They know he won’t be the puppet of Wall Street. The republicans are not happy either about Jack Lew’s nomination. Not surprising…
Fascinating and concerning at the same time to see how the Big Money Boys and the Big Lobbies are revealing themselves by openly screaming about Chuck Hagel and Jack Lew. They KNOW that President Obama means business and wants to do something against the entrenched powers that have controlled Washington for too long.
I just wish “the left” would see the light: President Obama is the real deal. Oh… he can make compromises when he doesn’t have the choice, but make no mistake: he is the most progressive, the most courageous, the most determined, the most effective president America has had in a long time. THAT, more than his race IMO, is why he faces so much resistance and resentment.
When POTUS was introducing Jack, I like the way he picked up on VPOTUS’ point that a budget is the reflection of your values. Loved the “no peacocks, no jerks, no whiners” as a rule for Washington. How gracious and humble was Tim! And Jack was funny and personable.

Rep. Becerra to Obama, Democratic leaders: Don’t mess with Social Security

That said, it’s worth considering why, exactly, the GOP has come to dislike Lew so much that some Senate Republicans started announcing their opposition to his nomination before he was even introduced.
The answer, it appears, is that GOP leaders see him as too competent and knowledgeable, which has gotten in the way of Republican plans.
The New York Times had a fascinating piece last year on the 2011 debt-ceiling crisis negotiations, and House Speaker John Boehner’s frustrations that Lew had a “detailed knowledge of the budget” that “outpaced anyone else’s in the room.” It got to the point that Boehner kept trying to get Lew out of the room, in the hopes that it’d be easier to strike a GOP-friendly deal.
/SNIP/
So, Republicans hate Lew the same way a con man hates the guy who knows how a con works.
that’s the same reason bonehead will never negotiate with pbo again–pbo knows too much, is too competent. which not only makes boner feel stupid, but he can’t seem to win.
One of my phantasms has always been to see a public debate between Jack Lew and Paul Ryan. Oh boy what a pleasure it would be to see Mr. Lew put an end to the inflated reputation of Ryan as a budget wonk. How satisfying would it be to see Ryan’s distorted math be debunked once and for all !
I wish we will see Jack Lew on tv. He is “low key” but less shy than Mr. Geithner. He comes off as extremely knowledgeable and honest. Maybe he can win some political points for the president during the acrimonious debate we’ll have to endure in the next few weeks.
good read on aipac and hagel’s appointment, from al jazeera site:
‘American Jews will not tolerate the suggestion that they are anything but good Americans. Fighting a president over a national security issue is simply not sustainable.
Although a president’s choice for Secretary of Defence is not in really a national security issue, it does get to the question of an American president and his security prerogatives. After all, the Department of Defence personifies US national security. Once President Obama made clear that he would nominate Hagel, the game was over.

Frankly, I am surprised that the president went ahead over the lobby’s opposition. I am well-known for my belief that it could not be beaten, although I have always offered the caveat that it would be if a president fought back hard.

