Steve Benen: The voting fiasco in Florida reached truly farcical levels yesterday, with Dan Smith, a political science professor at the University of Florida, explaining, “We’re looking at an election meltdown that is eerily similar to 2000, minus the hanging chads.”

…. The early-voting debacle in the Sunshine State is deliberate …. Florida Republicans designed the system to work this way.

…. I’ll just conclude with Rachel’s conclusion: “It is frankly an outrage that there are forces at work in our politics right now that not only make this type of situation possible, but that make it inevitable – who see problems like this and go out of their way to try to make it worse…. If you are one of those people being forced to stand in those long lines tonight or tomorrow or on Election Day, honestly, your country needs you to do it. Your country needs you to do it, not only because it’s your civic responsibility, but also because there are people trying to profit politically off of you not doing it.”

Michael Tomasky: Whatever the result tomorrow, voter suppression is one of the big stories of this campaign and its enduring scandal. The Republican Party before 2012 was a party that certainly did not want black and brown and poor Americans voting, so it’s long been officially racist and classist in this particular sense.

But up to now its measures were local and somewhat haphazard … now, though, in these past couple of years, the GOP strategy has been institutionalized …. For example, read here about what the secretary of state in Ohio is trying to do right now. It’s rather incredible.

…. Republicans: Are you really proud to be in a party that tries to rig the rules so that people who vote for the other side have a harder time voting? …. This is really a disgrace. The new Jim Crow, enforced not with burning crosses but with fountain pens, to paraphrase Woody Guthrie.

Charles Pierce: It appears that, while I was watching the president this afternoon, I missed another big moment in the ongoing mess that is the early voting being conducted here in the World’s Greatest Democracy, when all hell broke loose down in Miami-Dade county. The nonpartisan, but very conservative, mayor of Miami jumped in with both feet, with entirely predictable results….

Elections officials, overwhelmed with voters, locked the doors to their Doral headquarters and temporarily shut down the operation, angering nearly 200 voters standing in line outside — only to resume the proceedings an hour later….

…. Nearly all the voters stayed in line until a campaign worker reported her car had been towed from a private parking lot across the street. Scores of people ducked out of the line to check on their own cars. A second car had been towed.

My head may explode…..

A great good morning to you, Chips and everyone at TOD! Way to go, Carol!!

The fact that NC and FL are too close to call in PPP’s latest poll is really horrible news for Willard!! And, you know it was bone crushing for them late yesterday when they learned of the early voting tallies in NC – especially AA turnout!

And, let us all remember Mitch McConnell and the harm he has intentionally caused Americans …

Thank you, Chips:) Last day. Everyone reading this from regulars to lurkers, needs to get out and work in some capacity today for this amazing President. No excuses, no regrets. BE the change we want to see. Leave it all on the road. We do not get a do over!! I am NOT going back! Be part of history, be the change that you want to see in the world…do not let fear rule you or keep you from doing something positive for this President. It’s bigger than any one individual….we need you. Every last one of you. Call your local Dem office, call your local OFA office, but get off the couch and participate in this election and make your voices heard! Your heart will be happy and well with pride. Promise.

I can’t believe I actually have to go to my REAL job today and pretend to concentrate. Let’s do this thing, in a big way. This is history in the making and I will not let my President down!

Good morning folks. One day to victory. Today is going to be a good day. We are going to keep being positive, sending good vibes to the President and his team in Chicago and to the people out there in the trenches on this final day.

And remember to pray folks! The other side is praying too but our prayers will cancel out theirs because good overcomes evil, light overcomes darkness and there are some evil people and some dark forces on the other side.

So I am not putting on the television at all today, not even to look at Rev. Al. I am going on Youtube to find some music to lift my spirit and stay here with you folks.

Soon we will not have to see or hear the flip-flopper or his mate. As for squirrel head he will never go away,so all we can do is ignore him and take him for the puppet show he is.

Love you all. Love Chips even more and I thank God for her.

Good morning all. Was up at 5 am due to time change, so had a chance to catch up. Feel sick to my stomach about the voter suppression. Here in CA, we might even have less people voting because they think Californians won’t bother. As I watch others who have to wait in long lines, it makes me so mad that we don’t realize that ALL elections matter, especially the Secretary of State. I hope this gets fixed somehow. I really believe PBO will win, but these stories about voter suppression will be a major legacy of this election and that makes me sad.

