Non-news of the day: Mitt releases 2011 tax returns and a statement from an accounting agency about his previous 20 years of returns, saying he had an average annual tax rate of 20.??% – or something like that. Ho hum.

Since he’s so concerned about people who don’t pay income tax – maybe he can tell us if he’s part of the 47%. He hasn’t had a job in ten years, so it’s likely that he hasn’t paid income tax in ten years, either. All his income comes from capital gains, which he wants to eliminate all taxes on capital gains …for the good of the middle class, of course…

At a press conference this morning, a reporter asked Boehner whether Republicans were “eventually going to have to raise taxes in some way” if the president wins in November.

“No,” replied Boehner. “Raising taxes, according to Ernst and Young, would threaten our economy with a loss of 700,000 jobs. Now why would I ever be for something like that? I’m not.”

This is why the DNC needs to campaign on throwing out the “no compromise, just say no, do nothing congress members.” They have got to make the no compromise repub candidates the bad guys.

The people that didn’t understand Obama’s inside/outside comments are clearly dumb with zero common sense! He meant that the American people have the power to change Washington! Change this country! Cuz the people IN Washington are too hard-headed to get stuff done, mostly cuz of the repubs.

Barack Obama is a masterful politician. A man like him comes along only once in a lifetime. I’m thankful to God Almighty that I am alive at this moment in human history to witness him in action.

      September 21, 2012 at 9:24 pm

I think of Barack Obama as more of a grand statesman vs a politician. He is more into changing things because they need to be changed. He wants us to advocate for ourselves and be the change agent just as he helped the people in the tenements learn to advocate for themselves during his Community Organizing days.

Being a Community Organizer, a college graduate majoring in foreign relations, the president of the Harvard Law Review, a Constitional Law Professor, an IL State Senator, an author/writer, and a US Senator all add up to the perfect background for the office of the US President.

Another reason why I wanted him to be President is his whole life has been about helping people. His reasons for progressing up the political ladder is because of being in a position more likely to be able to help, not just for personal gain or stature. He tries to do what he promises and keeps promises that he is able to do. His achievements are great even when the odds are so against him.

PBO’s temperment shows him being civil in his mannerisms, being thoughtful and reflective, listening to others, gathering information and hearing opinions before making critical decisions. These traits add to his ability to make good judgements. His church values show through actions and volunteerism, being a good father, husband, and citizen and wanting to promote peaceful interactions. He does all while staying tough on those doing harm against us to keep us safe. He genuinely cares about people and consoles us effectively. Those character traits are exemplary and make him the best President I have been able to vote for in my voting lifetime. I was not able to vote for JFK due to not being voting age then and consider PBO in line with JFK.

If the past is an indicator of the future, how could we believe a summary of Romney’s past taxes? Romney told MA that he was eligible to be their governor and to take his word on it. It was found out later he had indicated his Utah home as his main residence to receive a tax deduction there, not his MA home. He amended his taxes retroactively to pay MA when push came to shove.

Mitt Romney has continuously lied making up things about Obama and repeating them even when the fact checkers said the accusations were untrue. His campaign said they were not going to let fact checkers dictate to their campaign. How can we believe years of tax summaries based on these lies? We need to see the details not have someone tell us what they want us to hear.

I just listened to Ann Romney talking about how “hard” it is to listen to fellow Repubs being critical of Mittens. She told them to “stop it”. If you look at what Michelle has had to hear over the years–the racist sick crap. Well Ann, you have no clue of what hard is–and Michelle and the President bore it with grace. God bless them–some of it had to hurt.

Auni, Queen Ann is a whiner without any class. Political wives since the dawn of time have endured insults and threats to their husbands and vicious insults against themselves–that’s part of the territory. Look at the nasty and despicable things that were said about FDR and Eleanor; look at how much Pat Nixon had to bear or how much utter racist, disrespectful crap Michelle Obama has to suck up day after day after day. If Ann and her husband are so thin-skinned that they can’t stand attacks, there’s nothing keeping them in the race. They can go home, sit on one of their many decks and make more millions. Nobody would care or miss them.

Stephanie Miller on Current TV was all over the “Stop It” comment. Step’s a comedian so she had a ball. But really, Ann sounded like she was talking to the “help”. How many times has FLOTUS asked anyone to stop being mean to her husband? President Obama has been called everything but the child of God by Repubs and far left wackos. If Ann thinks it’s so “hard” then she and her lying husband should go back to one of their gazillion homes and play like they are king and queen.

Auni, it’s just another illustration of Miss Ann’s & her husband’s narcissistic entitled beliefs. It’s all about them. Poor Me. Poor Mitt! Please. My first memory of “presidential/first family grace” was learning about the death of John K. Kennedy in elementary school; watching film and looking at pictures and seeing REAL GRACE with which Jackie Kennedy, Caroline and John-John conducted themselves during that unspeakable tragedy. Particularly, when they knew that there were factions of our country that thought the solution was to brutally end JFK’s presidency and take their husband/father from them. THAT’s HARD. Our illustrious Prez and our lovely First Lady know too well what’s hard. They withstand the racist emails, the birther “jokes”, the watermelon and bbqs at the WH jokes, the sick and ignorant caricatures/cartoons of them, the daily disrespect from factions of the MSM and portions of the American electorate that are still to this day trying to de-legitmize his presidency. THAT’s HARD. Yet they get up every day and dedicate themselves to trying to make life better for all Americans. THAT’s GRACE. PBO and FLOTUS have more grace in their pinky fingers than the entire Rmoney clan put together. We can end their misery for them by re-electing our illustrious Prez and FLOTUS and getting as many Repugs out of Congress on Nov. 6. That way they can return to their bubble and continue playacting at being King and Queen of Rmoneyland.

Ann Romney is not ready to be FLOTUS, if she is going to whine about criticism of her husband. She should ask Michelle Obama all the nasty things that have been said about her husband, not only from the right and the left, but also from a few in the AA community. She should also ask Hillary Clinton what she had to endure for eight years when right wingers were accusing her and her husband of being murderers.

Mitt Romney and his campaign are fundamentally stupid. He thinks a Friday news dump of his cleaned up 2011 tax returns will distract voters? He gave $4M to charity yet took $2.25M in charitable deductions. How can that properly be called “charity?” His effective tax rate was about 14%. That is way lower than what middle-class Americans pay and way lower than what the so called 47% pay even without them paying federal income taxes. The 47% who don’t pay federal income taxes pay about 15% in other kinds of taxes.

He then says he’s only releasing a tax summary from 1990-2009 (20 years) and that the average of those tax returns is 20.2%. Still way lower than than what everyday Americans pay. Does he really think that voters will view that as him being transparent? Hahahahahaha….who the hell is running this campaign?

    • 58 theo67
      September 21, 2012 at 3:16 pm

Since those prior tax returns have already been prepared and are readily available (several of which were provided to the McCain camp – prompting them to pick Palin), the only reason he’s submitting a summary only has to be because he’s got something to hide. It has to be. Even more curious now – although, I’m tired of his lies on this subject.

The numbers are in, and the title of most watched speech of either party’s national convention this year belongs to Vice President Joe Biden.

Nielsen estimates that there are roughly 289.7 million TV viewers in the United States. Of those viewers, 14.7 percent watched Biden’s speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

President Obama came in second with 13.7 percent. Mitt Romney ranked third with 12.5 percent. And former President Bill Clinton came in fourth with 10.9 percent.

      Uhm….Mitt Romney third??? I don’t think so.

First of all, these numbers don’t tell the whole story because they’re only about TV viewing. Furthermore, the actual numbers of people who watched get obscured in this formula because it doesn’t take into account grassroots watch parties, where a group of people gather at a single location or house. Democrats tend to have more internet viewers as well as more grassroots watch parties. I would wager that taking into account internet viewers, watch parties, etc., Obama, Biden, Clinton and FLOTUS ALL had far more viewers than Mitt Romney.

