I love my President.
Me too. CEB’s last comment should be reposted here!
Why not let the Bush tax cuts expire at midnight? 5 mins. after midnight, the U.S.Government can be printing/sending out unemployment checks. Can this be a possible solution?
I too love my President.

@Normsmusic @Mozi_N That would require a Congress that doesn't suckle from the ample teets of those you just mentioned.— Dudette (@Dudette9t9) December 30, 2012
That would be messing with the ‘Good Ole Boys’ retirement plans. We can’t have that. Can we? :-(
We’re gonna need some serious arm-twisting to get campaign finance reform, then we ca get work done to solve the country’s problems in a timely manner.
Go ahead and teach, Dudette!
2012: The Year in Graphs
As 2012 draws to a close, Wonkblog asked our favorite professional wonks — economists, political scientist, politicians and more — to see what graphs and charts they felt did the best job explaining the past year. Here are their nominees.
Peter Orszag’s Chart Of The Year Could Change Everything You Think About Healthcare And The Federal Budget
This isn’t to say, definitively, that Medicare costs won’t be a huge burden for the government going forward. Demographics is a major issue, no doubt.
But it should give everyone a good reason to push back against the conventional wisdom that we have a huge deficit problem, and that we have to start chopping entitlement spending.

I read on twitter that we should know whether there’s a deal or not by 3PM ET.
I’m not big on these kinds of predictions, but the President laid out a plan that I think the R’s are most likely to take–wait until the new Congress is seated, have the Democrats propose a bill that CUTS taxes for the middle class that went up on the 1st and everyone gets to vote for it because they stay true to their ‘pledge’ and it makes them look good later: Look, constituents, I voted to CUT your taxes in 2013, aren’t I wonderful? Vote for me.
Breaking news on @MSNBC saying major setback in negotiation – like I said, you can't negotiate with GOP madness.— alasscan (@ak2sandiego) December 30, 2012
I post this with a caution to take MSNBC’s reports with the appropriate amount of salt. It appears that the DEMS/PBO are sticking to their guns while the GOP wants cuts to SS.
I also believe the DEMS are putting some of these statements out there as part of their strategy to get the GOP to give. Usually the one with the upper hand leaks info. Well, sometimes. Maybe.
From a lot of twitter chatter I got the impression Repubs want to go back to the chained CPI offer PBO made in the earlier discussions with Boehner that involved a whole lot of other concessions from the GOP, including no debt ceiling obstructions for two years. Boehner turned that offer down. So no deal. McConnell thinks he can resurrect that concession for the smaller deal while offering fewer give ups from his own side. Reid says no.
aloha and good morning chips and tods!
beautiful day here, and so glad to spend a bit of it with the tod peeps. that photo of the president making a shaka with the cutest little kid on earth is absolutely going to crack my face from grinning!
now i’m going back to catch up on reading!
That SS guy in the background wants to smile soooooo bad. He clearly loves his job.
It has been reported that the Secret Service guys love PBO because he treats them like human beings! Leave it up to our wonderful president to make the Secret Service guys feel like they’re not just hired security guards. I can imagine the way Romney treated the members of his SS detail.
Me too , majiir. I wonder if Willard accused them of things. Willard is so shady himself.
That’s why they dumped him immediately he lost…
The Secret Service typically have up to 4 days to leave the losing candidate, but in Romney’s case they left him before the night was over…
Congrats VL and HF2 for being the Victors……at TOD Chat away post.
Am I the only one who believes the Republicans have no intention of avoiding the cliff? This is all for show, so they can claim to have put forth an effort and blame the Dems for any failure. They refuse to give the President a win, even if it means everyone else loses.
Dear @SenatorReid @whitehouse Only need to do 1 thing to strengthen Social Security – remove the FICA Cap. TY. #FORWARD— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) December 30, 2012
Bob, please explain. thank you
allright, now I’m reading about this.
Of course, Sara.
Though Social Security has nothing to do with our current deficit, if the GOP wants to make it an issue, then force them to increase revenue by eliminating the cap on FICA – i.e., everyone pays, as a % of their annual income, without any upper limit on the amount of income taxed. And, if the GOP wants to keep digging the hole by lying about the solvency of Social Security, then take it a step further and add a FICA like tax to capital gains, not just earned income.
Because, what this is really about is the GOP’s desire to do only two things – 1. provide more wealth to the wealthiest, and 2. destroy the social safety net as a way to do #1. As the President has demonstrated this past year, the longer we can keep Americans focused on those two realities about the GOP, the weaker the GOP becomes.
I’m clear. thank you, Bobfr.
I’m going to retweet it to my Sen. & Rep. Ok?