  23. 76 utaustinliberal
    November 5, 2012 at 9:26 am

Those long voting lines are simultaneously an affront to our democracy and at the same time democracy in action. They are an affront because we have a party (republicans) trying to deny its citizens the right to express their choice. Cutting down early voting hours, reducing the amount of polling locations etc. On the other hand, they are an expression of democracy in that citizens are refusing to be brow beaten into not casting their vote and making their voices heard. They will fight to their last breath to cast their vote. The world is watching and the GOP is the scourge of the earth.

Well-stated UT. I’ve found that too many people stress the voter suppression part without emphasizing the determination on the part of voters – which is the triumph of democracy over oppression.

Hey look, gallup now galloping to cover its sorry ass.

Voters in swing states are evenly split between President Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney, according to a new poll from USA Today/Gallup.

The poll released late Sunday finds 48 percent of likely voters in the nation’s key battlegrounds backing Obama and 48 preferring Romney.

The numbers show a 4-point bounce for Obama from the last USA Today/Gallup Poll of Swing States in early October, taken days after a disappointing first debate for the president.

Obama also leads by 4-points among registered voters at 50 to 46, which the poll notes is the largest margin and the first time either candidate has hit 50 percent since Romney clinched the GOP nomination in the spring.

The poll shows Obama regaining a strong edge with female voters who had drifted towards Romney after the first debate, boosting the GOP challenger in national polls.

Obama now leads among women by 16 points, while Romney holds a 10-point advantage among men.

At least all these fuckers are now scampering to cover their sorry a$$es to reflect the reality.

        • November 5, 2012 at 10:04 am

How Gallup still have any credibility is beyond me, but I hope there’s a serious effort to mash them after this. The ****ers have been shilling for Romney every step of the way. Mittmentum!

          • November 5, 2012 at 10:08 am

Tampa bay times front page has the gallup numbers.
They are heavily respected, which could explain why the Republicans lobbied them?

            • November 5, 2012 at 10:23 am

That’s the thing Jovie, Gallup always had a big status in the polling world, but then they started shilling for the GOP. They more than any supposed neutral polling company have tried to drive the narrative of this election – Mittmentum! They produced outlier after outlier, and, needless to say, they were the ones reported all over the place.

If it wasn’t for 538 and some other state poll aggregators (sp?) we would be done in with the narrative. I think they should eliminate national polling for 50 state contests.

  29. 101 desertflower
    November 5, 2012 at 9:55 am

Obama edges into slight national lead: With a handful of national polls now showing Obama with a slight lead — Pew has Obama up three — Nate Silver says there’s enough evidence to surmise that the national polls are now coming into alignment with Obama’s slight edge in the electoral college. This reduces the likelihood that state polls are wrong.

Silver now puts Obama’s chances of victory at over 86 percent, and Romney’s at just over 13 percent — meaning Obama may have climbed back to where he was just before the Denver debate. The RCP and Pollster averages both have Obama slightly ahead, too.

SUGGESTION: can some of the tweeters send the rachel clip to people with many followers – eg. michael moore, jay z, Cher etc and ask them to retweet. She makes the case well for holding the line today. send it to other journalists too and ask them why they areen’t reporting or equally outraged. Call them out now – this is the scandal of the 2012 election. I just have to say that for us watching in other parts of the world were this sort of thing is not tolerated and clearly criminal we are (and I know I speak for many shocked and appalled). I’m sorry I don’t tweet otherwise I would have sent the message myself. I wish I could be more useful.

I’ve been super duper busy this last weekend with GOTV activities and am just catching up. But I had to write here just to comment on these pictures…. especially the one of the little boy. I have tears streaming down my face just looking at it. His hope, and our hopes, will all be realized tomorrow. I know this because we made 9,000 calls over the weekend. Yes, 9, 000… just our GOTV sight. I’ve never seen so much enthusiasm, and dedication and determination. Both on the part of the volunteers coming to make calls and that of the people being called. We had a 97 year old lady, with amputated legs, telling us she had to get to the polls and wanted a ride. We had people telling us stories of how long they had to wait in line for early voting. We had a lady come in with food for us after she heard that her friend of 30 years was making calls.

In the last four years I got to know an America that I barely knew existed, that of overt racism and bigotry. But over the last two days I got to see the side of America that shines and is a beacon for all immigrants like me. That of neighborliness, kindness, respect and grit. That’s the America that our President inspires and that’s the America I want to see going FORWARD.
