Washington Post: The last of the 33,000 “surge” troops President Obama ordered to Afghanistan in December 2009 have left the country, the Pentagon announced Friday, just ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline.

The number of U.S. troops in the war zone now stands at 68,000, Secretary of State Leon E. Panetta told reporters traveling with him during a week-long visit to the Asia-Pacific region. The troop count is down from a peak of 101,000 U.S. forces last year and marks the end of a critical phase in Obama’s war strategy.

…. The drawdown of U.S. forces is in keeping with Obama’s timetable to pull out all conventional combat forces by the end of 2014…

USA Today: Medicare beneficiaries have saved a total of about $4.5 billion on prescription medications because of the 2010 health care law since January 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services plans to announce today.

“We’re seeing consistent, steady savings for seniors thanks to the health care law,” said Jon Blum, director of the Center for Medicare. “In just 21/2 half years, seniors have seen billions in savings, and those savings will continue to grow as the doughnut hole is fully closed.”

Washington Post: In 3 1/2 years in office, President Obama has set in motion a broad overhaul of public education from kindergarten through high school, largely bypassing Congress and inducing states to adopt landmark changes that none of his predecessors attempted.

He awarded billions of dollars in stimulus funding to states that agreed to promote charter schools, use student test scores to evaluate teachers and embrace other administration-backed policies. And he has effectively rewritten No Child Left Behind, the federal law passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush, by excusing states from its requirements if they adopt his measures.

Paul Krugman: By now everyone knows how Mitt Romney washed his hands of almost half the country …. But here’s the question: Should we imagine that Mr. Romney and his party would think better of the 47 percent on learning that the great majority of them actually are or were hard workers, who very much have taken personal responsibility for their lives? And the answer is no.

For the fact is that the modern Republican Party just doesn’t have much respect for people who work for other people, no matter how faithfully and well they do their jobs. All the party’s affection is reserved for “job creators,” aka employers and investors. Leading figures in the party find it hard even to pretend to have any regard for ordinary working families….

Am I exaggerating? Consider the Twitter message sent out by Eric Cantor on Labor Day ….. “Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.” Yes, on a day set aside to honor workers, all Mr. Cantor could bring himself to do was praise their bosses.

….. what people are now calling the Boca Moment wasn’t some trivial gaffe. It was a window into the true attitudes of what has become a party of the wealthy, by the wealthy, and for the wealthy, a party that considers the rest of us unworthy of even a pretense of respect.

The Guardian: The Australian treasurer, Wayne Swan, in an unusually blunt criticism of US politics weeks before the presidential election, said “cranks and crazies” had taken over the Republicans and posed the biggest threat to the world’s largest economy.

Swan, one of few world leaders able to boast his country had avoided recession during the global financial crisis, also labelled the Tea Party wing of the Republicans as “extreme”.

“Let’s be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world’s biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over the Republican party,” Swan said in a speech to a conference in Sydney.

Michael Tomasky: …. Did you see the way Mittens and the GOP chopped that Obama “redistribution” tape? Somehow, they left out the part where Obama, back in 1998, said:

“How do we pool resources at the same time as we decentralize delivery systems in ways that both foster competition, can work in the marketplace, and can foster innovation at the local level and can be tailored to particular communities.”

Competition, marketplace, innovation… all obvious socialistic buzzwords, of course….

Charles P. Pierce: …. He gets beaten like a drum for dismissing half the country he’s allegedly asking to vote for him – including the old, the lame, the blind, the crippled, and everyone who got that way during a war ……. So, when some enterprising citizen journalists dig up and barber a 14-year-old quote from the president, Willard not only makes it his own, but he attaches it to a previously barbered quote that he and his party played with like dogs with a rubber bone throughout what is reckoned to be the most utterly truthless political convention of the modern era. And he does so full in the hope that the national media by and large will declare two-tie, all-tie, thereby getting him past the fact that he sounded like Scrooge before the spirits came to call…..

…. “Redistribution” is a magic word that transforms Your government benefits into something to be protected from Those People who want to take them from you. It turns Your Medicare into Their welfare check and, therefore, they mooch while you earn. Moreover, it can fashion a candidate’s rampant plutocratic buffoonery into a simple political debate. Abracarafalca!

