The question is: Is Chuck Hagel being nominated to be Secretary of Defense of the Israel or the United States? I couldn’t care less what Hagel’s opinion of Israel is, because as far as I’m concerned, the foreign policy comes from President Obama, who was re-elected with strong majorities. It would be great to hear what Israel has done to protect the United States from threat, and to give something back in the relationship. In the meantime, President Obama gets to choose his own team and his own agenda. And I don’t think that making Israel and Netanyahu’s puppets in the US Congress is high up on his list of priorities.

I personally feel that Sen. Baldwin needed to use her time, not in front of the tv camera this morning, but in her private conversation with Mr. Hagel as she will have face time with Nominee Hagel. I felt that her spoken words this morning just continues to muddy the waters on this issue.
I am grateful for the women being in the Senate, but Sen. Baldwin needs to maybe learn that in some cases, some words need to be formed in a more measured manner and in an appropriate venue. In watching the President talking about the nomination of Hagel I was struck with the importance of placing people in high positions who understand how their decisions impact the lives of regular people. President Obama talked about Hagel fighting in Viet Nam. Hagel knows what war is all about. Part of the problem with Bush and Chaney was that they had no idea what war is–just “bring it on”. Both the President and Mrs. Obama have put a spotlight on military families and the effects of war on actual people. Although the President hasn’t been in war, his empathy for those who have far exceeds that of former presidents. I had the idea that those that vote to go to war should have some skin in the game. If they don’t have a son or daughter to send, maybe there would be a nephew or granddaughter–make it real. I think of Romney with 5 sons, none who served–what a poor example. I know–I have some simplistic thinking going on here, but there it is.

The Republicans do not give one whit about actual military personnel, and they have no hesitation about starting wars and fighting them with other people’s children

I am glad the President took the deal. This means that a friend of our with three kids will still receive unemployment benefits while she is still out there looking for a job.

Knoller can’t keep up with the deficit because he’s so busy stuffing his big mouth
Jay Carney had finished the press briefing and was walking off the podium when Mark Knoller began spewing nonsense about how Pres. Obama had racked up huge spending, had authorized multiple spending bills and then he began spewing nonsense about the debt ceiling. Carney turned around walked back to the podium (his expression was “Motherfucker what did you just say about Pres. Obama?”) he looked Knoller dead in the eye and began responding to Knoller’s nonsense. He pretty much told Knoller that it was a lie regarding what he said about Pres. Obama and spending. He told Knoller that it’s disingenuous for him to ascribe spending bills that were passed in the Bush Admin to Pres. Obama. He told Knoller that everyone knows who turned a surplus into a deficit so let’s not pretend that Pres. Obama is at fault.
Knoller kept trying to interrupt him and Carney cut him off and gave a rundown of spending bills, how Bush turned a huge surplus into a deficit, how the debt ceiling doesn’t mean Pres. Obama spent recklessly but it means congress spent the money and should now pay its bills. Knoller muttered something and Carney told Knoller point blank that Pres. Obama will not negotiate with a congress that threatens to abdicate its obligations.
Then Carney did the equivalent of “Good Day Sir” and walked away.

Not one of these right wingers, media, pundits, twitter-experts, etc., can ever actually list what they think makes up the current deficit. I asked one of them point blank on twitter a few months ago to tell me what bills President Obama had passed that he thought made up the deficit total. He couldn’t. I sent him charts showing that the bulk of the deficit came from Bush’s spending, and that debt incurred during President Obama’s time included extraordinary measures to recover the economy from Bush’s recession, and that the Stimulus had already been paid off through deficit reduction efforts. He just stopped tweeting after a while. They talk in generalities, but when confronted with specific questions or called to supply specifics to back up their arguments, they go running. Cowards and liars.
I love Jay and I totally think that he must and should be given more respect from these nuts. I can hold my tongue at some points, but I made an effort to call the WH and tell them how I felt about the treatment of the WHPC.
I also wrote to the WH about the same issue. I know that our POTUS and those representing the president at the podium in the press room will not take this crap during this second term. The WH team is tired of this disrespect to Jay and to the President. They are not coming out swinging, and they are going to be strong on this. Enough is enough. As another older woman, I agree with you, in that I think he’s better looking now than in his 20’s. That’s possibly because my husbeland has the same kind of looks, and he is still handsome. Some men age very well, others don’t. What someone earlier said, what they are inside shows when they get older, and the good ones inside become better looking.

