He looks depressed.
I bet he had a lousy dinner last night with his unhappy wife.
He really looks devastated by the “outrage” of his debate performance.
He looks so “old” and out of shape…..
Yes, he could be Romney’s Mexico-dwellin’ grandfather.
Sources are telling me that he’s real pissed about everyone and every goddamn thing under the sun..
I’m very good at reading body language and his tells me he will decide to not run for reelection and have Hillary run in his place.
I expect to see a press conference on this by Tuesday.
Yes, and Joe Biden will step aside so they can find someone who can “deal with the Senate” better. Heard that.
NO dust gathers under his feet.
He looks so old and defeated.
Yes, the thumbs up sign is just to throw us all off.
Did anyone else feel that the Sunday shows fell flat today? Maybe they’re anti-climatic after all the hoopla from the debates and polls and unemployment numbers. They just seemed meh to me.
I don’t watch them, but they’ve probably exhausted themselves. The next debate they’ll be unbearable. The good news is, Crowley won’t be asking questions. PBO thrives in townhall format. And for the third debate, Romney is disastrous on foreign policy.
But CollegeKay, Crowley would have selected the questions before hand……those who would be asking questions. And she can have a follow Up. So that is a problem……Crowley said before she took the Sunday show job on TeaNN that it was NOT her job to point out who was lying. Now she is going to be a moderator and Mittens…..a habitual serial lying bishop is one of the participants?
That’s why he is giving a foreign policy speech Monday slamming the President on Libya.
It’s all about leverage.
Of course, the media will eat this up.
I think it fell flat for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the unemployment numbers – which the MSM had long been touting as the sole or most important determinant in this year’s election. Romney’s talking point of 8% has been destroyed, and so has the media’s.
Then the Obama camp has successfully diminished the impact of the MSM’s braying about Romney’s “great” debate performance by highlighting Romney’s egregious lies in a series of web and TV ads and in Obama’s well-attended rallies immediately following the debates.
I also believe that the polls have not really changed in Romney’s favor as we’ve been led to believe from the series of Republican push-polls in the first 24-48 hrs after the debates. The media probably knows that too – even though they will pretend that Romney is gaining momentum.
In normal times, the 7.8% unemployment would merit a yawn and 15 seconds on the news. But Willard has been running on the mythical promise to get it below 8 percent and this is not good news for him. Another blow is the rwnj’s going berserk about it. It meant it led on the evening news and now everyone knows it’s below 8 percent.
One thing I have been concerned about is all of the talk that PBO will “get” Romney next time or else…. If people have noticed at all it is a townhall setting for the next Presidential Debate. To me that means PBO will be answering questions from the audience directly. I don’t think that format gives him room to attack and refute the past debate lies. He may be able to weave some into his answers but to address them all would mean he would not be answering the audience’s questions. I just wish the critics would let Obama be Obama and do it his own way.
Townhall setting is more favorable to the President, this format is much more to his liking, he will feel more comfortable.
Also Romney won’t be able to take over the debate in a Townhall setting, he will have to answer the questions that are presented to him. If he tries to take over he will look like a fool.
If he stands still for five minutes, he looks like a fool. There’s that.
Jacquelineoboomer, you took the words right out of my mouth. Thank you.HZ
Crowley selects the people and therefore their questions. She is also allowed to follow up. She knows the questions ahead of time. These are NOT spontaneous questions for Candy Crowley. Critics will not Let pres Obama be…..they thrive to come down on him for pres Obama doesn’t have much for them to chew on. So if pres Obama makes a gaffe….reel or real, the media is on it. If pres Obama doesn’t PERFORM as they had expected….well there is an over reaction. We as the president’s supporters did the same thing let alone the media that are Not Supporters.
Romney will get a big say in who gets to sit there just as he did during the townhall in Florida. It shouldn’t be contrived but somehow it is.
I agree. The so-called left pundits did as much harm if not more than the rightwing nut jobs. IMO, Indies are and have thought every time left puts hair on fire, that if the left feels this way about the President why should they support him. Most of the left in the media make me sick. They are not REALLY supporters and they try and take down the President every time they think he has had a misstep.
I agree. By Saturday they should have moved on, particularly after encouraging jobs numbers and Romney’s lies. But no — I heard Debate Bashing on Saturday, too. Disgraceful behavior. Most of msnbc is dead to me right now. Tweety, Ed and Rachel have lost my little contribution to their ratings. It was one thing to be naive in 2010 but there is no excuse now.
That is so true Nena20409. I couldn’t believe how we the President’s supporters were so eager to join the pundits during the debate. If we had come out strong in PBO defense pointing out all the different positions that Romney has taken that it is not easy to know which lie you are supposed to refute before he says that is not his position!
I agree. No need to set expectations beforehand. Also don’t think that Crowley won’t be able to interject herself in this format. All she has to do is, follow up the person’s question. Example:
Person: Mr. President, what is your plan for the next four years
PBO: Gives his answer
Crowley: Mr. President, but how does that bring down the deficit, pay off the debt, or assure us that you will work across the aisle to keep that promise?
Pretty simple to do. I wouldn’t get too comfortable thinking she won’t do something like that. Who wants to just hold a mike for folks like some game show host? I don’t agree with anything she says, but isn’t it telling the role of the only woman in the debates is relegated to that of being seen and not heard?
there is no way that Crowley isn’t going to do her damnedest to trip up PBO. However, her snideness is well-documented and PBO will be prepared.
Obama Grandma – you’ve said a mouthful there. I’ve been thinking the same thing. Everyone is setting the standard again for President Obama, regardless of who he has shown himself to be. He takes this job seriously, and he wants to provide information to the American people. He’s not interested in scoring points, but in getting people to honestly evaluate the two options in front of them. A lot of people aren’t even thinking about the day after the election, or more importantly, 12:01 pm on Jan 20, 2013 – when one of those two men will be the President. They’re not thinking about what life will be like if they let the entertainment quotient be the determinant for the election. It’s not like President Obama wins or loses. I’ts that EITHER President Obama wins, or Romney wins. The media may want to make this a referendum on President Obama, bu tit isn’t. It’s an election of one of the two men. And if President Obama doesn’t win, then Romney wins.
As for this nonsense of setting an expectation that President Obama will roast Romney at the next debate – I’m not sure that’s going to happen. I have no idea how President Obama is going to react or behave or prepare, but I know that whatever it is that he does, he will be trying to make the debate more than just a spectacle. And I’m going to be fine with whatever he does in the debate, because he’s been consistent as far back as the oldest video I’ve seen of him when he was still in college. He’s been steady about his love for the country, his hopes for the future of this country and its people, his determination to do his best – always, and his ability to think long term – to see the forest for the trees. Romney is still offering the wrong solution for America. President Obama is still the only one to move this country forward. That’s all that matters to me.
Afternoon, and thank you so much, Theo, for expressing my thoughts so well. I particularly appreciate how you stated my position in paragraph two. ;) ;) So how are you? I’m only now rolling in to the village and can only stay for a short period. Don’t faint …can you believe I was actually baking this morning? I can’t! Made cheese cake ‘from scratch’, something I have literally not done in YEARS, and tossed a frozen apple pie! I don’t know WHAT possessed me!
So impressive, VC! I hope you’ve got some lovely plans for this Thanksgiving weekend. I’m still trying to convince myself to do the work I brought home on Friday that needs to be done by tomorrow morning – I’m here, instead… :)
That cheesecake sounds delicious!
 Thank you, T! It had better taste good, after all that ‘work’! I’m heading out in about 20-30 minutes to dinner, hence the baking. I kept thinking of Meta throughout the morning and wishing she delivered out of state/country but couldn’t take the time to come seek her out in case she didn’t. I don’t doubt I’ll have a good time once I get there, however I would rather be catching up here in TODville, so we’ll see how long I’ll last before the withdrawal symptoms start. ;)
BTW, do you get Monday off too, or does that ‘by tomorrow’ means you have to go in? I mean, doesn’t the boss take into consideration that you are also Canadian and NEED to participate in both Am. & Cdn. thanksgiving?
No consideration for Canadians at work, I’m afraid. They think we’re all socialists… Have a lovely time tonight!
Well said Theo! My bottom line is: I will never praise a serial liar, no matter how aggressive he/she might be in telling lies. My role is to vote for a President who articulates an agenda that I consider beneficial to the vast majorities of Americans. My role as a voter is not to select the most fast talking con man who lies all the time.
Indeed – after we’ve been graced to have President Obama as President, how could we lower our standards to embrace someone of such low character and lacking in integrity as Mitt Romney. A liar deserves no respect.
Good point. I’ve been thinking along those same lines.
Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadian TOD Obama lovers!
Oh thanks and same to you. ‘Happy gobble gobble’ as my friends would say.
Happy Thanksgiving!! It’s so early this year.
And to you as we’, Canadabarb.
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all Canadians, former like me, and current ones on this blog.
Speaking of West.
Some one asked me y’day about who would win the T-20 cricket world championship (not for you americans, you will never get it).
I predicted West Indies 51 to 49%.
Well, whatdayaknow. West Indies it is. They won by 36 runs about a minute back.
For those who are pissed off at my ‘not for you americans’ crack.
Cricket explained to an American
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out, he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.
When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in, goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out, try to get him out, and when he is out, he goes in and the next man in, goes out and goes in.
There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.
End of Lesson
This is 100% true. I am not kidding. Ask any brit. (no, Chips doesn’t count, she is irish)
On that cheerful note, gunnite folks.
The Irish boycott cricket out of pride.
Clear and concise. I call it a baseball ground game having grown up in Canada living in England for four years but married to a Jamaican. Cheers to the WI team!
Amk..finally the West Indies did it. I really thought that we were not going to make it ,but Sri Lanka folded.
Big-up congatulations to the West Indies. The party has started!
Hi Ladyjazz. This is wonderful! What part of Trinidad are you from?
Not to mention the googlies.
Amk, as a West Indian myself, I had to come out of lurking to thank you for your succinctly explaining how the game of cricket is played. Truly, you can’t break it down any finer than that.
Now if you can simplify the Duckworth-Lewis method (yes Americans, we’re still on cricket), I’d say you’re right up there with Ramanujan and Einstein.
You do know that what amk explained is on a poster. Try and source it.
Good morning TOD,, have a great Sunday. Didn’t watch any media “talk shows/entertainment political shows this morning, thank goodness, didn’t want to harm my tv. How do you guys stand those people?
Every once in awhile, you get a nugget. Digging for gold has never been easy.
Of course, MSNBainC did not like this…
NBC tells Obama not to use footage
By DYLAN BYERS | 10/6/12 1:47 PM
In a letter sent Friday night to Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, NBC told the Obama campaign to cease using network footage in a new 30-second spot, released shortly after Wednesday’s debate, in which Andrea Mitchell is shown on air citing an independent study stating that Mitt Romney’s tax plan would cost $4.8 trillion over 10 years, a source said.
If she considers herself ‘news’ it’s fair game. Let’s bombard NBC and ask what they are afraid of
Yes, NBC wouldn’t want to give the impression that they report “independent studies” that make Mitt look bad!
of course the fact that it is mrs greenspan ( a republican and member of the 1%) and that nbc has connections to GE and that scumbag welch are reason enough to get them to interject in PBO’s message content.
When I saw that ad – the first thing I thought was that Andrea Mitchell is not going to be happy about this. Sure enough…
As LunarSea said, if you’re part of the media your words will be cited in ads for better or worse.
ignore them and air it anyway.
The obvious question is, Why? The campaign has a right to expect an answer. Has NBC made it a practice to restrict any and all uses of their telecasts in ads?
Morning all. It’s a chilly but beautifully, colorful day in new England. Looking forward to gathering round the dinner table w/good friends, food & spirits.
Have been trying to catch up and must say I really enjoyed the discussionon the previous thread on why people support this Pres and how that makes them feel.
So yeah, have a good day all. Will be popping in and out periodically checking to see that you all are *ahem* behaving yourselves. Lol what ever that means.
My take away from the above pics of PBO is it was a good night celebrating their anniversary. ‘Nuff said. #forward—>Obama/Biden2012
Awwwhhh ChipsChica rescued me. *waving frantically* Thanks ChipsChica
He looks so old and defeated and devastated. That’s why he’s flashing that gorgeous smile.
Head West young man and get that KA-CHING! :D
Mark Knoller bolted out of bed this morning to tell us that PBO was going to be fundraising one day after announcing he had raised $181M in September…
Knoller is pissed off that Pres. Obama is close to being the first billion dollar fundraising President. Pres. Obama has now raised over $835M for the 2012 elections, shattering all other Presidents records and his own 2008 record of over $500M.
…And more small individual grassroots donors than any president – with 10M just this year alone. I can see why Knoller would be pissed.
OMG!! How dare he do something so terrible as fund raising! Mark should go back to bed.
‘ Knoller BOLTED out of bed’
Now Hf, did you see this for yourself, or did Mitt tell you so? Somehow *I* cannot form a mental picture of the first words in your statement. :???: ;)
Uggghhh I can never remember how my name is spelled out when I’m on android. I wish it would remember for me like my desktop and laptop computers :-) well I’ll just sit here and wait to be rescued by our illustrious leader once again.
And yes it’s still a beautiful day . So there Goddess Gotcha! hehehe
Maybe this is how it’s written….. time will tell
Okay so I did say good morning and leave a comment before this but again forgot how to spell my name so it’s awaiting moderation. Second time’s the charm lol
Pres 49% and Romney 46%….Tracking. Gallup is Right leaning. Folks stop hanging on to these polls.
But but but PPP said that baseball is more liked than football in east Oshkosh Wisconsin. I think that is invaluable information and…
The important thing is, the number held steady. that means the DimMitt bounce is all but over.
A total of 233,626 ballots have been returned in all states and localities for which I have statistics.
CALIFORNIA reports 709 returned ballots as of Friday evening (37 counties reporting)
FLORIDA 5 counties report 10,056 returned ballots as of Friday.
IOWA reports 110,675 returned ballots as of Friday morning.
KENTUCKY reports 1,567 returned ballots as of Monday.
MAINE reports 48 returned ballots as of Monday morning.
NEBRASKA reports 68,792 ballots sent as of Wednesday.
NORTH CAROLINA reports 29,087 returned ballots as of Sunday morning (now all counties reporting).
OHIO 50 counties report 45,296 returned ballots as of (mostly) Saturday morning. (I have updated nearly all counties based on the currently available reports. Some counties have obviously not updated their files since their reported numbers have not changed since Wednesday.)
NORTH DAKOTA reports 3,794 returned ballots as of Saturday evening.
SOUTH CAROLINA reports 10,827 returned ballots as of Thursday evening.
SOUTH DAKOTA reports 10,584 returned ballots as of Saturday morning.
I got in a conversation with a co-worker on Wednesday, a divorced, single Filipino Mother who had just received her citizenship this year, who told me she was going to watch the debate and decide who she was going to vote for….Talked to her yesterday and asked her had she reached her decision? Answer……”Yes, I am voting for PBO”…I asked her what made her decide?….she said, “That Romney man was an arrogant bully and PBO looked like he was so angry but was able to hold on to control to keep from actually walking across the stage and hitting him…I figured someone who had that much strength of control was who I wanted representing me.”….Thought I would share that observation from someone who does not keep up with the election as we do….Later, another co-worker joined the conversation, a middle aged married AA Mother and all I could think was….Here we are, an old white, Southern Grandmother, a middle aged AA Mother, and a single, new citizen, filipino Mother enjoying our support for PBO….and the consensus of the reason we support him was not women issues b/c they were all over the place, or the economy, that too was all over the place but it was b/c we TRUST him.
That runs along the vein of ‘who would you rather have a bear with?’ and why Robme’s low likability rating is so bothersome for the neocons
I live in Canada but I’m not interested in having a bear with anyone!!
lol that’s typing on android for you. I spend way to much time changing their suggestions back to what I really want to type. It takes forever to post anything.
anywhoo…the word is beer! I’m on laptop for a hot minute before heading back down to dinner guests.
Awesome! I have two co-workers who saw some of the debate but don’t follow politics (Only watched because I talked about watching the debate). They were joking about Romney’s physical movements. A third co-worker was very disappointed and started flicking off MSM talking points. She watches cable news. Too much.
I’ve heard this from a few ‘undecideds’ who watched the debate.
TRUST is the word to carry us through the next month.
Kathryn–I’ve said since last Wednesday that women would see a different picture than the ones the white male pundits were painting. All I saw was a repulsively lying man, hyped up on some kind of spiked adrenalin. He no more looked like a president than the crazy used car salesman that used to be on local NY channels when I was a kid.
Holy @#$balls TOD Peeps! Just found out that I’m going to get to go to the President’s concert fundraiser tonight at Nokia theatre with Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, and and and I can’t remember who else! O. M. F. G. An extra ticket just popped up from someone who couldn’t make it and I just got an email from a campaign team member. I’m just screaming here at my computer. WHOOOOT! Hopefully I’ll be close enough to take some pix that are recognizable of the Pres and others. Will give a full report after the event. WHOOOOT!!
Doing a happy dance for you! wooot hoot. *dancing around and singing* She’s going to the ball, she’s going to the ball…
In the words of our illustrious VP Joe, ‘now that’s a BFD!’
Oh cookemom, I love you. You just gave me an extra pill for this gut of mine. Just ate and decided to come back and relax and read here at the blog.
So elated for purpleshoes. Yes, cookemon, you said it for me.((((((( Love you))))))HZ
Omg purpleshoes…Have an amazing time.
While you’re there taking it all in, think of all of your TOD peeps.
It’ll almost feel like we were there:)
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! Have great fun and come back and tell us all about your incredible evening:) You KNOW we want to know!!
Have a terrific time, Purple and report ALL!!!
So jealous as I am a half hour away. Sigh. I know you will have a great time.
whoa!!!!!! you gotta tell us ALL about it when you come home!!!! w00t! :D
Go purpleshoes! Way cool! Have fun!
Just wanted to inform my TOD Family that we Cali., family members ordered the best weather today because we knew that POTUS would be coming south first. Lovely day just for POTUS.
Purpleshoes, can you please give up close and tell POB how much TOD loves him. He knows, but I thought that thumb’s up was really for the TOD family and especially the Cali., family members.
Just knowing that his sweet spirit is amongst all of us here is a pleasure. We love you, Mr. President.HZ
Okay, I finally caught up with PurpleShoes’ news and I’m severely close to fainting, in a highly dramatic way. I want to be big about this and say I’m massively enormously happy for PS, but I’m so intensely jealous, I’m struggling. :-) PurpleShoes – have the very BEST night of your life, I’m ecstatic for ya!!!
Hey Chips. Just got back to my computer to check in, and wanted to thank you for that MOST EXCELLENT photo after my 1st in this morning’s Rise and Shine. Whew!!! I need a moment. And perhaps that cold shower:)
Grace I gladly accepted the award on your behalf, seeing you couldn’t make it to the ceremony. And as you can see I needed a cold shower shortly after accepting…
Thanks hf. You had my back:)
Stop listening to the fear-mongers who only want to divide & conquer. We're better than that. http://t.co/9pOUn4h3— RC deWinter (@RCdeWinter) October 05, 2012
Wow powerful. Gonna retweet bbl
Couldn’t find it but found other good ones. Oh well…
Excellent, I’m sharing!
totally cool RT’ing!!
WAS LISTENING TO CANDY CROWLEY EARLIER ON CNN…SHE’S GOING TO BE A REAL PAIN AS A DEBATE MODERATOR BECAUSE SHE SHOWS SUCH PARTIALITY TOWARDS MITTENS. GOING TO HAVE TO BE READY FOR THAT!…:(
Absolutely. She is a rightwing tool.
Well then, PBO won’t have to be concerned for her as he was for Jim Lehrer. I honestly think he felt sorry for Lehrer and tried to help him. If Crowley comes off like too much of an attack dog, she’s will turn people off. People don’t want a “debate” to be about the moderator’s ego.
If I’m PBO, I would be dreading these debates, not because he doesn’t do well, or as some have described as lacking, but because they’re such a necessary nuisance. He has better things to do, like that small detail of performing the duties of the office of the President. He has to campaign, he has to stroke his hair on fire supporters, and he has to remain a global leader. Keep in mind, he has to do all of that, plus hold his Kenyan Muslim Secret Society of the Socialist meetings at the same time.
Yeah – those secret meetings are probably he most fun (and most sane) part of his days… :)

Boycott MSNBC. Watch VP debate on C-span or the Obama Biden 2012 livestream at livestream.com/barackobama— (@LiberalPhenom) October 07, 2012
I don’t agree and if I participated by tweeting I would fight against that. And here is why. Many of Us were on twitter REAL Time trashing pres Obama last Wednesday. We contributed to the over reaction. Now we blame those who were Never truly with the pres as the culprit?
We Take Care of Our OWN the Boss’ song says. But whenever this pres some how, disappoints, doesn’t meet our expectation, or is not doing exactly as we wanted who are the loudest to SCREAM? On this site, we did that. I read what went on. I was so sad that I could not sleep. I finally made my comment the next day. We have to be first and foremost HONEST with ourselves. I am not trying to pick a fight with anyone. But our contribution to the over-reaction can Not be diminished.
I agree that this site what a fucking mess last Wednesday. It went from a lion to chickenlittle in minutes. Just look back – I was disappointed with many here, not with our President.
I hear what you are saying to a degree. I was commenting real time on twitter last debate and focused all my outrage solely on willards lying. Was surprised to see others focusing on pbo. You can check my timeline. I wish that is what more people do next time around.
The media is already setting the watch for biden gaffs narrative. Telling you what to focus on before hand. We must be ready with foreign policy facts and scream them loud and clear when lies are presented with no correction from the rack moderator.
I was Not say that all of Us who were Tweeting were doing that. I am sorry. Just the majority of the president’s supporters did. I am only saying that we all need to be careful of what we are doing so we are not in any shape or form helping those who want this president to Fail. That is all I am saying. God Forbid…..should a different Romney show up next week…..Let Us not give the media and the right An Inch.
I know I replied under you but was not taking what you said as anything personal. Just keeping the convoy going. :-)
I know. I have a tendency to over explain myself…especially in a forum where I am not well known. I am sorry.
Actually, I have to disagree. There were some who freaked out – and I don’t completely blame them. I missed most of the freak out after the debate, because I was on twitter and also watching parts of the debate when I wasn’t muting Romney’s lies. What I know of the majority of the people on this site is that they are staunch supporters of President Obama. They volunteer, work hard for the campaign in different capacities and they adore President Obama because of who he is – not how he performs. I think some of the freak-out that happened is because people are desperately afraid that the GOP, media and Romney’s duplicity could end up winning the election and ushering in a future that will be devastating for millions around the world. It’s happened before – and we can’t underestimate the corruption in the election process. I’m not excusing the freak-out, but I do think that some of it was simply panic.
After enduring years of abuse towards the President, it’s understandable that people are on edge and easy to panic. That’s not to say that there aren’t some fickle supporters or even instigators in the midst. But I certainly think that advising people to ignore the media and watch the next debates on CSpan or barackobama.com is the best advice we can give to every person who hopes for a better future. There is nothing to be gained by watching CNN or MSNBC – they have their own profit agendas and are woefully and willfully uninformed about what’s really important in this election.
I agree with you that there was an over-reaction to the debates and widespread panic. It was disappointing. But, we can’t turn on those who are legitimately afraid and prone to panic. The consequences of a Romney win are actually going to be devastating – on a global scale. That’s not fear-mongering. That’s a fact. And there are some on this site who will be personally impacted. We have to help them calm down. And focus on what it will take to win. Many people here often say that during the ’08 campaign, the motto was to ignore the polls and pundits and work like we were 30 points behind. That’s good advice. Plus, ignore the media. The President keeps his eye on the ball. He never wastes time blaming or attacking people, because it doesn’t serve the larger purpose.
Oh no….I will stand and defend the right of people to disagree with pres Obama. I am simply saying that we know who our detractors are. So when we see that the pres or his team needs our severe critical lens, let Us channel those to the WH, their website or call Chicago. The media loves conflict. They book Sanders…the sen from VT or those who would pound on the president and they help the rightwing media echo machine to trash pres Obama. So by Us not even lending them any OUNCE of help…..their Sound and Fury would for sure, signify Nothing…..just like we did in 2008. That is all I am saying.
I’m with you on that!
