I’m really wondering if the Obama family will get to Hawaii for the holidays. I can see the GOP dragging this out past Christmas just to be bratty toddlers and it would hurt my soul if PBO was seperated from his ladies on Christmas after a grueling campaign. He deserves a break. He has earned it and should be flying off to Hawaii with his family the second after the girls are released from school.

Since they lost the “1 term President” it seems the GOP has now reduced itself to ensuring Christmas holidays are banned for the next 4 years – what a sad and sorry disaster they are.

Meanwhile the share markets world wide continue upwards – they trust President Obama.

That’s funny, Don. It is kind of funny that after so many years of people waiting to see if the Mayan prediction was true, that the night before the ‘end of the world’, the focus would be on Boehner and this fantasy cliff… I guess that dry-run with that huckster from a couple of years ago calmed everyone down over these end of days prophecies.

You are so right LL….from the 2010 deal to the 2011 deal we prag progs have always seen the long view and understood what Pres Obama was doing. We’ve been more right than wrong about him, yet the PL always get the microphone and they are wrong every time, plus they never admit it! Randi Rhodes was one of the few radio hosts who understood the 2011 deal and how it gave Pres Obama leverage if he won reelection. Why she is not on TV I don’t know…it’s a shame because her analysis is usually spot on. Much better than Chris Matthews or Ed Shultz….

Basically the PL doesn’t trust Pres Obama, which make it easier for them to see the worst and never give him credit for the success — they say he’s lucky…smh They talk about the RWers being sheep but it’s so amazing how they so easily believe everything from their loudest chicken little fellow traveler…

These guys bring back the haunting memories of Thaddeus Stevens and the Radical Republicans after the Civil War, during reconstruction. These people are Radical Republicans. So the Republicans won’t “work” again until after Christmas. They will all go home and brag that they didn’t raise taxes…..they are incredible.

    • 134 nathkatun7
      December 20, 2012 at 11:13 pm

I totally resent the comparison! Without Thaddeus Stevens, we would not have enacted the Thirteenth Amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1866, the 14th and the 15th Amendments; as well as the Reconstruction Act of 1867, which for the first time allowed African Americans in the South to vote and run for office. As an African American, I consider Thaddeus Stevens and Charles Sumner to be two of the most anti racist white members of Congress in history. Stevens was progressives and not regressive. He dedicated his political life, and personal life, fighting for equality of all Americans. Why, he even left a “will” saying that he wished to be buried in “a colored cemetery” to symbolize his commitment to human equality. So, comparing Thaddeus Stevens to these regressive teabag morons is a great disservice to the history of the struggle for human equality in this country.

  43. December 20, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Short of votes, House Republicans pulled Speaker John Boehner’s “Plan B” tax bill from the floor late Thursday, testing the Speaker’s hold on his conference and throwing year-end efforts to prevent the fiscal cliff into further chaos.

Party leaders had voiced confidence throughout the day they had enough Republican votes to pass the measure over unified Democratic opposition, but amid mounting defections they announced shortly before 8 p.m. that a vote would be put off.

After a closed-door conference meeting, the Speaker said it was now up to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and President Obama to find a way to avert tax hikes and spending cuts set to be triggered in January that economist want could start a recession. He told The Hill that the House would come back “when needed.”

    http://thehill.com/homenews/house/274187-house-gop-pulls-plan-b

It’s now up to the President to avoid the fiscal cliff?????? WTF?

    • 136 Theo67
      December 20, 2012 at 11:43 pm

Don’t forget-the fiscal cliff only came about because Republicans decided to refuse to work with Presisent Obama last year, and said they could solve the debt crisis themselves. They are the ones who wasted VP Biden’s time in negotiations last year, then wasted President Obama’s time, then went back to VP Biden when they started losing the negotiations and finally said they could solve it themselves, and would put a sequester in place to force them to act. And here we are…

The President made Grover Norquist break his own tax pledge that dates back to when he was a 12-year-old. The only politician, from either party, to ever successfully do so.

John Boehner loudly claimed to have a Plan B that would shame the President as the biggest tax raiser in American history, but in turns out he doesn’t have enough votes to pass his own Plan B.

Meanwhile the President has given up nothing. Not a single, solitary, thing.

There was nothing but embarrassment for Speaker John Boehner and House Republicans tonight, as they were forced to pull the vote on Boehner’s “Plan B” tax bill at the last minute because, as Boehner said, they didn’t have the votes to pass it. The Speaker sent the House home for through Christmas, with the option of recalling them afterwards if there’s anything for them to do.

For tonight, it’s a debacle, and they look foolish. But I’d caution against reading too much into this episode. It’s not at all clear it changes anything moving forward.

