Bloomberg: Companies added more workers than projected in September, evidence the labor market may be perking up, a private report based on payrolls showed.

The 162,000 increase in employment followed a revised 189,000 jump in August. The median forecast of 38 economists surveyed by Bloomberg projected a 140,000 advance.

Maddow Blog: …. The states in yellow are important swing states. The ones with the red X marks are the important swing states where the RNC had hired Nathan Sproul’s firm exclusively to handle their registration drive. With the contract cancelled, and no back-up plan, the RNC misses out on the final push before registration closes in these crucial states.

Ari Berman (The Nation): In a major victory for voting rights, Judge Robert Simpson of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania ruled that voters in the state do not need to show government-issued ID in order to cast a ballot in November. A full trial is scheduled for after the election to determine whether a permanent injunction will be issued against the state’s voter ID law. By my count, Pennsylvania is one of eleven voter suppression laws passed by Republicans since the 2010 election that have been invalidated by state or federal courts in the past year, including in crucial swing states like Florida, Ohio and Wisconsin

Steve Benen: Two interesting videos were released late yesterday …. this one strikes me as the more interesting one….

In the clip, we see Paul Ryan, speaking at an American Spectator event less than a year ago, explaining his distinctly Randian vision of American society…

…. Though the language is clearly different between Romney’s video and Ryan’s, the right-wing congressman’s sentiment is eerily similar – Ryan also looks at millions of his fellow countrymen and looks down on them….

What’s less clear – and what deserves additional scrutiny – is exactly which group of people Ryan disapproves of so strongly. Are America’s seniors little more than overly-dependent “takers”? How about military veterans? The disabled? Students? Low-income families crushed by a recession generated by Paul Ryan’s own policy agenda?

Cincinnati, Oct 2

Cincinnati.com: The first lady stressed the importance of Ohio – and President Barack Obama’s supporters here – in a rousing speech to 6,800 supporters in Cincinnati on Tuesday.

“We won Ohio by 262,000 votes,” Michelle Obama said. “That may sound like a lot, but when you break that down … it’s 24 votes per precinct. Take that in for a minute. That could be a couple of votes in your neighborhood, on your block. That could be a single vote in your apartment building, in your dorm room…..”….

….. Michelle Obama also talked about the man she married 20 years ago Wednesday.

“He was handsome – still is – charming, talented and extremely smart,” she said. “But that is not why I married him. So fellows, I want you to listen up. What truly made me fall in love with Barack Obama was his character. I loved that Barack was so committed to helping others.”

AP: … A new initiative being launched Wednesday by first lady Michelle Obama and the vice president’s wife, Jill Biden, is designed to better prepare educators instructing military-connected children. “Operation: Educate the Educator” already has a commitment from more than 100 colleges offering teaching degrees.

The Obama administration has partnered with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the Military Child Education Coalition to help military children as they face social, emotional and learning challenges in the classroom while having an active-duty parent.

The colleges that have signed on have agreed to incorporate information about military children in the training curriculums for student teachers, push faculty and student teachers to do research on military children and require student teachers to work with military children as part of their final clinical experience or internship.

Meta, the people in Chicago are so friendly; hubby and I got turned around downtown the night we took our bikes (on the train, no less) to ride along the lake from the Navy Pier and north) and a lady in a deli that we went into to ask directions, actually put down her purchases and left the store with us so she could point the way instead of just trying to tell us. Awesome. She was just representative of the cordial treatment we got everywhere! It was not until I was back home from that trip that I read somewhere that Chicago’s residents are so friendly … and I said, yep, I can vouch for that!!

I can’t get excited about ADP. They’ve been wildly wrong (although I wonder, when things are readjusted later on). But we all got excited over ADP numbers in August and they were terribly wrong. I’ll wait for the BLS numbers.

      • 54 hopefruit2
        October 3, 2012 at 8:37 am

Actually, it turns out that they (ADP) are probably closer to being right than the BLS department. Just last week we found that that the BLS undercounted upwards of 360K+ jobs in the past year!!

        • 55 57andFemale
          October 3, 2012 at 10:03 am

I just read a substantive article on this and you’re right. Unfortunately, it takes about 12-18 months to shake out the actual numbers, from both sources. Over an 18-month period, it ended up that BLS and ADP were very close in their numbers on average. But for the last 6 months, BLS numbers have been lower than ADP and no matter how it shakes out in the long run, it’s a talking point in this election cycle. We made a huge deal out of the ADP numbers last month, got all excited and cocky and then BLS dashed our dreams. So I’m going to wait until the end of the week before I crack open the champagne.

      • 56 collegekay
        October 3, 2012 at 8:45 am

Agree. I can’t get excited about ADP. I do expect numbers to be at or above 100k though.

        • 57 hopefruit2
          October 3, 2012 at 8:52 am

They are probably more accurate than the BLS – even though people give the BLS more credit. The BLS winds up doing a great deal of revision months later (as we saw recently).

In a new memo released in advance of Wednesday’s debate, Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter issues a prebuttal hitting Mitt Romney on a lack of specifics in his policy proposals:

Mitt Romney comes to this debate in a different position. He doesn’t have any specific plans to move us forward – only tired repeats that will take us back. On job creation, deficit reduction, and the middle class, Romney’s promises are nothing more than platitudes covering up a collection of contradictory positions. In short, they aren’t serious steps to move our country forward. So, Romney can use tonight’s debate to fill in those details and finally, for the first time, explain his proposals or readjust his positions. Or he can spend 90 minutes doing what he does best: attacking the president, distorting his own record, and avoiding any and all details on his plans for this country

Thank you Chips for all the hard work and sacrifice that you do here to make this home.

Happy Anniversay to our President and First Lady!

    Augustine(A.D.354-430) said this about love:

It has the hands to help others.
It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy.
It has the eyes to see misery and want.
It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men.
This is what love looks like.

That is a challenge to all of us.

    Based on what facts?

    • 84 Carolyn
      October 3, 2012 at 9:16 am

Toady is disappointed because there have been no scandals in this administration for him to pontificate upon and expose. He is merely announcing his own feelings, after all, the president hasn’t walked on water or turned tea partier congress critters into reasonable people. He always says such foolishness with that Ultra serious, pompous look on his face. Whenever BriWi says he’s going to have Chuck Todd “political” guru speak, I leave the room. He spews nothing but silliness.
There are two senior citizen white middle income people in this household who are completely NOT disappointed in President Obama, and are scared to death of a Romney reign. So there Toad!!!
I think he has wanted scandal upon scandal to emanate from this White House. Ain’t gonna happen!

At this point Chuck Todd is just saying whatever he feels like. He’s not about facts anymore. He is desperate. He just repeated that LIE again that Blacks and Hispanics are not enthusiastic to vote. The guy is in meltdown mode!!!

      • October 3, 2012 at 9:36 am

Then get anyone else that I know to the polls to vote too. Every black person I have talk to is ready to vote for the President. Todd has become a lying GOP bastard.

    • 89 dotster3
      October 3, 2012 at 9:24 am

No pony. No miracles. All I know is he keeps pushing the enthusiasm gap as if his life (and livelihood) depend on it. Are Dems really telling NBC pollster that they are only planning to vote if they happen to be strolling by the polling place on election day? Because that is what he is insinuating. Or is there some funny business going on with the LV tabs? —–making the meme you are pushing the truth? I see evidence of Obama enthusiasm all over the place. When Gallup asked me to score my enthusiasm for voting on a scale of 1 to 10, I shouted 10! Are there really Obama voters who are saying, “I dunno, maybe a 4 or 5″. I don’t believe it.

    • October 3, 2012 at 9:34 am

Why oh why do we all continue to dissect whatever Chuck Todd says, does, intimates? We really expect a lot from these corporate slaves, don’t we! Big bucks, the Repugs and trying to play devil’s advocate is Chuck’s master. Chuck will continue to say what he says, because it gets him attention, …..and he loves it!

I say we judge Romney’s performance based on how convincingly, and with how much specificity, he backs up that one sentence — on how convincingly he demonstrates that his “economic plan will get America back to work and strengthen the middle class.” Those are his words. If he fails to persuasively back them up, little else will matter.

Here’s why. As many have noted, the pressure is on Romney, and not on Obama, to use tonight’s performance to change the basic dynamics of the race. Those dynamics are as follows: Romney does not hold an advantage on who is more trusted on the economy. Romney no longer enjoys the presumption of economic superiority based on his business background and on the fact that he represents an alternative to disappointment with Obama. Romney has failed to persuade voters to base their choice solely on their dissatisfaction with the status quo or on whether they are better off than they were four years ago.

Morning!! Happy Debate Wednesday! I found this VERY interesting little diddy over at DK…but it came from the WSJ:

A majority of voters want one party to control Congress and the White House next year, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll, a remarkable opinion shift that suggests deep frustration with Washington gridlock.

The Journal survey of registered voters, to be released in full at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on WSJ.com, found 52% want effectively one party to rule Washington, with 39% wanting a divided government. It’s the first time a majority of voters supported the idea in the Journal poll going back to the mid-1980s.

    • October 3, 2012 at 9:28 am

OMG, this is what we need to break the spell of what passes for modern “bipartisanship” as it exists today in the House and the Senate. We need a smackdown of McConnell, Cantor, Boehner and the rest of the posers and frauds.

    • 103 Nena20409
      October 3, 2012 at 9:37 am

How come Chuck Todd and Co were not talking about that? Chuck Todd finally admitted that they undersampled Dems…..but he left the impression that it was on the OH poll with pres Obama leading by 8% points. Really? Then he said that using RV, the president leads Romney nationally b 51% to 43%. But he hyped LV numbers? Yet Nothing has changed in the last 2 weeks? If people feel better about the economy and they want one party to govern in DC and there was the 47% tape hurting Romney then how come Romney is inching up in the polls? Oh yeah….his explanation is that 79% of the TBGOPers are more energized to vote and Dems ONLY 73%? But Todd never said is Dems were undersampled on this question. That is odd Todd.

KARL ROVE STILL LYING, DISTORTING AND MAKING STUFF UP

A New Kind of Democrat:Team Obama Smacks Down Karl Rove for Ignoring Reality

    By: Jason Easley

    ———————————————

When a master of dirty politics like Karl Rove is reduced to simply inventing his own statistics, things are bad. This attack ad is very un-Rovian. Where is the smear? Where’s the swiftboating? It looks like not even Karl Rove call sell Mitt Romney as a viable option, so he has been reduced to campaigning against the right’s imaginary Barack Obama.
    .
    .
The Rove ad managed to cram four lies into four sentences. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the economy has added 5,080,000 private sector jobs since February 2010. More jobs have been created than lost since Obama took office. Obama signed the Budget Control Act which will cut discretionary spending to its lowest level since 1962.

Karl Rove used to be one of the most feared men in politics. Now, the Obama campaign is smacking him around with impunity.

The mask of sanity is slipping from the GOP
Romney’s not the only one in trouble, as the GOP’s senate prospects have soured significantly as well,

A popular definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. Returning the American financial system to its unregulated pre-New Deal state and expecting everything to work perfectly would certainly qualify as insane under this definition. So, too, would Ron Paul’s “solution” of abolishing the federal reserve and returning America to the gold standard, effectively returning us to the 19th century, with its repeated pattern of financial panics, prolonged recessions and enormous concentrations of wealth. Equally insane, by this folk definition, is the path of today’s Republican Party as a whole, trying to unseat President Obama by offering America, in essence, a third term of George W Bush.

    It isn’t working.

And because it isn’t working, we’re seeing signs of increasingly bizarre behaviour on the right. Most recently, large swaths of the GOP faithful have swiftly embraced the delusional fantasy that national pollsters – even Fox News – are deliberately skewing polls to favour President Obama and the Democrats, when Romney is actually leading by more than seven points! To understand how the GOP got to this bizarre place, we need to consider a variety of different perspectives, including more technically precise ways of defining insanity and related cognitive deficits.

Yup – whatever gains they got from denouncing Todd Akin’s comments have completely disappeared after their whole-hearted embrace of his misogyny. I just don’t know how any thinking person can vote for this incarnation of the Republican party – the people who didn’t lift a finger to help the country through a recession they caused; the same people who are feverishly trying to deny people their democratic right to vote; same people who have talked about taking women’s right back 100 years and erasing Civil Rights from the map; who are re-embracing torture. Who are these people?!

      WE ARE ALL “FACT-CHECKERS” NOW

      ===============================

Stephanie Cutter is my hero. She is fierce beyond belief. The woman does not play. Mitt Romney has been lying, distorting and making stuff up from day one. Stephanie is putting him on notice big time. She is previewing the lies and distortions we are likely to hear reiterated tonight and arming everybody with the facts. Stephanie is enlisting all of us to be fact checkers. I have forwarded this video to everyone on my email list. By the way, shouldn’t all journalists, pundits and gasbags be fact checkers too?? They need to stop outsourcing fact checking and just do their jobs.

Mitt Romney has already demonstrated his disdain for the media and the voters. But tonight his pathological lying will be the focus of attention. Either he continues to lie and confirm his mendacity or he changes his tune and reenforces the flip flopper charge. And he can’t continue providing generalities about what he would do while blaming President Obama for the results of Republican Party obstruction. This has to be Mitt’s worst nightmare. Also, it’s going to be difficult to watch the debate with thinking about the comment from Ann Romney that she would be concerned about Mitt’s mental health if elected.

Good morning, Happy Wednesday Chips & all of TOD.. A Lovely & joyous Happy 20th Anniversary to President Obama & First Lady Michelle- I’ve no doubt they’ll enjoy many many more loving years together.

Do not let the bs- and it will be plentiful- get to you today. WE know the media will be working overtime to build up Romney and pull down POTUS- Fight back where applicable, but otherwise don’t let them take away what WE know will be a night where President Obama will shine. He is outstanding at his job, he is an exemplary human, a kick ass politician.. and he knows their games even better than we do… and moreover he’s had Romney’s number for some time now. So … Don’t worry because “He’s Got This”. Lets just all be there – tune in with HUGE numbers watching & supporting him. I always figure that as he can get out there day after day doing all that he does, the very least I can do is pay attention.

As for the media… keep in mind: NOBODY actually likes them ;)

Greedy assholes! Their greed is what got us into this mess!!!

    http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/10/03/946881/bankers-whine-profits-2006/

In the last four quarters, the six largest Wall Street banks have made $63 billion, the most they’ve made since 2006. Despite having pushed the nation to the brink of economic collapse, and after receiving billions of taxpayer dollars, the banks are back to where they were when the housing bubble inflating.
However, according to Bloomberg News, a return to sky-high profits isn’t enough for the banking industry, which reacted to the numbers by whining about regulation and “a backlash against bankers“:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/10/03/1139094/-BREAKING-NEWS-Romney-claimed-he-never-managed-Bain-Capital

You know how Romney claims his business experience at Bain qualifies him to be president? If an article in the Boston Globe is accurate, Mitt Romney claimed in a 2002 campaign ad that he “never managed” Bain Capital and “just invested in it.”

Why has no one picked up on this? Even the reporter missed the significance of the quote.

With about three weeks to go before the vote, O’Brien ran an ad about Bain Capital, resurrecting attacks on Romney’s role downsizing the paper company Ampad Inc. and asking voters, “Now Romney wants us to trust him with our jobs and our economy?”
“Mitt and I had talked about it a million times after the Kennedy campaign,” Manning said, referring to the attack ads Senator Edward Kennedy used so successfully against Romney in 1994. “We said, if we’re ever in a campaign again and they go after Bain Capital, we’re going to go really hard back at them.”

Romney responded with an ad that criticized O’Brien for her tenure at a failed health care company. “O’Brien is attacking Mitt Romney for a company he never managed, just invested in,” the ad began. . .

Before I go out enjoy this beauttiful day(even though it is cloudy and looks like rain) I still paln to take in the sights and sounds of NYC. For those who live here and those who visit, you know what a vibrant place this is. But I have noticed a quiet peacefulness with growing anticipation as a need, almost an urge to vote. People are expecting long lines are envious of the states who can vote early. The polls near me will open at 6:00. Some people are planning to be on line at 4:00 or 5:00. So this debate nor weather conditions will deter people who have been listening and paying attention to what is at stake here. This is different than 2008. We know more about the lies, the cheating, the $$$$ spent to make this a “one-term President.” How hard he has had to work alone.

My plans are to come back home this evening fully rejunvinated, relaxed, sit back and watch this husband/ dad/ great debator/ teacher/coummnity organizer/ President move this country FOWARD with grace, humility, class and words of wisdom.

I just want to share one thing: I have just finished studying this week Sunday School lesson and the topic is, “Courage to Speak.”
The Golden Text is from Acts 6:8 the main character is Stephen.
After reading, studying and meditating, I thought how similar tonight’s debate.

Our President is a man of faith and Stephen’s example demonstrates that a bold witness in the face of opposition comes from God as we rest our faith firmly in Him. The lesson concludes that the one who understands the dynamics of faith is the one who will find the courage to speak the truth in the face of opposition. Opposition is the work of the enemy, the devil. He will seek to undermine everything we do. God gives us the courage to speak boldly and defy the enemy. The antidote to fear in such cases is to trust God in faith. He shows us how to respond with boldness at a time when we need it most. Our words have power as God works through our faith.

Tonight, I have no doubt that our God will give his servant, this vessel the words of wisdom he will need to help take this country FORWARD where we are predestined to be and have been denied, all of us for so long.
    STAY FOCUS!

    • October 3, 2012 at 11:48 am

I’m watching because after all this time it will be so incredible to see them go toe to toe. I’m very confident POTUS will show the world what he’s got. He’s been president for nearly 4 years so he automatically speaks with authority and he beats Romney on everything that matters – superior intellect, command of the issues and the facts, extraordinary compassion, inordinately strong strategic thinker, a great record on all measures that demonstrates that he stands on his principles. AND he emanates HOPE.

I COULDN’T CARE LESS how the pathetic MSM spins it.

I understand those feelings BWD. These past few days leading up to the debate tonight have been visceral in so many ways. The rapid heart, the nausea, the insomnia…yet when I think of not being there for our President because I can’t handle it, I have to ask myself.”Do I have his back?” Even when it hurts me, will I stand with this President? He is there standing up for us, yet some of us can’t stand there with him because it hurts us. That is something I am trying to wrap my head around. Can we imagine how hard it is for Michelle to sit there and watch the lies and vitriol spewed at her husband? She will be there, she will give him her big embrace afterwards and stay and shake hands with the people in that room. Why can’t we all be there with them both, experiencing this moment with them? We each need to do what we need to do, so if some of us can’t watch….what if that was your husband, your son up there?
      Just my 2 cents.

