Air Force One has landed at Bradley Airport in Hartford, Conn.; President will speak at a vigil in Newtown later tonight – @nbcnightlynews— Breaking News (@BreakingNews) December 16, 2012
Been sitting here trying to get back to grading essays (on ethics of all things!) Yesterday we had a Pinning Ceremony for our new nursing graduates. So hard to balance such moments of joy and pride with the reality that is going on around us. I’m so glad that at yesterday’s ceremony someone said what I feel – that this is a public health issue. It’s a safety issue, it’s a mental health issue, it’s a health disparity issue.
As a nurse and educator I tell my students that it is their responsibility to care for not only the individual, but the community. I feel we have to do something with the trust that is placed in us (#1 yet again in terms of most trusted professions), the fact that we often are the ones with the stories that come from being there when people need comfort. So, we need to speak up, and we need to lead. I know I will do what I can. I am sorry we have no classes until after the January break. While I always exhort my students to pick up the mantle of leadership, I feel like this is a place where focus can be placed.
President Obama called a 90-year-old menorah saved from a Long Island temple ravaged by Hurricane Sandy a “symbol of perseverance” at the White House Hanukkah ceremony on Thursday.
The president said the menorah stood as one of the “powerful symbols of [the Hanukkah] spirit” in brief remarks before around 600 guests. The lamp, crafted of solid brass, was saved from the Temple Israel of Long Beach. The house of worship was badly damaged as the hurricane battered the New York coast.
“I’m willing to bet it will survive another 90 years, and another 90 years after that,” the president said. “Tonight it serves as another symbol of perseverance.”
We would form a human shield around him and all the innocents if we could today and every day. We will not rest until things change for the better in this country.
Does anyone remember a nationwide Hands Across America event a few decades ago? People literally went in certain streets and assigned routes and joined hands, in every state. I’m embarrassed to say I can’t remember the reason, but it felt very good to be doing that, as an American. We might want to do something like that again, not just to protest lack of constraints but to come together against “gun terror.”
Ah, the procrastination monster has set in…I was thinking about how one of the things we can/do do about gun violence is safety screening. Then I remembered hearing about legislation that was attacking it, and found this:
In the Affordable Care Act, the gun lobby’s section is in Title X, starting on page 2,037, line 23. “Protection of Second Amendment Gun Rights” contains five provisions mostly dedicated to shutting down conversation about guns in medicine. What do these sections contain?
Wellness and prevention programs may not require the disclosure or collection of information relating to the presence or storage of a lawfully possessed firearm or the use of a firearm. At least the law didn’t say we couldn’t ask about it, we just have to do it clandestinely.
The next provision states we can’t collect data related to owning or using firearms. So we can’t write it down? Sounds like an effective way to stifle research related to gun violence so we can no longer prove that easier access to guns increases the risk of mass violence.
Provision three states we can’t use or maintain records of individual ownership or possession of firearms or ammunition. I’m fine with that not being allowed in medicine, but that information should be tracked somewhere. A person amassing an arsenal should raise an eyebrow.
Provision four limits the ability to determine rates or eligibility for health insurance based on gun ownership. Now why is that even in there? Title I of the ACA states that insurance will be guaranteed issue so no one can be turned down. Even if they own enough guns to hunt every squirrel in the United States, they will qualify for health insurance. Just so the gun owners have the correct information, rates are based on only four factors – age, location, number of family members, and smoking status. Wait – guns smoke, so maybe they thought that was meant for gun owners.
THIS is what we are fighting — the insidious push back by the gun lobby against every sane action attempted. As so many have stated, the only way change will happen on this front is from massive push-back by all of We the People.
Some ugly gun lobbyists wormed their way into congressional offices and made some congressman insert this language as a condition of support for the bill. These people are like termites who eat away at the structure of your home. The need to be rooted out.
I see President Obama will only be speaking for about 12 minutes tonight. There really are no adequate words under these most horrific of circumstances, but I know he will try his best. He has always been able to provide reassuring and comforting thoughts after past tragedies, but this will be the toughest task of all.
What on earth is going on in this country? A murder/suicide pact among high school kids who haven’t begun to live their lives. Has insanity become contagious?
I know that we here will surround the President and the families in Newtown with our prayers and strength. His grace and compassion never cease to amaze me. I pray daily for his strength, as I know millions of others do. That thought comforts me every day. In my long lifetime, I have not seen another president who takes this job as seriously as he does, nor have I seen one who works as hard and constantly as he does.
Yes, and I so want him to have the time to just rest in his home state and enjoy his family. He’s worked so hard for us. He’s a human being and he needs to just stop and restore his well being like all of the rest of us.
Rachel Maddow is willing to challenge the conventional Washington wisdom that absolutely nothing can be done to stop gun massacres in America because of the power of the NRA.
What if we banned 30-bullet assault weapon magazines that are never used for hunting or self-defense, but only for massacres? Isn’t that something all Americans would support – even rightwing Republican politicians?
My heart breaks for those we lost and our President:-( He’s been mourning since his Inauguration..I never forget the night of 2008..I sensed that He was still mourning Toots? his Grandmother passing..while he had an enormous task in front of him..My God bless him …
~Peace
I agree with you, kasai. He was never really given time to grieve for his own loss – he launched right into protecting the country from another depression (even before he was inaugurated), and he hasn’t stopped dealing with crisis after crisis. It ends up finding its own way out.
RT @sivavaid: Public school teachers will lay their bodies over your children to protect them. Are you sure you want to cut their pay &a …— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) December 16, 2012
Here are the photos of the victims, sweet faces all. The parents of the little girl in the first photo, Jessica Rekos, wrote that they could not imagine life without her. I know all the other parents feel the same—-it’s unimaginable.
People are trying to do everything they can think of to help, to combat the feeling of helplessness in the face of all that grief. I read a story at the DesMoines Register that a famous pie lady from Iowa was on her way to Ct. with all her pie making ingredients, hoping to provide some comfort pies and help in that way. People feel like they have to do something!
Dotster, I honestly think we can help by reaching out to our neighbors and friends with school age children. I talked to a few neighbors today who are terrified about sending their kids back to school tomorrow. They don’t know what to do, how to protect them. We need to start our dialogues here. First, how to handle these fears at our local schools. Then what are we going to demand of our elected officials–at the town level, the county level, the state level and in the Congress. All great movements start at the ground level. This tragedy has hit people hard and in a place they feel most vulnerable–their children. I’m wondering if we shouldn’t promote neighborhood or town wide support groups where parents can share their concerns and coordinate their calls for action. We can all help make this happen.
I agree support is needed. I imagine parents everywhere will have qualms sending their kids off to school next week. I have family in Ct. —-2 young grandchildren in school about an hour away from Sandy Hook. Everyone in their town got an automated call on Fri. that there will be a police presence at their schools and functions for the time being, to give “reassurance” to anxious parents. I imagine they got 100′s of calls. I don’t think a police presence is the answer, but they responded in the best way they could think of at the moment.
But you have good ideas. I will need to talk to neighbors here in Illinois with school age children to see how they feel.
Here in GA, our school safety program includes campus police for our larger high schools and what are known as compliance officers for the smaller ones. The high school from which I retired in 2009 had a county law enforcement officer (compliance officer) on campus everyday. I’m not sure whether our elementary schools here have compliance officers or not because I don’t know any elementary school teachers. Our compliance officer had his own office on campus, and his main, and only, job was ensuring that students and everyone on campus was safe. I mentioned this because it might reduce parents’ and grandparents’ fears to have some law enforcement officers on elementary and high school campuses nationwide. I can understand how/why you and other grandparents across the nation are worried about your grandkids because I’m a parent and will become a grandparent next year. I’ve been thinking about all of our kids since this happened, and I worry about them, too.

This is what one of my nephews said in response to a post of mine on FB. I’m not sure whether to bother trying to have a conversation or not. How do they picture this? Does the principal walk around with an automatic weapon slung on her shoulder? If not, she’s not going to be able to run and get it without getting killed. And where does she get it from? Her desk, the shelf, the closet? Is it just lying around handy in case someone suffering from mental illness and able to buy any gun he wants shows up? Most people, if suddenly confronted with a mad man with a semi-automatic weapon, would never be able to get a gun, aim right at the guy, and shoot it to subdue. What strange, macho dream world are they living in? Do we include combat training in the curriculum of teachers colleges? Make sure we have kindergarten teachers prepared to shoot to kill? Does she keep the gun in a handy cubby? Do these people really want to live in a world where everyone is armed? My nephew is in Afghanistan, God love him — does he want every Afghani he meets to have a concealed way to kill him? I bet not.
BetseyC, You nephew, young as he may be, has great deal of common sense. Unfortunately, that’s what’s totally lacking–common sense — from the people who want to arm teachers and other school officials.
My comment got separated from Meta’s original post when I brought it to the new thread, so it seems like he was saying what followed. But he, sadly, is on the side of arming all civilians. I’m still wondering if it’s worth it to engage the conversation.
Sorry for misreading it. In that case, your nephew really needs some wisdom from you. We all have family members who are brainwashed. We must never stop engaging them in conversations. May be someday we can enlighten them about the truth. I wonder, if he thinks all civilians should be armed, then why should our tax dollars go to pay for all the branches of the military, the police, the sheriffs, U.S. marshals, F.B.I., Boarder Agents, ATF and all other law enforcement authorities?
My husband and I are just talking about the absolutely HORRIBLE hand President Obama was dealt! The absolute mess GWB left the country in. The chickens are coming home to roost, and it is President Obama’s job to clean up the mess. GWB escaped to Dallas behind his guarded fences, with never a thought or care for what is happening now. He is totally disengaged, which, actually I think he was for eight years. What a despicable legacy he left.
I shudder to think where we would be if Mcgrumpy had been elected, or the downward spiral we would be set on if Robney had been elected. Sometimes I think the only thing holding us together is the strong will of President Obama. But…..maybe the American people are beginning to catch on.
It was so encouraging to read about people voluntarily turning in their guns in California…..and hopefully, what starts in California will spread to the rest of the country. Once again I must say how thankful I am for this place and the good souls here.
This is so true, Carolyn. He also was left with 50% of the country having been thoroughly brainwashed to bypass their own needs (and those of their children) in order to subsidize billionaires and millionaires in the vague hope that some miracle (or lucky lottery winning) will catapult them into the top 2%. I just stepped back from trying to talk to right wingers on twitter, and realizing that it’s futile. I can only hope that some of those who see this tragedy, and their eyes are opened. Some of them will realize that they have voted for GOP who have demonized teachers, the same teachers who laid down their lives or protected these tiny children. They have voted for GOP who have been slaves to the NRA and the likes of Grover Norquist. It’s a bad deck dealt to this President, but there’s really nobody else who probably could be handling it as well as President Obama. We’re lucky he stepped up to serve when he did.
This song has been one of my faves since I was a little kid. I found is especially comforting after 9/11, and again now. Sorry I don’t know how to embed vids, but here’s the link.
MY DEAR TALLY…I JUST PUT THIS LOVELY PIECE OF NRA INFO. ON MY FACEBOOK WHERE SEVERAL IN MY COMMUNITY BRUSH THEIR TEETH W/ THEIR WEAPONS…HOPE THEY ENJOY IT!…:)
I was going to retweet this but I linked to the link and it’s part of Focus on The Family. I will have nothing to do with them. They are a hate filled group. My brother use to work for them.
DESPITE THE TRASH BEING HANDED OUT BY THOSE BEHIND THE NRA…AND OTHERS…WE DESPERATELY NEED TO BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS. THE ONLY REASON THOSE ARE USED IS TO KILL AS MANY AS POSSIBLE. OTHER THAN MILITARY OR LAW ENFORCEMENT…THERE IS NO NEED FOR THOSE WEAPONS OF TERROR TO BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. LANZA DEFINITELY USED THE BUSH WEAPON TO STRIKE BY THE NUMBERS…THIS HAS TO STOP!
Keep learning new details——that a teacher pressed her body against the door to try to keep shooter out of her classroom and was shot twice——-that another teacher got her kids out of school through a window——that a kindergarten teacher tried to calm her kids when they heard the gunshots by saying it was probably a custodian retrieving a soccer ball on the roof. Also reminded there are 2 wounded who survived, haven’t heard about them yet.
This horror, experienced by all these teachers and all those little kids, can never happen again——–or anything similar—–anywhere. There has to be some positive outcome—–new sensible gun regulations have to result. As someone said, we have an obligation to 20 1st graders.
Yes, she thought they were all going to die. She said she wanted the last thing they heard to be someone telling them they love them. That was the most courageous, selfless, loving thing I have heard…
I would add that we have an obligation to those parents and adults who are more brave than anyone of our congressmen/women who would rather protect NRA profits over children’s lives.
((((((((((((((( Thank you, DF for all that you do for the children and parents))))))))))))))) I pray you will hold up through this long journey that we all will be addressing later on this issue. Let us pray hard to get all of the wonderful teachers, their families, the administration and school boards in CT., and especially at Sandy Hook.
Thank you DF! Hugs to you thru all this. I have a cousin who lives close to all of this. She has grandchildren in school not far from here it all is to close to all of us.
I don’t know if I can watch PBO do the memorial. I know he will ease the pain a little but it would hurt far more to watch him have to do this, knowing that tho he may have a spine of steel, he still is a man with a sensitive spirit especially where kids are concerned.
My prayer is that God, by His grace and mercy, will give you all (especially President Obama, and the family and friends of the departed)the strength to cope with this horrendous loss.
In case people aren’t reading all the posts here, my link on # 105 let’s you write something personal to the families. I did this already…it’s cathartic

