismatic. First Lady Michelle is a genuine, warm, caring woman. She exudes gentle strength. She is beautiful inside and out and has grown so strongly into her role as First Lady. She is terrific and people are drawn to her. Malia is a very mature 14-year-old who knows that she is much loved by her parents and family. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking to overturn Pennsylvania’s tough new voter identification law has received the state-issued photo ID card necessary to vote, despite saying she’d been rejected for years because she lacked appropriate documentation to receive the card.
Viviette Applewhite, who recalled marching for voting rights in 1960 with Martin Luther King Jr., was issued the temporary card on Thursday, the same day lawyers for her and others opposing the law appealed a judge’s refusal to halt the law from taking effect in the Nov. 6 presidential election.
Applewhite, 93, had trouble meeting the state’s documentation requirements to get a photo ID. For one thing, she did not have a Social Security card after it was stolen with her purse some years ago, she has said. Plus, she was adopted early in life, making the name on her birth certificate different from that on her other paperwork, and she did not have a record of the adoption.
Applewhite received her identification card after riding two public-transit buses to a Department of Transportation licensing office and presenting a clerk with her Medicare card from the 1990s, a state document listing her name and Social Security number in her own handwriting, and proof of her Philadelphia address, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. [... more in the article]
This is wonderful for Viviette Applewhite, who got all the help and publicity. But tens of thousands of other poor souls will not have this help and Judge Presscott told them all to got to hell.
I do not know for certain how this would work out in the US justice system, but normally, setting a precedent is a good thing (you cannot deny others something that someone is able to get legally).
Up and at ‘em O’s!!!!! It’s another great getting up day for us TODdies!!! so I was on my way out of the door when I heard that Eric guy, Mitt’s campaign manager on State of the Union. I didn’t want to hear him, so off I went. I’d forgotten something, returned to find Stephanie Cutter speaking. She was FANTASTIC!!!!! If you can get the video, it’s a must see. She gets better every time. She even does a sly mock of the guy sitting in for Crowley, when he tried to defend Mitt as a young father making a mistake putting Seamus on the roof of the car. Hillarious. She owned that interview. Ok, now I really gotta go.
Next up….my political take for today when I return, after these messages.
Have to leave soon as I type this in. If you all did not see that last segment on CH’s show WATCH IT!!!!! Repeat: Do NOT miss it. Video of Paul Ryan…..priceless and you who tweet, tweet away and do it all week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree. I will be watching this show again. I know everyone is not a fan of Chris, but this show should be required viewing for everyone at TOD. Chris started off with the voter disenfranchisement. Then they talked about the poor with a young woman who was just fantastic. She made the problems of the recession so real and she thanked PBO for what he has done. I hope the OFA team will get to her. She would be a great advocate. Now Chris is talking about The New New Deal with Michael Grunwald. This man has done an incredible service for President Obama and the Democrats two months before the election. He explains what the Recovery Act actually did that so many people just don’t know about. Michael Grunwald likes to say that the Recovery Act was what PBO meant when he said CHANGE.
I was watching off and on, because I can get so angry at his show. Sam Seder was ridiculous with his blind “everything is Obama’s fault”. However, Grunnwald would have none of it. It was an interesting discussion on the stimulus. The black woman made a point that not enough of the stimulus for renewables went into the poorer communities. See, I don’t mind when that sort of issue is brought up in terms of discussion, as long as it isn’t used as a club against democrats and POTUS in general.
I was so impressed with Grunnwald and the frame that the Recovery Act is the most misunderstood piece of legislation ever, that I immediately ordered the book for kindle. I just read the first few pages and I think this is a must-read in order for us to seriously re-frame this debate. We don’t have a moment to lose.
Great comment 57. The admiration I feel for Michael Grunwald is increasing every minute. This man has done what the fourth estate could not do in over three years. I am so thrilled that this book is being released now. Finally, President Obama is getting the credit he deserves for the new new deal. President Obama is a visionary leader. He gets the job done even with the relentless obstruction of saboteurs in the opposition party. I am fired up. I will be going the Barnes and Noble today to get this book. It should be required reading for every American.
Must read for everyone you know who says they are “disappointed in PBO”. Socks it to all those emprogs and right wing liars and puts proper emphasis on just how smart PBO is.
Watching Up With Chris Hayes you can always depend on Sam “President Obama did fight hard enough for the public option” Seder to find something negative to say. I really was shocked this morning that he did not actually bring up the horror of no public option in Obamacare. The healthcare legislation that five presidents tried to get. Anyway, this morning Sam Seder made it a point to say that President Obama should have said that the stimulus was not big enough in the beginning. Meanwhile, the biggest reason the stimulus was not big enough was because the three Republicans who eventually voted for it and many Blue Dog Democrats were the biggest obstacle. Sam conveniently overlooks that fact.
psst, Sam. POTUS DID say that, since he is on record as wanting a bigger stimulus. His goal, however, was to inject as much as he could into the economy as fast as he could. You twit.
We can re-hash that first year of PBO’s presidency all we want and end up with our same views. A waste of time. PBO calculated that it was more important to get the stimulus into the economy as fast as possible, rather than fight Republicans and Blue Dogs who nobody knew would be as awful as they are at that early juncture. It was not unreasonable to think that Republicans had a shred of decency at the beginning of 2009 – common sense said that they would be on the ropes after owning the Bush economy. No one contemplated that the Blue Dogs would have no allegiance to the Democratic agenda. No one really could fathom that Republicans would be willing to tank the economy further in order to hang it around PBO’s neck. No one thought the entire party would be that evil.
PBO could have said ‘no tax cuts’ and we’d still be waiting to pass the stimulus. Yes, virtually all honest economists knew that tax cuts don’t represent long term stimulus; but in that first year of the bill, it helped buy school books and shoes for kids.
Those of Us here chiding Up With Chris Hayes……well…TODAY……I will Not be sharing in the bashing. The show has been what my HEART, MIND and SOUL been aching FOR.
The show is fantastic and the panel….Including Michael Grunwald…..Sam Seeder(sp) still a raging unsatisfied Liberal…..the Show is doing Brilliantly what Journalism is all about. I will not complain today about C. Hayes today.
this is how Chris Hayes kept my interest past a commercial break: as Sam was spouting his Disappointed Liberal b.s. that accomplishes nothing, Chris said that this is a normal conversation that happens all the time with liberals, but after the break let’s look at what the stimulus actually DID.
Now, Chris Hayes, if you were that good a moderator every week I might actually watch your show on a regular basis. And I’m speaking as a progressive who actually is working to keep Democrats in office and not depress voter turnout. Do you want a better country or don’t you? Do you want to help or open the Gates of Hell?
This is another clue that our MSM is a steaming pile of garbage.

