Charles Pierce: I was driving most of yesterday and, therefore, only got the news piecemeal of Willard Romney’s descent to previous unplumbed depths in a racist bathysphere of how own devising. I felt a little out of the loop until I was presented with the comforting familiarity of what a dipshit Mark Halperin is:
“After reading a lot of tweets, listening to some talk radio, and watching some cable TV, I can say that this Romney/birther moment is representative of the whole, horrible campaign cycle we are in. The level of vitriol and personal animus that exists on both sides over the flap is truly discouraging.”
…. Jesus, these people…

Elspeth Reeve (Atlantic Wire): The recent direction of Mitt Romney’s campaign may seem perplexing — the candidate’s birther joke, those ads accusing Obama of gutting welfare reform, John Sununu’s jab that Obama needs to learn how to be American, and veep pick Paul Ryan’s s pride at bitterly clinging to guns and God — but it can all be explained with just one number: 61 percent, which is the share of the white vote Romney needs to win.
…. if the Republican primary taught us anything — think back to Donald Trump’s birther bubble and Newt Gingrich’s South Carolina victory after doubling down on his charge that Obama is the “food stamp president” — these racially tinged campaign barbs are sure crowd pleasers among white Republicans.
…. In other words, Romney needs to be more loved by white people and Obama needs to be more disliked by them for Romney to win. Romney made a step toward that goal Friday with his birther joke, “No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.” Romney defended his comments, saying of his mostly-white audience, “the crowd loved it and got a good laugh.”

Colbert I King (Washington Post): Mitt and Ann Romney are deluding themselves if they believe that calls for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to release more of his income tax returns are simply a campaign instigated by Barack Obama’s supporters….
…. voters want to know why this fantastically rich seeker of the presidency is being so secretive about his tax payments and how he made his money.
Does he have something to hide?
If everything in his tax returns is above reproach, why won’t Romney follow the bipartisan tradition established by the presidential campaign of his father, George Romney, in 1968, and release more of them?
It’s not enough for Romney to say he’s paid all taxes that are “legally required.” A person who wants to be president should also be able to say, and to demonstrate, that no ethical lines have been crossed.
Romney has offshore accounts. Voters are within their rights to ask why this man who wants to be president would divert income from U.S. financial institutions to foreign tax havens.

Washington Post: As Jamila Gatlin waited in line at a northside Milwaukee elementary school to cast her ballot June 5 in the proposed recall of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, she noticed three people in the back of the room. They were watching, taking notes.
Officially called “election observers,” they were white. Gatlin, and almost everyone else in line, was black.
“That’s pretty harassing right there, if you ask me,” Gatlin said in the hall outside the gym. “Why do we have to be watched while we vote?”
Two of the observers were from a Houston-based group called True the Vote, an offshoot of the Houston tea party known as the King Street Patriots. Their stated goal is to prevent voter fraud, which the group and founder Catherine Engelbrecht claims is undermining free and fair elections.
…. “If you listen to all their rhetoric, it’s clear what their intent is,” Ray said. “Their intent is to try to act out on this belief … they have that the only reason Barack Obama got elected is because a bunch of ‘those’ people cheated on their ballot.”

