The Most Perfect of Days

I honestly don’t have the words to describe it all, but today has been the single best day of my life – even better than 2008.

See you in the morning. I’ll probably be late, but I’ll have photos and videos of everything.

You know what this means. Just like the President, the blog goes on for four more years!

Love you all.

I am glad both Rachel and Rev Al stopped Matthews rant with good sense. Chris wanted Obama to give credit to all Dems tonight to build up their party. I agree it was not the night to do that. What is wrong with CM? Partisan politics in his winner speech was not the way to do it.

Thank you everyone for working also to keep this place such a positive, uplifting home. Thank you to the long-time lurkers; come out to play guys. We make so many mistakes in the one language we speak and you can’t shut us up. Come on; do not be shy.
your first post can be about how you feel about the re-election of our president.

What a wonderful day; the good guys won.

Good night, everyone. I have to face my students at 7:05 am. See you later today.

  49. November 7, 2012 at 2:16 am

One more comment: It’s still all about how PBO defined Romney. Not a word about how Romney tried to define President Obama as ‘the other”, “lazy”, “let the grown-ups take care of it”, not to mention birther/transcript filth. Not. A. Word. Also I think we are “blaming” it all on the Hispanics – or Chris Christie. One or the other. Doesn’t matter, WE WON!!!

    • 95 daisydem
      November 7, 2012 at 2:25 am

Except it does matter to some degree. I really think we have to wage full on war against the media in this country. They have power because they have control and usage of the airwaves and people hear them. To sit there tonight and again, on day one, try and tell our President what to do, or what he should have said, or who he should have thanked, is wrong! They have no right, and they have no shame. We have the blogs and twitter. We must fight them. I do not want another four years of their nonsense.

The only saving grace for me not passing out after that eloquent speech was he did not slap the podium. If that has happened, I would have to call for oxygen.
The silly pundits talking on and on about nothing almost made me turn it off and wait for tomorrow to view the video here. It was a test an I did not think that I would make it. I have a very low tolerance for BS and I just cannot take too much of their pitiful, powerless opinions.

I just got back from the Fairmont where the President was until about midnight when he went to the McCormack Center. We didn’t intend to go to the Fairmont but we were watching the early returns across the street at my friend’s condo and decided to see if we could get in. It took all of 2 minutes to go through the metal detector and into the bar to see our President win on tv in the bar while he was up in his suite a few hundred feet away!

God it was so frustrating to watch how close it was – I was just sick with worry until Iowa happened. I didn’t think it would be that close.

So I am very grateful to everyone here for keeping it real and up-to-date, for all the hard work all volunteers put in and most especially for this venue TOD, that has allowed us all to be a family! Miz Chips you are amazing to keep this blog going through tick and thin.

I was going to write during the election to see if I would be seen as a newbie (cos I mostly lurk) or not. But the whole of today has just been a roller coaster. It has been easier to bear though by reading the news and comments from here, thus keeping this bird very sane and any hint of blood pressure issues non existence. I feel like I have not slept in 2 days but I absolutely do not care.

I feel blessed experiencing this phenomenon. America once again chose hope over hate, sane over crazy, calm over hysterical, truth over lies, a human over “whatever the other guy is”. This man Barack Hussein Obama is a man who has a complete heart for the people, I once prayed for a leader like him in my own country but only found my prayers answered in the USA. Some in the US know this, but I will state it anyhow (I am preaching to the choir here on TOD) Your President is a unique individual, the USA is indeed blessed!

    • November 7, 2012 at 7:46 am

For any Australians around – I had almost forgotten, President Obama will be in Brisbane in 2014 – how to get to see him is my next exercise – I think they are going to lock the town down – but my daughter lives near South Bank so it may be possible.

  87. November 7, 2012 at 4:04 am

So can I comment yet? The rules last week said after Tuesday…and technically…it’s after Tuesday! All I’ve wanted to say for the last few days is that you all are a breath of fresh air, a nice dose of sanity as I had been slowly freaking out here in southeastern Wyoming, surrounded by hateful right wingers. I visit daily for a healthy helping of Obama love.
I let my 5 1/2 year old daughter stay up and watch President O’s fantastic, stupendous speech. I’m either a very good momma (for wanting to plant that memory in her little, impressionable brain) or a very bad momma cause she will be a grumpy zombie tomorrow. I don’t regret it though. She watched history tonight and we were both high-fiving each other all night!

madranchwife, I let my son stay up late too (in fact he had his covers on the sofa last night and watched the election unfold). It was nearly 5 am by the time we (or should I say he) got some sleep but he was up at 7.30 for school bright eyed and bushy tailed – I guess we will pay heavily tonight with a huge dose of the grumps). It was an awesome night. I can’t keep my eyes open now though but must do the school pick up.
So glad that you posted and yes the speech was fantastic.

‘ “I just saw that video for the first time, and I think I can do that move,” said Obama, referring to the horse-dance move that Psy performs throughout the clip. Asked whether he would do the “Gangnam Style” dance if he is reelected president, Obama said, “I’m not sure that the inauguration ball is the appropriate time to break that out,” then suggested an alternative. “You know, maybe do it privately for Michelle.” ‘

if it matters to anyone at this point, pbo now has 50.1% of the popular vote to rwnj’s 48.4%. and the count is 57.9 mil to 55.9 mil. nothing iffy about it in the least. read somewhere that only fdr has earned a second term with such a strong showing. at this hour, they’re showing florida as 100% counted, but still ‘leans dem’. whatever. it’s ours, and that’s the end of it!!

