Paul Ryan’s dishonesty cheered at Republican National Convention
By: Gregory Spearing
Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s Republican National Convention speech in Tampa on Wednesday showed a flash of passion otherwise missing from the convention.
That’s the good news if you’re hoping for a Romney/Ryan win in November. The bad news happens when fact checking Ryan’s claims. Ryan said this about Medicare: “And the biggest, coldest power play of all in Obamacare came at the expense of the elderly. … So they just took it all away from Medicare. Seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars, funneled out of Medicare by President Obama.”
That’s a whopper. The seven hundred and sixteen billion dollars is the amount saved by paying lower fees to doctors and hospitals as a result of adding newly insured clients through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The spending cuts do not reduce care for patients.
AND cutting subsidies to private insurers who charge you, the taxpayer, about 14% more for Medicare than regular Medicare costs.
What I really don’t understand is why are senior citizens buying this. I am on medicare. My prescription drugs for asthma are now half of what I used to pay. I get free annual check-ups. My premium for my senior supplemental insurance, from United Health Care, went down more than $50 a month this year which means that I will save $600 this year. I understand this saving is a result of the Obama Care which mandates insurers to spend 80/85% of the premiums on patient care. How can seniors buy into the Romney/Ryan BS that President Obama cut their medicare benefits? Am I the only person on medicare who have already realized the benefits of Obama Care?
Does anyone know if the Time articles on our guys is “positive” or more bashing?
[G]iven how stark the choices are, I do think that should I be fortunate enough to have another four years, the American people will have made a decision. And, hopefully, that will impact how Republicans think about these problems.
…I believe that in a second term where Mitch McConnell’s imperative of making me a one-term President is no longer relevant, they recognize what the American people are looking for is for us to get things done.
…[M]y expectation is that there will be some popping of the blister after this election, because it will have been such a stark choice.
I really respect the focus that President Obama brings to each interview, AND TO GOVERNING! Voters who listen to him, really listen, cannot doubt that this president has a) a vision for the country and b) an excellent awareness of the obstacles in his path. I also totally love the way he uses language. [You may not have realized, but I love words. ;) ] At times PBO slaps back so tactfully in his inimitable way, I could hug him and plant a kiss on his cheek!
‘I believe that in a second term where Mitch McConnell’s imperative of making me a one-term President is no longer relevant’….
vcprezofan2, I love words too, which is why I look forward to coming here everyday to read your words as well as so many others…and I never get tired of listing to President Obama.
Hi Puddin’, nice to know you are here joining in on this history making journey PBO’s making.
One article is entitled “Why Change won’t work”. They may be negative
Well, that article is by Michael Grunwald who deconstructed how and why the stimulus passed by Pres. Obama worked very well, so I would say you should read the article first and then see if you were right or if he took a different angle.
Big Press Turnout in Tampa for Romney Economics: Wrong for the Middle Class Press Conference http://t.co/lnJpTOiI— Brad Woodhouse (@woodhouseb) August 30, 2012
Is their a link for this Presser?
Between the press members, his large family, the bussed in supporters, coerced miners and the mainstream hatemongers, Mitt is guaranteed respectable audiences going into November. Good for him.
I think this one is actually a Democratic event, talking about how Mitt’s economic plans are disastrous for the middle class. If I read that right, then it’s fantastic to see so many journalists in attendance. Let’s just hope they actually write something about it!
Truthfully, I was just reacting to the ‘big press tournout’ part which tangled with memories of all the rest I mentioned and not paying attention to the rest. Sometimes I get caught up in my own little world – apologies for the confusion.
We all do it! :)
Politico-MSNBC Hosts jump on Scott-Walker-
Walker is a sack of chewed up grass being processed through a bull.
So you don’t think highly of Walker, eh? I actually got that. ;)
Yardarm, will you marry me? :-)
Of course. :-)
Okay, cool it, you two.
Leave us alone and go to your room. :-)
“Americans like winners, pollsters say. The “who do you THINK will win” question has a strong — but certainly not infallible — track record of signaling where an election is going.
The numbers are startling. Poll after poll shows Obama and Romney roughly even when people are asked the “horse race” question: who do you support for president? But Romney trails Obama badly when the same people are asked: Who do you believe will win?”
This is no call for complacency. But nobody like Mitt and Eddie Munster.
“Chuck Todd on MSNBC talked about how Republicans wanted to refocus on Wisconsin as they see Ohio slip away.
They. See. Ohio. Slipping. Away. I’m not sure how Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes makes up for Ohio’s 18, or Pennsylvania’s 20. Even if Republicans surrender both those states, winning Colorado, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia—states Obama won in 2008—that wouldn’t be enough for Mitt Romney to get to 270.
Fact is, Republicans are losing. Just watch their convention and note the utter lack of energy. Nothing. We all hated Sarah Palin, sure, but she lit that convention hall on fire. George W. Bush knew how to amp it up. Zell Miller had the place rocking. On Tuesday night, Chris Christie had to order people to stand up.”
I think the lack of fire and zeal from Republicans is that even in their zest for hate, they know there are serious problems to be solved, and that the United States is lagging behind in competitiveness and education – given the zeal of the emerging economies to prepare their people (and the fact that there are 6.7 billion people outside the US, and about 3 billion of them live in Asia). They have to recognize that they haven’t heard a single plan or proposal that can meet that challenge. They know in their hearts that the GOP caused the economic collapse. They can see with their own eyes the DOW and the fact that corporations are seeing record-breaking profits (during a recession), and that little of that is actually trickling down to them. They have to know in those quiet moments that things feel better than they did in the Fall of 2008 or the early years of 2009. They may hate the black man, and want him out – but they must know that their party has no ideas. They have no clue how to even run a campaign – let alone compete in this century and expand opportunities for all. and it can’t feel good to be lied to, and treated with disdain. Add to that the fact that they’ve witnessed the treatment of the Puerto Rico and Ron Paul delegations – their own! It can’t feel very good. To top it off – they know President Obama is formidable, and that he’s rubbing his hands with glee in anticipation of getting a hold of Mitt and ripping him into tiny shreds with the truth. Delicious!