Morning everyone

Whhooo!
Congrats UT, looks like a 3 way tie
A three way-tie? Holy smokes
Congrats UT, Japa and Suzette!! Okay, three it is!
Awww….you picked the best of the best. Thanks Chips.
They are ridiculously cute in this picture. It’s like they are going on the prom!!
awwwww so cute
Good morning all
morning all
Oh my…three gold medalists. Congratuations UT, Suzette and Japa for # 1!
G’morning Chips, TOD and everyone. Happy Saturday
Hi Hopefruit 2. Thanks and happy Saturday to you too.
I was just watching videos above, especially love the one on “The Romney Bunch”.
Morning Hopefruit, morning everyone
GM folks. Gunnite folks.
Oi, what about afternoon and evening? This is a multi-time-zone kinda place. PS Hellooooooo amk.
I am off to dinner with family, sis & and her family, mom and aunt (who had heart surgery) and hence the gunnite.
Ah, okay amk, enjoy your dinner, see ya later.
Just so you don’t miss me…
Marriage is a three ring circus: an engagement ring, a wedding ring, and suffering.
GO TO DINNER NOW!!!!
Say hello to your wimmin!
Dang, Word Press, gets me everytime. Morning All!!
Jonathan Alter must have gotten blasted on Twitter, hence the apology.
Yep. He got beat up pretty badly yesterday, and deservedly so. The push back was swift.
Jonathan…..
You have a negative personality…….everything is always gloom and doom with you…..when you come on TV I mute the volume.
Please just be quiet…
Good morning everyone.
Steven Rattner @SteveRattner
Oh, the irony. Gawker — self-righteous pubisher of Romney financial data — is owned by offshore corporation.
If Steven Rattner doesn’t see a difference between Gawker and someone running for President, he’s even more stupid than I think.
He’ll have plenty of time to complain about it on MJ.
Romney would change the tax code….there’s a big difference.
Ask him if Gawker is on the ballot in November……
Chipsticks, this is a fantastic morning round-up. I’m delving into everything but I gotta say Charles Pierce wins the day with his description of Mark Halperin – “dipshit.”
Thanks a million UT, the “dipshit” made my morning, grumpy devil that he can be, I flippin’ ADORE Charles Pierce!
Hehe yes….the perfect description….
I see Chris Hayes is showing us all data this Morning that proves Democrats are just as Racist as Republicans.
I see!
Actually, he was saying that when people are asked about their opinions on certain race issues, DEMS and REPUBS poll roughly the same, but when you look at the reality of how the ethnic groups are represented in each party, that’s when you notice a difference.
He showed clips from the DEM rallies vs the Repub rallies and then compared the racial breakdown of the DNC delegates, RNC delagates, relative to the general population at large, and showed that the composition of DNC delegates approximates that of the general population, race -wise. But the RNC has by proportion far fewer AAs than you would expect given the population composition.
He didn’t say that. He said that you may be white and a self described hung-ho liberal but data shows that you have some prejudices against Black people. He is right. Look at how ape shit some white liberals are about Pres. Obama. They act as though they own him.
I would caution against this kind of divisive rhetoric. We need everyone, white and black and brown and all colors to vote for President Obama. There are certain forces, and not Dem LIberals, who have been trying to make Obama the black president for black people since he came on the scene. If they succeed, and others aid in that effort, we lose. We will need again the educated white population, a majority of white women, in order to be successful in November. President Obama has made it continually clear that he is the president of ALL the people, because he is and because this is an important message politically.
100% right!
I agree Dotster, well stated.
True! Good Statement!!
It’s not divisive when it has some truth to it. It may be uncomfortable for you to admit, but there are elements of truth and even you can’t deny it.
Agreed there is some truth to it. Just look at the 2008 Democratic Primaries where racist dog whistle politics was used by the Clinton campaign against PBO in Pennsylvania, West Virginia etc. Then is the general election campaign, Palin took the “racist baton” and purposefully picked at the scab covering the wound of America’s racist past. Appealing to racists was a desperate move then and it is a desperate move now with Mitt.
I agree. All you have to do is look at the so-called liberal sites and see the emo-progs carrying on. They not only act like they own him, they condescndingly instruct him on the proper way to be President
Hey Guys,
All of the points made here may be true. The important thing to remember is that these attitudes do not belong to our President! President Obama gets it about human beings. He understands the possibility of holding two competing attitudes. He understands we can be limited by our experiences, and still have love for one another. He understands the importance of everyday living such that we treat each other as we want to be treated. In his book “Dreams From My Father,” he talks about his Grandmother being afraid of black men. He knew his Grandmother loved him, and he recognized the limitations her life taught her. But, she was not mean and nasty. These folks on the republican side at this time in our history are mean and nasty. So, let’s treat each other with dignity and respect. We can learn how to become the “ones we have been waiting for!”
Here is the latest failed attempt: an interview in Parade magazine, in which Ann and Mitt oh-so-humbly explain just how giving they really are because they’ve paid their required tithing to their church
Ann Romney: I know this money is an indication of how much we trust God and love the principle of sacrifice.
Love the principle of sacrifice??
I guess hiding millions and millions in foreign accounts not to pay taxes is how they love the principle of sacrifice.
Geez they’re pathetic.
You know, this whole tithing thing is really irritating me!
Tithing isn’t some MORMON thing that makes them somehow superior (like they think).
Tithing is biblical and I am not a Mormon, but I try really hard to tithe to my Protestant church.
Tithing can be hard when you can’t rely on your offshore accounts to supplement your available cash.
Again, they use that “tithe” word like it was their church’s idea.
Errrgg.
Obama/Biden 2012
Yes, Grabampa…..my Protestant church also preaches tithing, and we practice it. No big deal…..we don’t advertise or brag about it. I also know people who REALLY DID sacrifice to give that ten percent! The Romneys didn’t. The more Queen Ann talks, the more out of touch with real people we see that she is. Tithing is supposed to be between the person and God. It is not a Public Relations ploy!
These people are beneath contempt.
Exactly!!!
Giving money doesn’t mean dipshit, a sinner can give money. Explain to me how you can love the Lord so much and yet lie like you do.I have never seen a politician lie lie Mitt Romney.
Lie like Mitt Romney does.
Note that there might be another angle to this “We don’t produce tax returns because it shows how much we pay in tithes to the Church”.
It just might be that the Church has a completely different opinion on what is “income” than the IRS – so while their *tax rate* might be legally OK, their “tithe rate” might be way too low.
Disclaimer: This is speculation.
Have a great day all. I wanted to post a thank you to all that donated to my FR page. I cannot log in to OFA to send a personal thank you as I have been banned from the site.
Peace and Love from a Rainy South Florida. Off to work now.
Have a great “O” day.
Crikey Proud, why did they ban you??
WHAT? Why on earth?
GM Chipsssssssss…GM TOD…
i loveeeeee that comment….
Watching various reports, including the AP report, it is obvious that Romney’s “gaffe” yesterday is definitely being tied to the birthr movement. When when they mention that is was just supposed to be a joke, it is obvious they know it wasn’t.
Yeah Japa, I think they doth protest too much – the more they insist it was a joke, as you said, the more obvious it is they know exactly what it was all about.
Romney said they needed a little humor in the campaign….
So I guess their idea of humor is racism.
Hiya ChristiMTL, you know, they’re running out of people to hate: all ‘non-whites’ (as they’d put it), women, ‘forinars’, Muslims, etc, etc, etc. All that hating must be exhausting.
Hey Chips……ha! good point….running out of people to hate……that’s pretty much it
Jay Smooth had the best take on the Romney “joke”:
“He was cleaning his dog whistle and it just went off.”
And the fact that he has invited SEVEN Birthers to be primary speakers at the RNC GOP Convention in Tampa is not helping in this case.
Arpaio, Trump and other birthers speaking at the rnc convention. This was no gaffe. This is now rnc policy.
The question is not what Romney meant by his Birther comment…the question is why did he get such rousing applause from the crowd…it was a gut reaction to his comments…why??…in my opinion and it is an opinion…when whites question the birhright of the President …they question not only MY birthright…but the birthright of allllll Blk folks…
the reason why, in my opinion, the birther issue stands evern after three years is because for some white folks blk folks are not and never will be true Americans…
and this deep seated racism is what the GOP hopes to use to steal the white house…
Hi Prettyfoot, as Michael Tomasky mentioned yesterday, “as Think Progress points out in a tweet, is something a joke if people don’t really laugh but cheer?”
Before yesterday, I thought I couldn’t loathe Romney and the GOP any more.
hey Ms Chipssss….
i read and am rereading the piece by…Mr Coates….Fear of a Black President
i find the piece on point in may ways…
this statement (one of many) stands out for me..
Barack Obama governs a nation enlightened enough to send an African American to the White House, but not enlightened enough to accept a black man as its president.
********************************
there are others…his piece is worth reading….
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/09/fear-of-a-black-president/309064/2/
I was sickened by the people behind Willard who erupted in joyous applause, especially the 2 young guys who pumped their fists, so thrilled that Willard had gone birther, made it ok for their hateful, cockeyed beliefs. Reminded me of when Palin made racism ok, and the racists flocked to her appearances with their misspelled racist signs, toting stuffed monkeys.
Me too Dotster, there was one guy in particular I noticed whose response to the ‘joke’ was pure venomous joy, it would just make you sick to the stomach and chronically depressed.
How do you NOT let it get to you?
Whenever the crowd “boos” at an Obama rally, PBO say don’t boo–VOTE.,,,or when the crowd “boos” when Robme is mentioned, the President says he is a “good family man, loves his country, etc.,” you NEVER hear the press or Robme’s campagin say anything positive about the President. They welcome the hate and the press ignores the hate.
I worry when I start to feel so bitter about this country.
me too gcwp1….then I see the people who greet PBO and FLOTUS with much joy and love at rallys….when I meet total strangers of ALL races who say how much they love the president….it gives me great pride and hope. It makes me believe that the haters that follow Robme and Ryan are a very small percentage of our country and how Europe and Canadians have embraced our President sometimes I think more than his fellow citizens.
Thank you 0388jojothecat. I needed that!
The sight that deeply depressed ME most was that of 3 Habit Wearing Nuns, cheering and clapping. As a Roman Catholic, with admiration to all the Nuns that were in my life, over my entire life, that was a knife through my heart.
The females in the habits were early Halloween costume wearers. Surely they couldn’t be representatives of truth and fairness.
God bless you Chips for wading where we TODers don’t have to.
Those racists need to be thoroughly repudiated this November, and sent back to their holes – otherwise, it’s never going to be ok. This black man (who happens to be completely awesome and eminently qualified to be President and will go on to bigger and better things where he no longer has to deal with idiots), needs to have two full terms, and a Congress he can work with – and be correctly noted in history as one of the best presidents (and most stellar human being) ever experienced by this country. Including those who don’t deserve him.
I am still seething from yesterday. I never thought I’d loathe anyone more than I loathed Sarah Palin. Only to find that there are plenty more and plenty worse where she came from – she is not an anomaly.
Good point prettyfoot58. GOP efforts to disenfranchise AA’s further supports your argument (only REAL Americans can vote). This birth certificate stuff is an attempt to delegitimize the presidency of PBO. PBO is the culmination of all of the worst fears of America’s racist underbelly. PBO is an extremely intelligent Black Man who consistently beats these devils at their own game. The economic downturn combined with PBO’s election has raised the level of white male insecurity and anxiety to alarming levels. It is not rational, it is pure hatred which is born out fear.
This was another of Mittster’s “carefully chosen” crowd. He was in MICHIGAN for crap’s sake and it was his typically snowy white crowd. When the President speaks the crowd is always diverse. Always. Compare the pictures out of campaign events and you have to shake your head in amazement.
Slowwriter…
This is what continues to give me hope in the future of our country…that the President can bring together folks from all cornersof our country to move in the same direction in order to move our country from the dark into the light…and this more than anything frightens the powers behind the GOP who continue to use the politics of fear and racism to try to enslave us all…including those who cheered loudly at the birther comment from Romney…
Now, Robney wants to talk about his HC law, saying it’s better than the Presidents.
Are you kidding me?
If this is his Feeble attempt at going to the middle, it’s pretty weak!
Remember A Romney surrogate tried that twice during the Joe Soptic ads were the topics of DC/NY journos heartburn. The right came out screaming and the Romney wusses backed down.
I like this tweet,
LOLGOP @LOLGOP
The liberal media is out to get Todd Akin if by the liberal media you mean cameras and microphones.
Outstanding!!!
So, now the President has Dog whistles against who? Himself?-
Halperin is attempting to placate the Baggers with the- both sides do it meme.
I can’t wait for Nov 6, right after PBO gives his victory speech to tell that Dick “Good News for Mitt Romney!”
Halperin who on a radio XM appearance called Mr. Obama, a pussy and a wuss and then on Mourning Joke, called pres Obama a Dick….is a pathetic wicked crude idiot. Unless Halperin is projecting his perverseness, his obsessiveness with certain human parts is disturbing, especially, when his sexuality is a total blank;—-}?
I believe GOPolitico fired a black journalist just for saying that willard was comfortable around white people. MSNBC still has halperin on after saying such awful things about the POTUS… it’s sickening.
But the media insist that there is no racism is involved in the two cases you cited.
he has no creditability….NONE!
and i tweeted that to him and told him to sit down and be quiet…
Bob Cesca has Halperin’s number:
http://thedailybanter.com/2012/08/mark-halperin-is-always-wrong/
Great article.
What is the single issue on which Mr. Romney has never flip-flopped? He stands doggedly firm on never ever releasing his tax returns.
Why?
With so many questions swirling around Romney’s byzanatine financial dealings, voters are left with very little real information about this very secretive man, who is running for the most important elected position in the world
.
Obama has released 12 years of tax returns
GW Bush10 years
Clinton 12 years
GHW Bush 14 years
and George Romney 12 years.
It is not just liberals who want to see Romney’s tax returns.
It is 63% of American voters who do.
The longer Mr. Romney delays, the more suspicious it appears.
What is the problem, Mr. Romney? Release your tax returns.
hf, RT’d and fav’d!
Thanks meta. My tolerance for those kinds of “panels” is wearing real thin right now. This would have been a perfect opportunity to address the nasty tone of racial rhetoric that has been spewed all around since this President took office, from Rush Limbaugh’s daily rants, to the Teaparty “lyin’ African” rallies, to the continuous and escalating racist dog whistles of the Mitt Romney’s campaign (welfare ads, birther assocition, etc). They could have brought in someone like Tim Wise, one of the few bloggers who has shown a willingness and ability to address racism as it exists in his own community with a very critical and non-evasive orientation.
Instead, the panel is loaded with YOUNG AA intellectuals/media figures and quickly disintegrates into another “Obama must do this-Obama-didn’t do-that” disappointment fest. Not one honest, critical assessment of why Mitt Romney would feel he can gain electoral ground in 2012 America by resorting to racist invective on the campaign. Not one honest, critical assessment of why the GOP on one hand is busy trying to distance itself from Todd Akin, but happily embraces SEVEN birthers who are getting prime speaking assignments at their major convention next week.
Wasn’t it Mitt Romney’s Birther reference yesterday that prompted this panel in the first place? So how the hell did the discussion find itself on President Obama, and how he has disappointed AAs, or how AAs expected him to be their savior, etc? Where is the focus on Mitt Romney, who is currently running for President and could potentially be the next President of the United States????!?!?!?!?
WOW, what a load of drivel that passes for analysis on teevee these days. Can’t stomach it for even a moment. Racism is always discussed from the point of view of the minority as pejorative. To speak of Romney’s racism is to admit that he has not examined the precise reason he can make the ultra-privileged claim that he is never asked for his birth certificate. He is always – ALWAYS – missing the entire point of the problem in the first place, utterly clueless about just about everything. That’s why he and his wife can go on teevee and talk about their “sacrifice” and “you people” and it being “their turn” and think they are going to get over. Pure BS.
This constant and willful dishonesty will eventually be the ruin of America. You can’t live on lies forever. All but the most uneducated, racist RW sheep cannot and will not feed on that.
This country is expert in avoiding frank discussions of race and America’s racial hierarchy. Most whites don’t want to have the discussion and most blacks realize that such a talk can be a career killer. The only mainstream white politician I heard speak openly about “white privilege” was former Sen. Bill Bradley during his presidential run. PBO’s “Race Speech” in Philly during the 2008 primaries was the most honest discussion of the resentment some in this country feel toward AA’s and the anger many AA’s feel toward the country they love for failing to live up to its professed ideals. Thankfully, the younger generation seems to be trending away from this worldview. We will have a generation of kids whose first memory of a US President will be PBO. The importance and impact of this cannot be overstated, imho.
Beautifully put, EricFive. Thank you. I think often about the long-term impact of PBO’s presidency on the attitudes and cultural norms of this nation. When I see all the children embracing both POTUS and FLOTUS so warmly and openly, it gives me such tremendous hope.
1001% reflective of the topic discussed up the thread. Humans, especially we Americans as AG Eric Holder said in 2009/2010 are cowards when it comes to the discussion of race. For racism to be a dying issue, people have got to be willing to honestly confront them. Those looking for pres Obama to be the one to lead the discussion as just as mad.
brilliant response!
but i think the dialogue was important and informative…there was an attempt to deal with the fundamental elements of racism…
no one show can discuss the notion of white supremacy…white privilege…disenfranchisements…et al…it takes an ongoing discussion and probing….
it is very complicated and using the word complicated does not adequately describe the notion of racism and racial politics…
but i am glad for the discussion…
Not complicated at all. We just lack the Will and the total honesty that are needed.
Romney is a rotten actor – the way his face screws up, his voice and squirmy manner. A blind man could have heard his birther comments yesterday and understood that they were deliberate and rehearsed. But don’t lets take the bait let’s keep hammering the taxes. I also think it’s good to remind people what taxes are used for – like the military and veterans benefits. Romney wants to start more wars and in addition to sending ‘you people’s’ children to fight he expects others to foot the bill. Disgusting – he must be the least patriotic candidate for President that has presented himself in decades. The difference between him and PBO – PBO loves his country and supports and protects it – in every way including financially.
Philadelphia Inquirer poll released Saturday reports Barack Obama leads Mitt Romney in Pennsylvania, 51 percent to 42 percent.
But please do not tell Alex Witt, CNN and whatever media that keeps picking and selecting whatever polls that support a close tight race. If the race is wide open, No one would watch? Right?
This is mind boggling. 25 Volunteers here at The local OFA office in Clearwater.
Exactly what is the media talking about when they say enthusiasm gap?
Or is it a pushed talking point from Robney Camp?
The media is LYING! I have always said that and will continue to say so.
I think this talking point may come from polls when they ask ‘on a scale of 1 to 10, how enthused are you about voting, and on the same scale how likely are you to vote etc. I was polled by Gallup a month or so ago, had a million questions like that. At the end of the poll they asked if they could call again to check if my opinions had changed. I said yes, but so far, no call. They may have not liked my Loud 10! in response to all those questions. I expect they might be getting more determination by Repubs because they are motivated, and being stoked, by hate. But that doesn’t mean that Dems who are not screaming from the treetops will not vote. We will need everyone who was so excited about the historic opportunity to make Obama president—-the first thing—–to realize how dire it is that he remains in office.
Yeah, but that’s not that many out of a population the size of Clearwater. I mean, there’s what, 50 people in that town? =)
#HurricaneRomney =)
Ed Rendell? Hmmm…
“Before yesterday, I thought I couldn’t loathe Romney and the GOP any more.”
….you express my feelings.
Morning TOD. Just heard a report the reason Bozo has raised so much money is that his campaign uses business practices, i.e. data mining, to target who would likely spend 2500.00 towards him- a practice based on the “Bain” model of raising capital. The reporter announced this with a level of enthusiasm, not noting at all that this same method is not one of creating jobs, but just raising money. Really? And, do these people not know that this is how PBO has been doing so all along, together with the very effective grassroots efforts? Ridiculous reporting.
Good Saturday Morning TOD!
As we approach the conventions it’s a reminder that this campaign is coming to a critical point. It’s time to put on our game faces and get busy re-electing Obama/Biden and our local Democrats.
Please consider volunteering this weekend. OFA Field offices are opening up in neighborhoods all over the country.
Look up your nearest office, then stop by to get involved helping elect President Obama and local Democrats.

