Washington Post: Romney’s 12-million job promise has garnered a lot of attention. We became interested in this ad after a reader asked whether the campaign had provided much detail on how he would reach this total …

…. the candidate’s personal accounting for this figure in this campaign ad is based on different figures and long-range timelines stretching as long as a decade — which in two cases are based on studies that did not even evaluate Romney’s economic plan. The numbers may still add up to 12 million, but they aren’t the same thing — not by a long shot.

… Clearly, some clever campaign staffer thought it would be nice to match up poll-tested themes such as “energy independence,” “tax reform” and “cracking down on China” with actual job numbers. We just find it puzzling that Romney agreed to personally utter these words without asking more questions about the math behind them.

Greg Sargent: …. Let’s recap what Kessler has discovered here. The plan that is central to Romney’s candidacy on the most important issue of this election — jobs — is a complete sham. This is every bit as bad — or worse — than Romney’s claim to have created 100,000 jobs at Bain, or his vow to cut spending by eliminating whole agencies without saying which ones, or his refusal to say how he’ll pay for his tax cuts.

This could not have come at a better time for Obama. Here is the evidence he needs to spell out as clearly as possible that Romney is peddling economic hokum to the American people. Any fair reading of the backup the Romney campaign itself supplied for his plan reveals that it is nothing but a bill of goods. Obama needs to seize on this in a big way. This should be a big story.

Oh, and by the way: Economists have evaluated Obama’s jobs plan. And they concluded it would create one to two million jobs. The bottom line is simple: One candidate has a jobs plan, and the other doesn’t.

Steve Benen: Just at a surface level, the idea of Paul Ryan stopping by a soup kitchen is strange, if not ridiculous. The right-wing congressman, a proud admirer of Ayn Rand’s philosophy, no doubt sees soup kitchens as outlets that create dependency. This is, after all, the “don’t simply feed fish” guy.

…. given this background, it took real chutzpah for Ryan to show up at an Ohio soup kitchen, smile for the cameras, and pretend to do real work…

… Like most Romney/Ryan attempts to appear compassionate towards the less fortunate – folks Mitt Romney himself condemned in his infamous “47 percent” video – the photo-op was just for show.

NYT:  It is no secret that Mitt Romney and his running-mate, Representative Paul Ryan, are opponents of abortion rights …. they would move to take away a fundamental right that American women have had for nearly 40 years.

Mr. Romney has called for overturning Roe v. Wade … The result would turn back the clock to the days before Roe v. Wade when abortion was legal only in some states, but not in others…. We do not need to guess about the brutal consequences of overturning Roe. We know from our own country’s pre-Roe history and from the experience around the world. Women desperate to end a pregnancy would find a way to do so …. Some women would die.

Mr. Romney knows this, or at least he used to. Running for the United States Senate in Massachusetts in 1994 against Edward Kennedy, Mr. Romney spoke of a young woman, a close relative, who died years before as result of complications from an illegal abortion to underscore his now-extinct support for Roe v. Wade …. when the young woman passed away, her parents requested that donations be made in her honor to Planned Parenthood. That’s the same invaluable family-planning group that Mr. Romney has pledged to defund once in the White House.

    Congrats, Bernie & Relellit!

Good Morning/Evening TODobots! A very HAPPY TUESDAY to you all!

Not that I’m superstitious or anything, but I chose CAUTIOUSLY not to join in the 14 millon celebration …YET. Of course, I’m not going to admit that I was playing with the idea of coming out of retirement and camping by the door to be that 14 millionth arrival. Problem is, I haven’t figured out how to time that. Any quick suggestions? Speak now or forever hold your peace – we are getting really, really close!

Hey Chips, is there a bell that goes off at the defining entry? And do you get a ticket to sit/stand in the front row of the President’s FINAL campaign speech, after you have made a $14 or $140 skill-testing donation through one of our TOD fund raisers?

Hey, wait a minute! Did TODville get a facelift? Little tucks here and there? Is that where Chips Chica was this morning – messing with the non-existent wrinkles? Ms Chips, please don’t mess with the product! I don’t want to wander home and stumble into any of the furniture because it’s been shifted slightly, especially if I’m wandering in in the dark!!!! Hands off!

Oh, I forgot (not really). Good Morning, Ms Chips! ;) ;)

So that’s where my glasses went!! Chips would you please leave my glasses where I put them so they’ll be there on my return? Thank you. (We won’t of course mention that there are times they are on my head while I’m busy looking for them. That’s irrelevant.)

Chips, font to the right, and font in comments were smaller and sharper. Side bar with other blogs was narrower. They seem back to normal size now. No, it wasn’t all in my head. There’s no extra storage space there. And, yes Pamela, I’m alright …….I think/hope. Have yourself a great day at work!

