YET ANOTHER MAINSTREAM EUPHEMISM FOR LYING – “FINESSING THE FACTS”

When Candidates Lie, REAL Journalists Say They ‘Finessed the Facts’

Posted on 09/03/2012 by Jim Naureckas

    ——————————–

Why don’t you show us how a real journalist does it, Ms. Stanley?

On Thursday, Mr. [Chris] Matthews fulminated against Paul Ryan’s–admittedly misleading–assertion that Mr. Obama did nothing to prevent the closing of a GM plant in 2008. Then Fox News attacked media figures who attacked Mr. Ryan. CNN took the harder course of parsing the entire issue: The correspondent Tom Foreman gave a long, industrious analysis that explained where and how Mr. Ryan finessed the facts.

There you go: To avoid staining your journalistic siblings, never “fulminate” against political deception. Instead, when candidates lie, gently report that they “finessed the facts.”

With journalistic standards like that in place, the Romney/Ryan team will never pay a price for refusing “to let our campaign be dictated by factcheckers.”

My normally sane hubby gets so angry at the GOP candidates that he keeps saying “When Mitt calls up Barack to concede the election – he should just hang up on him!” Seriously. I keep trying to explain why this would be a bad idea and it won’t happen, but I’ve heard it about ten times now anyhow. My hubby really likes this idea.

Heck, I kinda like envisioning it myself. “Hello, Mr. President – this is Mitt Rom…” CLICK.

    • September 4, 2012 at 12:59 pm

I like that too. There’s only so much that a man should have to take, and I’m sure that “click” would be felt by all of President Obama’s supporters because it will (hopefully) signify the last we’ll have to see of lying Mitt Romney. Let him go enjoy his millions.

Rove, Koch Brothers Call it Quits in Pennsylvania

    By Beth

    —————————————-

I guess money can’t buy everything…including the state of Pennsylvania.
Karl Rove’s Super PAC, Crossroads GPS, and the Koch Brother’s Americans for Prosperity have given up the ghost in the Keystone State and pulled their advertising dollars, conceding victory to President Obama. From The Daily Kos:
    .
    .
Still, throwing that amount of money out the window toward a fruitless endeavor kinda makes me want to heave – it’s obscene and obnoxious – but it gives me hope, in a weird, twisted sort of way.
Just because you have the most dollars, doesn’t mean you’re gonna win – at least in Pennsylvania.

Loved this story about James Taylor at DNC, a lifelong North Carolina progressive who will perform at DNC.

Think others who remember him from back in the day (early 1970s) and those who love folk music will as well.

According to nameless, faceless Politico woman on Alex Wagner’s show, Americans “don’t feel a connection” to President Obama, even though his favorabilities are high or he’s immensely popular or whatever dumb thing she said which totally went against her contention. Woman person feels Michelle Obama will help us like the President more. Yeah, I’m hoping to “like him more.”

On twitter the word is out! Karl Rove and Co. are pulling all money out of PA. It took them long enough to see that throwing money after a bad candidate is not worth the loss. How many more states will this happen to? Look up NE. I change the channel every time an ad comes on for that group….this is FL.

    • September 4, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Other than Adelson, who desperately needs someone in the WH to keep him out of jail, I suspect that irrespective of how much money they have, even Birchers like the Koch Brothers, are rich partly because of how skilled they are in calculating risk v ROI. They’re soon to realize they’d better save their $$$ and use it to lobby because they’re just pouring into the toilet spending it on ads for #BainMitt & #LyinRyan. Just my opinion, of course, but PA is quite telling.

Linda, remember what Halperin call the President. Why we would pay that S.O.B any attention is beyond me. Yes they wanted to try to stir up some trouble, because the Dems have their President showing up speaking. The Reps were to scared to have G.W. Bush or Dick Cheney show up.

That’s our media for you. They are always trying to drive a wedge between the Clinton’s and the Obama’s. They figured this would be great to run with since President Clinton has a major role at the Convention. It would have been all that the pundits would have been talking about.

Have a told you lately that I hate our media?

