Reuters: Groundbreaking on new homes surged in September to its fastest pace in more than four years, a sign the housing sector’s budding recovery is gaining traction and supporting the wider economic recovery.

Housing starts increased 15 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 872,000 units, beating even the most optimistic forecasts on Wall Street, Commerce Department data showed on Wednesday.

It was the quickest pace of groundbreaking since July 2008…

Groundbreaking on new homes surged in September to its fastest pace in more than four years, a sign the housing sector’s budding recovery is gaining traction and supporting the wider economic recovery…..

…. The unemployment rate is at its best point in four years; consumer confidence is at its best point in five years; the federal budget deficit is at its best point in four years. Just this week, reports on retail sales, industrial production, and new housing construction showed sharp and unexpected improvements.

This probably isn’t what Republicans wanted to hear…..

NYT: It has dawned on Mitt Romney that he has a problem with female voters. He just has no idea what to do about it, since it is the result of his positions on abortion, contraception, health services and many other issues. On Tuesday night, he bumbled his way through a cringe-inducing attempt to graft what he thinks should be 2012 talking points onto his 1952 sensibility.

…  Perhaps Mr. Romney forgot that he vetoed a bill as Massachusetts governor in 2005 that would have given women who were raped access to emergency contraception, or that he supported an amendment this year that would have allowed any business to opt out of the contraceptive mandate, or that he has said he would support a state constitutional amendment that would declare that life begins at conception — potentially making some kinds of contraceptives illegal….

…. then he started a slow, painful slide into one of the most bizarre comments on this issue we’ve ever heard, which became an instant Internet sensation….

EJ Dionne: …. For Obama’s supporters, the fact that the president played offense, had a strategy and seemed happy in his work was reason enough for elation. But the most electorally significant performance was Romney’s. Under pressure this time, the former Massachusetts governor displayed his least attractive sides. He engaged in pointless on-stage litigation of the debate rules. He repeatedly demonstrated his disrespect for both the president and Candy Crowley, the moderator. And Romney was just plain querulous when anyone dared question him about the gaping holes in his tax and budget plans.

…. In the second debate, the disguise fell. Romney revealed more of himself than he wanted to and asked voters to endorse a radical tax-cutting program without providing them the details that matter. Sketchy is one word for this. Deceptive is another.

Jennifer – I was on the call, too, and when he said the story about how having a political friend is like having a college kid – and that he’s about to graduate, and started saying that some of the people on the call have been with him for seven years – I got teary. He sounded tired, but energized, oddly. He knows this is the final stretch, and one way or another, he’ll never have to campaign again. He’ll never have to go up against the unworthy like Romney and try and convince half the country that they should vote for their interests instead of for their prejudices. And his team is so proud of him, and I’m glad the people who asked questions also told him how proud they were of his performance. Just a really nice call.

Why didn’t Tagg volunteer to take a swing at the people they call terrorists? I am so so sick and tired of these cowards who think that talking big makes them brave. Some one should tell Tagg that if he did dare take a swing at the President, he (Tagg) would certainly be the one who would end up on the floor begging for mercy. It seems that the Romney boys have inherited their father’s cowardly tactics of trying to bully people. Thankfully, we have a President and a Vice-President who are not easily intimidated by COWARDLY bullies.

Agree with both of you. I also loved his answer as to what to say to someone about who they should vote for as they are entering the voting booth. “We have to ask our President: who is fighting for us?” I think PBO continues to make a strong case for being the president who has fought and will fight for all of us.

Even my name and OFA member page were open, thanking me for joining the call! So, I left it on, missed every word, but was all the way IN, in Spirit! There was a lovely atmosphere in the car, and I told all the other commuters to chill and behave, as I had PBO in the car with me, and lots of Workers as well! I enjoyed it….

Ok, enough of my irreverent, marginally humorous crap! (For this ONE POST.) THE PRESIDENT sounded confident, thoughtful, determined, steadfast and matter-of-fact. Oh Ja! That IS Barack Obama! The final FEC fund-raising deadline is TONIGHT. I’m sure you all know that. This month-end doesn’t matter.

Constant fund-raising has to suck for someone as high-minded as the President. BUT IT MUST BE DONE and he has to do a lot of the heavy lifting. I WOULD say DONATE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN TONIGHT!! But all of us TOD-ers have been doing all that we can. But………….. if you CAN do some more?!!!

