Steve Benen: …. Ferguson’s new cover story marks an ignominious low for the once-great magazine, tarnishing the publication’s reputation in ways likely to do lasting, irreparable harm.
…. in the course of launching his lengthy, 3,300-word attack, Ferguson publishes a series of claims with no foundation in reality …. But there’s one problem in particular that helps capture why Ferguson’s piece represents political journalism at its most atrocious.
Ferguson argues that President Obama promised the Affordable Care Act wouldn’t add to the deficit. In reality, this is a promise Obama has kept …. In order to publish this lie, Ferguson counted up the costs, ignored the savings and receipts, and presented a bogus net total….
Making matters much, much worse, Ferguson decided to challenge Krugman’s facts with an angry response, pointing to a CBO report that he’s certain proves him right.
It doesn’t. As Dylan Byers explained, “In order to get himself out of that predicament, Ferguson decides to edit the CBO report to satisfy his own conclusions…. Ferguson cut the CBO excerpt off mid-sentence and changed the meaning entirely…. So, one more time: The Oxford-trained, Harvard-employed, Newsweek contributor Niall Ferguson just edited the CBO report to change its meaning.”
What Ferguson and Newsweek published isn’t journalism; it’s a joke.
Full post here

The Atlantic: ….. In the world as Ferguson describes it, Obama is a big-spending, weak-kneed liberal who can’t get the economy turned around. Think Jimmy Carter on steroids. But the world is not as Ferguson describes it. A fact-checked version of the world Ferguson describes reveals a completely different narrative — a muddy picture of the past four years, where Obama has sometimes cast himself as a stimulator, a deficit hawk, a health care liberal and conservative reformer all at once. And it’s a world where the economy is getting better, albeit slowly.
It would have been worthwhile for Ferguson to explain why Obama doesn’t deserve re-election in this real world we actually live in. Instead, we got an exercise in Ferguson’s specialty — counterfactual history.

James Fallows: Yes, I know, you could imagine many sentences that would follow that headline. But here is what I have in mind right now: A tenured professor of history at my undergraduate alma mater has written a cover story for Daily Beast/Newsweek that is so careless and unconvincing that I wonder how he will presume to sit in judgment of the next set of student papers he has to grade.
More here

Brad DeLong: …. Fire his ass from Newsweek, and the Daily Beast. Convene a committee at Harvard to examine whether he has the moral character to teach at a university. There is a limit, somewhere. And Ferguson has gone beyond it.
Full post here

Noah Opinion: I have been known to tease a fellow blogger or two, but there is really only one writer who makes me truly mad, and that is British historian Niall Ferguson. I will explain exactly why he makes me so mad at the end of this post. First, though, I want to say a few words about Mr. Ferguson’s cover story in Newsweek magazine, entitled “Hit the Road, Barack”. I should note that it imposes a heavy psychic cost for me to do so, since it requires that I actually read Niall Ferguson. But the public duty to expose BS and promote truth and intellectual honesty overrides such selfish concerns.…. The British Empire is over, Niall. It had its day. We can debate eternally how much good it did, but now it is done, and it is not coming back. Stop trying to screw up my Republic in your doomed effort to bring it back.
Full post here (with links to other takedowns of this right wing nutjob lying scumbag)

Charles P. Pierce: I’m late to the party in regards to Niall Ferguson’s egregious cover on the weekly grocery shopper once known as Newsweek magazine ….
…. Krugman — and Jim Fallows, and Andrew Sullivan, and The Atlantic in general — are not after Ferguson because they disagree on the advisability of re-electing the president. They are after him because what he wrote was… not… true.

You know the most striking thing about Ferguson’s piece? He had to lie to make a case against PBO.

Mediaite: Speaking to Fox News’ Carl Cameron Saturday morning, Republican VP nominee Paul Ryan made the case for why he believes his foreign policy credentials are stronger than President Obama’s, emphasizing that he has been a voting member of Congress longer than the president. Ryan cited his votes in favor of the Iraq War as evidence that he has had more foreign policy experience than Obama.
“I’ve been in Congress for a number of years,” he told Cameron. “That’s more experience than Barack Obama had when he came into office.”
“I voted to send people to war,” he added.

