Frankly the more the merrier VC! Thanks for posting his tweet here so I could respond back to him. I like the strong cohesive front the Dems have now adopted since the DNC. And imho, “attaboys” from those of us “outside Washington” showing support for them is important and hopefully encourages them to stay strong and keep fighting for the American people. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but we not only need PBO and VP Biden back in the WH, we need to “clean house” and vote as many of the Repugs ba@#$%#@ out both the House and Senate as possible. #RememberInNovember

What a great response to the question ask of POTUS about Romney 47% statement. I loved the part where POTUS said are their people who abuse the system? Yes they are, at the bottom and at the top, because there are a whole lot of millionaires who aren’t paying taxes either. What a answer. A slap in Mitt Romney’s lying face.

Okay, CookeM, since you ask nicely…. Ahem… ahem

1st. I think seriously about my intended greeting. (Being at the top at TODville is quite a responsibility, you know.)
2nd I prepare it carefully, by writing it out so that I can check for spelling, …..of course. ;)
3rd I copy the greeting ………so that I can share it easily
4th (the most difficult part) I focus on the door***, trying hard to ignore all distractions, so that I can share my greeting as soon as the door is opened. [Oh, did I mention that the door starts creaking open on Twitter? At least it does for me because I don't have an ipad/iphone]
5th I paste my greetings on the notice board quickly and wait to see what happens.

Good luck! I’ve been thinking of retiring from the race myself, but every time I decide for sure the urge later returns .

WARNING: *** Sometimes Chips makes the task more difficult by changing the decoration on the door without advance warning, or by opening the door only wide enough to stick a note/picture out herself but not wide enough for entry. When that happens you can usually hear her chuckling inside. Also, lately, she has started to include red herrings, so you try to open the door only to realize it’s just a faux-door, not the real one! Haven’t figured out yet what that’s all about, except to increase her level of fun while torturing the likes of good folk like me.

good morning chips and tods! headline at the princeton election consortium:

REPUBLICANS AT RISK OF LOSING THE HOUSE?

‘ Conditions through August showed a 2% lead on the generic Congressional ballot for Democrats. As of September 20th, in the wake of the Democratic convention, the lead has widened to 4.0 +/- 2.0%. Although it has yet to be appreciated by pundits, this could well translate to a November loss of the House of Representatives by Republicans. Based on the generic Congressional ballot, the probability of a Democratic takeover is 74% with a median 16-seat majority. ‘

    http://election.princeton.edu/2012/09/20/house-outlook-for-2013-take-2/#more-5616

yes, if the election was today, they give the dems a 74% chance of taking the house with a 16 seat majority. this is happy morning news for me!

Romney stacked his Univision audience with some loud belligerent “supporters” who rudely booed the moderator’s questions that they didn’t like. Obama’s audience was respectful and spent more time LISTENING to this thoughtful, detailed responses, as opposed to cheering and whistling as though he was giving a stump speech.

I think that alone intimidated the moderators some (apart from their own corporate interests). The moderators failed to call Romney out on his lies (and he did a LOT of that), and simply let him carry on with his standard canned talking points.

    • 45 pkayden
      September 20, 2012 at 5:19 pm

I noticed one of the women behind him mouthed “Keep Figting” to him after his speech, which I thought was strange. Thanks for the information about the stacking. That’s exactly what Romney did at the NAACP speech — flew Black supporters in from other states to stack the audience. This man is such a fake.

    • 46 theo67
      September 20, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Yeah – the minute the audience started wildly applauding Willard stating that the “business language of the US is English”, I knew the crowd was stacked. That’s the only snippet I saw, because I can’t take listening to his lies and strange, breathless voice.

This guy has multiple personality disorder.
    That is all!

    • September 20, 2012 at 4:40 pm

Jonathan is just mad that he did not uncover the 47% video. The redistribution tape is not on the same scale. The President clearly said that he wants “everyone” to have a chance and a way up. It is no wash and only an idiot would think so. Besides PBO said that in 1998, not when he was running for President, but even if he had, there is nothing wrong with what he said.