  76. December 20, 2012 at 9:35 pm

In the wake of House GOP leadership pulling their “Plan B” bill from the House floor, White House press Secretary Jay Carney said that President Obama remains “hopeful” that a deal still can be reached.

“The president’s main priority is to ensure that taxes don’t go up on 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses in just a few short days. The president will work with Congress to get this done and we are hopeful that we will be able to find a bipartisan solution quickly that protects the middle class and our economy,” Carney said in a Thursday statement.

Doesn’t sound to me like PBO got on a plane . . . . . . I tell you, if ever I was interested in seeing an example

Absolutely, Anniebella, ABSOLUTELY. Treason comes to mind, but the true definition is a bit too strong, though not by much,

So… I’ll go with sedition. The archaic definition is actually spot on.

        se·di·tion (noun)

        1. incitement of discontent or rebellion against a government.
        2. any action, especially in speech or writing, promoting such discontent or rebellion.

I’m watching the share market in my world – it has dropped over 1% in an hour and still heading down – great Christmas for those whose pensions are invested in the markets. It just keeps happening for reasons beyond stupid.

Apparently they all vote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speaker_of_the_United_States_House_of_Representatives but

“It is expected that members of the House vote for their party’s candidate. If they do not do so, they usually vote for someone else in their party or vote “present”. Those who vote for the other party’s candidate often face serious consequences, up to and including the loss of seniority. The last major instance where a representative voted for the other party’s candidate was in 2000, when Democrat Jim Traficant of Ohio voted for Republican Dennis Hastert. In response, the Democrats stripped him of his seniority and he lost all of his committee posts.”

          • December 21, 2012 at 1:26 am

            Yes.

But, to take the step of voting for Leader Pelosi, any R doing that would know that their future in the House would be of no value to their constituents if they remained an R. If they took an Independent status or Dem status then they’d have leverage. If 17 of them were truly interested in doing their best service to their constituents and the Nation, they’d switch to Dem under a variety of conditions such as Committee positions, support from the DCCC (including no support for anyone who’d primary them in 2014), etc.

My hope is that at least 17 of the 113th Congress Rs are savvy enough to know how strong their position would be if they joined with Ds and elected Leader Pelosi Speaker.

      • 257 majiir
        December 20, 2012 at 10:53 pm

I was thinking something similar, Esi. It would seem that the republicans would have stopped trying to hurt PBO politically or otherwise by now because everything thing they’ve done has backfired on them. Only insanity would cause them to keep doing crazy stuff and keep having it backfire on them. I knew when Cantor and Boehner were saying earlier today that they had the votes to pass Plan B, that they were lying. Plan B was a political stunt intended to the president look bad. The republicans have seen the bad polls on them, and their desperation compelled them to try to pass Plan B in a last ditch effort to portray themselves in a positive light. It didn’t work, and Boehner is somewhere right now drowning his disappointment in a couple of stiff drinks.

      • December 20, 2012 at 10:56 pm

buzzfeed has some fun details.check the last paragraph–boehner can’t control the rethugs because there’s no candy to give them:

‘ Just minutes into the meeting, the door burst open and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, surrounded by a wall of aides, hurried out. He did not comment to reporters before he walked into an office and closed the door.

After Cantor left the meeting, Rep. Mike Kelly yelled loudly at his colleagues, attempting to rally them around Boehner. But according to Republicans in the room, the outcome was already clear. Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy just shook his head, telling the room the votes simply weren’t there.

A short time later, Boehner exited an elevator onto the first floor of the Capitol.

When asked about the meeting by Buzzfeed, Boehner said simply “It went well.”

If he thought that, he was the only one.
    ~
One source explained that while members appeared sympathetic to Boehner’s efforts, they were adamant that they wouldn’t go along with the Kabuki theater the plan entailed — passing a measure that Obama would reject; sending it to the Senate to reduce the income levels of tax increases from $1 million to something closer to $500,000 or $600,000 a year; and then re-passing the bill in the House, this time with Democratic support.

The source said that a number of lawmakers told Boehner bluntly: “If this was the final deal, I’d be there for you. But the Senate’s not going to pass it.”

When asked what the next step was in the talks, a leadership aide would only say “it’s unclear.”
    ~
Boehner’s leadership team, in particular Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, has also found itself hamstrung by the lack of earmarks. Traditionally the carrot used to bring along members to take tough votes, their absence has made the process of whipping the conference exponentially more difficult.’

I just watched the video of Cantor as he was leaving the meeting after the vote was tabled. People are labeling it the “walk of shame”, but from the smirk on Cantor’s face, I don’t think he is “shamed” at all. I think Cantor’s perfectly happy with the knife he put in Boehner’s back. He literally looks like the cat that ate the canary.

Seriously look at the video and tell me that Cantor looks doesn’t look like a cat who sees a bowl of cream right within this reach.