Just got off the phone with our President Barack Obama. We got a nice report from the field organizer. He gave a very upbeat report on the battleground states and said in every state we are ahead of where we were in 2008 in voter registration and early voting, requests for early voting. And in most states ahead of the GOP by large margins. There is a real push for final donations now with the FEC deadline looming. (I responded to the e-mail and gave an extra $100 today.) Then the President came on with his friendly voice and thanked everyone. He was upbeat about how things are moving but says they always knew it would be close. He responded to two questions. One woman asked where these late donations would be going. He said basically to field organization and GOTV, early voting, and also to rapid response Ads to respond to attacks. Then he made a joke and said, “Supporting a candidate for office can be like having a kid in college. Well, I’m about to graduate, but we still have one more election to win, and this is the most important one.” The second question was from a guy in Ohio. He asked “What is the one thing to tell someone who is still making up their mind?” The President paused and said, “Well, I have kids, and for anyone who has kids, what kind of country do you want them to live in? And what kind of president is going to help that happen?” He went on to say……” Anyone voting should think about the person in the oval office and whether they are thinking of you and your family, considering your needs and the needs of regular people first, rather than the special interests and lobbyists, when considering important decisions about Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security, Education, and all the other important needs that regular people have. He said, I am that that guy!! ” He thanked us all and said with our help we would all win this election and prevail for the good of the country.

It was a great call and so great to be included.

One thing that I loved was when he mentioned that perhaps some of you may have seen the debate last night and “I’m still trying to get the hang of it”. Dear God, who could have done better??? Hi Lisa. This has been bothering me all day. I really do not like to go here, but I need to. After the debate, Ann Romney came up and gave Mitt a kiss(whatever it was), and as POB was going to meet FLOTUS, Ms. Ann looked right pass POTUS and gave him a scathing look and said a word into the side ear of her husband. It was very very ugly, in my opinion. I so wish I could slowly re-run the tape from C-SPAN.

So the remarks that are being reported as to what their son said does not surprise. I hope that the word gets to the SS. I really am serious. I do not usually share things like this on this site, but this I saw with my own eyes, and it sent old southern ugly and hateful chills memories through my spirit. I wish someone could see the tape and tell me that I did not see this. But I did. HZ

I don’t know if this was brought up in an earlier thread, but I think it may be comforting to many of you.

Kos article on that Gallup LV poll. Said he looked into the cross tabs on yesterday’s where Romney reached 50. The country was divided into 4 parts East, Midwest, West and South. In the first 2 Obama was leading 52-48 and 53-47 in the West. But in the South he trailed 61-37, thus pulling him down considerably. With the exception of Florida, Obama will never win those states, but he leads in the areas that contain the states that matter. And the 51 today for Romney was all taken before the debate.

That Romney gang sure have lots of class don’t they. I guess Tagg would do like dear old dad did to that teen-ager who Mitt had down other guys to hold down as he cut the guy hair. Cause Tagg wouldn’t be man enough to do it himself. It shows money can’t buy class.

Anniebella, it does shows that money can’t buy class, but money(that we the people pay) would have brought some arse last night, SS detail, if this little worm would have even gotten close to POTUS with this type of attitude. SS detail reads every move one makes, and surely they have a keen sense of what a person is displaying around POTUS. That would have been some heavy duty s… going down last night.

I apology for my attitude tonight, but I sense this crap from Mrs. R. I know this crap when I see it.

So I will leave it and think on good things because I am filling my space up with too much right now.
Everyone have a great evening and get some rest because we still have to move FORWARD. I did my donating to DCCC and POB. I am broke now until payday, but we will have what we need.

Howdy O’s!!! It’s been a few great getting up days since I last visited TOD town. I enjoyed the debate with #2 and we both howled at the women in a binder blunder. I was very impressed with PBO coming to the defense of his foreign affairs team. He called him out for lying at every turn. He is a mighty fine person and it showed. John Kerry did an excellent prep job and this time PBO had his National Security adviser in the prep sessions. They anticipated Mitt’s attack and allowed him to hurl himself right of the cliff. Mitt aged about 10 years in front of our eyes during the debate. His Achilles heel is being challenged, that’s the biggest affront a person could do to him. Judging by the family’s reaction, they are just a richer version of the Palin gang.

My political take today is that the so-called undecideds is getting way too much attention. It seems they describe themselves that way just to have the nation’s eyes on them at the highest level. They are not undecided, because in this age of the internet, there is no reason to still need more information to make a decision. That may have worked so late in a election in the days of the pony express, but now it just shows their incompetence. The AA guy who asked PBO why should he vote for him again, later said on CSPAN that he was a policeman. The guy who sits around the office talking about international stuff, was an obvious lean Repub. I think it should be declared likely voters who get to ask the opposing candidate a question. At least those folks have actually invested time and effort in the process.