Huff Post has an article saying that Romney is strapped for cash that is why he is not having rallies and POTUS is beating him in advertising in swing states. All those months of boasting that they beat us in fund raising, the money was for other committees and not much for Romney himself. What frauds! LOL

    • 69 theo67
      September 20, 2012 at 5:25 pm

Yes, I think I heard on NPR last night that Romney’s people were kind of misrepresenting the numbers – that’s why he’s having to do so much fundraising. He is actually well behind the President in fundraising. And yet, he wants the country to vote for him because he’s an expert at money management? He actually believed what he heard on Fox News, clearly, and built his campaign around some imaginary version of President Obama, instead of the real person. Just like his RNC convention was built around a lie. Dangerous. He should have watched the Baltimore Massacre (aka GOP congressional retreat). His fellow right wingers made the same mistake…

Thank you. That’s exactly the feeling I got. Klein is being damn slick here. He posts a seemingly innocuous tweet but which really is a mockery of the President’s words. And if you read the rest of Klein’s tweets on this very issue, you will see why I hold the opinion that this tweet was not intended to be flattering or supportive of the President’s words.

Here’s an example of Klein’s thoughts on this issue:

I also know that the main-stream-media (including the likes of Klein) have always been of the opinion that PBO promised to change Washington but only made it more divisive.

  23. September 20, 2012 at 4:22 pm

QUESTIONER: There’s 46, 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay federal taxes [indistinct] How can these people vote on spending money when it’s not their money? What would you do about something like that?

ROMNEY: You raise a really good question, I think. I would think that every American would like to feel that they’re contributing to the defense of our country. And this is something worth having a discussion about. I don’t have an answer, because I don’t want to raise taxes on people that are not paying taxes today – in many cases, are poor. But 47 percent is a big number. Forty-seven percent of Americans paying no income tax, that’s a heck of a big number. And that’s why some have talked about going to what’s called the Fair Tax, which is a tax on consumption, and everybody consumes. But there’s some problems with the way people have constructed that, because very high-income people end up seeing a huge reduction in taxes, and that’s not what I’m looking for, and middle-income people see higher taxes. So you look for a way to say, let’s everybody contribute. And I will look – I’ll look very carefully at that, because I think every American deserves the privilege of being able to help support our troops and support our nation in defending liberty.

And how exactly to do that, I’ll give that some thought. Let me tell you what I’d do with taxes, by the way, that may influence your thinking. And that is, I think the people who have been hurt most by the Obama economy are the middle-income Americans. People at the low end receive some help and benefits, a safety net. People at the high end are doing just very well, thank you very much. And people in the middle, the great majority of Americans are having a real hard time, and so what I would do to help middle-income Americans is say, for anyone making $200,000 a year and less, you pay no tax on interest, dividends or capital gains, no tax on your savings. So middle-income Americans can save for college, can save for retirement, can save for whatever the heck they want and not have to pay taxes on their savings.

    -/
Fair Tax system is really unfair!!!

    • 85 theo67
      September 20, 2012 at 5:42 pm

Eliminating taxes on capital gains, dividends interest are the purview of the rich more than the middle class – so he’s deceiving the public about this. He himself has survived for the last ten years on capital gains alone – since he’s not had a job for a decade.

The “Obama economy”? I think he means the Bush economy, because the Obama Economy is the one that’s actually climbing out of recession, despite GOP attempts to keep it in the ditch.

Lastly, a lot of that 47% are seniors who no longer work, but who paid taxes and contributed to the very social services that they now enjoy and rely upon. Another lot are the soldiers who have now been told that giving them jobs after they return from the GOP wars is too expensive – need to keep that money so the rich can get more tax cuts.

And really lastly – he ants to give every American the “privilege of being able to help support our troops and support our nation”. Is he bringing his money back from overseas so he can help carry that load and pay his fair share?

      He’s disgusting.

Mitt Romney, rallying supporters in Sarasota today, is wasting no time in seizing on President Obama’s comment to Univision about changing Washington.

“The president threw in the white flag of surrender,” Romney bellowed soon after taking the stage at a steamy outdoor rally.  “He said he can’t change Washington from the inside.   We’re going to give him that chance in November, he’s going outside.”

Romney was alluding to Obama’s eyebrow-raising concession that “you can’t change Washington from the inside” just about an hour earlier at the Univsion forum in Miami.

“I can change Washington,” Romney promised.   “I will change Washington.   I will get the job done from the inside.”

    -/
Now see? They jump on stuff hoping to change the subject. Then, the RNC fires out this email saying the President gaffed!

We have to nip this in the bud quick coz I’m starting to see a few people pick this up. And apparently, the Romney campaign is saying they will be using this against Obama in the upcoming weeks.
They are so stupid!!! POTUS has been saying for YEARS that ” We are the ones we’ve been waiting for”. The change has always been about US, not just one man. C’mon, the media is now just jumping on anything. You can’t just pick up a phrase and decide randomely that it’s a gaffe.
Seems like Team Obama is on the case too because they’ve been retweeting a lot of the statements from POTUS dating back to ’08 saying the exact same thing. Let’s make sure we push back heavily as well , for those who are on twitter…

Mitt Romney at Boca Raton fundraiser:

“if the Hispanic voting bloc becomes as committed to the Democrats as the African American voting bloc has in the past, why we’re in trouble as a party and, I think, as a nation.”

‘ In one the weirdest (and most effective) political ads of the season, nearly the entire cast of The West Wing has reunited to shoot a campaign ad — in character — for a candidate for Michigan’s Supreme Court. The whole gang is here — Josh, Toby, President Bartlett, even C.J. and the quiet secretary — walking and talking in that old Aaron Sorkin style to discuss the complicated “crisis” of people not voting on non-partisan judicial ballots. Along the way, they manage to work in an endorsement for Bridget Mary McCormack, a University of Michigan law professor who is appearing on the (you guessed it) non-partisan portion of the Michigan ballot. ‘

Problem we have is that the Village is completely in love with the concept of a horse race, so they will help Romney to get back in the game, in any way possible. It’s not necessarily bias, it’s just because a close race is more exciting. They crave for that kind of thing.

President Obama obviously meant what he’s always meant: it’s the people who apply pressure who can obtain real change. God, he must be absolutely mortified right now to have given the GOP and the media an opening like this. Time for the Obama campaign and all supporters to bring their A-game and turn this around ASAP.

“God, he must be absolutely mortified right now to have given the GOP and the media an opening like this”

What exactly are you referring to here?

Don’t you realize by now that the MSM will take just about ANY and EVERYTHING the president said or does and try to make an issue out of it? They tried to bring back the “guns & religion” comments after the Romney video was leaked. They tried to use the unrest in Libya and make and “issue” out PBO’s comments about being neither an enemy or ally of Egypt. They tried to pretend that he had not part in the convention bounce and that it was all because of Bill Clinton. They tried to use the jobs numbers to say that the unemployment situation had completely wiped out any enthusiasm generated by the convention. Between now and November, there will be MANY things the President will say, and yes some of them will be used in the MSM in an attempt to distract from Mitt Romney and confuse voters.

I would say it’s time for YOU to stop buying into whatever nonsense the MSM/GOP pushes about the President and instead call out the MEDIA on their double standards, giving Romney a pass, and trying to confuse viewers for ratings.

    • 144 EricFive
      September 20, 2012 at 5:31 pm

Because the MSM lacks common sense, we don’t have to lose our common sense and become afraid or panicked by their latest nonsense. PBO was basically saying that it is the voters who change how Washington works (i.e., the President cannot change how the House of Reps or Senate works, they are separate branches of government). Few would argue with the fact that COngress is dysfunctional. The only way to change Congress is if voters kick the obstructing bums out of office. This was not a gaffe. It is how our system of governmet works, the President is not king.

‘August: Romney campaign spent $17 million more than they took in.’

      http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021311974

It gets worse. Of the $100 million raised, Romney only gets to spend $22 million of it. That’s why he’s being so miserly about ad expenditures in key battleground states that he must win.

      New York Times:

“Romney aides released informal dollar figures that lumped several pools of money — some available for his use, others not — into a single figure, providing a perception greater than reality: $106 million in June and $101 million in July, far more than Mr. Obama and the Democrats.

Yet those figures obscured the fact that most of the money Mr. Romney was raising was reserved for those other political entities like the Republican National Committee.

And the party committee, which Mr. Romney helped propel to record-breaking receipts in July, is allowed to spend only about $22 million on advertising that is coordinated with Mr. Romney.”

ROMNEY USES COAL MINERS IN AD – ATTENDANCE AT EVENT WAS MANDATORY AND UNPAID

Romney ad features miners forced to lose pay during mandatory attendance at Romney event

    By Laura Klauson

    —————————-

Mitt Romney must have really liked his campaign event using coal miners as a backdrop after their employer, Murray Energy, made attendance mandatory and unpaid, though they lost paid work time to attend. Romney liked it so much, in fact, that his new ad attacking President Barack Obama for supposedly being anti-coal uses images of Romney standing in front of those miners as they lose pay to be forced to listen to him.

The substance of the ad is ridiculous, of course

Since events have FORCED most of the MSM to report harsh truths about Mitt, they will leap over themselves at some perceived or invented “gaffe” by PBO in order to provide “balance” and get back to their specialty: finding fault with PBO. If this is the best they can come up with, Mitt is in some serious trouble. As stated above, this was NOT a gaffe. PBO was talking to voters about the power they have to change this country. The voters, through elections, have direct control over two branches of government, the Executive (President) and the Legislature (both houses of Congress). Most would agree that much of the dysfunction in Washington stems from Congress, and the remedy for that ill is for voters to kick out the GOP come Nov. 2012. The fact that Mitt himself has made similar statements in the past make this a TOTAL FAIL by the GOP and their MSM cronies.

