Gail Collins (NYT): Only the Good Get Rich …. The convention was so full of opportunities to catch a glimpse of celebrities like John Sununu and Rudy Giuliani that I didn’t get around to the platform until the flight back from Tampa. But it was so worth the wait. Really, I could hardly take my eyes away from it long enough to watch the flight attendant demonstrate how to use a seat buckle.

As you’d expect, there were paeans to things Republicans like (phonics, Israel, coal, English, defense spending, transparency for everything except political donations) and denunciations of the stuff they hate (Obamacare, mass transit, the Law of the Sea Treaty, Venezuela, teachers’ unions, Obamacare). But you may be interested to know that the proven methods of improving school performance are high standards, accountability and “renewed focus on the Constitution and the writings of the Founding Fathers.”

Some of the recommendations are stunning. Besides the inevitable tribute to the Second Amendment, the platform goes to the trouble of specifically mentioning that Republicans are against limiting the sale of those extra-bullet magazines for guns that maximized the victim count in the mass shootings in Tucson, Colorado and Wisconsin.

Please, keep that in mind. Wherever there’s a gun capable of spraying 100 bullets, there’s a Republican platform behind it.

Tim Dickinson (Rolling Stone): Mitt Romney is lying again.

On the eve of his speech at the Republican convention, Romney and his campaign have launched a new site touting Mitt’s private-sector experience: SterlingBusinessCareer.com.

Under a section called “Fixing Businesses,” the campaign lays out the legend of Romney’s 1990 return to the consulting firm Bain & Company, describing his turnaround effort there as an “incredible success” that returned the firm to profitability “in just a year.”

That is a lie.

Federal records obtained by Rolling Stone through a Freedom of Information Act request reveal that Bain & Company lost money in both 1991 and 1992 — with Romney at the helm.

After the garbage dump of the RNC the week sure is ending on a great note. Only a few deaths in NOLA and MS despite a lot of flooding in areas where it wasn’t anticipated. Do we realize how much this president does that he never gets credit for? What a contrast to see the Coast Guard and reservists out there immediately rescuing these folks rather than celebrating a birthday on the tarmac that we witnessed with the previous president. I loved his speech at Fort Bliss today, had me in tears. He and Michelle never stop fighting for our troops while idiot Romney can’t be bothered to thank our troops in his 45 min speech last night, but he would be the first to send them into harm’s way. And how about his comment in LA today about where did the water come from? I shudder to think of this man on the world stage and the harm he would do to America’s image. As usual, PBO is out again tomorrow fighting for his reelection while the Robot heads home to rest up after his strenuous week. Can’t wait for the contrast with our convention next week. And finally, the lies of this last week are going to come home to roost for RR. Between the doc dump last week with Gawker and the new Rolling Stone piece, along with the workers from the Janesville plant, lots of info for the campaign to work with in the coming weeks. Forward!

now i do know it’s friday night, and it’s labor day weekend…but here’s an interesting read about myth’s tax plan:

‘ But there is one way that Romney’s plan works mathematically: Income inequality explodes. If enough growth goes to the top 5% of earners, they will get rich enough to fill the revenue hole. How much richer would they have to get? ‘

‘ The upshot is this: Romney’s tax plan does not work under remotely plausible growth projections. It either increases middle class taxes or increases the deficit. If Romney is serious about doing neither, then he has to be unserious about his growth projections. The rich have to get almost impossibly rich to make up for the lost revenue in Romney’s tax plan. Realistically, their incomes would need to be 7.7 to 11.3 percent higher than TPC predicts — that is, we should not ignore the corporate income tax cuts. To put that in perspective, that’s between $377 and $548 billion additional dollars flowing to the top 5 percent of households. ‘

For anyone who has ever sung the National Anthem solo, it really is NOT an easy song to sing. The vocal range and breath control needed to belt it out is really quite challenging. Marc Anthony did a classic, magnificent job. Whitney Houston’s version blew me away.

i always put whitney’s right up there with Marvin Gaye’s rendition in 1983:

i’ve listened to marvin’s version so many times (it’s on a greatest hits album of his) that it seems like the correct way to sing it to me, and everyone else is doing unusual versions!!! i was surprised tonight reading a little bit about whitney’s version, that some people involved say that whitney recorded that a few days earlier since the timing had to be so precise for the jets at the end. i keep watching it closely and it looks like it’s her actual singing that night, but either way, it’s her without studio tricks and she always performed at that caliber, so it’s not surprising she did it so well. that whole performance and staging that night was spectacular and so memorable!

