NYT: If Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate, Representative Paul Ryan, were to win next month’s election, the harm to women’s reproductive rights would extend far beyond the borders of the United States.

In this country, they would support the recriminalization of abortion with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and they would limit access to contraception and other services. But they have also promised to promote policies abroad that would affect millions of women in the world’s poorest countries, where lack of access to contraception, prenatal care and competent help at childbirth often results in serious illness and thousands of deaths yearly. And the wreckage would begin on Day 1 of a Romney administration.

….. House Republicans want to cut the nation’s investment in international family planning severely. Mr. Romney’s record of bending to suit the most extreme elements of the Republican Party suggests that he may well go along on this critical issue as well.

NYT: Three leading Democratic “super PACs” raised more money in September than in any other month this election cycle, officials said, underscoring the growing willingness of wealthy Democrats to bankroll groups whose existence they had long opposed.

Priorities USA Action, the group backing President Obama, will report raising $15.2 million in September, thanks in part to aggressive fund-raising by party leaders like former President Bill Clinton and Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago. The group has already reserved millions of dollars in advertising for the closing weeks of the campaign.

Majority PAC, which supports Senate Democrats, raised $10.4 million in September and has brought in an additional $9.7 million through mid-October, officials announced on Friday, a period during which the party’s chances of holding a majority in the chamber appeared to be improving. House Majority PAC, the Congressional Democrats’ super PAC arm, raised $5.9 million, a figure the group said it was on pace to double this month.

Racine, Oct 19 (Gregory Shaver/Journal Times)

The Journal Times: Celia Poole was outside Memorial Hall at 4:15 a.m. Friday waiting to get inside to see first lady Michelle Obama. When the doors opened at 10:30 a.m. she was one of the first inside and she was followed by approximately 2,500 more people.

…. So many people were inside that approximately 400 people were directed to the hall’s basement, where they were told they could hear the first lady but there was no video screen to see her.

But the first lady did not ignore those supporters. Even before she went up to the main floor and started talking to the crowd there, she went downstairs.

Linetta Davis, 38, an 8th grade teacher from Milwaukee who was in the basement, said it meant a lot for Obama to go downstairs. “With all the political discussion going on right now, it’s easy to feel overlooked,” Davis said, “but for the first lady to be aware people were downstairs and to acknowledge them meant a lot.” If she had been on the fence about who to vote for, she said that would have been a turning point for her.

Wausau Daily Herald: …. The first lady appealed to the crowd — 980 people, plus 600 more in an overflow room — at Friday’s rally to vote early, when early voting starts Monday. And she asked the audience to encourage others to vote for her husband, noting that an election can be decided by just a few votes in each ward.

      Good morning everyone…

If you’ve got a Safeway grocery store in your area, this is important…

Yesterday I met a woman who works at one of the stores in my City and she was furious…

All Safeway workers she told me, recently received a corporate memo telling them they had to vote for Mitt Romney or else…

Safeway stores is now owned by the Mormon church…

She loves and will be voting for President Obama, but she is very concerned about some of her coworkers – a few recently naturalized immigrants who are simply petrified…

We must counter this in our own quiet way by engaging people especially low-information voters who might get caught up in dubious work environments such as this…

Remind them that their ballots are secret and sacred and nobody will ever know who they vote for…

Most importantly, draw a clear picture of what a world completely taken over and controlled by oppressive, controlling slave masters like the management and ownership of Safeway would wrought courtesy of a Mitt Romney type…

If these wealthy, entitled plutocrats are this brazenly manipulative, abusive and oppressive right now, imagine what life would be like in a world where they have free reign, without checks, balances or repercussions…

President Obama is the only person standing between an America where everyone still has some semblance of rights and opportunity – and that being pushed for by Mitt Romney and the evil plutocrats and corporations desperately trying to buy him the presidency to do their bidding…

Chi, that just needs to get out there. These looser manipulating Safeway owners have to be stopped. No Safeway where I live, but is that related to Dominicks????

I understand Safeway has been owned by the Mormin church for a very long time. I have avoided the chain for several years now. These employees ought to forward the memo to the DOJ, as I’m sure this s very much in violation of many rights.

Is there someone who works there who would feel confident in calling the FBI? I’m pretty sure voter intimidation is a federal crime. The DOJ is going after these people, and that needs to occur before Nov. 6, not after, or we’ll end up with another election like we had in 2000.

I felt the same way the morning after Obama’s brilliant second debate. What came to me immediately (as a retired singer and still lover of choral music) “This is the day that the Lord hath made … Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

It’s actually the 118th psalm and has been used in many choral works but the version I remember best is in The Messiah, with the voices doing a complicated fugue of “This is the day…this is the day…this is the day that the Lord hath made.”

Of course Obama was the one who made that wonderful day for me, with perhaps the Lord and millions of prayers from religions and faiths all over the world helping. It’s a morning I’ll remember for a long, long time.

I have no doubt that he will be. Notice that the O-camp has been low key on this issue, while the MSM thrashes about…they’re not giving the MSM or Willard any clues as to what they know, or how they’re gonna approach this – they’re saving their cards for the debate when PBO serves Romney a nice 7-course dinner of STFU in front of the entire world. Then the DEM surrogates will be out on the TV screen to reinforce what PBO said.

    • 56 57andfemale
      October 20, 2012 at 10:26 am

I cannot believe PBO won’t be prepared. Repubs and R&R think they’ve laid the trap.

Yesterday there was another story making the administration look bad on Libya. I literally had an anxiety attack over it.

The other thing that sent me over the edge: the regular headline news service that they use on progressive radio in Chicago continued the LIE that PBO said on Jon Stewart that the deaths of four Americans was not ‘optimal’. I practically ran the car into a lightpost. He said communication was not optimal, and yet national news services pick up the RW meme.

As my husband reminds me, it’s Barack Obama. But let’s not kid ourselves: They are out to take away PBO’s edge on foreign policy. and again I’m hearing from the left that PBO should crush on this issue, so if there’s one misstep will the whiny left implode again?

Read this 2009 story about BLACKWATER http://www.thenation.com/article/blackwater-founder-implicated-murder# LIBYA was designed to blemish PBO’s stellar record in foreign policy. Casino mogul Adelson pledges $100 million to mittnocchio campaign http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/06/14/499513/billionaire-adelson-pledges-unlimited-campaign-contributions-to-mitt-romney/ some of the ME protesters report they were paid http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/15/world/meast/egypt-us-embassy-protests/index.html I call this a SLO MO coup d’etat in the US, initiated by the GOPKKK. Their international plan was to wreak havoc in the ME and their national plan was to supress and deny the right of American citizens their right to vote. After PBO’s re-election, I imagine a lot of folks are going to jail.

      • 58 HZ
        October 20, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Morning/Afternoon 57andfemale. He will be prepared. He knows the slimes (my word not POB’s) he is working with in all of this. However, POB has to look at this issue from all angles of his Foreign Policy. Remember, POB is an attorney and a brilliant one. He is a thinker. He has to have the backs of the men and women serving him all over this country and in every corner of the world, and he really takes that jobs seriously, unlike the memories that we have as a nation of a previous Administration. Did you see the fire in his eyes and the fire in this words that he spoke to Mitten and the world last Tues., concerning the situation at hand. POB has this.

He knows that the vile acts and mind of KR is never going to stop until God shut it down. I meant that. So POB moves on, thinks deep, and acts with a clear precision to protect the Intelligence Dept., the CIA in all respects, and protect the families of these men and women who are working all day and night trying to get to the bother of this. And they will. So we might do him a big service to focus our energies on putting into our space one of wisdom filled with confidence to prove these people wrong and as little evil, disruptive disgraceful small minded men and we as they are.

There are 4 families trying to put their lives on a path of healing. They are waiting and listening to the contacts that they are receiving from POB and Sec. Clinton and when it is all done, POB will accomplish what he said he would do. “Bring whomever to justice.” Let us put our energies out for the families who lost precious love ones and for all of our men and women who are working to complile the facts for POTUS.

Let the talking heads, the vile and ugly men and women like Issa go straight to hell because they are showing us their hellish ways. We have not time to even give them space within our space. We have to focus on getting POB and VP Biden re-elected and get the House back so Issa can take his seat in his hellish mind and leave us alone. “Fret not thyself of evildoers.” Yes, I know it is not easy to live, but it is sure easy to believe it in your faith. I have seen it even in this pass week.

We are putting our energy around POB, VP Biden, FLOTUS, Dr. Jill Biden, all of the great surrogrates and each of our family members here to bring this home. We need the WH, back, the House, and a full and solid Senate. So let us do all that we can to make it happen. Pray, give, meditate, make calls, walk the streets, knock on doors, talk in the public spaces when opportunities arrive, phone family in other states, e mail friends and family in other states and tell them to get up and do something that will bring this home on Nov. 6, 2012 for sure.

(((((((((((((((((( I love you all so much. Now I need to eat something before my brother calls and check on me and make my calls It is raining here, so the joints are killing me, but Do Not Worry, I will tear it up in a few hours.))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))HZ

Pres Obama is really talking up the good economic news and that’s great because you know the media won’t focus on it. And I loved how in the weekly address he pointed out that Repubs in Congress were blocking progress on a bill to help homeowners. I think this is a great closing message strategy. Point to good economic news, remind voters of the measures he took and blame republicans for not helping, it helps not only him but down ballot Dems. Just think if Republicans had helped they could say they were partially responsible for the recovery. Now they can take no claim whatsoever, it was all done by Pres Obama and Dems. There are so many reasons why Pres Obama should be reelected and we all know what those are but not least of these is the fact the economy will continue to grow and get stronger (if we get past the fiscal cliff) and there is no way in heck I want a Pres Romney trying to take credit for what Pres Obama did. You know they will rewrite history. But I feel pretty confident that there will never be a Pres Romney!

Also, media elites say that Pres Obama doesn’t have a second term agenda but I thought Jonathan Cohen had a great article about that saying that he has laid out a vision for a second term but the reason it seems so “small bore” to some is that its really about protecting and expanding the bold steps he took over the last four years.

“To the extent Obama hasn’t laid out a “new” vision for the future, it’s because his new vision is the same as his old vision. As he’s said over and over again, including on Tuesday night, he believes government has a vital role to play in domestic policy—as a watchdog, guardian of economic security, and instigator of growth. The focus of his first term was enacting policies that would allow government to do this. Think financial regulation, universal health care, and the Recovery Act. His second term, necessarily and appropriately, would focus on pursing those same goals—whether by seeing the Affordable Care Act through to implementation or further boosting the economy through the American Jobs Act.” http://www.tnr.com/blog/plank/108849/obama-hasnt-laid-out-governing-vision-agenda-debate-hofstra

Think about it: building on health care reform, building on green energy alternatives, building on infrastructure initiatives, high speed rail, building on education reform and the list goes on. That’s a strong vision if I’ve ever heard one but the media is so superficial with their “Sputnik” moments: they can’t see the forest for the trees. Heaven help us but the death of journalism may be the death of our democracy and this morning I heard that Murdoch is trying to by the LA Times and Chicago Tribune!!! Some how we’ve got to stop the corporate takeover of our media but I don’t even now where to start.

Sorry, this was longer than I intended…guess I had a few things on my mind :)

    • 98 EricFive
      October 20, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Great post MB32. The media likes to “play dumb” when it comes to PBO. Left, right and center, they have all accused PBO of not saying something that he clearly said during a speech or interview. Some are lazy and just don’t pay attention. Most, however, are merely engaged in spin or pro-GOP propaganda. PBO has a clear vision for America’s future, and those that claim otherwise are LYING. The MSM is still propping up Mitt and serving as his communications arm (free of charge). PBO’s consistent decisive edge in polling of “registered voters” and >50 approval rating, tells me that voters are attracted to PBO’s message. This is in many ways similar to 2008, when everything was “GOOD NEWS FOR JOHN MCCAIN”. Then as now, polls which showed Sen. Obama up by 2 points were spun as bad news for Obama. SOme “liberal media” we have, huh?

This is something that drives me crazy. I’ve heard a ton of them claim that President Obama and Romney are almost identical on foreign policy. I scratch my head and wonder when I’ve ever heard President Obama claiming that pursuit of peace in the Middle East is a lost cause. Or if I’ve ever heard President Obama advocating nuking Iran to stop it from getting even nuclear CAPABILITY – which is Iran’s right under international law – as long as it’s using nuclear capability for energy only. President Obama has never said he wants to end foreign aid. President Obama has advocated bringing jobs back to the US and eliminating tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas. President Obama understands that there is value in embracing the emerging countries, because they represent new opportunities and a new world order – and accepting that fact is inevitable. President Obama believes in collaboration and building a working coalition to execute global security. President Obama wants to close Gitmo. President Obama understands that China and Brazil and India will rise, and that the US can provide some guidance to them on how to lead and be superpowers, caring for the well-being of people in those countries not yet as successful. President Obama doesn’t fear the changing political climate in the Middle East and he believes those countries should choose their own leaders and follow their own cultures (not elect US puppets).

Romney believes in “American Exceptionalism”, whatever that means – since he doesn’t believe in making American lives exceptional. Romney believes in bullying the world. He believes in investing his money overseas, and not in his own country. He believes in hiding his money so he doesn’t have to pay his fair share of taxes. He puts Israel’s security ahead of his own country. He doesn’t value American lives – whether its the soldiers he would send into war, or the diplomatic personnel in harm’s way. He’s surrounded himself with neocons from the Bush era. He believes in torture. He thinks his lawyers will authorize him to go to war. Romney believes in sending trillions to defense contractors, instead of utilizing diplomatic and development tools. Romney thinks Russia is America’s “#1 geopolitical foe”. Romney surrounds himself with people who don’t know what countries exist on the planet. And Romney and his family equate mission work and running for office with enlisting in war.

These two men are NOT alike, and the only reason why their positions are sometimes similar, is because Romney has no ideas of his own. He criticizes President Obama, and then when pressed, says he’d do the same thing as the President, only better because he’d be doing it. Same exit strategy for Afghanistan. Same approach with Syria. Same steps taken with China. Same trade agreements. No alternative to dealing with Libya.

The pictures are wonderful to see. And it was so nice of FLOTUS to take the time to go down stairs and speak with the crowd in the basement who couldn’t get up there in the room she was to speak. To me that was just so sweet of her.

Our OFA team is brilliant. Here’s their latest brainstorm to get college students to VOTE – they’ve started a college leaderboard competition!! From Dashboard:

Buffy Wicks, National Operation Vote Director, posted an announcement
If you’re a student, here’s an easy way you can do your part to help get out the vote: Join Campus Callers, a group of high school, college, and graduate students who are spreading the word about this election through the call tool. https://dashboard.barackobama.com/groups/2148-campus-callers

Join now, make some calls, and get your school on the leaderboard for the national campus call contest: http://www.barackobama.com/young-americans/campus-callers

Help spread the word and lets go win this!

I have my Romnesia comment. If he go before rich donors, tell them that 47% of Americans are free loaders, they always want something free from the Government, they don’t pay taxes, they won’t take responsibility for their lives. If he make statements like he is not concern about the poor, they have their safety net. All of a sudden we turn around and he is talking about how he care about the 100%. He think that we have forgotten what he said, but Mitt we don’t have Romnesia. It’s Mitt Romney who is suffering from Romnesia.

Morning TOD. Was going out for GOTV, but came down with sore throat. Phone banking on Thursday went well- those I was able to contact (most were not home….? ) were very emphatic about why we HAVE TO re-elect PBO, and are very aware of the opposition. Just want to say- PBO will win Monday’s debate hands down. Besides his momentum, he’s got the facts and experience, and phenomenal foresight. To those going out today, slay a tiger for me :-D.

Well howdie O’s!!!! A great getting up day again in TODdie town!! So great, that I’m going to do yard clean up work today. There’s brush on the north forty to clear and some battening of the hatches before the winter snow. I’ll be back later, probably sore, but invigorated.

My political take today is that #2 did get in to see PBO and said that when PBO said Romnesia the place was up for grabs. Then when he went through the litany of what symptoms were Romnesia, everyone was howling. The final straw was when he said Obamacare would help, everyone was clapping and hollering so loud, it was hilarious. She was close enough to get some real good pics of PBO, and near the press pool so was interviewed by ABC, Telemundo, a web publication, and managed to get a picture taken by the White House photographer. Here’s the link to her ABC interview, she’s at 1:24 mark: http://www.wjla.com/articles/2012/10/president-obama-to-rally-in-northern-virginia-friday-81183.html

I recall on September 16 defending Ambassador Rice on Twitter and being angrily accused by some so-called Obama supporters of “always defending these surrogates” I cautioned them that the media did not have all the facts, yet they still continued lambasting the administration.

As I said before, I have very little tolerance for Obama supporters who just run with MSM memes. I see them as a HUGE part of the problem.

I agree. I doubt they are really “supporters” of PBO. They seem TOO eager to abandon the President. Most of these people probably didn’t vote for PBO in 2008, for a variety of reasons, but are so quick to say “PBO has lost my vote” when the waters get the least bit choppy. These people crave attention and can easily get it by pretending to be a disappointed Obama voter (Squeaky Wheel Syndrome).

jeebus, it had to come this. fuck the banana ‘republic’ans.

United Nations-affiliated election monitors from Europe and central Asia will be at polling places around the U.S. looking for voter suppression activities by conservative groups, a concern raised by civil rights groups during a meeting this week. The intervention has drawn criticism from a prominent conservative-leaning group combating election fraud.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a United Nations partner on democratization and human rights projects, will deploy 44 observers around the county on Election Day to monitor an array of activities, including potential disputes at polling places.

Liberal-leaning civil rights groups met with representatives from the OSCE this week to raise their fears about what they say are systematic efforts to suppress minority voters likely to vote for President Obama.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the NAACP and the ACLU, among other groups, warned this month in a letter to Daan Everts, a senior official with OSCE, of “a coordinated political effort to disenfranchise millions of Americans — particularly traditionally disenfranchised groups like minorities.”

  63. October 20, 2012 at 12:44 pm

The pro-President Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action is out with a memo this morning detailing its plans for the final days, including the return of one of its toughest spots about Mitt Romney’s time at Bain.

The full thing is after the jump, but from the memo:

As we head to Election Day, Priorities USA Action is reinvigorating the discussion of Mitt Romney’s time in the private sector and the devastating impact he had on middle class Americans. For thousands of workers, the promises Romney is making to America today resemble the promises they heard from him when he took over their company. The result was devastation for middle class families while Romney and his wealthy investors made millions.

Throughout the summer, Priorities executed a $20 million campaign to expose Romney’s business record, where he and his partners made millions, even when they drove companies they took control of into bankruptcy, employees lost their jobs, and promises for health and retirement benefits were broken. The result was that Romney’s business experience became a significant liability.

As the campaigns are, the group is putting a premium on Ohio, and says their focus groups last week there showed that voters remembered well that particular Bain spot, in which a laid=off worker described building a stage by which officials told everyone the plant’s future, and described it as like building “my own coffin.”

Also notable is the group, which had planned to peel out of Florida and Wisconsin, has both states on its lists where the spot will run.

From the Obama campaign, a post-debate schedule that falls into the category of “You know it’s the final two weeks when …”:

On Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa, President Obama will kick off a two day, around the clock campaign blitz across six battleground states.  The “America Forward!” tour will crisscross the nation, reaching as many voters as possible about the critical choice in this election — moving America forward toward an economy built to last with a strong middle class versus going back to the same policies that crashed our economy in the first place.

The President believes we have to work for every vote, and so every door knock, every phone call, and every volunteer could mean the difference between continuing our path forward or going back.   On the “America Forward!” tour, the President will rally supporters, meet with volunteers, talk to undecided voters and cast his own ballot in this election.

After leaving Iowa on Wednesday, October 24, the President will rally voters in Denver, Colorado at the Meadow at City Park, followed by a late night grassroots event in Las Vegas, Nevada. The President will travel overnight to Tampa, Florida for a grassroots rally, and a tarmac event in Richmond, Virginia on Thursday.  As the President crisscrosses the nation, he will spend time on Air Force One calling undecided voters, rallying National Team Leaders and volunteers and continuously engaging with Americans across the country about the choice in this election.

Following the event in Richmond, the President will then travel to Chicago to cast his ballot and make history by being the first sitting President to vote early in person.  The President will end his two-day tour with an evening grassroots event in Cleveland, Ohio.

Three leading Democratic “super PACs” raised more money in September than in any other month this election cycle, officials said, underscoring the growing willingness of wealthy Democrats to bankroll groups whose existence they had long opposed.

“Democrats know that this race is even closer than we thought it would be, and if we’re going to close this deal everybody has to get involved,” said Bill Burton, a spokesman for Priorities USA.

Mr. Obama and the Democratic National Committee said they raised about $181 million in September, slightly more than Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee, which raised $170 million, according to officials. Mr. Obama’s campaign, filing on Friday, reported spending $115 million in September and ending the month with about $99 million in cash on hand for the rest of the campaign.

This is the last salvo fired at Romney, which has garnered widespread attention right before the last debate on Monday. This will almost garuntee a question regarding this line of attack from the president’ which will present the president a full throated opportunity to nail Romney on every position change throughout his career.

Remember, this president is calculating, he would not fire a shot like this if he didn’t have something up his sleeves.

I have been working on them all year. They both rushed to tell me this week that they had voted early, and voted for President Obama. And they were both very proud and quite overwhelmed casting their first votes. I’ve got one more right leaning friend whom I am holding out hope for – another new citizen just this year, and I plan to turn all my attention to her this week. (Her husband is a lost cause). They’re all right leaning because they’re all in the top 2%, and they’re all afraid of their taxes going up, and don’t want to “pay for people who are sitting at home, living off their tax dollars”. I just don’t understand this kind of short-sighted thinking. A society that ensures an acceptable living standard for the poorest of its citizens has more stability, more security – because everybody has something they want to protect. That’s the value of a strong middle class – it’s supports those fighting to get into the middle class and creates more opportunities for wealth across a broader base. It’s what a community is all about.

Anyway – two more votes for President Obama cast this week!
