NYT Editorial: The Economy and the Blame …. The problem with Mr. Romney’s “blame Obama” mantra is that Mr. Obama is not responsible for the deep and protracted recession that predated his administration and is at the root of the persistently high unemployment. Job creation under Mr. Obama’s term far outpaced the job growth following the first recession of George W. Bush’s presidency in 2001. New evidence released this week showed recent employment has been stronger than previously tallied.
…. The challenge is to foster the recovery and then put the budget on a sustainable path. Meeting the first challenge requires a belief that government has a stimulative role to play at times of economic weakness and a willingness to play it, which only Mr. Obama has demonstrated. Meeting the budget challenge requires raising taxes, which Mr. Obama is prepared to do but Mr. Romney is not.
He has assumed voters will reject Mr. Obama because of the weak economy. They may well re-elect him because the economy needs more help.

Dana Milbank: Meet Willard Mitt Romney, champion of the common man ….. When it comes to speaking up for the downtrodden, Romney isn’t just another man of the people. He is the Rolls-Royce of populists.
With evidence building that his prospects have been hurt by his dismissal of nearly half the country as moochers, Romney has been making it his job to worry about the 47 percent of Americans he famously said it wasn’t his job to worry about.
But when such an appeal is attempted by a man who has painstakingly crafted for himself a public image combining Scrooge McDuck and Thurston Howell III, there is bound to be a certain amount of awkwardness and inconsistency…..
…. Why the Baron of Bain would be making a late appeal to the downtrodden is obvious. The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that Americans regard Romney’s “47 percent” remarks negatively, 54 percent to 32 percent. Respondents who self-describe as independent, the all-important demographic, regarded the comments even more negatively.

Charles Blow: Mitt Romney is losing badly. And he has only himself to blame. Not only is he trailing President Obama in almost every national poll, he’s trailing in almost every poll of swing states.
What is the Republican response? That there must be some magical, maniacal skew in the numbers, and the skew must be a conscious effort by a scheming, elite media to dampen Republican enthusiasm.
…. This is just an extension of the Republican war on facts. If you find a truth disagreeable, simply deny it. Call it corrupt. Suggest that it is little more than one side of a story — an opinionated, biased one — and insist that there is another explanation. The base will buy it.
Let’s just call this Operation Ostrich…..

Genius!
Daily Beast: Barack Obama’s Campaign Scoring Points With Video Gamers
You’ve sunk my battleship! That popular phrase ran endlessly in long-ago TV commercials promoting the board-game version of naval warfare. Now, that battleground has morphed into a digital shootout that could tip the balance of the presidential campaign.
The Obama team has targeted Battleship and 17 other online games—including Scrabble, Tetris, and Madden NFL 13—in highly contested swing states to woo legions of early voters.
By placing ads alongside these popular titles by Electronic Arts, the president’s campaign hopes to replicate the past success of this strategy. In 2008, surveys found that gamers who saw political ads were 120 percent more likely to have a positive reaction to the candidate, and 50 percent more likely to consider casting a vote for him.

Moooooooooooooorning everyone

GM!
G’day majii and congratulations on #1!
Moooooooorning majii!!!!
Thanks for the pic, Ms. Chipsticks! I was reading Dana Milbank’s article, and it doesn’t seem that he believes Romney cares about the the majority of Americans, either.
May the best cheater win…..whoops, meant to say Congrats on 1st Majii!!!
LOL! Last night just happened to have been one of those nights when I couldn’t get to sleep, and since I have an addiction to TOD, I wandered over and said GM. That’s the only reason I was first today!! I hope I’ll be able to sleep tonight.
Oh dear, well, you totally earned the first place, and your lovely prize! Take care today! Majii!
How do I sign in? I’ve read your House rules and signed into WordPress, but it never shows up on this page. I’m a supporter of Pres. Obama, and work for OFA.WY? Please help!
Hi Carol, sorry, didn’t spot your messages before. Are you on Twitter? Thanks!
Good morningChips! & TODs
Love my first family !
We can tell!
3comments
Ha! Here is a tie for first and a tie for second…. fun day shaping up with a beautiful Harvest Moon at 8:19 PST tonight!
Uh oh, am I at the wrong place???? Everyone sleeping? Well, I have no news, except that all of a sudden there are LOTS & LOTS of Joe Walsh ads all over my TV now, quite scary.
Good Morning TOD family. Congrats on first. I have two new voter registration forms to turn in on Monday. Again, I just carry my clipboard and they come to me.
Hi libra, I love it here also, can’t wait to see who’s here &……the pictures!
Hello Chips, TOD, everyone. Happy Saturday.
Hey Chips, morning y’all. Has anyone seen the video of Lady Ann worrying about Romney’s mental stability?
Hiya Pamela, it’s in the ‘This and That’ post, two before this one
This is the oh so sad, “poor dear Myth, he just wants to be President because he wants what he wants”, even though he is markedly unqualified for the task, clip… Stupid stupid effers…
Thanks Chips. Shoulda known you guys would be on top of things! Problem is I can’t keep up with all the wonderful posts and comments.
Hi Pamela! Yours an early bird too, I perceive!
Back atcha, Pamela. The truth of the matter is I’m running on adrenaline until after the election. Here’s hoping my “mental well-being” holds out until then!
Oh, I have a feeling you will be just fine ma’am, and Fired Up is the only way to GO
Chipsticks stop being jealous of Chelsea! Juan Mata’s leg was already on that ball. It’s not Chelsea’s fault that Arsenal was stupid enough to help it along with an own goal. It’s still 2-1. :p MUAHAHAHAHA
Zzzzzzz….. sorry UT ….. I just drifted off ….. this match is making me verrrrrrrrrry sleepy ….. zzzzzzzzz.
When we kick Man U’s ass you’ll be awake then. Trust me.
Hey, amk is the joke-teller around here, stop trying to steal his job!
We just walked away with a 2-1 lead becoming the first team to ever meet Arsenal on their turf and beat them three times in a row during the leagues. You send that message to Wayne Rooney and the Red Devils and tell them The Blues are coming for them.
NO! NO! No I will not. You will not sucker me with this cutesy picture.
And hi Pam & Hopefruit, wow, what a contest we have today. Have a good weekend!
Hi Pugeretto, I didn’t realize you were tied for 1st place. Congratulations.
Hiya pug!
Hey y’all. How early do I have to get up to be first?
When you hear cock-a-doodle-do Idon!!! Morning!
Hint: before 6:00 am on the West Coast (groaning today) ( am taking Thursday off for sure)
Between 5 and 6:30 AM Arizona time, even on weekends!
That Green Bay Gazette front cover is fabulous. Nice headline; great pic of our FLOTUS; positive article. A very inspiring front page! Green Bay Gazette feels fired up and ready to go!
I agree hopefruit2, I read the article.
Good Morning all you TODobots up thread who are buzzing around and referring to 9+am as early! /Early? quite puzzling/ {Except of course for Pamela and any others who are in the 6+am time zone}
Anyways, in keeping with Bobfr conviction that 2012 can outdo 1936 (I wasn’t around then Bob
), here you go. In this election #wethepeople need to convince the GOP that the USA works better together by knocking them out with #LANDSLIDE2012.
VC – As it’s almost October – Rasmussen is suddenly beginning to catch up with the other polls (how to keep a rating as a good pollster) – so that landslide is starting
“The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows President Obama attracting support from 48% of voters nationwide, while Mitt Romney earns the vote from 46%.” This poll has been equal or Mitt ahead for weeks, while every other poll is 4-6 points for the President.
99ts: Crossing my mental fingers that Nov. 6 totally and completely discredits Rasmussen!
They come right back into line with every other poll by November, so get to say how accurate they were – fortunately most of the pundits know that & take no notice of these polls until the last few weeks. The total aim of Rasmussen is to support the GOP.
Morning! This was SO good , that I thought I’d bring it over from late last night:)
http://www.democratsforprogress.com/2012/09/28/wha-wha-what/
yes, we are totally enjoying the show! had to stock up on popcorn!
Team Obama is going for the video gamers too? DAMN! This team has taken 21st century campaigning to a whole other level. I am in awe of the brains behind Obama 2012.
Isn’t that just the smartest thing UT?!
It really is Chips. I love how behind the scenes they not only use traditional campaign veterans like Axelrod, Plouffe and Cutter but they also tapped young programmers, young ad people, and young tech geeks who have taken data mining to a whole new level and make sure to reach out to voters using specifics not just generalizations. It blows my mind. They are tapping into all sorts of voters.
I was AMAZED:) Who THINKS of this stuff?!
Pure genius DF, the brains in this campaign are ENORMOUS!!!!!
Yes they are! Brains are so sexy:) I love the brains and forward, inclusive thinking…
Brains not ideologues! Remembering the fiasco of the Iraq Provisional Authority when billions of dollars were lost and millions of Iraqis alienated by the GOP ideologues who were completely incompetent and arrogant makes me appreciate even more the integrity and commitment of people on the Obama administration. The campaign is similarly distinguished by its cool competence.
Michelle truly is the Closer. I was talking with someone who was talking about how she was always afraid and had a hard time getting anything done because of her fears and anxiety. I emailed her the “Be Not Afraid” video. Still so moving and true:
Sent from my iPhoneg
Even now this video cuases goose pumps to rise on my skin. She is formidable.
i can’t believe I have never seen that before. She didn’t need much practice as she was ready right from the start for her role of FLOTUS.
Wow, I swear PBO looks like he is 30 years old in that video
. What a wonderful speech. I wish OFA would air this clip as one of their ads. It is mighty powerful. I have been following US politics on and off for the last 12 years and one thought that came to mind (during the Bush years) is that the country is governed using fear tactics, by the politicians – repugs of course. Flotus couldn’t have said this any better, totally spot on. I can hardly wait for Nov 6th … and keeping fingers crossed that PBO will come to visit us here in Canada someday and when he does, pls, pls, pls let it be Toronto
:):)
Yes, the president does in deed look years younger here. He is a good looking man, and is very fit. If not I think the last 4 years would have really put a hutin on him
I’ve always seen huge differences in how our president look just a year or two after office. It is a weighty job, with huge responsibilites and so many choices to make. I laugh ever time PBO or FLOTUS tells how Michille tells the president that he asked for this [job] and they laugh. It is not joke, made so much more of strain by the shinnanigans of the republicans.
Yes, Michelle Obama is indeed a “mighty weapon” and “the closer.” I love the “Be Not Afraid” speech. You and I both would love to have the awesome opportunity to see the POTUS speak in person. A handshake let alone one of the great hugs would be icing on the cake!
I’ll have to pay more attention to Canadian politics ( I was afraid I’ve have to move there in 2008!) if the McCain/Palin ticket won
Hi TODers,
Wish me luck, I’m on the road to Cincinnati, Ohio with some Obama2012 volunteers to do so Early GOTV. We from neighboring states are invading Ohio en masse this weekend until Nov 6 to get voters to the polls as well as some canvassing to get new Obama voters. Will give full report when I get back this evening. It’s hammer time!!!! Good day!
Best of luck Zizi, you’re doing WONDERFUL work!
Great job, zizi!! Come back and tell all!
That’s fantastic. You will do a wonderful job – those who unable to GOTV stand in awe. Go get em Zizi!
Have a great day Zizi! I hope you get lots of new voters registered!
And have fun too!

Now, Ft Myers is an older, middle class retirement Town. Joe is very welcome there.
My sis and bro in law live in an older, mostly conservative golf community there. She said in ’08 their neighborhood was flooded with McCain signs and bumper stickers, this time there are zero Romney signs or stickers. None. No enthusiasm in evidence anywhere for Willard.
My 95 yr. old mom is in a sr.housing development there too. She’s at the age now when I say, “Mom, remember to vote for Obama.” And she says, “Okay, honey.”
It’s just turned midnight in my world & I still can’t believe what Ann Romney said yesterday. Another secret weapon for President Obama.
Interesting to see when that shows up in the polls.
The media has totally ignored it, I bet, outside of a few blogs, nobody knows.
Wait and see Jovie – a lot of folks saw the initial reports – I think the campaign will now shut her up.
TORONTO — Canada’s public safety minister says the last Western detainee held at Guantanamo has returned to Canada.
Vic Toews said Saturday that 26-year-old Omar Khadr arrived at a military base on a U.S. government plane early Saturday and has been transferred to Millhaven maximum security prison in Bath, Ontario.
Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan and was eligible to return to Canada from Guantanamo Bay last October under terms of a plea deal.
Khadr was 15 when he was captured in 2002 in Afghanistan, and has spent a decade at Guantanamo, the U.S. naval base in Cuba. He received an eight-year sentence in 2010.
Khadr was convicted of throwing a grenade that killed Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer during a 2002 firefight.
How many more detainees are there? I’m glad PBO is still doing what he can w/o Congressional help.
I think there are about 170 ….
Damn that’s a lot. How many are American, if any? I’m embarrassingly ignorant on the Gitmo situation.
I don’t believe that any Americans are there today.
The Lemmings are coalescing around Akin-
DeMint, Graham, Coburn, Inhofe host fundraiser for Todd Akin
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 9/29/12 9:05 AM
Lightning-rod Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin is getting a fundraising assist next week from four members of the U.S. Senate, according to an event invitation a source shared with POLITICO.
Cowards!
They have NO morals – they will support anyone who will vote against the President – hopefully the voters realize what a total imbecile he is.
“First lady stays on message” vs. “I am afraid for Mitt’s mental state if he becomes president.” WOW! the contrast has never been more stark. One smart, charming, empathetic who worked hard to become accomplished, and the other self-centered, entitled, and bitter.
Have a great weekend everyone. Forward!
That should be a tweet! I’m on it!
Good Morning early birds, it is 8:20 local time for me. (I thought I was early, huh) looking at the time line, I am 2 hrs behind Chipsticks…
By the way, the gaming ads are noticed by the gamers, my son plays on line with people from the US, they are aware.
Awesome:)

Excellent article on how the media will try to generate the ‘Romney comeback narrative’:
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/09/the-coming-romney-comeback-narrative/262876/
Please read and if you tweet send around to all journalists who are likely to offend. I think it would be a good idea to put them on notice that the people are onto their games. Perhaps early pushback may help to mitigate the fullness of the ‘comeback’ story.
Also please tweet to jim lehrer (if so inclined) the following question: ‘are you prepared to deal with candidate Romney’s continual fibbing or are you just going to let him lie to the American people during debate’?
Good idea to cc other journalists into the tweets – it adds to the shame as some clever poster explained here
This is so sweet. Thomas Roberts from MSNBC is getting married.
What a strikingly handsome couple! Congrats to Thomas and his partner.
I am so thankful that we live in an age where a public figure can be properly congratulated on his nuptials. Know hope.
Awww…..what a strikingly gorgeous couple. People have been sending wonderful wishes to them on TV and on twitter. Wish them a lifetime of happiness.
Especially to Crawley….
of course they do

Cool! Looks like more people waiting in line for Joe than were at that Ann Romney rally we saw photos of the other day.
Thanks, UT. Posted to Dashboard
Love it, ut. Keep reminding the sleepyheads among us!
So the media don’t think it’s new worthy when Ann Romney says she is concern about Mitt Romney mental health if he is elected. Maybe we have to do what the media won’t do, which is ask what did Ann mean when she said that? We face problems in this country and all over the world, and we don’t need someone with mental problems leading us. No, No, No.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best way to get the media to pay attention is to do a twitter hashtag and make it trend. This always works. Whoever here that comes up with the hashtags give us one for this latest flop by Ann Romney. This is very important. The media should be reporting this.
media don’t think it’s new worthy because it wasn’t michelle obama statement. the whitey tape they try to plant on michelle was news worthy. Why? One white and one black. we all know what is going on with the Obamas. This man have save the world from falling, kill Osama, gave more people healthcare and they are calling him evil, Why? Black people know why. We live it everyday. If more white people speak up like chris m. on hardball it will change.
Thanks, Chips…posted THIS to Dashboard, too!
Good morning, Chips – wonderful photos! Thank you!
Good morning, ObamaWorld!
http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/09/romneys-plan-win-virginia-lyme-disease
On Thursday evening, Anahita Nemat, a conservative PR specialist living in Northern Virginia, tweeted out this photo, with the description: “Received my first mailer from @MittRomney & @PaulRyanVP today. It talks about Lyme Disease. Huh? I’m confused! Why?”
We were confused too. But it turns out that Romney has, over the last few months, actually made Lyme disease—the bacterial disease transmitted to humans from deer ticks—part of his pitch to suburban Virginia voters. It started back in August, when he sent a public letter (paid for by the campaign) to Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) commending him for his push to create a “Tick-Borne Diseases Advisory Committee.” “More needs to be done,” Romney wrote. “As president, I will work to ensure that more attention is focused on this important issue … We need to ensure that all scientific viewpoints concerning this illness can be heard.”
snip/
That Lyme disease epidemic Romney is so concerned about? The spread of the disease is aided and abetted by climate change. Lyme Disease already costs the US $2.5 billion annually, is expected to double in geographic scope over the next 70 years. But Romney has said government should do nothing to stop man-made climate change—if it’s even happening at all. “My view is that we don’t know what’s causing climate change on this planet,” he said at a debate last October. “And the idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce CO2 emissions is not the right course for us.”
http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/09/most-damning-line-secret-romney-video
I’ve been repeatedly asked what I consider the most damaging—or damning—portion of Romney’s remarks. I’ve noted that the great thing about this story is that people can watch the video for themselves—7 million people went to this site or YouTube in the first days of the video’s release and did that—and reach their own conclusions.
Yet one sentence did stand out to me. When Romney was in mid-rant about the 47 percent—simplistically and erroneously conflating three subsets of Americans: those who voted for Barack Obama, those who receive some form of government assistance, and those who pay no federal income taxes—he said:
I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.
Here was Romney sharing his view that Americans who don’t make enough money to pay income taxes and his fellow citizens who rely on Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, or other government programs are lesser people than he and the millionaires before him. These people, Romney was saying, are not adults; they do not, and will not, fend for themselves or do what they must to feed, clothe, shelter, educate, and care for themselves and their family members. It was an arrogant insult spoken with true detachment. This was 100-percent 1-percent.
My view of this one line was reinforced this morning. I walked into a store to buy some cleaning products. The 40-something woman at the counter rang up the purchases and kept looking at me. Once I had paid, she said in a low voice, “I really don’t want to bother you, but…”
Go ahead, I said.
But I know who you are, and I just want to say that Mitt Romney doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Not at all. I am college-educated, but look where I’m working now. I can’t find a better job now. And, and….
She paused and lowered her voice more:
I’m on food stamps. I didn’t have a choice. I’m making about $12,000 a year now. And I need them. I work hard. And I’m looking for other work. But just because I’m on food stamps doesn’t mean I’m not taking care of myself. Doesn’t he know that? Doesn’t he get it?
DF her story makes me so sad, both her situation and the fact that she was denigrated by someone who claims he wants to be President of the United States.
thanks for posting this, df. i, too, was just gobsmacked by that line–and that the sentence began i’ll never convince them…’ the insufferable arrogance of it is breathtaking.
Good day Chips & TOD family!