My grandmother used to love this song!
Tnmtngirl, not too late to celebrate your birthday!! Dust off your shoulders and find something to enjoy ASAP!!
Meta’s right. Find the joy and focus on that — at least while it’s still your birthday.
Try some CHEESY PUFFS! they can work wonders ~ especially the reduced fat kind! Right, Chips?
No, no – treble fat Cheesy Puffs are best!
A www, now after these comments I am smiling…see, y’all ARE the best ever. Cheesy Puffs it is. Sesame sticks too…….pone of my favorites.
I think I need to go make a run to the grocery store.
See now, all kinds of cheesy puffs are designed to make one feel happy right away! And sesame sticks, yum yum yummmmm!
Ooooh yes… and carmel flavored rice cakes, smeared with big dollops of Nutella….
Ah screw the rice cakes, just stick your finger in the Nutella jar and go to town!
Oh Lordy, I am laughing now. THANKS!!!!! THE best medicine: TOD family.
Never had the Nutella, but my grandkids were addicted to it here all summer! Apparently it’s a normal part of “lunch” for high school kids. Who knew? Go for that, Tnmtngirl! They know what they’re talkin’ about. Happy Birthday, again.
Corporate marketing swill about the health benefits. There are no damned health benefits. Lewis Black was right to call it “chocolate-flavored nut paste” — which is what it is. But it’s ooooh so freaking good!
If they create “Nutella Lovers Anonymous” group — I should be the first in line. “Hello, my Dudette and I am a Nutella junkie!” Help me!

Repost.
Just saw a poll about PBO vs Romney’s women’s support. I thought a day or two ago there was an 11 pt difference now it is either 9 or 7 can’t remember which on Last Word. How can it be getting closer together? Too weird! It should be a huge difference given what the GOP stand for and have voted for.
Rigged up polls. Cooked up samples. Who cares?
Polls, schmolls …… Like the weather in the Pacific Northwest….. Changes all the time, heck, we can have all four seasons in ONE DAY! so, I repeat, polls schmolls…..
I saw one poll were the President had a 15 point lead with women, then there is one which says 9 point. I would like to believe it’s more.
Pay no attention. Polls go up. Polls go down. The polls will not re-elect PBO. We and a whole lot of other PEOPLE will do it.
Remember, POTUS has his own polls near by anytime of the day. He is going to be fine because we are going to be right up to his back all the way.HZ

Definitely … foreign $$$$$ flowing into US campaign coffers being among the issues they are likely tracking the Bibi, Adelson, Romney network …
Yep, there’s something fishy going on here.
The chickens are indeed coming home to roost for the GOP….
I subscribed to Newsweek for yearsssssssssss. I used to love it back in the day. But ever since it became a pathetic 24 page, schizophrenic, rag of misinformation I stopped. I’m SO glad my subscription finally petered out and stopped coming before this ass-wipe’s pure, unadulterated falsehoods showed up as a cover story. RIP NEWSWEEK.
HAHAHAHA! See what happens when you shill for the GOP Piers?
As they say Piers, it takes one to know one.
The Republican Party views are the same as Todd Adkins. That includes Romney and Ryan.
That whole Niall Ferguson article was such a bloody propagandist joke! I’ve been enjoying reading the rebuttals all day today. That Newsweek and Tina Brown would stoop to such lows is disheartening. But the upside is that a lot of good writers are countering his disgusting lies. There’s hope. And what Charles Pierce points out is so true… these people are disagreeing with him not because they believe Obama should be re-elected (which, I hope after researching for the articles, is the conclusion they come to), but because it’s yellow journalism of the highest order!
Shame on Newsweek!

Regarding Atkin, we need to follow the lead of PBO and the campaign — when an opponent is self destructing, shut up and get the heck out of the way! Unfortunately, the pre-mature outcry may very well lead to Atkin dropping out before 5:00pm tomorrow. If that happens, I’ll bet dollars to donuts he’s replaced with a sane sounding, ultra conservative woman; that would not bode well for Claire… Look at the feed from our campaign favs, they’ve pretty much gone radio silent.
Short version — we would have done better to just remain silent until 5:01pm Tuesday…
Hope in the future, we’ll consider timing of our response.
He can withdraw much later than this – has to pay for reprinting ballot papers

Le’ts not go back to the 50′ – there wasn’t much good going on in that era for anyone who had extra melanin in their skin, spoke a different language, worshipped differently than the majority or had two-x chromosomes, for that matter.
Let’s just adopt reasonablepolicies and tax rates that don’t decimate the middle class in favor of the monied 1%.
Lawrence O’Donnell just teased his next segment which will be about the bills that Todd Akin and Paul Ryan have worked on together. Everyone should be aware that Paul Ryan made skid marks running away from Todd Akin today. I would be shocked if any of the jackals in the White Press Corps would have the gust to ask Paul Ryan what has suddenly changed. His voting record shows how radical Paul Ryans beliefs are about women’s reproductive rights. Paul Ryan apparently cosponsored a bill personhood bill. Lawrence is pulling back the curtain and exposing Paul Ryan’s record.
Lawrence is doing what the MSM fails to do. The MSM is hoping that Akin simply drops out of the race and disappears from the face of the earth so that they can continue their shilling for Ryan/Romney. NOT THIS TIME.
For you, Lh … for reminding me to include the jackals on the list of recipients
Thank you dear. You never cease to amaze me. You zeroed in on exactly what I was thinking. Akin and Ryan are joined at the hip. We have to make him own that. No amount of distancing can erase the fact that Paul Ryan’s beliefs about women’s reproductive rights are radical and extreme. Again, this is an indictment of the mainstream media. The American people just don’t know the number of bills the GOP has voted on relating to abortion instead of jobs. And how about the 33 times that they voted to repeal Obamacare. This should be common knowledge for the American people.
Thank you Lh and agree, totally. We the People are the only messengers interested in preserving and extending our democracy. We’ll get the job done. It’s the American way
I will try to make the zuchini fries some day soon. Sounds delish, and is a healthy alternative.
New Frontiers of Extremism
Republicans are frantically trying to get Representative Todd Akin to drop out of the United States Senate race in Missouri after his remark about abortion and rape, but not because it was offensive and ignorant. They’re afraid he might lose and cost them a chance at a Senate majority next year. He would surely be replaced by a Republican who sounds more reasonable but holds similarly extreme views on abortion, immigration, gay rights and the role of government because those are the kinds of candidates the party nominates these days in state after state.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/21/opinion/new-frontiers-of-extremism-from-the-gop.html?_r=1&smid=tw-share
I think Akin’s presence could cost the GOP more than the Senate. He co-sponsored 8 anti-abortion bills with Paul Ryan. Akin could be tied around the neck of Ryan and everyone who co-sponsored or voted in favor of his legislation, so that they lose up and down ticket. He’s potentially as toxic as Mark Foley was a few election cycles ago.
The GOP’s strong negative reaction to Akin’s comments have absolutely nothing to do with Akin, and everything to do with how they fear his remarks will affect Paul Ryan’s standing and other GOP congressional hopefuls.
DAmn..what is this guy’s problem again? What pleasure or pay is he getting from doing this? Sorry about this Chips! WordPress is a pain and a half.
He’s a piece of work Hopefruit! I’m still trying to find a way of leaving WordPress … ie an easy way for clueless techy people like myself
You’re right Chips. After taking a second look I’m seeing that everything is “reblogged” from some other site. That’s unacceptable along with his hostile attitude, and Mr “Obamacrat” or whoever is running that site needs to be held accountable for PLAGARISM!
Why is WordPress enabling this?
The worst thing, Hopefruit, is that he’s obviously a smart guy, so I don’t know why he doesn’t make his own original contributions to the pro-PBO effort, instead of just stealing everyone else’s stuff. It’s hard not to conclude that this is a traffic driving exercise, ego-fueled.
Chips, I just went to his site and left a couple questions: Why are you stealing and would you want people to steal from you. I’ll check back later to see if he responds.
Yes, and he’s lazy with poor ethics.
Hey Chips, if you shared this exact sample with the folks in WordPress do you think they would be open to evaluating? My guess is they didn’t think through that this new feature would create this problem. I know you said you reached out to them but they were not responsive and didn’t seem to be willing to find a solution but I would guess that they didn’t expect anyone like this guy to do what he is doing. So a copy and paste to provide a visual of the actual problem could be helpful. Is there a number to call for the WordPress folks so you can talk through the problem as well? Maybe you would have better results if you were able to connect directly to discuss.
Wait – Chips I may have found something. I went digging through the forums and found the attached statements.