I just want to share this personal experience… I mentioned several weeks ago that the guy who bought my house here in ND was a tea party/ repub/ mormon.. and a Romney voter.. and a bigot to boot. Now mind you when he first agreed to buy my house, I allowed him to move his camper to the back of my lot/yard to live- as there has been few places to rent here w/ the oil boom/ influx of job seekers… anyhow so from June til now, he & his wife have lived in their camper.. hooking up to my electricity & water until the end of August. In the meantime, the house I was trying to buy took forever in MD to get approved- thus I’ve stayed way longer here than I ever wanted or intended. My buyers here want to move my house & build a new house- but have allowed me to remain so I didn’t have to go elsewhere and pay rent. Thus my point is- how POTUS is always telling us that we have more things in common than different… this is my example of that. Because of me, my buyers have had water, internet & electric free for about 3 months… because of them, I’ve had a home rent free for 2 months… and we’ve not merely been civil to one another- but friendly & kind. Though theres no way we’d ever agree politically- we’ve managed to live side by side w/ respect toward one another. And the truth is- we all do this on our jobs in our neighborhoods, our schools- we interact with one another in common ways- on that level – the majority of us DO take care of one another, imo. And it shows again, how bloody brilliant and wise our President is.

Originally Mitt had an effective rate of 9%, not 14%. However, to bring it up to over 13%, which he said during the primary was the lowest he’d ever paid. He even said that if he’d paid more than he owed, he wouldn’t be qualified to be president. So, what does he do? He goes back and gives more as charitable to raise his actual effective rate to 14%. Wow, too bad I’d sabotage him, or I’d run his campaign for just a portion of the bonus money.

Last week, I had a once-in-a-lifetime experience: I taught President Obama how to speak some Korean.

I was one of the lucky Nevadans who got to meet the President backstage before his grassroots rally at Cashman Center in Las Vegas. He greeted me and other supporters with a beaming smile and a big hug. After shaking his hand and telling him what an honor it was to meet him, I asked President Obama if he knew any Korean. He immediately replied, “An-young-ha-se-o,” each syllable drawn out and enunciated in a way I’d never heard before. Surprised and delighted, I asked him if I could teach him a new Korean word. “Sure,” he said.

“Manseh! Manseh!” I shouted. He repeated it back to me. I told the President he could shout that out on Election Day – “manseh” means “victory” in Korean. He grinned and pumped his fist in the air. “All right, manseh!”

There are few moments in life where the span of passing seconds can be recalled with such vivid, crisp clarity; that’s one of them for me. The whole experience was so meaningful, I know it will live in my heart as a memory I will always cherish.

Cheap shot warning against a candidate’s wife (eh, who cares):

Is it too cynical of me to think Queen Ann will be planning a “rest” due to stress or her waning stamina when the campaign gets even worse for Mittens between now and election day (ala Hillary’s tears during ’08, I believe in NH, which I thought was planned then, even though I’ve forgiven her by now) to garner sympathy for him? She already has made it known that after the primary, she had to step back and rest due to her medical issues and because of al the “stress.” I mean, we’re “lucky to have him” and all that, but he might need the sympathy vote as a push over their imaginary finish line (he’ll no doubt be finishing last), and this cynical thought came to my mind since I wouldn’t put it past the throne-seekers.

ONe TODer (it might’ve been sherij (sp?) said earlier today that Ann is acting like a spoiled debutante who cannot believe people are speaking bad about her and her husband. While MIchelle Obama has been enduring UNSPEAKABLE hate-filled and venomous insults with dignity and grace.

Beautifully said! Role model = Michelle Obama. How not to act as a woman = Ann Romney.

Some of us “suffered through” women’s liberation (gladly) so future generations of women could (a) be whatever they wanted to be and be treated equally, and (b) act as confident as a whole separate entity as our dear FLOTUS does every day – and as the debutante-wife clearly does not.

Ann Romney is out of touch with ordinary americans and is certainly not helping her husband. However, I’m genuinely concerned about her health. It’s obvious she’s very stressed and let’s be honest, seeing the man you love being humiliated on the national scene isn’t fun for anybody.

Mrs. Romney isn’t an evil person. She has a lesson or two to learn, but she’s not evil. I don’t want her to get sick, that wouldn’t be charitable.

If she can’t stand the heat, she should have her upstairs maid go get her downstairs maid. Then she could ask the downstairs maid where the kitchen is so that she could stay out of it.

Who would feel so sorry for Romneybot if Lady Ann took a “rest” enough to vote for him? I don’t think that would be a winning strategy. I don’t think she’s as well liked as some on the Right (cough **Politico** cough) would like us to believe.