Great comment Theo. I agree that it is a wise move to watch the debates on Cspan or barackobama.com. One should make his/her own mind up about how the debates go, and not be swayed by what pundits (most of whom said McCain won every debate with Sen. Obama) have to say. This refusal to call out Mitt’s lies (and statements by reporters that it is not their job to fact check) is a new thing. They are literally changing the rules in an effort to help Mitt Romney’s campaign. Under normal circumstances it would be a total scandal for a presidential candidate to lie the way Mitt did during the debate. We are in uncharted waters. As I have said before, PBO did the best that could be expected when debating a compulsive liar. The moderator had no control and if PBO took the advice of those throwing tantrum about his debate “performance” the debate would have devolved into a “you are a liar…no you are the liar” embarrassment. There was no stopping Mitt from getting the last word b/c the moderator was MIA. I don’t know the motive of those still harping about the debate. Many of these people I believe did not watch and listen to the debate. No blame for Mitt for lying. No blame for the moderator for failing to keep Mitt under control (that was the moderator’s job afterall). But loads of blame for PBO’s “performance”. They feel cheated out of a cathartic release, and take it as a personal slight by PBO against them. Time to move on an stop helping the pro-Mitt meme the MSM is pushing.
Thank you Nena for speaking TRUTH! Yes some of us here at TOD were very quick to join the MSM in bashing the President we claim to support. But like family, those who did were called out. At the same time, I am 100% behind LiberalPhenom about the importance of watching the next debate on either C-Span or the Obama-Biden 2012 livestream. I personally have vowed to avoid mainstream media (msm) because I am sick and tired of disinformation, outright lies, blatant hatred of the President by reporters and pundits in the msm!
Sabreen, I wouldn’t dream of watching anything but C-span. I learned that lesson in 2004.
Going down to OFA today to do some data entry…crunch time. Will check in from time to time…hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!
thx DF ! :-)
Thanks DF. You are such a hard working dear special one to me.HZ
But what about the Malfunctioning and Rigged Voting Machines?
This is to me the biggest threat. Second is voter suppression. These two will make Florida in 2000 seem benign. There must be a way to record or track dem votes outside the voting booth to call out any fraud on a dime’s notice.
I’m with tally on this. Totally flabbergasted as to why these have not been outlawed long before now!
One thing that this 2012 election is going to do for us is to make sure that those Prez-Obama-Haters who where previously hidden are now exposed.
Bill maher said the President took his Million dollars he donated, and spent it on POT.
Is Bill projecting?
Maher should STFU and use his brain. He donated to a Super PAC. Pres. Obama is not affiliated with the Super PAC nor does he run it. Hence, he did not personally receive and partake of Maher’s 1M donation.
Sure would be nice if we could afford to return Maher’s 1 mil. He is just like the person who help you out and throw it in your face forever.
These narcissists love to delude themselves that without their “help” President Obama wouldn’t exist. Of all the things PBO could be doing with the money why is pot the first thing Maher thought of?
President Obama can get all the pot in the world if he wants – when he wants. Maher is very insulting and bordering on racist when he invokes this image of the President misappropriating money to buy drugs.
Maher supports this pres. But he is a perfect illustration of what I wrote about up thread. He took to the Twitter machine and he delivered a perfect ammunition to those who severely hate president Obama. We have to measured in what we say….how we say them…..especially now…..30 Days before the election.
We need to understand that our actions…..our reactions…..when critical of this president at this Juncture…..are ICING on the Cake for those who want this president defeated. If we have bent Up issues…..then go to Whitehouse.gov or to mybarackobama.com or call the Chicago headquarters. But we must stay focused…..stop the bickering and get out there and re-elect this president.
I was on Twitter last night with some folks who were STILL trashing him. It is very frustrating to see Obama supporters engage in that kind of belittling of the President and then try to hide behind “I support him so don’t you dare question my loyalty, etc” It’s disingenuous at best.
I have never felt the urge to lambaste the President on his “performance” in a speech or debate because I’m not running his campaign. I’m not his boss or his parent. If I think there is something urgently wrong I will send a message to the campaign or the WH. Not blast it on Twitter or on this blog and provide fodder for lurkers in the MSM and GOP to run with.
They’ve been doing this shit for the past 5 years. Never fails.
I will never ever forget Ed Schultz. Asshole.
Thank you for understand what I am trying to express Hopefruit. Keep doing what you are doing….ask them if you can, how does that help now….just 30 days before the election. Dems love to argue. Now at this late time….is NO Longer the time or the place. They need to reserve their criticism until 8:30PM ET on Nov 6, 2012.
I repeat Bill who
A native elder sat with a young boy. He was explaining how we all walk with an angry bear and a gentle bear within us. How they are both fighting for dominion within the man. After the elder had been silent for some time the young boy looks up at him and asks ‘which one wins?’ To which the elder replies the ‘one you feed.’
It’s the same with these 2 bit hacks.
I repeat Bill Who?
This is too much. A one sentence comment gets posted here about Maher, who gave money to the PBO campaign. Maher says on his show that PBO’s debate performance was so relaxed he must have spent the donation on weed. Was that a good thing to say? No. Does it rise to the level of caring what Maher said? No. In my mind, Maher is expressing his disappointment in PBO’s performance. Nothing more, nothing less. He still supports PBO for the presidency. There were many who felt the same way. Big deal.
I never watch him because I think he’s a two bit hack. That’s my honest opinion. Others may feel differently and I defend their right to do so. But I give no one the power to tell me how I should feel. Ever.
But cookemom, this isn’t the first time Bill Maher has disrespected President Obama and the Office of the Presidency. It’s not the first time that he’s made comments that are not helpful. This election isn’t just about President Obama getting a second term. The plans on the right are actually destructive. They will cause harm. And it is deeply frustrating to see anyone excuse and defend people like Bill Maher who choose to disrespect the President at this moment in time – instead of using his platform to highlight the opposition. It’s not supportive when he does what he does. It just isn’t. The stakes are too high for that kind of fickle, feckless, spineless, selfish, ugly, ignorant support.
It’s also been four years of people like Bill Maher piling on this kind of crap on the head of a man who is entirely honourable, and who has done a good job as president. President Obama just asks for people to show dignity and respect and to not be cruel. He’s not asking for anything else. And when that’s all he asks for – it makes me ill to think that someone like Bill Maher thinks it’s ok to say the things he says about President Obama. It’s not supportive. You can choose to believe it is. But it’s not. I don’t agree about the things he says about other people either. He participates in creating a toxic environment and lowering the standard of acceptability. Why is that ok? Why is it ok to talk about your President like that? And at this critical moment in time, when the public perception is so crucial and so tentative – making a joke about the President buying drugs is not supporting the President’s re-election, no matter how much money he gives. No way to spin that. And the President doesn’t deserve that.
I tell my kids when they feel that what someone said may cause them anguish to ask themselves if it’s a big ‘so what’. That’s measured by how important the person is to them, what impact they have on their lives or the lives of the people around them. If it will prevent them from being who they are in integrity or character. If the answer is no, then it’s a big so what. Maher is a big so what to me and should be to anyone who pays attention to how PBO carries himself. I refuse to turn that much power over to a has been comedian who wants to stay in front of a camera. Who cares? This thread comments and others like it, are probably doing more to boost Maher’s career, than what he said could possibly impact PBO’s career.
That may work for people one encounters on the streets who have a relatively low level of influence in the grand scheme of things. But, for those with a national audience or a microphone, I think their responsibility is higher. They may not influence my life personally, or yours or your kids – but they do have an influence. I spoke to a young woman last week who religiously watches Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, and had been influenced by their “debate analysis”. After an hour, she realized that this election is about more than performance ability. My point is that, if we excuse people from holding themselves to a higher standard of behavior and respect, then we have to excuse the next one and the one after that – and before you know it, the whole infrastructure comes crashing down. And when those who have a wide and influential reach to impressionable minds is excused, the effect is exponential. There’s an epidemic of bullying in this country for a reason. And Maher’s opinion-making couldn’t come at a worse time.
It’s never ok to disrespect other people. And I think that society is a collective fabric or people woven together – one thread pulled out does make a difference, eventually.
Very good, but I don’t give over that power to anyone. I don’t think Maher has that much power. Anyone who would use Maher as their measure of what’s important to them, has a bigger problem than politics. Anyone who uses any TV personality or pundit as their point of reference, need to reassess their level of curiosity. Life has more to offer than caring about these folks. I don’t do the hand wringing at all, no matter who the person is. I am a optimist and I refuse to think this country will go to seed or come crashing down because a few bafoons decide to open their trap. They’re only as effective as we let them. I choose not to let them. I’d prefer to spend that time enjoying the stuff that really matters and it ain’t what folks watch on TV.