From the WordPress.com Support section on Content Theft – What to Do:
Every day, bloggers are victimized (whether they are aware of it or not) by having their content stolen, scraped, and unlawfully copied. This is unfortunate, as we understand how much you value your personal content and hard work. When this happens, and the culprit is a member of WordPress.com, we take immediate action, ensuring that your content is rightfully protected.

Yep, our hope is that by giving people a one-click way to tell their audience about something interesting they found and sending all the traffic and links back to the original blogger that cases where people, knowingly or unknowingly, copy and pasted too much content will decline.
Then I found the WordPress guy, Matt’s direct contact page. http://mattnt.com/2012/01/22/2893/
It shows Matt’s twitter id and he has an Ask Me Anything form.
Hope it helps.
LOL.
Chips, can a reblogger edit what they steal? If no, how about calling him out on each post…
I see Dudette made that suggestion… LOL
Amazingly Alycee, yes – they can edit what they copy … another fantastic WordPress feature
Chica, What about using DISQUS? I have no idea how all of this works, and I’m sure all of the system have their pros and cons. DISQUS does have an edit feature…
Thanks Isonprize! DISQUS might certainly cure the comments’ glitches, so definitely worth looking in to. But I just severely want to leave WP, asap, it’s crap. Need to find a techy wizard to help me out, working on it!
There is absolutely no difference. If anything Paul Ryan is more extreme.
“Paul Ryan, however, believes that the “forcible rape” language does not actually go far enough to force women to carry their rapist’s baby. Ryan believes that abortion should be illegal in all cases except for “cases in which a doctor deems an abortion necessary to save the mother’s life.” So rape survivors are out of luck.”
http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/19/712251/how-todd-akin-and-paul-ryan-partnered-to-redefine-rape/?mobile=nc
I am looking forward to the VP debates, where Ryan can defend his extremism.
Good ol Zack Braff..thanks, UT!
I kept seeing this dumb poll popping up everywhere——with screaming headlines—–”Obama could lose Illinois!” I think it originated at Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller and went screaming and flashing on Drudge—–and as I was trying to check on it, found that it is literally on 100′s of web sites. Just unbelievable. All stemming from some supposed pollster Michael McKeon—–a former Guiliani staffer and adviser to Pataki—-no one mentioned that—–who found that Obama was only leading in Cook Co. by 49-37—-and that meant big troubs for him in Illinois. And I find out they polled 62% white—-in Cook Co.!—24% black and 10% Hispanic. Now that’s a poll that has a lot of believability—ha! And that Obama leads with Dems 79 to 8, and 70 to 5 with AAs. And so pollster concludes that the undecideds are really hurting Obama, that 25% of AAs may not vote for Romney—-hahahaha—–but they’re likely not to vote at all!!! That was the conclusion of this very stupid poll that has zero integrity. And it was blasted about everywhere. Idiot times.
These News Websites are are all jacked up for any negative Obama story. That is what they ate ALL paid to do.
The Soviets did this to their People, during the Cold War.
Google it. Its what the GOP are doing.
I am growing more and more distrustful of polls. Only a very few seem to use careful techniques. Any poll of Illinois that gives this result has to be highly suspect. Senator Obama won the state by some 60+% when he ran, and won the state as President by at least that much. He won southern Illinois….which no one thought he could. It seems that so many groups want to get on the polling bandwagon, and really don’t know what they’re doing.
The way I figure it…..these polls keep Democrats on the edge, not complacent so will keep us working harder. We will see polls all over the place before November. It happened four years ago too.
It’s been quite some time since I agreed with MMFlint on any issue..but tonight I have to agree with him on this one
Robney:
“When our men and woman are in harm’s way, I expect the president of the United States to address the nation on a regular basis and explain what’s happening and why they’re there, what the mission is, what its purpose is, how we’ll know when it’s completed,” Romney said. “Other presidents have done this. We haven’t heard this president do this.”

