Washington Post: For Mitt Romney, it was the number that proved everything. Since the very first speech of his campaign, the Republican candidate has used a simple figure to bolster his argument that President Obama couldn’t fix the U.S. economy: 8 percent.

…. For Romney, any number above 8 percent proved he was right and Obama was wrong.

Obama had promised, Romney told audiences repeatedly, never to let unemployment get that high. Instead, Romney said, the jobless rate blew past 8 percent and got stuck there.

Until Friday.

…. It was enough to put him on the defensive …. It wasn’t because the figures showed a healthy economy — they didn’t — but because the economy had crossed a threshold that Romney had implied it would never cross without him.

NYT: …. on closer examination, the record as governor he alluded to looks considerably less burnished than Mr. Romney suggested. Bipartisanship was in short supply; Statehouse Democrats complained he variously ignored, insulted or opposed them, with intermittent charm offensives. He vetoed scores of legislative initiatives and excised budget line items a remarkable 844 times, according to the nonpartisan research group Factcheck.org. Lawmakers reciprocated by quickly overriding the vast bulk of them.

The big-ticket items that Mr. Romney proposed when he entered office in January 2003 went largely unrealized …. His promise to lure new business and create jobs in a state that had been staggered by the collapse of the 2000 dot-com boom never quite bore fruit; unemployment dropped less than a percentage point during his four years….

…. Mr. Romney proved to have a taste for vetoes, killing legislative initiatives in his first two years at more than twice the rate of his more popular Republican predecessor, William F. Weld…

Some seemed almost designed to rankle legislators: one rejected an increase in disability payments to a police officer who had slipped on an ice patch… “He seemed to take great delight in vetoing bills,” recalled his director of legislative affairs, John O’Keefe. “Some of the bills we would chuckle when we wrote the veto message.”

…. By 2004, the second year of his term, Mr. Romney was provoked enough to mount an unprecedented campaign to unseat Democratic legislators, spending $3 million in Republican Party money …. The effort failed spectacularly. Republicans lost seats, leaving them with their smallest legislative delegation since 1867…

A Word from Tally

Let me start by saying my expectation going into the debate was HOW THE HELL do you debate a toddler who insists the facts are not indeed THE FACTS?

“Did you break this lamp?”
“No.”
“You were the only one in the room.”
“I have no idea how the lamp broke.”
“Do you think it jumped off the table on it’s own?”
“Yes.”

How do you honestly debate that? You can’t. As a parent you can send the child to its room, making clear that lying and irrational behavior is unacceptable in a civilized society, and that taking responsibility for your actions is the right, moral, and mature thing to do.

How do you debate jello? Someone who changes their stance in the same sentence? It’s impossible.

Obama did not lose at all. I am completely baffled why people are making excuses, or saying he lost anything. Honestly. I guess people are distracted by optics, and have lost the art of listening and understanding English. Or just maybe, everyone’s expectations were so out of the realm of reality, that while waiting for Romney to (I have no idea really) under Obama’s facts, they missed Romney imploding and going farther into Krazzzytown where the Magic Money Tree grows and the color of the sky changes hourly under Obama’s facts and existence with the rest of us here on planet Earth.

If you honestly think President Obama lost the debate, I suggest you go back and LISTEN to just the audio. I’m dead serious. A LOT of people here on the West Coast could only listen to it on the radio while driving home and wondered WTF the pundits were smoking when they said Romney won.

Thank you Tally!

Up and at ‘em all my O’s!!! It’s a great getting up morning once again in TODville doncha know!!! The debate is in the past, poor Mitt’s supposed over the top great performance was knocked right off the chattering class charts as they moved to the newest shiny object.

My political take today is let’s keep the pressure on our GOTV efforts. We know that PBO made a record again in fund raising in September. Let’s keep it moving FORWARD!!!

Some amazing news this morning: 1,825,813 people came together to raise $181 million for this campaign in September.

Of the 1,825,813 people who donated in September, 567,000 were new to this organization—not having given before in 2008 or 2012.
Since this campaign launched in April 2011, a total of 3,922,420 people have pitched in to make it what it is.
It’s good news week for the O team folks. Let’s keep the momentum going FORWARD!!1

I am one of those new donors, as I was not a U.S. citizen in 2008. If Barack Obama had not won in 2008, I would still be a Canadian citizen today. Happily, I became one in May of 2009 and I am so glad I can give a little to him now. I can not wait for Nov 6 to cast my second vote for PBO ( my first vote for him was in the primary) . I will have my Champagne ready when he wins!

Great piece. Why we let these agenda driven mostly white male pundiots drive the narrative about the debate. Since when his lying and bully behavior to be rewarded? HuffPo had an article by Brenda Peterson about how UnfitMitt’s behavior was a turnoff for women. I much prefer the President’s low key cool intelligent approach, laying out where we’ve been, where we’re going and why.

          October 6, 2012 at 11:01 am

Absolutely spot on piece, Tally. My husband and I were discussing the debate this morning…..Romney had obviously memorized five or six rants, and he was going to get them all in!!! I think the entire Republican agenda was to provoke the President into showing anger and going after him after the debate.
Yes, Romney is a spoiled child. My grandchildren have never acted so despicably in their worst temper tantrums. He has never had anyone say NO to him, and challenge him, and he doesn ‘t know how to handle that. Also, in his world, a white male can do no wrong, and is superior to everyone else. He is just plain rude, and yes he is a sociopath.
This editorial should go to all the so-called pundits who got so mad Wednesday evening. I still say these people never listen or watch. They decide what’s going to happen before the event, and remark accordingly. They do it with all of the President’s speeches too.
How thrilling that the jobs report was so good yesterday, and the money number so exceptional today!!!
As we say, PBO plays chess, and these guys play a poor game of checkers. I’m sure those Romney operatives were chortling and laughing as they planned this ambush before the debate. Obviously, it took about three months for Romney to memorize all that junk, and it was meaningless.
Remember how the commentators were yelling that the president didn’t mention the 47%????? Now we know why. He spent the past two days trying to get attention on that, on FOX, of all places.
Congratulations Tally on an exceptional piece of insight and writing.

This is a terrific point, taiping and I did read the Peterson article. Robney was a huge turnoff to women. He was every abusive, pushy boyfriend any woman has ever had. Truly sickening.

Great piece Tally. I always trust my own eyes and ears more than I trust what some “expert” tells me. There is no way an objective viewing of that debate should have lead to the irrational shitstorm of criticism directed at PBO by his supporters. PBO did not fall into the GOP/MSM trap, but some of us sure as hell did.

        October 6, 2012 at 11:10 am

Tally, thank you. I totally agree with you. As I watched, I thought Romney (the piece of shit) was on something as well. He was ready to pounce, was disrespectful, and aggressive. PBO explained his policies in a calm and precise manner. In my opinion, Romney (the piece of shit) was all over the place and I believe that he’s mental! Hands down, I thought that PBO was the winner. We know that PBO walks softly, but carries a whopper of stick. Thanks again.

Agree, Wiltal. Thanks to the media, we’ve been living in an alternate universe the last few days. Tally nailed it on the head. Romney was scarily hyped up and so obviously lying it was comical. It truly was one of those WTF moments when he started saying the exact opposite of everything he’s stood for throughout his campaign. That the president kept his cool and stuck to the facts throughout is evidence of his superiority as a leader and a human being. And he demonstrated respect and class in his treatment of Lehrer. The one thing the Romneys–father, mother and sons–have demonstrated in this whole process is a total lack of class.

Also, we need to spread messages such as this cartoon far and wide.

Informed liberals like information and facts. And often make the mistake of thinking that ideas are most salient in politics. But they’re not. Not at the level of the population-at-large. Emotions and identity are vastly more powerful. That is simply how the human brain operates. The nonverbal messages are more powerful than the words that are spoken.

For the vast majority of the citizenry, it is the old brain that votes – not the rational, new brain. Liberals cannot understand why people “vote against their own interests” — meaning the interests liberals think they SHOULD have. Republicans have been utilizing brain science more effectively than Democrats for decades. Reagan’s advertising guru was the first ever to be awarded the nation’s highest advertising award the year after the election — for selling a presidential candidate rather than a soap or a car.

Unfortunately, Bob, the message many “got” was that Romney was dominant and PBO was submissive. About 68 million tuned in – on television and online. And many hadn’t paid much attention yet. What they knew about the political season was what they had heard on television and radio.

Here we have the politically obsessed!! But many others don’t have the information we have. I have been deeply sobered this week to hear from many who watched the debate, but had not heard that PBO was in Wisconsin, our home state, the next day!!! One would think they lived in their own bubbles. And, in a sense, that is correct. They’re consumed with work, their childrens’ and grandchildrens’ activities, etc. They simply don’t tune in as we do. Yet they’re receiving Republican mailings three times a week! I just got a three-page letter from Romney yesterday. Certainly, he can’t think I am voting for him.

What those traveling by our property on the very busy four-lane highway 29 across northern Wisconsin do see is a 4′ x 8′ highway sign for Obama-Biden!! Our property is on a curve where a sign can be seen by both east-bound and west-bound traffic — in a rural area where it cannot be missed! It’s one of the tri-county Dems’ favorite sites for a big sign. Though there is still a fair amount of tea-party fervor here, our three counties will quite likely go for PBO. Biden’s visit to Eau Claire did receive a lot of local press. The Madison rally didnt. News-wise and business-wise we are more connected with Minneapolis-St. Paul than with Madison.

I have to agree with you that visually, President Obama looked down too much, which was highlighted by the split screen. But you know what? Even if President Obama “lost” the first debate, there are two more coming down the line and I truly believe he’ll come out swinging for those ones. I just don’t believe this first debate has hurt the President at all.

Best course is to brag, brag about all those considerable achievements in just 4 yrs. We know that this is the biggest haul in one month during this year’s campaign, but does anyone recall what the biggest month total was for the President’s ’08 campaign? Just wondering?
The most important number of all in this data, is the half million NEW donors. I certainly hope that all translates into new votes too!!

Here the thing about the debates, I suspect it did increase Mittens support among his base. I understand he’s already seen increased fundraising and allegedly volunteering (ill believe that when I see evidence), but in an aggregate of local news headlines in swing states, the front page news as of Friday had Hugh headlines about the job rates & unemployment, which pushed Romney debate performance off the front page and just in time for the fact checking headlines to begin.
Also I read somewhere that Obama was NOT happy with his debate performance. The advisor said don’t expect to see the same Obama from the first debate again. One thing we know about Obams is that he is very competitive (Kobe Bryant talked about playing basketball with the Prez & saying Obama can trash talk with the best of ‘em & plays hard to win) &i suspect he will not let another debate like the last one happen again.

Lets do ourselves a favor ignore the national polls for awhile and focus on swing states and GOTV volunteering. It will keep the worrywarts sane and the rational one from wanting to kill the worrywarts

“Also I read somewhere that Obama was NOT happy with his debate performance”

      October 6, 2012 at 12:27 pm

“&i suspect he will not let another debate like the last one happen again.”

well of course he won’t, because he clearly has a strategy and he was following his plan in the first debate. it’s fine to have differing opinions of course, but when you see so many people here and elsewhere suggest that we’re seeing a simple game of rope-a-dope, and see how things are playing out now a couple days later, are you sure your opinion that president obama didn’t do that well in the debate isn’t being influenced the media spin?

when you look at president obama’s life and where he came from to where he is now, and how he beat the “inevitable” clinton machine, then the p.o.w. mccain train, and reduces donald chump to a laughing stock (probably forever now) right to his face live on national tv while at the exact same moment is secretly controlling the effort to kill bin laden…do you seriously think president obama was flustered by the mittbot…MITT RMONEY?!? even after this latest debate, and look at all the various debates our president has had since the democratic primaries in 2007, i still suggest the mittbot is probably his easiest debate opponent in his whole “presidential career.” i think most people here could’ve had an easy time attacking the lies of the mittbot in that debate and getting him flustered, yet president obama chose not to come after him. he’s got a plan, and a fairly simple one (rope-a-dope) and he’s following it. my 2 cents anyway…

      • 154 EricFive
        October 6, 2012 at 2:01 pm

THIS!!! Some people refuse to understand strategy. There are THREE debates not one. PBO let Mitt show himself to be a degenerate liar and created a chorus of people wanting him to call Mitt out on his lies. This sets the stage for the next two debates.

My Dad died shortly after casting his Primary ’08 vote for Barack Obama (the only thing he voted on while in a nursing home right after a stroke). He had pretty much voted as a Republican most of his life. I had spent almost 6 months trying to convince him to look at BHO and took articles over to read to him daily about him. He finally decided he liked him due to his civility, respectful ways, and the fact that he made it by hard work. He would not have thought he needed to knock out Romney in this debate.

    Enthusiasm gap? What enthusiasm gap?

President Obama’s campaign and Democratic allies raised a record $181 million in September, his campaign manager said today….The Obama campaign manager said the average donation was $53, with 98% of the contributions at $250 or less.

In the end, I wonder if the Republican focus on Super PACs will end up hurting them? Team Blue might be raising a bit less money overall than Team Red, but the Obama campaign is raising more than the Romney campaign. If you’re Karl Rove, I suppose you might argue that Super PACs have more freedom to launch nasty (but effective) attack ads than the campaigns themselves, so it’s a good thing that a big chunk of conservative money is going to Crossroads GPS and their ilk. If you’re Jim Messina, you’ll probably argue that, in the end, it’s better to have most of your money under central control, where you can use it precisely the way you need to.

I have no idea which is the better argument. Either way, though, Obama certainly doesn’t seem to be having any big problem raising money from the folks who supported him in 2008. I continue to think that Mitt Romney lost a real chance to eat into that support when he decided last spring that he had to continue placating the tea partiers instead of immediately moving to the center.

Awesome read Tally. The only losers of the debate was the MSM, Mitt and the political pundits. I watched 16 minutes of Rachel Maddow trip threw history about 1st Presidential debates and no where did she or any pundits provide guide lines by which they measure winners or losers of debates other than their opinions; opinions that they all being paid to have. Opinions aren’t committed to the truth; that is why Mitt won in their opinion because it was not being measured by facts.

If you play a sport or follow a team we know the team that wins most often; is one that stays focus and is not distracted by their emotions or the lose of 1 game (ups and downs)…President Obama is committed to winning this election for the American people not personal satisfaction and that is why he and the American people won the debate on Wednesday night.

I think we also should not over look what Dems and many on the left did too. They were on the web, using tech media in really time shouting and screaming their disappointments and how the president’s performance horrified them. That did more damage and gave the story more than it should have. Media has been doing their best to belittle this president. But it has NOT worked. What hurts are when we as supporters are the agitators and the instigators. The pundits opined after the debate. We started using weak, disappointed and all sorts of bat poop immediately. So should WE not first look ourselves in the mirror and cure ourselves before we blame the Media……who we know what and how they were going to behave anyway?

Like any sport fan or spectator would express their disappointment at the unfairness of the referee for not calling out the other side for cheating or elbowing their favourite player it doesn’t mean that those fans are going to automatically change sides and start rooting for the other side.

The most important thing for your team is the coaching staff, the quarterback, the defence and the star running back…you know the ones wearing the uniform the ones you are counting on to win the big trophy; that they remain focus and not start fighting with the referee every time the other side doesn’t play by the same rule or cheat.

President Obama has said numerous times before the debate about levelling the playing field for all Americans; that everyone play by the same rules…by playing smart President Obama allowed Romney to bring his word to life before 60+ million Americans…that Mitt is not for a level playing field or playing by the same set of rules (bully, lie, cheat–consistent qualities)….Mitt solidified his character on Wednesday night before the American People as well as World Leaders as a cheater, flip flopper and a liar; it doesn’t matter if the media or pundits call him a winner…because if you ask the media why? they will have to add; will… because Mitt bullied the moderator and his lies went unchallenged by President Obama lol it still comes back to Mitt-the-liar-Romney narrative and I wouldn’t call that winning.

Spot on Nena. It was almost like they got marching orders to spread doom and gloom. Many of them were using RW talking points. It was bizarre to say the least. What service to the campaign did they think they were making by trashing PBO and buying into the meme that “Mitt won” despite (or maybe because) of his constant lying. Maybe I’m paranoid, but I wonder sometimes.