The lobby will not be able to block a president determined to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on terms fair to both sides. It is like the father of modern Zionism, Theodor Herzl, said: “If you will it, it is no dream.” ‘
I’ll take whatever voices we can get, even this one. He’s speaking out when other “friendlies” are scared silent, or saying the bare minimum on the subject.
Yes, dotster I agree. We need all the voices possible. He has taken a lot of guff, and stood strong. good for him.
Many people laugh at the Brits. They shouldn’t. Their murder by gun number is VERY low. Walking in London is wonderful, because you know people are not “packing.”
I see many who have moved here from other countries are especially shocked about the widespread gun violence we have been tolerating in this country. It’s difficult to comprehend.
Well, Sessions is getting help from emoprogs in the Senate and Senate wannabes like Barney Frank. Without weighing judiciously the man’s record. All I can find is some knee-jerk response that for a couple of years he worked on Wall St. The rest of his career has been in public service, for God’s sake. He drew a hard line against Medicaid cuts in the 2011 deal. Budget issues Clinton gets credit for, and Lew was right there.
Repubs hate him because he’s all math-y and truth-y and serious and stuff.
I don’t understand when everyone lost the ability to weigh things carefully. I have some serious questions about some of Geithner’s choices, but he shepherded us through what could have been global collapse, working against a batshit crazy Congress. I don’t love the guy (and will get shrieks even here for saying so), but he did a very decent job under very bad circumstances. I believe the banks and Wall St. could have paid a higher price under his leadership, and they didn’t. Is he my progressive Treasury Secretary dream? Dreams are just that. Progress and competence and seriousness balance the scale strongly in Geithner’s favor and he was a good choice.
But by all means, because Lew spent five minutes working on Wall St., let’s make it hard to get him confirmed. Because, Barney Frank and Bernie Sanders, you’re gonna get Paul Krugman confirmed instead?
Martin, Goldie and Karen hit the Obama cabinet diversity just right, with wisdom balance and fairness.
Now I can go read a book, though I am interested Rev. Al ‘s take.
Tomorrow, Karzai will be here, and the news will be complaining that the President is getting out of Afghanistan to early. After they slammed him for 4 years for not getting out sooner.
The media is the ones who are incompetent and mad that their taxes went up.
Gov. Gerry Brown predicts a 851 million dollar State Surplus for a budget.
That’s what happens when you have a Democratic State… You balance the Books responsibly. Well done, Gerry, well done.
Thank God that we have him instead of that Meg Whitman. She would have been Mitt Romney in a dress. My local news have been reporting this all day. Way to go Gov. Brown.
Yes. We should NEVER allow a Republican near the Governorship ever again. Whenever we are in “surplus” status there are shouts to give back the money! Hopefully they won’t vote in a Republican who who cut taxes for the wealthy and we’ll be in a deficit again.
I love, love love the fact that the president surrounds himself with smart, loyal, dedicated people who in turn surround themselves with “policy and not T V cameras.” I like all of his choices to replace the members of the cabinet who are leaving. I think that I will write that line about “no peacocks, no jerks, no whiners” on my bulletin board. It should also be emblazoned on the walls of congress and in any room where negotiations are going on.
And what happen to those 20 six and seven years old, how their tiny little bodies were rip to pieces by that assault weapon, we all have to speak up and out. The NRA must not win this battle.
They won’t win, we won’t back down no matter what. I am just a bit taken aback that so many people’s reaction to all this would be to run to the NRA. I can’t quite wrap my head around that one.
Has anyone been to the White House ‘contact us’ site and offered your support for PBO’s choices? He could use an ‘atta boy right about now. http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact
I think that would actually be a nice suggestion AND link to post on twitter each time the naysayers start to act out. The only drawback I see is if the naysayers added their negativity to the site. What say you?
“the naysayers added their negativity to the site”. All the more reason for us to contribute with diligence often. We can’t be the silent majority. We have to have PBO’s back out loud, where it matters, not just by reinforcing each other’s views here. I try to send something to somebody every day. Today Andrea Mitchell felt my wrath. Then PBO felt my support.
I really do like your suggestion and would not be averse to posting the link, but I wonder if enough supporters would respond each time. See the whiners are never hesitant to whine and failing our regular responses I wouldn’t want to be responsible for drawing a lot more negative attention to PBO’s door.
I see your point and it requires careful consideration as to the make-up of the audience. I visit many sites, but wouldn’t dream of posting the link on many of them. It wouldn’t be appreciated and it may give folks of whom otherwise wouldn’t know of the link try to reek havoc.
oh no, don’t delete it. I was just reading it and thought how nice that you took this on. that’s how movements begin. I didn’t mean to discourage you. Yours was a tweet out to the cyberspace. i was referring to some select blog sites, where I know they would use the opportunity for ill, because of the type of folks who comment on those sites. I think a tweet will capture the minds of folks who aren’t peacocks, whiners, nor jerks. Those folks should outnumber the trouble makers.
Okay CM, I made a tweet which I’ll try to remember to repost for a while, each time the moaners and groaners pull out their act. Others can too.
Too silent while the whiners hog the stage? Use the WH ‘contact us’ site & SUPPORT PBO’s choices. He needs to hear YOU! whitehouse.gov/contact— Vick C. (@sonamie) January 10, 2013
I wrote for our family on the White House site. He needs to hear from supporters……I told him there are more of us than the naysayers, the naysayers are just louder. We also need to contact the leftie naysayers and remind them of the damage they can do. They need to know there are more supporters of the president than of them.
‘They need to know there are more supporters of the president than of them.’
I wholeheartedly agree, but while I am convinced that there are more of us (reference the election results), I am not yet convinced that we are energized enough, when it is not specifically a matter of voting, to let our voices be heard positively. It’s so much ‘easier’ to criticize than to praise in our culture. In fact, we accept criticism with greater ‘grace’ face than we do praise. It would be nice, I’m thinking to start nurturing that aspect of our participation. I noticed here that JackieG, Linda from WiW, and a couple of others are on track for this by encouraging the Action initiative. We really should expend more energy on this. [I hold back pushing certain things due to my ‘far-inner’ status and I hesitate to sign petitions to nudge the WH etc. because I am very conscious of my non-native status. I don’t ever want to be in the way negatively. I am usually uncomfortable with not telling the truth and so won’t use a made up zip, etc. etc. (No offense meant but***…) These are the only times I wish I were an Am’can citizen; all the other times when I see the wackos(sp in honour of you, Amk) I’m happy I’m not.

“So I’m at Wal-Mart buying a bag of dog food for my dog. While in the check-out line, a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. Why else would I be buying dog food, RIGHT??? So on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Dog food Diet again, and that I probably shouldn’t because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in intensive
care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and all you do is load your pockets with food Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle’s butt and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Better watch what you ask me and be prepared for my answer. I have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say. Now that you’ve read this I have to confess, I copied it. Now copy and share. Make someone else laugh”
LOL! I took my grandson in for one of his baby exams. We were in the doctor’s examining room, waiting for the doctor to come in for the
doctor to arrive. He examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-feed or bottle-fed.
‘Breast-fed,’ I said..
‘Well, strip down to your waist,’ the doctor ordered.
I did. He pinched my nipples, pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a very professional and detailed examination.
He motioned me to get dressed, and said, ‘ No wonder this baby is underweight. You don’t have any milk.’
‘I know, I said, ‘I’m his Grandma’,
But I’m glad I came.”
I felt all the good thoughts and I think they may have helped. I’ll let you know:) Good luck with your little surgery…MY turn to pay it forward. Thinking of you:)

Little Bruce and Margaret are only 10 years old, but they know they are in love.
One day they decide that they want to get married, so Bruce goes to Margaret’s father to ask him for her hand.
Bruce bravely walks up to him and says, “Mr. Smith, me and Margaret are in love and I want to ask you for her hand in marriage.”
Thinking that this was just the cutest thing,Mr. Smith replies,”Well Bruce, you are only 10.. Where will you two live?”
Without even taking a moment to think about it, Bruce replies,”In Margaret’s room. It’s bigger than mine and we can both fit there nicely.”
Still thinking this is just adorable,
Mr. Smith says with a huge grin, “Okay, then how will you live? You’re not old enough to get a job. You’ll need to support Margaret.”
Again, Bruce instantly replies, “Our allowance, Margaret makes five bucks a week and I make 10 bucks a week. That’s about 60 bucks a month, so that should do us just fine.”
Mr. Smith is impressed Bruce has put so much thought into this.
“Well Bruce, it seems like you have everything figured out.
I just have one more question. What will you do if the two of you should have little children of your own?”
Bruce just shrugs his shoulders and says,
“Well, we’ve been lucky so far.”
Mr. Smith no longer thinks this little s*#t is adorable.
The backlash against the pastor giving the inaugural benediction paid off……he stepped out, and the committee accepted that according to reports. That took a day.
I read today that there is a committee which plans the inauguration ceremony, it is not the president alone, and Eric Cantor is on the committee. The president gets some prerogatives, but there is other input too. So…..I’m assuming that the choice of this man was from someone on the far right on the committee who wanted to make the president look bad. I believe the president has other things on his mind right now. He undoubtedly had some input and choices, but the committee actually plans the inaugural.

The lobby group’s statement likely signals it will oppose any legislative attempt to change federal gun laws.…
Most of those gun nuts don’t even know or understand what the 2nd Amendment says. And if they want to defend the homeland so badly, why can’t they join the police force or the military. I, personally, don’t want to be “defended” by any of those gun nuts – I was to be defended FROM them!

Not to change the topic but…wow…the drum of insanity beats on…

Rain, I still believe there is more of us than it is of them.
DONE! Thanks for suggestion and link.
Thanks. Off to offer my support.
See, that’s what I meant. I posted my tweet BEFORE seeing that you did agree with my reservation re undesirable responses. I have now deleted it.
oh no, don’t delete it.
ABOVE TWEET HAS BEEN DELETED BY ‘MOI’ BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU GUYS SHOULD NOT GO TO THE ‘CONTACT US’ SITE AND PAT PBO ON THE BACK – regularly!!

In fact, we accept criticism with greater
‘grace’face than we do praise. I am usually uncomfortable with not telling the truth and so won’t use a made up zip, etc. etc. (No offense meant but***…) These are the only times I wish I were an Am’can citizen; all the other times when I see the wackos(sp in honour of you, Amk) I’m happy I’m not.*** preamble by my offspring when he’s about to step on my ego
I loved the tweet.
Okay, I’ll reinstate it, CM…..later You are trying to twist me into a pretzel, aren’t you?
My D-i-L posted this on facebook:
Make someone else laugh”
that is PRICELESS.
You are sick! Love it LOL
Understand, when I started reading it, it sounded “just like” something she would do — was actually disappointed when I found it was a joke! LOL
WOOF WOOF WOOF!
You know I lie, right? You know that OK? I lie!
Hey, can I take your grandson to his next appointment???? LOL
BWWHAAAAA!!!!!! It’d be possible, but I’m not sure if the good Doc survived that exam.
This definitely calls for …
‘Wimmin!’ smh
you wimmins are hilarious!!!
HILARIOUS!
Thanks, Alycee, I needed that!
That would surely rival ANY of amk’s jokes! I think you should repost that when he finally wakes his ass up and gets on here:)
Hey Sweetpea I’m glad things worked out for you. You were in my thoughts all day!
I felt all the good thoughts and I think they may have helped. I’ll let you know:) Good luck with your little surgery…MY turn to pay it forward. Thinking of you:)
TOTALLY off topic. Found a great free soundtrack to Les Mis the movie. Wow!

Love the tweet from The People’s View, HF
Daily chuckle:

210K people killed…….I pray we as a people of the world never use these weapons ever again.
I think the START treaty PBO signed, and his nuclear non-proliferation agenda, is one of the most underappreciated aspects of his presidency.
I’m weeping!
Don’t get the keyboard wet.
Picutre of theWhite house press corp question jay carney on Potus diversity. LOL They have a lot of nerve. Check it out. http://twitter.yfrog.com/ke637thj
Looks like the Marines are the tip of the spear in this cause, not sure if I’m suprised. http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/marine-corps-tells-spouses-clubs-to-admit-same-sex-spouses-if-they-want-to-remain-on-base/2013/01/09/b8df37ce-5aaa-11e2-b8b2-0d18a64c8dfa_story.html
NRA accuses White House of ‘attack’ on 2nd Amendment rights
Justin Sink

The lobby group’s statement likely signals it will oppose any legislative attempt to change federal gun laws.…
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/276599-nra-accuses-white-house-of-mounting-attack-on-2nd-amendment-
Looks like that meeting did not go down so well?
And…
http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/276539-biden-gun-violence-proposals-will-hit-obamas-desk-by-tuesday
Most of those gun nuts don’t even know or understand what the 2nd Amendment says. And if they want to defend the homeland so badly, why can’t they join the police force or the military. I, personally, don’t want to be “defended” by any of those gun nuts – I was to be defended FROM them!
Just heard on Rev Al by Ray Nutter, Mayor of Philadelphia: “NRA=Not Really Astute.” Now run and tell that. Pretty soon it’s gonna be safer to live in Syria than the US.
Precisely! And it happens all the time…
Piers asked Ariana what She thought on Guns- Piers the Day after the event, Jay Carney said now is not the time to discuss Hun control.
So, Piers, V are making great progress!
She seems to think she is fighting the WH on gun control! LOL!
jovie141, who gives a dam what Arianna Huff think? Really.
Even if you choose not to be involved, [ in the inauguration] don’t be ungrateful.” that’s the way Rev. Al ended his show tonight, referring to how President Obama is paying his respects to President Lincoln and Dr. King by using their personal bibles during the inauguration.
He was talking about how people of all races and creeds, men and women have sacrificed and died so that we all can be free.
He was calling to all Americans to at least, for once be just a tad decent, please.
A little something different:

OMG!!! You are famous for all eternity, Chips. What does that make us? OMG what shall we say when any one of us goes to Moneygall? that we know the famous lady who made the video an that we were all co-approvers of the famous 7 minute video, and that we bask in the glow of the fame, and …and …and…?