this is what happens when dealing with liars. These guys have zero core beliefs… when we’ve gone back in time to view Barack Obama’s interviews, books, speeches.. he is always the same person, with the same depth and virtues.. his beliefs evolve & mature as he grows- but there is no where that he is one person and then another… the same rock solid Barack Obama with the same strength in character. Romney/Ryan are pure politics all the time- its about winning for ‘their side’… nothing to do with whats best for the country, the people.. they will say anything at any given moment to ‘win’.
I’m with you, Meta. I cringe inside every time I see his fake smile, smug face and hear his idiot, lying laugh. As much as I think it’s important to watch the upcoming debates, it’s going to be VERY difficult.
I hear you. I’m going to grit my teeth and watch only because I know PBO will do a masterful job of taking him down a hundred million notches. Just from the few clips I’ve seen of Romney during the RW primary debates, he’s so thoroughly unlikable and condescending and overconfident, it will be a thrill to see PBO slam that smirk off his face.
Stef Cutter is AMAZING. How do we clone a million Stef Cutter’s? She is eating Kevin Madden for breakfast on This Week ABC. She’s using some Jedi mind trick to list accomplishment after accomplishment of Pres. Obama’s and the destructive policies Romney-Ryan have proposed. Kevin Madden is talking about dogs and Seamus. This is just brilliant.
Gibbs: Ryan should ‘thank’ Obama for strengthening Medicare [video from FoxNews included]
Senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs defended the administration’s record on Medicare from GOP attacks on Sunday, saying that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) should “thank President Obama” for strengthening the program.
During a campaign stop in The Villages, Florida Saturday, Ryan appeared with his mother, who is on Medicare, and continued hammering the administration for a $716 billion reduction in the program’s spending, claiming Obama “raided” Medicare to pay for his own healthcare reform bills.
Gibbs pushed back on those claims during an interview on Fox News Sunday. “If he wants to protect Medicare for his mother he should first of all thank President Obama for what he’s done over the past few years to extend the life of the Medicare trust fund, to help seniors with their prescription drug costs to help seniors get free preventive care. ” said Gibbs… more in the article]