It is too late tonight and I am too exhausted; plus I want more people to read it.
Sweet birthday dreams tnmtgirl! See ya tomorrow.
,,… and dines on a sack of festering weasel rectums….
Well done soldier!
PPP polled Mo. today—Akin has same 1 point lead as before even tho 75% of Repubs disapproved of his statements. People are dug in——and Rove’s anti-McCaskill ads have been running there nonstop. Of course, I don’t know who was answering the phone during the day today—-are people responding to polls at work?—-but…..
Akin has already lost 8 points advantage – and it’s still early. He will continue to slide because he will no longer have funding and support from the RNC etc. If the GOP is supporting him, it will negatively affect the bigger ticket, Ryan/Romney as well as downticket for house and senate races. So either Akin drops out, or remains and costs the GOP several other house/senate seats, and most importantly the Presidency.
Amazing how the fucking pollsters are trying to say that within 24 hours of exposing this islamo-fascist that people are not changing their minds. Let’s see this cretin’s numbers after a week.
Exactly – the story is barely out for Pete’s sake!
These events take time to work in people’s minds. An immediate poll is too soon.
I thought she was much further behind than that. If she uses this info properly, she can get ahead and stay there. She and other Dems have to continue to tie to Paul Ryan also. I’ve seen a few do it on Twitter.
I’m looking forward to Priorties USA and VP Joe Biden making sure everyone knows that Ryan and Akin are legislative soulmates.
Good night guys.
Oh I Think He May Be Staying
I had read that he was 11 points ahead of McCasskill so it looks like she’s coming up. And, it’s still a irrevocable gift that ties him, ryan, and the gop to the WAR ON WOMEN.
Looks like Nightline is going to have a segment on the Kids State Dinner.
Good! Thx dotster..

She was so adorable on the phone:) We had a great conversation….I had some intense conversations tonight…not bad for the President, at all…just intense. People want to talk and get info.

Oh Mr. Romney — you were looking for campaign divisiveness and hate, right? Well, you forgot to turn your head TO THE RIGHT — here ya go!

Virginia Republicans Call for Armed Revolution if Obama Wins in November

Well shut my mouth! This is a bet I sure ’nuff would’ve lost. Did their on-air staff not get the memo?

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp Has Donated Almost $59,000 to Reelect Obama
http://www.politicususa.com/rupert-murdochs-news-corp-donated-59000-reelect-obama.html
“Fox News and Rupert Murdoch’s other News Corp properties hate Obama so much that they have donated nearly $59,000 so far this year to reelect him.
According to Open Secrets, News Corp has donated $504,162 to individuals and PAC’s. The surprise comes in who the individual is that has gotten the most money from News Corp. President Obama has received $58,825 from News Corp. The top eight recipients of News Corp cash are the president and congressional committee chairpersons. News Corp must not think much of Mitt Romney’s chances because they have only donated $2,750 to the Republican nominee in 2012.
While Rupert Murdoch’s personal donations have gone to Republicans, News Corp understands that keeping Barack Obama in power is good for business. The delicious irony is that some of the revenue earned from viewers and readers that can’t stand President Obama is being used to help reelect Barack Obama.
Rupert Murdoch didn’t build an empire by being dumb. He knows that if Mitt Romney were to beat Obama, his business would suffer. Murdoch is in the anti-Obama business, which means that he needs four more years of Obama in order to keep his profits up. News Corp’s congressional donations are pretty standard stuff. The big media companies shower money on the committee chairpersons who regulate their industries. Those donations slide back and forth between the parties depending on who has the majority, but the presidential donations are a different story.
News Corp is betting on an Obama victory in November. As they are selling Mitt Romney to their viewers, News Corp is giving money to his opponent. This juicy little fact is something that you will never hear Bill O’Reilly or Sean Hannity disclose on the air. The next time somebody on Fox News makes you mad, just remember that some of those dollars they are earning with their anti-Obama propaganda are being used to help give the nation four more years of Obama leadership.
Who would have thought that some of the biggest Obama Bots of all run News Corp?
Atlanta’s own Cynthia Tucker on Tweety talking about Todd the Cretin Akin = FIYAH!

