Temp staffing agencies are harder to get through to now. It’s not like it was 20 years ago. Everything is email now, and they don’t make it easy to follow up with a phone call, because no one will talk to you. This sucks. :(

you are correct. what may be helpful is to complete an application in a temp office branch close to where most new businesses are opening up in the area you live.

if possible complete applications with each of the differently-named agencies.

during this time, focus on the ones that have seasonal jobs so that you can get a foot in the door for longer-term jobs

I HOPE THAT EVERYONE WATCHING THE DEBATE TONIGHT IS WATCHING ON C-SPAN. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TURN OFF THE TEEVEE AND DON’T LISTEN TO THE COMMENTS AFTERWARDS…..DON’T TURN TO MSNBC, CNN, RWPUNDIT TEEVEE OR RADIO.

DON’T GO TO DKOS OR OTHER LW/RW BLOGS…IN FACT CHIPSTICKS CAN YOU TURN OFF THE COMMENTS FOR TONIGHT ONLY? SO NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS GOOD OR BAD ANY PBO/BIDEN SUPPORTERS DON’T GO OFF THE RAILS AND GET OTHERS UPSET AND IN THE MEANTIME.

WE ALL ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO WORK HARD FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN TO GET THEM RE-ELECTED NO MATTER HOW THEY PERFORM TONIGHT. THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH AT STAKE TO CARE WHO WON WHO LOST WHEN WE ALL KNOW THE MEDIA HAS MADE UP THEIR MINDS WHO THEY WANT TO WIN.

CBS4 Miami Kicks Off Investigative Series on Overlooked E-Voting Concerns: ‘Citizens Should be Screaming From the Rooftops’

    http://www.bradblog.com/?p=9615

[Local news TV report video included in article]

Veteran FL election official, Ion Sancho warns: ‘It is wrong to assume that the machines are always right. They’re not’…
By Brad Friedman on 10/5/2012, 1:23pm PT

Lost in all of the front-end voter suppression and voter registration fraud news over the past many months this cycle, is the continuing “back-end” threat to Election Integrity still very much present in our unoverseeable, easily-manipulated, oft-failed electronic voting systems — both touch-screen and paper ballot optical-scan systems.

Helping to balance that, if only a bit this week, we get some excellent investigative local TV news reporting from Miami’s Michele Gillen and her CBS4 Investigative team. They have noticed that we still have a very serious problem with the privatization of our supposedly-public electoral system, which now employes proprietary computer systems from private companies to determine the results of our elections…

From the printed version of the report…

“MIAMI (CBS4) – Ion Sancho is a man on a mission. Just weeks from the presidential election, one of the most veteran election supervisors in the state of Florida, thinks there’s plenty for him and his colleagues to lose sleep over.

What keeps him awake at night? Whether you can trust the machine you will be voting on.

“We still have not secured the process to ensure that that machine has read that ballot correctly and it is 100 percent accurate. Because it is wrong to assume that the machines are always right. They’re not, ” Sancho tells CBS4 Chief Investigator Michele Gillen.

“I think the citizens should be screaming from the rooftops,” he punctuates with the candor and directness he is known for. ”

The legendary Ion Sancho, quoted above, is Leon County, FL’s long-time Supervisor of Elections, so trusted by both parties that he was named to oversee the (eventually aborted) 2000 Presidential Election recount in the Sunshine State. He was also the first election official in the nation to allow an independent hack test of an electronic voting system. That test resulted in the stunning hack of a Diebold optical-scan system as seen in the shocking climactic scene of HBO’s Emmy-nominated 2006 documentary Hacking Democracy.

Despite that very public hack, almost seven years ago, the very same machines are still in use in dozens of states. All the rest use computers that are virtually identical, and as easily manipulated and as often malfunctioning.

Sancho goes on, in the report above, to give today’s Florida election system a grade of “F. F. F.” He’s being kind though… [more in the article]

    More good news:

U.S. jobless claims fall to lowest in four and half years

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/11/us-usa-economy-idUSBRE89A0R520121011

    By Doug Palmer

    WASHINGTON | Thu Oct 11, 2012 4:35pm EDT

(Reuters) – The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits slid last week to the lowest level in more than four and a half years, according to government data that may provide a boost to President Barack Obama a month before voters go to the polls.