Today, the media plays a sick game of NOT and Never investigating what these people have said if R is after their last names. But Pres Obama and Dems, their words, old tapes and deeds are thrown back at them, over and over again. 2002 is just 10 yrs ago. 2009 is just 3 yrs ago. What Ryan has said previously are NOT hard to track. But the DC/NY media pundits want to prop their Romney and the want their profit margins…..irrespective of the harm the USA at large is suffering. That is the sad state of our 4th estate.
If it were not about Race issues in the South…..Romney and Ryan would lose all but UT come Nov 6, 2012. But with the Citizen United, racial issues, media and the right wing media echo chamber, what USA needs to break the backs of the destructive TBGOPers are manipulated falsely by artificial forces.
I think you’re correct, Nena. I’ve been remembering back to the race Barry Goldwater so resoundingly lost and thinking that this ticket is even more repressive and deserves to lose similarly, but won’t because of racism.
There was a link here last night of a site that has the electoral college count and the solid Romney states are all the usual suspects and nothing more.
Stef Cutter is freaking awesome. She was just on This Week ABC and was bloody amazing. Jake Tapper tried to pretend outrage at Pres. Obama talking about Seamus – the dog Romney loooooved to roof rack – in Iowa while mocking Romney’s disregard for wind energy. Cutter dismissed Tapper’s concerns and went on to list a plethora of policies Pres. Obama has put in place to help states like Iowa and New Hampshire with renewable energy. She talked about the thousands of jobs created and the doubling of wind/renewable energy used for electricity. Kevin Madden wanted to focus on Seamus the dog. Cutter moved on to Medicare and how Pres. Obama’s plan strengthened the program. Kevin whined about how Pres. Obama is so mean to Romney. At this point, Tapper – surprising me – cut in and told Madden that the Romney campaign wasn’t innocent. He then played an Obama 2012 ad that showed Romney saying Pres. Obama’s practices a strategy of appeasement, apologizes for America when he should be apologizing for himself and to America, that President Obama doesn’t understand Americans and America (because hey he’s a Kenyan Marxist Socialist Communist Fascist), etc. Viewers got to witness an ugly side of Romney. As a Democrat and a human being I was cheering. Kevin was stuttering trying to explain the video evidence.
Tapper then tried to bring up VP Biden’s “chains comment” and how Rudy Giuliani thinks VP Biden is stupid and lacks the mental capacity to be President (Stay classy Rudy). Cutter immediately talked about how John Boehner, Romney, Santorum and the rest have used “shackles” analogy and the full context of VP Biden’s remark explained that. She then mocked Rudy for his slobbering love-fest introduction of Sarah Palin at the 08 RNC convention and said she bets he’s not full throatedly endorsing her now and would like to walk back a lot of his statements. She basically said she wouldn’t take VP advice from Rudy. She praised VP Biden and said how thankful she was that he was out there telling the American people the truth. Then she reverted back to talking about how Medicare would be bankrupt under the Romney-Ryan plan, how the deficit would ballon up, how middle-class families would see a tax hike under Romney, how Bain Capital bankrupted even more companies, laid off people, took away their pensions and healthcare. She went on and on and on and on. Just reeling out damning fact after fact. Then she would intersperse it with how Pres. Obama’s plans would benefit the middle-class.
She left Kevin Madden looking like a chump. And when the interview was over, she smiled devilishly, thanked Tapper and told him she looks forward to being on the show again. Damn! I love that woman.
utaustin, I too want to thank you! You give such comprehensive summaries of the Sunday shows. I SO appreciate it! I also know that if I want to know what was said at a campaign stop, I can always look at your tweets to get the finer points of what was said. You’re such an asset to this site!
Yes! Thanks UT – it really helps to read such a precise summary of the shows and I especially enjoyed your obvious enjoyment of Stephanie Cutter running rings around Madden.
I didn’t see it but I saw a retweet from Michelle Malkin complaining about it. Waah, waah. Cutter bashing Romney and talking about the issues waaah waah waaah.
