I think Romney would have felt this loss deeply. i don’t think he would have handled it as gracefully and with such heartfelt emotion showing. Seeing him wipe the tears from his eyes really brought home to me what had happened. I have been teaching myself all day, and only heard a bare outline at the midafternoon staff meeting. I logged on here just as the live stream began.
Some callers on the radio say the President is not showing backbone on this issue. Somehow, the term Dictator has gotten linked to President in many American’s heads.
He’s not showing back bone?? What the heck do they mean? What do they want him to do? Can’t they (whoever they are) just for once be quiet and let this be about the tragedy and not about themselves?
Why are you telling us this right now, Martha?? What some numbskulls are saying on the radio About the President is irrelevant right now. Is that how YOU feel? Is that why you brought it up at this time? Since when did a “Dictator” not have any “backbone”. Just where are you coming from?
You want this job because you have a heart that truly cares about your fellow man. What you saw standing up there today was a man who really cared about the lost of those children, and I am so thankful we have a man like that in the Oval Office.
No. Every time I think about the images I saw of children running out of the school in tears; some of them with their eyes closed, it breaks my heart and chokes me up.
No sweetheart, we are right here with you. And I had just left the cemetery with my 79 year old aunt who for the last 10+ years I have taken her there at least twice a year to put flowers on 6 graves, two of those belonging to my parents, my mother being her sister, when I heard the news via text from my son. He only said, ” I had been in the field testing all morning, just got back to the lab and heard the news. God Save Us All!” My heart jumped into my throat as I had no idea, since I too had been away from laptop, tv, even left cell phone in the car at the cemetery … thoughts were 1. we’ve been attacked again 2. something has happened to my President (God forbid), but I did not know. Then I find out and my heart weeps for the innocence taken from us, for the pain the families must feel. We have an even of Christmas activities planned; I thought maybe we should cancel, but one is a party where we take items for the homeless like “handwarmers”, ponchos, tolietries, life goes on, they will need these items no less tomorrow or next week then today, right? I am usually one on the fence about gun control. But…this…this…18 children. This is not cool.
You cannot tell me one man could have killed 27 people and 18 children, as collateral damage in his anger against one person with a knife. All in broad daylight and at a school no less. It just is not possible. At the very least we need to reinstate the assault weapons ban.
A man comes at me with a knife, I know enough self defense to have a shot at taking him down. A man comes at me with an assault rifle and I’m dead. Simple as that.

Many of then have children. They are beyond common sense at times, but humans they are too. It could be any of their children. That is why it hurts more than anything else for with children, they have no defense when someone is shooting at them. How sad? Horrific.
Piercve, as usual is right on. The following is just an excerpt, but ties in today’s happenings with what it means to be a part of this country:

Powerful statement and I’m in tears. My President weeps for those who will never play again and I can’t contain the flood of tears. These two statements stand out:
“They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.”
“We’re gonna have to come together as Americans…regardless of politics.”
This was an apt and fitting statement. And gives me hope that something will change.

This I believe, PBO would be willing to spend major political capital on. No way he can be as inclusive and mindful and let this be left ony up to the neanderthals in favor of weaponry, but he will depend wholeheartedly on us, his supporters.
For those who missed the briefing, this is a little bit of what was said. I’m still in tears and I thank Pres. Obama for showing us this side of him once again. He’s a father first and he just reminded us that there are parents who are going to be heartbroken for the rest of their lives.

I just heard the president and the number of children killed is heartbreaking. I worked in schools for my professional career and we were greatly affected by Columbine. This is even worse. My heart is breaking and as so many of you the tears can’t stop.
I worked for 30 plus years in public mental health clinics, including coordinating crisis services and mental health commitment in a county in Oregon. I came across many individuals, most of them young adult males, who were deranged and needing immediate mental health attention, who were capable of committing murders like these. These young mentally ill men should not have access to military style assault weapons or any guns for that matter. Our Supreme Court, the GOP, and the NRA are responsible for these deaths.
bill, i too have worked in the mental health field. and i have seen the shortage of staff and resources limit the ability of the system to monitor or evaluate or make appropriate recommendations for the care of people who were in severe mental health crises. and there was little to care to offer: some pills that they might or might not take.
yes, we need to address our national relationship with guns, and severely limit access to guns. absolutely. and we also need to look at how we’ve stripped resources from the system that would intervene before deranged individuals could make and act on a deadly plan. thank you for bringing this issue into the discussion today.
The president reached out to us as human beings. If anyone complains that he should have been tougher in this speech, I’m going to tell them to go to hell. He said we have to do something about guns, regardless of the cost. Now is not the time to list what that something is. That’s our job and the job of every elected representative. The president is feeling this deeply. It’s a national tragedy of epic proportions. We would not be human if we didn’t take time to grieve and to comfort one another, no matter what the Michael Moore’s of this world say. Then we gather our forces together and fight and keep on fighting until we win. There are more of us than there are of gun worshipers. We will out organize, out fight and out vote them. Conservative haters got together and unfairly organized the demise of Acorn. One day we will ensure that the NRA goes down and, unlike Acorn, ITS demise will be fair and it will be justified.

