Obama Debunks the Myth that He had a Supermajority in Congress for Two Years
By: Jason Easley
—————————
Because Republicans contested the election of Al Franken, when Obama was sworn into office there were 58 Democrats. A supermajority is composed of 2/3 the Senate, and since 60 voters are required to overcome the filibuster rules, Obama didn’t even have the basic majority that he needed in order to pass legislation when he took office.
This timeline from The War Room with Jennifer Granholm illustrates why Obama only had 60 Democratic votes for a brief period during his first year in office:
.
.
The idea that Obama had a two year supermajority is a lie wrapped around a Republican delusion.
Just like there are no numbers in Mitt Romney’s tax plan, and there is not a Republican jobs bill that isn’t a tax cut in disguise, Barack Obama never had a two year supermajority in Congress.
Didn’t read the article cuz all of us remember Al Franken’s atleast 6 month fight in courts and recounts to make it to the Senate. I also remember that 2 of the so called majority votes were Independents who sometimes vote with the Dems. Wasn’t one of them Lieberman who just campaigned with McCain? I also remember when the ACA was voted for an older Dem had to be brought in either in his wheelchair or stretcher to make the vote. Kennedy was diagnosed with cancer and out most of the time too. Dems don’t usually vote as a block like GOP has managed with their party. There are many conservative Dems that are more closely aligned with the GOP and vote with them. Hard to say they really could ever have a majority based on Dems history.
THE FIRST PRINCIPLE OF JOURNALISM IS TO TELL THE TRUTH
Dan Rather called out the press last night on The Rachel Maddow Show and Joan Walsh of Salon called out the press in her article about Romney after the third debate. Mitt Romney’s first campaign ad about President Obama was a lie and he has been lying nonstop since then. Two weeks before the election a few journalists are calling out their colleagues. This is just appalling. Talk about a delayed reaction.
I have to give props to Rachel Maddow because she has said on so many occasions during the campaign that a particular issue (fill in the blank) is a test for the media. But the beltway CW trumps everything. And Steve Benen is constantly waiting articles where he wonders why the media is not picking up on obvious lies, contradictions and distortions. They can’t seem to connect the dots because they are too busy trying to create their desired narrative or carry water for the GOP.
Bottom line, President Obama has been running against the mainstream media. An inept bunch of lazy stenographers afraid to call a lie a lie. There is not much resembling journalist integrity these days. The mainstream media has failed the American public. It makes me sick to my stomach to see such “SLOUTH”. It’s inexcusable. The need to get back to the basics of journalism could not be more urgent. Facts matter.
PRINCIPLES OF JOURNALISM
——————————————-
1. Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth
Democracy depends on citizens having reliable, accurate facts put in a meaningful context. Journalism does not pursue truth in an absolute or philosophical sense, but it can–and must–pursue it in a practical sense. This “journalistic truth” is a process that begins with the professional discipline of assembling and verifying facts. Then journalists try to convey a fair and reliable account of their meaning, valid for now, subject to further investigation. Journalists should be as transparent as possible about sources and methods so audiences can make their own assessment of the information. Even in a world of expanding voices, accuracy is the foundation upon which everything else is built–context, interpretation, comment, criticism, analysis and debate. The truth, over time, emerges from this forum. As citizens encounter an ever greater flow of data, they have more need–not less–for identifiable sources dedicated to verifying that information and putting it in context.
2. Its first loyalty is to citizens
While news organizations answer to many constituencies, including advertisers and shareholders, the journalists in those organizations must maintain allegiance to citizens and the larger public interest above any other if they are to provide the news without fear or favor. This commitment to citizens first is the basis of a news organization’s credibility, the implied covenant that tells the audience the coverage is not slanted for friends or advertisers. Commitment to citizens also means journalism should present a representative picture of all constituent groups in society. Ignoring certain citizens has the effect of disenfranchising them. The theory underlying the modern news industry has been the belief that credibility builds a broad and loyal audience, and that economic success follows in turn. In that regard, the business people in a news organization also must nurture–not exploit–their allegiance to the audience ahead of other considerations.
Unfortunately The SCOTUS led then by Scalia said that the news DID not have the obligation to tell the truth. When Faux Noise was sued for firing reporters that refused to lie in a report the SCOTUS said that the reporters obligation was to their employer and if their employer told them to lie they had to lie.
Dan Rather, Joan Walsh, Rachel? The “press” is calling out the “press?” What hypocrites!! This is what we will be hearing for the next week, while they try to defend themselves.
I seem to remember Mitt Romney also signed documents saying he paid taxes in MA when he paid them in UT to run for MA governor. I thought that was fraudulent or criminal too. I know when he got caught he paid the taxes but lying is lying.
He’s absolute scum — I knew it from the first time I saw him. I didn’t need this to loathe him, but this is the kind of stuff that peels away low-info and fundie voters, and for that I rejoice. WOOT!
Willard loves money and hates women so much that it’s not surprising that the combo of the two would be his downfall. Couldn’t happen to a more complete asshole.
I know this is cynical, but everyone on the planet knows that Romney is an absolute liar. So I doubt this will hurt him. Truly hope I’m wrong but honestly, the press has pretended he’s a viable candidate for far, far too long.
Has anyone posted this, because it is really worth the read? It’s all here, every reason to re-elect President Obama, in his own words. I have no idea why this was initially supposed to be off the record, but after the Des Moines Register stomped their feet, the Obama campaign allowed them to release the transcript. It’s excellent.
Thanks, dotster3. Just read the entire thing and I highly recommend it. PBO has never been clearer in what he has accomplished and what he hopes to accomplish in the next 4 years. Very clearly spelled out.
I’m about to waste 10 seconds of my life posting this:
Big Trump announcement: If Obama will release all of his school records and passport applications, Trump will contribute $5 million to the charity of Obama’s choice.
That’s it.
Wish I could donate to PBO at the office. It will have to wait until tonight.
So, Ryan is giving s speech on how to care for the Poor? Laughable! They are just fucking with the American Press and the American People. Very cynical.
But, where us Tavis and Cornell? Where is Van Jones? To talk about this speech by Ryan?
Crickets!
We are living in a world filled with Bull Shit artists and we have no MSM to separate the BS from the truth. The like of Cornell/Tavis …well their egos are more important to them then the poor. A house built of cards may fall …but a country built with bull shit !
One of the MSNBC commentators had something on his show since Romney has been the one running for the GOP about how his tactics are in line with the mafia protection bosses of olden days. It might have been LOD. It was amazing how he nailed it.

Brilliant, the carnival barkers big ransom announcement backfires because all it has done is provide a premise for more focus on the fact that Mitt Romney lacks transparency about his tax returns. I have seen very creative and hilarious ransom notes piling up on twitter for his guy’s tax returns. Now the carnival barker extraordinaire joins Todd Akin and Richard Murdock causing serious headaches for Willard.
OK, this explains the Des Moines Register rant and problems the Obama campaign may have had regarding their reporting. I have also noticed the continual Republican partisan reporting at that paper for the entirety of the presidential campaign—–lots of praise for any Romney appearance, always cynical comments about anything Obama related.
The Des Moines Register complained that President Obama wanted his interview with them to be off the record. Funny thing though, if the Register didn’t complain I would not have known that President Obama even did an interview with them. Seems to me that Team Chicago out foxed the Register into almost forcing people to read the transcript of the interview in which President Obama outlines all of his accomplishments.
1st we had "Legitimate Rape" & now we have "Gift from God Rape". Any woman who votes Republican this yr needs 2 have her head examined.— Donna NoShock (@NoShock) October 24, 2012
Now some wealthy friend of the President need to make a announcement that they would donate 10 million dollars to a charity of Mitt Romney choice, if Mitt would release his tax returns.
Why does this matter? “We can see in the Romneys’ returns a myriad of ways that high-income taxpayers can reduce their tax rates that just aren’t available to ordinary taxpayers,” says Wilkins. “The returns confirm what most Americans believe about the federal income tax system — that it’s rigged in favor of the rich. And we know from Romney’s tax proposals that he has no plans to change that.”
Under Romney and Ryan’s tax plans, people making over $1 million would get an average tax cut of between $250,000 to $400,000 a year, according to Citizens for Tax Justice. Romney can only pay for that massive tax cut for the wealthy by exploding the deficit, like George W. Bush did, or by drastically cutting the social safety net, as Ryan has proposed to do. Either policy would be unpopular, which is why Romney has released so few details about how he’d pay for his tax cuts. Romney’s tax history gives us a clue as to how he would govern – and that’s why the candidate wants to leave us in the dark.
UPDATED AT 9:45 AM: The SOS now has the following state numbers after a morning tally (not all numbers in for Day 4): 210,484 have voted by mail or early voting. 48 percent are Democrats and 35.5 percent are Republicans. The raw vote lead is about 21,000 votes. So if 90 percent of partisans vote for each guy and let’s say Romney wins indies by 10 points (which would be big), he would stillbe behind by 13,000 votes.
After four days of early/mail voting, the Democrats have a massive lead in Clark County and the Republicans are not doing as well as they need to in Washoe County.
The Democrats added about 5,000 voters to their lead in Clark while the GOP won Washoe by about 200 voters out of more than 9,000 cast. The Democrats now have a 25,000-voter lead in Clark and about 1,200 in Washoe.
It’s still relatively early, but the trend keeps looking familiar to those of us who have watched this cycle after cycle. The only difference this cycle is how huge the turnout is — 30 percent higher in Clark than four years ago. The Republicans are doing better than the 2008 disaster, but not well enough yet to indicate they can stop the Democrats from banking enough votes to hold off any advantage for the GOP on Election Day. The real question is whether this high turnout presages that Election Day will mean even less than it usually does, or whether we are headed for a record turnout this election. Or both.
It was 80 percent in 2008. But with almost a fifth of voters already having cast ballots only four days in — and the second week of early voting is usually larger — it may well be higher than that. I don’t want to extrapolate too much with this much data, but it seems clear the Republicans need either a larger turnout differential and a substantial win for Mitt Romney among unaffiliated and third-party voters.
The numbers in Clark, with early and absentees tallied:
Democrats — 73,531, or 50 percent
Republicans — 48,169, or 33 percent
Others — 24,637, or 17 percent
So Democrats are 4 points above their Clark registration and Republicans are about 2 points above. One quick scenario: Suppose each candidate is holding 90 percent of the base and Romney is winning others by 10 points. That would mean President Obama already has a 19,000 vote lead in Clark — after four days! (Have I mentioned no poll shows Romney winning idies by that much — indeed, some show it even or Obama ahead.)
BRIAN WILLIAMS INTERVIEWS PRESIDENT OBAMA ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL
Williams will follow the President as he sets out on a seven-state campaign swing … An excerpt will air as Williams reports from the trail for “NBC Nightly News” on Wednesday, October 24, followed by clips on “TODAY” and “NBC Nightly News” and extended coverage on “Rock Center with Brian Williams” on Thursday, October 25.
Ha! Just heard Romney say President Obama’s campaign is “taking on water,” but his campaign is “full speed ahead,” right before tears squirted out of his dead-lookin’ eyes. Romney would jump off his yacht at this point, I’m sure, but I hear the Coast Guard doesn’t answer SOS calls for “Robot Overboard.” Nor would I. Just sayin’.
Probably posted somewhere but …Again, electoral college. Always. As per Charlie Cook
” But if the national polls are looking even, that doesn’t mean that the election is an even-money contest. Although this race is very close, the road to 270 electoral votes is considerably more difficult for Romney than it is for Obama. The president starts off with undisputed leads in 16 states and the District of Columbia with 237 electoral votes, 33 short of the 270 needed to win. Romney begins with equally clear leads in 23 states with 191 electoral votes, 79 short of a victory. Nine states with 110 electoral votes are in the admittedly broad Toss-Up column (Colorado, Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin). Obama needs to win 30 percent of those Toss-Up electoral votes; Romney needs 72 percent of those votes.”
Okay folks, Gallup is busy slowly adjusting their numbers.
Current PBO favorability 53/42 gain of 5 points from yesterday
Regitered voters O48/R47 gain of 2 from yesterday
LV R50/O47 gain of 2 for obama from yesterday.
Here’s the thing, no incumbent with 53% favorability is going to lose. Just isn’t going to happen.
I want to say a big THANK YOU to all the people doing hard work in OFA offices, canvassing, calling…..My contribution this year has been giving. That is what I could do, and have been doing this regularly, and just made another donation to the President.
I am 72 and believe this election is the most important of my lifetime…….If 2000 had gone another way, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in now with the President working so hard against high odds.
I so admire the work his Chicago team does, and know that “God is in the details” and that committee is good at details. Here’s what I hope happens after the big win. The OFA morphs into an organization which will help build Democratic organizations in now red states. I know they will be working in what are now purple states. The only way the good can be sustained, and not overturned in the future, is to root out the tea party and put in good progressives. I fully believe the Obama organization to take this on. He is always looking to the future.
I’ve also made choices for giving determined by where I was born and where I’ve lived: Sherrod Brown, Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, Debbie Stabenow, and our two democratic candidates here in Oklahoma. I will be proud to say I had a small bit in their wins.

Put a fork in Mitt, he’s toast.
Just breaking, Mitt lied under oath. What a surprise, he’s been lying all along, but to do it under oath? This is a great October surprise.

Linky needs to be fixed.
It’s also behind a pay wall – not known definitely as yet – court to decide Thursday whether details can be released
http://gawker.com/5954461/gloria-allreds-october-surprise-mitt-romney-lied-under-oath-to-help-staples-founder-keep-money-from-wife-in-divorce
Thanks again 99ts. Not sure this is really a october surprise. And the thugs will eat it up that the bot screwed over the wife.
I seem to remember Mitt Romney also signed documents saying he paid taxes in MA when he paid them in UT to run for MA governor. I thought that was fraudulent or criminal too. I know when he got caught he paid the taxes but lying is lying.
Yes, he lied to the MA Ballot Commission.

Perfect way to bring even more attention to it
Thanks, dotster3. Just read the entire thing and I highly recommend it. PBO has never been clearer in what he has accomplished and what he hopes to accomplish in the next 4 years. Very clearly spelled out.
No reason why they shouldn’t endorse him. I’d be shocked if they don’t.
An on-the-ground report from Chicago: http://www.barackobama.com/news/entry/inside-the-early-vote-numbers
Now, that would be a october surprise.

#TrustBarack – He’s Earned It
Trump is demented – hahahahahaha – birtherism plus
What ..did Trump release his SURPRISE?
I’m about to waste 10 seconds of my life posting this:
Big Trump announcement: If Obama will release all of his school records and passport applications, Trump will contribute $5 million to the charity of Obama’s choice.
That’s it.
Wish I could donate to PBO at the office. It will have to wait until tonight.
That’s the BIG announcement from Trump? And Palin was part of this?
And of course, once the laughing stops, it only reminds us that Mitt has not released his tax returns.
Let’s pledge to donate if Romney releases his entire tax records. This guy makes me vomit.
Oh, no. let’s pledge to donate to the causes and people that Romney would destroy: veterans, the troops, the unemployed, the sick, the elderly.
The interview to the DES Moines register has been allowed to go public, from the Obama camp.
Is he promoting for an upcoming Apprentice show again?
Thank you President Obama and AG Holder ….
Good news!
Can we please not give anymore of this beautiful blog space to that Racist Pig Trump!!
Appreciate your request, Donna, but this one is just too delicious not to share with the team
I’ll make a 62262 donation to PBO just as soon as I click to post this comment …. as penance …
#FORWARD
Perfect response from Plouffe.
How does Alex tweet if she is doing her Show?
I think that badger on his head has finally eaten away his brain.
AGREED. Now he’s trending on twitter. GAH. I swear, people take the bait every time.
+1. We can do very well without garbage from carnival barkers.
They violated the agreement to keep it on background. But, YES, you’re absolutely correct!!
As noted above, perfect way to get lots of attention on the actual words spoken by the President – Team Chicago is always out in front
Jeremy Bird: Inside the Early Vote Numbers

And just recently PPP pulled a Gallup and changed their methodology.
BUT BUT BUT BUT there’s that Romentum! LOL. Time to change it to OMENTUM!!!!!
Now some wealthy friend of the President need to make a announcement that they would donate 10 million dollars to a charity of Mitt Romney choice, if Mitt would release his tax returns.
Many Unanswered Questions About Romney’s Taxes
Ari Berman on October 24, 2012 – 11:21 AM ET
——————————————

Just sayin’.
>>>>>>right before tears squirted out of his dead-lookin’ eyes<<<<<
You have a way with words, JOB!
Willard always looks on the verge of a breakdown with me — watery eyes, spiked sideburns, gray under-eye circles, sweating, melting…..
Thanks, PJ
… conniving, lying, yelling at the five dead-eyed lookin’ Romney “kids,” calling for Mommy (aka Ann) …
Who knew Romney was a squirter?

So the big announcement wasn’t about the Obama divorce papers?
New post everyone:
http://theobamadiary.com/2012/10/24/a-video-or-six/
Okay folks, Gallup is busy slowly adjusting their numbers.
Current PBO favorability 53/42 gain of 5 points from yesterday
Regitered voters O48/R47 gain of 2 from yesterday
LV R50/O47 gain of 2 for obama from yesterday.
Here’s the thing, no incumbent with 53% favorability is going to lose. Just isn’t going to happen.
Thanks for this news. Very encouraging.
And in the news that really matters:
Whoa!
