Steve Benen: As fiscal talks continue in Washington, Republicans are already facing several disadvantages. Not only is President Obama holding a stronger hand — with looming tax hikes, he clearly has more leverage — polls show the American mainstream more likely to blame the GOP if talks fail.

But for Republicans, it gets worse. They have fairly specific policy goals in mind, but haven’t persuaded the public at all. Consider the results of the new ABC News/Washington Post poll, which I turned into a chart.

Washington Post: The White House signaled Tuesday that it will try to marshal the momentum from President Obama’s reelection triumph into another victory at the negotiating table, launching a full-fledged public relations effort to avoid a “fiscal cliff” that could jolt the nation back toward recession.

Administration officials said Obama will hit the road this week for a campaign-style series of events with ordinary Americans, including a visit to a toy manufacturer in suburban Philadelphia on Friday. That trip and others will be aimed at increasing pressure on Congress to reach an agreement on heading off a series of automatic spending cuts and tax increases that are scheduled to begin in January.

The push comes as top Democratic and Republican leaders work to avoid a standoff on the issue, which includes debate about Obama’s insistence that tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans enacted by President George W. Bush should expire.

Greg Sargent: In another big development this morning, Rep. Tom Cole is privately urging fellow Republicans to acquiesce to Dems and extend the Bush tax cuts for the middle class – then fight over the high end ones. Cole admits:

“Some people think that’s our leverage in the debate. It’s the Democrats’ leverage in the debate.”

This matters: Cole doesn’t typically break from GOP orthodoxy; it may mean GOPers really are coming to terms with who has the leverage here.

Well, the one thing you have to give the spotlight-humpers currently trying to make a meal out of the career of Susan Rice is they’re nothing if not predictable.

Rice, and acting CIA director Michael Morell, took time out of their busy schedules to go up to Capitol Hill and soothe the wounded fee-fees of John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and the inexplicable Kelly Ayotte …. who apparently has been adopted by Grumpypants and Huckleberry Closetcase because they can convince her that Susan Rice went to prom with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. So Rice and Morell give them the courtesy of a meeting that these three had no real right to demand, and this is what we get from Huckleberry when the meeting is over…..

….. This whole long con has passed now into the realm of pure McCarthyism …. No details. Nothing specific. Just John McCain, being troubled, as he has been since the country declined to make him its president…..

Steve Benen: At this point, when it comes to the political controversy surrounding the Benghazi attack, I’m no longer know what Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is complaining about. He’s raised questions, which have been answered. He’s raised theories, which have been debunked. He’s smeared Susan Rice, but he knows her only crime is sharing credible intelligence on a Sunday show.

And yesterday, the Republican senator’s descent into incoherence reached new depths.

// Deborah Carey, co-founder of Wisconsin’s New Glarus Brewing Co., was pretty excited to discover that her bag contained bottles of the President’s special White House homebrewed beer. “I got beer!” Carey exclaimed to reporters as she left the meeting, Politico reported. “I got beer from the White House!” //

BuzzFeed is just one step above from the tabloid trash that is the NY Post. They have no clue about the background to this so called “twitter war.” They just love jumping in and stirring BS. Who is “NYSouthPaw” and why doesn’t he or she reveal his/her full name instead of hiding behind some baseball terminology especially when writing for a well known publication such as BuzzFeed?

      • November 28, 2012 at 10:21 am

True, but they’re inviting this kind of coverage by having such a public war. Just wish someone would step in and get them to agree to a ceasefire.

So true Chips! I tried yesterday to tell shoq to cut it out. He was complaining about losing followers. I told him that it wasn’t so much because people were choosing sides (because most of us don’t think its our business and we really don’t want to be involved in this mess) it was because they were tired of seeing this played out on their TL day-in and day-out. It’s beyond outrageous at this point. Honestly I think shoq has “lost it” at this point. He needs to take a break and all the rest of the players in this drama need to cease and desist!

        • November 28, 2012 at 11:01 am

Why can’t Romney just have some shame and disappear into the ether? The way he lied about President Obama and insulted Americans in general – he should be hiding his face from here to the end of time. Instead, he seems to be getting a lot of attention – too much. Doesn’t the media understand that so many of us survived the campaign by thinking of the glorious day when we wouldn’t have to see his face again or hear his lying voice?

Sometimes I think President Obama is a bit too “empathetic” lol… This is a generous gesture towards Romney, evidently aimed at sending a message to republican voters that “we can disagree without being disagreeable” .

But, PLEASE president Obama, after Romney used lies and deceit in the campaign, don’t give him a seat on any economic, business committee or “commission” !!! Romney is a vulture capitalist and represents exactly what’s wrong in the economy, both on the national and global levels !

Good Morning Chips and TODobots! It’s Wednesday, and a good day in the nation of Obama-Biden, rright?

TODville has a special promise to keep – praying or sending positive wishes outward and upward for FRED as she undergoes major surgery today. Since we don’t know the time of her surgery I’m suggesting/asking that we don’t put our wishes all in one spot (like here), but spread them out throughout the day whenever Fred crosses our minds. It could be a single sentence, enough to remind us to keep the positive chain going. I once read somewhere, ages ago, that though doctors couldn’t explain it, some ‘felt’ the difference in the case of patients who are ‘prayed for’. If true, let’s make sure they feel it today during Fred’s surgery.

Here’s to a good day, all around!

Morning and Joyfulness to Chips and my TOD Family. That is a great thought vc. Spread our thoughts and prayers throughout the day.

Well, I started early this morning. Went in and lit the candles on the piano next to the lovely flower for Fred. Sat and prayed for our POTUS, VPOTUS, and their families and my brother. That is natural posture everyday.

Then I was lead to read Ps. 91 for POTUS and VPOTUS. A sweet spirit was in the room with me and I gave it to the presence of our beautiful Fred to be fine throughout this surgery.

Went downstairs and it was just breaking dawn and I lit the candles downstairs and place one of my favorite CDs of my favorite hymns sung by a great baritone and it was so peaceful. I must keep that spirit that our Fred will be fine.

We have so much to be so grateful for on our beautiful site, and I give thanks to the angels of sweet love, mercy, grace, and protection for each of you and ofcourse, I give thanks for our Chips. What a beautiful family of support our POTUS has behind him.

We are going to be just fine. Keep your spirits open to good things, gentle things, pure things, joyful things, and when the journey gets a little turbulent, just hold on to our inner love for each other and stand firmly to what we believe in our heart. We are here to help POTUS be the best president ever for this time in our lives.

I was reading something after showering and dressing, and I would like to share with my TOD family.

Start each day by saying,”I will do my best today,” and avoid, if you can, criticzing yourself for not doing everything perfectly. Make your caregiving of yourself an act of love, and not obligation totally. Ask God or whom you pray to, to give you grace, love, and to surround you with a peaceful heart as you whisper prayers to the One you speak to daily. Each to his/her own private One. Spread your hope and joyfulness through your day.

I give these to Fred from all of us :

Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) urged fellow House Republicans Tuesday to join President Obama and pass an extension of the Bush tax cuts for households earning less than $250,000 immediately, Politico reports.

At a meeting of the House GOP whip team earlier in the day, he made the case that Republicans would strengthen their position by joining hands with President Barack Obama now to give most taxpayers what he calls “an early Christmas present” of ensuring their taxes don’t go up on Jan. 1…

“I think we ought to take the 98 percent deal right now,” he said of freezing income tax rates for all but the top 2 percent of earners. “It doesn’t mean I agree with raising the top 2. I don’t.”

The thing about Congress playing around with the 98% is that the same 98% is busy shopping for the holidays right now. They will be done shopping in a couple of weeks (for the most part). And they need to know that the GOP aren’t going to hold them hostage and plunge the country into recession for their precious 2%. Just think about the impact to the economy if the 98% have to restrain themselves from holiday shopping because of GOP games. They need to pass the Senate bill now.

I’ve just received my “CNN Breaking News” e-mail about the lunch between the 47% Mittster and the President. I hope it is set for 12:47 pm and that the cake with the 47 number above is served as dessert.

Since Romney got the majority of Wall Street support as well as that of the billionaires, he should bring them on board for the sake of this country. The President is a great man, a man of vision who can put personal feelings aside to do what’s right. I hope the Mormon Bishop can pull himself to reach that level. Barack Obama loses adoptive Native American father
By Rachel Weiner , Updated: November 28, 2012

President Obama’s adopted Crow Nation father has died.

Hartford Black Eagle, 78, died at home in his sleep at Lodge Grass, Mont., the Sun Herald reports.

In May 2008, Obama became the first American presidential candidate to visit the reservation of the Crow Nation. During his trip he was adopted by Hartford and Mary Black Eagle as a member of the nation. Hartford chose the name “Awe Kooda Bilaxpak Kuxshish,” or ”One Who Helps People Throughout This Land.”

After the ceremony, Obama described his adoptive parents as ”the nicest parents you could ever want to know.” He added, “I like my new name. Barack Black Eagle. That is a good name!”

    [Awww! RIP]:

On Monday night, the president lost his adopted father, who was also a spiritual leader for the tribe. After battling emphysema and pneumonia, Hartford Black Eagle, 78, died in his sleep at home at Lodge Grass, Mont., according to his son, Cedric, the chairman of the Crow Tribe.

As the family prepared to make funeral arrangements Tuesday afternoon, Cedric Black Eagle said his mother was expecting a telephone call from the president later in the day. He said his father was proud to count the president among his sons, though he never made a big deal about it.

“He didn’t really brag about it,” Cedric Black Eagle said.

The White House didn’t respond late Tuesday to a request for comment.

It marked the second death in the Black Eagle family this month. On Nov. 16, Marilyn Black Eagle, Obama’s 55-year-old adopted sister, died in a two-car traffic accident. An obituary published in The Billings Gazette listed the president and first lady Michelle Obama among the survivors.

    [Fascinating …}:

The United States, in consultations with Israeli negotiator Yitzhak Molho in Washington in recent days, has urged Israel not to overreact to Palestinian plans to seek upgraded status at the United Nations on Thursday, advice Israel seemed inclined to take.