Lawrence O’Donnell is going to have a segment tonight on the Last Word, specifically about those so called “undecided” focus groups and why having “undecideds” in those groups is not the best idea. I’m sure L O’Donnell suspects as most of us do, that these people are bunch of professional Republican con artists.

Being undecided gives them a lot of attention and can look good for the GOP if they go their way. All of the cheating that goes on with the GOP means that we now suspect them of every Kind of cheating since they are so involved in voter suppression. They have stacked their campaigns with bussed in people before too.
I remember was it SNL doing a segment on the undecided voters and it was cute? Could have been Jon Stewart or Colbert so am not sure where I saw it but the undecided were asking questions like who is running and that level question. The NBC poll with 8 people after the debate where 2 committed one for each candidate. The others were still undecided mostly seemed to lean towards Mitt. The women were even questioned about the fair pay and it didn’t bother them as they only liked his job plan.

Really, Rachel and Dan Rather wondering about who is running campaign and why so many missteps. Romney and his ilk feel entitled to belittle and talk down to anyone who don’t agree with them or aren’t rich white males. They don’t feel it necessary to listen to anyone’s opinion but the voices in their own heads and if they speak loudly enough or put more money into it the problem will go away. I could see him trying to make my President wither and wilt last night. He acted like President Obama was a recalcitrant child that had to be put in his place. My one question for these multimillionaires and multibillionaires is how much money do you need? How many houses, cars, wives, children, roads, buildings, islands are enough? The workers are the one’s who got you there and you “should dance with the one who brung you” instead of downsizing or moving you jobs offshore to get more money.

    Ok I feel better now.

I think this Tagg Romney’s comment about wanting to take a swing at PBO should be all over the news and twitter and decried because 1) it is disrespectful to talk about POTUS that way and 2) it is an incitement to violence.
Can we get this out there on twitter to get this to be talked about and for Tagg to apologize?
This is so not right and it is a clear signal to all the loonies on the right that it is OK for them to think that they can think to attack POTUS ohysically.

In my opinion this deserves a talk from SS to Tagg.

“I even wrote about it. I wrote about how even though he doesn’t share the history of the Oliver Browns and Homer Plessys and Rosa Parkses, he nonetheless inherited their burdens. I wrote about how even though his forebears didn’t endure the whips, the slashes, the examples made out ofs, or the hangings, he nonetheless inherited the complicated world left in their wake. I got upset again; I shed another tear as I thought of the serious black men throughout the country right now with ephemerally clenched jaws and stiffened fists upon seeing the Tagg Romney headline. ”

          There’s more.

          • 176 dudette9t9
            October 17, 2012 at 11:39 pm

“…You know, he suffers the indignities. The calls for birth certificates. The effigies outside his field offices. The jokes about his father’s birthplace. The proclamations that he is not smart, or “doesn’t think like us”. And he just takes it. Because he has to. Because there is no precedent for him. He is the standard bearer. He sets the example. He is the mountaintop. The one with whom the buck stops.

When Barack Obama took this office, he accepted a burden greater than that of any other man on Earth, black or otherwise. And for that, history will someday jump out of its seat and judge him not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character. He fights for that each day, just by being him. My jaw now softened, my fists unclenched, I set my eyes upon the dream, knowing it will someday come.

At first, I got upset. And then I started pacing. And then I started crying. But now, I just feel fine. “

Morning Bobfr! I think were they to do that it would totally shift the focus of the election, something we don’t need right now. Plus it would polarize a large(R) section of the electorate. Tagg responded to a question if I remember correctly. His response would seem ‘natural’ to a whole slew of ‘men’. He didn’t move towards PBO. He wasn’t in his face. He answered a question posed by an announcer. Of course his answer revealed thinking that’s skewered, but what else is new – the whole Romney bunch seem skewered to me! IMO we can deride them on Twitter to our heart’s content, but I don’t want the admin to be seen as acting defensively in situations like these. In fact, I want the Romneys and their campaign to fully showcase who and what they are before Nov 6, so I’m all for whatever exposure they get. There IS something odd about the lot of them, and it isn’t their wealth. ‘Bring ‘em on’ is my motto. Let them strut their stuff! Let the American people look, listen, and be revolted….many will be. Start to respond at an administrative level to stuff like this and I think there will be lots of righteous indignation…for the wrong guy. Just my feeling, for what it’s worth.

Romney Warned Against Pointing Fingers At Bush Administration After 9/11 Attacks

    ————————————

During a 2004 National Press Club luncheon, Romney was asked to address the 9/11 Commission’s finding of serious intelligence failures on the part of the US government in the run-up to the attacks. He responded that it is easy, but ultimately not particularly helpful, to blame different parts of the government for the attack:

It’s very easy, it is extraordinarily easy to point fingers and say, ‘Why, this part of government knew this and it didn’t tell that part.’ And, ‘These people here haven’t learned that.’ Well, the reason those barriers exist is for legitimate purpose in a world that was pre-September 11th. And judging our intelligence by post- September 11th conditions is something we have to do carefully. We do that to help us get better, and to the extent we find criticism in the kind of work that I’ve had to do and others are doing, it should be focused on how we can make ourselves more effective in the post-9/11 world. But trying to judge what happened pre-9/11 by post-9/11 knowledge is probably not terribly fruitful.
    .
    .
While the Romney campaign has been routinely accusing the administration of deliberately misleading Americans on Libya, a detailed timeline of the events suggests that isn’t the case.

“Right now, there is a choice going on in America, and I’m happy that we live in a country where we all participate in that process. For me, President Obama is our best choice because he has a vision of the United States as a place where we are all in this together. We’re still living through very hard times but justice, equality and real freedom are not always a tide rushing in. They are more often a slow march, inch by inch, day after long day. I believe President Obama feels these days in his bones and has the strength to live them with us and to lead us to a country “…where no one crowds you and no one goes it alone.”

That’s why I plan to be in Ohio and Iowa supporting the re-election of President Obama to lead our country for the next four years.”

Mika of Morning Joe grew some spine this morning. I just caught some of her on Morning Joe and the Today Show this morning and she went to toe-to-toe with Joe, Mark Halperin, Willie and Steve Rattner on women’s issues. She kept reeling off accomplishments of the Obama administration in regards to women and the economy. She skewered Romney and his lack of pro-women policies when he was Gov. of MA and now.

I’m glad that the Today Show skyped her and Joe in this morning to a broader audience. She pointed out the bigger picture about Romney’s Binders Full of Women comment and why it’s offensive, she pointed out that under Pres. Obama unemployment has gone down, housing foreclosures are down, housing prices are up, consumer confidence is up, manufacturing has increased, he signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, he created a council on women and girls, she just went on and on and on.

My jaw dropped. She was trending on twitter like fire.

Damn…..Cher was fired up this morning at the condescending assholes on Morning Joe trying telling Mika that she knows nothing about what women want in the election. Halperin, Willie Geist, and Joe were assholes. They basically did all but pat her on the head and tell her she belongs in the kitchen making dinner. They defended Romney’s comments about women on the show. They apparently got flooded with calls and emails and tweets from women who were ANGRY and then they began to back down. Joe even replied to Cher’s tweets on twitter. Cher was rightfully MAD.

The GOP is always trying to change the conversation. Yes, Meeka is coming out of her silence. I was so shocked Wednesday morning when she told Joe, you had so much to say about the last debate, why are you not talking now? I could not believe my ears. Women issues are very much economic issues. They are financially inter-related. The cost of having a child whether married or not; it will cost your pocket. Health issues are finance issues.
All we could hear from the GOP for about a year was about the economy and oh the employment numbers and such will determine whether President Obama gets a second term. Now that the numbers are working in this country favor, what does the GOP pigeon hole on, the attack on a embassy. One issue of many foreign policy issues that occur on a continual basis every day. Willard can’t even go outside of this country without offending the visiting country. Words are important and our sons and daughters will be in another war fooling with Willard.

The GOP loves to criticize, can not and will not offer solutions to make things better, Most of the talk shows on CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and the others are so freaking tiresome. The least that they could do to help the American people is to report the truth and not embellish and prop up and cover for the GOP.

The last performance by Willard during the debate should make each American very afraid of him. He has no self control and he thinks every thing revolves around him. Willard is dangerous and he knows that this is his last rah rah and he is pulling out all of the stops. He does not respect women and his religious beliefs showed up at this last debate. And how can any AA support him is beyond my comprehension.Oh Willard shares my views and my response to the AA is that you don’t have much of a view.

Willard does not love the American people. He has a disdain for most of them and he looks at the 47% as parasites who should just go away and die.

And for Willard son who threatened the President, consider that threat over your own head buster. You meant it for evil for our President, but you do foolish talk and those words are for you, son. Tells me how much home training you have received. You couldn’t take the mental azz whopping your dad was receiving, but you so willing to engage in physical confrontation. How immature and child like. You gon beat up someone because of the truth. How disgusting is your behavior.