      • September 1, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Never heard this version of marvin Gaye before. I remember the one he did before a prize fight and was deeply criticized for it. To me it was heavenly. Love this version as well and Whitney will always be tops. Sometimes the songs are prerecorded because of the feedback which echos around the stadium. In any case it was her voice.

so, as you might have guessed, lyin’ ryan doesn’t just make stuff up when he’s talking politics and economics. so….what did you say your marathon time was again?

‘ Last week, in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, Paul Ryan said that he had run a marathon in under three hours, or, more precisely, “I had a two hour and fifty-something.” That is quite speedy, and running fans in the forums of Letsrun.com treated the claim with great skepticism. ‘

‘ Slate and Runner’s World investigated. Questions were raised, given the criticism of Ryan’s honesty in his convention speech. This evening, the terrific running journalist Scott Douglas figured out that Ryan had actually run a 4:01 in the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1990, when he was a college student. ‘

so…is there anything at all you can tell us that is actually true, mr ryan, candidate for vice president of the united states of america?

Hey everyone… found this here: http://www.thepragmaticpundit.com/

World War II Veteran Ralph Maxwell says 4 More Years!

    WHEREFORE ART THOU, MITT ROMNEY?
    by Ralph Maxwell

    O, Romney-O, Romney-O,
    Wherefore art thou, Mitt Romney?
You flip-flop here, you flip-flop there,
    You flip-flop almost ev’rywhere.

You ballyhoo what you’re gonna do
    And then you pull a switcheroo;
    You now malign what you once found fine;
Seems like you’ve got a jellyfish spine.

    Obamacare, by you begun,
Now you’d trash it on day one.
    Gun control you did extol,
    But now you’re preaching decontrol.

    O, Romney-O, Romney-O,
    Wherefore art thou, Mitt Romney?
We’ve got no clue what you will do
Or what new view you’ll pander to.

There are several more verses, so take a look. And watch the video as well. Love, love, love it. 94 years old… My respects, Mr. Maxwell!!

Chips, dear, do you think this deserves front page status?

Team Obama promises it will fill every one of the seats in Charlotte’s mammoth football stadium Thursday night when President Obama closes the Democratic National Convention with a speech accepting his party’s nomination.

For weeks, Democrats have been concerned about filling Bank of America Stadium, home to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers. They feared a devastating image of an enthusiasm gap if Obama spoke to empty upper decks at the venue.

Those Seats have been sold out. More Beltway/RNC gossip.

I see the La. Excorcist Gov. Jindal has known for days of PBO’s plans to be there on Mon. So he scrambled with the Romney campaign to get Willard there before Mon. —–for a nice photo-op— and so Willard could ask “Where did all this water come from?”, or whatever similar dumb thing he asked.

    http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/paul-ryan-represents-the-conservative-wing-of-a-conservative-party-a-853015.html

behind Ryan’s puppy-like face is the determination of a crusader. His soft words during the convention speech revealed a hard line.

Unlike Palin, who became candidate without much preparation, Ryan has been preparing for his appearance on the grand political stage ever since he entered Congress 14 years ago. Romney’s running mate has a battle plan ready that will have a bigger impact on America’s democracy than all of Palin’s rhetorical attacks put together. It is nothing less than a declaration of war on social solidarity in America.

Ryan’s political philosophy draws on the writings of the Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek, who condemned the modern welfare state as a “road to serfdom.” As a young man, the Republican politician devoured Ayn Rand’s capitalist Bible “Atlas Shrugged,” which glorifies selfishness as a noble virtue. Rand depicted the world as a kind of jungle, where the strong are always right and the weak have only themselves to blame for their own weakness.

    Slash-and-Burn Approach

Ryan’s own philosophy calls for making cuts that will affect the weak. Ryan would like to see the introduction of a voucher system to replace Medicare and supports the repeal of President Barack Obama’s healthcare plan, which would affect the 30 million Americans who would receive health insurance under his reform. But cuts would also reach further, to government protection against epidemics, for example, or even to fire fighters. In Ryan’s stripped-down state, there would be little money available for such luxuries.

But wouldn’t such a slash-and-burn approach actually reduce America’s massive debt? Many experts believe it is very unlikely. After all, Ryan also wants to give more to the rich. He would reduce their taxes, so that Mitt Romney, say, who has an estimated personal fortune of around $250 million, would only face a tax rate of 0.82 percent.

The people this would benefit most are billionaire Republican donors. But Ryan still sees himself as a man of the people. He loves to quote Ronald Reagan’s assertion that, when the rich have more, their wealth will “trickle down” to all citizens. He seems to forget that the results of that experiment are well known. In 1982, Reagan had to massively increase taxes because the US budget deficit had grown so huge.

But that doesn’t shake Ryan’s convictions. In terms of hypocrisy, he is a worthy heir to those Republicans who condemn the state but are happy to use it when they want to ban something that does not fit into their worldview. Ryan, who is supposedly so skeptical about government, has supported more abortion restrictions than his party colleague Todd Akin, who recently caused a scandal with his remarks about “legitimate rape.”

    Cold Comfort

In terms of foreign policy, too, Ryan supports a strong state of the hawkish variety touted by American neocons. Even the right-wing Weekly Standard, the same conservative publication that drove George W. Bush to invade Iraq and who “discovered” Palin four years ago, recommended Ryan as candidate.

    There’s more scary stuff…..

As the exiting crowds are corralled by fleets of bike cops, the television news personalities stand around looking bored in the kleig lights, waiting to say their 30-second piece before throwing it back to the anchors. None of them look pleased. The convention simply wasn’t as exciting as many in the media had hoped. Republicans didn’t go full-on teabagger at the convention (even if they did in private, and in events around the convention), instead couching their language in disappointment for the president. They didn’t mention social issues much at all, because they know that voters side with liberals (and social libertarians) on issues like abortion, gay marriage, and easy access to birth control. Instead, they talk about small business and hope that nobody notices that when they talk about deregulation, they’re really talking about deregulation for multinational corporations, and they talk about fixing Medicare while hoping that nobody notices they’re really talking about undoing one of the most popular government programs in the nation. Altogether, it’s a finely edited document that falls apart on close examination, but Republicans are hoping that their message won’t be examined.

So the messaging sounded inoffensive, but when you really think about what is being said at this convention, you realize that all the red, white, and blue bunting and clothing and video imagery is a put-on. All the talk about patriotism, about supporting the troops, is just lip service. This is the most unpatriotic crowd I have ever been a part of. What they are against is community. Every sentence is devoid of empathy. Every finger-wag is aimed directly at an American who can’t afford health insurance, who hasn’t had a raise on their minimum-wage job in four years. Even as they rail against a statement that the president never really made, they are talking about tearing America down and leaving something meaner and greedier in its place. They’re radicals—radicals who’ve gone over the edge and are trying to make their radicalism mainstream.

    snip/

It always comes back to fear. Fear is the single greatest enemy of survival. When you’re afraid, you can’t think ahead, you can’t plan. You try to get out of immediate danger. You climb a tree when a bear is chasing you. You dive to the ground when a snow-blind 18-wheeler is skidding right at you. You open your mouth and scream when your foot gets caught under a rock at the bottom of a river. You get mauled and eaten. You get crushed into toothpaste. You drown, and they never find your body. There is nothing left of you that resembles you anymore, and it’s all because of fear. And fear is understandable. Fear happens to all of us, there’s no shame in succumbing to a momentary burst of fear.

But when you choose to live your life in fear, you lose that most essential thing that makes you human. When you support George W. Bush’s Patriot Act, as the woman to my left with the cowboy hat full of Bush/Cheney buttons probably did, you’re supporting fear. When you try to take food away from starving people, or deny good students access to higher education, or steal choices away from the next generation of women, you may not be a monster, but you are making monstrous choices.

EXCELLENT< EXCELLENT PIECE! MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!! Rather pathetic way to live…..