      • 61 jacquelineoboomer
        September 4, 2012 at 1:11 pm

The media is all over the place. All warnings that nobody likes the Obamas. Friar Chuck Toad can barely “not” finish a sentence (ever notice he NEVER finishes a thought when he speaks?). Howard Fineman has brought both of his personalities with him to Charlotte, hoping that and the hair – and last night’s pink tie – will work with the ladies, I guess. Politico people seem to be multiplying before our very eyes, and I’m pretty sure it’s all being done artificially.

Nope – they can’t steal MY joy. I’m too busy laughing at them.

There are all sorts of articles appearing, and many of them seem to push the theme that Barack Obama is responsible for the fact that white blue-collar men are not supporting him. Clinton , this genius, was the one able to attract them. So, so, short-sided.

What about the effects of more than a decade of Fox News and the peddling of white resentment ?

There are a couple of articles on The Daily Beast that have made me very unhappy. Mad as a matter of fact. One of them goes on and on about how Pres. Obama is not as business friendly as Pres. Clinton. The other one is pushing the meme that Pres. Obama is counting on the intellectual elite, on single women, and on poor minorities, and has abandoned families. SO MUCH BS.

You just scratch your head when you read those articles, and you contrast their analysis with what President Obama has DONE for small businesses, for families ( health care, pell grants and on and on).

Folks, it’s so evident that President Obama is paying a price for his refusal to subscribe to the Beltway culture, his refusal to “work” the DC cocktail circuit. President Obama has not cultivated the egos of the “opinion makers” in Washington ; he thought that they would look at his actions in a rational way and understand his motivations, his actions. What’s become evident is that the pundits have never listened carefully. They’re talking among themselves, and they’re also influenced by the political foes of Mr. Obama who are in constant contact with them: the allies of Bill Clinton, the DLC gang, the republicans, the big lobbies, etc. They see President Obama through his opponents’ lens. So it’s not surprising they have such a different picture than us.

Donna, I hate the media too. I don’t mind criticism, it’s the sheer amount of pure bullsh*** and stupidity that I can’t take.

The media is trying so hard to put a negative spin on this convention, but most people are not paying attention to the msm. If they are interested in the speeches, they will tune is during primetime and hear for themselves. No one wants to be told what to think by overpaid talking heads.

Hiddddeeeeeee OOOOOO’s!!!! Wassup on another great getting up day in da TOD hood!!!! I feel good about this week. We’re going to hear some mighty fine speakers, hear some rock ‘em, sock ‘em music, and dancing in the streets moving us FORWARD!!!!!

My political take today is I think the Pubs are in a kerfungleimplosionistic mood and meltdown. There’s something off kilter and it seems like they’re doing desperate stuff. I believe they are looking at some internals that is causing them some real angst. I believe the frat boys of the campaign, the running scared guys of the RNC, and the good ol’ moneyed cartel boys are not on the same page. This is gonna cost them and they know it, but egos and insanity won’t let them get it together.

PS: Congrats and big ups to Jackie, new grandmom. You’re in for a real treat that you can’t even imagine yet. Good wishes to the new mom and dad as well.

Paul Ryan: I Wasn’t Blaming Obama For GM Plant Closure ( LyinRyan Part Deux )

Vice-presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) backpedaled Monday from a claim in his Republican National Convention speech that President Barack Obama was responsible for the closure of a General Motors plant that in fact closed during the presidency of George W. Bush.

“What they are trying to suggest is that I said Barack Obama was responsible for the plant shutdown in Janesville. That is not what I was saying, read the speech,” he told NBC’s “Today.” “What I was saying is the president ought to be held to account for his broken promises. After the plant was shut down he said he would lead efforts to restore the plant. It’s still idle.”

SENATOR SHERROD BROWN – FIGHTING FOR OHIO

    TV ad: “Protecting Ohio Jobs”

Sherrod’s spent his entire career standing up against policies that benefit China at the expense of American workers, and that’s why he led passage in the Senate of a bill that stands up for Ohio manufacturing by cracking down on China’s illegal currency manipulation. Sherrod believes that if competing on a level playing field, no one does it better than the American worker — that’s why he will continue standing up to China, and fighting for every job in Ohio every way he knows how.