Heading out for an OFA Voter Protection training session. See ya later! &♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ hearts;
Saw a bit of a PBS segment last night, where a middle school boy in Florida and some of his classmates did a video about their school – and all of the challenges they faced there (which sometimes started through bullying via social media) and in the neighborhood where they were growing up – and what a fine young man he was. When his younger sister who went to the nearby elementary school almost got accosted by a guy in a car, one morning, he started taking the time out to walk her directly to her bus stop, each day, so she’d be safe. And he wasn’t a bit embarrassed about it. The young videographers got accolades from PBS and their teachers, and even the male principal said he had to stop his interview because their questions were so good, he had to go “check the data” to give them the best answers. The young male student was interviewed at the end of the segment and he said something like, “I just wish … I just wish our President could see what we young black Americans are trying to do to get through school and make something of ourselves and grow up to be good dads” (paraphrased). Gulp. Still feel like crying that the first ROLE MODEL he thought of was our President.
I am having a cry now …
I know what you mean, cluny. I’m going to try to find that video, and send it to the White House. He deserves to hear from HIS President!
Great idea – and to the First Ladies’ office too maybe.
Yes!! Haven’t found the clip yet, but I’ll keep trying.
Vote now, then volunteer…not kick back, not relax. GOTV!
Kansas, Kansas, Kansas…when will you learn?
http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/09/28/929011/kansas-governor-blame-europe/
Well at least he’s moved on from blaming President Obama.
There will be SOMETHING he says that will blame PBO. Maybe this will be the unfortunate pain that people in Kansas need to feel to figure out that they vote against their own best interests….too bad it had to happen to all those good people
I see that Ann Romney is worried about Mitt’s mental health should he become President. That begs the question, is Mitt on any type of medication? I have first hand experience with taking medication because of certain issues, I really hope Mitt is not taken on too much. I’m voting for President Obama, but that doesn’t mean I can’t wish for Mitt to have good health.
Heads up for VP Biden:
http://www.c-span.org/Campaign2012/Events/Vice-President-Biden-Campaigns-in-Florida/10737434485/
get ready for JOE, JOE, JOE!
This is a good speech – “Show me your budget and I’ll tell you what you believe”
Anyone know that PBO had Ecards???
http://www.barackobama.com/eCards
What ho, TOD peeps?
In honor of Chelsea beating Arsenal—and because blue IS the color of our side of the aisle—I’m sure Ms. Chips will extend me some latitude in posting this stirring video:
#FORWARD (to November 6 and a Premier League trophy)
Some Republicans for Obama in the house! Nice!!
this is just an excuse to post this lol picture of a stingray photobombing
Stingray City…Grand Cayman? Been there:) AWESOME
Great speech by Joe – taking it to the Repug congress. Woo Hoo!!
It is good – different crowd to yesterday – different speech – I like this one better.
Didn’t catch yesterday’s speech, but I DO love this one!
Yes! Joe is really great today – despite the heat, he’s kicking it.
How can robme have such a profound misunderstanding of the American people? Joe today! Kicking it indeed cluny
Fired up Joe
Parody – Ann Romney: “Stop It! You People Leave Mitt Romney Alone”
this is brilliant – brutal as well as hilarious
10 h later, thinking about it … this remains the most startling & certainly unprecedented statement from a spouse of a Presidential candidate I’ve ever heard and it is something Americans must take as a serious warning … no joke … and, I am not attacking Ann D Romney in any way, just the opposite ….
#OutPerform1936
Yes We Can
I totally agree Bobfr. As I said yesterday, this comment from Ann Romney just magnifies the notion that there is something seriously wrong with Mitt Romney. I still don’t know why Mitt’s pathological lying isn’t a bigger story. How do you build your entire campaign on lies? I have never seen anything like this. Steve Benen should get a book deal from all of this “Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity” posts.
A few days ago Jim Acosta of CNN confronted Romney about the fact that his ads have not been truthful. Without skipping a beat, Romeny said (paraphrasing) that his campaign has been above board and that they have corrected any errors. I watched this segment and it really scared me. This man lies with such ease. He just comes across as morally bankrupt. And has the nerve to say that HE will be fact checking President Obama at the debates. He has turned “PROJECTION” into an art form.
Ann Romney has lived with Mitt for many years and has probably had to cope with his “mental well being” many times. I get to have some warning thoughts about Mitt’s behavior when Miss Ann makes some of these remarks.
I’m wondering how he will behave when he loses – that speech may have to be outsourced.
New post everyone:
