Charles Blow:  Elections often turn on character moments and the slopes of lines. They are about who a candidate reveals himself to be under pressure more than who he says he is on stage…..

Taking that into account, at this moment, President Obama’s chances of being re-elected look stronger than they have in months. The Romney campaign seems to be coming off the tracks with no clear vision for how to get back on.

Romney’s panicky, premature excoriation of the Obama administration over violence in the Middle East — a response that was factually flawed and widely panned — only served to shake the fragile faith of those who might be holding their noses to support him…..

It also doesn’t help that Romney seems incapable of concealing his anxiety. He too often looks like a boy who just stepped on a nail and can’t remember his last tetanus shot.

Liberal Librarian: I think that this week has been a fulcrum not only in the election, but in the very real fight for the soul of the country.

Yes, way too many of our fellow citizens are still addled by hatred and bigotry. Obama should be ahead by 10-15 points, not 4-8. But let’s put that into perspective: Before the conventions, the polling averages had him ahead by at most 2 points. The debacle of Tampa and the triumph of Charlotte, without the media filter, basically reintroduced the country to both parties.

The GOP was seen as a heartless collection of ideologues whose only interest was in achieving power to service its rich backers. There was no positive vision of the future, but a wallowing in the contention that America was “in decline”. Charlotte highlighted a party and a President who believed in the nation, believed in the ability of its citizens to make an adult decision when presented with facts. The country saw a party united in its determination to make life better for all citizens, not just the fortunate few. It was the antithesis of the malaise bruited about by the GOP.

ThinkProgress: Biotechnology firm Monsanto Company, which currently owns most of the patents for America’s staple crops, is already cozy with American lawmakers. A new Nation report, however, indicates that “a very old friend in a very high place” may usher in the corporation’s most prosperous years yet.

The Nation’s investigative report has uncovered how Mitt Romney personally helped Monsanto shed its string of toxic chemical-related scandals and reinvent itself to dominate American agriculture. Monsanto, an early Bain & Company client, was so impressed with Romney that they started bypassing his superiors to deal with him directly.

ThinkProgress: House Republican Leader Eric Cantor announced Friday that after next week, the House will stand in recess until November 13. His plan for a nearly two month vacation will undoubtedly allow more time for campaigning, but will leave several vital bills awaiting action.

Among the important legislation the House will likely not address before the November elections:

1. Violence Against Women Act re-authorization…. 2. The American Jobs Act…. 3. Tax cuts for working families…. 4. Veterans Job Corps Act….

The Independent (UK): …. Mitt Romney has a fight on his hands if he wants to keep using Thin Lizzy music to back his campaign. The widow of Phil Lynott, the band’s legendary frontman, said there was no way the singer would have supported the Republican candidate.

Caroline Lynott-Taraskevics has told the band’s record company to issue a cease and desist order preventing Romney from using Thin Lizzy classics …. she and his mother Philomena were angered after Mr Romney used the anthem The Boys Are Back In Town at the Republican convention in Florida.

The rocker’s mother has said her son would have rejected any association with the Republicans, particularly the Christian right-wing of the party and what she called anti-gay and pro-rich policies.

In a message published by Irish music magazine Hot Press, Ms Lynott-Taraskevics said that were Lynott still alive, he would back Democrat US President Barack Obama.

“Absolutely in no way would Philip have supported Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan and he would have been so happy about Obama becoming US president,” she said.

My personal theory (without checking with PBO ;) ) is that they are adding and emphasizing different pieces of the platform as they accelerate towards election day. If you throw everything out there from now, or even before, it would all be stale by the 6th and wouldn’t resonate as much. Yes most, if not all, of the info is already known to a certain extent, but PBO & VPJoe can now intensify the focus in different areas for maximum impact, and I personally don’t want them pounding the desk every day in September so that the electorate is immune by October. Just my take.

Actually he is starting to insinuate this in his speeches. I have often wondered the same, but in my limited knowledge of politics, and he being the consummate politician, albeit a good one, I figured he may have reason to try and get some work out of them, thus not stepping on their toes, just yet. After all, we, the American people, let him down by allowing these miscreants in in the first place. It’s such a shame he has to work with this form of insubordination to the people, who, if they had any sense of patriotism, would vote them out…..just do a virtual clean sweep.

A question for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to answer is how is giving more money to millionaires and billionaires going to make us better off. And hitting the middle class with a 2000 dollar tax increase, how is that going to make us better off?

Inspired by PBO, I am hitting ‘citizenship’ hard with my second graders this year. I always do make a point of this and we talk a lot about the Civil Rights struggle and people who show courage to stand up for what’s right, but this year I’m going at it hard. I have a great group and we have already begun to discuss and practice our RESPONSIBILITIES as citizens, as well as our rights. I bought a new big poster for my room showing a diverse group of people with the caption “We are all Americans”. One thing that gives me hope: none of the second graders sitting in classroom across the country will think it’s terrifyingly strange to have a black man as president. They will not have the idea that the presidency belongs only to elderly white men.

    • 49 Betsy
      September 15, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I am doing that too with my eighth graders this year as we study American history. Citizenship and what it means will be a major theme throughout this year as we study the constitution in about here weeks, but I have already been weaving it in as we have just been studying the colonies.

    • September 15, 2012 at 12:06 pm

You are imprinting a very good, inspiring message to these young minds. I know that many of these 2nd graders will remember this and carry it with him/her to adulthood and pass it on to their families. You will be that 2nd grade teacher that will remembered for an eternity.

It funny, I am 56yrs old and I still remember those teachers that taught me profound lessons of being a good citizen. I don’t know if they do this anymore but I am thankful to President Obama for mentioning that in his speech. We are all united citizens of this country NOT only individuals out for ourselves and our own families.

Pres. Obama is CRUSHING Mitt Romney in Pennsylvania.

A new poll finds President Obama opening up a commanding 11-point lead in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

A Philadelphia Inquirer poll released on Saturday shows Obama with 50 percent support to Romney’s 39 among likely voters in the state.

Obama has expanded his 8-point lead in the same poll taken last month, where he topped Romney with 51 percent to 42.

Among independent voters, Obama leads the GOP Nominee by 47 percent to 36. He also holds a sizeable lead among female voters 52 to 39 and is ahead among men 46 to 40.
Obama still holds a net positive rating with 56 percent surveyed holding a favorable view to 40 unfavorable.

Romney is underwater, with 48 percent favorable to 46 unfavorable.

With under two months left before the election, the poll’s results show an uphill climb for the Romney campaign in Pennsylvania. Earlier this month, the Romney team began rolling out a series of ads in key battleground states but have dropped earlier ad campaigns in Pennsylvania.

      • 63 hopefruit2
        September 15, 2012 at 11:11 am

From what I understand, most polling and election models have already factored voter suppression (if it happens) into account – and STILL show PBO leading by a sizable margin in PA. This is why the GOP has pulled out because they’ve already ceded the state of PA to Obama – voter suppression or not.

When Mitt Romney loses—and, hopefully, when Democrats secure majorities in both Houses of Congress—I expect to see the end of the Republican Party. As the Bryan Fischer quote indicates, the rabid conservatives will blame the debacle on the GOP not being conservative enough. We might see an emergence of a radically right wing party, on the order of the National Front in France: nativist, fundamentally religious, and so far to the right as to be unable to appeal to voters outside of their circle….

    *******************************************

    extraordinary piece…LL…as alwsys…

My thoughts are that we must ALWAYS be vigilant of our rights…because …if we are successful in regaining the House and securing the Senate…those force on the right will NOT rest…and keep in mind they will be rabid almost FASCIST in nature… so as we have seen since the 2010 elections…every election is important and we can NEVER…EVER… think that altho the enemy has been defeated …the enemy is dead…so we have to be ever ready to DEFEAT the enemy when they raise their head!!

Morning TODsters!!!! How great to meet another great getting up day in O city! I’m hoping that the uprisings of protest in the middle east calm down over the week-end and normalcy is restored there.

My political take today is that actually, it was a good thing that Mitt showed his hand in the foreign/international arena. Though the circumstances were tragic, the world got a chance to see the insensitive war monger he is. He wanted to make this election a referendum only on PBO’s failed economic policies. The country seemed OK to make it all about that and nothing else. Had Mitt not failed to mention the troops in his acceptance speech, no attention would have been paid to his foreign views, other than war with Iran. It’s helpful for PBO that Mitt inserted himself into the fray in an unprecedented way.

Mitt had to change is strategy cause the RWNJ of his party wouldn’t let him track to the middle after his primary. These last round of poll numbers (his internals must be even worse), has caused him to forget about the undecideds or independents in swing states. Instead, the only strategy left for him is to get his red meat neanderthals to the polls in huge numbers to offset the few undecideds.

    • 79 EricFive
      September 15, 2012 at 12:45 pm

This is good news and shows that without the media filter protecting him, Mitt’s ideas are toxic to a majority of Americans. Mitt’s “lead” on handling the economy was based totally on people not knowing what his economic plans are. Mitt and the MSM wanted Mitt to remain the “hypothetical” republican candidate. After the conventions, which gave voters the two visions of America the candidates had without the media filter, polls started moving in PBO’s favor. Political conventions had ahistorical impact on this election because the media propaganda filter has been so strong for the last few years. We should have some sort of “convention” prior to midterm elections to get the democrats’ message out (although the MSM probably would not give any such convention any air time).

Eric Cantor must be scared to death that he is going to lose his Congressional seat. Calling a recess until Nov. 13 is unheard of. His best bet would be to stay in session, pass some helpful bills, and then go home the last week to brag. This gives the Democrats more to run on. Total dereliction of duty…..just highlighting their dereliction of duty for two years! Frankly, I don’t understand their thinking, except that their hatred is so strong they absolutely canNOT see the forest for their spindly little trees.

Anyone else kinda afraid that Romney/Ryan will start receiving intelligence briefing soon? After this past week, I suspect that Romney is outsourcing his FP creds to his advisors. Whatever they say he should say he does. So I fully expect that Romney will hand off the classified briefings to those advisors and I would not be surprised to have Romney use this classified information to score political points.

    http://nymag.com/news/politics/powergrid/mitt-romney-middle-east-unrest-2012-9/

“And so it does, with the past week proving another maxim: that when shit rains, shit pours. In the space of 72 hours, what began, horrifically enough on September 11, with the murder of four Americans (including one of our best and bravest, Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya) at the consulate in Benghazi spiraled into a region-wide upheaval, with angry Muslim protests directed at American diplomatic missions erupting in sixteen countries. Suddenly, the president was facing just the kind of externality that his team had been bracing for: a full-blown foreign-policy crisis less than eight weeks out from Election Day. And a campaign marked by stasis and even torpor was jolted to life as if by a pair of defibrillator paddles applied squarely to its solar plexus.”

“Moments like this are not uncommon in presidential elections, and when they come, they tend to matter. For unlike the posturing and platitudes that constitute the bulk of what occurs on the campaign trail, big external events provide voters with something authentic and valuable: a real-time test of the temperament, character, and instincts of the men who would be commander-in-chief. And when it comes to the past week, the divergence between the resulting report cards could hardly be more stark.”

I’ve been scared about this for a long time. Willard’s recent screw-up only validated my fears. I don’t think the briefings he gets should be more than what congress gets. Willard should NOT have any actual detailed information on ANYTHING. who knows what he would do with the information after he loses?

I don’t like this….his advisors are all neocons from the Bush years.

      • September 15, 2012 at 11:55 am

Now I just read somewhere that President Obama commented in an interview that the briefing he received as candidate were nowhere near what he he receives as president. I don’t suppose they share any really sensitive material.

Although not an embassy, let’s not forget that 9/11/01 occurred during GWB’s presidency, and GWB did not bring the perpetrator of that crime to justice, PBO did. These neocons have been discredited, although they remain in their jobs spewing talking points and whitewashing history thanks to our corrupt media.