Stephanie Cutter is brilliant. Love her so much, and she is a true supporter of representing POB to the world. She brings it on, no matter whose show she is on. Thanks POB for Stephanie Cutter!HZ
Good west coast morning to you! Thanks for the summary of the Sunday shows. I now know it’s safe to watch and that our points are finally getting highlighted. OK now off to watch This week and MTP.
WOOOSH! Ut – this is a FANTASTIC summary as only you could do – thank you so much. The Obama camp couldn’t have asked for a better surrogate than Stephanie!!
Congratulations to “Meet the Press” executive producer Betsy Fischer and Politico senior writer Jonathan Martin, who married over the weekend in Virginia. Politico’s Mike Allen officiated the ceremony, and gave the couple a generous shout-out in “Playbook.”
According to “Playbook,” former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw toasted the couple, who were engaged in October, 2011
Just one big happy family, isn’t it?—–all members of the same club, all inter-connected, all on the same page. Another reason that the state of our news media is in shambles, corrupt and derelict in their duty to our democracy.
Nepotism…. is the word. Dereliction of Journalistic duty. The same people, playing, shopping, vacationing, working, and partying together.
Who is protecting OUR democracy? Who is calling the refs out? Who is the principal of the Journalistic Code of ethics? When do USA citizenry Win….when those who are to be Objective umpires are IN Bed TOGETHER?
if the owners of the media actually cared about journalism, he would’ve been fired immediately after that, but as we know all too well, it’s not about journalism – it’s about helping republicans win elections, so people like martin and his now wife will keep their jobs as long as they want, no matter the ethics violations and lack of any real record of actual journalism (in-depth investigation? deep enlightening look at some aspect of society?). Note that this bar-b-que seemed to be the beginning of the meghan mccain as political pundit nonsense too.
i’m at least happy to see the fraud of tom brokaw being exposed though in recent years. he’s resurfacing again just in time for the election, so prepare for his anti-obama/pro-republican spin on everything.
For someone who is hiding so much and is so deceitful, so thoroughly unlikable and condescending, .@MittRomney is laughably overconfident— meta (@metaquest) August 19, 2012
“What we’re trying to accomplish today with the passage of this third stimulus package is to create jobs and help the unemployed,” Ryan said in video that aired today on Up w/ Chris Hayes. The remarks came during a House debate on the measure on Feb. 14, 2002.
Ryan said “I urge members to drop the demagoguery and to pass this bill to help us work together to get the American people back to work and help those people who’ve lost their jobs.”
Seems like President Obama said almost exactly the same – So how are R&R going to spin this one.
Scandal! Willard ordered COFFEE ice cream in Nantucket yesterday!!! See, as a Mormon he is not allowed any coffee/cola drinks—-caffeine is the devil’s playground, or something—–no alcohol either, can’t have a beer with him even if you lost your mind and would want to. One can only conclude that coffee ice cream does not contain any real coffee but fakey coffee flavoring and so it passed the Mormon muster. And this is the kind of story that our news media has plucked from the universe and decided needed attention. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_ROMNEY_COFFEE_ICE_CREAM_1ST_LD?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-08-19-08-43-41
Goodness, this is breaking news and a major game-changer, not only for the election but for America, the whole world, and even Mars.
Interestingly, the MSM does not seem to care that Willard held SIX fundraising events behind closed doors. Why should they, or we? The most important news is that he mingled with locals at Millie’s Restaurant for 10 minutes for photo-ops, and bought coffee icecream. That’s enough for our feckless MSM.
Ryan targeted on women’s issues
By MAGGIE HABERMAN, EMILY SCHULTHEIS and LOIS ROMANO | 8/19/12 7:04 AM
Paul Ryan co-sponsored a federal “personhood” amendment. He voted to defund Planned Parenthood. He opposes all abortions, except when the life of the mother is at risk. And he supports a federal bill requiring women to get an ultrasound before an abortion. If this sounds like an ominous ad from the Obama for president campaign, something like it could soon be coming to a TV near you.