Natalie Portman to Campaign for Obama in Nevada
The Oscar-winning actress will appear at a rally Saturday in Las Vegas.
Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman will hit the campaign trail on President Barack Obama’s behalf Saturday at a major event in Nevada, which has emerged as a crucial swing state.
Portman will join a pair of Obama insiders, political strategist Valerie Jarrett and Democratic activist Cecilia Munoz, for a Las Vegas event designed to get women to vote.
The America-Nevada Women Vote 2012 Summit represents three consistent themes of the Obama re-election campaign that have emerged as the election cycle moves into its crucial final phase. One is enlisting as much A-list celebrity support as possible. (That’s where Portman comes in.)
The second and increasingly important theme is the president’s support for issues such as reproductive rights and support for families that are of particular concern to women. (That’s why all three headliners are women.)
The third is the centrality of Latino voters to the president’s re-election hopes. (Hence Munoz.) Latinos have emerged as a particularly important voting bloc in Nevada, and there is some research that suggests that Latinas outnumber Latinos among Spanish-surnamed voters there.
The event will be held at the historic 5th Street School Auditorium.
“President Obama fights for women every day, and I am proud to stand with him on behalf of women and girls across the country,” Portman said. “The president has proven that he is a strong advocate for women and a defender of the issues that are important to women and their families, from affordable health care to fair pay and quality public education.”

