NYT Editorial: Mitt Romney …. told CBS News’s “60 Minutes” that he is tied with President Obama; he has a “very effective campaign; it’s doing a very good job” …. That’s an outright denial of political reality, but Mr. Romney’s willingness to stray from the truth is at the root of what’s really going on….

To some extent, Mr. Romney’s diminishing stature is because of two recent statements that revealed his deficiencies to a newly interested audience. He falsely suggested that the Obama administration was sympathetic to the violent Muslim protests in Libya and Egypt, illustrating his ignorant and opportunistic critique of foreign policy. And he was caught on video belittling nearly half the country for an overreliance on government handouts.

These moments, though, were not fumbles or gaffes. They were entirely consistent with the dismissive attitude Mr. Romney has routinely shown toward non-Americans or the non-rich….

Mr. Romney is free to pursue this shallow, cavalier campaign for six more weeks, but he shouldn’t be surprised if voters increasingly choose not to pay attention.

BBC: America’s sixth-largest credit card issuer has agreed to pay $200m in refunds to settle accusations it misled customers into add-on services.

Discover Bank will also pay a $14m fine, after regulators said it enrolled clients in schemes such as credit monitoring, without consent.

It is the third public enforcement action taken by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

More than 3.5 million customers are to receive refunds. About two million of them will be repaid all the charges against them.

Eugene Robinson: When Michelle Obama called voting rights “the movement of our era” in a speech Saturday night, she didn’t specifically mention the Republican-led crusade for restrictive voter identification laws. She didn’t have to.

Her audience at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual gala dinner fully understood the context. It’s hard to believe that, in this day and age, the right to vote is once again under assault from those who would prefer to keep minorities, the poor and the elderly away from the polls. But here we are.

…. “We cannot let anyone discourage us from casting our ballots,” the first lady said Saturday. “We cannot let anyone make us feel unwelcome in the voting booth. It is up to us to make sure that in every election, every voice is heard and every vote is counted.”

Indeed, it is up to us. Get registered. Get out and vote.

Jonathan Cohn (TNR): Fifty million Americans have no health insurance. Does government have an obligation to help them? The answer is no, Mitt Romney suggested during a “60 Minutes” interview that aired on Sunday, in part because people can already get care through emergency rooms:

We do provide care for people who don’t have insurance, people – we – if someone has a heart attack, they don’t sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance, and take them to the hospital, and give them care.

…. While he was governor of Massachusetts he argued that ERs were a lousy way to provide care – not just because they were expensive and necessarily episodic, but also because taxpayers and payers of private insurance premiums ended up paying indirectly for those services….

…. Romney’s strategy for health care isn’t “repeal and replace,” as he sometimes likes to say. It’s “repeal and reverse,” as my colleague Ed Kilgore has called it. And it’d leave the ERs even more inundated than they are now.

Washington Post editorial: Now we get it: Mitt Romney’s refusal to specify what tax breaks he proposes eliminating is not a matter of dangling tantalizing goodies in front of voters now, before the election, and postponing the painful part until later. No, Mr. Romney’s dodging is, he claimed in an interview broadcast Sunday, an example of his strong leadership skills.

…. Mr. Romney’s version of leadership may be to avoid specifics; we think a more courageous leader would trust voters with a menu that includes both dessert (rate cuts) and spinach (limited deductions). Bold leadership would be to spell out a plausible, though not set in stone, pathway to a broader tax base; it would be to let voters know what they’re buying, rather than ask them to sign onto a details-to-follow tax plan.

It’s understandable, if not admirable, that Mr. Romney prefers not to level with voters about what it would take to lower rates as much as he proposes without losing revenue. Hearing Mr. Romney congratulate himself for this dodge is a bit much.

Hi Ourmanflint (& TrumpDog), thought you’d want to know the emergency room doctor said my foot will be alright following its encounter with the door yesterday; I’ll be sending you the bill for the x-ray once it arrives. The cop who was present wanted me to press charges under ‘reckless endangerment’ but I told him ‘Nah, it was just a family squabble over precious and valuable pictures and we prefer to settle this as a family.’ Have a great day!

AH! Kindred spirits:) My foot met up with the underside of the ottoman last week! I think I broke a little foot bone….all swollen and black and blue. Over a week later and it’s getting better, but still not completely ok…..I walk around with one of those boots on my foot when I’m at work, to protect it from 2nd graders and their chairs and feet:) At least it’s not my “driving foot!” Sorry vc….

Aw, Df! Sorry! I saw a recent reference to your foot but didn’t know what had happened. I’m happy to hear YOUR foot is mending, even if it seems slow, and I hope you’ll be back on track very, very soon. I confess  MY foot got caught in virtual warfare, so it only hurts mentally that a family member would be so careless of my walking, and door-entering member while in the village.

    GOOD MORNING FELLOW OBAMANIANS!

You guys have GOT TO READ this Balloon Juice post: http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/09/25/the-last-four-years-in-one-quote/#comments

And then read the comments underneath, too. HI-LARIOUS!!!!!!!! Good laugh for the morning.

    Here’s my favorite:

It’s funny when you can actually hear them thinking “Let me go listen to Rush first to see what I’m supposed to think about this” almost as if out loud.

Poor guy. Rush and FOX need to give these people tools, dammit, to go out and be talking point generators on their own.[/i]

Oh God… i turned the channel to MSNBC and what do i see…Robot and Bill Clinton standing next to each other on the same stage o_0. Robot speaking at Clinton’s Global Initiative. Bill even introduced him ugh. Clinton did look uncomfortable shaking his hand tho. But anyway, Robot still trying to connect himself to Billy to gain cheap votes, which won’t work. Somebody needs to tell him that Billy doesn’t support him.

Just as an aside, I know that the news has been good in our favor, but I think we need to work just as hard, or HARDER…Dems down ticket need to be elected and the nutbags kicked to the curb and neutered. Made totally irrelevant. We need to leave it all on the road…step on the gas and not let up. I’m sick to death of crazy crap like this even being part of the conversation. Four years of this shit has made me more grey and exhausted than I need to be. The only way they will get a clue is if they lose so badly that it’s embarrassing. That’s what we should all intend to do!

    Good morning all….

If you get some time…please watch this….it is about the politics of Geography….I was blown away by it . I tuned in right when the Q & A started so I have to watch the entire show myself.

Center for a New American Security ….The Revenge of Geography.

Robert Kaplan, the chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor, discussed the role that geography has played in shaping world events and talked about the role it will play in the future.

He was interviewed by David Ignatius and responded to questions from members of the audience at this book launch event held by the Center for a New American Security in the Willard InterContinental Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

Good morning, TODville. Really looking forward to POTUS’ address to the UN general assembly. And of course, seeing our FLOTUS.

This is an EXCELLENT time to volunteer at your local OFA office. We are ramping up activities quite a bit right now and there is plenty to do: register voters, phonebank, fundraise, canvas, recruit volunteers, enter data, coordinate travel to battleground states or travel there yourself. Lots to do! And there are leadership roles to fill if you are so inclined. You will learn a lot and have a great time with fellow volunteers. PBO volunteers are the best.

    You can start here:

    http://www.barackobama.com/index.php

Click on “Get Involved” to sign up for information, join groups, join Dashboard. If there isn’t an OFA office in your region, there’s plenty you can do from your computer!

    THANK YOU.

    Mother Jones –

Mitt Romney’s taxes are once again in the news thanks to Friday’s release of his full 2011 tax return. As with his 2010 filings, the documents highlight the GOP candidate’s extensive overseas holdings, which some tax experts believe has allowed him to lessen his tax liability. But the problem with Romney’s reliance on offshore tax havens goes beyond his own tax bill.

The Internal Revenue Service and many members of Congress have sought for years to close some of the loopholes that are draining billions of dollars from the federal treasury and shifting the tax burden from wealthy corporations to average individuals. Yet through his work at Bain Capital and his personal investments, Romney has supported a shadowy financial system with far-reaching ramifications for the US and foreign governments…..

    snip/

James Henry, a former chief economist at McKinsey & Co., describes offshore tax havens like the “bar scene in Star Wars.” He explains, “Dictators and kleptocrats used them to conceal stolen loot. Arms dealers and drug dealers use them to launder their deals. Google and Apple and Pfizer use them to park their intellectual property and pay themselves tax-free royalties. Banks use them to park lousy loans and stash the offshore accounts and assets under management of their wealthy individual clients, many of which are paying zero taxes back home…And so on.”

Mitt Romney’s campaign is hoping it can match the unparalleled success of President Obama’s ground-game operation as early voting begins in a number of key states.

But in some places it is still playing catch-up to the Obama juggernaut.