France on Tuesday said it would support the Palestinians’ bid to seek non-member observer status at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

British diplomats indicated Tuesday that Britain is still undecided how it will vote.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke with British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Tuesday about the issue, the State Department said, adding it agreed to disagree with France over its decision to back the Palestinian bid.

“With regard to France and any other countries, we obviously disagree with our oldest ally on this issue,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told journalists at the State Department Tuesday. “They know that we disagree with them, but it’s their sovereign decision to make how to proceed.”

[,,,,] Update: Germany said Wednesday it would vote against the Palestinian measure, while Britain said it might abstain. Several other European nations, including Spain, Portugal, Austria, Finland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Malta, Ireland and Switzerland, said they would join France to vote in favor of it. Australia, following an uproar in its ruling party over plans to vote against the measure, was likely to abstain.

Now we get to the bottom of Susan Collins’s attack on Amb. Rice’s character. She wants John Kerry’s senate seat vacated.

The only thing that I am getting from these meetings are the repugs all coming out saying the same thing. I don’t see Amb. Rice gaining anything from these meetings. It just keeps the issue alive and more MSM coverage.

It just keeps the issue alive and more MSM coverage.

Which I’m sure the GOP see as a blessing, however, I’m hoping it works in the reverse, with more and more people becoming aware of their manipulation and irrelevancy. My personal regret is that Susan Rice actually responded to them and stated her willingness to respond to their questions. Of course, if we were on the ball we’d help in ensuring that the take on this action was that she is being open and bipartisan – which is only the truth after all.

Susan Collins is doing a grave disservice to Amb. Rice’s character. She’s connecting her to the bombings at the U.S. Embassies in Africa in 1998. She attacked Rice in a highly personal manner. This is sad. What they’re doing to Amb. Rice is beyond the pale.

I’m not listening, but my question is: How much longer will PO let this go on before he “lets loose” on these creeps?

PBO is not “letting” anything go on. It’s the media who keeps giving these Republicans a platform to spew their hate. Thats who we need to go after. We all already know exactly where PBO stands regarding Susan Rice and the GOP attacks against her.

In a way, I would love to see Amb. Rice resign her current position and take herself out of the running for SOS. Our country – with these Republican dogs in it – does not deserve her. But then the awful Rs would say she had something to hide and left because of them. Since she has nothing to hide, she will stay and remain the gracious, loyal, distinguished public servant she is now, probably because she has President Obama’s full support. I think I’d “stay around” with his full support, too.

Nope. She shouldn’t. Enough with falling for lunatic ransom demands from the thugs.

harry reid should move his ass on filibuster reform., especially on admin’s appointments.

Of course, I know this and agree wholeheartedly. It’s just that I wish it would happen, for a little poetic justice. I’d like to see her slap the podium and yell FU behind her, as she walked off.

I’m for Amb. Rice sticking right there. No way does she resign, hell no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • November 28, 2012 at 11:54 am

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stay where she is and follow through with the nomination.

HF, I know what you mean about PO “letting” them continue this. I also know he spoke very forcefully at his press conference about what is going on, his support for her, etc. I just wonder how long before he says something else and this time, even more forcefully.

I am so mad right now at the Repubs at the way they are attacking Ambr Rice!!!!! I am going to be calling emailing, and tweeting all of them. They all supported to race to war in Iraq and now they are being such hypocrits. I am ready to go to war against all of them. I am ready to go over the cliff. I will take any financial hit if it will bury these Repubs.

mtmarilyn, I think that is a great idea, we should contact these Senators, write, email, tweet, call or whatever and let these rascals know exactly what we think of the disgusting way they are treating Amb. Rice.

We have our voices now. I am no longer willing to allow the msm to always go with the Repubs. We spoke in this election and the Repubs don’t care. We must speak out and support our President and his cabinet.

You need a good laugh today? Read Stuart Stevens’s (Chief Strategist for the Romney campaign) Op-Ed as to why Romney was such a fantastic candidate. No wonder Romney was stuck in a bubble. He had this fool telling him he was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

[OT, not sure if it's been posted ...]:

Damascus: Syria’s state news agency says 34 people were killed in this morning’s twin car bombings in the Jaramana district of Damascus.

It said a further 83 people were injured, citing the interior ministry.

There is widespread scepticism among activists at the government’s version of events. They speculate that the government is behind the blasts as a way of spreading fear among Syria’s minorities. Many Druze and Christians live in Jaramana.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The President meets with Romney for a lunch Tomorrow at WH.
Some of the comments made by Romney and his staff, leads me to believe that Rimbey will not be offered a position.
But, we will see. The President is very forgiving providing he is not a recidivist offender, like McCain.

And 4 years ago, it was widely stated that the McCain meeting was a reason for working across the aisle.
McCain did none of that, makes me believe something extraordinary was said during that meeting.
So, don’t listen to Pundits and watch Romney be offered something business wise?

Please tell me what do anyone think this President should offer Mitt Romney business wise? I say let Mitt Romney go on off into the sunset. Good-bye to Mitt Romney.