Now I woke up this morning with the thought that we are nervous about the debate, and for a while we were hearing that Romney would make up some ground in the debate(s) because he had more recent experience in a debate situation, but really folks …. were those debates? I don’t remember during the Republican primary that very many details about the issues were forthcoming. When the 7 or 8 (or was it 20?) clowns were all standing upon stage, it was a bash each other party and then let’s all rally around and see who can bash our President the best? Remember the editorial cartoons with the clown car bulging with caricatures of Santorum, Michelle Bachmann, Newt, Romney, et al.? Remember some of the just totally outlandish things they said? Does anyone remember anything critical to domestic policy or foreign policy?

So, actually I think our President has had the upper hand in debate preparation: he has been debating this Congress, this media, and those clowns (GOP candidates) for almost two years! And getting stuff done at the same time! After remembering the “debates” from the Republican primary this morning, I don’t feel so nervous!

Good morning all. I’m late to the party but that I’d bring a little sumpin’.

    Taxi
I would like to share an experience with you about drinking and driving.
As you well know, some of us have been lucky not to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the various social sessions over the years.

A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had a few too many beers and then topped it off with a margarita. Not a good idea. Knowing full well I was at least slightly over the limit, I did something I’ve never done before: I took a taxi home.
Sure enough I passed a police road block but because it was a taxi, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise. I have never driven a taxi before and am not sure where I got it.

    Good Morning TOD

Happy 20th Anniversary to our Wonderful, Loving First Couple

    Always keep in mind that President Obama;

Risk’s more than others think is safe.
Care’s more than others think is wise.
Dream’s more than others think is practical.
    and
Expects more than others think is possible.

He is a gifted, talented, brilliant man who we have been blessed and honored to watch serve our country. All the theatrics and hype that the media has placed on this one debate tonight IMO has been sickening. Then, if you think for one moment that if Romney does not do well that they won’t move the goalpost again you just haven’t been paying attention.

This is a time when our candidates for the highest office in the land are asked to answer to the public just exactly what their policies will be for this country going forward. It is not some game or reality show but cable news and for the most part the network news is certainly treating it as if it is.

I know President Obama’s character. I’ve watched it on display since I started following him in 2007. Nobody can tell me what or how I should feel about anything he says or does (speaking directly to the cable talking heads). I am praying that his message will enter the hearts and the minds of all who hear him tonight and that the incompetence of Mitt Romney will be on full display so that the public can see for themselves that he is not the right man to lead this great country.

When the Republicans had their convention twitter drove the narrative. As much as the media wanted to portray Ryan/Romney the twitterverse would have none of it. They called out Ryan’s lies in his speech and the next day the papers followed suit and questioned just about everything he said. Then by the time cable was ready to declare that Romney gave a great convention speech, twitter was already changing the narrative with the “empty chair” meme. His speech never got the opportunity to gain any traction because the twitter brigade didn’t allow it to take hold.

It showed that we have the power to set the narrative and bring the public along with us so please #PressOn tonight and drive the narrative that PBO should be and will be re-elected this November. #FORWARD

Well good morning O folks! How’s it going on this great getting up 20th anniversary debate day? I’m trying to decide if I’m going to cook a healthy, nutritional meal to enjoy during the debate, or if I will order out and have some really over the top, high caloric, decadent meal. I must admit to leaning toward the latter. Either way, this will be a very interesting evening.

My political take today is that this debate has been pushed down our throats as if it is more important than the actual election. People who are so against the media and know it’s worthlessness, are allowing the same media pundits to make tonight’s debate cause angst and blood pressure increase before one word is even spoken. Whatever the outcome, however the media calls it, I don’t think it will change anyone’s vote, including the so-called undecideds, who are relishing in their 15 minutes of fame.

[LOL! Oh my, LOL! Sides hurting ...]:

National Review has an insider’s preview of Mitt Romney’s debate performance tonight. The preview’s upshot–this is my take, obviously, and not NR’s–is that Romney is being so overloaded by advisers and consultants with so many distinct incompatibilities and indeed human impossibilities, he’ll be lucky if he remembers his name.