The Tax Policy Center – federal income taxes paid by income level in 2011.

It contains a number of interesting factoids, including the following:

7,000 people made more than $1 million but paid no income tax.

22,000 people made between $500,000 and $1 million but paid no income tax.

81,000 people made between $200,000 and $500,000 but paid no income tax.

381,000 people made between $100,000 and $200,000 but paid no income tax.

So that’s 491,000 Americans who made more than $100,000 a year who paid no income tax

    Also:

45% of the country makes less than $30,000 per year.
30% of the country makes less than $20,000 per year.
15% of the country makes less than $10,000 per year.

    Also:

60 million of the 76 million Americans who pay no income tax make $30,000 or less.

    Also:

25 million Americans make more than $100,000 per year—15% of the total.
6.7 million Americans make more than $200,000 per year—4% of the total.
1.3 million Americans make more than $500,000 per year—less than 1% of the total.
433,000 Americans make more than $1 million per year—less than 0.2% of the total.

OUR POLITICAL DISCOURSE IS GETTING DUMBER AS THE ELECTION DRAWS CLOSER

Obama talks about how Washington changes

    By Steve Benen

    —————————————

Update: As part of his answer, which the RNC left out of the video, Obama talked about doing more in a second term to engaged in “more of a conversation with the American people so they can move these issues forward.” This context makes the so-called “gaffe” even less controversial and more mundane.

Here’s a transcript of Obama’s next sentences, not shown in the clip: “That’s how I got elected, and that’s how the big accomplishments like health care got done, was because we mobilized the American people to speak out. That’s how we were able to cut taxes for middle class families. So something that I’d really like to concentrate on in my second term is being in a much more constant conversation with the American people so that they can put pressure on Congress to help move some of these issues forward.” This isn’t at odds with the 2008 message; it’s the whole point behind “yes we can.”

Second Update: Romney mentioned Obama’s remarks three times at the beginning of his rally in Sarasota. It’s almost as if our political discourse is getting dumber as the election draws closer.

    Chips, for you: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/us-election/9483845/US-election-Mitt-Romney-may-have-breached-ethics-laws-through-company-linked-to-Paul-Ryans-brother.html

“The Republican presidential candidate appears to have profited from a marketing company that was contracted by the state of Massachusetts after receiving $5 million (£3.2 million) in financial backing from Bain Capital, Mr Romney’s investment firm.
One of his vice-presidential candidate’s brothers, who is a former Bain consultant, was at the time of the investment a senior executive at the marketing company, Imagitas, which was co-founded by another former Bain executive.
Both Mr Romney and Tobin Ryan, who omits his work at Imagitas from his corporate biography, also apparently stood to benefit from the $230 million (£146 million) sale of the company in 2005, while Mr Romney remained in office.”

We always knew there were a lot of unanswered questions about Romney/Bain/politics relationship.

Fox News goes after PBO yesterday on various shows for finding time to sit with a pirate on ‘talk like a pirate day’, while denying access to Baby Nityahoo. Later they tweeted that they didn’t realize the pic was from a spoof that PBO delivered at the WH correspondence dinner in 2009.

Ok folks, I’m going to put on my librarian’s hat and recommend a book to you. It’s titled An Optimist’s Tour of the Future: One Curious Man Sets Out to Answer ‘What’s Next?’ It’s written by Mark Stevenson. With visionary leadership (*cough*Obama*cough*), the technology is in the pipeline to solve a lot of the problems which bedevil us. We may make it as an enlightened species after all. I’m about half way through the book, and it’s blowing my mine.

I especially want our very own Ralph Cercchione to read it and give his thoughts. (Although, he probably already HAS read it.)

Consider this a book talk from your friendly virtual librarian.

    • September 20, 2012 at 7:03 pm

LL, even though my book shelf is now heaving with 9,362 books I bought but still have to read ….. I’m off to Amazon right now. Thank you for the recommendation!

      • September 20, 2012 at 7:09 pm

Right now I just finished reading about CO2 scrubbers. The next section—which made me think of Ralph—is about bacteria which sucks CO2 out of the atmosphere and excretes diesel and ethanol fuels. I’m upbeat by nature, but this is sending me into overdrive.

