Rise and Shine

Cleveland, October 25 (Thomas Miller)

****

Joseph E. Stiglitz (NYT): This election has rightly been characterized as one that will deeply affect the future direction of the country: Americans are being given a choice with potentially large consequences. One arena in which there are profound differences that has not been adequately debated is the future course of inequality.

…. Every other advanced country has recognized the right of everyone to access to health care, and extending access was central to President Obama’s health care reform. Romney and Ryan have criticized that reform, but have said nothing about how or whether they would ensure universal access. Most important, the macroeconomic consequences of the Romney-Ryan economic program would be devastating: growth would slow, unemployment would increase, and just as Americans would need the social protection of government more, the safety net would be weakened.

…. let no one be deceived: their tax policies will lead to even more inequality at the top, the continued hollowing out of the middle, and more poverty at the bottom. Worst of all, they will lead to a more divided society that endangers our future – our economy, our democracy and our sense of identity as a nation.

(Joseph E. Stiglitz, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and a former chief economist of the World Bank, is University Professor at Columbia University)

Paul Krugman: Mitt Romney has been barnstorming the country, telling voters that he has a five-point plan to restore prosperity …. Mr. Romney’s “plan” is a sham. It’s a list of things he claims will happen, with no description of the policies he would follow to make those things happen…..

Actually, if describing what you want to see happen without providing any specific policies to get us there constitutes a “plan,” I can easily come up with a one-point plan that trumps Mr. Romney any day. Here it is: Every American will have a good job with good wages. Also, a blissfully happy marriage. And a pony.

So Mr. Romney is faking it. His real plan seems to be to foster economic recovery through magic, inspiring business confidence through his personal awesomeness. But what about the man he wants to kick out of the White House?

…. Mr. Obama may not have an exciting economic plan, but, if he is re-elected, he will get to implement a health reform that is the biggest improvement in America’s safety net since Medicare. Mr. Romney doesn’t have an economic plan at all, but he is determined not just to repeal Obamacare but to impose savage cuts in Medicaid. So never mind all those bullet points. Think instead about the 45 million Americans who either will or won’t receive essential health care, depending on who wins on Nov. 6.

President Obama has a laugh when an election official’s cell phone rings …

Eugene Robinson (Washington Post): This election is only tangentially a fight over policy. It is also a fight about meaning and identity – and that’s one reason voters are so polarized. It’s about who we are and who we aspire to be.

President Obama enters the final days of the campaign with a substantial lead among women – about 11 points, according to the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll – and enormous leads among Latinos and African Americans, the nation’s two largest minority groups. Mitt Romney leads among white voters, with an incredible 2-to-1 advantage among white men … it would be disingenuous to pretend not to notice the obvious cleavage between those who have long held power in this society and those who are beginning to attain it.

When Republicans vow to “take back our country,” they never say from whom. But we can guess.

…. Some of Obama’s opponents have tried to delegitimize his presidency because he doesn’t embody the America they once knew. He embodies the America of now.

Paul Krugman:  …. If you’re new to this, there are two basic approaches to election analysis at this point. One is the campaign reporter style, full of impressionist reporting about who won the news cycle and who has “momentum”, whatever that means ….. The other is poll-based. And that mostly means state-level polls at this point: there are more of them, and we have an electoral-college system, not a popular-vote system.

The impressionistic style has been all about Romney on the rise, a narrative that is to a large part being fed by the Romney campaign itself. But the state-level polling doesn’t show it…..

Chicago, October 25 (Scout Tufankjian)

NYT Editorial: …. For Mr. Romney, Mr. Obama’s decision to bail out the auto industry and his own rejection of it is proving to be an Electoral College challenge. Several states are also feeling the benefits of an improved economy. Obama campaign officials say that to win, Mr. Romney would have to pick off voters already committed to the president in states where Mr. Romney has never been ahead. “We think we maintain a lot more plausible pathways to 270 than Governor Romney, who we think has to essentially pull an inside straight,” said David Plouffe, the president’s chief strategist.

Those pathways exist because millions of voters still harbor doubts about Mitt Romney. He has apparently decided that in the final days of the campaign, he will do little to dispel them.

Washington Post: …. this is an interesting case in which Mitt Romney has taken two moments from the third presidential debate – both of which were faulted by fact checkers – and turned them into television ads. In both cases, Romney also misspoke, making his statements even less accurate. The campaign commercial for the “apology tour” selectively snips out Romney’s errors, but apparently it was impossible to clean up Romney’s error on the size of the Navy.

…. The net effect is to suggest Obama made those supposed apologies to Arabs, without actually saying so, because that would be incorrect. But even careful editing still does not fix the basic problem in the first place – there was no apology tour.

This ad also repeats the criticism that Obama has never visited Israel. As we have noted, only four of the last 11 presidents visited Israel during their presidency — and only two visited in their first term…

For doubling down on claims that have been repeatedly called out by fact checkers, even to the point of editing out the candidate’s misstatements, the Romney campaign earns Four Pinocchios.

Adam Serwer (Mother Jones): GOP’s Benghazi Smoking Gun Goes Up in Smoke …. When a set of State Department emails were released Wednesday, one reporting that a local Islamist militia had claimed responsibility for the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the US ambassador to Libya, conservatives thought they had the smoking gun that the Obama administration had lied about what had occurred.

…. There’s only one problem — well, actually, there are many, but one big one: The email appears to have been incorrect…..

….. in the future it’s a good idea to remember that just because someone posts something on Facebook, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. Even better: Just because someone said someone posted something on Facebook doesn’t mean it’s true. Even if you really, really want it to be.

Poor Chips, must be tired from all that baking!

It’s Friday, TODobots, and we’re approaching the wire with lots of energy and gas in the tank!
Way to go! An extra HUGE ‘THANK YOU’ to all the Obots who are out in the field in some way or other these last days – phoning, door-to-door, data entry, encouraging, providing treats, driving voters, …….. “THANK YOU! YES. WE. CAN! YES. WE. WILL!

‘HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DesertFlower!’ May you continue to bloom beautifully and happily (in a state where PBO knocks out the wingnuts)! /So, Df, is it your 29th or 39th? ;) ;)/

Hats off to you, CK!

Good morning Chips. Happy Birthday Desertflower and Hopeful Fruit. Please ad my Republican Husband Obama Supporter to the mix. I posted this on the last thread but wanted to share my CNN comment. I usually don’t get my comments posted because they are not mean but factual. It is in reference to the ad about 1st vote = loss of virginity. Here is my post:

    proudmemberofglobalzero

Sorry, as a mother of one daughter and two sons…I thought it was cute. My sons cast their first vote in 2008 and my daughter cast hers in the 2010 primaries…they all are likely voters under the age of 25. This ad beats the ads I am seeing in Florida from all of the GOP candidates. Two of my children voted absentee already. They are in college and voted for PBO. My other son is working and going to get his masters but is registered in NY. He will be voting early like his mom. Early vote starts tomorrow in Florida. I will be out the door by 6am with a car full of Obama voters. We hope to be among the first to cast votes for President Obama in Palm Beach County Florida. My husband is a Republican and will vote on election day. He too is pledging his support for President Obama this election.

Jon Stewart on the GOP, ‘If a woman wants to have a baby via IVF she can’t. Rape? She has to.’

    By: Sarah Jones

    —————————————–

Jon Stewart summed up the GOP’s positions on rape, abortion, and conception, ‘If a woman wants to have a baby via IVF she can not. Rape? She has to.’
    .
    .
The Daily Show host summed the issue up in an understandable way that every American should hear. The Republican Party has gone so far to the extreme that their position is to force women to have their rapists’ babies, while they forbid women from conceiving in a modern, non-Bible approved way. The Republican rejection of IVF is also related to the fact that the GOP is under the control of the conservative anti-science fringe.

Stewart was right on. The Republican Party doesn’t get it. The problem with the Akins and Mourdocks of their party isn’t that they turn off swing voters and lose elections. The problem is that they believe in things like “legitimate rape,” and rape being, “God’s intention.” These men are advocating a policy that glorifies the fruits of a heinous and violent crime against women.

    Hi everyone- just sharing….
I was able to watch all of the stops and interviews from the 2 day Extravaganza yesterday ( thanks to DVR and Cspan) and today I can’t stop thinking about the President. I have been a supporter, knocking on doors and making phone calls, but today I feel different. Today, I realized that I REALLY LIKE PRESIDENT OBAMA. I had forgot how in 2008 I felt this way. Sounds crazy, but I want to walk out this meeting, leave work and go do something- ANYTHING- for the campaign. I am canvassing tomorrow and getting on the call this afternoon with campaign so this will have to do (gotta keep my job:).
I’m just REALLY excited again! I LOVE PRESIDENT OBAMA and HE MUST WIN!
Makes me wonder if his TV blitz is having the same effect on others. Thanks for listening :)

For anyone who tells you that Hispanics won’t turn out or that there is no enthusiasm among them (Chuck Todd I’m looking at you), please refer them to this link. And here are key pieces of info:

// 1. Latinos make up the fastest-growing share of the electorate, and comprise a bigger share of early voters today than at this point in 2008.

    2. President Obama has greater support among Latinos than he did in 2008, and Mitt Romney has much less support than John McCain drew four years ago. As a result, today the President is leading by as much as 51 points among Latino voters.

    3. In Florida, early voting among Latino Democrats and Independents is way up, while early voting among Latino Republicans is down compared with this point four years ago.

    4. Since the last presidential election, the total number of registered Latinos in Florida has increased by more than 195,000, and 91% registered as Democrats and Independents. Just 9% of these new registrants registered as Republicans. //

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S CLOSING ARGUMENT: “TRUST MATTERS”

It’s always been a matter of trust

    By Steve Benen

    —————————–

I suggested yesterday that President Obama’s closing theme appeared to be “trust.” Increasingly, the pitch is coming without subtlety.

As part of his multi-state blitz yesterday, Obama began telling supporters, “We joke about ‘Romnesia,’ but the reason I bring this up is because it speaks to something serious and that is the issue of trust…. There’s no more serious issue in the presidential campaign than who can you trust. Trust matters…. And here’s the thing — you know me by now. You know I say what I mean, and I mean what I say.”

And what about his rival? Obama shared some candid thoughts with Rolling Stone.

About the storm – no need for us to add to the “chicken littles” and create undue concern about it’s impact on the election.

The storm is this weekend and will move out by Wed next week. The election is the Tuesday after that. The states expected to be hit this weekend (New York and New Jersey and DC and Maryland) are 1) not swing states and 2) don’t have early voting. http://www.weather.com/news/weather-hurricanes/hurricane-sandy-winter-storm-20121025

One correction – New York does have early voting “in person absentee voting”. I voted yesterday because I’m poll watching for OFA in PA or VA on election day. Can’t wait! But storm or not, NY, NJ, MD and DC are fired up for the president. And a significant proportion of the democratic base in these states is concentrated in urban areas and we’re used to getting to where we need to get to on the bus, subway or trains so as far as its not dangerous storms I wouldn’t expect rain to have a major impact on voters.

      Correction: MD does have early voting — Saturday, October 27, 2012 through Thursday, November 1, 2012. Hours: 10am to 8pm on October 27 and October 29 thru November 1, 2012. Sunday, October 28 = 12pm to 6pm.

I’m there tomorrow. Pass the word!

Hi, all – Haven’t commented in a long, long time so not sure if these comments will go through. Just wanted to thank Chipsticks for this fabulous site and everyone for the warm and lovely community. I come here to be refreshed and re-energized and to learn what I can’t learn elsewhere. Thank you, Ms. Chipsticks for imposing the no-negativity rule for this last, final push. Going to another GOTV bank on Sunday and I think I’ve picked up a recruit to come with – a friend was inspired by my raves about the team here in Santa Monica and how unutterably awesome it is to be in a room full of supporters working so hard to get out the vote and re-elect the president.

Why Romney’s bogus Jeep claims matter
    By Steve Benen

Mitt Romney campaigned in Defiance, Ohio, last night, and rolled out a new argument. “I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China,” he said. “I will fight for every good job in America, I’m going to fight to make sure trade is fair, and if it’s fair, America will win.”

There are a few problems with this line of attack, starting with the simple fact that Romney wasn’t telling the truth.

Yeah, I picked up on that non-apology non-apology, too, that McCain was so anxious to grab onto. McCain also announced that Colin Powell brought more “shame” on himself by supporting PBO again, and that he and Powell “used to be friends.” Gee, loser McCain, maybe Colin Powell picked up on your use of the term “that one” for candidate Obama, and re-sized ya in his mind (you came out looking smaller than you already looked). And maybe you should stay out of discussions about women, because you have pretty much shamed yourself as someone with no regard for women or African-Americans, just to name a couple “interest groups.” It’s you, Joe L and Lindsay G ridin’ off into the sunset, okay? Or, rather, being driven off, in some vehicle paid for by Cindy, the rich wife who probably thinks you’re a loser, too, ’cause I’m pretty sure she and your daughter are voting for Obama, again. By the way, President Obama will be re-elected, and you’re still a loser. You loser.

Boy, that felt good getting that out! Like I care one iota about John McCain. #FORWARD

Mornin’, TOD. Chips – Lovely, lovely images and words! Thank you. Did y’all already talk about the reported fact (who knows) that the President called the loser a “bulls****er”? And it’s in print? First thing I thought of was some rwnj “red staters” buried deep in the country might just appreciate his … uh … candor. Of course, they’ll never read that particular magazine, but it’ll be quoted all over the place.

One of the earliest political anecdotes I can remember hearing as a small child involved another Democratic president, the then recently-retired Harry Truman, who was said to have offended some ladies at his wife’s tea party with a reference to “manuring the lawn”.

“My dear,” said one of them to Bess, after Harry left, “Couldn’t you get him to say… fertilizer?”

To which Bess replied, “It’s taken me forty years to train him to use ‘manure’.”

Why the GM Rescue Should Matter in Ohio—and Everywhere Else

    By Jonathan Cohn

    ———————–

Nobody familiar with the electoral map should be surprised that the auto industry keeps coming up in the presidential campaign, as it did on Monday night during a debate that was supposed to focus on foreign policy. The entire election could come down to Ohio. And in Ohio, about one out of every eight jobs has ties to the carmakers. Take it from somebody who lives over the border in Michigan, the only state that has even more auto-related jobs than Ohio. In these parts, people care a lot about what Obama did—and what Romney might have done—when Chrysler and General Motors were in trouble.

But those of us in auto country shouldn’t be the only ones thinking about this episode. Perhaps more than any presidential campaign in recent memory, this election offers a set of stark choices. Obama and Romney have very different philosophies of government. And they have very different leadership styles. The auto industry story puts these contrasts into almost perfect relief.

“THE HARRY REID EFFECT” & WHAT IT MEANS FOR 2012

    America’s Voice | Released on 10/25/2012

    —————————————

So what happened? According to Senator Reid himself, “I would not be the majority leader in the United States Senate today, but for the Hispanics in Nevada.” Yet, even acknowledging the important contribution of the Latino voters who flocked to Senator Reid, how did the pollsters and pundits get this race so wrong ahead of time and miss the fact that Reid was poised for a resounding victory?

The answer? “The Harry Reid Effect.” The Harry Reid Effect is when pre-election polls underestimate the Latino vote in a way that misses the advantage enjoyed by the candidate most favored by Latino voters. The methodological and sampling issues that lead to a skewed and undercounted Latino voter sample in many pre-election polls are compounded by increasingly effective Latino voter registration and turnout operations (also are underestimated in pre-election polling turnout models).

Working full time and running home to grab dinner and then out the door to OFA until 9:30-10:00 every night was getting to this ole girl. Then I sat there after I got in last night and watched our energizer bunny President zig-zag all over the country getting people inspired to vote and my little pity party came to an abrupt end. ;)

    Any questions??? http://www.salon.com/2012/10/26/chevron_gives_2_5_million_to_house_gop/

Energy giant Chevron contributed $2.5 million in October to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC supporting Republicans to the House. According to campaignmoney.org, the contribution is the largest from a single corporation to a super PAC since the Citizen’s United verdict enabled corporations and unions to make unlimited political contributions.

Think Progress reports that the “donation comes after House Republicans voted 109 times this Congress to enrich oil companies.”

The company’s donation arrives in an election year where the oil industry has waged multimillion-dollar ad campaigns, including American Petroleum Institute’s campaign in swing states. Chevron has also sent 91 percent of its federal political contributions to Republican candidates. So far this year, fossil fuel groups have spent more than $153 million on campaign ads to promote pro-fossil fuel candidates.

Chevron gets a good return for its loyalty. House Republicans voted at least twice to protect Big Oil’s $2.4 billion in taxpayer subsidies. Chevron alone receives an estimated $700 million in annual tax breaks. And the company spent $16.6 million of Big Oil’s $105 million lobbying Congress to block pollution controls and safeguards for public health.

Our President is an excellent decision maker, and a genuine leader who ‘sees’ ALL his ‘people’, even those who watch the ‘wrong’ programmes. I imagine PBO thinks it would be ‘discrimination’ to not reach out to ALL Americans. Put another way, we ought to be even more proud of this evidence of the President practising what he preaches – giving every American a fair shot at the American dream. That’s all.

When it comes to politics, PBO is a strategist who doesn’t get bogged down by personal likes or dislikes. It’s ultimately what will get him the votes and keep him in the Oval office for another 4 years.

Dems cry foul about Morning Joke all the time but I have often felt that its those very Dems that make this show successful. This guy sets the tone for MSNBC for the better part of the day and most often that tone is negative.

Good morning peeps! Don’t know if this has posted anywhere but the final paragraph is an excellent summary of the differences between PBO and Romney:

Put it all together, and it’s possible to draw from the auto industry rescue a pretty good lesson about the real differences between Obama and Romney. Obama understands that the market doesn’t always work on its own—that sometimes government must intervene in order to protect Americans from economic harm. Romney doesn’t. Obama is also willing to act in the face of political peril. Romney isn’t.

Those differences should matter to all Americans, not just those of us who live in Michigan and Ohio.