Mediaite: Saturday Night Live aired a special edition of Weekend Update tonight, opening with a spoof of the cable morning show Fox & Friends …. The segment started with the hosts wryly dismissing the impact of Mitt Romney‘s “47 percent” video, before cutting to Jason Sudeikis as Romney explaining his comment in full. Romney said that within that 47 percent, he’s not actually talking about senior citizens or veterans or southern white people. “When I say ‘these people,’ I mean ‘black people.’”

…. there was yet another Romney video to show off … he laughs off 25 dollars as “a quarter” and laughingly refers to California as “New Mexico.” But the Fox hosts found absolutely nothing wrong with Romney’s comments, finding each of them to be equally delightful, including a surprise video at the end of Romney singing in the shower about how much poor people hate jobs.

This is freaking hilarious. So much for fiscal responsibility.

Romney awarded bonuses to top aides

Mitt Romney’s campaign took out a $20 million loan in August and ended the month with $38 million less in the bank than President Barack Obama.
At the same time, the campaign gave out about $200,000 in bonuses to senior employees just after the Republican National Convention, which ended with the candidate not getting much of a bounce in the polls.

The beneficiaries included national political director Richard Beeson, campaign manager Matt Rhoades, general counsel Kathryn Biber, policy adviser Lanhee Chen, communications director Gail Gitcho, digital director Zach Moffatt and adviser Gabriel Schoenfeld, according to federal campaign finance reports filed Thursday. The Washington Post first reported the bonuses.
According to the Post, Beeson received a $37,500 bonus on top of his monthly salary of $13,750. Rhoades, Chen and Gitcho received $25,000 each.

Morning everyone!! Thank the heavens its Friday!!
Anyway, I watched part of Morning Joe this morning and it was quite amazing to see them try to find anything, * anything!*, that could be considered a silver lining in Mitt Romney’s disastrous 4 weeks. I mean, every indicator just is going against him, swing States polls, POTUS is pulling ahead, Repubs chatter class is calling his campaign “a rolling calamity” lmao, and now it turns out they might not be pulling in as much money as previously thought. Haha God bless those hosts they tried ( how about that inside change comment? Oh wait, Romney said the exact same thing; what about M-E? Shoot Romney just blew it with Libya thing..) They were seriously grasping at straws, it was funny. And even they themselves admitted its not much fun if its not a horse race ( ratings!)..

Yeah, they keep bringing up the debates, as if Mittens has an iceberg’s chance in hell of beating President Obama in a debate. But what is truly amazing in this entire episode is the fact that the Republicans had four years to come up with a candidate that could be President Obama. Even if you say that Barack Obama caught the Republicans by surprise in 2008, that still doesn’t negate the fact that four years later they still haven’t come up with an answer.

      • 50 hopefruit2
        September 21, 2012 at 8:49 am

The media lulled the GOP into a false sense of security with their ridiculous and biased anti-Obama reporting. They kept saying that 2012 would look more like 2010 than 2008. They also said that “anyone” could beat Obama because people were disappointed, unemployed, frustrated, you name it. They kept saying that Dems were not as enthusiastic as Repubs and therefore would stay home. They kept saying that Obama’s grassroots team were not donating or volunteering as much as they did in 2008 and that every group was abandoning him. None of this was true – even when they were saying it.

The smarter Republicans realized that the MSM’s reporting was bogus which is why they decided to sit out the 2012 election. Romney felt he could run because he was white and that was sufficient to win. Obama has not only matched the 2008 in terms of enthusiasm, donation, ground-game etc., he has exceeded it. The ads are sharper, timelier, more effective. The ground game is more extensive. The donations are flowing in. People are more tuned in than ever, and the MSM and their boy Willard are left spinning….

I hate reading the GOP pundits who keep saying about Mitt “In a year that was his to win …”. It has never been the election for the GOP to win – the absolute lack of a decent candidate has made that screamingly obvious. No-one who may have had a chance wanted to campaign against the President.

But don’t you think that the bored media has an incentive to declare Romney the winner of the debates? They want a horse race. They don’t want to have to report that President Obama is going to win easily. That would be too dry for them and wouldn’t sell papers.

Good Morning all. I am off today and boy do I chores but, I wanted to give you a little insight into what is going on in Florida. I have been turning in Voter Registration forms daily. I went yesterday to take a co worker to get her ID then walked her over to the Board of Elections office to re-register due to address change. Usually I walk in and there is only 2 people there. One putting in data from the forms turned in and one at the desk taking them in. Yesterday there were 6! Two at the desk and 4 doing data entry. You can see the new forms next to each person and the screen they are using to put them in. By the way, I had to wait in line to turn mine in.