OMG. I got a ticket at the last minute. The Univision event will air again at 10PM tonight. Please watch. OMG, the President was excellent. I saw David Axelrod and jay Carney. Jay had on a red tie. He is quite tall and is quite attractive. The President was about 18feet away from me. I have met him before, shook his hand to be exact. But, I got a chance to really check him out and PBO is one fine specimen of a man. His suit, fit him to a T. The pants, the way the back was tailored to meet his form. OMG, it was unbelievable. He is very tall and slender. I wouldn’t describe him as skinny although that is how he describes himself. The male moderator said something about the dream act and how the president promised. PBO straightened him out real quick. I was worried about the upcoming debates but let me reassure you and myself, that PBO will knock it out the park. In hind sight, he was naive to think the republicans would work with him but he got as much done and humanly possible. Also, he mentioned how they were plotting against him on day 1. Oh, man, he knocked it out of the park!!!

Scott Brown begins the debate by attacking Warren’s character and saying that she’s lying Native American ancestry. He insists that she should release her records of job applications, etc. Warren says she never used her ancestry to get jobs or to get ahead and everyone who has hired her knows that.

TAMPA — President Obama continued his offensive against Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” video, telling a crowd at a high-dollar fundraiser here that he wants the children of all people to be successful.

Speaking to an audience that included former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and Pearl Jam rocker Eddie Vedder, Obama said the children of the wealthy should not believe that they are the sole inheritors of America’s success.

“I don’t want their dreams constricted, and I also don’t want our kids to think that somehow success is reserved for them and that somehow half the country is locked out of that success,” Obama said. “I want everybody to be successful. Black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, able or disabled and I want everybody to have a chance to success. That’s what we’re fighting for in this election.”

Like Hansel and Gretel leaving a trail of crumbs, Obama has doled out pieces of his criticism of statements Romney made in the videos, recorded at a May fundraiser, that were released Monday and Tuesday by Mother Jones magazine.

Obama made his first reference to Romney’s comments Tuesday night to David Letterman and again spoke of them during Thursday’s Univision forum at the University of Miami.

Vedder, the Pearl Jam rocker who played an acoustic set for the crowd before introducing Obama, joined in taking a jab at Romney’s “47 percent” remark.

“I’m an example of someone who never made it to university,” Vedder said. “I did have this dream to be a musician. I felt that this dream had an expiration date.”

Vedder told of working as a security guard in order to subsidize his fledgling music career.

“It was that job which he allowed me to keep affording to guitars and microphones,” he said. “For me, it all began with that ability to get the proper training for a decent job.”

Vedder added: “It’s very upsetting to hear a presidential candidate be so easily dismissive of such a ginormous amount of the population.”

Holy Smokes! Elizabeth Warren creamed Scott Brown in the debates. He kept calling her “Professor” in a condescending manner. His behavior was boorish and rude. He thought he could intimidate her and make her nervous. HA! The joke was on him. She mopped the floor with him. He was so flustered, he was stuttering. Whenever he couldn’t defend his votes he’d say “umm…..I’ll get back to you on that.” Warren was relentless. She knew his voting record like the back of her hand. Brown got desperate and began name dropping Teddy Kennedy and Pres. Obama. He name dropped Pres. Obama so much you’d think they were best friends. It was such a classic sign of desperation.

Warren is a dynamo in debate form. MA voters need to wake up and vote Scott Brown out. He voted for the Blunt Amendment and voted against Equal Pay yet he said he is pro-women. Warren quickly disabused him of that delusional notion.

Did she bring up the recent thugs’ unity in voting against the vets jobs act ?

      • September 20, 2012 at 8:16 pm

That’s one where she would need to be careful because Brown didn’t vote with the Senate GOP – because he knew that even with his ‘independent’ vote the Dems still wouldn’t have sufficient votes to break the filibuster. I’m sure if it did come up, she handled it well.

The thing is, Brown voted for that particular bill (he knew it would be poison to vote against it going into the debates and his GOP friends gave him cover), but he has voted against other important jobs bills and voted for BAD bills like the Blunt Amendment and bills to keep subsidies for oil companies and loopholes to protect billionaires.

Hi, TOD! I haven’t posted here for a very long time, but I just wanted to say that I was at PBO’s event at the University of Miami today. If you look at the clip of PBO responding to Romney’s 47% remarks, I appear at the 1:00 mark. Thats besides, the point, I’m just psyched I came out on the tape ;) My point is that PBO did really well today (I had no doubt he would). He answered eloquently, precisely, and honestly. The energy in the room was palpable (even if it doesn’t come across on the video) and the chanting afterward was intense. There is a lot of love for PBO in Miami and we hope to spread it across the rest of the state. Rock the vote!!! OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