Joke Tapper’s needle is stuck on the “Seamus” track
David Gregory is tangled up in VP Biden’s “chains” comment.
Neither one of them has any brain space left to discuss anything else on their shows. No wonder PBO is bypassing them for pressers or interviews.

Viviette Applewhite, 93-year-old plaintiff in Pa. voter ID case, gets card amid appeal
http://thegrio.com/2012/08/17/viviette-applewhite-93-year-old-plaintiff-in-pa-voter-id-case-gets-card-amid-appeal/
That is great news…..but in Pittsburgh they are denying people and making some other pay for the “free id ”

Or just as good Sunday morning! Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy a good story!
Nice. Just sent it to my NYC friends ~ thanks!
Think Again: Obama’s New Deal
The president’s Republican critics are dead wrong. The stimulus worked.
It’s a excellent read.

Up with Chris Hayes is on line here:

Wow! Chris on Up found a video of Paul Ryan in Feb. 2002 on the floor of the house supporting stimulus! Needs to go viral.
Yeah, “We are all Keynesians now”:

[ but we want to deny it, because facts have a liberal bias ... /snark ]
Good morning, TODville.
This is another clue that our MSM is a steaming pile of garbage.
More of the same:
Ralph Maxwell, the 92 year with the O Romney-O poem has already met PBO.