That would be his “I love my job and my critics can’t do a thing about it” look. ;-)
I read this last night, excerpts from the book on the OBL raid, from the Navy Seal who took part in the operation.
The book is coming out Sept. 11….
I don’t think I ever felt more disgusted in my life reading this…..the racism, hatred, disrespect towards the President is appalling. How dare he disrespect the CIC like this….I don’t know why the publication is not stopped….
Owen, a 36-year-old SEAL who also took part in a previous 2007 attempt to get Bin Laden and was involved in the heroic 2009 operation to free Captain Richard Phillips from pirates off the coast of Somalia, also had harsh words for President Barack Obama.
Owen says the SEALS joked that Obama would take credit for their success.
Owen writes: “We had seen it before when he took credit for the Captain Phillips rescue.
On the OBL raid, Later, while watching Obama’s speech announcing the raid, Owen writes: “None of us were huge fans of Obama.
After listening to Obama’s speech and enduring Biden’s “lame jokes that no one got (He seemed like a nice guy, but he reminded me of someone’s drunken uncle at Christmas dinner)” the president invited the team to return to his residence later for a beer.
But Owen writes a few weeks later: “We never got the call to have a beer at the White House.” Joking with a fellow SEAL, “Hey, did you ever hear anything about that beer?” Walt cracks: “ You believed that shit. I bet you voted for change too, sucker.”
Christi, did this SEAL take part in the raid that actually got OBL? I’m confused. So he attacks the President in this book? For not having a beer at the White House w/ him?? Good grief people are very petty. And President Obama has always given credit to the SEALS & the military… too bad this joker is so selective with his memory.
Yes he did sherijr
Owen, a 36-year-old SEAL who also took part in a previous 2007 attempt to get Bin Laden and was involved in the heroic 2009 operation to free Captain Richard Phillips from pirates off the coast of Somalia….and the OBL raid.
I’m so disgusting by this……
President Obama always gives credit, always…..
I’m sure if the mission had failed that they would not blame him …….right!
thanks for the info. He’s an ass… and just one more pos making money off attacking President Obama. I wonder how he feels about Bush sending him on the failed 2007 mission to get OBL?? Guessing he excuses that. The President that gave him the oppty to get the most wanted man on the planet AND insure that he, Owen, came back ALIVE- he disrespects in order to make a buck. Shame on him. As an ex-soldier, I find HIM reprehensible.
I with you on that sherijr. Only I’d put it in much stronger terms. I served under 3 Presidents. Did I like them all? No. But it never occurred to me to bad mouth the C-in-C.
Thank you for choosing the right way to serve, Yardarm. That’s something you can still be proud of – unlike these losers who are left with their miserable decisions to serve only themselves.
exactly yardarm, I served under Carter & Reagan.. and I think you can guess how I felt about Reagan.. but I kept my feelings private.
WeRe in the same boat yard.
lol, indeed we are :) its a good place to be ;)
sound like fox news wrote the book so far.
or someone who listens & believes what he hears on Fox news. People like this were anti-Obama before Obama became President… and will seek ways to undermine him.
At the same time, Fox, in its infinite wisdom, gave out this guy’s real name, defrinitely putting his life in danger> I think they were concerned that this would remind people of PBO getting OBL. Of course, now the guy is receiving death threats from al Qaeda people.
And I bet he’s expecting President Obama to protect him and his family from Al Qaeda. And he will.
The question is – what does he think he’s doing to the morale and cohesiveness of the US military? The right wing were so concerned about ending DADT and what it would do to military readiness. What do they think it does to the military when revered members disrespect the chain of command? This is sickening. And if President Obama was ever to call a press conference and announce that he was done, moving on – I wouldn’t blame him for one second. He never will – I know – he cares too much about this country and its people (even these racists who don’t deserve it). But, really, at some point it just has to be too much.
“…….now the guy is receiving death threats from al Qaeda people.”
I’m not sure about this Owen guy. So far from what I’ve seen of his book I find it very dubious and am even doubting he had any role to play whatsoever.
He did. But he is spinning to get paid…..but also he has it in his mind that this will change the course of history by electing a GOPer. But what will be heard would be OBL is dead. That ONLY was possible and indeed factual under CIC, pres Obama. Yes, come next week, watch the press try to help out the TBGOPers. Every show would have them on, unlike the way they have covered the TBGOPers this week. TeaNN started running Mittens last Saturaday and many more times before this Monday and then again, they ran the piece again. But with pres Obama, TeaNN will Only start running the piece they did on the pres 4 days from Now. Certainly, Romney was favored by a wide margin. yet their Mittens is still struggling.
Lying is off the charts with today’s TBGOPers. It will not end well.
I think you’re right about him serving but I think he’s lying and adding a lot of things in the book that never actually happened to make a quick buck.
Yep…..You are right Jeff. The guy is making things up. And he knows it. As Karma would have it, Fox exposed his butt and Al Qaeda, unfortunately now knows his face and stuff.