I neither have to excuse folks or expend any of my energy trying to figure out what their motives are. I make up my own mind, I teach my gives to do the same. I respect other people’s opinion, and I support their right to have one. That doesn’t mean that they rise to a level of influence that I should care what they think. Maher and the rest are entertainers. Again, so what.
I admire your independence and togetherness. I tend to feel the same way. But, I’ve learned that the majority of people don’t operate that way. They are either lemmings or incurious enough to gather evidence for themselves, or they were just never taught critical thinking. I agree with you that Bill Maher and his ilk are irrelevant for those who can think for themselves. But for those who can’t, and who still get to vote, he’s influential. And every time it’s acceptable for someone to disrespect the President or imply that it’s ok to do so – in the name of free speech and free opinion, it moves the needle and it corrodes the culture.
You have a strong opinion on this and so do I. Let’s agree to disagree.
I have to admit I said way worse things about Bush.
It was Bill’s way to call PBO the ‘N’ word and he knows it.
He’s always w/the stereotypical buzz words. I never listen to or watch his show. Yes, not once, I say with absolute certainity, because of the things he says. I skip clips that ppl post because i really don’t care what he has to say. Is he a dem who will be voting for PBO? Then good. But he has no sway with me and I have no respect for him. And for the life of me I just don’t get why he has a show.
But that’s just me and others are entitled to their opinions. No sweat
No! Wrong! It was a tasteless joke. NOT a rascist comment.
Whaaaaaaat!?!?!?!? He’s a fading comedian who is trying to stay relevant. We’re giving more than his due in keeping it that way. He needs attention and doesn’t care if it’s positive or negative, as long as we’re talking about him. In entertainment, that’s all that counts. There are plenty of times when we know that some people are at the ready to use the N word, this was not one of them. To say so, gives him way too much due. He’s simply a performer. Why give him that much power to matter?
If I were Priorities USA I would find a way of refunding Bill Maher his $1 million so that he may STFU!
Compare the conservative base reaction to bad Romney news (SKEWED POLLS!) to lib reaction to Obama's trouble (OMG WE'RE DOOMED)— (@daveweigel) October 07, 2012
When shit hits the fan, conservatives shore up their base and turn on the media 99% of the time. Liberals on the hand eat their own. They never learn. The major reason some people and pundits were screaming “PRES. OBAMA FAILED IN THE DEBATE AND WE’RE DOOMED!!!!” is because Liberal pundits collectively lost their minds and gave free rein for others to jump on the bandwagon and spin their own narrative.
They will be worse in his second term. Its just disgusting.
In President Obama’s second term, the liberal pundits and the emoprogs will be even more out of control than the first term – because they’ll have no leverage over President Obama (not that they did the first term), because he won’t need to run for re-election. So, their feelings of powerlessness will be even more magnified that in the first term, and they’ll want to “hold his feet” to a blazing hot fire until they are crispy remnants. They will be even more convinced that they put him in the Oval Office for a second term, ignoring the fact that there are millions of people with boots on the ground, and who dug into their bank accounts and cast their votes. And then they’ll turn their disappointed eyes towards the next Democratic presidential nominee, to demand their ponies from him/her.
And we can ignore them with impunity. We won’t need their support for re-election anymore, so they can just suck it.
Amen….by then….Most of Us will just ignore them.
actually, we’ll have another mid-term election to face, and if pbo doesn’t get the house and senate he needs this time, our cohesiveness will be even more critical then. and there’s another dem president to elect after that…. so it seems to me, we cannot write off anyone who leans away from the rw, even if they sometimes go too far.
The OH NOES WE’RE DOOMED meme just doesn’t have any place in reality. Seriously. It’s like someone saying gravity is a myth.
Dear News Media:Stop treating Presidential Debates like a SPORTING EVENT. They're not. AGGRESSION ≯ SUBSTANCE + FACTS. Aggression ≠ Winning.— Tally Briggs (@bardgal) October 07, 2012
Exactly Tally. This infuriates me too. The media might as well just get placards and magic markers so they can write down their instant analysis and hold it up to the audience like they do at the Olympics. Can’t you just see it now. All of the gasbags holding up their placards giving Romney high marks on “STYLE” and overlooking his PERFECT “10” ON LYING.
We have a presidential candidate who has been lying his arse off from day one and it has taken way too long for the media to even acknowledge that. This is unprecedented. But the focus of attention is President Obama’s demeanor at the debate and not Romney’s LYING AND REWRITING OF HISTORY. We have been let down by the media. It’s tragic. Facts and reality have taken a backseat to optics, spin, mind numbing ignorance, lazy reporting and shallowness. We are not being served. smdh
Bravo, Tally! I don’t care how aggressively a presidential candidate lies and fictionalizes things he is still not fit to be President! President Obama and Mitt Romney were not running for the title Heavy Weight Boxing Championship. But even in boxing, fighters who hit opponents below the belt have points taken off. And, if they repeatedly continue to hit below the belt, they are disqualified! The U.S. media, which declared a serial liar the winner of the Presidential debate on )ct.3, 20012, are a disgrace! Any media that declares as the winner a candidate who lied all the time during the debate must not be allowed to serve as impartial referees and judges of the debate.
UT……Can we please stop and self-correct FIRST. We started the chain reaction. We need to own that FIRST. Yes the Media will be with Romney……we know that already. Many of Us warned that and predicted it….including what the pollsters would do. But in Real Time…..our side were the loudest and screaming all over the techno world.
We became pot and now we are calling the already known Kettle Black? In 2008…..we didn’t do that…..No matter what the Media did. We brushed them off and went our way. Twitter, Tumbler(sp) and FaceBook were not what we used to be critical of then sen Obama….we used what we could For re-enforcement…..support and we helped our Man win. So let Us remember this so that IT Doesn’t Happen Again.
Nena, liberal pundits who are supposedly on OUR side led with this Obama trashing on Wed night. They ignited this firestorm on Twitter even before the debate was over and continued it – right up to Friday night. I was having some major fits of frustration because MSNBC decided on a late Friday night that they were going to double down on their crap about PBO’s “dismal” performance in the debate.
And Nena, it wasn’t the whole TOD blog that attacked the President’s performance. It was a few individuals with whom most of us disgreed – STRONGLY. If you go back and read the comments you will see that it was relatively few people here who were criticizing PBO on Wednesday night.
I remember. I am not saying that TOD….all were involved. No. But TOD is a player…..a house divided even by 1…..is Not a house United. But that was then. I am say…..30 days out…..let Us not what happened then repeat itself…..That is all I am saying. People here are serious, dedicated. None of Us can say we are perfect. However…..How and when we react to events is UP TO US.
I agree hopefruit. There were a few “chicken littles” who went way over board with their dramatics, but they were in the minority and many on this site were trying to provide a measure of calm. Those who freaked out must take responsibility for any damage they contributed, but that damage and its potential impact pales in comparison to what MSNBC pulled Wednesday night. In this forum and on twitter we have the power to respond in kind to “chicken littlism”, but boycott is a good way to get the message across to MSNBC that such over the top and counterproductive behavior is not acceptable. It will probably also help to prevent many unnecessary panic attacks.
Your premise is 100% wrong. A lot of people on twitter were solidly fighting for Pres. Obama and fighting against the media. I don’t know who you’re following on twitter or what crap your timeline was filled with. Same here on TOD. You paint everyone on TOD with a broad brush. Did you see me and a lot of people freaking out on Wednesday? NO. Then please don’t put me and others in the same category as others who were freaking out. There was a minute number whose freak out seemed loud but not the majority of us and we STRONGLY pushed back on their erroneous assumptions. The Liberal pundits did much damage than those who you claim were freaking out on twitter. The liberal pundits have a wider and louder megaphone that did worse damage than any freak out on twitter.
You might want to take your own advice and “self correct” first.
thank u UT. I really think its funny how many of the same people engaged in the freak out, are now saying, look what the freak out has done.. Not everyone freaked out. Some called for calm and. told people to chillax. Lets put the freak out & subsuquent fallout at the correct feet.
Oh my goodness. Communication can be heard. I am going to try and explain, if I can.
Self-correct was Not personal…..That included myself. All who support pres Obama. I meant nothing personal. I was talking in general of how we can avoid a repeat of what happened last week. I don’t think that my premise is 100% wrong, perhaps….just perhaps, 10% must have been correct. I come here and read what people say and what they do. People here inspire me to the what I do too. I don’t say much about what I do. So please, forgive me. I was not talking about you personally. I have on occasion thanked you for what you do. So I will just leave it for I don’t want to be a source of pain.
With you 100%!
I haz a confused.
I guess I missed all the OH NOES (about what?) on our side.
I didn’t (it has been doom and gloom all over this blog today) and I was brought down.
What’s amazing is that the media at the debates were busy tweeting, instead of actually watching and reporting on the substance of the debate. They were reading tweets and feeding on each other’s inside the bubble responses. Then you had PBO supporters reading the media tweets, believing the hype, retweeting the ‘woe is me’ and upsetting folks. It was like a run away train that only stopped when Mitt’s lies derailed it the next day. Had it not been for that, we’d still be wringing our hands. Maybe we’re not as strong of supporters we think we are, when it took so little to make us doubt PBO.
I noticed the same about the tweeting. That’s all they were doing..tweeting like bunch of high school sophomores. I’m actually happy that PBO chose to not counter the lies in the debate itself – it would all be a blur by now and the MSM narrative would be that PBO was angry and defensive and engaged in tit-for-tat name-calling in response to Romney’s assertions.
Damn I wish I had the $ to go to tonight’s concert.
Thank YOU Tally….that is what we need to be doing……The media know exactly what they are doing. That is why they are still talking about the debate.
The media should read this
Excellent read, debz. Thanks.
3000 people died on 9/11 b/c GOP White House didnt do its job. Media says "we all make mistakes." BHO loses debate: media says he is shit.— Michael J Rosenberg (@MJayRosenberg) October 07, 2012
I hope this guy got lots of tweets back asking how someone who breaks all the debate rules and lied continuously “won” the first presidential debate.
Krugman slammed the media! I am glad that Paul Krugman did something that no one else in the so called unBIASED media ever bothers to do.
I found it on huffington post… don’t want to link to that site but basically he accused Carville and friends of not doing their job and that PBO’s falsehoods were very minor compared to Romneys when they tried their false both are the same charge.
okay, thanks. today’s krugman is good, too, but on another topic: jobs. i’m too cheap to pay for the nyt, so i get his stuff from the princeton election consortium blog. i don’t hate huffy, but it’s so garbagy, i seldom visit.
Good News For America = Depressing News For The GOP. Patriots!!!! #Obama2012 http://t.co/nKzRDvnL— The Obama Diary (@TheObamaDiary) October 07, 2012
You really are a sweet person. Love how you manage your site. I mean it. Really.
Ah LunarSea, I’m a cranky moody grouch most of the time (shut up amk), but thank you, you’re the best!
 yeah and shut it amk.
You are a gem
First Lady Michelle Obama says that being president does not change who you are but reveals who you are. During the first presidential debate America indeed saw that being a candidate does not change who you are but inevitably reveals it; and what America saw was a candidate, Willard Mitt Romney, whose goal it is to capture the presidency by any means necessary.
Candidate Romney revealed a willingness to lie and an ease in doing so. Candidate Romney revealed a shameless reversal of policy roles because he holds no firm position on any policy. Candidate Romney revealed the alarming ability to look America straight in its eye and ask who America’s going to believe him or its lying eyes.
President Obama, far from being passive, far from being rolled, far from being intimidated allowed Candidate Romney to reveal himself before more than 65 million of his fellow Americans. President Obama allowed America to witness Romney the liar, Romney the flip-flopper, Romney the weather vane. America saw Candidate Romney tell more than two dozen lies in the span of under forty-minutes. America saw Candidate Romney offer no apology for his disparaging forty-seven percent of Americans. America saw Candidate Romney equate rapid fire delivery with telling the truth.
Not that the president has allowed Romney to reveal who he is, Candidate Romney will have to answer to the American people for his lies. He will have to declare what he believes in. He will have to tell America what his views are. He will have to step up as the head of the Republican Party, and he will have to decide if he is indeed the head of the Republican Party or if he’s only the front man.
Now that America has seen who Candidate Romney really is, a hollow man, a man with no core convictions, a man who runs with scissors, running roughshod over the truth, President Obama and the American people will wrest the scissors from Romney’s hands to cut through his bs , and America will be able to do so because the president has revealed Romney for what he truly is.
So true, so true.

Saw that on twitter and enjoyed retweeting it. Neocons always like to hide in the shadows that way they can tell different groups different thinks with impunity. They shrivel in the sunlight. ‘Oh no, I’m melting’ like the wicked witch and water. Lol
I don’t have to believe PBO is perfect to support him. I don’t have to believe he is always exactly right to know that he is the best president of my life time. I don’t have to see him perform to his absolute best to love him to the depth of my being. I didn’t think it was his absolute best performance during the debate. He was dealing with a someone who lied to an absolutely astonishing extent, and I bet the debate prep team didn’t seriously consider that Romney would totally rewrite his platform right there on the debate stage. I would say that was one hell of a curve ball. Given that, PBO kept his temper, hammered out his message, and reacted with grace and good manners. That’s all he needed to do and more that almost anyone else would have been able to do. I give him major props for not throwing his shoe and the guy and yelling, “Tell the truth for once in your f%*&king life!!!1 (And I don’t swear and never use that word). We all want him back so much, and see clearly the dire consequences for this country if he is not elected that any little thing that goes wrong seems like the ground is shaking beneath our feet. But that’s not the case. We are all working, contributing, and praying to get him reelected and he WILL be reelected, if we take that as a given, we can dust the other stuff off our shoulders, and be able to move forward together despite disagreements.
Actually, with this president I think I am experiencing what older people felt about President Roosevelt. I really understand now the depth of their feeling.
I agree. And I don’t support him blindly. After all in a perfect none of us would be here. :-)
S/b ‘in a perfect world none of us would be here’
You speak for me and so many maryl1. President Obama is a politician, a decent human being who truly cares about people, a devoted husband and father…..you can’t ask for anything more from a president. I don’t expect him to DO everything perfectly because NONE of us are perfect. I don’t do MY OWN JOB perfectly how the hell can we expect him to do everything perfectly? Do we live our own lives perfectly or nearly perfect? What has happened to some of us who think that he has to do everything like WE would do when we will NEVER walk in his shoes nor would I want too. Thank you Mary for saying it so succently.
” I give him major props for not throwing his shoe and the guy and yelling, “Tell the truth for once in your f%*&king life!!!”
Can you just imagine if this had happened! 8O The image has made me laugh for the last few minutes, and I’m sure that the thought probably ran through President Obama’s mind on the night, especially the one time I saw him actually shake his head in bemusement. He has amazing self-control. We know he’s competitive, so just imagine how hard it had to be for him to realize he was up against an absolute fool who has no credibility, no integrity, no core. Self-control is an understatement.
He needed his “Anger Interpreter” there! We should tweet Axlerod and suggest that for the next debate.
Agree with you except “that” word seems to have crept into my vocabulary since Romney came onto the scene…Even Palin didn’t bring it out in me…..also….PBO didn’t have to throw his shoe, I did that for him ; ^ ).
sam wang predicts the house race as ‘knife edge':
‘ Unlike the Presidential and Senate races, the outcome of House control depends critically on events in the coming weeks. Voter enthusiasm will almost certainly be the determining factor. I agree (!) with Bill Kristol that the Obama-Romney margin will be strongly predictive; 3% or greater will suggest a likely Democratic takeover of the House.
It is critical to pay attention to the uncertainty here: +/-11 seats.
House prediction, October 6th:
Two-party popular vote share: D 51.3 +/- 1.5 %, R 48.7 +/- 1.5%.
Seats*: D 217.5 +/- 11 seats, R 217.5 +/- 11 seats.
Uncertainties are 1-sigma (68% of outcomes). ‘
The fickleness of the American electorate drives me crazy.
yes, there’s a head-smack moment every day for that reason.
but what i thought was interesting in sam’s analysis is that people fired up for pbo will also vote the dem down ticket. the house depends on the pres vote margin, which is our daily work. i like that voters are making that connection, that pbo needs a workable congress, and they need to vote one in!
Yes – you’re right. People are starting to make that connection. Someone set me straight a few months ago when I was refusing to donate to the DCCC that without a workable Congress, progress would be limited. I’m glad more and more people are making the connection.

Wow. Now we have to worry about fake right wing polls!
For what it’s worth, my last comment on the debate.
I think PBO and his team knew exactly what Mitt would do. They knew he was spoiling for a fight. Take a look at his primary debate with Rick Perry. That was the real debating Mitt Romney. He was aggressive, invaded Perry’s personal space, even put his hand on him. He over-talked Perry and dominated the stage. That was Mitt at his best. PBO made a conscious decision to not give that Mitt a chance for a repeat performance. PBO is measured in his speech and is cerebral in his delivery. That’s just who he is and that’s who showed up at the debate. Check out his debates with Hillary, same guy. It would not have served him to allow Mitt to appear to walk all over him. Not just because the media would be declaring the winner and loser, but because he had to remain Presidential. America was not the only people watching, PBO was being viewed by our allies and foes alike. I think he made the conscious decision to deal with the fall-out of his performance, than the visual of sparring with a thug.
People complained that PBO didn’t bring up Mitt’s talk about the 47%, car bailout, and other crazy things he said. Well that’s because PBO knew Mitt had a well planned and much rehearsed answer. Mitt was reduced to shadow boxing wildly with himself. He turned much of that unspent energy on the moderator. Then instead of having his prepared comebacks viewed by 65 million debate viewers, he had to go on FOX to say it, so it wouldn’t go completely to waste.
We don’t know what the next debates will bring. Our job is to continue our GOTV efforts, cause no matter how he performs during a debate, won’t do a bit of good if folks don’t go to the polls.
You raise some interesting points.
I confess I don’t have a clue as to what was going thru PBOs mind and since I’m not part of his inner circle I doubt I’ll ever know. But I have seen lots of thoughtful and plausable opinions in the matter that have provided plenty of food for thought.
Thank for offering another perspective. As for me, I’m moving on. :-)
There is an article on politico that talks about how PBO felt about his debate performance (don’t know how to link on IPAD yet, sorry) and PBO was upset with how grim he felt he looked. He then had a meeting with his closest advisors, and the next day he was the President Obama we all know. He did not make excuses, he just did something about it. It was actually a great article, Politico, who would thunk it?
You mean Politico of the unnamed sources? That Politico? Though that does sound like how PBO would have handled it.
Yes, that Politico. I am IPAD challenged right now or I would give you the link. Sorry.
No problem, I believe PBO would have responded that way.
Yes, yes, yes and yes. More yes.
Yes yes,etc was to Cookemom.
I wont say that PBO has won every single debate, that would be near impossible as many presidents before him have lost a number of debates. Besides W. their have been a number of them. In the end it’s how the media over reactes at every single little thing and tries to sensatilizes every single thing that gets on my nerves. It’s like they are trying to have a direct effect on the outcome.
In 2010 Ed Shultz told people not vote and a year later he claimed he was puzzled why so many republicans took office. I immediately got angry but tried to shrug it off as I realized that getting mad doesn’t solve anything.
The bottom line is that in the end we need to press on, maybe the president didn’t perform his best in the debate but that is neither here or there. If we make it a big deal and let these asshole talking heads run everything we’ll be giving the republicans what they want. We MUST fight on and push people to vote for this man or we are SCREWED. Romney will be the worse president in American history, worse than W by a mile and I mean it. The man insults other nations and constantly acts like an idiot to the point of being hated.
We must win this election as I fear this asshole will start WWIII.
I attended an event that Ed Schultz was present. This was in Jan 2011. My sister and I walked to him and he was polite to Us and we both told him that his outburst about staying home and teaching president Obama a lesson was wrong. We both told him in his face. He didn’t really say much. He smiled and we both walked away.
I have never seen so many polls in my life. Do you think it’s part of the how to confuse the electorate’ or is everyone really trying to just proof themselves more knowledgeable than the previous pollsters.
You know how some babies sleep thru lots of activity and commotion almost like they are shutting it out? That’s how I feel about polls now. I’ve shut them down for sake of my sanity. The only one that I’m gonna pay attn to is the Nov ballot poll.
Until I’m gonna work like hell for the outcome I want to see. :-)
It’s the fact that this country still is not convinced the black guy is deserving of its full acceptance. Look at America’s history of discrimination and demonizing of the “Negro” and one will find all the evidence of white supremacist thinking. Also, we must not discount that many AAs feel themselves not ready to stand on their own merits, simply as intellectual beings, with the same capabilities as the majority in power. Most polls are used simply to influence- they do no one real favor.
Also, we must not discount that many AAs feel themselves not ready to stand on their own merits, simply as intellectual beings, with the same capabilities as the majority in power…
It is NOT that blk folks don’t feel up to snuff….it is that blk folks know that when it comes to our merits…we have to be TWICE AS GOOD…something that told to me many times by my nana….
I must correct any misunderstanding you and EricFive seem to have by my comment. I am not saying “all” AAs feel this way. I am speaking of the many I hear who would pander to the right to win favor, or side with the old-school revolutionaries I hear on radio who think PBO has not done enough for black people when I hadn’t heard the same concern under any other president before PBO. AAs on whole are in for PBO- I am generally speaking of too many white, black and other who treat him as though he cannot even think for himself without their input. Case in point- Cornell West, Tavis Smiley, various so-called journalists, too many in the CBC, ministers, etc. I hear these people all the time. And no where had I said Mitt is winning the black vote, which is preposterous :-D I maintain that too many take PBO as someone whom they can instruct (all the pundits); buddy up with (the pizza guy picking him up- I didn’t appreciate that at all; come on to- the lady who told him he had a “hot body” who also called to FLOTUS- “eat your heart out”. Really? FLOTUS sleeps with this man every night and had his babies- what the f— was that? In summary, he has not been held to the same dignity as the office commanded prior to his being elected.
That’s cool EDP. Thanks for your response. Now I see what you mean. Tavis and West have personal vendettas against the President (Tavis is still piss Obama did not agree to appear at one of his race summits in 2008. Obama offered Michelle to attend in his place, but that was not good enough fot Tavis and he has had it in for the President ever since). I totally agree with your take on the CBC which can be very annoying with their buck passing. It is easier to blame PBO than fight for legislation with the GOP. They act like they are afraid of the GOP. These type of folks folks are not representative of the AA community at large. They are over represented in the media b/c the MSM loves to put a black face on its nonstop critcism of PBO. Lots of these people adopt an anti-PBO stance just to get some media attention and TV time.
Maybe I’m not understanding you correctly, but if you believe Mitt is winning the black vote due to some GOP poll, I have a bridge to sell you. Historically black people have been the voice of reason in the fractured Democratic party. African-American support for Clinton during the impeachment scandal was unwavering, for example. It is not African-Americans who vote against their own economic interests, it is poor white folks (blame them and Naderites for GWB). Polls serve a valuable role, but are subject to abuse. That is why it is important to check the cross tabs, and know the pollsters leanings and credibility.
Can I just say that no one person is more correct than another here when it comes to having a different view on things. It is one thing to discuss and debate a person’s post and another to belittle them by advancing a ‘you are wrong’ offensive.
It advances nothing but ill will and a feeling that unless your post/thoughts conform to someone else’s then keep a lid on it. It shows a lack of respect for others opinions and feelings.
So go ahead lace into me now. Or take the time to digest what I said in the spirit it was said, which is to ensure that this is the kind of open respectful place Chips has always worked to make it.
Good comment, LunarSea. We have to be able to disagree and debate topics without it dissolving into war.
I don’t ever mind being told when I am wrong. Why? If one tells me that I am wrong with facts and data……I may not appreciate it right away. But I respect and will evaluate it and hopefully, especially when it is done out of Love…..like a teachable moment and heed the information.
Please let me know….To learn is to grow. It is in how the correction is delivered that counts the most. So please, If anyone here see me saying something that is off…..that is OK if I am educated, so that I may self-correct. People here are a source of inspiration for me.
I just finished watching MHP. Loved her footnote at the end. Don’t confuse aggressiveness with strength. Seems to me that is exactly what the vast majority of media has done since the debate Wed night.
They’ve been doing that forever.
Romney is screwed in the next debate.
I went to a Fall Arts Festival in Red Georgia today and people were not talking about the President’s performance at the debate…they were talking about Romney changing his entire campaign and how the media’s heads exploded over the President and ignored Romney’s lying.
All my Holiday Shopping got done too. :-)
This is mostly what I’m hearing with a few ‘i wish he fought against the lies harder’.
I hold all views to be valid to the person holding them.
But I am happy that 100% that I have talked with are not falling for the ‘performance’.
Oh Lunar Sea. Thank you. I haven’t met anyone who’s fallen for the performance. They are just shocked that Robney felt compelled to act more like a Democrat to get points, thereby acknowledging how stinking unpopular his own views are. I ran into one blowhard Democrat who started telling me his problems with the president. I told him I wasn’t interested and he should button it up until November and then he could whine all he liked. He looked at me sheepishly and walked away.
Lol on your encounter. Don’t mess with obots. We’ll take your vote and leaving you laying on the ground. Shut up and vote, damnit’ LOL
Love my Uncle Joe. Always speaks from the heart. And as a military family man you know it’s not just platitudes
The entire Obama/Biden camp have been ready for Willard since he announced that he would run. Remember when Rahm made the critical comment about willard flip-flopping? They knew back then that he would be the one that our Beloved President would have to run against (and defeat-by the way). They are ready for him. They are loaded for bear. Willard’s buzzard meat. It is so over for him. All of this hoopla (what little there is)is sound and fury signifying nothing. Willard has nothing to offer and Paulie has even less.
Does anyone know if this concert thing is going to live streamed?….I need to know what to do with the rest of my day…like clean the house or watch PBO, Bill Clinton, and George Cloney…at my age that takes some preparing to avoid high blood pressure or stroke.
That would be so great
It will be available. CBS may livestream it. CNN hardly ever operates on Sunday. But it will be late–9pm ET.
Thanks will set a reminder for it. So excited
I know what you mean, kathryn!
ha ha ha! I thought I was the only one who got like that. earth, wind, and fire, jennifer hudson, bon jovi, and even the young pop singer katy perry. I enjoy them all and need time to spiff up my dancing shoes.
My philosophy on matters pertaining to Barack Obama has always been to trust him rather than try to second guess him and give him advice. Thus I ignore the zillions of articles that are coming out now on what he should do. My faith has never failed, but then I never hold preconceived notions of what I want to have him do. Surprises are better and you are never disappointed. This is why, I think, those on left are so often disappointed because they want him to do what THEY would do rather than let him act as he sees best fit.
Never saw anything like it. Maybe someday we’ll figure it out. Guess people want to latch on to a winner, like parasites, aren’t used to being around one, so they just say or do any old thing so they can hang with him and they think they’ll jump in the spotlight and be closer to his success. (I have no idea what that meant.) Like they have a vested self-interest in his being a success, but they have never “been around greatness” before, and get all lightheaded and goofy.
Or they are just stupid.
Sharon….i want to post your comments on my fb page!
yay! Best comment on this subject yet.
Arrival in LA
For the next debate, President Obama needs a “they call me Mr. Tibbs” moment. He needs to throw down the gauntlet and display his righteous anger. He needs to say, “yes, I am angry. I am angry because this man, Mitt Romney shows contempt for the American people by looking them in the eye and lying. I am angry because this man, Mitt Romney, has so little respect for the American people that he refuses to disclose his taxes. I’m angry because this man, Mitt Romney, believes that his vulture capitalism entitles him to run the country.” He can turn it all around by just subverting all the stereotypical constraints against him. He’ll blunt the MSM and he’ll galvanize the base and impress the independents as America heads runs into home plate on election day.
I love that movie……
I’m sure a large portion of electorate would be on their feet cheering. Me among them. :!:
Or maybe we could let President Obama be President Obama. But I understand your point!
I understand what you’re trying to say here. But, why does the President actually have to say those words? Don’t we all already know that? And if not, why not? Randi Rhodes mentioned a few times this week that a lot of the people who were angry – mostly pundits – were mad that President Obama didn’t use their words to challenge Mitt Romney. Every time someone says “President Obama needs to do…”, they’re saying that he should act as they would imagine themselves acting. And the truth is, most people wouldn’t have the wherewithal to do what you’re saying. Most people wouldn’t be on that stage, fighting for a population of people who have not risen to he occasion. Who haven’t kept themselves informed. Who haven’t held their congressperson accountable. Who haven’t expressed any gratitude for this man’s sacrifice for the last four years – across his lifetime actually. People who were silent while he faced a barrage of racist attacks, and who have blamed him for the intransigence he’s found in Congress. People who refuse to look at reality and learn for themselves whether the economy is actually in recovery -a s it has been for over three years now. Maybe the American people are the ones who President Obama should be angry with- given that they presented Romney as a viable candidate to challenge him for the Presidency, after he’s worked these last four years in unbelievable circumstances, facing and meeting enormous and historic challenges, and rising to the occasion every single time. But still having to prove himself at each new hurdle, like he doesn’t have four years (and a lifetime) of achievement to his credit. Maybe he’s not angry. Maybe he’s just offended.
All I’m saying is that his owning up to his anger takes the talking point away from the media. They want to use the anger in a way, subtle but tangible, to reinforce the stereotype. If he subverts it, they can no longer wield that weapon. Well-placed righteous anger can garner much empathy and considering all that the president has put up with, his subverting this most insidious meme would do the country some good.
If PBO displayed that “righteous anger” during the first debate he would come off as angry and defensive to a large segment of the population who have not been following the election as closely as we have. The situation was not yet ripe for what you are requesting. If PBO and his team believe that the “angry black man” thing is to be avoided, I must defer to their superior knowledge of the political landscape. PBO has to walk a racial tightrope being the first black President. To pretend otherwise is naive. PBO was not speaking or appealing to his base during the debate, he was appealing to Independent voters and persuadable republicans, many of whom are not a progressive racially as you seem to believe. Rove knew what he was doing when he released that 2007 video of PBO.
I still think that he, as the American president, could have displayed anger at the notion that someone was insulting America’s intelligence. The trick is to transfer from black man’s anger to America’s anger. He could have done it, and it would have been okay. I truly do not think that it would have been catastrophic.
And as soon as he does that, the trusty MSM will give Romney yet another leg-up by being concerned about the President’s “angry tone”.
Drudge and Hannity tried to use that retread speech about Katrina to play to the “angry black man stirring up black anger” to scare their base to the polls.
People miscalculate how their Hollywood “righteous anger” vision will play with the biased MSM we have to suffer.
Still think he can play it off , if it’s viewed as America’s anger, not his alone.
we are certainly entitled to entertain the thought even as we know it might not happen. And I think we can all use the lightheartedness of it.

Romney picked the wrong bird to mess with.
Isn’t it always those unpredictable, unscripted moments in time that make their way into the collective awareness.
Lol, President Obama team could script this any better….remember the former Governor Ohio, did say if Romney was Santa Claus he would fire the reindeers and out source the elfs…now we know what Mitt would do to Big Bird if he became President.
Sure did, ut (and thank you for the follow of my twitmo account :) )
By protecting #BIGBIRD from #AngryWhitePlutocrats, #PBO also protects this child from their lust for perpetual war & subjugation of women.— Bobfr47 (@Our4thEstate_47) October 07, 2012

Marine One just flew over with President Obama and his crew – leaving LAX. How exciting!
I am reposting this from an earlier thread –
By William Thomas
There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a republican or democrat, but the President of the United States. The oath of office was taken, the wagons were circled around the country’s borders and it was America versus the rest of the world with the president of all the people at the helm.
Suddenly President Barack Obama, with the potential to become an exceptional president has become the glaring exception to that unwritten, patriotic rule.
Four days before President Obama’s inauguration, before he officially took charge of the American government, Rush Limbaugh boasted publicly that he hoped the president would fail. Of course, when the president fails the country flounders. Wishing harm upon your country in order to further your own narrow political views is selfish, sinister and a tad treasonous as well.
In President Barack Obama, Americans have a charismatic leader with a good and honest heart. Unlike his predecessor, he’s a very intelligent leader. And unlike that president’s predecessor, he’s a highly moral man.
In President Obama, Americans have the real deal, the whole package and a leader that citizens of almost every country around the world look to with great envy. Given the opportunity, Canadians would trade our leader, hell, most of our leaders for Obama in a heartbeat.
What America has in Obama is a head of state with vitality and insight and youth. Think about it, Barack Obama is a young Nelson Mandela. Mandela was the face of change and charity for all of Africa but he was too old to make it happen. The great things Obama might do for America and the world could go on for decades after he’s out of office.
America, you know not what you have.
Although a 2010 article, Mr. Thomas really hits the nail on the head. President Obama is a great leader. I am very proud of him and looking forward to what he’ll do in the next 4 years. Thankfully, not everyone here in the US is a raging Rightwinger lunatic!
