NYT Editorial: …. The truth is that Mr. Obama was right when he talked about “real progress” in the economy during a campaign swing in Ohio, where the state unemployment rate has declined from 8.6 percent a year ago to 7 percent recently. Republican obstructionism has made it much harder to achieve the improvement we have seen, but it has failed in its seeming intent to ensure stagnation.

That left Mr. Romney flailing around for a response. His proclamation that the economy was at a “virtual standstill” is believable only if you adopt Mr. Romney’s denial of stark reality. A candidate who could ignore Chrysler’s announcement of 1,100 new jobs in Toledo and claim that Chrysler was moving jobs to China can just as easily see a flat line in an upward trend.

…. Republicans have been determined to keep the economy as weak as possible to hurt Mr. Obama’s campaign. The Republicans’ last-minute tactic has been a cynical one — to make it clear that they will continue obstructing Mr. Obama if he wins. That is a hollow argument for Mr. Romney. And it does not change the fact that Mr. Romney has no good ideas and Mr. Obama has plenty.

Washington Post: Through all the flip-flops, there has been one consistency in the campaign of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney: a contempt for the electorate.

How else to explain his refusal to disclose essential information? Defying recent bipartisan tradition, he failed to release the names of his bundlers — the high rollers who collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations. He never provided sufficient tax returns to show voters how he became rich.

How, other than an assumption that voters are too dim to remember what Mr. Romney has said across the years and months, to account for his breathtaking ideological shifts? ….

…. Mr. Obama has a record; voters know his priorities … Mr. Romney, by contrast, seems to be betting that voters have no memories, poor arithmetic skills and a general inability to look behind the curtain. We hope the results Tuesday prove him wrong.

Steve Benen: In a way, I blame my friend Greg Sargent. In the first week in January, he noted, almost in passing, that Mitt Romney seemed to be making a lot of false claims, and someone “really should document them all”. That struck me as a good idea, so I decided to tackle this on my own.

After all, I thought at the time, how hard could this be? Once a week, I’d let readers know about Romney’s whoppers, which I assumed would total about a half-dozen a week, and maybe after the election, I’d do a top 20 list of my favorites. The project would be a nice little Friday-afternoon feature.

Little did I know at the time that Romney would become an ambitious prevaricator, whose rhetoric would come to define post-truth politics. Nearly 11 months after Greg Sargent’s harmless suggestion, I’ve published 40 installments in this series, which, before today, featured 884 falsehoods. (If you include today’s edition, the new total is 917 falsehoods for the year.)

I wish that were a typo. It’s not…..

It was in response to this ridiculous tweet from Sean Spicer, communications guy at RNC

      • 40 anniebella
        November 3, 2012 at 9:47 am

This speaks volume as to the what kind of people are over there at the RNC, the signs bit would concern Spicer to comment on, but lying about Jeeps moving jobs to China doesn’t. Even after it’s been proven to be a lie, where were Sean Spicer?

        • November 3, 2012 at 10:01 am

Sean Spicer is pretending that the GOP and Mitt’s campaign isn’t crumbling in front of his eyes. The other day he sent out two tweets about Joe Biden getting his states mixed up at a rally. Sent them out as if it was serious news.

            November 3, 2012 at 11:32 am

I get that but stealing signs is pretty low no matter who is doing it. I would be pretty angry if someone stole my Obama sign, and if Romney supporters were going around stealing Obama signs I might tweet about it too. No one should do stuff like this.

            • November 3, 2012 at 11:41 am

Sean Spicer’s intent was to make it seem like Dems are stealing signs because they know or are afraid they will lose election. He could care less about anyone stealing signs. He is also the communications guy at the RNC. He shouldn’t be reporting something so minor.

    • November 3, 2012 at 9:44 am

Thanks guys. Sean Spicer thinks he’s clever. He then tweeted to me about an employee that the DNC had to fire after a James Okeefe “sting”. So I reminded him of how the RNC had to cut ties with an entire GOP firm suspected of voter fraud. Sean Spicer has not responded since.

You’re right Vicki. The reputable polls that have been released in the last 24-48 hrs mostly show PBO winning with one or two showing a tie. NONE show Willard ahead.

      November 3, 2012 at 9:18 am

How true about the polls – the right has spent your 104 hours trying to trash Nate Silver ( and Gov Cristie). Nate responded by putting PBO up to 83.7% chance of winning

        Hey JOB!

We are almost there….huffing and puffing to the finish line :)

I’m always anxious that people will actually come out and do what they say they are gonna do so I have to keep busy these final days. If what I witnessed here in Maryland through the early vote period is duplicated throughout this country on election day then its a slam dunk. The calls to VA, OH and WI were really great last night. I’ve got the 12:00 – 3:00 shift at OFA today so I get to spend sometime catching up this morning.

I could weep at all of the O’people who step away from their “real lives” to help get this dear man re-elected, along with our wonderful Joey. But, actually, the next time I plan to cry is when PBO is taking a victory lap on Tuesday night, with Michelle and his girls.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that temporary fuel trucks will be deployed in key locations in New York City and Long Island in order to help provide gas to emergency vehicles and the general public. The trucks are provided by the U.S. Department of Defense at the direction of President Obama and are being deployed in coordination with the New York National Guard at the direction of the Governor. The 5,000 gallon trucks will be deployed throughout the morning and there are an additional 150,000 gallons of fuel available to restock the trucks throughout the day. There is a 10 gallon limit per vehicle. Cars can fill up directly off of the truck.

More from Sam Wang at Princeton Election Consortium:
The latest odds of an Obama win hit 99.8% according to the Princeton Election Consortium:

    Electoral Votes:
    Obama: 323
    Romney: 215

    Meta-margin:
    Obama +3.02%

    Probability of Obama re-election:
Random Drift 98.1%, Bayesian Prediction 99.8%

More below the squashed orange bug.

In the words of Professor Wang (see Princeton Election Consortium):

President Obama is peeling away. As you can see from the electoral vote (EV) estimator, he is the candidate with the momentum, not Romney. In terms of EV or the Meta-margin, he’s made up just about half the ground he ceded to Romney after Debate #1. And the indicators are still headed straight up.
    * * *

A few days ago, the word was that Team Romney was buying ads in Minnesota and Pennsylvania. If he wins either of those states I will eat a bug. Ohio…a really big bug. And yes, I will post a photo.

I read the notice about refueling in NYC to my husband, and he said, “It’s like D-Day. You have to have the co-ordination at the top.” Yes, you cannot have a number of little entities doing this kind of work. The Feds have the knowledge, expertise, and manpower to do this. I hope this event wakes up many people. The President and his administration have made so many constructive changes in operations these past four years!

I picked this link up at BJ – good for result watching
    http://peakvt.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/one-office-to-herd-them-all-november.html

This I liked “On election night, the first state to watch for will be Virginia, where polls close at 7PM EST. If Obama takes that state, he’ll almost certainly have won the election”

But I’m still not sure why North Carolina has not been moved into the President’s side. The early voting there was higher than in 2008 until the storm hit – and to my eyes the early voting looks good for PBO regardless. Maybe I’m missing something??

As a African American, these pundits don’t understand that we care about more than one issues. There are people who disagree with POTUS on the gay marriage issue, but if you were to ask us you would learn that we can disagree with POTUS some things, but when push come to shove, we agree with him on most things. And anything the pundits refuse to talk about is that alot of African Americans have watch all the B.S. this President have had to deal with, we have seen the disrespect he has had to deal with, and we know it’s only because he is black. We have seen how our right to vote is being threaten. So what I am saying these pundits don’t know us.

Not to be irreverent (wouldn’t be the first time), but, see, Mayor, you get your head outta your butt and endorse PBO and your city gets free food and water. And gas. Nice, huh?

      What a country!

This is a wonderful effort from everyone. I’m crying about what could have been done before/after Katrina – obviously the President and his administration thought long and hard about what was needed – as did the state governors.

Today is a great day. Just looking at these pics makes me realize that I am blessed to have this President and to see him reelected will be the best belated birthday present.

Nate Silver has stopped writing pundit stuff (not his forte) and has a great statistical discussion up today. He says the 17% still with Romney is to cover the fact that there may be bias in the polls. After explaining all this – and he thinks polls could be more biased – in EITHER direction than for 2000-2010 – for various reasons – he then adds

“Yes, of course: most of the arguments that the polls are necessarily biased against Mr. Romney reflect little more than wishful thinking.”

“Nevertheless, these arguments are potentially more intellectually coherent than the ones that propose that the race is “too close to call.” It isn’t. If the state polls are right, then Mr. Obama will win the Electoral College. If you can’t acknowledge that after a day when Mr. Obama leads 19 out of 20 swing-state polls, then you should abandon the pretense that your goal is to inform rather than entertain the public.

But the state polls may not be right. They could be biased. Based on the historical reliability of polls, we put the chance that they will be biased enough to elect Mr. Romney at 16 percent.”

Nate uses the maths to talk back at those who attack him.
