One of the things that really gets me is hearing people say things like, “I voted for Obama because I hoped he’d be able to unite the country, and he hasn’t, and I’m very disappointed by that.” ….. this is like blaming Sharon Tate for failing to make peace with Charles Manson. The Republicans operate from a mindset of wanting to crush and destroy the Democrats, and I bring this up today because the debate over the “freeloading” 47 percent is as good an exhibit as exists with which to make the case…..
….. it’s Obama’s fault that the tone in Washington hasn’t changed? It may have been idealistic and naive of him to promise it, but at least he tried, and I’ll take idealistic and naive over dishonest and cynical. It’s a sad thing to say, but the country will be united only when the liars and cynics see that their tactics no longer work.

Charles Blow: …. So I’m inclined to take Mitt Romney at his word when he disparages nearly half the country to a roomful of wealthy donors on a secretly recorded tape.
…. There is no amount of backtracking and truth bending that can make this right. It’s just wrong. It’s not just the patently false implication that half the country is parasitic. It’s not just the bleak view that they wallow in victimization. It is also his utter dismissal of this group: “my job is not to worry about those people.”
Those people? Those miserable peasants scrounging around the castle entrance? Those lay-abouts with mouths open for a spoonful of rich folks’ bounty? Those fate-forsaken unwashed with dirty hands outstretched for help unearned? Those ingrates who bring in a pittance but reap a premium?
Only a man who has never looked up from the pit of poverty could look down his nose with such scorn.

EJ Dionne: The most incisive reaction to Mitt Romney’s disparaging comments about 47 percent of us came from a conservative friend who e-mailed: “If I were you, I’d wonder why Romney hates America so much.”
A bit strong, perhaps. But the more you think about what Romney said, the more you wonder how he really feels about the country he wants to lead.
What kind of nation are we if nearly half of us are lazy, self-indulgent moochers who will never be persuaded to mend our ways? “I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives,” Romney said, thus writing off a huge share of our citizenry.
From his perch high atop the class structure, Romney offered an analysis of political motivations that even Marxists would regard as excessively materialistic. He speaks as if hardworking parents who seek government help to provide health care for their kids are irresponsible, that students who get government aid to attend community colleges are not trying to “care for their lives.” Has he never spoken with busboys and waitresses, hospital workers and janitors who make too little to pay income taxes but work their hearts out to “take personal responsibility”?

, and recognize that we are all looking at a forest we’ve never seen in the history of US elections.
…. Well, you have all witnessed the past 48+ hours, and what you have primarily witnessed is just how powerful YOU ARE, how powerful TWITTER is, and how powerful THE TRUTH always IS.
In that 48h, #47Percent has entered the consciousness of almost all, if not every, American (and millions of folk, globally).
In that 48h, you’ve seen every corporate #NEWSTAINER attempt to defy the laws of physics to spin #BainMitt’s ‘off the cuff’ seething disregard for way more than the #47Percent, because as you reflect on all his comments during that shindig, he actually trashed most of humanity.
In that 48h, you’ve also witnessed how quickly Issa was exposed for his witch hunt against AG Holder, McConnell, McCain et al were pilloried for their continued obstruction of jobs, made even more despicable because the legislative intent was to provide jobs to Veterans, and …. actually a rather long list.
So, a simple recommendation.
During the next 48 days, if you spend any time listening to a pundit, #NEWSTAINER, opposition candidate, whatever, do so with one intent – you’re going to pummel them with the TRUTH.
Otherwise, save the energy and channel it to phone banking, registering voters, driving folk to a voting place wherever early voting is available or provide them transportation and any other assistance they need on 6 Nov, etc.
Do not allow polls or any of those paid to distract, disrupt you in any way.
The only poll that matters is the tally of VOTES.
To anyone who attempts to distract, dish the TRUTH.

Democratic enthusiasm for this year’s presidential election has skyrocketed, with almost three-quarters of swing-state Democrats saying they are very excited to vote, according to a poll released Thursday.
Seventy-three percent of Democrats in swing states are excited to call their ballots, up from fifty-three percent in June, according to a Gallup poll. The numbers and spike are smaller for Republicans, with 64 percent saying they’re excited, an increase from 55 percent.

And aired a segment from Romney at a rally going on and on about the evils of the word “redistribution”, no equal time to an Obama appearance. Now they have “independent”—hahahaha—–Ed Gillespie on to comment who opened up with the deep thought that President Obama is the one who had a very bad week, cites Gallup poll. Some weak push back, but no basic truth or honesty on the Today Show once again.
Lauer just aired the 1998 Obama tape for the 2nd time—-no equal time to the Romney tape——and asks Gillespie “Why do you think this is so damaging to the Obama campaign?” Unbelievable, the manipulation.
That is just stomach-churning Dotster, utterly disgusting.