When you register voters in FL…you have to be impartial. I have turned in 2 republican and 1 independent voter form..all others circled the Democratic Party. I could tell the two in front of me were from the OFA office down the street. Even the people in line smiled at me and I smiled back. The ladies behind the counter know me as I have been doing this since the law was enacted in 2010. The first time I went in they asked me if I was with OFA. I phone back for them but do my registration on my own. I have my own certificate. When I take a form from someone…I want them to know that they are guaranteed a voice in that election. I turn them in that day.

Heartland Monitor Poll: Obama Leads 50 Percent to 43 Percent

// President Obama has opened a solid lead over Mitt Romney by largely reassembling the “coalition of the ascendant” that powered the Democrat to his landmark 2008 victory, the latest Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor Poll has found. The survey found Obama leading Romney by 50 percent to 43 percent among likely voters, with key groups in the president’s coalition such as minorities, young people, and upscale white women providing him support comparable to their levels in 2008.

The survey, conducted by Ed Reilly and Jeremy Ruch of FTI Communications, a communications and strategic consulting firm, surveyed 1,055 likely voters by landline and cell phone from Sept. 15-19. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. Full results from the survey, including a detailed look at Americans’ attitudes about opportunity and upward mobility, will be released in the Sept. 22 National Journal.

Obama’s approval rating in the new survey also ticked up to 50 percent, with 46 percent disapproving. That’s a slight improvement from May, when the survey of all adults found 47 percent approving and 48 percent disapproving. Among all adults, Obama’s rating improved to 49 percent approving and 45 percent disapproving, also one of his best showings since January 2010.
Those gains are critical, because as always with an incumbent president, attitudes toward Obama’s performance powerfully shape the race. Among likely voters who approve of Obama’s job performance, he leads Romney in the ballot test by 93 percent to 3 percent; those who disapprove prefer Romney by 87 percent to 5 percent. //

    Doghouse Riley, with the shorter:

… Let’s just say it plainly: Mitt Romney is not smart enough to be President of the United States. Paul Ryan is not smart enough to be Vice President of the United States. And that’s taking into consideration the last pair the Republican party and its Court subsidiary foisted on us. And it’s taking into consideration the fact that both men are professional liars, and likely personally dishonest into the bargain. There’s lying, and then there’s lying in such a way that you register enough contempt for the listener to not be bothered with good lies.

This is the Republican party. It’s the Republican party since 1980, the Republican party since the time it lied its way past Watergate, lied its way past Vietnam and Civil Rights, and decided that lying was the key to a shining future. This is the party which has believed, since the Ascension of St. Ronnie, that advertising plus money was not only more powerful than the truth, it was better than the truth. Even smart Republicans have to see, now, what that’s got them. Assuming there are any.

And to top it off, it looks like Mitt’s campaign doesn’t have the money it claimed to have raised. For the last six months we’ve heard nothing but “Mitt Romney out shines President Obama in raising Money.” It makes you wonder what happened to all those big time money-men that supposedly were going to bankroll Mitt’s campaign. The guy had to take out a twenty-million dollar loan just to keep his campaign afloat, Bernie Madoff ain’t got nothing on these crooks. Mitt Romney may be the first candidate in history to have his campaign built on a Ponzi scheme.

Thanks 57 – a very good read, and this part of the exchange stuck me in particular:

// John: “I don’t think the enthusiasm polling is being measured properly or at least not in groups or individuals here in Colorado Springs, or at least not with individuals whom I have been talking with.”

Me: “Are you saying that the Republicans you are talking to are not excited about voting for Romney?”

Harold: “Worse than they were about voting for McCain.” //

That’s the same impression I’m getting – that the enthusiasm in the GOP is worse than it was in 2008, despite MSM and pollsters’ efforts to suggest otherwise.

PLEASE EVERYONE read this amazing piece on Cornel West and Tavis Smiley. It plain terms it reveals the REAL reason why they are bitter towards President Obama. http://wattree.blogspot.com/2012/09/its-time-to-boycott-tavis-west-and-all.html

So Tavis and West have President Obama in a position where if he continues to be the president of ALL the people, as he should be, they’re going to divide his Black support; but if he caters to their call for him to pay special attention to the Black community, he’s going to have two problems – congress is going to dig in, so he won’t be able to get anything passed, and beyond that, it’s going to divide his White support. So instead of doing everything they can to help improve the condition of the poor and middle class (Black and White), Tavis and West are playing silly, self-serving little games to divide the people, help the Republicans, and promote their own meanspirited agenda.
    .
So why are Tavis and West playing these games when they know it’s hurting both the country, and the administration of the first Black President of the United States?
    .
It’s simple – for spite. As I mentioned previously, since Black people are a product of the very same racist environment as White people, many Black people have attitudes that are just as arrogant, condescending, and racist toward other Blacks as any White racist, and this is clearly the case with Tavis and West. They think that they’re above us, and that we’re such undereducated and politically unsophisticated idiots that they can us our ignorance to their advantage – and to a limited degree, they have been.
    .
You see, contrary to what they would have use believe, these two don’t love Black people; they think they OWN us. And they don’t see us as people; they see us as a commodity to be manipulated, barter

ed and sold. That explains why Tavis and West are so upset with President Obama. When he went around them to get our vote, as far as they’re concerned, he stole something from them.

Thanks squarepeg for linking. This is a fabulous take down of these two media-whores. Right now, there are very few AA voters who take these fools seriously. Their days in the spotlight are numbered and they know it.

Great read, I once admired both West and Smiley.

Me too. West has urned into a cartoon. Tavis…well, he’s just gone haywire.
“they’re going to divide his Black support”
Yeah, good luck with that. They may be able to pick off a few outliers but 95+ percent of AA voters are still with PBO. I know the Repugs have been able to persuade some white folks to vote against their own interest. But as John Lewis has said “we have come too far together to ever turn back.”

We’re as ‘small’ a business as one could get, my husband and I. We need to hire private contractors here and there, but it’s 98% just my husband and I.

When we started our business we went to the Small Business Administration. Most of what they were offering was more than we needed, except some information on accounting and how to track expenses and what questions to ask an accountant to make sure we hired the right one. It wasn’t much, but it was immensely helpful.

When PBO talked about redistribution he was talking about resources. So someone who wants to open a hardware store in OK can find an SBA office to help him (that business owner could get sooo much help from SBA)

That’s giving everyone a fair shot. When your name is Romney and you need a $1M investment as a new PE firm, your name replaces the SBA. But that’s not a fair shot. That’s taking advantage, that’s true ‘entitlement’ in the sneering manner that Repubicans have attached to a decent word.

I’m sure this was discussed in length last night. I did not feel well and went to bed as soon as I got home from work (and I’m working from home today). I’m just catching up. I have only one thing to say:

    “Scott Brown. What a dick.”

I have been working in Orange County, CA, Republicanland, and I have only seen ONE Romney bumper sticker and but NO Obama bumper stickers. I think people are not putting bumper stickers on their cars because last time, after the president won, people were being laid off I heard a radio show talk show host say go out in the parking lot and fire all the people with Obama bumper stickers. My city is OBAMA Country because there are so many Obama bumper stickers…old ones and new ones.

Hey Jojocat, I live in Orange County CA too! I’ve been noticing tons of Obama stickers! I very rarely see a Romney sticker on a car. I’ve been noticing this since last summer. What part of Orange County do you live in?

        Hi Sherry,

I was working in Santa Ana. I saw an Obama bumper sticker today on my way home. I was just working there for this week only. I live in Pasadena, CA. In 2010 I did canvassing in Santa Ana for the Democratic party to get our great Democratic Governor and the rest of the team elected.

It seems like every morning now for the past 2-3 weeks since the convention, Chuck Todd does or says something that pisses people off on Twitter!

Oh Japa, that is stunningly powerful, I can’t even get my head around it right now, every line needs to be thought about and savored. Need to read it again. Thank you so much for the link.

I would love to have her actually be able to say this directly to his face and see how he responds. I am sure he would 1) try to cut her off, 2)say he wasn’t really talking about her and 3) stutter and change the subject. You may want to make a post of it.

I apologize if this has been put up before. Haven’t had a chance to go through the last two threads and I can’t see any videos while at work.

So, if you don’t want to argue, why have Sunnunu on?
Makes no sense. Nobody wants to listen to Him Ramble on, he is way to emotional…

Good morning, everybody, life is good and The Creator Is Good. Another day of action for The President and The Obama Campaign. Romney slowly and somewhat faster is shooting himself in the foot, every time he speaks to the American People, nuff said. Have a great day, and enjoy your life!!!!!!!