I dunno if I’ll feel that bad if something happens to him. It seems like he brought it upon himself. Richard Machinco, a navy SEAL writes books on the subject but he never downgrades any of the presidents.
Personally I feel that some of the military dislikes the president because he had don’t ask don’t tell removed which many in the military tend to be some what homophobic to put it mildly.
Yep….you are right again. The crazies are there, just like those just convicted of trying to over throw the gov’t. But they are fewer in number and their hating days…..as thus far, been accepted by the TBGOPers, are dying and they are in their final throes. Yes that makes them more dangerous. However, after Nov 6, they will get stronger for another 6 months and the jig will be over. GOP apparatus would start anew for their political destruction if they don’t change will be harder to ignore.
He better not come to my city to peddle that piece of shit book.
Now, now, down jojothecat…….We are better than their lies and hate;—-}.
What is the name of this book. My husband and I always put hold on these books and check them out for months–no one else will be able to get it and read it from my library. Just a thought.
In abscense of a “like” button, I must add….. :-D
I’m not shock, it was planned. some white people is not ready for a black POTUS. But they can’t change history. Obama save the USA and the world knows it. They always re-wite history when it come to other races, but this time the world knows. If Obama win or lose, this world will never be the same because the world, hear and sees what this family had to put up with. But American is till the best place to live, We just have to keep moving forward. We are going to Win, even if we lose. History says so……… Peace out
Why did she put this on her facebook for everyone to see?
Chelsea Clinton showed up at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday. The former first daughter — who’s a Democrat like her mom and dad — was spotted in Google’s lounge.
“Some of you may be surprised to learn I’m not the first Clinton to attend a Republican National Convention!” she wrote on Facebook earlier today. “My mother attended the RNC in 1968 to support Nelson Rockefeller.”
Has any one thought that Chelsea going was also planned. Why should she not attend? She has press credentials from NBC. She probably went under that. Posting it on her facebook is best, before those who had seen her would attach nefarious connotation to her visit. Not all things look as they appear, I give those with misgivings that. But it could be she was there for her NBC job gave her the opportunity to see how TBGOPers run their show. A thought from the Mid-West.
These statements make no sense. A beer at the whitehouse? Really? The President went to the base to meet and congratulate the seal team. When did the beer come up & why? They are suppose to remain undercover.
This sounds like it’s coming from the same group that put out that ad. Gosh, what is going on here? Why do these guys hate the CIC so much? He has always had their backs. I just don’t get it.
‘Why do these guys hate the CIC so much? He has always had their backs. I just don’t get it.’
Probably because he looks like me? It’s no stretch, as they are all so bold as to say so anymore. What other reason to hate a great CIC such as PBO ? I heard a story once by a respected and noted historian- AA- who once helped an old blind white lady across the street. Once they got to the sidewalk, she thanked him and asked who he was. When she found he was black, she said she wished he had let her cross by herself. Racism is a mental illness that putrifies the heart and knows no cure, except if one wants absolutely to be rescued from it.
I really, really, REALLY hope that Admiral McRaven will do something about this. He was in charge of the SEALS, and he has a great deal of respect for President Obama. He recognizes a man of character when he sees one.
What irks me is that if this raid had been ordered by George Bush, Bush and republicans would have talked about it 24/7. And the SEALS wouldn’t have said A WORD.
I admit being very concerned about how that book could hurt President Obama in the election. It will be a best-seller. How can you counter something like that ???
On a larger note, I’ve been thinking for quite some time now that there are NUMEROUS dark forces aligned against President Obama and that we would see them at work during the 2012 campaign. I’ve been thinking they will try EVERY dirty trick in the book if necessary. That include faux scandals, even false flag domestic terrorism ( I’m talking about something relatively small but yes I’m going there).
President Obama is a threat not only to Wall Street, Big Oil, Big Pharma. Let’s think for a minute about his approach to foreign policy: emphasis on diplomacy and the building of alliances, war as last resort, deadlines for bringing back troops, foreign aid organized not to create profit for corporations but building long-term solutions for poor countries, etc… All of this means President Obama is not the friend of the war profiters, the arm dealers, the big corporations who have profited for years from the flawed foreign programs based on short-term solutions. That means a LOT of very powerful enemies, enemies who work in the shadows.
No wonder President Obama has always said that for bringing change, it will take the coordinated effort of millions of people who get to work and decide to make their voices heard. There is no other way.
I thought so highly of those Navy Seals. I don’t anymore.
To be sure they have a hard job and they train hard and are very well trained. But that doesn’t make them infallible, and I also lost respect.
Heck we trained monkeys to man space flights and dogs and dolphins to check for bombs. So the mystery and respect is gone for me. It’s a job, that is really dangerous and requries a lot of training, but so do a lot of other jobs. That doesn’t mean they’re better people!
And quite frankly, the fact that they were so disrespectful and lacked total professionalism and acted like a bunch of over testosteroned frat boys made me lose total respect for them, and probably by our enemies too!
This putting of people on a pedestal without acknowledging their faults is not a good thing!
This idiot would have been better off to just stay quiet. Now he’s just revealed how stupid and racist those SEALS can be!
I totally agree, pinkbunny. I just hope that him and his cohorts don’t reflect the wider pool of highly trained Navy Seals. These people protect the President!
Patricia Carroll, CNN camerawoman who was assaulted with peanuts says,"People Think We've Gone Further Than We Have."
mije.org/richardprince/…— Edwina (@NJedwina) August 30, 2012
God Bless her but Ms Carroll yes it is political. It is part of the fabric of what has become the Republican Party. Most of them hide their disdain and dare anyone to call them on it but it’s there. We see it in those welfare ads, we see it in there comments about “their America”, we see it in their outright hatred for this President. It’s everywhere in that party. They own it. I’m not saying we don’t have racists on our side but it doesn’t spill over into our political agenda and theirs does.