It was probably announced before the President came out that there would be no questions, but I’m so glad there were no questions. Even Chuck Todd’s voice had a catch in it, as he mentioned there wasn’t a sound out of anyone in that room.
One of the few times I have observed the President struggle mightily to maintain his composure, obviously terribly saddened and grieved at today’s events.

“We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years, and each time I hear the news, I react not as a president but as everybody else would, as a parent,” Obama said, wiping tears from his eyes as he spoke at the White House. “And that is especially true today. I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do.”

The police at the press briefing said the official death toll is 20 children dead and 6 adults dead. (26 in total). 18 children were killed on the scene, 2 died in the hospital.
I was not home all day. I was out running errands and I listen to CD’s in my car and not the radio. I heard nothing of this horrible incident until I sat down here at the computer and my first stop (as always) was TOD. I have not seen the TV and I don’t think I can watch it. I did go to Twitter and then to YouTube and saw the same video of the President as the one above. I don’t have the words to express how I feel. People handle grief differently. For some strange reason I keep thinking how am I going to go to my Zumba class at 6:00. Then I think to myself “you’re insane – you’re thinking about Zumba? I’m sitting here and I don’t know what to do. Should I stay seated or get up. I must be in a shock. I can’t grasp this. I can’t understand it.

The President’s statement with all his humanity before us, is on the mark. 32 years ago I lost my little boy. It is a grief that is a wound beyond belief, and at the time I thought beyond my capacity to bear. There is nothing that can take it away, but it is good to know that the rest of humanity stands with you and you are not alone in your pain, a pain that will last as long as you live.

He was full of light and joy, a Pied piper for his friends and school mates, deeply loved by so many. I wept on hearing this news this afternoon.. for everyone concerned… for those killed, for their parents and other family members who are devastated and for those who lived through the horror. Cried again with President Obama. Will keep everyone in prayer. We need to do everything possible to stop this kind of madness.

Bill, as a parent who has also lost children my heart breaks for you and all those affected by today’s satanic actions of a deranged miscreant. Nothing takes away the pain of the loss of a child, you learn to bear it because you have to but not a day goes by without missing that precious life cut short by whatever means. Bill, I truly share your grief and your understanding of what parents go through when they lose children. I lost my 16 year old daughter (first born) 20 years ago to cancer. To be honest, the pain of that loss has never gone away. I feel so deeply about the parents who lost their precious children today. Like the President, it’s so hard to fight the tears thinking about the horror inflicted on these precious children and their teachers, and the utter pain and despair their parents and loved ones must be going through.

But even though we’ve taken these actions, they’re not enough. Other steps to reduce violence have been met with opposition in Congress. This has been true for some time — particularly when it touches on the issues of guns. And I, like most Americans, believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms. And we recognize the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation -– that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage.
But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals — (applause) — that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities. I believe the majority of gun owners would agree that we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons; that we should check someone’s criminal record before they can check out a gun seller; that a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily. (Applause.) These steps shouldn’t be controversial. They should be common sense.
So I’m going to continue to work with members of both parties, and with religious groups and with civic organizations, to arrive at a consensus around violence reduction — not just of gun violence, but violence at every level, on every step, looking at everything we can do to reduce violence and keep our children safe -– from improving mental health services for troubled youth — (applause) — to instituting more effective community policing strategies. We should leave no stone unturned, and recognize that we have no greater mission as a country than keeping our young people safe. (Applause.)

Day Before Connecticut Shooting Massacre, Michigan Legislature Passed Bill Allowing Guns In Classrooms

On Thursday, one day before the tragedy in Connecticut where at least 29 people were killed at an elementary school, the Republican-controlled Michigan legislature passed a bill that would allow people to bring guns into schools.
Amidst a lameduck session that has spawned a host of right-wing legislation, including a so-called “right-to-work” law and an extreme abortion ban, a “sweeping rewrite of Michigan’s concealed handgun law” was also approved yesterday. The legislation changes Michigan’s gun laws in a number of ways, including making it easier for people to receive a gun permit and opening up “gun free zones,” including schools and elsewhere, to people carrying concealed firearms.
The legislators in Michigan have gone stark staring mad. It’s time for someone to haul out the nets. They have lost all control, all sense and have surrendered the last shred of responsibility.
Hi everyone, I know there’s only so much more sadness anyone can take, but just to let you know – CTGirl has been in touch to say that first she heard today that the daughter of a close friend had died in the shootings, and then she got a call to say her father had passed away.

Bloomberg is shameful. He immediately attacked PBO’s statement, saying that “calling for meaningful action” is not enough. I wonder how many of the families of the victims has he called or comforted since the event.
I try to carry a sweet spirit within my space, but we all have our moments because of this world of such unsettled people who carry with them a spirit of constant ill will for others who are trying to do the very best in the situations that come their way. I just watched PBO’s statement and read about CTGirl. I can barely compose myself. If you are human, there are limits with this kind of senseless violence. I cannot fathom the terror those innocent children have suffered.
Whoa…people are gathering outside the white house. Some are expressing sympathy for the tragedy that occurred and some are holding signs saying: “It’s Time For Gun Control.”
1. I hope they gather in front of the halls of Congress. Since that’s where law is made.
2. I hope they do more than gather. The NRA is powerful, and has become more so since the assault weapon ban expired in 2004. The only thing which will destroy it as a force is if we collectively say “ENOUGH”, and make sure our representatives know that their jobs are on the line. Once my numbness is gone, letters are going out to my Senators, my Rep, and the two California Democratic House members who get donations from the NRA. And they will be getting them at regular intervals until old gun laws are enforced and new strictures are in place.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A tearful President Barack Obama said Friday he grieved first as a father about the massacre at a Connecticut elementary school, declaring, “Our hearts are broken today.” He called for “meaningful action” to prevent such shootings but did not say what it should be.
“The majority of those who died were children – beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,” Obama said.
At that point he had to pause for several seconds to keep his composure, and he wiped his eyes.
The scene in the White House briefing room was one of the most emotional moments of Obama’s presidency. Near him, two senior aides cried and held hands as they listened to the president.
Some 27 people, including 20 children, were killed when a gunman opened fire inside the school. The shooter blasted his way through the building as young students cowered helplessly. The dead included the shooter.
The story jolted parents and other people across the nation, and the White House was no different.
Obama began his comments with no greeting. He ended them with words of Scripture, walking away in silence.
He recited the future milestones lost, and had to pause again to gather his words.
“They had their entire lives ahead of them – birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own,” the president said of those who were killed.
He ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on public grounds through Tuesday.
I was out today renewing my CPR card and doing my CPR skills making sure I know how to help people found unresponsive and pulseless and then I come and find out about this.
This is just so senseless and something that hopefully will allow discussion to proceed on how to improve mental health services, teach people how to detect mental health issues in a family member or friends and how to get them the help they need, and how to make it hard for people who are not stable mentally to have their hands on huge weapons and a bunch of ammunitions.

My heart is broken in a million pieces today…for the victims of this horrible massacre…sorry that’s what it was…for CTGirl, for Bill and for my friend who just yesterday found out from one of her students that her father was murdered. I’m just numb.
We were all excited at work today because one of my aides became a father for the first time this morning. I will tell him to hold that baby close and love him with all his might.

What if all ammo for certain guns banned, and for others limited…………or horror……..controlled. Track down where his guns were bought, bars have to answer up for serving too many drinks, time for sellers of guns to answer up. 40% of guns sold without background checks, excuse me, WTF!
Easy. Do a recall just like you do cars. Pass a law limiting the number on guns each person/household can have legally. Set up an exchange for guns to be turned in. Set up an amnesty period after which if caught with a unregistered gun it will invoke a warrent that will result in all your property being confiscated and your ass thrown in jail. They do it now with drug dealers. Why not gun nuts?

Forus, we can still hold legislators accountable for the endless stream of mindless legislation allowing guns in schools, bars,parks, etc. If people already have guns, lock them in your home; but don’t carry them anywhere you go. Every state and federal representative has to no that from now on we won’t tolerate anything that lessens restrictions on carrying guns.
Yeah, it’s just that with those types of laws those of us without weapons are treated like criminals with searches and security to keep the gun toters out. Our public spaces and other places of gathering are now like prisons. We are prisoners in our own country thanks to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction available faster than buying movie tickets.

I was driving home for lunch. I was thinking that this upcoming Tuesday was the last Storytime I’d be doing before my Xmas vacation. I was thinking about what to tell these wonderful kids, and the only things I could think about were “Stay safe” and “I love you all”. That pretty much made me lose it.

We had fun walking to the library, and the librarian was so wonderful with my students because they were so well behaved and she did not have to stop in the middle of her story time. Yet, if we are faithful to forge ahead and “if we do not give up”, (Gal.6:9) , someday we will know that the most exquisite work of our lives was done during those days when it was the darkest.

The school official made a damn effort to try and shield the kids who were evacuated out of the school from the massacre that had unfolded, reports are that they told kids to walk single file and close their eyes as they walk passed the massacre in the principal’s office.
I hope the image of those kids haunts those who interviewed them and put them on cameras.
We The People need to hear from the kids. They break it down their own way without politics, just with pure heart and sincerity. Their parents OK’ed for them to speak. She is a Democrat. Her husband was killed on the Long Island commuter train by a gunman in 1993. She ran for Congress, won, and is the most anti-gun person in Congress.
That is why I was shocked at the initial comments. The late Ted Kennedy was just as against gun violence for he and his family had lived it. She earned the right to speak.
Her intentions are good – she’s just going about it the wrong way. Apparently, her husband was a fatal victim of gun violence and her son severely injured in the same attack. She spoke to the Administration before the election, telling them that she was going to take up gun legislation after the election, and create a public campaign. She seems to want to lead a congressional charge for change – she just needs to know that the tough talk should be directed at her colleagues in Congress – not at the President, who would sign a sensible and effective gun control bill if one was presented to him. She could be an effective ally, but she needs to get her facts straight, and her strategy straight, too. The President is on her side.
So sad…this tragedy is an anathema to everything we hold dear. There aren’t enough words or prayers to help these children recover, to help the families who have lost their loved ones but pray we must and keep praying because they need all the help and support they can get. Loss of the future potential of these children is horrific. The president was superb in his words and emotion. My heart aches for the families.
I don’t understand what thing or event in a person’s life could damage their soul so badly that they could do this — to anyone, muchless innocent babies and teachers of babies.

This week had been an enjoyable one for me, up to the moment when my neighbour called me at work this afternoon and told me of this dreadful tragedy in the USA. I use the word ‘enjoyable’ because I had to attend all our elementary schools’ Christmas concert in my role as Education Officer responsible for curriculum and examinations. And at every event, the stars were the five to ten year olds. They were fearless and funny, and their exuberance at been in the spotlight was transmitted to us, the audience. We couldn’t help but respond with cheers, heart-felt laughter and love. These are the stars that will brighten our future existence. I was happy.
And then the news of the senseless slaughter of American innocence reached us, and everyone of us at the Ministry of Education became speechless and heartbroken. Eyes welled with unstoppable tears, for some have children as young as those killed in Connecticut. We all expressed our wishes of healing and comfort for the affected parents, relatives and the nation.
To the members of this virtual family, and to the entire US population, please know that we, here in Montserrat, are praying for you, that your tears will wash away your sorrow and that time will heal your hearts. Scripture states, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”. Scripture also says of our children, “Forbid them not to come unto me, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. Those little angels are back in the arms of their Creator. Yes, you are hurting, but again, scripture comforts us with these words, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning”.
I also extends words of comfort to CTGirl on the passing of her dad.

I am very new to this community but it seems to many people part of this community and loved ones have left earth way to soon, especially those innocent people in Newton. Quite frankily, I have been trying to come up with some kind of summation to make sense of these things, post info as it comes in and well….. I dont know seems pointless. The only silver lining I can think of is we are fortunate enough to have our own sort of *therapy* group to get things of our chest even if it comes with the anonymity of behind a computer screen. So I thank you all for that.
On the previous thread I posted that I made 6 calls this afternoon to TN reps. Had an ugly experience w/the aide in Stephen Fincher’s office. Note he is listed first on this list from the NRA. I also said on Facebook that if EVERY person who is so sad and angry would make calls CHANGE would occur. I reminded them that it is WE the PEOPLE and up to us to push this movement.
They’re waiting for Obama to make the calls himself. Then they’ll sit behind their computers and blog/tweet that he didn’t call soon enough, speak loudly enough, or this or that…
CTGirl…I am so sorry for your and especially your friends loss. As a mother…I lost my breath just missing my son under the cloths rack in a store while shopping. I cannot even imagine what it would be to lose a child. We as parents are suppose to go first.
This happened to my school a few years ago. We had a code Red Lock down. That is lock your students in the closet in your classrooms with all lights off. We had to make sure our classroom doors were lock, lights off, children in the closet with lights out and door locked.
Yes. we had a gunman on campus. Seems there was an armed robbery down the street…four gunman involved and one wound up on our campus. I was walking with one of the students I mentored. WE saw the gunman at the LOCKED door through the window at the side of the building. Four long hours later we were allowed out.
What a frightening experience! Thank heavens that you were safe out of that incident, and sad that every time this happens, you have to remember what happened to you.
I kind of wish the media wasn’t publicizing the “kids in the closet” plan, because these criminals don’t need a map of where the kids will be in the case of another emergency like this.

Latest reporting makes clear that a lot of the initial reporting was misleading. I thought the shooter’s mother was a kindergarten teacher and killed in the classroom The shooter’s mother was shot in the face at home and was never a teacher, may have volunteered at the school some time in the past. I thought the killer killed his father in Hoboken, N.J.—-father is alive and being interviewed by police, same with the brother, who works for Ernst and Young, both not expected to have any role in the horror today. I thought the brother was the “2nd suspect” which was shown being taken down by the police outside the school. I don’t know who that was. And a relative said the shooter was obviously mentally ill. Yes, obviously. Why didn’t the family make sure he was getting the mental health help he needed, hospitalized even since he was very ill. I always wonder about the family role in these kind of cases. There are always signs that these mass killers are seriously ill before they commit these horrendous acts—–like the perpetrator in the Gabby Giffords case. He was obviously horribly obviously mentally ill to one and all and no one, his family primarily, made sure he was being treated so he could do no harm to others. Families have an obligation to get mental health help for their family members, just as they would for any kind of health problem. The people who act out in these horrific, tragic ways do not just wake up one day as a monster. The signs have been there for years.
May I suggest you’re being somewhat harsh without knowing the facts? This was a 20 year old which in this country means he was a free adult. Mental illness is like so many other illnesses, you cannot help someone who does not help themselves, and unless you can prove they are an imminent danger to society you cannot lock them up, force them to take meds, etc. Moreover, as a society we have cut mental health treatment and services for the last 20 years. Is it any wonder we have so many people who need help that are not getting treatment? We need to answer for these tragedies as a society. As Joey B says, our budgets reflect our priorities and mental health services have fallen way down the list.
Harsh? Sorry—strongly disagree.. He did not just wake up at age 20 with mental illness. AS a relative described him tonight, he was obviously mentally ill. The family knew it. The signs had likely been there for years, as is usually the case. They had an obligation to seek help for their own, same as if he had a broken leg or a bad heart.
I remember Reagan cutting funding for mental institutions. The fact is many violent criminals in prisons are mentally challenged. They are locked away in prisons because there are not enough mental facilities to house and treat them. Also, lets be real. It’s harder for black and brown young men to get help. Many in jails are also illiterate. The country has a problem. We have over 1 million people in prison. Of course, the Repubs love the fact that so much money can be made off locking up people in private prisons.
Sometimes families don’t know what to do. They either don’t know what questions to ask or don’t trust doctors. Sometimes they can’t even afford the help.
To Bill, CTgirl and all those who have suffered unspeakable loss and tragedy – my thoughts are with you.
In the coming days a name and shame campaign of congress members in the pocket of the NRA would go a long way towards educating and informing the general public. I am convinced that once in possession of the facts American people everywhere will demand action. Perhaps Bloomberg and some rich pals can fund a PSA series of ads around the country? That would be a good start if he were serious about addressing the problem and counteracting the NRA propaganda that has been allowed to flourish unchecked. I am certain that PBO will move on gun control.
I live in a country with a population less than 10% than that of the US – but we implemented gun control after a massacre that killed (from memory) 36 people. The Washington Post had an article about it back in August. It would be difficult to do in the US – but surely not impossible if congress worked as a unit (is that even possible at the minute) and everyone works towards that goal.
Perhaps when it seems impossible – it is the time to be active. When a country has the death of its own children to consider – perhaps there can be some hope – It was the parent who lost his children in the Port Arthur tragedy who fought with his heart & soul to get the weapons out of Australian homes.
Unfortunately congress (house of representatives) works as little as possible and if PBO wants it, then it won’t happen. They barely get things done that they agree should get done.

And I had just left the cemetery with my 79 year old aunt who for the last 10+ years I have taken her there at least twice a year to put flowers on 6 graves, two of those belonging to my parents, my mother being her sister, when I heard the news via text from my son. He only said, ” I had been in the field testing all morning, just got back to the lab and heard the news. God Save Us All!” My heart jumped into my throat as I had no idea, since I too had been away from laptop, tv, even left cell phone in the car at the cemetery … thoughts were 1. we’ve been attacked again 2. something has happened to my President (God forbid), but I did not know. Then I find out and my heart weeps for the innocence taken from us, for the pain the families must feel. We have an even of Christmas activities planned; I thought maybe we should cancel, but one is a party where we take items for the homeless like “handwarmers”, ponchos, tolietries, life goes on, they will need these items no less tomorrow or next week then today, right? Oh my, it is just so heavy. I just want to say, I love you all. Please continue to do what you do. You keep me grounded. I hurt to see my President hurting and he was just now. Love, daisydem

You cannot tell me one man could have killed 27 people and 18 children, as collateral damage in his anger against one person with a knife. All in broad daylight and at a school no less. It just is not possible. At the very least we need to reinstate the assault weapons ban.

Powerful statement and I’m in tears. My President weeps for those who will never play again and I can’t contain the flood of tears. These two statements stand out:
“They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.”

This was an apt and fitting statement. And gives me hope that something will change.

For those who missed the briefing, this is a little bit of what was said. I’m still in tears and I thank Pres. Obama for showing us this side of him once again. He’s a father first and he just reminded us that there are parents who are going to be heartbroken for the rest of their lives.
I just heard the president and the number of children killed is heartbreaking. I worked in schools for my professional career and we were greatly affected by Columbine. This is even worse. My heart is breaking and as so many of you the tears can’t stop.
I worked for 30 plus years in public mental health clinics, including coordinating crisis services and mental health commitment in a county in Oregon. I came across many individuals, most of them young adult males, who were deranged and needing immediate mental health attention, who were capable of committing murders like these. These young mentally ill men should not have access to military style assault weapons or any guns for that matter. Our Supreme Court, the GOP, and the NRA are responsible for these deaths.
bill, i too have worked in the mental health field. and i have seen the shortage of staff and resources limit the ability of the system to monitor or evaluate or make appropriate recommendations for the care of people who were in severe mental health crises. and there was little to care to offer: some pills that they might or might not take.
yes, we need to address our national relationship with guns, and severely limit access to guns. absolutely. and we also need to look at how we’ve stripped resources from the system that would intervene before deranged individuals could make and act on a deadly plan. thank you for bringing this issue into the discussion today.
The president reached out to us as human beings. If anyone complains that he should have been tougher in this speech, I’m going to tell them to go to hell. He said we have to do something about guns, regardless of the cost. Now is not the time to list what that something is. That’s our job and the job of every elected representative. The president is feeling this deeply. It’s a national tragedy of epic proportions. We would not be human if we didn’t take time to grieve and to comfort one another, no matter what the Michael Moore’s of this world say. The police at the press briefing said the official death toll is 20 children dead and 6 adults dead. (26 in total). 18 children were killed on the scene, 2 died in the hospital.
I was not home all day. I was out running errands and I listen to CD’s in my car and not the radio. I heard nothing of this horrible incident until I sat down here at the computer and my first stop (as always) was TOD. I have not seen the TV and I don’t think I can watch it. I did go to Twitter and then to YouTube and saw the same video of the President as the one above. I don’t have the words to express how I feel. People handle grief differently. For some strange reason I keep thinking how am I going to go to my Zumba class at 6:00. Then I think to myself “you’re insane – you’re thinking about Zumba? I’m sitting here and I don’t know what to do. Should I stay seated or get up. I must be in a shock. I can’t grasp this. I can’t understand it.
You are not alone, sabreen! I just cleared all meetings except the one I’m in. The rest of the day is going to be spent with family and with all of you.

The President’s statement with all his humanity before us, is on the mark. 32 years ago I lost my little boy. It is a grief that is a wound beyond belief, and at the time I thought beyond my capacity to bear. Bill, I truly share your grief and your understanding of what parents go through when they lose children. I lost my 16 year old daughter (first born) 20 years ago to cancer. To be honest, the pain of that loss has never gone away. I feel so deeply about the parents who lost their precious children today. Like the President, it’s so hard to fight the tears thinking about the horror inflicted on these precious children and their teachers, and the utter pain and despair their parents and loved ones must be going through.

But even though we’ve taken these actions, they’re not enough. Other steps to reduce violence have been met with opposition in Congress. This has been true for some time — particularly when it touches on the issues of guns. And I, like most Americans, believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms. And we recognize the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation -– that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage.
But I also believe that a lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals — (applause) — that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities. I believe the majority of gun owners would agree that we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons; that we should check someone’s criminal record before they can check out a gun seller; that a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily. (Applause.) These steps shouldn’t be controversial. They should be common sense.
So I’m going to continue to work with members of both parties, and with religious groups and with civic organizations, to arrive at a consensus around violence reduction — not just of gun violence, but violence at every level, on every step, looking at everything we can do to reduce violence and keep our children safe -– from improving mental health services for troubled youth — (applause) — to instituting more effective community policing strategies. On Thursday, one day before the tragedy in Connecticut where at least 29 people were killed at an elementary school, the Republican-controlled Michigan legislature passed a bill that would allow people to bring guns into schools.
Amidst a lameduck session that has spawned a host of right-wing legislation, including a so-called “right-to-work” law and an extreme abortion ban, a “sweeping rewrite of Michigan’s concealed handgun law” was also approved yesterday. The legislation changes Michigan’s gun laws in a number of ways, including making it easier for people to receive a gun permit and opening up “gun free zones,” including schools and elsewhere, to people carrying concealed firearms.

I just watched PBO’s statement and read about CTGirl. I can barely compose myself. If you are human, there are limits with this kind of senseless violence. I cannot fathom the terror those innocent children have suffered.
Whoa…people are gathering outside the white house. Some are expressing sympathy for the tragedy that occurred and some are holding signs saying: “It’s Time For Gun Control.”
1. I hope they gather in front of the halls of Congress. Since that’s where law is made.
2. I hope they do more than gather. The NRA is powerful, and has become more so since the assault weapon ban expired in 2004. The only thing which will destroy it as a force is if we collectively say “ENOUGH”, and make sure our representatives know that their jobs are on the line. Once my numbness is gone, letters are going out to my Senators, my Rep, and the two California Democratic House members who get donations from the NRA. And they will be getting them at regular intervals until old gun laws are enforced and new strictures are in place.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A tearful President Barack Obama said Friday he grieved first as a father about the massacre at a Connecticut elementary school, declaring, “Our hearts are broken today.” He called for “meaningful action” to prevent such shootings but did not say what it should be.
“The majority of those who died were children – beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old,” Obama said.
At that point he had to pause for several seconds to keep his composure, and he wiped his eyes.
The scene in the White House briefing room was one of the most emotional moments of Obama’s presidency. Near him, two senior aides cried and held hands as they listened to the president.
Some 27 people, including 20 children, were killed when a gunman opened fire inside the school. The shooter blasted his way through the building as young students cowered helplessly. The dead included the shooter.
The story jolted parents and other people across the nation, and the White House was no different.
Obama began his comments with no greeting. He ended them with words of Scripture, walking away in silence.
He recited the future milestones lost, and had to pause again to gather his words.
“They had their entire lives ahead of them – birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own,” the president said of those who were killed.
He ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on public grounds through Tuesday.
I was out today renewing my CPR card and doing my CPR skills making sure I know how to help people found unresponsive and pulseless and then I come and find out about this.
This is just so senseless and something that hopefully will allow discussion to proceed on how to improve mental health services, teach people how to detect mental health issues in a family member or friends and how to get them the help they need, and how to make it hard for people who are not stable mentally to have their hands on huge weapons and a bunch of ammunitions.

I am so grateful for our President, for the man and father that he is. He beautifully expressed what we all are feeling. As he said, the time is now for meaningful action to stop these killings. My heart is aching for all of those parents, for all of those kids…..they are our kids. May they somehow find peace in the days ahead. God bless them!

My heart is broken in a million pieces today…for the victims of this horrible massacre…sorry that’s what it was…for CTGirl, for Bill and for my friend who just yesterday found out from one of her students that her father was murdered. I’m just numb.
We were all excited at work today because one of my aides became a father for the first time this morning. I will tell him to hold that baby close and love him with all his might.
And no matter what anyone says, I love my President.

Easy. Do a recall just like you do cars. Pass a law limiting the number on guns each person/household can have legally. Set up an exchange for guns to be turned in. Forus, we can still hold legislators accountable for the endless stream of mindless legislation allowing guns in schools, bars,parks, etc. If people already have guns, lock them in your home; but don’t carry them anywhere you go. Every state and federal representative has to no that from now on we won’t tolerate anything that lessens restrictions on carrying guns.
Yeah, it’s just that with those types of laws those of us without weapons are treated like criminals with searches and security to keep the gun toters out. Our public spaces and other places of gathering are now like prisons. We are prisoners in our own country thanks to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction available faster than buying movie tickets.

So this is what got me crying.
I was driving home for lunch. I was thinking that this upcoming Tuesday was the last Storytime I’d be doing before my Xmas vacation. I was thinking about what to tell these wonderful kids, and the only things I could think about were “Stay safe” and “I love you all”. That pretty much made me lose it.

We had fun walking to the library, and the librarian was so wonderful with my students because they were so well behaved and she did not have to stop in the middle of her story time. Yet, if we are faithful to forge ahead and “if we do not give up”, (Gal.6:9) , someday we will know that the most exquisite work of our lives was done during those days when it was the darkest.
If we felel right now, that we can’t……..simply go FOWARD in faith, love and hope never doubting God. He is watching and He will bring goodness and beauty from all our pain and tears.

The school official made a damn effort to try and shield the kids who were evacuated out of the school from the massacre that had unfolded, reports are that they told kids to walk single file and close their eyes as they walk passed the massacre in the principal’s office.
I hope the image of those kids haunts those who interviewed them and put them on cameras.

She is a Democrat. Her husband was killed on the Long Island commuter train by a gunman in 1993. She ran for Congress, won, and is the most anti-gun person in Congress.
That is why I was shocked at the initial comments. The late Ted Kennedy was just as against gun violence for he and his family had lived it. She earned the right to speak.
Her intentions are good – she’s just going about it the wrong way. Apparently, her husband was a fatal victim of gun violence and her son severely injured in the same attack. She spoke to the Administration before the election, telling them that she was going to take up gun legislation after the election, and create a public campaign. She seems to want to lead a congressional charge for change – she just needs to know that the tough talk should be directed at her colleagues in Congress – not at the President, who would sign a sensible and effective gun control bill if one was presented to him. She could be an effective ally, but she needs to get her facts straight, and her strategy straight, too. The President is on her side.

So sad…this tragedy is an anathema to everything we hold dear. There aren’t enough words or prayers to help these children recover, to help the families who have lost their loved ones but pray we must and keep praying because they need all the help and support they can get. Loss of the future potential of these children is horrific. The president was superb in his words and emotion. My heart aches for the families.

This week had been an enjoyable one for me, up to the moment when my neighbour called me at work this afternoon and told me of this dreadful tragedy in the USA. I use the word ‘enjoyable’ because I had to attend all our elementary schools’ Christmas concert in my role as Education Officer responsible for curriculum and examinations. And at every event, the stars were the five to ten year olds. They were fearless and funny, and their exuberance at been in the spotlight was transmitted to us, the audience. We couldn’t help but respond with cheers, heart-felt laughter and love. These are the stars that will brighten our future existence. I was happy.
And then the news of the senseless slaughter of American innocence reached us, and everyone of us at the Ministry of Education became speechless and heartbroken. Eyes welled with unstoppable tears, for some have children as young as those killed in Connecticut. We all expressed our wishes of healing and comfort for the affected parents, relatives and the nation.
To the members of this virtual family, and to the entire US population, please know that we, here in Montserrat, are praying for you, that your tears will wash away your sorrow and that time will heal your hearts. Scripture states, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”. Scripture also says of our children, “Forbid them not to come unto me, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. Those little angels are back in the arms of their Creator. Yes, you are hurting, but again, scripture comforts us with these words, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning”.
I also extends words of comfort to CTGirl on the passing of her dad.