I saw the 1998 PBO tape and thought it was awesome. It shows PBO has not changed his values. Back then he wanted everyone to have a fair shot just like he does now. I loved it.
Agree—-I liked it too—-Obama same now as then, same values. It is just outrageous when I see certain segments try to make something good into something bad, like the health care act. I am always amazed that there are people who will believe that up is down.
We need to take down the negative connotations involved with the word redistribution. Relate it to how our taxes work and Social Security, Medicare, etc.
I didn’t get it that way at all. He played the tape as he should have cause Mitt’s out there referring to it as if it was something to be ashamed of. It wasn’t and I’m glad the public got to see it. It showed a very young Senator in 1998 addressing the state legislature about how tax money could be redistributed from the central/general funds to the agencies that would allow people to benefit more, rather than going to agencies where some people would not have access to the money. He said to give everyone a shot. Now that’s exactly what he’s saying 12 years later. It shows a steadfastness and conviction for what’s right. How else would the public see that? We shouldn’t be too hasty in our attempts to protect PBO. Media does serve a purpose and in this case, one that favors our team.
I saw the question to Gillespie as a challenge for him to explain how is it that Mitt would think the video is damaging. Which I think the public should also hear, because it isn’t damaging and Gillespie couldn’t make it so.
The 1998 tape is not getting traction. It’s too obviously an attempt to take the heat off of R for the 47% remarks. There’s just no red meat there for the press to tear into.
Plus, the Romney campaign is clearly sinking and the rats are starting to flee. When you lose Peggy Noonan, you’re in big trouble.

Another reason I was glad the teacher’s strike in chicago was settled: it would have gone into the unemployment numbers (but it wouldn’t affect the unemployment rate, due to the temporary nature). I guess there was a window and they settled before then.
Plus, existing home sales and new home sales climbed to their highest level since 2010. As the housing market improves, so does the economy. Also, department stores are beginning to hire thousands of workers for the upcoming holiday season to deal with the huge backlog that’s apparently beginning really early this year. The difference in this hiring is that the department stores said that many of these new jobs will be permanent jobs because consumer confidence is on the positive scale.
This is good news for the economy.
The Republicans are really lobbying the Today Show. I never see any Democrats on, just Republicans and their talking points.

I suspect someday we’ll hear a female presidential candidate or a Supreme Court Justice cite Michelle Obama as the reason they strove as hard as they did in their lives and followed their dreams. By being such a complete woman–warm, loving, a giving mother and spouse as well as a dynamic and brilliant professional, she’s shown every little girl in the world that they can be fully themselves and succeed. She will leave a big imprint on history, just as, in her own way, Eleanor Roosevelt did. There are very few people in the world who inspire you just by being. Barack Obama is one of them and so is his and our ‘Belle Michelle.’

Stewart reminded viewers that Romney’s campaign was supposed to undergo a reboot this week when the video was uncovered. Well, that didn’t last long. But as for Fox News’ coverage, Stewart said that the network’s “turd containment crews have been working overtime.”

Also note that Romney vowed to destroy the reform law and “replace it with” something new. Of course, that leads to the obvious question of what, exactly, the replacement policy would be, and how many families would lose out once the Republican kills the provisions that are already expanding coverage, lowering costs, and rescuing Americans from crushing bills.
But Romney won’t provide any details on what he’d “replace it with.” That’s apparently a secret — vote for him first, then he’ll tell Americans what he’ll do with health care system.
For that matter, even Romney’s boasts about Romneycare in Massachusetts struck an odd note. He’s right that the law has worked well and is quite popular with his former constituents, but if Romney’s proud of its success, why is he so eager to eliminate a comparable law that’s already in place at the national level?

I am coming out of lurking to ask Chips to put up the part of the video that Lawrence highlighted last night where Romney and his friends are laughing at Ann’s family for working two jobs etc to send her Dad to college. It ends with Romney saying that he will never do that for his brother. Capehart’s mouth was stuck open when he heard it. All Romney’s friends laughed in agreement.
I also find that the part of the tape where he talks about taking advantage of a crisis, giving the example with Carter where American lives were in danger, should also be highlighted.
We do not need to wait for the presidency to reveal Mitt’s character. Michelle was so correct about that statement.

WASHINGTON (AP) — On Mars, a partial eclipse of the sun isn’t quite as rare as on Earth. So NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover is snapping hundreds of pictures of the spectacle for the folks back home to ooh and aah over.
Two moons zip around the red planet and they’re closer and faster than our lumbering moon, so eclipses are more common. Scientists say there’s even somewhat of an eclipse season on Mars, and it’s that time of year when those Martian moons take turns taking bites of the sun.
Curiosity turned its cameras skyward to watch the action in three different eclipses, starting last week and continuing Wednesday, when a moon partially slipped between Mars and the sun.
The rover has been beaming back a stream of photos of the Martian landscape since landing near the equator last month.