Bringing over ffom the last thread!
Oh MAN! That was something! That was the smartest thing he ever said, then! Now, it will be the kiss of death:) This video needs to go viral…ASAP!
Up with Chris Hayes had a very good show this morning about the poor and how the President’s policies have help with the recovery act.
Paul Ryan is slowly helping to sink the Romney campaign. He and Romney are now a tag team of self destruction.
this is what happens when dealing with liars.
Very well put, sheri.
well thank you ED
you made my day!
((((((Thank you for those words, sherijr.))))))) Hope all is well for you. HZ
UT…..you, Bobfr and Amk….are just energizer Bunnies…..you all keep Going, and going and going. Thank you for all you do. Blessings to You all.
Thank you so much. Blessings to you too.
Exactly!
All the Twitter brigade need to work this today and beyond….
Hate his smug face and that idiot laugh that is the tell he’s lying.
“maybe – ha ha ha” grrr.
I wish I could’ve seen this
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/244261-gibbs-ryan-should-thank-obama-for-strengthening-medicare
My motto for MSM:
When MSM report/s the Facts, USA thrives.
HEE HAW!!
Yes…and those State have low population so no road to 270.
I disagree. Any Dem regardless of color would be in trouble in the South. Clinton and Gore were native sons and got wiped out.
I’m going to buy this book today. And then I’m going to buy one for my dad…
Thanks for the GREAT summary (I don’t have TV – get all my info over the internet).
Oh, BTW you’re fabulous with your tweets summarizing POTUS, FLOTUS speeches. Much appreciated even after I’ve watched them via live streams.
Thank you so much.
utaustin – you write the best summaries of political shows and live blogging of speeches – here and on Twitter. I read all of them — Thank YOU!
Awww..thanks.
utaustin, I too want to thank you! You give such comprehensive summaries of the Sunday shows. I SO appreciate it! I also know that if I want to know what was said at a campaign stop, I can always look at your tweets to get the finer points of what was said. You’re such an asset to this site!
Thank you!
Yes! Thanks UT – it really helps to read such a precise summary of the shows and I especially enjoyed your obvious enjoyment of Stephanie Cutter running rings around Madden.
Yes, thanks UT. I enjoy reading your comments and I always RT your tweets. I appreciate your beautiful dedication in what you do. Thank you, UT!!!! HZ
I didn’t see it but I saw a retweet from Michelle Malkin complaining about it. Waah, waah. Cutter bashing Romney and talking about the issues waaah waah waaah.
If Malkin was complaining…..Cutter hit a home run!
Thank you ut for that rundown. Super Smart Stef Cutie-Pie Cutter should get some prominent post in the next Obama admin. I am thinking WH spox.
thanks for the play by play UT – you’re on fiyah out there!
WOOOSH! Ut – this is a FANTASTIC summary as only you could do – thank you so much. The Obama camp couldn’t have asked for a better surrogate than Stephanie!!
I love your summaries, UT. You are an angel
Awww..thanks DF.
Thanks for the summary and your tweets. You do an awesome job: amazing that you still have time to study. #FiredUp.
Thank you for the kind words.
You rock, UT!

Well this answers alot and reinforces our opinion of the media!
URP. Tom Brokaw. Thanks for the link, DD.
Just one big happy family, isn’t it?—–all members of the same club, all inter-connected, all on the same page. Another reason that the state of our news media is in shambles, corrupt and derelict in their duty to our democracy.
All in bed with each other, literally and otherwise.
Almost incest like.
Nepotism…. is the word.
That’s why I love the fact that PBO keeps the press at a distance. They hate him for it but it’s ethically the right thing to do.
first time i remember seeing jonathan martin’s name was the bar-b-que mccain had at one of his mansions, and martin brought cindy mccain flowers and “manned the grills.”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/09/mccains-daughter-goes-beh_n_90647.html?
if the owners of the media actually cared about journalism, he would’ve been fired immediately after that, but as we know all too well, it’s not about journalism – it’s about helping republicans win elections, so people like martin and his now wife will keep their jobs as long as they want, no matter the ethics violations and lack of any real record of actual journalism (in-depth investigation? deep enlightening look at some aspect of society?).
This piece was factually amazing. Very in-depth and a serious MUST READ and MUST SHARE.
wow rt’d thanks ut

I just watched the Chris Hayes video – just WOW –
http://upwithchrishayes.msnbc.com/_news/2012/08/19/13361928-video-paul-ryan-defended-stimulus-in-2002-when-george-w-bush-wanted-it?chromedomain=leanforward&lite
They’ll simply try to pretend it never happened – will the MSM go along?
is that a rhetorical question?
The devil Made Romney do it? LOL.
New post everyone:

Ryan targeted on women’s issues
By MAGGIE HABERMAN, EMILY SCHULTHEIS and LOIS ROMANO | 8/19/12 7:04 AM
Paul Ryan co-sponsored a federal “personhood” amendment. He voted to defund Planned Parenthood. He opposes all abortions, except when the life of the mother is at risk. And he supports a federal bill requiring women to get an ultrasound before an abortion. If this sounds like an ominous ad from the Obama for president campaign, something like it could soon be coming to a TV near you.
Uh huh!