I guess I need to go for a walk. I’m still stewing from that ugly woman from the previous thread.
She is being disingenuous by creating a false equivalency.
She pissed me off by stating this could happen at Democratic convention.
No wonder CNN get crappy ratings. From top down, they refuse to take a fucking stand.
I’m not surprised at her response. She’s pretty well exposed out there, and she doubtless needs the job. She’s saying basically what her handlers and employers want her to say. In addition, I suspect camerapeople get a great deal of guff from drunks and crazies of all kinds. She feels the need to shrug it off and let folks know they can’t get to her. The difference is that the Democratic party clearly doesn’t condone such behaviour in their policies and platform.
As for the Seal, I’m very disappointed. I pre-ordered it thinking it would simply be a factual account of what happened and to the extent it didn’t compromise security, even a little bit about who did it. That it would be a polemic about Obama is a shock, and I plan to cancel that order and wait for someone with more credibility to tell the story.
Pray for my mom. She’s 91 and getting a pacemaker today.
LInk to interview:
I do pray that everything goes smoothly with your Mom’s surgery today and with her adjustment to the pacemaker. Bless you both.
God bless your mom, Carol! I’ll send up a prayer for her – and you.
Thank you both for your prayers. No news so far, so things may be going smoothly. She’s bound to be in recovery for at least a day or so-no need to rush her home. I got good news myself-my cholesterol is good, and i don’t need to take as much aspirin as I usually to.
That is good new, Carol! I will pray for your mother too.
She was probably TOLD to say that if she ever is asked to respond to what happens. WHEN has anything like this has happened at a Democratic Convention? My mom who is 78yrs old and watches all the RNC Conventions said she remembers in 1968 they set an AA GOP Delegate on fire. Every year t
JoJo, I’m sure not since I was politically aware (1968). Once the Dixiecrats left and were replaced by McGovernites-the diverse crowd we have now-black people have literally seeded the party. You see black faces not only on the podium, but also in those back-stage positions such as platform, delegate selection and so forth. What ever happened to that GOP delegate that was set on fire? I bet his kids are now all hard-core Democrats. I’d never vote for a party that allowed or condoned that sort of thing to my dad.
Did you read Joe Klein’s article?
God love me, but I think the political establishment of the Republicans and the mainstream press got stuck in 1980 and have never gotten past it. Even the convention looks like the whitebread world I remember as a younger house cleaner.
Could someone please tweet chuck todd that quantity does not equal quality. Democrats have the first Afirican American President and first Latina on the supreme court.

With Ryan Speech, Romney Campaign Goes Full Tea Party
Ryan was selling libertarian articles of faith: Downsize the government and the welfare state, and all will be well; the economic downturn had nothing to do with corporate shenanigans or deregulation; and if the Medicare guarantee is dumped, the elderly will fare better in the free flowing corporate marketplace. Trust in this theology, he was saying, and the nation will revive—and he was not just speaking for himself. This was now the official sales pitch of the Romney-Ryan ticket.
Hours before Ryan’s speech, I asked a former George W. Bush administration official about the Ryan pick. He admitted to being baffled, even after talking to Romney aides about the choice. “They’re in a mania. They think America is ready for a grand reconfiguration of its social insurance system. It’s like they’re in the middle of their own housing bubble, and they’re talking only to themselves.”
Steele is just stupid.
Okay, everybody, sit down. Because there is one Republican that tells the truth. Lindsay Graham said: “We’re not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”

I bet the SEAL got a fat cheque from some rich Republican to do what he did. And I’ve heard that the ‘secret guest’ is going to be Clint Eastwood. I love Clint – from his early days in the Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns to many of the fine films he acted in and directed. He’s cool – nothing phony about him – or so I thought. If he does speak at the convention he will kill his brand overnight. I will never see another film he has any involvement with and I doubt many others who have supported his work would either. My prediction/speculation is that he may have struck a deal to have future projects funded by some rich Bain/Koch/addelson republicans. If it’s true then he’s a dirty sell out and a creep. I know that he’s a republican but this is a different republican party and he just got into bed with the biggest assholes going.
An old friend grew up in famous family who, although they were very liberal people themselves, knew him quite well so she spent a fair amount of time around him and she can’t stand his politics. He’s very, very conservative. So I’m not surprised that he would underwrite the RWNJs and all their BS. I’ve seen some of his movies but now I can’t stand the sight of him.
I saw him years ago.. at a pro-am ski trip. It was at the peak of his career during the spaghetti westerns…. He fell down the entire slope.. sometimes Karma comes in many ways. ;)
Clint: The man with no shame .
He has always been a creep. and a wife beater
“…. according to a new book dissecting the myth of Clint Eastwood, he’s also a violent, mean-spirited, tight-fisted serial philanderer who beat his first wife, conducted a string of affairs throughout his career, fathered several children outside of wedlock, forced two of his lovers, including long-time partner Sondra Locke, to have abortions and, when it suited his needs (which was often), discarded women like used tissues.”
Yep… I remember the Sondra Locke incident…I think it came out when she sued him for “palimony “
Never knew that Linda. I hope the publishers have good lawyers, it’ll be pretty hard for him not to go after them, that would be like admitting it’s all true.
That happened a long time ago…..
I think she lost in court….
This article is from 1999. It’s not a new book, though still quite galling.
 Remind me to check dates on articles in future.