I have to admit – I had the same thought yesterday about the sympathy vote. I can feel it coming. Now, if she genuinely becomes unwell, then I hope it doesn’t become serious and I’ll wish her a speedy recovery – I know she’s battled cancer and has MS. But, I actually (uncharitable or not) believe that it’s not beneath her to pull a stunt for the sympathy. It’s just about all they have left.

Yes, of course, I wish no harm on her, either. I’m with you on the “But … it’s not beneath her” part. So very transparent, it’s sick-e-ning.

Wow. One of the guests on Bashir just told Ron Christie (Republican hack) he has the same problem Romney does. He’s cold. This was repeated several times. They were talking about the 47% and Christie was arguing “facts” and trying to justify Romney. Did that shut him up! He looked stunnned for a bit.

I saw that too! He told him off good.

    • September 21, 2012 at 4:25 pm

It was Ari Melber. What was more striking was when he told him that they were “cold,” Chrstie simply shook is head in agreement. He did not really try to contradict what Melber said. Wow!

      • September 21, 2012 at 4:32 pm

Yes. Saw that. Martin was right–Ari’s parents raised him right. He waited patiently for stupid Ron Christie to finish, then BAM KABOOM!!! Air was some awesomeness!

Is there a reason why MSNBC has Christie on several shows to yell his support of Repubs? I cannot stand him. Does nothing but sneer and yell and interrupt other speakers.

Tnmtngirl, good to see you here. Yes, Ari is very smart. He made his point to Ron. I love to listen to Ari Melber. I wish he and Krystal Balll could haave a program together. Ron is always “attitudal frozen.” Good to see Ari tell Ron to his face.

Correction, I miscontrued the facts upthread about Mittiful’s taxes. What actually happened was he paid more points in taxes than he should have. He gave 4M in charity but took less in charitable deduction credits than what was due him. By doing that, he was able to keep his effective tax rate at 14% rather than the 9% it would have been under the full deduction credit he was entitled to. Earlier he had said that doing something like that would disqualify him for the presidency. Even though he engineered it so that he’d pay more taxes, he cheated on his taxes. Plus, the intent was not to be generous, but to keep his tax rate above the 13% he’d previously said was the lowest he’d ever paid. He purposely did not file them according to the tax laws.

I hope the pundits (ALL of them, not just the night crew at MSNBC) will have the guts to talk about this !! And I can’t WAIT for Colbert of Stewart to make fun of the situation !!!

The Romney campaign is making history. Seriously, one of the most disastrous presidential campaign EVER !!

thanks for explaining this cookemom. i hope everyone gets to see and understand this–his ‘charitable’ donations that he doesn’t like to ‘brag’ about, are really manipulations of the tax code to benefit himself, not others.

By their own boisterous admission, the Romney’s intentionally overpaid by $1.75 million to avoid paying a tax rate lower than 13 percent. He intentionally overpaid $1.75 million in taxes to avoid contradicting himself.

His effective tax rate if he chose not to overpay would have been roughly 9 percent.

14.1 percent is still lower than most Americans pay and, needless to say, not everyone has the luxury of overpaying nearly two million dollars in taxes just to avoid making a gaffe.

One should never underestimate Mitt Romney though, because he still managed to pull a gaffe out of the hat.

He did not pull this gaffe out of the hat. He reinforced the question, what won’t he do to become president? He hides his money overseas to avoid paying taxes, yet this year he doesn’t take all the tax credits due him, just because he’s running for president. This is like him saying he fired his landscaper cause he’s running for president fer gosh sakes.

As a senior on Medicare, I find Paul Ryan’s attitude at the AARP event in New Orleans to be offensive and condescending to the point of nausea. How dare that little twerp in his ill-fitting suit insult the intelligence of seniors with blatant lies about the president and the ACA? Who does he think he’s talking to? I think the audience was amazingly disciplined to just boo, because I would have walked out of the place after telling the idiot to mind his manners. As Nancy Pelosi said the other day in her interview with that silly Crowley women, seniors “know.” They get it. Ryan is a disaster. He is such a turnoff to older voters, women, minorities, young people and anyone with two brain cells, that he might as well call it a day and go back home to Janesville right now. He makes Dan Quayle look like a charming genius.