Combatants start taking sides on Hagel nomination

Let’s put aside, at least for now, McCain’s skills when it comes to evaluating officials for high public office (ahem), and instead consider why Hagel’s “positions on a range of critical national security issues” were fine in 2008, when McCain wanted Hagel in his own cabinet, but raise “serious concerns” now. How does McCain explain this? As best as I can tell, he doesn’t.
Similarly, Bill Kristol wanted Hagel for national office on a Republican ticket, but is now helping lead the charge against Hagel’s nomination. Why anyone would take Kristol’s perspective seriously on such matters is itself a bit of a mystery.
But what’s especially interesting is the argument from the right about instigating a larger conflict. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) blamed President Obama for starting “yet another political fight.” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-Ohio) believes Hagel is an “in-your-face nomination by the president.”
For the record, Dennis Kucinich would be an “in-your-face nomination.”
If President Obama takes a deep breath, the GOP start screeching that he’s starting another political fight. Why do we have to keep listening to these people?

Off ALL topics, but has anyone noticed a bruise on President Obamas right cheek? At one of the press conferences prior to Christmas it looked like his right eye was a little black and the cheek bruise was really bad. I noticed today that his eye is fine now, but he’s still got that nasty bruise on his cheek. Anyone else see it? Anyone know what may have happened? I hope everyone gets a chance to watch this briefing. My love and admiration for Jay Carney grows every time I watch the sarcastic jackals asking stupid questions and pretending to be real journalists. Jay has the patience of Job. I don’t know how he stands them. Most of the questions are about process, feelings or some he said / she said nonsense. Boehner said (fill in the blank), what’s your response?? They are just conduits for the GOP talking points. It’s pathetic.
There are about FOUR times during the briefing today where Jay makes some pointed comments about the debt limit and the responsibility of congress to pay the bills that they have incurred. He was relentlessly on message that there will be no negotiating about the debt limit. Congress racked up the bills and it is their responsibility to ensure the bills get paid. There’s nothing to negotiate. Just make sure the bills get paid.
Every Democrat that gets near a tv camera and/or microphone should be parroting exactly what Jay said today. He was making a whole lota sense. And the American people understand what it means to be a “DEADBEAT.” It is unseemly to think that an elected official would ever be so reckless. Hopefully, the transcript of the briefing will be posted soon.
Ladyhawke, I could not agree more. I love too that Jay made it a point to say it was Congress and the previous administration that racked up these bills, NOT PBO’s administration. I think most of the press knows that, but they know that a lot of Americans don’t know it, and so they spout off on it. I am shocked at how much ignorance I run into about PBO, and one of the main things I hear over and over is how much debt he’s racked up, when in fact…most of it came before he took office. I was delighted to see Jay remind us of that today.
Only time I’ve seen such a dumb set of WH press corps was during the Monica Lewinski scandal. They aren’t getting any smarter. They were pretty dumb during the run up to Iraq war too. Jay just gets better.

Prettyfoot, Romeo makes a very elementary yet compelling point. Frankly, I don’t think this has anything to do with Republican opposition to paying bills incurred by the government. They’ve done that willingly in the past. This is all about destroying America and then blaming the destruction on President Obama. New Mexico Chili Cookoff
If you can read this whole story without laughing, then there’s no hope for you. I was crying by the end. This is an actual account as relayed to paramedics at a chili cook-off in New Mexico .
Note: Please take time to read this slowly.
If you pay attention to the first two judges,
the reaction of the third judge is even better.
For those of you who have lived in New Mexico , you know how true this is. They actually have a Chili Cook-off about the time Halloween comes around. It takes up a major portion of a parking lot at the Santa Fe Plaza . Judge #3 was an inexperienced Chile taster named Frank, who was visiting from Springfield , IL .
Frank: Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge’s table, asking for directions to the Coors Light truck, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Native New Mexicans) that the chili wouldn’t be all that spicy; and, besides, they told me I could have free beer during the tasting, so I accepted and became Judge #3.
Here are the scorecard notes from the event:
CHILI # 1 – MIKE’S MANIAC MONSTER CHILI
Judge # 1 — A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.
Judge # 2 — Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.
Judge # 3 (Frank) — Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that’s the worst one. These New Mexicans are crazy.
CHILI # 2 – EL RANCHO’S AFTERBURNER CHILI
Judge # 1 — Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang.
Judge # 2 — Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.
Judge # 3 — Keep this out of the reach of children. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me theHeimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.
CHILI # 3 – ALFREDO’S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN CHILI
Judge # 1 — Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick.
Judge # 2 — A bit salty, good use of peppers.
Judge # 3 — Call the EPA. I’ve located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I’m getting sh*t-faced from all of the beer.
CHILI # 4=2 0- BUBBA’S BLACK MAGIC
Judge # 1 — Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.
Judge # 2 — Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.
Judge # 3 — I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This 300 lb. Woman is starting to look HOT … Just like this nuclear waste I’m eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac?
CHILI # 5 – LISA’S LEGAL LIP REMOVER
Judge # 1 — Meaty, strong chili. Jalapeno peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.
Judge # 2 — Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the jalapeno peppers make a strong statement.
Judge # 3 — My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I’m burning my lips off.. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw them.
CHILI # 6 – VARGA’S VERY VEGETARIAN VARIETY
Judge # 1 — Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers.
Judge # 2 — The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb.
Judge # 3 — My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted, and I’m worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Sally. Can’t feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.
CHILI # 7 – SUSAN’S SCREAMING SENSATION CHILI
Judge # 1 — A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.
Judge # 2 — Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment. **I should take note that I am worried about Judge #3. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.
Judge # 3 — You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn’t feel a thing. I’ve lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they’ll know what killed me. I’ve decided to stop breathing. It’s too painful. Screw it; I’m not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I’ll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach.
CHILI # 8 – BIG TOM ‘S TOENAIL CURLING CHILI
Judge # 1 — The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.
Judge # 2 — This final entry is a good, balanced chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he’s going to make it. Poor fella, wonder how he’d have reacted to really hot chili?
Judge # 3 — No report.
HA! Yardarm! My husband is a Texan and he has had to calm down his cooking for his Minnesotan wife but even tonight he made ME hotdish and it was so hot I couldn’t taste it. Poor guy……