:-) You’re a hoot VC! I honestly didn’t notice any changes today, but a couple of peculiar changes appeared alright the last week, eg I’m seeing a thin grey line, to the left of PBO’s image in the banner, in Firefox but not in Safari. A couple of other sidebar thingies looked different too earlier in the week, so it MIGHT not be your eyes!

Of course it’s not my eyes, CC! They work perfectly fine, when they work and if you don’t concern yourself with the blur around the edges. I am in Firefox and I do have the thin grey line. I guess someone at Firefox has been having some fun this week. Well, I’m not going to complain as long as they don’t shift things too far out of alignment, especially at the wrong time (like on the days of speeches etc). All’s well now, Thank you.

I saw this first on Twitter and I’ve gone away and come back to this tweet a couple of times. You know the reason I’ve hesitated to retweet it? It puts Ryan’s fakery alongside the Obamas’ service and gives the fakery a level of prominence that to me is insulting. You see, even tho their service produce photo-ops I don’t believe that’s why the Obamas do it, while it’s clear why Ryan DIDN’T even serve in any way! (In fact he created extra laundry for the volunteers by messing with those nice white aprons.)

Anderson Cooper Takes Down Mitt Romney’s Secret Tax Plan

    By: Sarah Jones

    ————————

The truth is catching up to Mitt Romney.

The night before the second presidential debate, Anderson Cooper took down Mitt Romney’s false claim that six studies show his $5 trillion in tax cuts for the rich can be paid for without raising middle class taxes or adding to the deficit as George W Bush’s tax cuts did.
    .
    .
In the first debate, Romney just flat out denied the very existence of his $250,000 tax cuts for the rich, but unfortunately for Romney, the media is starting to catch up to Mitt Romney’s lies. To give you an idea how egregious Romney’s secret tax plan claims are, even Fox News is calling the campaign out for failure to disclose details.

I doubt that being called out over and over again will put a dent in Romney’s willingness to look Americans in the eye and lie to them tonight. After all, this is the same Mitt Romney who was called out yesterday by an aide to his father, who accused Romney of saying anything to anyone for the win.

Romney is so desperate to be liked and so willing to be used that he fools even himself in thinking that he can get away with lying on this level for an entire presidential campaign. In order to support Romney’s tax plan, you have to support Bush’s economic leadership and want to double down on a bigger deficit for more tax cuts for the rich. Any takers?

Hey everyone, I saw a few of you in the last post mentioning lurkers who only seem to turn up here when things are tough – and all they offer are a list of, eh, ‘concerns’.

After the first debate a bunch of them suddenly appeared, and when I checked back, out of curiosity, on any of their previous comments here – not many – noticed a bit of a hair-on-fire trend.

I’ve no clue if they were all trolls, some of them certainly were (eg the ‘lurker’ who signed in under three different names to say how badly VP Biden was struggling against Ryan during their debate…. I kid you not. The person even changed gender, which was quite a feat).

Any way, regulars only tonight, if you don’t mind. Tonight’s not the night to suddently de-lurk.

    • October 16, 2012 at 9:56 am

President Obama has my vote so whatever happens tonight makes no difference to me. Let’s get our voices out there in praising President Obama’s debate performance to drown out the haters. Romney being able to lie rapidly (Gish Gallop) through some debates does not make him Presidential.

The Presidsent will be fine,we just have to have his back, send good vibes and just leave it to him. I am worried about the lady moderator though because she is a R but I hope she understands what she is there to do. Peace and love to all.

Ah, I know what you mean Pat. To be honest, I had my own concerns after the first debate, and shared them here, and I’d hate for any regulars to feel they can’t say what’s on their minds too. But we definitely could do without the hair-on-fire stuff, especially from lurkers who only emerge to post those kind of comments.

For all you history buffs out there:) http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/14/opinion/sunday/the-self-destruction-of-the-1-percent.html?_r=0

IN the early 14th century, Venice was one of the richest cities in Europe. At the heart of its economy was the colleganza, a basic form of joint-stock company created to finance a single trade expedition. The brilliance of the colleganza was that it opened the economy to new entrants, allowing risk-taking entrepreneurs to share in the financial upside with the established businessmen who financed their merchant voyages.

Venice’s elites were the chief beneficiaries. Like all open economies, theirs was turbulent. Today, we think of social mobility as a good thing. But if you are on top, mobility also means competition. In 1315, when the Venetian city-state was at the height of its economic powers, the upper class acted to lock in its privileges, putting a formal stop to social mobility with the publication of the Libro d’Oro, or Book of Gold, an official register of the nobility. If you weren’t on it, you couldn’t join the ruling oligarchy.

The political shift, which had begun nearly two decades earlier, was so striking a change that the Venetians gave it a name: La Serrata, or the closure. It wasn’t long before the political Serrata became an economic one, too. Under the control of the oligarchs, Venice gradually cut off commercial opportunities for new entrants. Eventually, the colleganza was banned. The reigning elites were acting in their immediate self-interest, but in the longer term, La Serrata was the beginning of the end for them, and for Venetian prosperity more generally. By 1500, Venice’s population was smaller than it had been in 1330. In the 17th and 18th centuries, as the rest of Europe grew, the city continued to shrink.

    snip/
Even as the winner-take-all economy has enriched those at the very top, their tax burden has lightened. Tolerance for high executive compensation has increased, even as the legal powers of unions have been weakened and an intellectual case against them has been relentlessly advanced by plutocrat-financed think tanks. In the 1950s, the marginal income tax rate for those at the top of the distribution soared above 90 percent, a figure that today makes even Democrats flinch. Meanwhile, of the 400 richest taxpayers in 2009, 6 paid no federal income tax at all, and 27 paid 10 percent or less. None paid more than 35 percent.

    Read the whole thing…..:)

Ayn Rand Sez: Fake-Wash Some Dishes

    ////

I will leave you with some scripture that Paul Ryan should already be familiar with but apparently doesn’t care about.

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” – Gospel According to Matthew, Chapter 6, Verses 1:4

According to Jesus, Paul Ryan is a hypocrite who will get no reward from his Father in Heaven.

[Adding a comment to this Booman post]:

Yes, indeed, “scrub” those (clean) soup kitchen pots, Ryan boy, deceive the rubes and fools, sell that swampland. A perfect example of today’s “conservative” male in action. He even gets the wife and kids into the fake photo op as props! The pious soup kitchen family cleans up….all a fraud.
Who the hell would do this? Absolute moral bankruptcy.

As Rmoney and Ryan boy continue to build toward their eking out of 270 EV and 50.1%, no one really can say they didn’t know what brazen liars and frauds these two psychopaths are. This latest “conservative” con game was clearly presented to the American Boob, all one needed was a functioning brain to perceive it.

Okay, I know this is Rasmussen, but I do believe it is interesting. After trailing Romney for the past several days in their swing state polling, PBO today moved ahead of Romney by 2 points. We know Rasmussen’s history of, closer to elections, their changing their methods or something to start aligning with reality.
But more important, it continues to show what other polls have shown, Romney’s post debate bounce is gone. And since it is Rasmussen, it is probably and actual +4-6 for PBO.

      [Commenter @ M&H post]:

Right on, Bo – Not only untrustworthy to serve, but, as far as I can tell, without a clue as to what governing might be about. If he looks at this country as he seems to look at everything else, as CEO of a company that specializes in LBOs, he sees only a collection of “units” (the several States), already cluttered by a “workforce” that is 47% slackers and ne’er-do-wells, ready to be stripped down even further, made “lean” and looking falsely profitable, and then sold to the highest bidder. The only question is whether they will go to China, India, or one of the many emirates – and how much personal wealth he and his “fellow investors” will make on each and every one of them. (Utah, however, might remain off the table… And maybe Wisconsin, Texas, and possibly Nevada – or at least Las Vegas.)

And, as Helen says, I mean it. Really.

I don’t know if anyone remembers earlier in the year when some of us were begging (on Twitter) for a PeoplesPAC, but it looks like there is one now – the AD Your Voice.com Chips highlights above might be the closest we’ll get. I’m sure there are talented TODobots who can submit videos. I’m not one BUT I HOPE SOME OF YOU HERE WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY OFFERED. Please! When I was younger and trying to find myself I worked as a security guard in a homeless shelter in Miami Florida knows as Camillus House. Working in a homeless shelter you see man at his worst and at his best on a daily basis. I remember walking volunteers inside the shelter and the look of fear in their eyes is something I will never forget, but what made me feel good about humanity was that even though they had fear they kept coming back to volunteer. Before Paul Ryan went to that soup kitchen to help feed the hungry, I thought he was just another politician trying to get a photo-op helping homeless people. But what he did speaks to something more deceitful and dishonorable, it speaks to what is in his heart. If Paul Ryan has an ounce of dignity left in his corrupted soul he should beg for forgiveness from everyone he has offended by this deplorable stunt.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Seimone Augustus has always preferred to stay out of the public eye even as her basketball career has taken her to the heights of an Olympic gold medal and a WNBA championship.

With her adopted home state of Minnesota considering a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, the Lynx star is now becoming a vocal proponent of equal rights for gays.

After all, she has her own wedding coming up, to longtime girlfriend LaTaya Varner.

    /////

Augustus and Varner plan to be married in May, and they have dreamed of a celebration at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Varner is doing most of the planning, aside from the dessert on the menu and the shoes on Augustus’ feet.

“That’s the only thing I want,” Augustus said. “Red velvet cake and Chuck Taylors.”

The 7 yrs old Honey Boo Boo on Jimmy Kimmel on ABC last night, gave her Rednieckerized……I am sure that I spelled it wrong, but she gave her endorsement to “Barack Obama”. I don’t like reality shows and have Not watched one since REAL WORLD on MTV went nuts….back in 1990s.

The other joke is Ross Perot at 82yrs old endorsing Romney, a man who has outsourced jobs, what Perot fought for in the 1990s and a man who wants more wars in the Muslim world.

My joke was to connect the two. Now it doesn’t seem as funny.

    Hello TOD Family,

First of all I want to express my congratulations and my thanks to Chips, not only for reaching the 14 million, but for creating this incredible “home” for all of us. I can’t tell you how much it means to me and how often I have come home after a long day of voter registration or canvassing or phonebanking or just plain running around and have sat down at my computer with a cup of coffee to catch up on the news. Following the leads by our many excellent contributors, I have been able to access a lot of valuable information. My printer has not stopped for months – I am definitely a believer in providing as much information as possible to our volunteers and to the voters. So, once again, to Chips and all the TOD family, thank you!

October is my favorite month. I love the crisp air, the scent of apple cider, the lower temperatures and humidity – it always energizes me. And for the last three years, October has brought back the memories of the final weeks of the 2008 campaign. I had decided to spend time in a “battleground state” and so I packed a suitcase and left for Pennsylvania. Of course, in retrospect, everything looks much rosier than it actually was – but still these few weeks have forever changed my understanding of politics, campaigning and most of all my belief in the people who make up this country. I have no illusions about the very real evil that is part of our life, but in those few weeks I witnessed the common sense and the basic decency of everyday people in America. On Election night, 2008, I celebrated the victory of hope over despair, even as the economy tanked and the Great Recession started to take its toll. Driving home on November 5th, 2008 I made the decision to stay engaged, to support our newly elected President and to hold on to that incredible joy of having had a part in electing Barack Obama and all he brings to this country and to the world. So, it is October again and we are in the final phase of the President’s re-election campaign. Just as in 2008, the voices of dissent and opposition are getting shrill and the noise of instant experts and pollsters sometimes threaten my serenity. But I still believe in all the wonderful people I have met. As the President has said many times, it is still about hope, about shaping our future, about working together to build our economy and secure the American Dream for all our people. And I believe our President will lead this effort for the next four years!

Continuing my switch-off of the pundtwits! Smartypants:

“President Obama has expended a tremendous amount of energy over these last 4 years trying to keep himself from being consumed in the Washington bubble. He does that by reading at least 10 letters from ordinary Americans every night, visiting people in their homes/small businesses, having dinners with supporters and – to the dismay of the DC villagers – avoiding too much backslapping with them. I’d suggest that he does all that in order to keep his heart attuned to what really matters and why he chose to do this job in the first place.

That’s the well he will be drawing from tonight.”

How The Press Helped Romney Reinvent Himself

    By Eric Boehlert

    ——————————–

Analyzing the presidential campaign in the wake of the first debate, Time’s Mark Halperin wrote on October 10 that Mitt Romney’s sudden “rush to the center” politically had emerged as the key topic – “the central tactical issue”– for the Barack Obama’s team to address. Halperin stressed it would be a challenge for Democrats because the Romney’s campaign’s “brazen chutzpah knows no bounds.”

How odd. At the first debate Romney had so brashly reinvented himself by shifting his position on taxation, immigration and health care away from the Republican Party, that the onus was on Obama to counter Romney’s slick maneuver. In other words, Romney’s flip-flops, according to Halperin, were a major problem for the Obama campaign, not for the Republican who late in the game unveiled a new political persona. (Farewell “severely conservative.”)
    .
    .
See? Romney’s reinvention, his decision to alter his views on the central issues of the campaign weeks before Election Day, is “brilliant.” The brash flip-flopping doesn’t reflect poorly on the candidate or suggest that Romney’s unsure, or unprincipled, about his positions. Instead, it signals savvy politics and “crafty” campaigning.

For the final push of this campaign Mitt Romney is trying to reinvent himself as a moderate, less-scary Republican. And the press is helping him at every turn.