Obama in Tampa on Thursday for $20,000-a-person fundraiser

President Obama will be in Tampa tonight for a private fundraiser at a home in South Tampa.
The party is being described as a “small, intimate event” with about 50 people. Tickets were going for $20,000 each.
On Wednesday, a party tent was visible in the backyard and trucks were dropping off supplies at the house all day.
Neighbors said they are expecting a lot of activity.
“I think it will be a little bit crazy,” said John Skemp. “I don’t think it will be like we saw at the convention but it will be neat to see Secret Service out here and hopefully the motorcade comes strolling along.”
There will be a special performance by Eddie Vedder, lead singer of the group Pearl Jam and the menu is being prepared by Chef Tyler Florence of The Food Network.
Thursday’s event is expected to be the last private fundraiser the President attends in this area before the election but the campaign says more public campaign events are likely.
President Obama’s schedule has him in Tampa for about 2.5 hours Thursday night.

Dobn’t know where you are Pamela, but in Chicago suburbs it is around 4.19-4.29, but just a week ago it was 4.39. It is always interesting that the same day oil goes up gas prices go up, but it takes longer for gas to go down afetr oil goes down. Most of thsi drop was yesterady and today, so by beginning of next week I expect to see a drop at the pump.
Shouldn’t we see even a bigger drop in Chicago because of the regulations at the refineries in place for spring consumption? At least that’s what we’re told when gas spikes in Apr/May.

Okay just watched the Lawrence video ~ good on him.. because there is little doubt- to me at least- that the nastiness directed at Eric Holder has always been about race. Although I would have liked very much for Lawrence to speak about the FACT that Eric Holder is NOT corrupt- how that is just one more bogus boogeyman charge brought on by lying repubs.
A couple of other things about these tapes.. maybe I missed this, but has any pundit discussed the other lies: “President Obama is corrupt” right out of the mouths of at least one man in that room AND out of the mouth of Romney- has Romney been asked to explain just HOW President Obama is “corrupt”????? And then theres the fact that when Romney is talking about the 47%… he is talking about them (us) as the 47% who voted for President Obama.. I’ve noticed the punditry is lumping those who voted for POTUS as the 47% who don’t pay taxes.. in essence agreeing w/ Romney wherein that is total BS. The percentage of folks who voted for POTUS is higher than 47% AND many folks who are poor or living on fixed incomes… voted for both Obama & McCain.. so it may be a technicality.. but the fact remains that in his own words Romney is speaking about the Half+ Americans in this country who VOTED FOR Pres Obama.
Hi sherijr, Lawrence did in fact speak in detail about Eric Holder’s squeaky clean background. He spoke of Eric Holder’s positions held from the time he left Law School and how he was even appointed by Saint Ronnie (gasp!!!). He also contrasted Holder’s explemplary background with that of Nixon’s corrupt Attorneys General and highlighted the dishonesty of the comments made by the Rethug in the video. That’s how he led up to his conclusion that the GOP’s bogus accusations against Holder were nothing more than “Attorney General while Black” charges.
I heard him speak of Nixon’s two corrupt AG’s & how Reagan appointed Holder the judgeship.. but missed anything about how ‘exemplary’ Holder has been, will listen to the video again. thank you HF.
Of course he didn’t use the term “exemplary” – but he implied as much when he gave the details of Holder’s academic background (from undergraduate through Law School), and the positions he’s held before being appointed in Obama’s cabinet. By giving all this detail he basically implied that there was absolutely nothing “corrupt” about Eric Holder.
Hopefruit, I just feel he could have clearly stated that no corruption exists.. it would have been easy and true. Thats all I’m suggesting.
Yes, he certainly could – I agree with you on that. But I’m willing to cut him some slack here because he’s the first cable news pundit who has openly and strongly called out the GOP for their unfair targeting of the Attorney General, and he has directly pointed to Holder’s race as being the reason for this targeting.

Good Thursday Y’all…..I’m just going to have to return to lurk mode and enjoy all that y’all have to say and post. This past two weeks of a roller coaster ride have just left me speechless…from the highs of hope, joy, and love that the convention provided, to the lows of being appalled, disgusted, and stunned by Romneyland has basically left me inarticulate….I don’t have anything else to add except to say that although the polls look very positive they scare me to death b/c I just don’t want the base to become complacent…The R base will not be complacent b/c they are motivated by HATE….how any woman and any man who loves and respects women could vote for any Republican is beyond my comprehension…………………………………………..p
I think that for the first time since 2008, Dems are more fired up to vote than ever before! The RW has stated what they really think…it is NOT what America is….and people of all stripes are waking to the fact that this is a game changer. There are rumblings on RWNJ sites of anger at not being able to contact the Robme campaign via email or telephone. There is no way to make comments to the campaign from their blog site. They are realizing that they are also the ‘you people’. They are really upset at being included in the 47% with the lazy, welfare slackers, cause they may use gubmint handouts, it’s not because they want to. It’s dawning on them that the guy they didn’t like in the first place is totally insulting them. They haven’t realized that they wouldn’t let him track to the middle which has caused these unforced errors. Mitt had in centrist messages memorized and couldn’t use them.
Exactly! Maybe they will come full circle and realize that the guy they have been TOLD to hate, is the one that is REALLY on their side!
