‘The President and Me Go Way Back’

Six-month-old Madelynn Schnedler wears a shirt with a photo of her being held by President Barack Obama on his last visit to Iowa on April 25, during a campaign rally at the University of Iowa September 7, 2012. Madelynn’s parents Eric and Katie Schnedler had the shirt printed with the words ‘The President and Me Go Way Back’.

Great post from Smartypants! Her comment on the part of the president’s speech about citizenship:

“Before I get into the depth of how President Obama used that concept I want to say that from what I’ve read and seen so far, Melissa Harris-Perry was the only one to recognize why the use of that word would be especially important for this President. Last night in commenting on the speech at MSNBC she pointed out that what he was saying is that citizenship is about something more than birth certificates. KA-BOOM! Shoot and score.”

It is a part that really resonated with me too.

Aside from writing my piece for TPV, I’ve pretty much been offline all day, busy doing other things. Thanks to UT and Walking on Sunshine for your kind words on my piece. And that little girl is just too precious.

Ok, going back to catching up on “Through the Wormhole”. Busy day at work tomorrow, and then Sunday I’m at a phonebank in Venice.

Canada closes Tehran embassy, kicks out diplomats

This was reported 8 hours ago but I had just caught it on late news. Israel

(TORONTO) — Canada’s Conservative government said Friday it is shutting its embassy in Tehran and severing diplomatic relations with Iran, which Canada says is providing military assistance to Syria.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said that the Canadian embassy in Tehran will close immediately and Iranian diplomats in Canada have been given five days to leave.

Baird, who serves in a government that is a staunch ally of Israel, said Iran is the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today. “The Iranian regime is providing increasing military assistance to the Assad regime; it refuses to comply with UN resolutions pertaining to its nuclear program; it routinely threatens the existence of Israel and engages in racist anti-Semitic rhetoric )

“It is among the world’s worst violators of human rights; and it shelters and materially supports terrorist groups, requiring the Government of Canada to formally list Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism under the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act.”

Baird said he was worried about the safety of diplomats in Tehran following attacks on the British embassy there.

Britain downgraded ties with Iran following a major attack on its embassy in Tehran in November 2011, which it insists was sanctioned by the Islamic republic’s ruling elite. After the attack, Britain pulled all of its diplomats out of Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats from U.K. soil.

Canada’s relations with Iran have been strained since former Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor helped rescue six Americans from Iran during the hostage crisis in 1980.

Relations became even rockier in 2003 after Zahra Kazemi, a freelance photographer with dual Canadian-Iranian citizenship, died in custody after being arrested while taking photographs outside a Tehran prison in 2003. Canada then recalled its ambassador. Iran also ordered Canada’s ambassador to leave the country after trying unsuccessfully to come to an agreement on an exchange of ambassadors for some time.

All Iranian diplomats in Canada have now been declared “personae non gratae,” Baird said. He also told Canadians to

I heard that earlier tonight and my first thought was to wonder what had happened now because I only caught it in passing. Offspring tried to explain when I asked but was giving me one pundit’s ‘hypocrisy since Canada still has dealings with Russia and China’.

Maybe if Mitt Romney could have took one or two of his blame everything on Obama lines in his speech at his convention, he would had time to thank our troops who is out there defending our country, so he can have the freedom to hide his money in overseas accounts. What a lam excuse Mitt gave for not mentioning the troops.

Does anyone know where J Rewe (sp?) is? Remember how he’d manage to set up a Friday night money bomb? Also, anyone hear from MaryTNurse or Lacey? Oh, of course, the lady from Florida who’d make virtual cookies? That DNC convention has made me very nostalgic!!!

      Hi Barb,

Joe Ruwe and those beautiful kids of his are doing well. I see his posts on Facebook. He doesn’t seem to be much of an Obama supporter any longer. Same with Lace. She’s a “Libertarian” now. MaryTNurse is doing great and is working hard to ensure that PBO wins in Iowa. The lady from Florida was “Aunt Somebody” and I lost touch with her before the President won in 2008.

      • September 8, 2012 at 7:07 am

Joe Ruwe is on Twitter (@jruwe42). . . he may not be such an enthusiastic supporter, but he does tweet stuff for and about the President. I am sure he will be voting for the President again.

Interesting…that Joe Ruwe has ONE tweet on his timeline. I guess I’m comparing his support from 2008 to his support today. This is a guy who raised over $30,000.00 at OFA for PBO and made thousands of calls. I cannot think of a single time that I’ve seen him say anything about the President in the last 2 years. I hope you are right and he will be voting for the President again but his activism along with his vote is badly needed and I no longer see that happening.

Btw- the President is a Political Athlete, when he does these Bus Tours, he dies 2 Events per Day, but he also goes in and out of places, chatting with People and getting a General sense of what’s up. That is important, as well.