Actually it is for an Assistant U. S. Attorney General nomination.
MESSAGE TO MSM: PBO is not Lincoln, Roosevelt, Reagan or Clinton. GET OVER IT! He is a Black Prez dealing with a mainly old White GOP House!— Rhonda for OBAMA (@Rhon09) December 30, 2012
‘…old, envious, obstinate white GOP House…’
Well said Bobfr! Even more important, Bob, his name is PRESIDENT OBAMA! He is also dealing with probably the most depraved members of Congress in history who would rather put ideology above solving the critical problems facing the nation. What always amuses me about the media people talking about Lincoln, Roosevelt, Reagan and Clinton is that they invoke mythological history rather than the real history about these Presidents. As much as I strongly supported President Clinton, the fact of the matter is he is one of the two Presidents in history impeached by the House of Representatives who barely escaped from being removed from office because the U.S. Senate did not have 2/3 of their members willing to vote for their removal. People forget that Senators like Mitch McConnell, John McCain and Linsey Graham (at the time Rep. Graham) voted to remove Bill Clinton from office, over some tawdry sexual affair. So called journalists like Chris Matthews concurred. Now all of a sudden, Bill Clinton is such a great President.
Looks like talks are breaking down over the GOP’s request to put the chained CPI back into the deal. Dems said it’s not a part of this deal and will not agree.
Notice that the media is trying to act as though it’s the DEMS who are not willing to play ball when the President asked for a simple up or down vote on UI and extension of middle-class tax cuts.

Reid on SEnate floor updating now……
Sticking point now is SS cuts. Reid says, NO. Willing to make difficult concessions but not willing to touch SS in a short-term agreement.
They will go into caucus and will have a statement about outcome later.
Reid says he is not overly optimistic but is cautiously optimistic.
Lindsay Graham is saying that there are 80 senators ready to vote on the bill without chained CPI included. Sounds like someone wants to be done ASAP.
No chained CPI unless repubs agree to stop playing with the debt ceiling. They want chained CPI right now and are planning to use the debt ceiling to obtain cuts to Medicare, and , who knows, further cuts to SS. And of course they’re planning to not make any concessions on the defense budget, on taxes on dividends, and on oil subsidies. NO WAY.

These guys are the biggest bunch of self serving freeloaders EVER! Want to do the least, and reap the most….all the while vailing this as “fiscal responsibility”. Screw you.
Precisely. They sicken me. I hope this makes the American people turn on them further because they deserve the highest scorn. And that goes for the idiot lazy press, too.
meta, the public has a very short memory when it comes to someone trying to screw them over. Don’t forget, Mitt did get over 60 million votes.
I would prefer 250,000 being the cutoff point, but I can live with 400,000 to 500,000 to make the deal work. SS is OFF the table, I doubt if it was ever on the table. Boehner should have taken the first offer that President Obama made to him, now he gets nothing, or even less than nothing if thats even possible.
I read last week that after the last negotiations broke down, Don, that Boehner sent aides to the WH to ask the president to offer them the same deal he offered last year. Of course, PBO declined. I would have turned them down, too, since they trashed his offer last year. They can’t be allowed to go back and choose something they rejected last year. The president reminded them that he had campaigned on allowing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy to expire, and he was keeping his promise to the American people.
uh oh. I can’t seem to get on twitter – I get a “Malware detected” by my browser (I use Chrome). Any other Twitterer’s getting this message?

Yes, I got that malware message from chrome as well.
I got that message on Chrome also; I thought it was because Twitter was down (I use two computers).
But annoyingly enough Twitter works fine on the less robust one, but I’m still getting the Chrome malware page on my primary computer.
Very frustrating. Thanks for posting, to let TODers know (online tech support for Twitter, Chrome, etc., is pretty much non-existent).
thx you guys nice to know I’m not the only one. now i’m magically OK. ?. It’s a cyber mystery. :-)
Fiscal cliff talks hit a “major setback.” Are you freaking kidding me?
The “major setback” being the CPI that all the emoproggs were up in arms about. President Obama offered it up in his first offer to Boehner, but like clock work Boehner refused. And now Sen. Reid is saying hell no to the “CPI.” Actually it was smart of Barack to offer up the CPI knowing that the Republicans will never accept it, and now they are begging for anything that they can get so as not to look totally inept.

Bobf, my new refrain to anyone that thinks the voting public will wise up in time to save itself is to note that Mitt Romney received over 60 million votes. In other words, the voting public as a whole is a glutton for punishment.
The only thing republicans really care about is wielding power. They don’t care about the economy, the people, foreign relations, climate change, or anything else. Power is their aphrodisiac.
So true, so very true.
So the republicans have put themselves in the position on demanding cuts to Social Security in exchange for raising taxes on the wealthiest americans. Wow, talk about hurting yourself politically. This whole fiscal cliff comedy is good for at least one thing: exposing the true agenda of the republicans.
just saw this picture of pbo in hawaii–haven’t seen it here before. cute kid, too! caption: ‘My son, Evan Sakamoto, had the opportunity to meet President Obama yesterday (12/26) at Klipper Golf Course. ‘
I think it is wonderful how kids are never afraid to approach PBO. He’s a people person, and little people seem to know instinctively that he’s accessible no matter where he is.

Heartily agree with the tweet which said that it looks like the GOP wants to punish the American people for re-electing President Obama.
IMO, that is what all of the obstruction has been about, dotster. It’s as if they’re saying, “I’ll teach you, how dare you vote a democrat into the WH, especially one who is a POC!!!” They are the most spiteful group of individuals I’ve ever seen in my life. McCain has been holding a grudge now for 4+ years. He and the other republicans just knew they had a winner in Romney, they knew their propaganda program had worked, and they received the surprise of their lives when the American people disagreed with them on November 6. Revenge, spite, vindictiveness, pettiness, cowardice, and ways to avoid doing their jobs is all they seem to know.

from sam wang, terrific article (wonkilicious!): ‘Gerrymanders, Part 1: Busting the both-sides-do-it myth’
‘As current negotiations over the [fiscal cliff] / [austerity bomb] make clear, rank-and-file Republicans in the House of Representatives are not receptive to the policy implications of November’s election. As correctly pointed out by Nate Silver, members of Congress are increasingly insulated by the increasing polarization of their districts. Ever-larger victory margins reflect ever-safer re-election races.
Today I give an analysis that pinpoints some exceptional – and asymmetric – aspects of this year’s Congressional redistricting. I base this on criteria I have developed for identifying when a political party has been disenfranchised. I conclude that the antidemocratic balance of power in the incoming Congress is driven by just a handful of states. ‘

When PBO first offered chained CPI to them, they rejected it. Now, McConnell wants it included as part of the deal, and PBO isn’t having it. They should learn by now that if he offers them something the first time, they need to take it because he’s not going to offer it to them again. They did the same thing when he offered his “grand bargain” last year, and after Boehner walked away from this year’s negotiations, he sent aides to the WH to ask the president if he’d make the same offer he made last year, and he told them NO DEAL. I don’t blame the president. Republicans are too quick to reject his ideas, so they shouldn’t be given the same offer at a later time simply because they are incapable of creating a workable plan of their own. PBO is forcing them to act in a serious manner, and they hate it.

People like Ezra Klein only add to the confusion with their noisy misinformation and their never ending need to stay relevant by jumping into conversations they know nothing about…
If only they’d heed that old saying: silence is golden…
Or the other: better to keep quiet and be thought a fool, than to open ones trap- or in Ezra’s case, disseminate crappy opinion pieces- and remove every doubt that one is indeed a fool…
You have identified some of the main reason I don’t watch Klein’s program, Chi. He wants to show the world how smart he is. He’s just been fortunate to find a good paying job. There are kids in journalism school who could do a better job than he does at getting facts out to the American people. I get so tired of him splitting blame and failing to tell the truth about the two political parties. I’m rather well-informed on politics, and it offends me to hear him say that “both parties are guilty of _____,” because it’s not true. I read a post on Bob Cesca’s blog earlier today that contains research that shows just how much more extreme republicans have become over the last 130 years. The data shows that democrats have remained very stable in their beliefs, but republicans have moved far, far to the right. The writer/researcher concluded that republicans in Congress are primarily responsible for the gridlock in Congress and the divisiveness in the country, but they’ve done a pretty good job of convincing their supporters that PBO is the cause of these things, when he’s not.
Well said, Chi!

Some FYI. The lady on the front end of this presentation, Dr. Margaret Burroughs, was a High School classmate of my mother. She founded and began The DuSable Museum which she began in her home back in the 50’s. Mom would visit her girlfriend and drag me along to look at the spooky stuff she had from Africa.
It grew and grew to what it is now, a large cultural center on the Southside of Chicago. Believe it or not, the location is in the same neighborhood as the Presidents home and the University of Chicago.
Cool. I got to visit the museum a few years back while I was on a work assignment there. Fantastic!

Sounds as though your mom introduced you to all kinds of good things in the wider world, while some of our mothers weren’t venturing too far from home. (Back in the late ’30s and early ’40s, my mother wanted to go work for a publishing house in Europe, after reading Gone With The Wind a gazillion times, and other books, but ended up getting married and raising 3 daughters! At the very least, she taught us to love words, and I’m eternally grateful for that.)
That ain’t the half of it. My mom was the first secretary of John Johnson(owner of Ebony Magazine) before it was a mag. It was called the Negro Digest.
Tell me you have old copies of that! Did your mom ever write any of her own life story? (Or she was too busy living it, probably!)
Negative. Mom was task oriented. Her thing was the typewriter, believe it or not, and she got so good she could take dictation while on the type writer. She would work for prominent lawyers typing briefs as they spoke.
After WWII, when my dad drifted away and my mother had to raise said 3 daughters herself, she also ended up being a superb secretary, made a career of it, and was a whiz at typing and steno. I currently have a collection of old typewriters, in her honor. As you’re intimating, when your mother did that work, starting on the old manual typewriters, as did mine, accuracy and speed counted – not like the computers of today! Good for both of them! Ladies of the written word!
Seriously Yardarm? Ebony was called the Negro Digest?? And your Mom worked for Johnson??
Yup. I was a snot nosed kid and it was right after the war.
Ah Yardarm, what a history – and your Mom must have had some extraordinary stories to tell.
A bunch you can google “Negro Digest” for more specific info.
Wow, Yardarm! You are such a repository of history and culture. Friends of mine tell me I must come to Chicago because I have such deep interest in African American history and culture. One of the places they highly recommend is the DuSable Museum/ Cultural Center. I plan to make it there one of these days.
You won’t be disappointed. I guarantee! To me this stuff is old hat. When you come, make sure you visit the Museum of Science and Industry also. It’s only 10 minutes away from DuSable. The best time to come here is before the 4th of July or right after Labor Day.
I am definitely saving to come there. I would also like to go to Indianapolis to see the Madam C.J. Walker Building because I heard it was restored.
Can’t speak to that. I do know she had a heavy influence in the Chicago area.
Agriculture panel leaders reach deal for extending farm bill, maintaining milk prices: apne.ws/VqqtFd -SS— The Associated Press (@AP) December 30, 2012
well that’s a relief, because i already pay $5.99 for a half gallon here in hawaii.
I loaded up on milk at the grocery store the other day, susanne. We have a new store called Aldi’s, it began in Germany. Aldi’s was selling milk for $2.49 a gallon, and I bought four gallons, put them in my freezer–just in case nothing was done on the farm bill.

I do too, Dudette. Chaka Fattah has been a reliable supporter of President Obama.

The one thing that ALL Republicans excel at is LYING. It is the thread that runs through any interaction with the party. Dishonesty is their stock-in-trade.
Yep, they’re lying about it the same way Romney/Ryan lied about saving Medicare during the presidential campaign. Republicans have wanted to repeal Social Security since 1935, Medicare since 1965, and Obamacare since 2010, and they have no plan to stop trying to repeal these programs. Boehner’s Plan B would have cut funding for Obamacare. I’m glad that PBO has drawn his line in the sand and refused to hurt the middle class and the disadvantaged among us. Many republicans don’t even know how hard PBO has been fighting for them, as they trash him with every breath they take.
They’re cracking me up.

#MyWishIn2013 is for Chaz Bono to move to DC and teach some Democrats how to be a man.— John Fugelsang (@JohnFugelsang) December 30, 2012
Oh please, John Fugelhsang can save his admonishment of Democrats for people who are impressed with his occasional need to kiss up to republicans in his quest to be thought of as reasonable and credible…
Fugelsang can be as irritatingly self-righteous and conciliatory as the very Democrats he snarks at…
He only stays pure and unyielding when it comes to gay rights…any other area is open to varying perspectives and ‘respecting’ the opinions of members of his own family who are comfortably rightwing…
Big mistake on my part. Ya’ll please forgive me for posting this.
You Sir have nothing to apologize for…
I hope you weren’t reacting to my post…
My rather frustrated post was in response to Fugelsang’s snide comment and overall attitude towards (in my opinion, the wrong) Democrats in general and President Obama in particular (something he does quite often)…
He constantly irritates me as he does the phenomenal Hal Sparks with his constant digs at President Obama…
He’s got to stay in the good graces of Al Gore and the anti-Obama choir over at Current led by Cenk Ugyur…
I concur in part. I did too quick a read and should not have brought it over.

Hey Fredo, you know Johnny “Ola” Boehner don’t you?
Dear @GOP You've given #PBO an extraordinary strategic advantage, i.e., '6 nines' likelihood you'd say NO every time. STUPID, really STUPID.— Bobfr (@Our4thEstate) December 30, 2012
You never, ever enable your opponent to predict with near certainty you’re every move. That is the core error of the GOP – ever since 20 Jan 2009. PBO recognized it and has used it against them, ever so subtly initially. But, now they pay and will continue paying for at least a decade.
^^^your every move^^^
Bofr, when you are corrupt, you stop being rationale, that is what we are witnessing. I watched an 11 hour movie at home yesterday on the civil war. Somewhere in the movie a gentleman from the Confederate group asks/suggests that the Slaves be armed to help fight the war against the unions as the south were running out of soldiers, the answer was no because if they did, then the premise that Blacks were inferior to Whites becomes bogus because it will put them on equal footing!. When you are corrupt, bigot, racist etc etc, you pay the prices for critical thinking and ability to be rationale. If this wasn’t a serious situation, nobody will be needing to watch comedy for a long time but alas these repugs are the people some have chosen to lead!
Great point Bobf, but truthfully President Obama has placed the Republicans in unenviable positions since 2009. At every junction when President Obama has dragged this country forward the Republicans have let themselves get boxed into a position of trying to impede progress. Only a leader with great skill could have produced a record of achievement as vast and wide as President Obama has done while constantly being confronted with a level of hostility and obstructionism not seen in Washington in my lifetime. The Republicans have now been reduced to throwing whatever they think will stick to the wall.
Good Evening Tods:)