Brutus also comes to mind – except that Boehner is no Caesar. Cantor is delighted at the downfall of Boehner – doesn’t yet realize that he is headed the same way.

What is impossible to understand – these people are supposedly Christians – they are approaching the supposedly happiest time of the Christian calendar and all they can do is “make the people suffer”. They are wicked – they have no idea of the suffering they cause (or perhaps they do – hence the evil smiles).

Before getting a bit of rest ….

Between now and 3 Jan 2013 if millions of PBO supporters would focus on those two objectives we could dramatically transform the next two years.

Democrats winning margin for the House was more than 1 million votes and the only reason we don’t control the House in the 113th Congress is because of gerrymandering. So, for all those in Congressional Districts with an R headed to the 113th House of Representatives it is essential for the DCCC and DNC to provide them with a list of the 17+ Rs that are more likely to flip – either to D or to Independent but committed to caucus with Ds.

The majority of Americans have now seen a display of such incompetence by Boehner, and recklessness by the Tea Party that it’s likely we would see significant support for those R’s willing to do the People’s business by supporting Pelosi for Speaker and working with Dems to restore the middle class.

LET’S JUST SAY IT, REPUBLICANS ARE THE PROBLEM

That was the most remarkable demonstration of the unhinged and deranged GOP that I have seen in a long time. I am still reeling from that interview. It showed better than anything why the Republican Party has made our government dysfunctional. That interview needs to be seen by all Americans. I hope it goes viral. It showed clearly why we can’t get anything done with their rigid ideology.

And remember Joe said he had asked several Republicans to come on the show to discuss GUNS and they said they could not say anything until the NRA had their press conference. Imagine that. And don’t forget they had to get approval from GROVER NORQUIST on the bogus plan b. Why are these people in government when all they do is surrender their judgment to other people.

Then again, Joe isn’t giving any of his tax dollars to those poor folks – why should he pay taxes – some folks never change

I happened to be flipping channels and I stumbled on Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) losing his shit on Morning Joe regarding the economy and assault weapons. I’m going to post the clip when it’s uploaded and everyone has got to watch it to realize the craziness Pres. Obama is dealing with. The dude basically wished the economy to go to hell in a hand basket as long as millionaires wouldn’t see a tax increase and he likened assault weapons to playthings. You have to watch the clip to fully understand the craziness. The outright horror of what he was saying. Children died in Newtown and he was acting as though it was a joke. This is what Boehner and Pres. Obama have to deal with. These animals aren’t human. It was insane! Twitter is blowing up like mad and people who don’t normally tune into politics but noticed Twitter blowing up, tuned into Morning Joe and couldn’t believe that Huelskamp is what passes for a republican these days. Keeeerist!

He also insulted Joe most mightily, but Joe couldn’t touch him. The guy was so entrenched in his ideology, he even went after Joe politicizing Newtown. Joe nearly blew a gasket. He left the entire round table of Republicans sitting there with their mouths open. Right after they went to break, but before the mikes were cut, you could hear them say, Wow, Oh boy, and other utterances of disbelief. Later, Joe got a text from a former Bush adviser who said he was so angry he was shaking. He said Joe should have these nuts on everyday so the sane Repubs could see where their party was going. It was classic, but not surprising. This guy was on Washington Journal yesterday and today Washington Journal has his nutty buddy on spewing the same garbage. Mad cause they were kicked off the committees for being insane.

Joe had it coming. I watch most of that video and when the interview began both Joe and Mika were slobbering all of this guy. ‘A real conservative’ , ‘you would be by my side making these decisions’ , ‘this is guy I would go to’. They were just showering him with praise. Now they act all shocked, like they’ve never knew the GOP could be like this? That a “real conservative” would have these beliefs”. PFFFFTTT!!

Please Get that video out there, we have to get rid of these Guys. They are Traitors!

First time I’ve heard Joe attacking his party – “They can’t see around the corner – with guns – with the economy – with contraception”

And yet he is still saying “The President has to be the grownup” – What is with the GOP – why are they are the children? Self implosion

He attacks them when it is politically expedient for him. He does not have much to say about the party on their overall policy. He only wants them to dress the message up to be more palatable, not to make significant change. Joe is all about Joe and right now he’s shaken because he sees the dead end path his party is taking. He only wants them to take a different path, not change the destination.

I didn’t say hellllllllooooo O’s yet, so Up and At ‘em you TODdies!!!!! There’s a dusting of snow on the lawn on this great getting up day. It’s less than expected, which is fine by me, though I admit to the beauty of the first snowfall.

So on the day we honor the victims of Newtown with a moment of silence, the silent NRA decides to break theirs. This had better be a phenomenal statement they give today. It took them a whole week to draft it.