Hiya Fred, GREAT to hear from you. Hope you’re recovering well and looking after yourself. Always thrilled to see you drop in.
Waving to you, Fred:)
Planned Parenthood’s Action Fund planning revenge on Mitt Romney
// Planned Parenthood’s Action Fund plans to spend more than $3 million in Ohio and Virginia against Mitt Romney in the wake of his pledge to “get rid” of the women’s health advocacy group.
The group is one of several liberal-leaning women’s organizations planning to spend millions of dollars in crucial election states to swing undecided female voters toward President Obama. Joining them are NARAL Pro-Choice America and EMILY’s List, two abortion-rights groups who are also planning aggressive campaigns. //

Robney just gave a shout out, to Women Entrepreneurs, like Meg Whitman.
But, if you are a Democrat and own a Business, not you. LOL!
She is the daughter of privilege and worked at Bain…so of course he would….
She isn’t an entrepreneur. She went to eBay from Hasbro.
Too bad HP just posted a $8.9B loss and she failed miserably as a candidate. Two peas in a pod.
And recently announced 27,000 layoffs forthcoming.
She is a real role model for Mitt.
I hope the entire country responds to Romney the way we in California responded to Meg Whitman; i.e. vote against him despite the tons of money he and his billionaire buddies will unleash to defeat President Obama.
Looks like maybe Claire McCaskill really is ahead in MO:
Wimmin!
The Medicare Ad needs to run everywhere 24/7 . Medicare is the most popular and needed Govt. program since Soc. Sec. Everyone needs it. Everyone! And everyone does. Even my rich Republican uncle car dealer uses Medicare.
All 9 people injured in shooting near NY’s Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire
wow!
And now Buddy Roemer, to tell us what an opportunity the Robney speech will be for Immigration reform.
Whatever?
The Liberal media is useless! IMO!
Living in la la land. They think people are stoopid.
isn’t buddy fucking roemer best buddy of chris fucking hayes?
I’m asking the same question every day….the same as Bush but on steroids.

I don’t get it. RT @aejohnsonphd: #nerdland Help me nerdland. Why does everyone believe that #RomneyRyan strength is the economy?? really???
Totally agreeeeee. Heard on NPR similar argument this morning and though I’d choke.
Like the way you split up the post…hope it helps scuttle the rebloggers.
Unfortunately it doesn’t Tien Le, but no worries. Honored to be reblogged by non-scam artists any time!
I still prefer it because it makes the front page easier to navigate.
I still can’t get over the Paul Ryan clip I saw yesterday, when he was trying to emphasize his pro-life bonafides described rape and incest as “methods of conception”. He said he is pro-life, no matter the “methods of conception”. All women should be frightened to death—of this kind of thinking ever becoming close to the presidency. Ryan is radical.
Does anyone honestly believe that 61% of white voters are in line with Willard’s nonsense? Using racism to get votes? When was the last time that worked?
Willard seems to be auditioning for 2012 David Duke.
Hardly, David Duke may have been a racist, but he didn’t flip-flop on his racism.
never underestimate the power of racism/but the struggle for Justice and Equality is more powerful…something that blk folks understand maybe better than some/
and one more point….that gains won must be defended/because they will always be under attack…
I am confident that Mitt Romney will not get 61% of the white vote.
I have confidence HF in the righteous of the struggle for justice and equality…but the arc of justice is not always a straight line…but we must persevere because as Dr King says…NO lie can live forever….
but this lie about the racial inferiority of blk folks continues to persist and constantly needs to be fought against…but as my nana would say…we have to keep on keepin on….
Forward>>>>>>>>>>>>>
He could get 61% of men, but even that is doubtful – but never women – will be a majority of white women for President Obama.
My prediction – mittbot gets about 60-70% white men votes and about 30-40% of white women. Assuming a 50-50 gender split of white votes, he gets about 45 – 55% of white votes.
I agree with your numbers, amk. It is scary to think that 60-70% of white males would support such a racist and morally bankrupt campaign (not to mention vote against their own interests in support of the 1%’s radical agenda). Like I said upthread, PBO’s election combined with the economic downturn has raise white male anxiety to alarming levels.
Tien Le – I don’t believe 61% of whites are in line with Willard. I just don’t. Not when you pull ALL the demographics. 18 and older, seniors, women, men, middle class, by state etc. They would have to show me the details because I just don’t believe it.
Good cartoon, nails Rmoney on the la k of tax returns:

h/t democratic underground
Am I missing something? Voter suppression is a real issue, but I must say I don’t get these “observer” intimidation thing. The woman who says she was intimidated, I take her at her word, but a couple of white dudes watching me cast a vote would be about as intimidating as the wallpaper.
Intimidation can work in some states and communities….it was just 62 years ago that blk folks could not vote…
Hey Prettyfoot, Here’s an interesting take on the TaNahesi Coates article.
http://profblmkelley.tumblr.com/post/30165776271/fear-of-a-misreading-of-history
yes i saw that…i wonder what the President would say to both pieces…
Coates’ article made some good/valid points. He lost me when after aknowledging the “racial atmosphere” in which PBO must operate, he seems to find fault in PBO for having to make concessions to survive in that environment. Like it is somehow PBO’s fault that he is subjected to the racial double standards that have plagued this country since its inception. The fact that PBO will go down in history as one of this country’s best and most effective Presidents, despite the racial roadblocks, is a testament to his political skill.
I think it’s he Prof who’s setting up a straw man. I didn’t get ANY of that from Coates’ article. I certainly didn’t read it s an attack on the President. Not at all.
Oy—-Jonathan Capehart again—–comparing Barack Obama’s keynote convention speech to what is possible from Rubio and Ryan, that they have the same stuff. Sigh again.
I cannot stand him….
Capehart and his stupid, far-fetched comparisons. About a month ago, he was busy comparing Romney’s election strategy to that of former NY Gov Pataki, with the suggestion that Romney could win the presidency in 2012 on the same premise that Pataki won the NY Gubernatorial race in 1994! And that strategy was to be the “unknown” generic candidate against an “unpopular” incumbent.
I told him
1. Romney is not an “unknown”. He is highly disliked even among members of his own party. He has a past record that is known and is negative on most accounts. That was not the case with Pataki.
2. An election for governor does not get the same scrutiny as a candidate for President.
3. The way information about candidates was disseminated in 1994 (when there was on Internet, YouTube, Twitter, FB, blogs, etc) was very conducive to certain candidates remaining under the radar. In 2012, it’s very difficult, if not impossible for a Presidential candidate to simply coast on being “generic”
4. President Obama is NOT “unpopular.” In fact, the opposite is true.
He tried to argue with me by using the usual talking points that there was a lot of “anger” out there at the President. I pushed hard and told him that this was a media-propagated meme and fantasy. And if there was any anger at PBO, then there was even more anger at Romney.
BOOM! America Doesn’t Need a Birther-in-Chief
Isonnnnnnnnnnn…..
how have you been…
I just posted an article for you re: TaNahesi Coates.
I’m good, just getting prepared for the upcoming school year. Will be back on the O trail, soon!
hahaha…i just noticed that…:-)…glad you and your son are well..((huggs))
Twitter assistance needed!
How do I see the push-back directed at Jonathan Alter and his mea culpa. Every time you talk about what’s trending on twitter, I cannot find it.
I have a twitter account, but don’t use it much because I don’t understand it.
You need to type in his account @jonathanalter in the search, click on it and then look down his timeline to see all his tweets and some of responses.
Where is the timeline, something I don’t understand either
The timeline is the right-handed columned headed “Tweets.”
https://twitter.com/jonathanalter
You will see a list of all the tweets he posted over the last several hours and days, if you keep scrolling down. The tweets posted in the last 24 hrs have the number of hrs since posted, and those posted longer have the date on which they were posted.
I am not a twitter user, but if I was, I certainly would appreciate your patience and user friendly directions Hopefruit. Thanks for just being nice.
Also, I forgot to add: The “mea culpa” tweet is the second one in his TL, and if you click on the actual tweet, you will see some responses. Now the “gaffe” tweet which prompted the “mea culpa” tweet is the 6th tweet and you can see some responses by clicking on that tweet.
Thank you so much, I just got on twitter using an iPad which sometimes displays differently than my PC.
Timeline is just the comments that a person and their followers post in their own Twitter account.
On the Home page of Twitter down at the bottom you can always click on Help and there is a FAQ that is very helpful (Frequently Asked Questions). https://support.twitter.com/ Twitter is so easy it’s sometimes hard! I am still learning some of the features myself even though I have been on it for about 6 months.
I wonder about reading the replies, that’s not clear to me either. But if you go to search on Twitter, you can see what is trending.
Social MagnetsDotNet has a great Twitter Tutorial series on Youtube. Here is the first one. Hope this is helpful.
Thanks!

Thank you. Now, let’s try this ….
A+ you passed with flying colors!!!
LOL!!! Thank you :
For some reason, in the previous thread, I was not able to post via my Twitter login. Nice that that issue is resolved!!
#ADollarADayToOFA …. GIVE 62262
Yeah, cuz we MUST have Bobfr tweeting!! That is a TOD law!!
Thank you ison!!!
BTW, everyone, the opulent dinner party video with #BirtherMitt regaling folk of the Chinese slave labor appliances factory now has over 18000 views (had less than 300 when UT posted it late yesterday) and is still attributed to “Rachel Maddow” … so it appears that YouTube has not acquiesced to MSNBC or Ms Maddow if, as they stated, they wanted the video removed.