MSNBC wanna add some gravitas to your lineup? Dump SE Cupp and give Cynthia Tucker the show she deserves!!
Dudette, I agree with you about SE Cupp and Cynthia Tucker .
Great tweets. Both RT’ed. Pity that it’s left to us bloggers to edumacate the ‘murkan voters. Effing media.
GOOD MORNING, GOOD MORNING!! I have great news. I am going to see the First Lady tomorrow in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I am so excited. I hope to take pictures and give you guys a good recap of what is happening in South Florida. I am not leaving without pictures.
Last time, I didn’t get pictures at all. PBO had an energy rally at University of Miami & security was extremely tight. I couldn’t get pictures of him but wanted something to remember that event. A lot of us tried to get pictures of the Beast to no avail. We later found out that there was a threat and they put something on the car and wouldn’t allow for pictures.
I will be waiting for your report Renegades522/AuntSis.
Totally cool!
so envious…have a great day!
Robney out with another Welfare ad, saying welfare leads to cycle of dependency.
I guess, this is his whole campaign.
Very racial, he does not care.
This will all come out in the debates, a huge opportunity fir the President, to set the record straight.
Which is why the Right is trying to play the Refs. Which is why their Super PAC is releasing tv ads in the debates, the other side knows that the debates are a huge opportunity fir the President(because the GOP is lying) and they are trying to get out in front of it.
Also, Akin released a new video, asking Missouri Voters for forgiveness. He is staying.
If Akin is staying, OFA could release an ad tomorrow tying RAyn to Akin.
Nope. Halperin says we are lying about Robney on abortion. That is their comeback, that we are lying, even though Robney is on tape, saying all these nutty things about Planned Parenthood etc.
I don’t think OFA gives a donkey’s ass what Halperin “Excellent-news-for-McCain” sez when deciding to release their ads. The truth is the truth and Obama’s ads speak the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Akin=Ryan=Robney=GOP=Akin. Halperin and Robney have absolutely no credible comeback on this issue. NONE.
for Dems, Akin should stay exactly where he is – in the Sen race
staying in race will draw national attention to it and hopfully Dem Sen MC can prevail in the end
Oh Boy! Joe Phucking Klein is on tv, Mr. Both sides do it…
Btw- Richard Wolfe always sticks up for our President, he is one of us.
Just sayin.
I get all my updates of the beltway chatter from Jovie’s updates early each morning. thanks
Every time I see Klein I think of men that do not have good grooming habits….
HAHAHA! LMAO. You are holding back Linda, you are really holding back!
Far more women in Iowa say today that Mitt Romney is “too conservative on women’s issues” than did in April, according to polling data collected by the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action.
Romney and Paul Ryan have come under a sustained attack from Democrats over their views on abortion and funding Planned Parenthood. This week, the whole GOP is rushing to contain the fallout from Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin’s comments about abortion and rape – an incident that party leaders fear could further alienate women.
If you needed another illustration of the stakes involved, consider this data from another Midwestern battleground: In April, Iowa women said by a 6-point margin (42 percent to 36 percent) that Mitt Romney wasn’t too conservative on women’s issues.
Now, by a 16-point margin (52 percent to 36 percent), they say that Romney is “too conservative on issues involving women’s rights, and would put too many restrictions on women getting the health care services they need.”

Not good news for Romney. I guess Ms. Ann is just useless in that regard. What about his “Women for Romney” group? No where to be found?
Rev Al and Steve Forbes is going at it on Tv!
Steve Forbes sounds like an idiot, Free Market, Free Market, Free Market is God, big Government Bad/Evil!
Ha ha ha ha!
Femaile caller on Bill Press Show notes that in the midst of all this noise about Todd Akin, not a word from “Larry, Mo, and Curly — Lieberman, McCain and Graham” (they’re usually the first ones to blow their ho tair around) and “no word from Blunt of MO either.”
hot air
Chips is going to have to do a Byron Tau Morning Speed read again. According to Byron, their are No good stories in the World and it’s all the Presidents fault!
Ha, I saw that Jovie! Same yesterday, ALL negative stuff about PBO. He improved for a while, so I’m guessing his Politico masters told him to stop being a proper reporter and go back to PBO-bashing.
TOD Poetry Hour:
Democrats’ faults are many
Republicans have only two
Everything they say
And everything they do.
Love that. . . will tweet!
Morning everyone:
