Cannot wait for the President to appear with aka overshadow Willard at the Oct. 18 Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner in NY. I’m sure everybody recalls his superb humor in ’08 with McGrumpy doing his jokes right alongside of him. Both rose to the occasion and appreciated each other’s presentations (as I recall! I have a tendency to only remember the good stuff! But I think McCain enjoyed what our guy said).

Guess Romney will be in whiteface makeup that evening.

With all due respect, that Horhay (sp) person with his “you promised” can go to hell. My people, AA’s were promised 40 acres and a mule coming out of hardships of slavery, and we carried on without those promised goods. Give me a fuckin break here. No offense to any Latinas here, but I don’t like anyone pressing PBO on something he has been restricted from putting in place. Promises, promises.

This is a fantastic opportunity for President Obama to show American voters AND the world what he is REALLY made of. All this aggressive questioning is being met with thorough, comprehensive, detailed and most importantly, factually correct responses.

The moderators actually look petty and childish (and somewhat ignorant) by the time PBO is finished answering his questions.

can someone please tell me what I’m not seeing in terms of all the press I see and read about Romney being a good debater. Last night, some of the village were commenting on Romney at the Univision forum and many were saying that Obama will have his hands full with Romney…uh what?

Did I miss something? Is Romney better one on one than in the clown parade that was the GOP primary. The only one on one debates I’ve seen from him is the one with Ted Kennedy and from what I read the one he had for Gov of Mass was nothing to call home about.

    Seriously, enlighten me please.

    • 63 EricFive
      September 20, 2012 at 3:27 pm

The MSM is building up Mitt as a great debater for two reasons, imho: First, what else does Mitt have left? He bungled the month of August when pundits were saying he was going to hit his stride. His campaign is going in the wrong direction, so the only game changer left are the debates. The MSM, as it did for McCain in 2008, already know they will declare Mitt the winner of the debates. So this is setting the foundation for the Mitt’s big comeback. And secondly, they are providing cover for the lies that Mitt will be spewing during the debates. The MSM will conflate Mitt’s penchant for lying as being skill at debating. I doubt the moderators will call Mitt on his lying during the debates, so the MSM is banking on PBO not being able to handle Mitt’s lies. I think the MSM is wrong, but that is my theory for why they are making Mitt out to be a great debater.

    • 64 nathkatun7
      September 20, 2012 at 11:25 pm

They are trying to subliminally prepare you to accept what they are planning to do after each debate: declare Romney the winner. Who knows, may be they plan to give Romney the questions in advance.

    September 20, 2012 at 2:51 pm

And this line of questioning is exactly what the debates are going to look like. I don’t question that PBO can handle himself but these media folks are looking for a soundbite or a reaction that they can run with. They care nothing about substance.

I’m getting back to work will catch up on this later.

    • 106 sherijr
      September 20, 2012 at 2:58 pm

too right Donna… the questions will always be bs attacks by the ‘journalists’ & ‘mediators’,. But POTUS remains too smart for their games.

    • 107 hopefruit2
      September 20, 2012 at 2:59 pm

The media may not care about substance – but the voters do. And that’s what matters. PBO is not talking to the media, he’s talking to the voters, who by and large do NOT respect or trust the talking heads/corporate-owned moderators and their agenda.

I think PBO and his supporters (who are the majority of America and the WORLD) will emerge victorious in this election, and I’m actually looking forward to the debates where PBO sends a message to the MedicaCorp to either be part of the solution, or STFU and get out of the way.

Right now, it’s the moderators who are looking uninformed, petty and ridiculous. Not PBO. You don’t try to one-up this man in a debate, whether you are his opponent, or whether you are the moderator.

I think some people have yet to learn that lesson, but better late than never!!!

    • 121 Don
      September 20, 2012 at 3:09 pm

The reason they haven’t learned that lesson yet is because they think “They” will be one to finally trip-up President Obama. And that’s partly President Obama’s fault because he makes them think that they actually have a chance of beating him. Kind of like the Venus-Flytrap thing, it looks good and smells good and is very yummy, so you come on inside like its all good. The next thing you know, your ass is dead.

Accomplishing Immigration reform. They kept harping on that meme for the ENTIRE forum despite a detailed and sensible explanation from PBO as to why he didn’t accomplish immigration reform in his first term, along with his desire to do so in his second term. But, but but, “you broke your promise, you broke your promise, you broke your promise, you broke your promise…”

But the funny thing is despite their BS, they are the ones who come out looking like foolish idiots. Thanks to sites like Twitter, TOD, The People’s View, SmartyPants, etc., they cannot get away with these games anymore. Even in 2008, Twitter and pro-Obama blogs like TOD were not as widely used or up and running as they are now. And so people now have instant access to critiques of these moderators and their bias, in ways that they didn’t before.

Not everyone is undocumented. There are plenty of issues that matter.

      • 160 cookemom
        September 20, 2012 at 3:43 pm

I know meta. It just seemed to me that the questions were one note about ‘you promised’. Rather, they could have acknowledged what had already been accomplished. At the least, the moderators could have made it known to their audience that PBO had to sign an executive order to get the Dream Act because of the Repub roadblock. That’s why I said that. If the moderators were going to make it a seemingly single issue forum, then the single issue answer could very well be the challenge of who said, “I’ll repeal the Dream Act”

It appeared to me that the moderators didn’t want to explore those other issues that mattered. They wasted a good opportunity to showcase those issues.

  56. 173 4morefor44

well that was a nice warm up for PBO to prepare for the insane “moderators” he’ll face in the us debates. he was outstanding handling it. this is going to be good! he’s seems so comfortable in his role now now that he’s had a few years. in 2008, even though he was the best by far in the primaries and the general, PBO would sometimes seem a little unsure of how to answer some things, but now, wow, he’s nailing it!

i’d like to see him explain to the viewers a little more about how there was the famous “do nothing congress” many years ago, and how the republican congress puts the do-nothing congress to shame. truly. he can then pivot the message as to why people need to vote for democrats across the board, which he did reference in his closing statement. this is a good sign that he’s moving in that direction with his messaging. yessssss!!!

    • 183 nathkatun7
      September 20, 2012 at 11:55 pm

I’ve never been impressed with the American way of conducting Presidential debates. Actually, it’s a misnomer to call them debates. I prefer to call them joint news conferences by opposing candidates. And given the state of U.S. corporate media, which prefers sensationalism over serious substance about real issues, I doubt that we will “see some good substantive questions” asked by these moderators.

  62. 184 sherijr

Because Mitt is a failure as a candidate.. and because most of America is becoming wise to the fact that he’ll be an even bigger failure as a President… be absolutely certain that from now to election day, the media will do their utmost to shore him up- we will be running against media far more than we are against romney.. imo.

Great thanks to you Chips for creating this magnificent space that make it possible for UT to educate us. It seems that the only thing the mainstream media is peddling from PBO appearance at Univision is all about changing Washington from the outside. I always come here late because of my part-time work schedule, but I always make sure to read everything. Otherwise, I would be lost. I have consciously made a point of avoiding corporate (mainstream) media.

thinking about some of the recent writings by liberal librarian and others about the end of the republican party and the new era of politics, this little forum was such a good example of that i thought. it used to be that republican talking points, that have been baked into the public consciousness for decades by the media, could be trotted out like like they were at an event like this and it actually would hurt the democrats in general in polling and in tripping them up in their response. it often felt like you were powerless to stop the insanity since it was so pervasive.

now though, anyone who ever tries that nonsense ends up being the ones with egg on their face, just as these supposed moderators were today. the republican talking points now backfire on candidates who speak them and media people who try to push them!! this is a colossal change!! the is the new normal in the age of obama. he’s altered the world’s politics on so many levels is breathtaking. i’m so thankful to be alive to see this happen.

for all those generations who have fought these same forces we’re taking down today, each one of us must make sure every local democrat in your area gets elected. no exceptions. we can finish the work of generations over the next couple of months. forward!!!!

Very good observations. (And I’m not just saying that because you name-checked me.) The old playbook is not working. No amount of effort by the RW or the MSM can change that. A large part of that is due to having someone like Obama leading at this time. He was the right person in the right place at the right time. And Democrats are finally being remade in his image — strong, confident, unafraid to speak their values. The wimpy Dems who lost in 2010 were the last of the chaff; when we retake the House this November, we’ll have much stronger Dems in there.

not to mention social media that allows fact checking, push back, call out, and in your face real time corrections. PBO was genius in implementing and accepting the benefits of social media, while his opponents seem to fear it. Even now in Mit’s 2012 campaign, they fail to use it to its full advantage. Even McIDon’tKnwHowToType had an interactive campaign site. Mitt has no way for his folks, volunteers, or base to even leave a comment.

“we can finish the work of generations over the next couple of months. forward!!!!”

      Yes We Can

      Yes We Must

That is our moral obligation to all those who came before us and sacrificed, in many cases their life, to provide us our opportunity to write a new, more inclusive and more equitable chapter in the American story.

Well stated, 4more for 44. Your last injunction is difficult in a red county, but we’re doing our best. But you are absolutely right about the Republican talking points not working as they once did. People are beginning to see them for what they are–phony, setups designed to trip up Democrats. And Democrats have learned to walk taller, speak smarter and stay on message since PBO came into their lives.

If you can stomach it here is the Romney interview. You decide if they were as aggessive with Romney as they were with PBO.

Donna I could barely get through the first 10 minutes of this forum. It’s clear that Romney was treated with kids gloves, and he was also allowed to lie about President Obama’s inability to get Immigration reform done in his first year without being challenged to address the obstructionist congress. When they did challenge him, you could hear the hesitation in their voice…”well, er..with all due respect..er,.er”

Then I noticed that the audience was stacked with STRONG Romney supporters, because it seemed they clapped and cheered every 5 sentences regardless of what he said, and actually booed the moderator (loudly) when she tried to challenge him on his flip-flopping immigration stance. Why did Univision allow this in the first place? This was not an “Independent” crowd.

Exactly HF2! You lasted about as long as I did. Both Meta and I were watching and had to shut it down because it was just awful. Today those moderaters were the exact opposite with PBO. To me it was disgusting!

Mitt Romney at Boca Raton fundraiser:

“if the Hispanic voting bloc becomes as committed to the Democrats as the African American voting bloc has in the past, why we’re in trouble as a party and, I think, as a nation.”

Did the Univision moderators ask Romney about this statement? Because if they did I haven’t found any evidence of it.