The Labor Department report on Thursday was the latest data to suggest improvement in the jobs market, though the surprisingly large 30,000 drop in new claims may have reflected distortions due to seasonal adjustments that are likely to be smoothed out in coming weeks.

“The overall trend seems to be that the labor market is improving,” said Brian Kim, a currency strategist at RBS Securities in Stamford, Connecticut.

A Labor Department analyst said seasonal factors had predicted a very large increase in claims last week, which he said would be typical for the first week of the quarter. Unadjusted claims did rise, but far less than expected, resulting in the sharp drop in the seasonally adjusted figure.

He noted that one state reported a decline in claims last week when a rise had been expected. No states had been estimated for the report, he said.

“We will likely see some payback in the claims data reported next week. But through this potential volatility, it does look like the trend in the claims is improving somewhat,” said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan… [more in the article]

I wonder how Joe B. feels—–(I feel for him). I wonder if he feels the pressure to impress and succeed or if he relishes the opportunity to expose some truths and can’t wait to do it. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed any nervousness from him, but there is so much stuff, so many facts to have at the ready, so much on his shoulders and high expectations— and I wonder if Ryan will try out a new personna a la Romney’s debate makeover. What do y’all think?
And I vote “no” on turning off the comments here. That makes no sense to me. We should be able to comment in this usually friendly environment. We’re all “growed up” here, or should be.

Joe’s an old pro! He’s got this!

    • 54 Bill R.
      October 11, 2012 at 6:11 pm

I’m betting Joe relishes this opportunity to give Paul Ryan his comeuppance. He has been in the Senate since the 1970s until his VP election. He has his facts down and knows where the bones are buried. He knows Paul Ryan’s legislative history and voting pattern like the back of his hand. He has debated with the best of them in the Senate. He had to guard himself when going against Palin because of the possible backlash by women. No holding back tonight. The other thing I am guessing is that Joe Biden is a progressive Catholic. He came of age with Vatican II and believes strongly in the Church’s teachings on social justice, and undoubtedly he is contemptuous of someone who would choose Ayn Rand and her doctrine of selfishness and atheism over the Gospel and the papal encyclicals on social justice and government responsibilities to the needy. Joe is a devout Catholic who carries his rosary everywhere. He wants the Catholic teaching on social justice and governance to be affirmed and for this upstart to stop perverting religion and religious values.

      • 55 dotster3
        October 11, 2012 at 6:35 pm

Since they’re both Catholic, I wonder if their differences will come up during the debate. Paul Ryan’s beliefs are way out there on the extreme side—–no contraception, legitimate rape, personhood etc. Now that would be interesting, as I’m staring at a “Vote Pro Life” sign across the street.

    • 56 cookemom
      October 11, 2012 at 6:12 pm

I heard that the main reason PBO picked Biden asVP was how impressive he was during the ’08 primary debates. So I’m thinking the strategy is as PBO has already said, ‘let Joe, be Joe’. VP Joe has been through it all, both politically and personally. He will handle the debate as he’s always done, with professionalism and compassion, and the truth. Only the media is making this into a do or die issue. Most people have already made up their minds. Those who say they haven’t are lying or don’t plan to vote for Dem or Repub or at all.

President Obama will be headed to Williamsburg, Va. for three days of debate prep, the Obama campaign confirmed.

He plans to depart Washington on Sunday and return on Tuesday, the White House announced.

As previously reported by the Chicago Sun-Times’ Lynn Sweet, Obama is planning a hiatus to Virginia to “retool” after his widely panned performance in the first debate.

The next presidential debate will be held next Tuesday at Hofstra University on Long Island.

The Obama campaign is blaming Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for the political firestorm surrounding the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

“The entire reason that this has become the political topic it is, is because of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. It’s a big part of their stump speech and it’s reckless and irresponsible,” deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said Thursday on CNN.

Asked about the reaction of the mother of one of those killed in the September attack, Cutter defend the administration’s mixed messages.

“We put the facts out there every step of the way,” Cutter said, saying an investigation is still ongoing.