I thought Aurora was the apex of evil, but this is so much worse. Memories embed themselves in children’s brains; the younger they are (above toddler age), the more they are permanent.

I am very new to this community but it seems to many people part of this community and loved ones have left earth way to soon, especially those innocent people in Newton. Quite frankily, I have been trying to come up with some kind of summation to make sense of these things, post info as it comes in and well….. I dont know seems pointless. The only silver lining I can think of is we are fortunate enough to have our own sort of *therapy* group to get things of our chest even if it comes with the anonymity of behind a computer screen. So I thank you all for that.

I also said on Facebook that if EVERY person who is so sad and angry would make calls CHANGE would occur. I reminded them that it is WE the PEOPLE and up to us to push this movement.

CTGirl…I am so sorry for your and especially your friends loss. As a mother…I lost my breath just missing my son under the cloths rack in a store while shopping. I cannot even imagine what it would be to lose a child. We as parents are suppose to go first.
This happened to my school a few years ago. We had a code Red Lock down. That is lock your students in the closet in your classrooms with all lights off. We had to make sure our classroom doors were lock, lights off, children in the closet with lights out and door locked.
Yes. we had a gunman on campus. Seems there was an armed robbery down the street…four gunman involved and one wound up on our campus. I was walking with one of the students I mentored. WE saw the gunman at the LOCKED door through the window at the side of the building. Four long hours later we were allowed out.
What a frightening experience! Thank heavens that you were safe out of that incident, and sad that every time this happens, you have to remember what happened to you.
I kind of wish the media wasn’t publicizing the “kids in the closet” plan, because these criminals don’t need a map of where the kids will be in the case of another emergency like this.

I thought the shooter’s mother was a kindergarten teacher and killed in the classroom The shooter’s mother was shot in the face at home and was never a teacher, may have volunteered at the school some time in the past. I thought the killer killed his father in Hoboken, N.J.—-father is alive and being interviewed by police, same with the brother, who works for Ernst and Young, both not expected to have any role in the horror today. I thought the brother was the “2nd suspect” which was shown being taken down by the police outside the school. I don’t know who that was. And a relative said the shooter was obviously mentally ill. Yes, obviously. Why didn’t the family make sure he was getting the mental health help he needed, hospitalized even since he was very ill. I always wonder about the family role in these kind of cases. There are always signs that these mass killers are seriously ill before they commit these horrendous acts—–like the perpetrator in the Gabby Giffords case. He was obviously horribly obviously mentally ill to one and all and no one, his family primarily, made sure he was being treated so he could do no harm to others. Families have an obligation to get mental health help for their family members, just as they would for any kind of health problem. The people who act out in these horrific, tragic ways do not just wake up one day as a monster. The signs have been there for years.
May I suggest you’re being somewhat harsh without knowing the facts? This was a 20 year old which in this country means he was a free adult. Mental illness is like so many other illnesses, you cannot help someone who does not help themselves, and unless you can prove they are an imminent danger to society you cannot lock them up, force them to take meds, etc. Moreover, as a society we have cut mental health treatment and services for the last 20 years. Is it any wonder we have so many people who need help that are not getting treatment? We need to answer for these tragedies as a society. As Joey B says, our budgets reflect our priorities and mental health services have fallen way down the list.

I remember Reagan cutting funding for mental institutions. The fact is many violent criminals in prisons are mentally challenged. They are locked away in prisons because there are not enough mental facilities to house and treat them. Also, lets be real. It’s harder for black and brown young men to get help. Many in jails are also illiterate. The country has a problem. We have over 1 million people in prison. Of course, the Repubs love the fact that so much money can be made off locking up people in private prisons.
Sometimes families don’t know what to do. They either don’t know what questions to ask or don’t trust doctors. Sometimes they can’t even afford the help.
This has to STOP. GUN CONTROL NOW. I just heard about this, walked in turned on the TV and just cried.

In the coming days a name and shame campaign of congress members in the pocket of the NRA would go a long way towards educating and informing the general public. I am convinced that once in possession of the facts American people everywhere will demand action. Perhaps Bloomberg and some rich pals can fund a PSA series of ads around the country? That would be a good start if he were serious about addressing the problem and counteracting the NRA propaganda that has been allowed to flourish unchecked. I am certain that PBO will move on gun control.
I live in a country with a population less than 10% than that of the US – but we implemented gun control after a massacre that killed (from memory) 36 people. The Washington Post had an article about it back in August. It would be difficult to do in the US – but surely not impossible if congress worked as a unit (is that even possible at the minute) and everyone works towards that goal.
Perhaps when it seems impossible – it is the time to be active. When a country has the death of its own children to consider – perhaps there can be some hope – It was the parent who lost his children in the Port Arthur tragedy who fought with his heart & soul to get the weapons out of Australian homes.

Unfortunately congress (house of representatives) works as little as possible and if PBO wants it, then it won’t happen. They barely get things done that they agree should get done.