Wow, Mr. Hagel is pretty impressive in this clip. Guts, leadership, and integrity. You can see why President Obama has chosen Senator Hagel to help him fight back against the neocons and the lobbying of the defense contractors. Chuck Hagel’s first loyalty is to the troops and to his country. He’s tough and isn’t afraid of telling it like it is. Wow.

They have just called Obama a “crazed ideologue,” Are they nuts?! The most measured, considerate and even-keeled president that I can remember in my lifetime a crazed ideologue?? Please!

I figured that I could live without her allowing her personal biases about her sexual orientation to let her avoid facing the truth that PBO has done more for LGBTQ Americans than any president in our history. PBO chooses his battles carefully. He knew that going head to head with republicans over Amb. Rice would be pointless because they have way more time than he does to run to every network to lie about her. He stated his support for her, what else did RM want him to do? His govt. had something similar happen in England and both parties there came together and changed gun laws there. They have a very low rate of gun deaths because of that now.

I am a little confused myself as to why he had him on his show. But as the guy that came on after him said(forgot his name, a lawyer) that it is good that Piers is exposing this kind of craziness so that Americans can see just how totally dangerous some of these people are. I tend to agree with him. Maybe this exposure will wake up more Americans to help in the fight to legislate some kind of gun control.

I suspect that Frank was never Patrick’s first choice and probably wasn’t even on his list (I’m guessing he’s been compiling a list since Obama won re-election or before besides the Susan Rice stuff, the CW was the Kerry would be SoS after HRC). So the “push” by Frank and now his liberal allies are such that now the Guv can’t even go with his first choice which probably wasn’t Barney Frank to begin with. Now whover Patrick picks, unless it is Frank, which pale in comparison.
The aide should just shut it, but still I understand the frustration for Guv Patrick’s camp.
I thought Barney Frank wanted to return to civilian life and live the blist of domestic routine forever. Wasn’t it for that reason he resigned his House seat? What’s this new desire of going to the Senate on a temporary basis? Although I would not mind having Frank as a strong voice in the Senate, it is I believe Gov. Deval’s decision to pick up whomever he wants to secure that seat for the Democrats.
Maybe Gov. Patrick was thinking about giving a few months’ exposure on the national scene in this important role to a woman or an ethnic minority candidate. I understand LGBT candidates are also in the minority, and I’m all for that, but it really was not good that Barney Frank put the Governor in this spot. It kind of cheated Patrick out of making his own choice, which I would have liked to have seen – to give us all an even better understanding of how Gov. Patrick operates, because ya know he’s goin’ places in the future, as well! If Barney was his first choice, or is his final choice, then none of this matters, of course.
And if it is Viki Kennedy, Then everybody will forget who barney Frank is.
I have ZERO doubt that Gov Patrick will pick precisely who he considers his first choice. Anyone who thinks he and the President didn’t include in their calculus a ‘Barney variable’ only display the typical naivete of the politically naive :)
President Obama epitomizes political savvy, and then some, and add ten more steps ahead of the rest of us to that, but unless Barney Frank gave somebody an indication of what he was planning on announcing as his goal, his actions were so quirky and “stayed-too-long-at-the-party-ish,” it could have been news to even Pres. Obama and Gov. Patrick. I don’t recall the timing, and I’m hoping he at least confided in Gov. Patrick before announcing it to the media. (That would lead to more questions of his judgment.) In any event, it didn’t show well for Barney, but Gov. Patrick will do the right thing (especially since he and the President confide in each other and, as you said, would have discussed all this).