The Obama administration has come under widespread criticism for it’s handling for the security situation in Benghazi.

Multiple reports indicate that State Department personnel had asked for additional security. Further, the administration was forced to admit that the attack was clearly connected to terrorism — and not the result of protests against an anti-Islamic film.

Administration officials initially downplayed connections to terrorism — culminating in U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice’s appearance on ABC’s “This Week” in mid-September where she said that the attack was “not premeditated.”

The administration has since disavowed those comments, admitting that the attack was deliberate, pre-planned and likely the work of terrorists.
    -/
So, now Fox is twisting what she said, she didn’t blame R&R for the Benghazi attack.
What a bunch of losers over there at Fox and CNN.

President Obama used some excellent framing today, words that are readily accessible in the popular culture. For example, defining MItt’s current strategy and actions as “extreme makeover” . Everyone knows that expression. And juxtaposing the terms “extremely conservative” (How Romney defined himself in the primary speech he gave at CPAC) with “extremely kidding” is a work of genius. Basically he’s calling Mitt a liar but doing it in a sophisticated humorous way, totally calling MItt out on his lack of credibility.

  27. October 11, 2012 at 6:24 pm

    Oh Brother-

The Romney/Ryan camp has apparently insisted that Ryan be referred to as “Mr” during the debate rather than “Congressman.” So Biden — presumably he’s going by “Vice President” rather than like “Doc Biden” or something — has to refer to Ryan as “Mr. Ryan.” Presumably this is because Congress is generally unpopular and they want to seem like outsiders. But isn’t this exactly the kind of thing that makes you seem juvenile when someone leaks this on you? Good idea? Hard to figure.

            October 11, 2012 at 7:24 pm

i’m still of the opinion that it was rope-a-dope. he’s got the public telling him now to be tougher and call out the lies, as opposed doing it himself at first and be the “angry black man.” he can now do it since he’s just listening to “the people,” and he’s also got mittbot on record in his own words lying like crazy, except for the truthful comment our president got him to say, and that was about social security as a voucher program, which our president aggressively got mittbot to admit. he knows what he’s doing, and i feel his comments over this week show that this was the strategy. just my 2 cents on really studying his strategies and actions over the years, and some of the various “art of war” strategies over the centuries. of course as we know here, debates and optics have a minor effect…we’re going to win because of the ground game and o.f.a. anyway.

              October 11, 2012 at 7:26 pm

plus, it also gets more of the public engaged and thinking they are part of the campaign and so on. republicans and media are one thing, but president obama also has to cajole voter apathy and some elements of the liberal side. cool with me when it’s for a good cause!

            • October 11, 2012 at 7:34 pm

I’d love to believe all that 4More, but at the risk of re-opening the whole thing … I don’t, to be honest. There was a huge audience for that debate, way bigger than for rallies or ads, and Romney’s lies largely went unchallenged. I don’t think there’s any way to rationalize that, but I’m absolutely convinced the next two debates will be great.

              • 90 hopefruit2
                October 11, 2012 at 7:54 pm

I think even that “admission” is hiding a bit of of rope-a-dope as 4morefor44 was saying. This strategy is similar to the “evolving” strategy on same-sex marriage. The president takes an approach that he thinks will get the masses to push him for the direction he ACTUALLY wants to go in the first place. I think he desperately wanted to call Romney out on all his lies and humiliate him in front of a large audience, but he first wanted to make sure he had the country fully behind him and first disabled the media, so when he actually does it, the media will be fully disabled to criticize him or at risk of losing their credibility if they do.

I don’t think he would have used that approach if there was only one debate before the election.

actually, the big changes are happening much faster than i ever thought they would. just as in 2006-2007 when so many good liberal friends of mine didn’t think america was ready yet for a black president. and we’d have so much massive legislation passed in 3 years…it’s really remarkable especially given the media landscape and republican (often along with a lot of fake democrats) opposing even the smallest legislation or appointment.

the “change” is happening faster than i ever expected, and when looking in a historical context, and how it took hundres of years for civil rights and women’s sufferage and so on, we all should be applauding how quickly president obama has been able to bring about the changes. forward!!