Paul Begala on the Five Stages of GOP Grief.

The most powerful and profound words of the 2012 election were spoken by Michelle Obama: “Being president,” she said, “doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are.” So does running for president. Character is shown in adversity, and President Obama, who took office in the most adverse of circumstances; who stumbled critically in the first debate; who was hit with a depression in his first days of his term and a hurricane in the last, has shown his character. With his relentless, gifted, remarkable team he has accomplished a near-miracle—winning a second term with neither peace nor prosperity to run on.

    ……

So in an effort to help, Dr. Paul the campaign psychologist is here to walk you through your five stages of political grief. And don’t worry about paying me. I’ll be reimbursed by Obamacare because a) Obamacare is not going to be repealed; and b) the GOP’s loss was a pre-existing condition.

Full article makes some good practical points which I hope some moderate Republicans will take note of: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/11/06/paul-begala-on-the-five-stages-of-gop-grief.html

It was his commentary I had a problem with for the most part. It was part of the MSM narrative building which is generally very generous towards the Republicans and slightly hostile towards the Democrats. Over-exaggerating Obama’s “negative” and hyping up Romney’s “positives.” That’s what I had the problem with.

Florida Race Too Close to Call
Floridians must really love attention. President Obama won the election decisively, but the race in Florida remained too close to call. At dawn on Wednesday, Obama was leading the state by 0.53 percentage points, or 45,000 votes, out of a total of 8.27 million, with 99 percent of the votes counted—but the head of elections for Florida’s Miami-Dade County said final results would not be available until Wednesday afternoon. The county accounts for 10 percent of the state’s 12 million voters. The Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections blamed “an extremely high volume of absentee ballots” and long lines that kept some polls open for hours after the official closing time.

Analysis: Obama’s ground game makes difference in Florida

That’s the biggest take-away from President Barack Obama’s strong showing Tuesday in Florida, a state with such high unemployment and home-foreclosure rates that it was primed for a Republican win.

But, with thousands of votes still out Tuesday night, Obama appeared close to winning the nation’s largest battleground state, thanks to a mammoth grass-roots campaign. It may have killed Mitt Romney’s chance of unseating the incumbent.

More like a long nap….work today should be interesting!

My daughter came home from babysitting last night just as they were saying that PBO had this thing, and she was hooting and hollering! We cracked open the champagne (even though I was still busy with the g/t!) and made our toast to the greatest President in our lifetime. This President will always be special to my kids…it’s the first President they got to ever vote for…and I’m so thrilled that their first time was with him:)

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/11/06/a-thrashing.html

The first big thing is that a very clear majority of Americans saw the truth about the past four years. Exit polls showed that voters still blamed the economic problems on George Bush’s administration. They thought Obama tried hard and did a pretty good job (no, he hasn’t done a great job yet), and they notice the change and improvement recently. I didn’t write all these things down, but in state after state exit poll as they went through them on CNN, more people thought—finally!—that the economy was headed in the right direction.

The people know who created the problem, and they know who’s fixing it. That’s number one.

And number two? The second big thing here is that the Republican Party is just too far to the right. Not just to win a national election. It’s too far to the right even to compete really seriously in one. The thing some Republicans are saying now is absolutely true: They should have been able to win this year. No incumbent president has ever been reelected with this kind of unemployment rate, and there’s no good reason it should have happened now. They could have won.

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/11/07/obama-victory-signals-new-democratic-dominance-in-u-s-politics.html

Until Republican presidential candidates challenge some of the orthodoxies that are alienating America’s rising demographic groups, Republican presidential candidates will probably lose.

    snip/

Four years ago, it looked possible that Barack Obama’s election heralded a new era of Democratic dominance. Now it looks almost certain. In the early 20th century, the face of America changed, and only one party changed with it. In the early 21st century, that story has played itself out again. From the beginning, Obama has said he wants to be a transformational figure, a president who reshapes American politics for decades, another Reagan or FDR. He may just have achieved that Tuesday night.

    http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/11/07/14992802-yes-he-did?lite

As impressive as President Obama’s re-election victory is, it’s worth pausing to appreciate the larger context, because it wasn’t just his presidency on the line.

Had Obama come up short, the immediate threats to key public policies would have been significant, but the more sweeping consequence would have been the lasting damage to a progressive vision of governance.

It’s easy to imagine the recriminations this morning had the election gone the other way. The president’s 2008 victory would come to be seen as a faddish fluke, but more importantly, everything Obama fought for in his first term would be evidence of failure. For the foreseeable future, presidents would be told not to be ambitious, not to use government as a tool to make a material difference in the lives of working families, and not to rely on Keynesian economics to grow the economy through investments … or they too will end up as a one-term disappointment.

The 2012 election, then, can be seen as a referendum on Obama’s presidency — a test he passed yesterday in impressive fashion — and a referendum on the liberal experiment.
