11:30 ET: VP Biden speaks at a campaign event in Sarasota, Florida (listed at CNN live streaming)

12:0: President Obama departs the White House

12:25 Arrives in Atlantic City and views storm damage with Governor Chris Christie

3:0: VP Biden speaks at at campaign event in Ocala, Florida (C-Span)

3:15: PBO departs Atlantic City

4:25: Arrives at the White House

(Need to check these times, they’re different in every schedule I see)

President Obama will return to the campaign trail on Thursday after taking three days off to oversee storm response. He will attend rallies in Green Bay, Wis.; Boulder, Colo.; and Las Vegas.

****

Jonathan Chait (NY Mag): …. Obama can boast a record of accomplishment that bests any president since Roosevelt, and has fewer demerits on his record than any of them, including Roosevelt. The only president that comes close in gross positive accomplishment is Lyndon Johnson, whose successes were overwhelmed by his failures ….

….What can be said without equivocation is that Obama has proven himself morally, intellectually, temperamentally, and strategically. In my lifetime, or my parents’, he is easily the best president. On his own terms, and not merely as a contrast to an unacceptable alternative, he overwhelmingly deserves reelection.

NYT: Chris Christie was supposed to be one of Mitt Romney‘s most aggressive surrogates, constantly attacking President Obama in the waning days of the presidential campaign.

Instead, Mr. Christie on Tuesday repeatedly heaped praise on Mr. Obama for his leadership of the federal government’s response to the storm that slammed into his state on Monday …. he was effusive about Mr. Obama’s administration, calling the storm response “wonderful,” “excellent” and “outstanding.”

….  some Republicans have already begun grumbling about Mr. Christie’s over-the-top praise of the president at such a crucial time in the election…

…. In several appearances on morning news programs on Tuesday, Mr. Christie went out of his way to thank the president personally….

David Firestone (NYT): On a day when millions of Americans face serious hardship as they recover from Hurricane Sandy’s damage, Mitt Romney clearly decided it would be crass to campaign in a conventional way. So he turned a scheduled rally in Kettering, Ohio, this morning into a “storm relief event,” and posed before piles of donated canned goods.

…. He described such donations as “the American way” …. but the real “American way” is quite different. Most disaster agencies don’t want donated goods; they need cash. And in the modern era, the most important cash comes from taking people’s tax dollars and distributing them in the form of federal aid to communities hard-hit by a disaster. Because that involves the federal government, it is tainted in the minds of Mr. Romney and his party. It is compulsory, and thus not an offering of the heart.

….. Mr. Romney ignored all questions about his plans for federal emergency management. It’s probably embarrassing to admit those plans consist largely of collecting soup cans.

Dana Milbank: Mitt Romney spoke to supporters in the Ohio town of Defiance last week, but his words came from the twin cities of Duplicity and Deception.

“I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China” …. The truth, however, was roughly 180 degrees opposite Romney’s claim…

….. A couple of days later, his campaign came out with an ad in Ohio repeating the allegation in a way that tweaked the wording to make it technically true, while continuing to give the same false impression…

….When it comes to the truth, Romney still lives in Defiance.

Greg Sargent: I noted below that the Romney campaign has broadened its Jeep-to-China ad campaign by putting a version of its earlier TV ad on the radio in Toledo, Ohio, home to a Jeep plant.

I’ve got audio of the ad from a Democrat and it is even more staggering in its dishonesty than the TV spot is… (see post for script)….

… It is startling that the Romney campaign thinks Ohioans will believe this stuff. It flies so directly in the face of reality that it suggests a real Hail Mary on Romney’s part. The willingness to play on people’s fears for their livelihoods in such a dishonest fashion displays contempt for the very people the ad is meant to persuade.

****

Steve Benen: …. Romney lied about Chrysler moving Jeep production to China. After learning the truth, Romney turned the lie into a television ad. Reminded of the truth, he expanded the ad buy. Told once more that he was lying, Romney created an insanely dishonest radio ad on the same subject.

… Romney has run out of ways to explain his failure, so he’s lashing out with demonstrable falsehoods. The Republican knows the claims aren’t true, and he’s aware of the fact that knowledgeable people realize he’s lying, but Romney assumes regular folks are fools, and won’t know the difference. If he wins, the ends will justify the means.

Greg Sargent: Obama leads in key battlegrounds: The new New York Times/CBS/Quinnipiac polls show Obama up by five in Ohio, but also by two in Virginia (49-47), and one in Florida (48-47). Obama leads among early voters in Ohio (60-34) and in Florida 50-44). This reflects, again, an overlooked dynamic: The race is tighter in Virginia (where Obama has now edged ahead in the Real Clear Politics average) and Florida than it is in Ohio. And Romney probably needs all three to win.

I guess (Sandy) Christie’s effusive thanks are his way of endorsing the President, since it would be waaay too much for him to step out and use the word ‘endorse’ now after his RNC assignment and his ‘effusive’ endorsement of Willard at the convention. Of course, while it may play well in the MSM and I’m not turning up my nose at the President getting his just due, I’m going to say among family members here: ‘I personally put as much weight in Christie’s current change of heart re leadership as I did in his and all the GOP primary contenders’ endorsement of Willard.’

Then why does the press not use the power of the press to expose this lying SOS. It’s like the press is the third candidate here, driving the narrative but never calling out the lies/slime and craven behavior. Like I have said before….people are being fed Bull Shit sandwiches by Romney and the press gives the people a drink to wash it all down. I blame uninformed voters too, they are either lazy, stupid or willfully ignorant. So all those reporters/press types….help stop the diet of Bull Shit sandwiches! Awesome News!

As The Los Angeles Times is reporting, the Academy Award-nominated actor is donating $100,000 to the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) National Marriage Fund, which is focused on supporting initiatives in four states where same-sex marriage legislation will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot. Pitt’s donation will be split evenly among Maine, Maryland and Washington, where ballot measures seek to legalize gay marriage, as well as Minnesota, where LGBT advocates are fighting an amendment which would effectively ban same-sex couples from tying the knot in the state’s constitution.

“It’s unbelievable to me that people’s lives and relationships are literally being voted on in a matter of days,” Pitt is quoted as saying on the HRC website. “In Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington, voters will go to the polls to decide if gay and lesbian couples — our friends and neighbors — are worthy of the same protections as everyone else.”

At a September screening of his movie “Killing Them Softly,” Pitt pointed to marriage equality once again as he lent his support to President Barack Obama. “I am an Obama supporter and I’m backing his election campaign,” he told The Telegraph. “Gay marriage is inevitable. The next generation, they get it. It is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.”

MITT ROMNEY IS THE NATIONAL POLITICAL SCANDAL OF 2012.

The ignominious return of the welfare lie

    By Steve Benen

    ———————————-

And yet, Romney keeps repeating it.

We’re well past the point at which this is an argument about policy. The question is now whether Mitt Romney has the integrity to hold national office — or really whether he has any integrity at all.

With this ad, Romney is once again carefully extending his middle finger in reality’s face. He doesn’t care about getting caught — his campaign has already said, “[W]e’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers” — he just cares about what he can get away with as part of his quest for power.

This is the national political scandal of 2012, whether the political world wants to admit it or not.

After reading that on Sunday morning, I was depressed for a long time. My eventual childish response was to write “Bullshit” across the editorial, draw some improvements on Mitt’s photo with a Sharpie, and set the whole thing ablaze outside on the grill. Pretty stupid, but it made me feel a lot better watching that thing go up in flames. That and reading how the DSM Register is owned by Bain Capital. The backlash to them has been righteous and satisfying to observe.

TODville: Our O’friend “canadabarb4obama” asked me to report that she finally ran into TWO DEMOCRATS on her cruise ship, so “it’s going to be a good day”! The ship is loaded with TPers, as she earlier reported, so I’m glad she finally found some normal people to hang with.

TODobots, if you haven’t already read the Chait article cited by Chips in its entirety, I suggest you do so. I’m only part way through but it appeals hugely to my mind. I think it’s far more worthy of our time than watching/reading the GOP whack jobs or any democratic apologist. Sharing parts of it with your mail/facebook contacts might also be a way to pump them up. I’ve gone back to finish reading…. ;)

Obama’s résumé of accomplishments is broad and deep, running the gamut from economic to social to foreign policy. The general thrust of his reforms, especially in economic policy, has been a combination of politically radical and ideologically moderate. The combination has confused liberals into thinking of Obamaism as a series of sad half-measures, and conservatives to deem it socialism, but the truth is neither. Obama’s agenda has generally hewed to the consensus of mainstream economists and policy experts. What makes the agenda radical is that, historically, vast realms of policy had been shaped by special interests for their own benefit. Plans to rationalize those things, to write laws that make sense, molder on think-tank shelves for years, even generations. They are often boring. But then Obama, in a frenetic burst of activity, made many of them happen all at once.

    The Quinnipiac poll is interesting.
Obama ahead in early voting 50-44, yet democrats to republicans 43-41.
That means, of the 450k independents that have voted, the President is winning that group by 8 points.
We know, because of the tea party in Florida, that overall independents lean republican.
But, of these early voters, the independents that have showed up, must be young students voting for the President.
And that is important, with 2.9 million out of 8.9 million registered, already voted. And 4days left to vote early.
    That is all.

Don’t know is this is the same article, but most these 145 readers literally skewer the DES Moines Register. Boy that felt good! Will we hear about this push-back from the MSM?

In. Iraq War veteran can’t figure out what all the fuss was about concerning his hanging of Obama in effigy as part of his Halloween display—–(how great for the trick or treaters!) He said the reaction has been “blown out of proportion”. He said it had nothing to do with race, cough cough, that his wife is AA—-that must be an interesting relationship. He said he got a visit from the Secret Service who said he had a right to express his hatred in this way but has now taken it down because he’s just tired of dealing with all the reactions.

VC…saw your reply above and have to confess that I have been consumed by this whole political process in no ordinary way. I am sure
I have a lot of company in that regard. I thought after 2008 that I would not be this involved again. Well was I in for a surprise. My husband
just shakes his head and leaves me alone…smart guy. Hoping after next week there will be some semblance of normalcy…post celebration of course :)