      • 188 Walking_on_ Sunshine
        October 6, 2012 at 4:04 pm

Agreed. The #1 reason the Republicans have been successful in winning elections is because they never admit an error. They never concede defeat. They deny facts or make up fictions in order to win. Democrats are wired differently. But the freak out was so counter-productive. I think the Republican strategists were counting on us lefties to do exactly what we did. I said nothing negative about the President that night and I won’t say anything negative no matter what. We need to say the President won next time no matter what happens. If Mitt turns out more lies next time and people fall for it we need to call him a liar, not hold the President responsible for Mittens lies. You could not possibly get a less appealing candidate than Romney but the Republicans will support him no matter what. Even if they don’t actually like him. We should be able to do the same, especially for a President that we actually love. Perception is often more important than reality and we are a major part of that perception for the average person who doesn’t follow politics.
Ladies, don’t get upset about what your guys think. A lot of men only really see this as a verbal fist fight. A large part of the male population would chose the President like in “The Hunger Games”. I believe (sorry intelligent Dem guys, I know you are smarter than this) the dual to the death method of choosing a leader is a part of the male psyche.

Though the campaign spent months discouraging talk that the Obama Victory Fund would raise $1 billion, the effort is close. By the end of August, Obama had raised $766 million and September’s contributions bring that total to $947 million.

“Day in and day out, what gives the president confidence and inspiration is knowing that you have his back — that matters. We’re all going to do the best we can over next 31 days to honor that support,” campaign manager Jim Messina wrote in an email to supporters.

As Messina’s message went out, Obama campaign announced the September numbers on Twitter, calling the total “[s]ome amazing news.” In all, 1,825,813 people gave during the month, including 567,000 who had not previously contributed to Obama in 2008 or 2012. The average contribution was $53, and 98 percent of all contributions were of $250 or less.

September included the prime fundraising week of the Democratic National Convention, when donors new and old flocked to the campaign.

The Romney campaign has not yet announced its September fundraising total.

The cheering stopped on Mitt Romney’s campaign plane Friday morning.

The day before, aides had whistled and clapped when the Denver control tower commended the Republican presidential nominee’s debate performance. It was a rare moment of exuberance for a campaign that had fallen behind President Barack Obama in a number of polls.

The euphoria ended after the morning report that the nation’s unemployment rate had dropped to 7.8 percent, its lowest level in Obama’s presidency. Romney and his team sat stone-faced and quiet on the flight to Virginia’s coal country, taking in the good news for the country that’s bad news for their political prospects.

We have to crush them all. No question.

    Chelsea! Chelsea! Chelsea!

Popping in for a bit to read the goodies and share my tale of woe.

Spousal unit gets a call at 3 a.m. It’s her nurse who’s supposed to work a double shift today. She can’t make it because her son is in the ER with internal bleeding. So wifey has to work her shift, since she’s in charge and the only one available.

Sucks, but not awful. Well, here’s the awful part. As you all know, she’s obese, and one of her maladies is that her legs don’t get enough circulation. If, say, a cat scratches her down around her shin, she starts to seep and could get infected. Well, a cat scratched her, and she’s seeping. So she’s at work, doing nursing duty, which means she’s on her feet most of the day, with a seeping leg.

Now, I’m working this entire weekend. Or at least I was. I may have to beg off working our booth at our local fair tomorrow if I have to take her to the ER so that she can get a scrip for antibiotics. I was really looking forward to it, as it was easy overtime.

Fortunately, our doggie daycare queen is literally an angel. Called her at 7, and she was at my house at 7.15 to pick up Stewie the wonderpup. She just loves that dog, and we love her.

Ok, back to things political. Thanks for listening to my tale of woe.

Bless my heart. I am a strong supporter of President Obama and have already voted for him. President Obama still should have said something about some of Romney’s lies. People are here canvassing, making sure people are registered donating money and holding 4000 debate watch parties. He should have tried a little harder with 67 million people watching. I am glad he raised over 180 million and I know he realizes how much people need him to win.
