I’m going to need them to have this ad run on TV. They can cut it down to 30 or 60 seconds if they wish but this is gripping.

From the end of the previous thread:
In line with a comment up above, the Dem candidate’s internal polling in IN shows a major pickup opportunity as Donnelly (D) is leading Mourdock (TP) by 3. PBO is down, but only by 6 and Romney is at 47%, not at the 50% he will need to be. If you have extra bucks, think about Donelly as an option. http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2012/09/donnelly-mourdo-1.php

  11. September 19, 2012 at 3:47 pm

    Just watched it.

You know the part that I think was most effective? When John King said that his family had been on food stamps for a few years when he was a child. They were embarassed, but his mother was glad that her kids could eat. Just devastating.

      September 19, 2012 at 3:53 pm

Yes, that was the most telling part. Very human, very telling. As a mother I would do ANYTHING to feed my children, whether or not it “embarrassed” my husband. You know mama grizzlies!!!

I agree LL. His brief story illustrated, “yet but for the grace of God, go I” so dramatically. It crushes Romney. This video is devastating.

I don’t know if I can watch it yet …. even John King? He came down against Romney’s words? Oh my. You see, I had not shared this yet, but when I was a child, my parents had to be on some form of welfare for a while. I don’t think we received any money, but we got “commodities”? … staples, like powdered milk, flour, (I don’ know what else, I was pretty young). It really hurt my mother to have to do that, but like his mother, she was glad for the groceries so we could eat. I guess maybe we had something like food stamps too, although I am not sure they existed then. If John King (whom I despise) can share his story, then I can too. See John, we are all in this together. I am tearing up.

Ladyhawke referenced an article on previous post: Romney’s 47% Rant is Direct Attack on His Own Base. Which leads back to my asking a question about 2 days ago on TOD: who is Romney’s base? We keep seeing references to him riling up his base (by slamming President Obama, etc.) and I too feel like the 47% he has dismissed IS his base: the elderly Medicare recipients – Don’t Mess With My Medicare – who really don’t know how they came to be so lucky as to have Medicare in the first place and have no inkling of what a Romney/Ryan ticket would mean to that; who ride around in their motorized wheelchairs obtained through Medicare or Disability, and who hate our President because they see him as a Muslim and a socialist! They are so dependent on government, from their Medicare to their food stamps, to the roads and sidewalks they terroize the world on with their motorized wheelchairs (we have several of them here – we drive certain roads very, very carefully), the very ones who DO cling to their religion and their guns, who are pro-life and want government to dictate that, and to dictate women’s rights. They are largely uneducated (formally anyway) … I know these people; they are all around me and guess what, they are putting up Romney signs in their yards! And he just dissed them all big time!

Maureen Dowd | Let them eat crab cake

By Maureen Dowd WASHINGTON — Oh, for the days when we thought Mitt Romney didn’t stand for anything. As a secret video from a Boca Raton fundraiser with high rollers in May shows, Romney in private stands for so many bizarre things that it’s hard to tell what’s crazier — his domestic policy or his foreign policy. Less than 50 days before the election, we learn that Romney may have given up on half of America and on Mideast peace. In a reply to a fat cat at the $50,000-a-plate dinner, he wrote off 47 percent of the country as deadbeats, freeloaders and “victims” who feel they’re entitled to stuff — stuff like basic sustenance.“Well, there are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” he said.

“All right? There are 47 percent who are with him. Who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they’re entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”The candidate, who pays so little in taxes relative to his income that he has to hide tax returns and money in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands, then added, condescendingly: “These are people who pay no income tax.”“So my job is not to worry about those people,” he blithely concluded. “I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

What kind of presidential candidate shrugs off wooing whole groups — we’re talking many seniors and white-working-class voters in battleground states who are, if he actually knew what he was talking about, his own natural constituencies?

“We thought Romney was secretly moderate, but it turns out that he’s secretly cruel, a social Darwinist just like his running mate.”

This says it all, although I have not perceived Romney as a moderate since the primaries. Both Romney and Ryan are Social Darwinists. I found it so ironic that so many white Christian evangelicals are actually Social Darwinists!!

Favoring capital over labor in the tax code is redistribution.

Handing out no-bid government contracts is redistribution.

Privatizing programs funded with taxpayer money is redistribution.

Allow the rich to steal with impunity while punishing common thieves is redistribution.

    Any more lies, Romney?

I can’t see the video at work, but I can get the gist from you guys’ comments. It reminds me of something I’ve thought a few times: I know that every campaign dollar is precious, and I know that the battleground states are where they are needed the most. However, I would love for some of these kitchen table issues to get an airing in some of the reddest of the red parts of this country. A populist message targeting the middle class and working Americans of all classes could have maybe a sliver of resonance where it’s not expected. After all, as PBO says, he works for all the people of the United States. He may not ever win over enough redstaters to flip a state, but maybe enough to change a few hearts and minds, which may lead to change down the road.

There was a Democratic strategist on Bill Press this morning who said the same thing. That Dem’s should have started a robust narrative in these states already. Yes, it will take about 15 years as demographics change to get the message through but it should be part of their messaging and spending plan. He was annoyed that we’ve just written the South off entirely.

      • September 19, 2012 at 5:27 pm

I can see us trying to turn the south already. We’ve started with Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. We build from there. The Deep South is going to take a generation to turn, but at least we have those 3 states from which to build. I think what will help is for those states to see states which adopt Democratic policies succeed; they they’ll wonder why their GOP governments can’t deliver the same results.

Exactly. Thank you. I personally think that was part of the reason why the Castro twins from Texas were given some visibility at the DNC. I read an article last year that indicated something along the lines that Texas was one of 4 states where whites were no longer the majority; that the state is growing fast with a significant demographic shift to Latino, African Americans, other immigrants and younger people with more progressive leanings; and its not all concentrated in Austin. Texas certainly has more than its share of sobering statistics and their voter disenfranchisement is legendary, but the state seems to be approaching a tipping point where the “good ole boy” conservative ruling class is a dying breed. Long game peeps.

Some here didn’t like it, but I mentioned this a year ago and the suggestion came from Sen. Webb. He said Obama should go into the heart of appalachia and other poor but red areas and make his case. He said he had a good case to make to these folk and they liked someone who looked them in the eye and say it to them. Still think it was a good suggestion cuz Obama has a way of coming across as reasanable.

Why is it that some rich folks( not all) who have been blessed with much, seem to have such dislike for those who have less.

      • 73 Diane
        September 19, 2012 at 5:01 pm

Anniebella, my personal answer is that many of us with less money love our lives. Many of us are in jobs where we are givers (teachers, police, fire fighters, EMTS, etc). We don’t become rich, but we lead rich lives. We make a difference. We volunteer, we care about others. In turn, others care about us. We are the actual rich people. Accumulating money with no thought or concern for others seems to me to be a very shallow existance. Maybe they simply cannot tolerate our happiness.

      • 74 nathkatun7
        September 19, 2012 at 5:45 pm

I think many rich folks falsely believe they became rich purely as a result of their own individual efforts. I am sure you’ve heard people who repeat the expression of pulling oneself up from one’s own boot-straps. As Dr. King once said, it’s so cruel to tell a bootless man to pull himself up from his own bootstraps.

nice little piece ( from google news, but originally slate) about miss ann’s response to the 47% issue.

‘ Mitt Romney’s response to the release of the now-infamous “47 percent” video may, at this point, be doing more damage than damage control. Part of the problem is the campaign doesn’t have a deep bench of sympathetic spokespeople. So they lean heavily on Ann Romney, hoping that her obvious femaleness makes an adequate substitute for empathy. Perhaps they’re running her too ragged, as she seemed tired and off her game in this interview with a Denver news station that the campaign first posted and then swiftly yanked, perhaps realizing that “Mitt doesn’t disdain the poor” doesn’t sound that comforting to the nonmillionaire masses. ‘

GOOD. Letterman basically did an hour long interview with our President on the level that a truly professional commentator/reporter/journalist from a reputable network/magazine/newspaper should be able to do and is not doing it! Letterman is supposedly “entertainment” and yet, last night’s interview was (yes, they joked around some) for the most part insightful, thoughtful, probing, and he asked questions that not only he wanted answers to but I am sure he felt some Americans wanted answers to. Then, lo and behold, he gave our President time to answer them without interrupting, without trying to direct the answers or to spin them in any way. Letterman rules!

The question has been posed upthread – Just WHO is Romney’s base?

It’s rather simple: People who *HATE* President Obama with every fiber of their being. These people are so wacked, and unhinged, facts have NO PLACE or bearing on THEIR REALITY.

You want an eye-opening experience? Search Twitter for #teaparty or any of their current memes like #RememberWhenObama – for what insanity is shooting around in their brains.

Facts and reality are not present. They’ve been fed so many lies, they’ve become deranged and many I believe honestly need to be 5250′d before someone gets hurt.

But instead, Rush & Co just keep egging them on. They won’t be happy until Rwanda happens here, and they call themselves Christians. They’re so blinded by their own hate they can’t see they’ve become the thing they fear and despise most – The US version of Al Qeada/Taliban – Christianists.

The good thing is that there are not enough people who hate President Obama with every fiber of their being for Romney to win in November. He needs to reach out to the middle, and he’s doing a lousy job of that.

Rush & Co are making beaucoup bucks fomenting hate, so I actually think they would be fine with Obama’s re-election.

Almost three in 10 independent voters said Mitt Romney’s comments on the “47 percent” would make them less likely to vote for him in November, nearly twice the number who said the remarks make them more likely to support the GOP presidential nominee.

While a majority of independents — 53 percent — said the comments would have no impact on their vote, 29 percent said it would make them less likely to back Romney, according to a Gallup poll. Fifteen percent said it would make a Romney vote more likely.