Champions League holders Chelsea begin their defence in a tough group with Juventus, while Celtic have been drawn with Barcelona in Group G.
Manchester United face Galatasaray, Braga and FC Cluj while Arsenal have Schalke, Olympiakos and Montpellier.
Chelsea, who (VERY LUCKILY) beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the final last season, also come up against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk (A LONG TRIP – EXCELLENT) and Denmark’s FC Nordsjaelland (HUH?)
Chelsea and Juventus will advance. Go Blues!!
(And it wasn’t luck. It was strategery. Which Man U could’ve used before flaming out in the group stage last season. ;-)
D’you want to step outside, Mister?
We’ll let out boys do the talking on the pitch!
God, I love football.
I used to love football – until the last day of last season.
Wow! I’ve read other books by the writer – he’s good and respectable (from memory) so he may be okay/safe from litigation. Gee what a creep Clint turned out to be – I had head a story (from a person supposedly in the know) about how he set out to ruin Sandra Locke’s career (mainly cause she didn’t shut up and fought for her rights) but I wasn’t sure if it was just gossip. Sad to discover that Clint’s a super creep and shilling for Romney on the same day! Obviously being cheap with money is something they share in common.
Ah, another Republican poster child for family values.
He’s got a new movie coming out, too.
I disagree with President Obama for the first time ever…. I do not agree that the repubs will be less obstructive WHEN he wins his second term. Those repubs that are still in office, I believe, will double down on the lies, obstruction… which is why we must give him a stong dem Congress, imo. I fully expect thats whats left of the crazies to become even more insane w/ a POTUS win.
When I read that Sheri I thought to myself that I guess as President he must have to say that because he can’t really believe after the way they have treated him that anything would change in his second term?
you’re right… and he wouldn’t say it anyway- he’s smart & savvy and never seems to hold a grudge- as he really does have our best interests at heart- he knows he’ll have to work w/ them- whoever them is – in Congress.. on our behalf.. and is even possibly giving them the benefit of the doubt in hopes they may actually live up to their jobs- working for allllll the people of this country.
He also is giving electorate confidence that the Republicans will be forced to work with him.
Yup – don’t forget that the likes of Ezra Klein were encouraging people to vote Republican not too long ago, because he felt it would end the obstructionism. That’s a dangerous theory to have out there. People need to understand that even if there was no obstruction with a GOP win (because Dems seem to like to go along), the bills that would be flying out of Congress would be disastrous to this country! Romney and his cohorts have said they don’t need permission to go to war. They’ve committed to killing the middle class. They’ve declared their disdain for human people and then designated corporations and zygotes as people. They get all their legislation from lobbyists and Grover Norquist and the religious right. They’ve shown they have no consciences, and don’t care what lessons they’re teaching their kids. And they’re just mean (see how the Wisconsin assembly treated the Democrats, or the other incident with the guy in the wheelchair who had money thrown at him, or even Paul Ryan joking as an elderly man was tackled by security.
I think that he’ll find ways to circumnavigate congress of course I am hoping that president Obama gets a majority in congress but I just don’t know at this point. Still trying to stay optimistic.
me too Jeff ~ me too.
We need a net of 25 new Dems in the House. It can be done. It MUST be done!
I believe they will double down also, because theywill want to start prepartion for 2016, and they will not want to give the Dems a good record to run on.
thats a real good point COS. Not only that, but they’re a spiteful hateful bunch- and a second Obama win will really bring out the meaness. They will learn nothing from his win, I believe- along the lines of…. oh hey the American people really DO not like us, or want us in charge of anything …
On a purely political note, if PBO said that GOP obstruction will continue during his second term, it would scare off Independent voters who would vote for Mitt in effort to end gridlock in Washington. That would be playing into the GOP’s hands (this is the reason they obstruct). Hopefully PBO will win by a landslide with long coattails, allowing the Dems to retake the House and hold onto the Senate majortiy. Such a victory would send a message to surviving non-teabagger GOP senators (which we will need to reach 60 votes).
I hope thats exactly what happens… a big win with long coattails… wouldn’t that be awesome :) :)
I don’t think he really believe that, and if he is, then he sadly very naive.
bwd our President is the furthest thing from naive… I think its been well explained it by folks why he wouldn’t say it. Hang in there, he knows what he’s doing and we + he, will prevail.
Newbie to responding…but did anyone see Jan Brewer endorsing POTUS – http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/jan-brewer-endorses-obama-arizona-130246129–election.html
Freudian slip…She knows PBO is the better man to run this country but she is too evil to admit it so it just slipped out.
Welcome aboard newbie! Post always!
I see on twitter that people are mad at Chuck Todd—-duh—–about something negative he said about the First Lady. I can’t find what he said. Anyone know? Also see that people were incredulous at another thing he said which was he bet the Dems wished they had as much “diversity” as Repubs have on display. Everyone went—-huh???? I guess he meant as speakers at their convention, but that also doesn’t make sense either as I recall Dems have quite a diverse lineup scheduled. Todd—-not that bright.
It is called, drinking the TBGOPer bat poop. Sitting next to Joe Scarborough, David Gregory, Tom Brokaw, etc……Is there any wonder?
I've got his back! Please retweet if you do to. http://t.co/ppoQ7SN6— Donna NoShock (@NoShock) August 30, 2012
Love that Donna.
WASHINGTON — A federal court has ruled against a Texas law that would require voters to present photo IDs to election officials before being allowed to cast ballots in November.
A three-judge panel in Washington ruled Thursday that the law imposes “strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor” and noted that racial minorities in Texas are more likely to live in poverty.
The decision involves an increasingly contentious political issue: a push, largely by Republican-controlled legislatures and governor’s offices, to impose strict identification requirements on voters.
The ruling comes in the same week that South Carolina’s strict photo ID law is on trial in front of another three-judge panel in the same federal courthouse. A court ruling in the South Carolina case is expected in time for the November election.
Didn’t they just get whacked a couple days ago over the Re-Districting Shenagins ?
Yep! This is good. We had a good ruling the other day in Florida as well with voter registration.
Lots of lost ground to make up though. Lost valuable time. Way behind on voter registrations.
Here’s a quote from the opinion:
In reaching this conclusion, we emphasize the narrowness of this opinion. Specifically,
we have decided nothing more than that, in this particular litigation and on this particular record, Texas has failed to demonstrate that its particular voter ID law lacks retrogressive effect. Nothing in this opinion remotely suggests that section 5 bars all covered jurisdictions from implementing photo ID laws. To the contrary, under our reasoning today, such laws might well be precleared if they ensure (1) that all prospective voters can easily obtain free photo ID, and (2) that any underlying documents required to obtain that ID are truly free of charge.
Yes, the Court makes clear that it’s a narrow opinion that does not preclude voter ID laws in general (watch the Repubs cut that off mid-sentence). BUT “that all prospective voters can easily obtain a FREE photo ID; and (2) that any underlying documents required to obtain that ID are truly free of charge.”
This is extremely important.
Three cheers for the ACA, known affectionately by us as Obamacare! I got my bill today for my mammogram: Due from me $0.00!!!
People are certainly stupid if they want this repealed!!! Encourage all the women you know to get their mammogram so they can see the results, both for their health, then for their pocketbook. It would be $273 if I had to pay for it, or there would be a copay…….
I had my mammogram and a bone density test last week and I kept waiting for the lady to ask me for my co-pay. I did not have to pay one penny. I immediately thought of PBO and how he is looking out for us.
That’s great COS. How are you doing?
My mammo was fine but I am going to have to take more calcium and vitamin d for my bones. Thanks for asking Chips.
Thrilled to hear about the mammo COS, the relief must be enormous. Pack yourself with calcium and vitamin D! And look after yourself.
Same thing happened to me with the ACA. I hadn’t had a mammo since 2010 because of the copay, so I got one, they found something, gave my a biopsy, found it was normal, but I got rid of some calcifications that were making me uncomfortable on that side. I also got a free pap smear as well. In addition, I’m seeing more of my prescriptions be affordable. God bless Obamacare.
$0 bill for the test and hopefully, a clean bill of health. :-)
Yes, for me, a clean bill of health,,,,,hopefully COS got one too. With this available, more women will be having the exams they need, and cancer if any, will be caught sooner…..Why do people hate this?????
Because they’ve been trained to hate it.
Six Things Paul Ryan Didn’t Mention In His Convention Speech (A MUST READ)
By Jason Sattler
Paul Ryan – who began his career in politics as a speechwriter for Congressman Jack Kemp – proudly penned his own convention speech. Taking on this responsibility saved him from having to discuss the touchy subjects he probably isn’t comfortable mentioning.
But since Ryan is the ideological leader of the party who practically forced Mitt Romney to accept all of his ideas before he was even selected to be on the ticket, it’s important that we get to the heart of who he really is.
No one expects Paul Ryan to be the only Republican to mention Osama bin Laden at the convention. But here are six things Paul Ryan won’t tell you because he they don’t quite fit with the image he’s trying to project.
Paul Ryan’s breathtakingly dishonest speech
By James Downie
Yesterday, at an ABC News panel, Mitt Romney pollster Neil Newhouse said, “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.” Wednesday’s speech from Paul Ryan certainly took that disdain for truth to heart, as his address was filled with falsehoods from start to finish.
Great idea GOP! Republicans have strengthened the pro-gun rights portion of their party platform, including a new call for unlimited bullet capacities in guns, in a defiant response to criticism that followed the mass shootings at the Co. movie theatre and at Gabby Giffords gathering in Arizona.
It seems to me that Repubs don’t love America, as they are constantly professing. It looks like they must hate this country, that they are out to destroy it in every possible way.
#lyinRyan is trending please tweet
I LOVE it that his name rhymes with “lyin'”
Ryan V.P. Acceptance Speech Lacking in Substance, Loaded With Rhetoric And Falsehoods
By Jack Watkins
Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan took the stage in Tampa last night and delivered a well-crafted, and forcefully delivered speech, accepting the Republican Nomination for Vice President. Ryan, 42, is a six-term Congressman with no executive experience and having authored only two pieces of legislation (one naming a post office) thrust himself into the electoral spotlight before a wildly enthusiastic convention crowd. He proceeded to launch into a lengthy critique of the Obama Presidency that was laden with distortions and more than a few outright lies. Among them:
The lies Ryan told last night should headline every single newspaper today.
On an earlier thread folks asked for a page which links the stories about Lyan Ryan that could be tweeted, shared on facebook or emailed.
I made one – thanks to the person who posted the list, it made it super easy to just copy, paste and link
Brilliant work Linda, thank you!
Apparently MHP lost her home in the storm. Unfortunate, but family members weren’t inside.
Yes, very sad. The is the house she and her husband had hoped to renovate and use as a springboard to help revitalize the surrounding neighborhood, which was devastated by Katrina. I’m something of a renovation-junkie (not doing them, just observing them). I was really looking forward to seeing the completed restoration. Even with this setback, tremendous as it is, I hope they can continue working to fulfill their vision.
Feeling sad. #Isaac took the home @JamesHPerry and I just bought. All safe. House was vacant except for my dreams. http://t.co/h62AkGPB— Melissa Harris-Perry (@MHarrisPerry) August 29, 2012
Wow, that looks like it could’ve been a gorgeous house once it was renovated.
Mitt’s unshakeable record – OFA ad
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Romneyworld
My new outlook thus emboldened, I went out into the world. At lunch at a great Greek diner in downtown Tampa, I ordered the artichoke and feta omelette and a coffee. When the tab came, I took a pencil from my backpack and gently erased the omelette charge, taking care not to tear the pale-green receipt. I then paid only for the coffee. Challenged by the waitress, I said I didn’t know what she was talking about; after all, there was no mention of it on the receipt and no more omelette on my plate, was there? And the fundamental principle of my having come to the diner had been to get my system recharged, and it was, really, the multiple cups of coffee that had done that. She didn’t seem to understand, and went off to get the manager, but I didn’t have time for that and walked back out onto the street. The world’s moving fast, we’ve got tweets to write and Instagram photos of convention hall balloons to post, and you sure as heck aren’t going to qualify as a maker in a makers-and-takers world if you’re quibbling over a piddling erasure. Memory is for moochers, and hangups about words are for print journalists, and just look at what’s happened to them.
Oh yes, .@stefcutter went there! The word that's finally being spoken. | Obama Campaign On Ryan RNC Speech: 'He Lied' livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/obama-ca…— Liberal Librarian (@Lib_Librarian) August 30, 2012
did she say, ‘lyinsonsabiscuiteaters’?
LL you beat me to it. You truly Rock!!!!! Yahoo, Celebration…..Come on, lets celebrate.
Finally! It’s way past time. Democrats must call a spade a spade! Santorum and Romney lied to the American people in their face.
Libertarian presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, allowed on Iowa’s November ballot. Not sure of the effect of that decision, but most people right now expect him to pull votes from Willard, whether that’s a significant amount or not, I do not know.
Chipstick rachel had a chart that showed all the bills ryan voted on with the amount do anyone know where to get that chart. It was telling and need to go viral
Thanks Redbird, will look for the video.
.@chucktodd #LyinRyan & #BainMitt: A lethal John Birch Party concoction of bully bigotry, unbounded dishonesty, avarice and misogyny.— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) August 30, 2012
OMG, On Mediaite, there is an article about Chuck Toad saying that the Democrats wish that we had the diversity and the deep bench that the Repubes have! UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Here you go Jay, simply unbelievable:
I hate and loath this idiot.
When I saw this I wanted to start cussing!
He was whinning on twitter because he said people were being mean to him. He said it was “faux outrage”. Can you believe this crap?
He must be colour-blind!
This is for our TOD Tweet-Master, Bobfr …. Happy Belated Birthday, Bob! We love you!!!
That is a really kind greeting, Dudette. Thank you so much!!
If you look at each of Ryan’s deceptions last night, they all target specific weaknesses in Ryan or Romney’s record.
MEDIA MATTERS FACT CHECKS PAUL RYAN CONVENTION SPEECH
Fox cheered Congressman Paul Ryan following his speech at the Republican National Convention, calling it “cogent,” “coherent,” and a “lethal shot” against President Obama. However, the speech was laden with numerous falsehoods that Fox patently ignored.
A fact checker on fox news slams Ryan’s speech:
MSNBC isn’t the only one trying to play both sides apparently.
Whew! A bit late, but I’m finally here among my O peeps, on this glorious, great getting up day at the TOD block party! Fully energized about the road ahead for us. #2 in safe and sound and on her way to the OFA headquarters in Chicago to do some volunteer work. As she was leaving, she got a call from OFA to become a field manager for the remaining of the election cycle. It’s all hands on deck for everyone.
My political take today is the crowd at the circus last night were hyped up as to be expected. That is, after all, the intent of such a parade of the elephants. The MSM are in total bliss for having something new to gnaw on. They’ve gone back and forth between calling out the lies and perpetuating them. What a tangled web, oh my. I also notice that the Pubs are full on with the Rove tactic of accusing your opponent of what you’re doing (lies). They are also using the tactic of hitting the opponents strength and making it a weakness (leading from behind). Since we know all this, we mustn’t let it get us down. Follow PBO’s lead….never too high, never too low….no drama…..just move FORWARD!!!
FACTS MATTER: The Ultimate Guide To Mitt Romney’s Convention Speech
Politicians from both parties twist facts or spin policy, but Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign has had a particularly strained relationship with the truth, repeating false claims with impunity — even after fact checkers, mainstream media organizations, and blogs have all debunked their assertions.
From claiming that “Obama gutted the welfare work requirement” to insisting that his own policies won’t deregulate Wall Street, Romney has led a post-truth campaign. A top adviser even admitted earlier this week, “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.”
ThinkProgress has compiled a Viewer’s Guide comparing what Romney says with the facts:
Romney On His Tax Plan || Romney On Wall Street || Romney On The Budget
Romney On Bain Capital || Romney On Obamacare || Romney On Medicare
Romney On Women’s Health || Romney On Energy || Romney On Global Warming
Romney On The Auto Bailout || Romney On Welfare Reform || Romney On Food Stamps
Romney On Security || Romney On LGBT rights
A MUST READ, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ESPECIALLY FOR THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA.
This is fantastic! Handy tool – I’m definitely going to share. Thank you!
Aggh! I posted the slow version of Bob’s birthday song… not the one I meant to – the faster, bouncier joint.
Not much visual in this one — just good music. Forgive the 2nd diversion! It’s all about love. :-)
Happy Birthday Bob!
WOW!!! Two versions, both lovely. Thank you Dudette!!!
Well done Dudette! Our fearless fighter, Bobfr, deserves the fabulous birthday gift you gave him.
Paul Ryan’s speech: a round-up of his most audacious untruths
By Tom McCathry
In his barnstormer of a speech to the swooning crowd at the Republican national convention on Wednesday night, Paul Ryan laid a mound of misdeeds at President Obama’s door. To sustained applause from the floor, the vice-presidential candidate accused Obama of raiding Medicare, lying to auto workers and turning his back on the poor. But the speech (transcript here) was not always at pains to adhere to the historical record. At times, we are disappointed to report, Ryan baldly lied. Here’s a round-up of Ryan’s most audacious untruths:
At least it appears that a lot of the media and opinion writers are calling attention to Ryan’s lies. The folks who will be voting for he and Robney were in that convention center cheering him on. They could care less as to what he was saying. If I were an independent, he would not have impressed me last night. They need to win over other ethnic groups, and nothing he said indicated that would happen from his speech.
I only listened to Rush for 3 seconds today, just long enough to hear him say “Janesville” and then I really didn’t want to hear it.
We actually went on the tour of the Janesville GM plant a couple of times, once in 2004 and the other time maybe 2005/2006. They made Denalis and some other huge SUV’s – they got about 12 mpg or something. And during our tour, they pointed out even then how half the plant was empty and not used. And I think they were going to lose one of those models at the end of whatever year we were there. They told us that.
So it’s not like they closed down a huge, thriving, useful plant. The gas guzzlers they produced combined with higher gas prices did that – and they saw it coming for many years before 2008.
Republicans are afraid of change. You can’t have people like that running a country, especially in these changing times when the world order is shifting and everyone is looking East (Asia) and South (America) to new markets, cultures and opportunities. To be afraid of even calculated risk at this time is to doom the country to the bottom of the heap. They don’t want to move from fossil fuels. They don’t even want to try and explore a world where coal might even be cleaned – when China is using coal like water, and the world is getting more polluted as a result (it could be an impossible dream to clean coal, but if anyone can do it – the US should be leading the charge)! They refer to the USSR and label it the “greatest foe”. They’re stuck looking at Israel as it was 50 years ago, and refuse to acknowledge areas for improvement in order to establish better relationships with its neighbours and a more stable future for Israel’s children. They are stuck in the “family values” of the 50’s and abhor science and progress. These are not the people to lead the country – let alone the world. If they get into power, Condoleeza was right – the world will look to another leader to fill the vacuum. We all know what happened the last time the GOP were in power, and while some Americans might be willing to return to those days, the rest of the world will not.
The keynote in Charlotte
The entire Republican convention was built around the lie that Obama asserted that business owners didn’t build their own businesses.
Maybe the Democrats should double down and focus their convention on Obama’s actual message in that maladroit riff.
Elizabeth Warren, who created the prototype “you didn’t build it alone” speechlet, sent an email to supporters late last night that could be the keynote in Charlotte. Subject line: We built it together:
Simon Rosenberg @SimonWDC
Nothing is holding GOP back more than their incorrect insistence that econ is worse/the world is less safe then when O took office.
Jay Carney…..aka….Kent, was just so calm today while the WH pressers were using every lying, stinking talking points since Tuesday…..peppering with loaded questions. I was happy how he dealt with every bat poop. I just finished watching that on C-SPA.org.
So those who are a little down…..Don’t, please.
Do you remember the Navy sailor from Iowa who lost all his limbs in Afghanistan in May and was visited at Walter Reed by PBO:
He’s coming home to Cedar Falls, IA this afternoon for a visit and they’re covering it live, as a “hometown hero” at http://www.kwwl.com/
Kind of makes all my complaints seem very minor…
Stephanie Cutter called the TBGOPers Ryan crap…..Lied. They called them a Bold face Liar. Go, Ms. Cutter Go.
New post everyone:
The sheer magnitude of GOP and Romney lies forces media to react
As Steve Benen and James Fallows keep arguing, this poses a test for the news media. What would happen if a nontrivial number of articles and broadcasts about the welfare lie and other Romney falsehoods called out his dishonesty right in their headlines, prominently featuring unequivocal declarations (not mealy-mouthed he-said-she-said nonsense) that Romney is misleading people and has done so again and again and again, despite knowing the truth?
Mark Kleiman suggests that horserace reporters begin clearly spelling out that Romney has “made a strategic decision to try to bury Obama under a blanket of false charges.” Would that be an exaggeration? No, it wouldn’t. What if newspapers devoted extensive front page pieces to dissecting Romney’s decision to continue basing entire ad campaigns on widely debunked claims, even as Romney advisers openly boast about the success of their dishonest ads and openly declare that they won’t be constrained by fact-checking?
Sooner or later, the media will wake up to the fact (horror) that this man, Romney, could actually become President.
Listen to this? In the Time interview, the President said he needs to Communicate better. I agree.
But, the Robney Camp sarcastically said that in his second term the President will be the story teller in chief.
All they do us make fun of Him.
U remember doing this on the 8th Grade, but a Campaign full of lies and distortions, calling People names, this is like some Teenage Sitcom!
Finally a TIME cover story of the President! I was getting tired of all the Mitt coverage. Come on, they have to give equal time. And Newsweek? I’m so done with them. I hate their inflammatory covers. So far, Time is doing fine by me….I hope they continue to keep it fair and balanced and I better see wall to wall coverage of the Dem Convention the same as they have been doing for the Repub Convention.