Thanks Chipsticks for all you do here. My prayers are with the President, his family and all the American people at this difficult time.
Privatization of Heath care in Spain. The World has officially lost it’s collective minds.
Justin Sink:
Well stated, Judith.

JER thanks for the link; chips thanks for the forum!
blessed afternoon all. so much on our president’s shoulders… wishing him continued strength and Divine Guidance.
The final provision related to gun owners is that individuals do not have to disclose they own a gun. We know you can’t make people tell the truth, but fortunately most people in the throes of mental anguish and considering violence will tell the truth when asked.http://www.forbes.com/sites/carolynmcclanahan/2012/07/23/gun-owner-rights-and-obamacare-yes-it-is-in-the-law/
They are parasites like Grover Norquist. So are the butt-holes on the Supreme Court that passed Citizens United. “Waller fer a doller!”
I see President Obama will only be speaking for about 12 minutes tonight. There really are no adequate words under these most horrific of circumstances, but I know he will try his best. He has always been able to provide reassuring and comforting thoughts after past tragedies, but this will be the toughest task of all.
Serious …
@FBI
Well said Carolyn, I agree completely. We love and support him 100%, and our prayers are with him and those families today.
Yes, and I so want him to have the time to just rest in his home state and enjoy his family. He’s worked so hard for us. He’s a human being and he needs to just stop and restore his well being like all of the rest of us.
Prayers for the survivors of all the victims in this horrific tragedy. Prayers for the president, as he shoulders the sadness of the country.
VIDEO: Rachel Maddow Urges Ban on Massacre Clips
January 12, 2011
————————

When VP Biden says: He has courage of steel…is a testament of his actions day in and day out…We are so blessed to have him as our Leader.
The whole world is blessed.

Good afternoon Chips and TOD family!!! I am so thankful for this place! We can come here in all situations and now that we are not alone. Hugs to all!
I heartily agree! I’m so glad I found my way here. It is a true blessing.

Tomorrow we need to have 2 primary goals, press for tax breaks for middle class families and DEMAND gun control laws.
Ironically the same folks who oppose raising taxes on the wealthy also support the NRA, go figure.
- GROVER NORQUIST holds the GOP hostage demanding strict adherence to the ‘no tax pledge’ or risk primary challenge.
- NRA holds GOP hostage by keeping track of their votes on gun regulations using scorecards and ratings.
- BIG OIL doesn’t have to worry about losing their corporate welfare because the GOP will block every attempt to end the unnecessary tax breaks.

That’s what Gohlmert just said, he wishes the Principal had an Assaukt rifle to fight back.
Lovely!
The right wingers are insane. When the police arrive on a scene with multiple people holding guns, how are they supposed to neutralize the threat?
WH official says that President Obama is the primary author of his speech at the vigil tonight.
He always seems to write the most moving ones, the ones with the most important messages.
I’ve never heard this song before – lovely.
MY DEAR TALLY…I JUST PUT THIS LOVELY PIECE OF NRA INFO. ON MY FACEBOOK WHERE SEVERAL IN MY COMMUNITY BRUSH THEIR TEETH W/ THEIR WEAPONS…HOPE THEY ENJOY IT!…:)
BRAVA!!
Thank you, Sue.
In addition to being televised by the major networks, PBO’s speech will be livestreamed from the following sites (and probably CNN and CBS)
http://www.whitehouse.gov/live
http://www.c-span.org/Live-Video/C-SPAN/
As someone said, we have an obligation to 20 1st graders.
http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/national-international/NATL-With-the-Names-Pain-and-Questioning-183672831.html
Yes. And one teacher hiding told her kids that she loved them because that was what she wanted them to hear. Not gunshots.
Yes, she thought they were all going to die. She said she wanted the last thing they heard to be someone telling them they love them. That was the most courageous, selfless, loving thing I have heard…
And the GOP try to demonize these people.
I cry all over again every time I read that. People try and demonize us all the time….wonder if they’ll rethink that now?
{{{{{DF}}}}} there are no words
I would add that we have an obligation to those parents and adults who are more brave than anyone of our congressmen/women who would rather protect NRA profits over children’s lives.

Thank you DF! Hugs to you thru all this. I have a cousin who lives close to all of this. She has grandchildren in school not far from here it all is to close to all of us.
Too sad…
I don’t know if I can watch PBO do the memorial. I know he will ease the pain a little but it would hurt far more to watch him have to do this, knowing that tho he may have a spine of steel, he still is a man with a sensitive spirit especially where kids are concerned.
I know – I’m torn, too.
CNN reports that the entire vigil is supposed to last about 2 hours tonight, lots of speakers in addition to President Obama.