Good end of the morning and start of the afternoon to all my O peeps! It’s a beautiful getting up day in the TOD neighborhood once again! I’m trying to decide how much, if any of the Pub convention and associated punditry I’m going to watch and listen to. I don’t want to miss any pass the popcorn moments. However, I don’t want to experience any involuntary repulse spasms that may affect my innards.
My political take today is that the Pub visuals are subtle but calculated. This dawned on me after Mitt’s so called gaffe/joke on the birther issue. It was a premeditated hit to excite the base for the convention. That brought me to realize that those people that stand behind him at his speeches are lily white for a reason. It’s the subliminal visual red meat to his base that he has no plans to represent anyone but the folks who look like those standing behind him. It’s the basis for his welfare ads. Mitt is too smart to make unforced errors more than once. We laugh at his cluelessness in underestimating his strength. His strength is being a cold and calculating successful project manager. They can program the outcome without regard to self image or any other humanistic considerations. The thing that saves us is his sense of entitlement and elitism that is turning off everyday folks and the Pub platform that he’s tied to.
aloha cookemom!
you are soooo right–it is a big mistake to underestimate myth’s cold calculation in everything he does and says. he is not in this to make sense, to solve problems, to pave the way to a better future for america. he is in it to win, and that’s all he cares about.
Good Morning TOD
I wanted to thank Eveingeorgia for making suggestions to improve the Election Toolkit.
I have added a the donation pages for all the wonderful folks here,
http://www.whatisworking.com/2012/01/election-toolkit-for-50-states.html#donate
I have included the “GOP Women for Obama” video under the Women category, if more video for Republicans surface I may make a new category. I will add the Don’t Booo – Vote video soon.
Keep those suggestions coming.
You’re the best Linda. Thank you for all that you do.
Great job moving us FORWARD!!!!
Top Haqqani network militant killed in Pakistan.
A key commander in the Pakistan-based militant Haqqani network has been killed in a US drone strike, according to a family member and local sources.
Badruddin Haqqani died last Tuesday in North Waziristan, a relative said.
The death has not been confirmed by US or Pakistani officials.
The Haqqani network has carried out high-profile attacks against foreign troops in Afghanistan. If confirmed, the death would be a major victory for US forces, correspondents say.
In a separate development, Nato air strikes killed a regional commander of the Pakistani Taliban on Friday inside Afghanistan, officials said.
Mullah Dadullah was killed along with a dozen of his fighters in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province. He had taken over as leader of the Taliban in Pakistan’s Bajaur tribal area earlier this year.

Can we turn the political conversation to foreign affairs now, or must we wait until October?
I need your help with a 10 day project
I found 10 videos that feature the Freeport employees that Bain is laying off to outsource their jobs. This is happening right NOW, it is sad that the videos have only 100 – 200 views. I am hoping e can improve that.
Hi WiW, I’m in. Thank you for bring the info here, I can always use researched info to add to tweets. I’ve sent my first tweet in your ‘campaign’ BUT I used one of the other videos only because I didn’t want to start with the crying video. I’ll use in in the next 10 days of course.
Boom goes the hammer:
“I can’t speak to Governor Romney’s motivations,” Obama said. “What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he’s talked about.”
http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/obama-romney-locked-into-extreme-positions-even-if
Obama ad & quote f the day:
Obama Campaign: ‘America Doesn’t Need a Birther-in-Chief’
Obama: Romney Locked Into ‘Extreme Positions’ Even If He Doesn’t Believe Them
Pres. Obama is clearly ready to face Romney in the debates and have Romney look him in the eye and try to repeat his outrageous lies.
President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into “extreme positions” on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life. In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to “own up” to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.
In explaining his accusation of “extreme” positions, the president cited Romney’s call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney’s opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa. The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not “stand in the way” if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women’s control over their reproductive health.
The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.
“It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face,” Obama said.
http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/ap-interview-obama-on-1506155.html
Either he said of himself, or maybe it was that someone once said of PBO, “He will listen to you and he will respect you, but if you take that for weakness, he will crush you.” Well, if that wasn’t said, it should have been.
My President has his boxing gloves on and laced. Mama said knock you out, Willard.
Oh I can’t wait. And I’m glad to see that PBO is ready. There will be no MSM spin that voters can’t easily dismiss or challenge. I know that Lawrence O’Donnell for one, will be scrutinizing the debate moderators very carefully for letting Willard off the hook. Everything will be on YouTube and/or Twitter before Romney and his paid MSM staffers try to push their RNC talking points to convince voters to not believe their lyin’ eyes.
Translation: I will call you on your lies and I will come armed with THE FACTS…Game on!
I agree which is why I could barely get through Fallows’ recent “Slugfest” article about the upcoming debates where he waxed on in excruciating detail about how Romney is a formidable and strong debater, based on Romney’s debate techniques 18 YEARS ago against Ted Kennedy as some sort of “useful guide” for Pres. Obama to use to prepare for October. Oh please! October’s debates are not going to be anything like the Repug primary “debates” where Reversible Mittens could stand at the podium looking Presidential tossing in a few quips while the rest of the Repugs tried to out crazy each other to pander to the base in the audience. I have no doubt that Mittens is going to continue to lie and obfuscate and pander at the October debates just as I have every confidence that our illustrious Prez is going to rip Reversible Mittens to shreds by a thousands cuts; and I can’t wait.
The Republicans descent into madness.

How true, the republicans are a bunch of magical thinkers. I love Bill’s suggestion that instead of the elephant as the R’s symbol, it should be a unicorn.
I have not seen or read anything about the Chuck Todd special last night….
Did anyone watch it ?
ummmm, that would be a no from me. I don’t know that I would have learned anything new or insightful. I imagine the Lock-Up crowd was not happy.
Not me, sorry, I retired early to save up all my energy to watch the three ring circus from Tampa that starts on Monday.
busy cleaning lint out of the dryer….
Hell No I did not watch that B.S. Chuck Todd had on last night. Excuse my english.
I didn’t watch it, but from what I heard, it was another predictable, Romney lovefest. Trying to help him etch-a-sketch all his extremist flip-flopping positions and hit the reset button. Sorry MSNBC & Chuck Todd; nice try but that’s not going to work. FAIL. CNN will be doing another Romney droolfest either today or tomorrow. Not going to work either.
HF…
do u know when the special on the President will be aired?
Monday Sept 3rd. Tweety will host.
thanks!
Nope. Clipped my toenails instead.
nope…i know all i need to know about Romney….
I heard it was the expected puff piece.
This would be laughable if it weren’t so sad.

So as the Farm Bill sits in limbo because of Republican inaction that would offer some relief for these farmers….In batshitcrazy Todd Akin Missouri….the farmers scream how much the govt they have a love/hate relationship with, has failed them..when it actuality it is their REPRESENTATION THAT HAS FAILED THEM!
It’s THIS that makes me insane.
I know…it requires higher level thinking and connecting the dots to our REPRESENTATIVE govt! They refuse to connect the dots….instead laying blame with the “govt” as a whole, when in fact…this is NOT the case. I hear you:)
The young lady in the OFA ad about students looks like Allyson Felix.
OHHHHH!!! PBO is ITCHING FOR A FIGHT
I don’t think willard has a problem lying face to face or otherwise.
He doesn’t have a problem lying, but he does fall apart when challenged.
Dis here.
Exactly!
Temporarily locked out of comment section, BUT, thanks to all who responded to my questions about twitter. Off to read about Jonathan Alter
TOD is da bomb!

I am officially crazy. Been a hard week…this was from Smartypants..not Political Carnival. Maybe I should take a break…
Saw this in a BBC tweet – Man Utd 3-2 Fulham.
This means CC will be smiling more broadly than usual upon her return, I ‘d guess
.
Hope Fulham kicks their ass and has the squirrel on Rooney’s head crying.
YOU HEAR ME CHIPS!!!!
Now, now UTAL, you rabble rouser, you! Let Chips enjoy her victory … until she can’t. Where’s your sportswomanship?
Thank you VC, when United mangle Chelsea next time they meet I will, needless to say, be gentle and gracious towards UT – and will only flash my bottom once.
YW. Eh, Chips, do you think I could be given a heads-up, one of those ‘BREAKING’ cryon, BEFORE the flash? Just so I can move out of the line of
flashfire, you understand? You mean you were too slow again, VC?
3-2 Psshaw! Chelsea came through with a 2-0. Did you SEE that FANTASTIC goal by Torres. Hmmm…….
Even though I despise Man United ( sportsman wise) sad to hear about Rooney. Hope he’ll be ok?
Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Oh really? Look at this goal Torres scored today. THIS is what he will do to those crybabies. Oh I’m sorry…Man United.
Meh, looked like a miskick to me, he was probably trying to pass to Mata.
Meanwhile:
Miskick huh? That miskick will take Man United out when the time comes.
Psshaw! That was such a laaaaame way to get a goal. Persie needs to brush up on how its truly done.
Besides…..who won two of the championships this past season? Hmmmmmm………
Yeah….That would be Chelsea.
Crikey, it’s only (=smallest font) a game!
“Just a game”?!?!?!?!
JUST A GAME?!?!?!
the president is lacing up his boxing boots, ladies and gentlemen. after months of rest and training, he’s about to enter the ring and knock out his opponent in round 1. remember how he had the muhammed ali poster above his desk for years? oh yea, it’s about to go down in a big way, and mittbot will not even know what just happened:

Secretly hoping Man United fails…..FAILS……FAILS.
How about WWII? Adolph Hitler? How about Libya? Qaddafi? How about Egypt? Mubarak?
NASA? JFK? Civil War? Abe Lincoln?
The racists mongers have issues that a Black pres, named Barack Obama did what GW Bush and Cheney tried, but failed. They don’t mind assigning all kinds of blame to pres Obama. Had the raid Gone bad, the same folks would have Blamed pres Obama as they have blamed Carter for the failed rescue attempt.
Hey everyone, is anyone having problems with the comment box today? Eve contacted me to say she’s getting a “grey screen where replies are normally written”. Anyone else??
No….
Okay, thanks DF.
You’re welcome…anyone else have issues?
Not me.
Seems ok to me.
I presume this is meant to read “than”??

The Economist on Romney:
Playing dumb is not an option
Mr Romney may calculate that it is best to keep quiet: the faltering economy will drive voters towards him. It is more likely, however, that his evasiveness will erode his main competitive advantage. A businessman without a credible plan to fix a problem stops being a credible businessman. So does a businessman who tells you one thing at breakfast and the opposite at supper. Indeed, all this underlines the main doubt: nobody knows who this strange man really is. It is half a decade since he ran something. Why won’t he talk about his business career openly? Why has he been so reluctant to disclose his tax returns? How can a leader change tack so often? Where does he really want to take the world’s most powerful country?
It is not too late for Mr Romney to show America’s voters that he is a man who can lead his party rather than be led by it. But he has a lot of questions to answer in Tampa.

Hey, UT, they still haven’t pulled that #BainMitt video and it’s approaching 28,000 views (in less than 24h)
Very interesting.