        September 15, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Well of course 9-11-01. But so we are NOT politicizing 9-11. After that terror attacks, other attacks continued during GW wrecking yrs.

        • 139 EricFive
          September 15, 2012 at 1:32 pm

That’s like saying GWB was good for the economy, except for the financial collapse. Stating a FACT is not politicizing. We should not allow the GOP to set the parameters of the argument (used to be that politics ended at the “waters edge”, but somehow that doesn’t apply to PBO). If Gore was president during 9/11 do you think the GOP would not have exploited the tragedy for political gain? If so, what in there behavior leads you to believe this? In addition, is there any comparison between the current protests in the Middle East and the absolute chaos GWB unleashed by starting an unjust war in Iraq (or does that not count either)?

Exactly! Even more pertinent, on 9/11/01, Some thing else unprecedented happened: The U.S. HQ of the Department of Defense was attacked. Bush people like Rumsfeld, who was the SoD, have the audacity to attack President Obama. The media never dares to challenge them.

Ryan is speaking in Oldsmar Florida, about 5 miles away from me.
Of course, Alex Twit is a Republican, so She happily puts Him on.
As I listen to Him, he mimics the President speeches.
Saying what kind of country do we want, protecting the middle class, reform Medicare to protect Seniors, yada yada…
This is such a Weasel Campaign, look at the Crowd, all those People are already in the Robney Camp… Nobody is coming out to hear their message of lies and deceit.
It’s just really annoying to hear their BS daily, mimicking the President. What a philosophy?

They try and copy the president.

But you know what, nothing beats the REAL Thing.

Imitation is still the sincerest form of flattery. The TBGOPers are fakes.

The worst drought in 50 years. Crops drying up. I knew Repubs were bad but this is crazy. farmers need some help ASAP

They don’t CARE about this country or its problems. THey care about power and money. I hope these farmers wake up and vote for their economic interests instead of being conned by the GOP.

  50. September 15, 2012 at 12:13 pm

The reason the Republicans are not doing anymore work for this session(until the Electiion), is because the All go Home to Districts that hate Government spending.
Think about it? This is why Congress is a mess, the redistricting has allowed for the Congress to be All Tea Baggers and all 99% Peeps. 2 different philosophies, which means no compromise.
    It’s sad.

Here is the key to who is going to win this election: the Trust factor. In 2007, well before anyone imagined that PBO would emerge as the Dem nominee and he was losing to Hillary (and ocassionally Edwards) on issues like the economy, leadership, beat the GOP, etc., he was winning by a double-digit margin on the issue of trust. That’s what voters rely on when they’re at the voting booth. Who do they trust more. Trust is very, very important.

  52. September 15, 2012 at 12:23 pm

During the Republican Primaries, when the whole Country was subject to Crazy People, the Media said their was plenty if time left, we have the Whole Summer, The VP pick, the Conventions and the Debates.
Well, the Summer is gone, The VP Pick is done. And the Conventions are History, and Willard is still losing.
So, what is the Talking point, 50+ Days out from the Election? Their is still plenty of time, we still have the debates, etc.
    Garbage! Pure Garbage…!

I hadn’t thought of Thin Lizzy in years. Great band. Used to love Dancing In The Moonlight. I have never seen one political party get so many cease and desist letters.

What Republicans would love to see in America. Was this a “legitimate rape?”

    http://www.thelocal.de/society/20120914-44961.html

A German teenager who said she was raped by a 31-year-old man was told by the judge she had not defended herself enough for the law to convict him – simply saying no was not enough.

G/afternoon Tod. On my way out to do phone-banking. Wish me luck :-) Been doing this since 2008 but somehow people seem more
angry and yell a lot more this time around. Don’t let it bother me though since I know what the end goal is. PBO must win…Forward.

“If your party can run the nation for eight years, and then have a national
convention and not invite Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Karl Rove or Tom
DeLay… you’re not a political movement, you’re the witness protection program.” – Bill Maher:
